I heard a lot of good things about Jackie's Diner, and I was craving pasteles one night; so, we ended up here. There's not too many seats available, and there's a lot of people standing around either waiting for seats, or for take-out. The menu is very limited (which is good, so indecisiveness wasn't much of an option!) so we wanted to get a gist of everything and ordered the- Pastele Plate, and the Hawaiian Plate. The Pastele Plate had a Bacalao (which is a salted Puerto Rican cod salad), Spanish Rice, a scoop of mac, and a mild pastele. I've had pastele where the edges were hard (which means its hella old or dehydrated), but Jackie's pasteles were moist, and delicious! I wish there was more salad since it was my first time trying and it was the bomb! My friend had the Hawaiian Plate, the portions were a little smaller than I expected, but the food was good nonetheless. It had Poi, Lomi Salmon, Chicken Long Rice, and Kalua Pig. I was craving haupia so it's a bummer that this particular Plate didn't have haupia! Pipikaula wasn't even an option as a side order because they don't sell it. The price overall, with two sodas, came out to $24. I'd probably come back for the pasteles if anything, as for the Hawaiian Plate, Helena's is still a winner!

Drove by, walked by, never really paid much attention to dis place until today. Somehow decided to finally check it out and all I can say is I been missing out! Had da pastele plate and wuz da bomb! Wifey had da bbq ribs, so far da best ribs we had on dis island. Bacalao salad wuz shmackin ono! Pasteles wuz on point! Gandule rice wuz jus like ma used to make! We will definitely be back! So far, as ghetto as Waimalu Shopping Center looks, fo us das our "restaurant row"! Fo realz!

love this place! Where else can you go and have Puerto Rican and Hawaiian food at the same time and not break the bank? The husband and I can get a full meal for about $25, and take home left overs.

I just started looking on yelp the day before i decided to try this because i knew i wanted to try some good authentic hawaiian food. One of the places i came across was jackies diner and OH MY GOD is it good. If you are looking to try some of the best authentic hawaiian food this is your place. The prices are not bad and the lau lau and chicken long rice is onolicious!!! I would definitly recommend this to anyone looking to try some good food here on the beautiful island of hawaii.

I usually come here when I have a craving for Hawaiian food. It's pretty good. I know it's not the "best ever" but it's pretty good. I love the laulau/kalua pig combo plate. I usually substitute the lomi salmon with an extra haupia, since I don't like the salmon. The workers there are good about that and friendly in general. The prices aren't bad too. They're located in a old strip mall (where Shiro's is) full of a variety of eating places. Their interior is lacking and everything in there is on the older side. It's a place where you just wanna eat and go. If you're in the area of pearl city and aiea and craving Hawaiian food, or pasteles, I would recommend this place to you.

Located in Waimalu Shopping Center, Jackie's Diner has the best Hawaiian food, the best stew and the best Pastele Plate! We always go directly there from the airport for our first local meal after any trip (we travel a lot). Warning: cash only. We love their stew... choose tripe or beef. Their haupia is the best! I love to order the stew and pastele plate. Choose the hot or mild pastele. The watercress soup is also ono! Only in Hawaii, a Korean guy owns a place that serves Puerto Rican and Hawaiian food with nice Filipino girl waitresses.

I was really excited to eat here since I'd heard they had really good food. I love hawaiian food, I love pasteles... all of which they serve here. I was really hungry so it was hard for me to pick what I wanted to eat. Pasteles? Tripe stew?? Laulau? Chicken Long Rice? I finally decided on chicken long rice and laulau. The bf had tripe stew and kalua pig. The chicken long rice had a good flavor, but there was no chicken in it. The laulau was pretty moist, and tasted pretty good. But what was really scary was the tripe stew. My bf didn't want to eat it at first. He's so used to eating his mom's super delicious tripe stew (which looks nothing like the one at Jackie's) so I didn't blame him. After some encouragement, he took a taste. The look of horror on his face was enough to know that it sucked. BUT.... knowing he's really picky, I decided I wanted to taste it for myself. WRONG MOVE. :( It tasted like they didn't clean the tripe good or something because it was really bad. And trust me, I like tripe. I eat it in pho, i eat it at dim sum, in tripe stew... but i have never tasted such yucky tripe in my life. We felt so embarrassed that the entire bowl was still full, but we just couldn't subject our taste buds to such torture. If I came back here, i would stick to the laulau and give the pasteles a try. I wouldn't even eat the tripe stew if they told me it was free.

I tasted the pastele. I was disappointed because it was so salty. I thought it was just mine. But hubby said his was too salty also. Bakalau salad tasted like Italian dressing was poured all over it. Maybe I'll return and try another dish.

Another cash-only place. Sigh... it'd be so much easier and we'd eat here more often if they accepted plastic. But I digress... The food here is good. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, you know? Hawaiian food is warm, fresh and plentiful and I think I can eat pasteles every week. They're pretty yummy here. Consistent except for one time that the pasteles weren't as tasty as usual... was a bummer, but I think it was a fluke. The haupia and chicken long rice are AWESOME. It's kinda hard to make a good haupia, but Jackie's has flavor and just the right texture. The chicken long rice isn't as good as my grandma's (hehehe), but it's nice and peppery with lots of flavor. The service is pretty decent; nothing special. And the place is uber casual and good to just go to when you're hungry and just want somewhere easy and chill to eat.

After months of talking about this place, we finally tried it. It was good and filling. My husband had the mild pastele and beef stew plate (comes with white rice/Spanish rice at an add'l price) and I had 2 pasteles (1 mild and 1 hot) with a side of mac salad. The mac was nothing special, boiled macaroni with enough mayo to keep it together. It was on the bland side but since I was eating pasteles, I didn't need to add any seasoning. I couldn't tell the difference between the mild or the hot. Both were very good and although I didn't finish them, I was bursting at the seams - ready to pass out. My husband enjoyed his meal, it took awhile for his stew to cool down but he didn't mind because the heat melted the onions (his nemesis). I noticed onions in the pasteles as well but it was melted enough that it doesn't taste like onions anymore so I didn't mention it to him. Our waitress was very friendly and sweet, my only complaint was that she didn't come by to ask if we needed refills. This is a good place to get your Puerto Rican food fix but you'll be disappointed if you're looking for panadijas (which we were).

One day I suddenly was craving for Hawaiian Food. Helena's was closed, and we didn't want to drive to town just for some generic-fast-food Poi Bowl in Ala Moana (Plus, APEC was happening, didn't want to deal with traffic) So my fiance & I found ourselves tumbling into Jackie's Diner. & I thank my feet who just walked inside, it was more than I expected. I had the Kalua pork w/ chicken long rice, with haupia & lomi salmon. My fiance had the LauLau (Believe me, he LOVES laulau) and beef stew plate. My kalua pork was moist but not drainy with the oil/water or whatever. It was perfect I should say, the taste of it was not salty at ALL. Lomi Salmon was good too. Staff there are pretty efficient and they say, "Thank You' all the time. Btw, bring cash, that's all they take :)

It's true, I wouldn't know a real Pastele if it hit me in the face. What I do know is that there aren't many places close by where I can get them and that whether it's authentic or not the one's here at Jackie's are cheap and tasty (ala carte anyway, the meal seems pricey). Here I also like the beef stew, flavorful, tender, and savory it was a big hit at a recent group gathering. The Hawaiian foods okay, but no Yama's or Helena's. This turned out to be a good alternative to Chinese food--which my pregnant friend said makes her throw up (Sorry ADