Hubby had the surf and turf burger and i had the burger special with mushrooms and onions with homemade red wine ketchup! The burgers were huge and very juicy! Best burgers!

A secret place nestled in the Nimitz Design Center, the atmosphere is relaxing and the food is great. The owners and chef do a lot to keep it real by shopping for as much locally grown, organic produce and local meat. The food they make is tasty and they're always spicing it up with new menu items. One of my favorites were the pork tacos. But don't go with my recommendation, chances are you'll get something good no matter what you order.

i loved M.O.T..this place is very similar. My favorite is the paninis and curry carrot soup. the prices are high for the small portions. no side chips or fries here. you are lucky for the pickle sliver. grab your own water and utensils. there are no other eating establishments in the area, so out of desperation we go here for lunch. UPDATE: the owner really does care. He emailed me. I have to give this place another chance. This place was recently reviewed in the Star Bulletin. Read that review too..

I came here with my mom and we split the spinach salad (cranberries, candied walnuts, goat cheese and balsamic vinagrette) and turkey burger (standard sesame bun, mustardy/mayo concoction, lettuce, two tomato slices and a ton of onions). It was pretty tasty and the prices are reasonable. I'd like to come back again to try some more items as a lot of things jumped out at me, but I was on a schedule so didn't want to spend so much time being indecisive.

Wow, their Surf-nTurf burger is the bomb! The soft-shell crab is amazing and the burger...well it actually tastes like burger...or maybe what hamburger use to taste like 20 years ago. Anyway, I can't wait to go back and try everything. SO GOOD!

  • Kelly M.

Believe the pictures - the burger really is 9 inches tall. How am I suppose to fit that in my mouth? Somehow I managed. :-) That said, the burgers were really good, juicy and cooked to the doneness requested. I had the surf and turf, the actual taste of the crab was lost in the burger, but added a nice crunchiness. BF had a bacon cheeseburger. $3 for bacon seems a bit steep. And was a maple bacon, so it was sweet. It kind of detracted from the beefiness of the burger. Location is not visible from the street and no sign. But go ahead and park in what use to be the design center and go into the open air mall area. It's right there.

I LOVE EAT. Had I known this delicious little lunch spot was tucked away inside the Gentry Pacific Design Center earlier... Wow, would I be in trouble. I've been to a couple off-site lunches here, and the food has never disappointed! My co-worker and I always split two dishes so we can try more things -- a practice I highly recommend. We both loved EAT's BLT ($9.25). The special sugar spice bacon really makes it, as it's thick, crunchy, and very flavorful. If you're a grilled cheese fan like me, you'll also love the Say Cheese ($7.25). We added bacon to this too, but it's just as good without it. If burgers are more your thing, try making it a combo -- that way you can get a drink AND try their famous polenta fries, all for $14. I personally get tired of the taste and texture of the polenta fries, but many of my co-workers swear by them. In my opinion, the side you *can't* leave without trying are their handmade mozzarella sticks ($4.99, 3 pcs per order). It's truly heaven on a plate. One thing I wouldn't recommend is their lemonade, which has been on the watery side both times I ordered it. EATnPrivate: You can book this private (AIR CONDITIONED!) dining space and put in your lunch orders ahead of time so all you have to do is show up! The room seats 14 people, so it's a great, intimate place to treat your department to lunch. You'll want to take advantage of some after-lunch coffee after such a filling meal, as you'll definitely need the energy. I recommend the Vietnamese Latte. EAT is probably one of the best kept secrets on Oahu. I'm a returning customer for sure! PARKING: Lots of stalls in the Gentry Pacific Design Center parking lot -- you can't miss it, it's the huge lot right off of Nimitz before City Mill. Parking is free!

I only tried the food. My coworkers went to pick it up after phoning it in. Definitely convenient to phone in orders when you have a short lunch break. I tried the turkey club and it was delicious. I like that the bacon isn't so salty that it feels like your body is instantly dehydrated. It had good flavor to it. I also tried the mozzarella sticks. Again, delicious. So I'm very satisfied with my food. To complete my review, I would have to make a visit sometime in the future to know how the service is. But 4 stars for the food for now!

I wanted to try this place due to yelp reviews.. I was very disappointed. Service: The wait was ridiculous just because a rude lady kept asking dumb questions everyone was getting fed up. The cashier should have said if your not ready please move on the side the line is long its common sense in the food industry.Food: it was not good! I wish I went to zippys down the street. Food just was either extremely bland or the ingredients mix together did not fit well. Never again.

Around valentines day "EAT" was taking pre-orders for chocolate covered bacon bouquets. ME- the person who had never tried there bacon was extremely confused... "what person would prefer a bacon bouquet to lillies and roses"... this one. yup this one right here . Today I tried the Turkey "CLUB" (not sure but its in quotations on the menu) which is turkey, lettuce, tomato, sliced avocado, and there incredible sugar spice bacon on grainy toast. Now that I have had a taste of that bacon it's gonna be hard to walk past and not order several servings of bacon alone. EAT is suppose to be serving pre-made sandwiches soon, i look forward to seeing a wider variety of sandwich options

My lunch pal and I were going somewhere else to dine when the new addition to our group pointed out that the chosen place was closed on Mondays. Quickly, I had to go to Plan B, ...and EAT was it! EAT? My friends texted...they had never heard of the place. I found out about it because I had seen other people checking in. Aha - you think that I'm not paying attention to your check-ins? But I really am! I have so many bookmarks...and the list keeps growing!! Anyway, we had difficulty finding EAT because the location was wrong in Google Maps. I hope I've adjusted the pin correctly by now... I had an idea of where it was since I had taken a real estate class in that building. However, the building had changed its name to Na Lama Kukui. It used to be the Gentry Pacific Design Center. It's located between KMart and City Mill on Nimitz Highway, across from the new Liliha Bakery. There's free parking! There's no air conditioning - but no need because there's good ventilation between the businesses. There are ceiling fans and a nice breeze. Just go up to the counter and order. They'll call your name when the food is ready. Two of my friends got the regular burgers. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty the patty was! I got the Soft Shell Crab sandwich - it was boring in comparison to the Surf & Turf Burger!! This is THE winner! When I bit into that TALL creation, I had a hard time going back to my plain crab sandwich. OOH WEE! Who would have thought that hamburger and soft shell crab tastes so GREAT together? Add the toasted bun and special Chili Aioli sauce and you can't let go! WOW!!! After my friends left to do errands, I had returned to get the Pineapple Li Hing flavor Ono Pop - (don't tell them)! It wasn't too sour and it wasn't too sweet. It's super good! I enjoyed biting into the little bits of pineapple pulp - yum!! So refreshing on a hot, summer day!! Awesome!! I want to go back for the Slow Roast Pork sandwich, the Organic Pasta, the Turkey "Cream Cheese" sandwich, and the Mountain Apple Rose Ono Pop (like a popsicle). Let's support Local!!

Another great place close to my office to pick up breakfast or lunch. Located inside the Gentry Pacific Design Center with lots of free parking, it's a convenient location with good food. There is also a side room that we've used for team lunches and meetings. Food: I normally get the vege burger which is pretty good for those that are meat free. Some folks are big fans of their polenta fries, I usually get them with my burger but to me they don't have a whole lot of flavor on their own. This past visit they were out of the vege burgers so I ordered the sirloin salad. Nice pieces of tender steak cooked medium rare over a bed of greens and sprinkled with a generous portion of bleu cheese crumbles. Other popular items with coworkers have been the Surf and Turf Burger, Turkey Cream Cheese (this sandwich is excellent), and Tacos. Every item I've ordered in the past have always been delish. Service: They tend to take a little longer so some times the line can back up and take awhile. You can call ahead to place an order if you're short on time or ordering it to go. Atmosphere: Order at the counter and find a seat, nothing special but nice enough. They have a fair number of tables and seats so we've never had an issue finding a place to sit. Value: Lunch will normally run about $15 depending on what you order. Not super cheap but in my opinion the ingredients and menu are worth the price. Overall a good choice for breakfast and lunch.

Located in Na Lama Kukui, formerly and better known as Gentry Design Center on Nimitz Highway. Park in one of many customer parking spaces in the front of the center, proceed past the guard and entryway and you'll find EAT on your left. The line to place an order moves at a snail's pace, and everything is made to order so you'll have to wait again for your food, so if you're in a rush or short on time, you're better off dining elsewhere. I had to try the soft shell crab sandwich that a lot of Yelpers have yelped about. It did not disappoint. The crab was crispy, sweet, and fried to perfection. I didn't get it with bacon or avocado, because I thought it automatically came with it. There is an extra charge to add those items, and I wasn't about to fork over more $ for those ad-ons since I already paid $10 for the sandwich. Everything is ala carte so you have to order fries separately. The shoestring fries are a good choice but the portion is a little small for $2.95. While I could have eaten one portion by myself, I shared with my dining mate because I was too cheap to spend $6 alone on simple shoestring fries. Once you're pau with your meal, you must take your dishes and trash to the bins and trashcan to the left of the restaurant. Food was ok, but no "wow" factor to entice me to come back for more.

With all the good reviews here, I was excited to try this place. I got myself a veggie panini and the polenta fries. The veggie panini was very crispy! I loved it. However, it was very oily, the red bell pepper was too soft and the eggplant was too hard. The pesto flavor didn't give me much excitement either. What I did like was the polenta fries. I didn't care too much for the sauce, but the fries were interesting. Perhaps, I'll go back for just for the fries.

I always like going to EAT Honolulu for a good healthy lunch. But I do look forward to their specials the most. My favorite dish is their braised short rib with forbidden rice. I keep forgetting to sign up to their email list every time I go there. The prices are a bit steep but the food quality is good.

Whenever I EAT there, I am reminded of what I think EAT stands for: E = Excellent A = And T = Tasty Yep, EAT has excellent and tasty food. I have frequented EAT as early as 2009 and their food has been typically good and consistent. They place more emphasis on gourmet, healthy food with the use of organic and local ingredients (as much as they can). It is cool they've a nice set up for patrons: an indoor patio with al fresco dining-style tables. It comes in real handy, especially on a rainy day. It is also a useful spot for lunch if you're looking for place with easy parking. Many luncheons I have enjoyed here throughout the years and EAT doesn't disappoints whenever I feel there's a need for me to EAT healthy meals. EAT is one of the few places I like ordering the fish burgers since they're mindful of not overcooking it. The fish filet is also not overdressed but simple and tenderly grilled. Tartar sauce add that nice zing to the tender fish meat. Salads are fresh and delicious here. Couscous and quinoa salads are quite flavorful and I usually order the salads if I end up eating a later lunch at EAT. Their most famous item on the menu has to be the soft shell crab sandwich. At first bite, it is great and I couldn't keep EATing it fast enough and then realized I ate the entire sandwich in less than a few minutes! Let's just say the servings are not too large. After several sandwich episodes later, I'm starting to find the soft shell crab a little too oily so now I reserve this sandwich for when I want to pig out once in a blue moon. The burgers are equally popular here too! They are tasty and juicy but messy to eat. The use of local grass-fed beef makes this a healthier option for those of us who wants to consume fresh meat not laden with antibiotics or hormones. It's cool the burgers are made to order and it costs extra if you want cheese. Kind of weird huh? A good burger has to stand up to the tenderness test, so medium rare is the way I like to order mine. EAT's pickled vegetables come with your burgers but I find them weird since I don't think these sides go well with burgers. However, I do enjoy the traditional pickles with my "free range walking" beef burgers. Or you can have the best of both worlds and order the Surf & Turf combo: soft shell crab on top of the beef patty! Yikes! Life is really good. Since this part of the Nimitz area tends to be more congested, parking can be trying at times but its location in the Pacific Gentry Center (now renamed Na Lama Kukui) offers a reprieve: a big parking lot. Unfortunately, they've a guard making the rounds to check on illegally parked vehicles though. There is a 3-hour time limit for the lot. Another minus: EAT's closes early at 3 PM. This would make a perfect eatery if they would serve dinners. I was fortunate enough to have enjoyed various dinner meals there at different private functions and special events in the past.

As it has now become a new goal to find alternate take-out lunch options, this quickly became one that the workplace was eager to try. After browsing the pictures, it was a unanimous office order of all Surf & Turf Burgers. I called in about 10 Surf & Turf burgers, about 20 minutes before pick-up. Finding this place, from west bound, we were kinda like... um where is it??? We drove past the West Marine (Summer St.) and flipped a turn to go back east bound. Spotted something that looked like a deserted home improvement center - the Gentry Pacific Design center with the green canopy and easily found parking. Walked in to the dark and deserted looking building. EAT, located on the left when you walk in, seems to be the only non vacant unit in the building within eyeshot. Walked up to the counter - there were a few picnic tables around the front counter, with only a couple people at them. Very un-crowded for 11am. Told the cashier the name the order was under and they promptly packed a couple bags with our plastic containers of goodness. Out the door with the order in under 10 minutes. Returning to the work places the ooohs and ahs started. First reaction was how do we eat this??? Its just a very tall burger with all that delicious fried soft-shell crab. One coworker smashed it down. I personally pulled the crab out, stabbed it with a fork, then took a bite of burger then a bite of crab. Easily made two meals for me. one burger. one crab. Soo good the pictures don't do it justice.

Eat Honolulu is a hidden gem in Na Lama Kukui off of Nimitz. The cafe is a relaxed, open air space in the main corridor serving breakfast and lunch, plus they do catering. They've got sugar-spiced bacon, forbidden rice, organic pasta, fish sandwiches, salads and burgers made with grass-fed beef. I tried the Soft-Shell Crab Sandwich with Avocado and Polenta Fries. The sandwich was served on a hearty sweet roll with lettuce and tomato. The crab was hot, lightly crispy and juicy; it was a multiple napkin sandwich in a really good way! The Polenta Fries were thick cut sticks of polenta, fried and served with Aioli. When they were hot they had a nice crispy outside texture and were mild in flavor. Unless you really like polenta, I'd suggest you get a different side to your sandwich. This would be a nice spot for a work meeting or good take out when you're on Nimitz. I'll be back.

Loved their burgers. Receipt says business name is "Matters of taste" but yelp says "EAT" . Enjoyed their burger. Friendly people.

I really enjoy lunches at Eat. The setting is totally casual, nothing fancy but the cooking. It's self service where you order at the counter then pick up your food when it's ready. Sometimes it is busy, the line may be slow, and it may take a while for the food but I've never experienced a big problem. They're a strong proponent of farm to table and get whatever they can locally and fresh and there are daily specials. My regular order is the turkey burger with polenta fries. EAT is one of the few places that has a reliably good turkey burger, which I'm not positive, but I think is house ground. I get blue cheese or gorgonzola on it for a little added zing. The sandwich comes with a couple slices of pickles and not nearly enough pickled onions - I could eat a bowl full of them alone! The polenta fries are definitely unique and worth a try even if you're not fond of polenta, if for nothing else than the dipping sauce, a really delicious, creamy chipotle or other type of chili. My wife usually gets the soft shell crab sandwich which is hard to find especially this good. The crab is extra crunchy and tasty. The salads are good and plenty large. The self serve ice tea and lemonade are always fresh. I struggle to stay away from the fresh cookies but I know they're good because sometimes I loose the battle. The only thing I've been disappointed with is the carrot cake, which was pretty dry. And the fact that they're not open on Saturday! If you don't need your meal super fast or super cheap but want super good food, try EAT!

    1. Free parking. HUGE lot right in front of the mall (where the restaurant is located), but you're supposed to only park for 2 hours. I parked there for 4hrs, and my car wasn't towed. Although.. there is a guard standing outside of the mall monitoring the lot. 2. Soft shell crab sandwich. OMG- SO GOOOOOOOD. Crunchy outer layer, soft inner crab meat, absolutely delicious. 3. Limited seating but the tables recycle fast, so no worries. You'll most likely always find a spot to sit right away. 4. Affordable! My sandwich was about ~$10, but the dang thing is ginormous. Oh, you'll be stuffed for sure. Other food items are about $8 to $10. 5. Vietnamese coffee. 'nuff said. 6. Polenta fries, but you gotta pay separately for them. WAH. T.T Overall, 4 stars! Perfect for lunch!

I've been to this place twice now, and both times disappointed. Originally went bc Yelp highlighted the place. Ordered takeout, peak lunch time, my bad. It was crowded and took approximately an hour to get my burger and polenta fries. Yummy but who has an hour to wait for takeout! Decided to give it a second chance today. Phoned in the order bc learned from last time. Super friendly manager answered and took my order. She repeated the order very slowly twice. When I got there order was ready within 5 minutes so I was happy. Almost left realized they forgot my lemonade (which manager recommended). I went back. The unfriendly cashier was unapologetic and very unfriendly. I drove away and found they forgot the two pieces of bacon that I ordered which was main reason I went (bacon got great reviews). I called to complain and unfriendly cashier informed me "no problem we didn't include bacon in your order". Again, no apology. Very disappointed by manager and service. Not worth a third try....there are much better places to go.

I've been wanting to try their Surf & Turf burger for a while now! Finally made it down there since I was on summer break! They are only open Monday-Friday until 2pm so I needed to go when school wasn't in. My friend and I quickly ordered and found seats. It's open air eating outside so I tried to find a spot near the doorway. My friend ordered the BLT sandwich and her came out fast. I was waiting there for over 10 minutes and finally went up to the counter to ask if my food was coming out anytime soon. The woman behind the counter just said it's coming out shortly and walked away. I waited another 5 minutes and it finally came out. When my friend and I got there, there was only one party in front of us in line. By the time my food came out the place was full of people that came after us and everyone had already gotten there food. There was no sorry or even eye contact when my food finally came out. The same woman I talked to called my name out and when I approached the counter, she quickly walked away. My friend said her sandwich was good but it was cold by the time she ate it 15 minutes later. My burger was good but I never had soft shell crab before. I thought I'd try to just because everyone on Yelp was raving about it. I didn't like the parts of the crab that were hard shell and it was a bit too fishy for me. Warning: it made a HUGE mess from all the juices so I don't recommend eating this with someone you want to impress or someone you don't feel completely comfortable with. Although the burger was good, I don't think I'd return because of the horrible customer service.

Whoever had the idea to top a burger with avocado and a fried (WHOLE!) soft shell crab is a GENIUS. It's like they're soul mates and you should never eat them apart ever again. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but I think you get the picture. EAT is hidden away in the confines of a design center. Driving by, you would never know it existed. Every time I go (which is each time I visit Honolulu), there is plenty of seating. Which brings me to my next point. They are only open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm so I'm guessing the bulk of their clientele are just people who are lucky enough to work in that vicinity. That's fine by me! Keeps the hoards of tourists away (even though I am one myself!) Surprisingly, none of the other diners around me seem to be ordering the Surf & Turf burger. (And yes, I'm nosy and I like to see what other people are eating.) I've tried the polenta fries before and they are a tad too mealy for my taste. I haven't tried any of their other menu items aside from that, but I'm sure they are good. But for me, the Surf & Turf is just too good to pass up. And at $11.99, it's a steal. Or you can head up to the Burger King on the second floor and get yourself a whopper (kidding). When ordering the burger, I would order it one or two steps up from how you actually like it. We asked for a medium but it tasted well done. I normally loathe well done beef but the crab made the burger passable this time. The great thing about this burger is that it's big enough to share, but small enough to finish on your own. (does that even make sense?) I usually get my own since I'm a fatass. Next time, I'm going for the gold - going to add an egg to it! The Turf's Up burger sounds pretty awesome too - beef patty with Portuguese sausage patty, topped with an egg. Deffo will try that one too one of these days!

For a company lunch, we had take out from EAT. I ordered the Paniolo Cattle Co. Beef Burger Steak and the Handmade Mozzarella Sticks, which DID NOT include the Oahu Tomato Marinara. My main entrée's beef burger patty was tasty, but it was also microscopic (maybe 3-1/2 inches diameter). The forbidden rice (half a scoop of rice) and the salad were also sparse and not to mention, the dressing came in a sauce container that was also meagerly filled. I paid nearly $20 for slightly more than a snack. You could get almost a full priced meal at a decent restaurant for that price mind you. Generally speaking, I think a lot of people in the office was left unimpressed and a bit hungry, especially those who got the lunch plates. One co-worker ordered the polenta fries, which was also underwhelming, and seriously the chili aioli was a smudge between two sauce container tops. For the money and the size of the Beef plate, I feel like there are comparable or better quality places for less that give a whole lot more. Alas, maybe next time, I'll try a burger...as people who got burgers seemed to be happier.

This visit was my first eating here and my husbands second visit, previously, I had tried their coffee months ago and thought it was excellent, my husband had their cheeseburger 2 weeks ago and had to come back for more. So on this visit I tried the 1/2 Just say cheese and my husband had a cheeseburger meal. The Grilled Cheese; Thank GOD, I ordered only half! It is HUGE, but This is one of the best grilled cheese you will get on Island! They cook it panini style w/a ton of cheese; cheese galore. I was only able to eat about a quarter of it and my 12 year old son was able to eat the rest. It had a nice crunch when you bit down with ooey gooey cheese with every bite. The Cheeseburger - My husband swears by this place -- They make everything with fresh quality meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and pickled onions - YUM - Their burgers are made to order, so you get the choice of Rare,Medium Rare or well Done. My husband always gets Medium rare done to perfection, juicy and moist. He said the burger is the best he has had anywhere on Island, although they're a little pricey well worth it! Polenta Fries -- these come with the meal -- First time ever for any of us to have polenta fries, I thought they were good, my husband didn't care for them nor my son, but none of us have ever had polenta to begin with. However, they were crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. PS. We had tried another establishment this last weekend looking for a good cheeseburger and it didn't even compare so, if you're in the neighborhood or just on a venture to find good food, stop on in and give them a try. I promise you will not be disappointed. (They do have odd hours, so make sure to check operation hours before going).

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. I was at this industrial looking design center to look for some area rugs. I needed something to eat so tried the only lunch spot at this center, which indeed looked very unassuming. I asked the cashier what she recommended, and I was most satisfied with her recommendation of the soft shell crab sandwich with bacon and avocado. It came with fresh lettuce and tomato as well as picked red onion on the side. You'd be hard pressed to find a better sandwich at any five star restaurant or hotel. Ample parking as well.

Saw this place on a recent Yelp email featuring BURGERS. It was the only one that I had not tried and boy do I like BURGERS. Tucked away in what I remember as being a Gentry home improvement center. The center is now called "Na Lama Kukui" just off of Nimitz Hwy between Kmart and City Mill with lots of free parking in front. I ordered the Classic Burger combo (comes with drink, Polenta Fries and Pickled Vegetables) I added avocado (because I always do) and Provolone Cheese. It also comes with homemade sesame seed bun and homemade ketchup. Grass fed local beef is always good too. The order took a while (10mins) but, I don't mind waiting because I know its being made to order. The burger was delicious. Id go back and order it again but, next time with a side order of Potato Salad (because I usually do). I do wish the burger was a little bigger but all in all it was a great EATing experience. Next time tho I'm gonna do a plate. Hamburger Steak or Chicken Cutlet. With, of course, a side order of Potato Salad.

I convinced my co-workers to go here based on the rave reviews. Hmmmm now where to start. First off, I don't like the nickel-and-diming on the menu. Practically everything is extra. American Cheeese? $1.2x. Different Sauce - that's extra. Anyway, we went for 2 burgers with american cheese and a loco moco. So the person that had the loco moco said it was the worst he has ever eaten! Egg yolk was broken and cooked. Burger was not seasoned. There was little to no gravy. Forbidden purple rice was ok. He was very disappointed. The burgers were ok, but again under-seasoned. The pickle tasted like Japanese Namasu pickles. My other co-worker said he didn't like the texture of the burger - too crumbly and that there was too much ketchup. Another thing I noticed was that his tomato was still unripe. I thought my burger was ok. It needed more seasoning, but I liked the ketchup. I thought the bun was good too. I liked the fact that they melted the cheese in a broiler. The wait was too long. There was hardly anyone there at 2pm. Yet we still waited about a half hour. The cashier was very nice though. Overall, not as good as the hype.

I have been here quite a few times now but this was the best day by far. Definitely try the soft shell crab sandwich and add avocado and bacon. Jesus. That was amazing. The candied bacon really tops it off.

I absolutely love this place. Every time I'm in the area this is the only place I want to eat. The soft shell crab sandwich is my favorite. It's not a fishy sandwich and if you've never tried it, you should! Jocelyn , and the staff are very friendly and today they went out of their way to make sure lunch with my wife was perfect. I can't say enough about this hidden treasure. If you're traveling on Nimitz and you're hungry stop by and order the soft shell crab sandwich. Other items on the menu that are Ono are the surf and turf, slow roast pork and the carrot cake. I can't wait until the next time!!.

Cute place. Slow service. Portions are small for the price though. I got the BLT with avocado and polenta fries. There were FOUR "fries." The aioli for the fries was not that flavorful and was pretty salty. The BLT was good. There was enough of everything and I was glad I got the avocado.

On the most recent visit to EAT HONOLULU, I tried the fish special of the day, which was Elepe (swordfish) on a bed of Gemelli pasta with a "Red" Sauce. That sauce actually being a combination of a ragu and pesto. The pasta was also tossed with brocolli and topped with melted fresh grated parmesan. And? EXCELLENT! The swordfish was seasoned and grilled to perfection, retaining as much moisture as a lean cut of fish such as that could pull off. While the seared grill markings gave it that desirable charred and smokey flavor accent. They also put the perfect amount of kosher salt and fresh cracked black on it and that's it, letting the flavor of the Elepe shine through most. Just simply, a perfectly executed cut of grilled fish. The sauce was also STELLAR. Not too complex, yet retaining enough depth to know lots of heart went into it. The broccoli was a little undercooked, yet still, it was a welcome earthy contrast to the starchiness of the pasta; the latter of which was cooked to al dente perfection. This grilled fish 'n pasta dish ran $15, and was worth every penny! I'd order it again and again! I also got to try a bite of my table mate's "Surf 'n Turf", which is their Kulana Farms (Big Island) all-beef burger combined with a WHOLE crispy battered soft shell crab, and WOW, man is that Kulana Farms beef AWESOME! You can really taste the freshness, along with the juiciness and BEEFINESS! That burger just screams, "I'm the best dang burger you will ever wrap your lips and tongue around!". While I thought the Soft Shell Crab was a bit overkill, with too much going on, still, the combination of the unmistakable crab flavor along the beefy-beefy beef patty worked very nicely together. It was certainly as "Surf 'n Turf" as the proverbial name gets. I think what really glued this one together was teh Avocado. "Money" right there! When I can "afford it" (health-wise), I'll certainly return to EAT HONOLULU just for a burger, opting to top it with my favorite swiss 'n 'shrooms (the king of all burger toppings, IMO). My other table mate ordered the 808 Reuben, another special of the month, and really enjoyed it, only complaining there wasn't enough pastrami in it. I mean, he was expecting it stacked like a New York Deli, however it turned out looking like a plain 'ole roast beef sandwich. Still, with what it was, it rocked his world. Also rocking his world was Eat's Chicken Mushroom Paella Soup to accompany the sandwich, which he described as tasting like a "Haole Jook". Hey, that works! Not from this visit, but from a previous one, and related to the Reuben, the Polenta Fries are certainly "interesting", texturally speaking, as expected. Think steak-cut fries, albeit with a more mealy, corn-like or rice-like flavor and texture profile, vs. potato, is the best way to describe it. Never-the-less, really ono! Eat's Polenta Fries for the win! Definitely order that with whatever sandwich or burger you choose, at least to try it. Good stuff! Finally, another one of my table mates tried the Kulana Farms Beef "Steak" plate, which is essentially a gourmet twist on the classic hamburger steak plate. It's described as being in a "Soy & Ginger Glaze", which he described as being "light", yet totally working as substitute for the traditional, much richer brown gravy. He also raved about the accompanying purple-colored "Forbidden Rice", likening it as the haole version of his favorite Sekihan rice. And of course, that Kulana Farms all-beef patty, grilled to juicy perfection. Huge thumbs-up for this dish! Owner and chef Dave Passanisi told me he plans on changing the menu for winter, so expect some exciting new dishes soon. Looking forward to it!

Best Catering Experience. This year, I had to plan my company's 21st anniversary party. I literally looked up and found and communicated with EVERY caterer on this island. I am so happy I chose EAT HONOLULU The Good * Jocelyn was so EASY and FUN to work with, she was cooperative and creative with what I wanted for the party and even helped me out according to my tight budget * Not to forget to mention she's a certified wine sommelier - so she helped me alot with selecting the wines for the party * Both Jocelyn and Chef David were very knowledgable about their tastes and foods that when they'd tell me about the great options I couldn't help but get excited and pee a little in my pants because I LOVE FOOD! * On the night of the party, they showed up and prepared everything on time. I really didn't have to do anything that night which was surprising because I was expecting to actually WORK instead of enjoying the party. I GOT TO ENJOY THE PARTY! *Their whole staff was attentive, friendly, professional, and enjoyable. * This was an all-pupu party. *Beef tataki was hands-down my favorite *Caprese Crostini was so good too! The Bad * The size of my stomach because I WANTED TO EAT MORE! The Weird * Literally everything I set into my mouth at the party was so delicious (as dirty as that sounds.. but it's true!!) I received countless compliments on how good the catering was for this party, and it just reassures me that I went with the right caterer :)!

Overall fair burger. Tried the surf and turf with burger patty and fried soft shell crab which comes with lettuce tomato avocado and chili aioli. However the burger was a bit bland from the patty to the crab and it ends up being a tall stack which is difficult to eat. Also the place is a bit pricey for value.

Food is okay here. The staff is pretty nice. I ordered the fish sandwich yesterday. Mahi mahi was a little overcooked. There wasn't enough sauce on the buns. The lettuce looked old and I got only 2 pieces of pickles... Definitely not worth 10$.

It was humongous! It was gigantic! LOL that's what she said. The surf and turf specialty burger; that is reason enough to get your butt here. This place is located in the Gentry Design Center. There' s a ton of parking (Limited or looking for parking is a pet peeve of mine). They are only open during the weekdays Monday-Friday 9:30am-3pm which is why I never got here yet, it's a bit far from my work and I only have an hour lunch break. Plus Nimitz is always congested and I heard the food takes awhile, there's always a line and tables are always full. All negatives. But I wanted to try that burger so bad... Good thing my coworkers are brave. I decided to take an extended lunch and make up my time so I could go here. Much to my pleasant surprise, Nimitz wasn't too bad and there was a ton of parking and no line and plenty of tables open. Lucky day, lucky day. The place is small and has less than 10 tables but its cute. yelp.com/writeareview/bi… They have a pretty diverse menu with sandwiches, classic burgers, plates, soups, salads and awesome sides. They have classic burgers like beef, veggie and turkey which is what my friend got. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… All the burgers come with EATpickles. OMG, love it. Pickles with an Asian twist. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… Forget that classic burger, I went straight for the surf and turf. It's ala carte so I got a side of polenta fries with it. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… Surf & turf specialty burger $11.99 -Kauai beef patty whopped with a whole crispy soft shell crab, fresh avocado and specialty sauce. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… I don't know how I managed to cram it in my mouth but I did and I enjoyed every minute of it. The crab was fried but not greasy and perfectly crispy. I'm not an avocado fan but it went so well in the burger. The sauce was ok, I could do without it. It was a bit messy, good thing I wasn't on a date! Polenta fries with seasonal dipping sauce $3.75 yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… This was interesting. I've never had polenta before so I had to google it. It had a nice crisp outside and it was creamy and moist inside. It was good but I'm a bit biased since I'm a potato French fries kind of gal. But definitely it's a must try. My eating partner got us a couple of sides as well. Sautéed mushrooms $3.75 yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… Yum! These mushrooms had some kind of magic on them. They were delicious and seasoned well. I want to say I think they were cooked in butter, cheese, rosemary and other seasonings. Handmade mozzarella sticks $4.99 yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… These were ok. The sauce was good but the mozzarella sticks weren't anything special. The food didn't take that long to prepare, maybe 10 minutes. The cashier was very friendly and helpful. I didn't get to try the chocolate covered bacon (need to order in advance) or the sugar spice bacon which are signature dishes as well. I will be back and I want to go to EAT again. ^^*

The people and food at EAT are awesome. Ordered the steak burger and Hawaiian fish platter. They allowed for med-rare cook temp on the burger which was sooo good! The platter had lots of great flavors, but I ended up adding siracha to the bland-ish rice :-/ Overall, great lunch. I'm thinking about riding down for breakfast one day too!

SURF & TURF BURGER ($11.99): Kulana Farm beef patty topped off with a whole soft shell crab and chili aioli on a sesame bun. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… - The beef was lightly seasoned w/salt and pepper and cooked to a perfect medium rare. Each bite was super moist and tender, so much that the juices literally ran down my wrists as I was eating it (sadly, it also dripped right down into my purse, I had it sitting on my lap. Shiet....). - The fried soft shell crab was the BEST fried soft shell I've had yet! The batter was light, yet enough coverage to retain its crunch right down to the last bite. Perfectly fried, there was nothing greasy about this little delectable fried crab. I would come back for just this alone! ***$11.99 for their burger combo. Comes w/burger, 20oz drink and polenta fries*** ***Ladies: This ain't pretty, so check your daintiness at the door and be ready to get messy. Luckily, my guy friend didn't care how much of a mess I made. I just smooshed this monstrous burger down and chomped on it like a wild dog. Yeah, don't bring your first dates here, lol! SOFT SHELL CRAB SANDWICH ($8.79): Whole soft shell crab fried, served on sesame buns and topped with their house chili aioli. It's exactly the same as the Surf & Turf burger, sans the beef. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… - Even without the burger, this sandwich was quite filling with the whole fried crab. This was my favorite out of the two burgers. I could savor and enjoy the sweet crab meat a lot more without the distraction of the bulky beef patty. SUGAR-SPICED BACON ($2.99 for 4 pieces): On another visit, we ordered a side of these to throw into the Surf & Turf burger. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… - I was hesitant upon hearing that it was cooked in sugar, but it's delicious! These thick crispy pieces were still smokey and salty and not overly sweet. ***For $5.99, you can choose 2 sides with your entree*** POLENTA "FRIES" ($3.75): yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… - Piping hot and freakin' delicious! Creamy grits shaped and fried to a fantastic crunchy golden treat. After finishing these off, I didn't want to go back to eating regular potato fries ever again. Yes, it's that good. ***For $5.99, you can choose 2 sides with your entree*** 808 REUBEN ($9.75): Homemade Kulana Farms Pastrami, pickled golden beets and the same chili aioli that was used for the burgers and polenta fries. yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… ***No longer on the menu. It was the only item I didn't like.*** I was expecting something similar to a pastrami reuben but what I got was a flavorless sandwich that I ended up tossing after a few bites. 1) The "pastrami" was thin, flavorless pieces of roast beef. Subways has better roast beef. 2) Instead of rye bread, they gave me dry sourdough bread. 3) The sour pickled yellow beet slices didn't go well with this sammie at all. Aside from giving it some sort of kick or flavor........ok, I'm lying, it actually it gave me goosebumps. It was way too funky and tart. EAT still gets 4.5 stars for the soft shell crab sandwich. Fresh-tasting & perfectly-fried, it's the best I've had yet.

The first time I visited EAT I ordered the vege burger with added avocado and a side of polenta fries. I've never had polenta fries before and they were amazing! You've definitely got to try them. The vege burger patty was delicious. It's not the typical processed, preservative-packed veggie patty that other restaurants serve; this one is made of quinoa, black beans, and Okinawa sweet potatoes I believe. To die for! So Ono! My second time dining in at EAT was just as wonderful. the nice women working the register were able to accommodate my request for an animal product-free meal. I ordered the vege burger (patty only) on a bed of seasonal greens with a side of oil & vinegar (since their seasonal salad dressing has honey in it, I left that out). The salad was crispy, fresh and very fulfilling. Overall if you're looking for a healthy lunch and a quaint atmosphere, I suggest giving EAT Honolulu a try. I'll definitely be coming back!

CHOCOLATE COVERED BACON, say what?!?! yelp.com/biz_photos/eat-… I think their menu somewhat changes seasonally because I had this amazing turkey/apple/bacon panini from here one day and came back a few months later and it disappeared from the menu!!! *pouty face* Cute cafe-style eatery located in the Gentry Pacific Design Center. I'm not sure where to park because I usually just walk from work, but if anything the Dole Cannery parking lot is right next door. The restaurant itself is very charming. It's set up like it would be at one of those outside seating cafes (minus the umbrellas since it's indoors). All the food seems very quality with unique ingredients and taste. My only disappointment is the selection of dishes. I'm (sometimes) a picky eater so there's not many options I think I would enjoy. And on to the chocolate bacon.... In all honesty, I think this is overrated. I think it's $2-3 per piece of bacon and must be preordered 48 hours in advance. A little inconvenient for my lifestyle, but my coworkers love these! Haha I guess I'm just not much of a bacon fan? Novel idea for bacon-lovers though!

Deliciousness perfected. They have gourmet everything and all at the right size and portion for great lunch sessions with the wife. Centrally located right in Kalihi across from Hilo Hatties, this spot boasts the amazing Turkey Sandwich and a Surf and Turf Burger to boot! Outstanding. Quaint indoor patio setting and BYOB for your business expenses. Likely would come here every weekend and my wife swears by it. They know her by order.

I came here with my friends as we took a break from the office. Though we could walk it from the building we were in, one of my friends insisted that we take his car over. Lol, well then again he had to go elsewhere after he dropped us back off. So it worked out okay. It's always puts pressure on me when I'm trying out a new place for the first time. I'm trying to see what's appealing on the menu! More pressure as you're in line at the same time because you don't want the line to be too long when you finally made up your mind and when you do figure it out *May I take your order?* you forget when it's your turn. Oh it's happened quite frequently. Luckily I just had to sit at a table while they ordered. Oh yes, compare the tables then sit at the one that looks the cleanest and has enough chairs for the entire party. I tired their BLT. Every time I have one, I for some reason wonder, where's the cheese? I still enjoy it. Also not a fan of avocado *what's wrong with me?* nothing, I simply just don't like it. It also was cut in half. Better to eat. They also have water with lemons near the ordering line... Yes let me squeeze through, no I'm not trying to cut I'm just getting some water. And if you can't finish they have take out boxes and an area to put away the plates that you've used during the meal near the trash can (if you're dining in that is).

EAT wasn't what I was expecting, but it was a delicious easy lunch. My husband ordered the soft crab sandwich- really great. I was a little boring and went for the club- it was a club. Their pickles were really fantastic. Great place for a quick lunch.

It was really good! We went on a Tuesday around 2pm. There wasn't a crowd, because it was later in the day and they close at 3. The food took about 15 min to cook, but worth the wait. We both ordered classic burgers and my hubby added egg, bacon, and avocado to his. Both meals cost $32, which is a bit much, but they were tasty. The polenta fries were different, I liked them with the sauce they have but hubby wasn't a big fan, they tasted like batter to him. So I looked up what polenta was and it's cornmeal, so it makes sense. Would probably go back:)

I heart meat bulge. That sounds wrong, but lemme 'splain. You know that perfect burger, juicy and medium rare and all kinds of "I can stretch my mouth thiiiiiis big, how about you" goodness? And then as you're eating it, sometimes that soft, juicy bulge of meat and maybe filling slowly makes its way just outside the sandwich...and you get to nibble on a singular, glorious, super sexy bite of spectacular, naked, meaty lusciousness without the bun, right before going back to the proper sandwich? Yeaaaah, that's meat bulge. EAT just changed its seasonal menu a little while ago, but the most popular items are still there. Favorites: $10.25 Turf's Up burger with $1.25 provolone (already comes with a huge, patty-covering slice of Portuguese sausage and a lovely fried egg on the patty, along with butter lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, homemade red wine ketchup, and a side of pickled onions). $7.99 Original Burger with $2.99 spiced bacon (yes, it's worth it) and $1.99 homemade mozzarella (huge, thick, perfectly gooey and covering the whole patty). The burgers are consistently well seasoned and sized exactly right for the black sesame seed bun. Patty itself was at least half a pound, lunch partner swore it was at least 3/4 pound. I ordered it medium rare, and it was EXACTLY medium rare. Beautiful. This place probably makes the best burgers on the island. Been to the gourmet restaurants hunting good burger, and those $30+ burgers don't compare, I'm sorry. We hunt at the midrange and the dives too, and for the money, this hits the spot every time. Eat here, and it's clear that other place in the same price point which gets raves (it rhymes with Freddy's, hint hint) doesn't even come close. You can call ahead with your name and phone number, and they'll have it ready for you, too. I like takeaway because it gets real sometimes, with soft, gaspy noises I'd rather not have strangers hear. Customer service has been consistently good here, too. Check out the website for current menu. Burgers at 10am? Why, YES! Mmm...meat bulge...

Odd location for a restaurant but I'm guessing majority of their customers either work in the building or close by. Casual and comfortable eatery with good food at reasonable prices. Cuban grilled cheese - delicious! The bread was pressed enough to give it a crunchy texture. Good ratio of meat and cheese. Surf n turf burger (kulana beef and soft shell crab) - I've come to the conclusion that I'm not a big fan of grass fed beef. Just my preference though. Otherwise, the rest of the burger was good. Roasted cauliflower w/some kind if vinaigrette and parm - 'twas shmedium. I think it would've been better if it was served warm and not cold. Overall, enjoyable dining experience and will return.

Been on a burger hunt lately. Eat is unique in that it's not in a very conspicuous place located in the gentry pacific design center. Had a plain cheeseburger with the polenta fries. Ordered it medium it came medium was not as drippy juicy as I tend to like it more lean but highly flavorful beef. I think the polenta fries could have been off the charts if but it tasted like it was fried in the same oil as their soft shell crab so it was kind of crabby. Not a bad thing so much but it was unexpected and probably not what they intended. Both needed more salt but that's an easy fix and a personal preference. Service was friendly, food was good, ambience is casual seat yourself prices a bit on the higher side of moderate but all at a good value.

Eat is the restaurant right below my office (lucky me!!) and I'm tempted every day to purchase something from here. My favorite meal is hands down the surf and turf burger. It has a big ole patty and a fried soft shell crab inside. It's a ginormous burger and had no idea how I'd eat it when I first ordered it, but after one bite, I couldn't resist eating it ALL. My other favorite dish to order is their breakfast burger. You can pick the type of bread, cheese and meat. I always get it with bacon because they're bacon is SUPER delicious! Every soup and pasta I've ordered here has been fantastic and fresh. It's always pretty busy during lunch time so the wait can be a bit long and some of the stuff is pretty pricey. But it is high quality food definitely worth trying!

Had lunch with a friend here. Opted for this spot based on yelp reviews- we were planning for la tour cafe- but the parking is so bad and it's always packed and not enough space or seats during the lunch hour. So...we hit EAT, and I'm glad I tried it! The parking was easily accessible and there was ample parking right in front. The restaurant itself was busy, but we were helped quickly and the service was friendly and helpful. There was a good amount of seats available as well, it wasn't too cramped, there was enough space between our seats and the next party. Our food arrived within a reasonable amount of time. I enjoyed the polenta fries and turkey cranberry cream cheese sandwich. Food tasted fresh and looked appealing. There were lots of other mommies there with their babies in strollers. It's an open seating area that extends into the halls of the building center, so kids can run around while you wait or eat. I would recommend others try it!

This is located in the center right before City Mill on Nimitz Hwy. I went on Tuesday and there were lots of parking. BYOB unsure if there's a fee because the word 'no' before corkage was smudged off but still visible. Unfortunately, they are only open till 3p.m. You order at the counter. No waitstaff. The reason I gave this a 3... I had the Surf and Turf. Tower of food that is visually appealing, but the attempt to take one bite that includes all ingredients was a bit difficult. I had to use a fork and knife, which I think is wrong for any burger. My issue is that my patty wasn't seasoned, and it just tasted like meat. I don't know if it was meant that way or they forgot, but it just tasted like meat. Even with the combination of flavors from the soft shell crab (which was yumm), veggies, and sauce... couldn't get passed the 'meat' taste. I still ate it after i put salt and pepper on that patty and sauce just to mask it. Polenta fries were good. Not memorable, but good. I didn't get to try my mom's fish sandwich, and I had a piece of my brother's fish plate. I had my own burger to conquer. They both liked it ok. I will go back and try their other stuff.

Panna cotta is too sweet, even though I have asked the chef beforehand if it is too sweet. He said they dont put so much sugar but i felt over dosed by sugar esp the sauce on top was even sweeter. How can a panna cotta go wrong. I never through food away but this one i had to after one bite. JJ much better

I'd let you know how it was of we'd ever been helped. They had three staff people working. There was a couple sitting at tables. Two other people at the counter waiting for service. The two guys working were sort of meandering around the kitchen. I really couldn't tell you what they were doing - I could tell you what they WEREN'T doing... Helping customers. The one girl who seemed to be directly tasked with helping customers was making coffee... I think. I'm pretty sure I've seen YouTube videos of double amputees that could have made coffee faster than this girl, who even had the benefit of having all her limbs functional and in tact. Regardless, about 15 minutes of standing there, I gave up and left. All I wanted was a bagel. I could have gone home and baked one in the amount of time I stood there waiting for service.

~April 25,2014~ I came here with a friend for lunch since it's really close to my office. Looking at their Yelp page, the place seems like one of those cute cafes you'd find around LA. We go there around noon on a Friday. It was crowded but not so busy we couldn't find a seat -- everyone seemed to be ordering take-out. I ordered the Classic Burger combo, which came with their Classic Burger, a drink, and polenta fries. I had never had polenta fries, so I was excited to try them. For my drink, I made myself an Arnold Palmer using their iced tea and lemonade (free refills), which was pretty good. The iced tea had a light floral flavor and the lemonade was not too sweet. However, the wait for my food was too long. For someplace that serves takeout, they sure took a while to make a burger. I think I waited about 40 minutes before they called my name to pick up my food. My friend ordered the Surf and Turf burger, and they lost or forgot about his order! His food took even longer than mine. I was probably 2/3 of the way through my burger before he even got his (I was starving so I started eating haha). The burger was good, but pretty messy. I don't know if it was really worth the 40 minute wait considering how hungry I was by the time I got my food. The polenta fries were interesting. They were crunchy on the outside, but mushy on the inside with very little seasoning. You really needed to use the aioli they gave you with the fries to flavor them. ~June 4, 2014~ Came here again with coworkers. I had already eaten lunch, so I thought I'd get something small or something I could take home. I decided upon the Flatbread "Pizza" thinking I could eat a slice and then take the rest home. I should have taken those quotations seriously, because it's not really a pizza. It's just one piece of flatbread with a few slices of salami, red onion, tomato, mozzarella and like a leaf of lettuce with some sauce sprinkled over. NOT WORTH $4.99! I was so disappointed. It was more like a snack than a meal. The description was so misleading. And again, it took forever to make our food and someone's order was forgotten and was even missing ingredients... ~OVERALL~ Overall, they get 2 stars. One star taken for the wait, another for the okay food, and another for forgetting orders not once, but twice. They really need to work on their kitchen efficiency and organization. If you plan to eat here, I'd suggest calling ahead of time so you don't have to wait so long, and make sure to check up on your order so they don't forget.

Yelp buddy Val Y and I decided to have lunch again. This time it was time to EAT. The deal is this, EAT is a front for a catering company. Since they have to have a kitchen anyway they use their facilities to sell to the public also. Located in the Honolulu Design Center on Nimitz between K-Mart and City Mill. I had been in there before to Piano Planet and the Indich Carpet store. It is pretty dead in this design center area otherwise. I was looking around at the few shops and spotted an artistic light fixture that I think was made by a friend of mine. I didn't want get too close to the Piano store because I was afraid the guy might spot me. I know he has no one to talk to. But, a lot of people are coming in for lunch at EAT. EAT may be the best thing that has happened to this building. They have burgers, panini's, sandwiches and a few specials, plate lunches and pasta. yelp.com/biz_photos/FsPU… Me: Grilled veggie panini. yelp.com/biz_photos/FsPU… Warm and lots of flavors. Very nice sandwich. I will happily eat here again. Take out for daughter: Cheese panini with bacon added please. " Yes, sir, cheese with tomato" "Oh, that's with bacon please"..."OK then cheese with tomato"..."uh, Cheese with bacon?"..."Yes that 's right sir cheese with tomato" The lady was nice and smiling at me. Sometimes people just don't click. I Love it! I gave up. Daughter liked it anyway. I told her I tried to get it with bacon. As Val and I were sitting there talking people just kept coming in for lunch. There really were quite a few customers. You sit "outside" inside their mall like covered enclosed area. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/FsPU… ) Better than sitting indoors. I liked it. They have a private room that seats up to 14. ( yelp.com/biz_photos/FsPU… ) Looks like they have private chef services plus sort of "Pop-Up" events for a prix fix price. Easy parking in the large lot out front. Great alternative for lunch with a client. Casual and private enough to be relaxed and get business done.

Great lunch spot that will make you feel healthy and a tree hugger all at once. Not the traditional restaurant rather an extension of a very good catering company. It features an intelligent menu using limited but locally sourced, ingredients to create a variety of very flavorful dishes. Order at the counter. Take a seat & wait (dishes are prepared ala minute so 15-20 minutes is typical). Pick up your food (no servers), grab your utensils and enjoy. Bus your table when done. The Kauai grass fed burger is excellent. Lean with a good beef flavor heightened by a house made red wine ketchup sandwiched in a fresh sweet bun. Perfect as a combo with delicious polenta fries served with a siracha dip. The island fresh fish sandwich is exceptional. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. Moist and flavorful. Sandwiches are served with an outstanding sweet / acidic root veg pickle that brightens the pallet between each bite. I can't believe I'm raving about a pickle. Stick to the burgers, paninis, and sandwiched for the best flavor punch and value Portions are sensibly healthy (translated, if you can polish off a plate lunch, you will leave hungry). Expect to pay $10-$15 for lunch. BYOB with no corkage & excellent stemware. Look for their special dinners and wine pairings to really experience the creativity of the chef.

Freshness. Seasonality. Local, sustainable organic sourcing. Unique. Food Love. EAT is a true hidden gem. When I first found EAT, I immediately thought it reminded me of many of the small cafe eateries I used to visit in Napa Valley when I used to live there. The owners started out as one private chef to a Hawaii Loa Ridge household and one Sommelier from Boston. Together, they opened up EAT as a unique restaurant with a focus on Fresh, Seasonal Ingredients with Local, Sustainable Sourcing. As such, their menu changes every season. They're constantly on the lookout for the best local farms and producers to source from, so they have the best of the season to serve, and it shows. Not only in the quality of the food, but in the quality of the whole operation -- when you have a philosophy of not just being "good enough", but doing it RIGHT, every time, it shows. EAT's operation is only partially the cafe you see when you visit and eat there. A lot of their business is in private events, catering and special dinners. This is one of the things I love the most about EAT -- they have a small, private dining room that seats 14, and they will hold dinners that you can RSVP for prix fixe, Omakase style. Coming soon (as of this review on 3 April 2012) are a dinner based on Snout-to-Tail cooking, as they bring in an $1800 top-quality local hog to prepare for their dinner guests, another based around garlic, and seasonal deconstrucitons with 24 courses to taste. You can also make reservations to have private dinners there, with a minimum of $500+ food; and you can work with the chef and sommelier directly to come up with a perfect menu. Best yet, Jocelyn, who is one of the owners and the Sommelier, can help you pair and select wines for your meal, which you can buy yourself outside to save money and bring BYOB to EAT to drink with no corkage fee. These guys love food, love to share the love for it, and it shows. Now, here's what you need to know about EAT: Parking: Lots of it and free. EAT is located in the Gentry Pacific Design Center near/ across the street from Sam Choy's BLC. Bottom floor, you'll see it. Food: EAT's food is light, healthy, delicious, full of flavor and fresh -- just like cafes in Napa Valley who source their ingredients from farms and producers just down the street who share the same attention to quality. Even more interesting, EAT does vegetarian versions of every dish on the menu. This visit, I had the Surf & Turf Burger. To start, the bun is made in-house. It's buttered and grilled then topped with a housemade chili aioli or red wine ketchup. The beef is sourced from a farm on Kauai, ground fresh in-house, cooked medium. This is topped with avocado, red onion, tomato, and then finally with a perfectly crisp and juicy deep-fried soft-shell crab. I had the "make it a plate" option with the Polenta Fries (polenta cakes cut into fries and then fried) and Couscous Salad, both of which are delicious and among my regular favorites. The burger also comes with some of the highest-quality housemade pickles, pickled daikon and pickled onion I've had in my life. (see attached photos) EAT has the cooking philosophy of slow-cooking and doing it right. You can tell when you get your food. Instead of getting something that looks nothing like what you see in magazine photos, you get exactly what you saw for the magazine photo shoot, every time. Great care is put into preparing everything that is served to you. As such, they are not fast. But that's a good thing sometimes. And this is one of those times. Also, they serve Otto Cheesecake. And are BYOB. Win. Ordering: To keep their prices down for the quality of food they serve, EAT is counter service. Look at the menu online at eathonolulu.com in advance, or look at it on the board as you arrive. Order from the counter. They'll call your number, pick up from the counter. It takes a while (see above), around 20 mins or so. Seating: Seating space for about 50, including tables of 2, 4, 6, and a bar. Free Wi-Fi. Service: There really isn't service beyond ordering and talking to the staff. They are friendly and knowledgeable. Decor: Like a cafe in Napa Valley. Cost: Starts at about $7 for a burger or sandwich, with other toppings additional, entrees at about $10. Sometimes when you eat somewhere, you just know they understand what Food Love is. Its similar to when you've been truly, deeply and intimately in love with a woman for years and when you talk about her, you just can't keep your enthusiasm from bubbling over, as if your love is renewed fresh and sustained every season. This is what it's like when talking to the owners and chefs here. They know and understand love -- their kind of love, and they want to share it with you so you too know may know love. I appreciate restaurants that make it a point to do it right, every time; fresh, seasonal, unique, sustainable, and local. 5/5

Best Bacon Ever! Came here yesterday for a breakfast meeting, and really had no idea I was walking in to find what could end up being a new FAVORITE PLACE. This is like a gourmet cafe. Everything they serve seemed to be of very high quality. Only reason the for the 4 stars is that I really didn't try enough from the menu to go to 5... but after a second visit, which will hopefully happen soon, I won't be surprised if I go all the way there! ***** I had a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and a side order of the BACON Bagel was yummy, generously-sized and toasted well - so many places don't understand the importance of a good toast... and give you food barely toasted. In addition, the serving of cream cheese was more than sufficient. Again, so many places skimp on things like butter or cream cheese, which seriously hampers the overall experience / enjoyment for those of us who love food. ;) But it was the bacon that has me writing this review. If you visit Eat, you just have to try this stuff. This bacon, called "sugar spice bacon" is amazing! So delicious that I insisted my co-meeters try some. Everyone was equally impressed. I talked to the chef before leaving - and he told me it is their (his) creation. This stuff is seriously terrific. And the serving size was not too skimpy (which I find often happens with bacon side orders.) Don't know what else to say. Go to EAT and order the bacon! I'm excited to visit this place again and try more things. They serve organic pasta and polenta fries. And I'll bet the soup is really good... and the desserts...

My friends and I decided to try something different, so we decided to drive to Eat Honolulu, which is in the Gentry Pacific Design Center, right across from Sam Choy's Restaurant on Nimitz. I would have not known about this place since it's a hole in the wall that's not visible, but the food is definitely different, and somewhere to go if you feel like eating healthy, especially since they serve grass fed and free range beef, and organic burgers. Eat Honolulu is only open from 9:30am - 3pm. Veggie Burger - 4 stars - I didn't want to have a heavy meal and eat meat, so since they make their own veggie burgers with Organic Oahu Portobello, I decided to give it a try for $6.99, and it's not one of those processed veggie burgers. The burger was very soft, and combined with their red wine ketchup and sweet home made sesame bun, it was a delightful, and not too heavy or oily lunch for me. They also serve red onions and their sweet EAT pickles on the side, which I realized after I ate my burger that if I added it in the burger, it would have made it much tastier than it already was. I really liked this burger because it was light, flavorful and left a nice non-greasy taste in my mouth and stomach. Polenta Fries - 4 stars - for $3.69 as a side, something really different to try. Didn't have much flavor except for a light cornmeal taste and a spicy kick, but I didn't care for the sauce that came with it, which reminded me of thousand island dressing. If it was made of potato, I'd surely use ketchup, but not sure what other type of other sauce to dip it in since it is cornmeal. It was something authentic compared to other burger places. Service - 3 stars - the cashier (though, after I left, she looked like someone I knew, but she didn't acknowledge me, so I don't think I knew her) was pleasant and nice, but a little dizzy and acted a bit nervous, but paid much attention to me and got my order right. After done eating, they have bins on top of the trash can with a sign to direct customers to put their plates in the bin, basket on the side, and paper trash in the trash can. A convenient place to eat for lunch that's not heart-clogging and different with lots of parking, but when I asked about the burger combo (side and a drink for $11.99), if you usually don't order drinks, they have a water dispenser with lemon, and another deal (which I didn't notice until I read the menu again after lunch) to make it a plate for $4.99 more for two sides with your sandwich or burger (so Iost out on that deal since I ordered the fries itself for $3.69). The place is quaint and not too crowded with lots of tables since it's hidden in the building. I'd go here again to try some other food, but not regularly because of the price and small selection of food. Note: Sorry no pictures because I forgot to bring my camera :(

I had half a chicken panini and thought it was really filling and yummy. The menu seemed small but I think the quality of what EAT offers is very good. There was a grilled cheese panini listed that I want to go back and try. Prices are pretty decent too. Half of a panini was about $5 and it was really big. I don't think I could eat a full panini. I also had the iced tea which was refreshing, plus I could get a free refill. Love the ambiance of EAT and wish they were open on weekends!

Not gonna lie - all of the burgers and sandwich items are absolutely delish & pretty filling!! But latest disappointments with my co-worker is when they ordered take out on French fries, polenta fries, and yesterday it was the deep fried mozzarella. There were only 3 pieces in there with the marinara dipping sauce for $5. Now that is not good! When she ordered regular fries for take-out, she opened the package in our office and there was almost less than half of a normal order. You could literally count the number of fries. And then another time she ordered polenta fries with the sauce and only 3 pieces in there. Really? For the price we pay for these take-out its appalling. And sometime last year Eat changed the size of the soup bowls so the large one for $5 is the former small bowl. It is not worth paying $5 for that small size bowl of soup. We realize cost is going up everywhere but to limit the quantity will lose you business, not gain more business. We work in the same building so it's very sad to see this change in what we all thought was a great place to eat where you get your money's worth. I don't believe that anymore.

This place was hard to find... For me. After driving around only seeing Sam Choy's and Aloha Beer. I wrote to Rod U. "Where is Eat??!!!! I drove passed twice and I didn't see it!" I had thought it had closed or something! He said, "it's on the other side of the road!" OMG! I. Am. A. Moron! Of coarse I don't look on both sides! Who knew it would be in the Design Center!? When I finally got to Eat I thought the space was really unique. It is quiet and open air concept. Everything about the place has a special feel to it, from the chalk board menu, open kitchen views, the patio where you consume the freshly prepared delicacies, to the one private dining room for special parties; this place feels satisfying. Good energy! Since this was my first time here and I was with the BF we went crazy! We both got our own sandwiches. I got the apples and oranges panini ($9), which was salty with the sugar spice bacon and ham, tangy with the pimento cheese mixed with orange, and sweet with the slices of apples! He got the Surf n Turf Burger ($12). I thought it was delicious, so did he but he also thought it was a little well done :-/ However, it was still flavorful with the soft shell crab battered and fried and that Kauai beef. We ALSO got TWO sides each! For $5 you get your choice of two sides! We got the Quinoa Salad, Roasted Potatoes, Sugar Spice Bacon, and Polenta Fries! There was nothing I was unsatisfied with! The Quinoa Salad really feels healthy and lightened the load of all that food we ate. The Polenta Fries were a nice change from your normal potato :D This place is definitely somewhere I want to go back to soon! ****Here Are Some Tips When Eating Here!**** -If you are hungry just know you will be waiting for the food. We had to wait 20 minutes, but they do make it fresh, so you cannot hate. -Teas, sodas, and lemonades are FREE REFILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!! *I don't like when you have to pay for refills! -if you are with someone who isn't a big eater you should just get One Sandwich And a side. I only ate half my Panini. It was pretty big! But left overs are never a bad thing ;D SHOUT OUT TO.....ROD U.!!!!! I would not have found this place with out you!!!!!!! :D

If you're looking for a convenient place to grab a bite but don't want to deal with parking downtown, you're going to love EAT! It's located in the Gentry Design Center (right before City Mill) so there's ample free parking. I went there twice in one week, first time for lunch and the second time for breakfast. For lunch I got the caesar salad with chicken and my BF ordered the chicken plate with sweet mashed potatoes. I enjoyed the salad but my BF was not really sold on his lunch. Price point was okay with me in comparison to what else you can find in the area. I was stoked to see that yelper Brooke M was in the kitchen cooking and she gave me an espresso brownie which was divine! EAT's breakfast sandwich however is where it's at! For $7.95 you can order their breakfast combo which is a breakfast sandwich, coffee and bowl of fruit. You get to pick your fillings and we go the sourdough with scrambled eggs, bacon and cheddar cheese. It was totally winners!!! The fruit was a great touch which counterbalanced the richness of the sandwich. I am certainly going to be returning for this breakfast again. Yelp 365 Challenge: #50/365 (The Breakfast Deal)

The Surf & Turf burger is awesome! HUGE patty topped with soft shell crab, avocado and the "special sauce" is sooooo good! Ask for extra sauce on the side, you'll want to dip everything bite in it. HUGE portion, and definitely worth the price. I added cheddar cheese to it. The polenta fries were really mushy, not what I was expecting. I'm sure it it didn't help that I got take-out so they were probably sitting in the container waiting for me to pick it up so I think I'll try them again next time if I eat there. Also tried the Seasonal Green Salad which was really good. The vinaigrette was really good I also used it to dip my fries in. Just be aware that they get really busy for lunch so expect to wait for your food - even if you phone order.

I was introduced to EAT by a friend and I am definitely a fan! Great lunch spot for sure. The food is tasty, fresh, local and a good value for the price. I had no idea this was here and probably would not have figured it out if my friend didn't work nearby. But now I will definitely be bringing more people around to see it for themselves. Big thumbs up! :)

We used to frequent this place when it was called A Matter of Taste but my recent experience with the new management under Eat Catering & Café to plan an exclusive after hour dinner meeting leaves a very bad aftertaste; so much that we decided to cancel the dinner date we were holding with them & look elsewhere. They failed in follow-up and communications & we were left hanging in the lurch which led me to feeling uneasy and not trusting them handle our event. I'm not saying their food is lacking, it's decent or else I wouldn't have looked into planning something there. It's just that if you choose to plan an event with them, be aware that they are not the easiest to work with.

Went here for lunch. I loved their "Classic Burger". You can't beat the grass fed burger taste. I just wished they had French fries to go with it. I tried the Polenta fries and I didn't like it at all. Good fries would have give. Them five stars. Next time I might try their soft shell crab sandwich.

If location were everything, then EAT would definitely get a higher rating. It's at the Gentry Pacific Design Center in Iwilei, right before the City Mill turn-off on Nimitz. Tons of free parking. Lots of room to eat, both "inside" and out. BUT . . . the place is called EAT, not PARK. EAT has a hard act to follow, being that they used to be Matters of Taste. Matters of Taste had great, quality food and a really nice staff. So how does EAT measure up? I ordered a specialty burger called "Da-Wonderfall" and subbed a turkey patty for the ground beef. The turkey patty was white, spongy and tasteless, almost exactly like the "chicken breast" at Subway -- not all that appealing. This did not go well with the not-so-smokey smoked cheddar, which kind of slipped and slid with the caramelized onions. The thin slices of fuji apples helped to somewhat salvage the texture of this odd mix. I'm not really sure why it was called Da-Wonderfall at all, except that it was kind of falling apart. I'd read good things about the sugar spice bacon and thought that surely a taste was warranted for anything with such an intriguing name. The concept was there -- an interesting blend of sweet and savory -- but something definitely lacked in execution, particular in the crispness department. In terms of service, I feel bad picking on the cashier, but my whole experience there was just awkward. First of all, the young girl seemed like she was hardly paying attention to my order. Then, while the next person ordered, she pretty much had a full-blown, hands-waving meltdown and had to flee the register. Personal crisis? Drugs? Who knows, but it was really odd and definitely not the kind of lasting impression you want to leave with customers. (I later saw her wiping her face, including her nose, on her work shirt.) But, all that said, I can see where this place has potential. It's not awful, and I would definitely be willing to give it another shot, especially to try one of the non-burger dishes and/or coffee.

Hyped for nothing Waited over 35 minutes for our food. Food is average. Surf and turf Burger was good, but ordinary and the crab? Tasted like typical shrimp tempura bottom line nothing special. Can't even make Italian sodas right. Strawberry Italian soda, tasted slight strawberry Watermelon Italian soda, tasted nothing. Pasta had no taste. Not worth the wait, I was 5 minutes away from requesting a refund.

Arrived for lunch. Had previously considered this 4 stars after a great brunch experience. Arrived to a confusing sign saying the kitchen was closing at 1:30 "today" on Thursday the 21st (it was Wednesday the 21st) due to a catering job. Okay so that was confusing but not the end of the world. Ordered Kauai grass-fed beef burger with quinoa and greens since they were out of fish. Friend ordered the ragu. Lots of waiting involved. They started removing the condiments and so forth. They started closing up (we got there at 1:20) and the cashier noticed (as he was leaving) we were still waiting half an hour later and brought out our food which apparently had been sitting in the back. Nobody had called our name. Quinoa and ragu was bland and unseasoned. Kauai beef burger patty was good but it's pretty hard to screw up a patty. We won't be back. There are much better places to eat. I understand this is a catering joint with a cafe, but if you are going to be serving lunch and have fixed business hours you need to provide service during them. Removing condiments while you have unserved seated customers is not the way to run a business.

EAT Honolulu has it all going on, except good value. The food is really really good. I love the vibe of the place. Parking is never an issue. The folks at the counter are friendly and efficient enough. However... Today for lunch I ordered the Soft Shell Crab Sandwich w/ Chili Aioli and an iced tea. The bill came to $11. As I waited for them to call my name and number, I wondered what sides came with my sandwich. I hadn't noticed. So I picked up the menu to see: None. No less than five times on their new menu, they offer to "Make it a plate @just $4.99 more: Just pick two sides." If I had chosen to take them up on that offer, my "plate" lunch would have cost me $16. That's too much. As it was, I really enjoyed the sandwich, but it wasn't enough, and I left still a little hungry. I realize it might seem like a contradiction to rant about the value while giving Eat Honolulu 4-stars. In spite of the perceived poor value, I really enjoy my infrequent lunches there. If I perceived better value, I'd probably enjoy frequent lunches at EAT Honolulu.

Edit: Since writing this review I was contacted by the co-owner regarding the incidents in question. She stated that issues concerning customer service were rectified and that they were striving for an even higher level of customer service. She graciously invited me to return within the next few weeks to experience their new menu. Adding a star for that and looking forward to completely deleting this review in a few weeks. Since writing my initial review they have let me down multiple times. On one occasion they forgot to give us our food. The wait is usually pretty long so when I didn't get my food in 10 minutes I was not overly concerned. At the 20 minute mark I approached the counter. They unapolegetically told me that they forgot to prepare our food. I told them that we were in a rush now since we were on our lunch break. We did not get a discount however they did offer us one piece of cake for the two of us. In addition I am allergic to pineapple and the dessert had you guessed it...pineapple. The lady shrugged her shoulders, apologized and said she would give me dessert next time. On another visit I was treated poorly by the register girl. She was blatantly rude. I asked to speak to the manager and she stepped the attitude up even more. The owner came out and talked to me and offered to give me 10% off at the next visit. The owner also confirmed that they had multiple complaints about the woman and that he had plans of taking her off the register.

We loved it. We normally like to try several menu items on our first visit. Caesar Salad was very good followed by a nice Pasta with loads of fresh ingredients, then came the Chicken Taco which is one of the best Taco's you'll have in Honolulu. Next the Pulled Pork Cuban Sandwich which was really good. Lamb Miro which is a fresh House Roasted upscale rendition of Gyro, only problem was it was missing a flavorful sauce but that is easy to fix. Overall we can't wait to return. Side note: Chef's Table available for private Parties with reasonable prices. BYOB and lot's of free parking. Located across from Sam Choy's

Random lunch call from Tim P., we cruise around town finding a place that neither of us have tried, yet heard about. Out of spontaneous epiphanies, Tim exclaims, 'EAT' and we set fourth... to an unlikely location sandwiched between a questionable K-mart and soon-to-be-Lowes. The concept, although simple, is a collection of pretty interesting flavors assembled in a tasty package. I, on one hand, enjoyed my meal; Tim though... may have struggled to find bliss in his simple dishes. The GOOD: I ordered something that was simple and common. Maybe not common to this island, but something that is simple enough that even anyone can do it from home - so why don't we? Because its flavors are so complex, many people are failures at combining ingredients to form anything more difficult that a PB&J. At Eat I ordered a Cuban (no, not a cigar) a Latin Panini if you will. First they take two kinds of the same animal, Ham and Kahlua Pork then add an uncommon cheese, Swiss, and finally invite Pickles to the party and BAM - grill it and you have a sandwich that's good enough for the Commies, and that's good eats to me without all that government involvement. Tim P. ordered a mixed bag of edible goodness... unfortunately, he wasn't as satisfied as me, I think. The BAD: not much bad for me in the taste factor, it took them long to make it, which I understand they are 'busy' and such, but it's a pretty simple sandwich that gets grilled in a George Foreman. Another downer is it's location. It is tucked in the Gentry Pacific Design Center which is pretty much furniture and interior design accessories. No real reason for anyone normal to be in the area, but a good find when you locate it. I would have never known what or where it was if it were not for Tim P. and his insatiable desire for culinary excellence. Overall: I enjoyed my meal which is comparably priced with all other lunches on the island. A $7 seems to be norm. Would I eat here again, sure, I dig it and I would probably order the same thing again since It was tasty. As for Tim P.... that may be a different story.

REASON FOR GOING: I love coming here for my work lunch dates! This place is only open to the public on weekdays. Weekends I think they still cater, but the restaurant side is not open. EAT is a perfect name for this restaurant as I love to eat, and when I come here- I want to eat everything! SERVICE: As far as the service goes, it is okay. This would have been a five star review however I feel that sometimes, service can be slow. I've order coffee from here and had to wait 15 minutes. It would be one thing if there were tons of people in line but it was only myself. I look past that thinking that it may have been a rare instance. Today though, I gave my order to the cashier, I asked for the mac n cheese, house salad, and coconut water. When she repeated my order she forgot the coconut water. I told her again but she must have not heard me. I thought to myself it is okay, it was not meant to be as I dont think it was a necessary purchase. When we ordered the cheesecake for dessert, the same cashier asked did you want it now, and I said, yes please. We waited for a bit, and no one else is eating at the restaurant (we were there about 11AM). After 10 minutes passed i started to walk up and she saw me, darted to get the cheesecake ready. This cashier has always been nice but I think she just might have a lot on her mind. SELECTION + PRICE: The menu changes by season but is always filled with interesting and delicious parings. Today I had the mac n cheese which was AMAZING and for dessert I had the lemon basil cheesecake from Otto cake. everything was good! I cannot stop thinking about the cheesecake though, it is light fluffy yet has a flavorful crust! MMMmmm!!! VALUE: Eat offers a nice atmosphere- away from the office. The food is really delicious and is good to go for a work meeting and these people even cater!

I was treated here for lunch. We had the surf and turf (veggie patty) and polenta french fries. My lunch was super tasty and more than filling! Then we also had Otto Cheesecake (Mocha Flavor). Love, love, love the meal and Otto's cheesecake!!! I wish there were more seats since it gets super busy during the lunch rush. It is self-serve, no waitress, and we waited 15 minutes for our food. But, we were in no rush so we were patient and the wait was worthwhile. I will definitely try the rest of their menu in the near future!

Surf and Turf Burger and some polenta fries. What I liked: the combinations of flavors and the meat taste with the fresh cut vegetables and there was also a yummy sauce somewhere in the mix, the fact that they cook your meat EXACTLY how you ask (we went for medium) and not two steps over. Well Done...no thank you! What I didn't like: polenta fries were nothing to go crazy about, my soft shell crab was really small while my friend's was bigger than her burger. I would definitely return and try the BLT or just soft shell crab sandwich AND just because you can taste the freshness of their ingredients.

I work in the area, so I've seen this place grow up. This review is for the 2011 menu. Smoked ahi spread sandwich-I was addicted for about 6 weeks! It's simple, but a great combination of the ahi spread, radishes, and a tosted multigrain bread. I think it's the toasted bread that does it! The tacos are also delicious, and a good value. Soft corn tortillas, fresh fillings. Cuban - good and greasy. Not as flavorful as some cubans I've had, but not a bad choice. Reuben - classic. Sugar & Spice Bacon burger - it was delicious except the edges of the bacon were burnt. I just picked off the edges and enjoyed the rest. I reccommend getting their soup of the day - they have never disappointed, and I must have had about 10 varieties. The chef seems to enjoy creating new ones. Today I had the Southwest Chili and it had large chunks of steak with fresh corn. Pleasantly spicey! The soft shell crab sandwich is good. It's one large crab with a nice aioli on a soft bun. If you're the type of person that LOVES soft shell crab, you will enjoy this. The service is much improved in terms of speed and prioritizing orders. The cashier knows me by name, which is a nice friendly touch. I also appreciated how hard the chef's wife works explaining the menu and offering suggestions. Since I see that the owners read these reviews - here are some suggestions: 1. Offer at least one "better" breakfast dish, like a quiche or an omelette, or better yet, biscuits and gravy! I would love to eat here for breakfast, but I can get eggs at Zippy's. I bet you would make a KILLER breakfast gravy. 2. Do a beer tasting dinner! There's a pretty loyal following for Andy Baker who does beer tastings at Bar35 on Wednesdays and does dinner pairings at several local restaurants. 3. Every so often, it would be great to cut a cupcake or cookie into samples. I think you would sell even more.

YUM! we had no idea of this place when we ate there. We happen to be in the design center and was starving. The food was awesome! The Panini & burger is worth going back for. I like how it was simple and casual and all about the food.

I love the Caesar salad here. Add chicken on it and it's a winner for lunch. The chicken taco is very good too. I'd like to use the back room and book a private event to see what the chef is capable of doing with tasting menus. Update as soon as this happens....

My employer has been using this business for a few years, including when it was Matters of Taste. Chef Dave does a great job of providing different menus to us each year. Considering most of the attendees at our events are repeat, it's nice to have such diverse menus. There are items that make me salivate even though I've just eaten...braised beef short ribs to name just one. He does a fantastic job with his desserts and his veggies too (asparagus with sauerkraut?). I've only been to the cafe once, and I got the tacos. They were fantastic and pretty filling considering they were only a couple bucks. I just wish they were closer to the office...

My husband and I went there for breakfast. They story is a little confusing, but believe me, that's how Eat Catering and Café made us felt. I ordered an egg and ham plate for myself and a sandwich for my husband. They totally screwed up my order. They made my egg and ham into a sandwich, so when I told them they took back the sandwich, but instead taking back the wrong order, they took back my husband's sandwich which was the right order. So started from there, was one mistake after another, they forgot about the cheese, and used wrong bread. They forgot the add cheese in my husband's sandwich, so they made a new sandwich for him. Later, the waitress brought out a new sandwich and said she was going to throw away the wrong one, but my husband already finished half of the sandwich, so he asked the waitress if he can keep both. The waitress told us to hold but never came out again. As we were all wondering what was going on, they called me for my egg and ham plate and told me that they threw away the new sandwich they just made!!! Did that even make any senses!! Ok, just forget it, but then I notice not only my eggs were cold, but also they were in weird shape, more like triangles! Come on, don't tell me they recycled that sandwich and used the eggs for my egg and ham plate!! I think they just did! And they told they threw away the sandwich! What a lie!

Hard to find - it's located inside the Design Center. The fish sandwich was exactly what I wanted. Good, fresh, quick, and well priced. Be sure to make it a combo - the mashed sweet potatoes were heaven!

This is a true hidden gem for a downtown lunch. Located just inside the Gentry Pacific Design center, across from Sam Choy's Eat Honolulu is a gourmet cafe that's perfect for your lunch or catering needs. The polenta fries are not to miss (especially the dipping sauce). The food is fresh and made to order so be prepared for a culinary delight. This cafe also caters and upon request will do private parties and dinners, so keep it in mind for your next event. I've never been disappointed by a meal here. Be sure to request the sugar smoked bacon with your panini, it's worth it! A perfect spot for a lunch followed by browsing the many shops in the design center, whether you're looking for unique balinese furniture or a new piano or keyboard from Piano Planet. This is truly a not-to-miss destination among the many Nimitz highway eateries.

Good food, yet the minimal service could be a turn-off. Came here for lunch and ordered the cuban panini, reuben panini, side of potatoes and coleslaw. The sandwiches were super yummy and filling, I could only finish half! The side dishes were exceptional, should've ordered more of them!

Best caterer in town? Could be. The wife & husband team (sommelier/manager & chef) are cool, come up with great menu options, work with my (limited) budget, deliver on time, have nice platters & wine glasses, are reasonably priced, and do their best to be available even on such short notice that others said they couldn't do it (yes, I've done this several times). Their food gets rave reviews and is creative & different enough that everyone wants to know where it comes from. I haven't eaten in the cafe at Gentry Pacific so I can't say how it compares, but certainly their custom menus are excellent. I originally came to them when Indigo wasn't available a few times (don't do Sunday or Monday, don'tcha know) and now just straight to EAT.

I Heart Sugar & Spice Bacon I don't care how long I have to wait for it (which really isn't that long considering that they make everything to order), or how much it costs (which really isn't that much when you consider the quality of the ingredients). In all seriousness, though- EAT is really amazing. Their flavor and texture combinations are unreal, and you can tell that they use really fresh, high quality ingredients. Does it take longer than McDonalds? Yes. Yes it does. For those of you who like their food to be fast there are other options out there for you. Please utilize them so that the rest of us who don't mind waiting a little longer for excellent food don't have to stand behind you in line. I leave you with two words: Nutella Latte

Came here for lunch with a friend during a weekday recently. I had the Kalua Pork Panini. It was quite good. The only suggestion I might make is that they include some cole slaw on the side, or some apple slices or something else of the fruit-vegetable type to round the meal out a bit. Plenty of free parking in the Gentry Design parking lot.

Maybe if I actually ate there it would have been different (atmosphere and ambience) but I expected more. I ordered through Aloha 2 Go. The food came just like it would from the kitchen I suppose, but the soft shell crab sandwich was a disappointment, the asparagus was nothing like pictured below, and the mushrooms was portioned like two tablespoons. It was disappointing indeed. I did not order any fries, knowing that fries do not travel well...I may as well say that this complete order did not travel well. Maybe the asparagus and mushrooms played a disappearing act on the way to my home by half an order or something and the soft shell crab sandwich, well, there was not much of a crab to begin with. Perhaps I should give them the benefit of the doubt and EAT there before give them a heave-ho grade, yah? Perhaps in the future, I'll try again...then again, maybe not.

This place is a hidden gem. From the blt to the polenta fries, everything I have had there was fresh, made to order and exceeded my expectations. Kudos.

Rating: 3.5 stars The Good: Good food, definitely no frills (see below). There is a mix of food -- breakfast, lunch, soups, salads. Possibly the best priced ice tea I've seen in a while (and brewed - not soda machine). I haven't exactly figured out how they operate, but there were a couple of things that were on the menu that were not available (and we went at like 11am), but - I went for the lamb, and for the soft pork tacos which I heard were yum. Lamb gyros and the soft pork tacos were right on the money - and very reasonably priced. Both had good amounts of filling and everything tasted fresh and juicy. Having lived in So Cal for the past few years, I was thrilled to find a decent soft taco here! I'm a fan. The Not-So-Good: EAT is located inside Gentry Pacific Design Center. I understand Matters of Taste was here before so maybe I was a little confused by the setting - you're inside the design center, but the seating is like indoors, but kind of in the walkway area. It was like being outside, but inside. Kind of weird. Plus, we went on the weekend so it was really quiet (perhaps it always is) and a little echoey. Not exactly the place you want to have either a loud or private conversation. Other than the setting and the lack of vegetarian options (for those who may be wondering), I'd recommend it.
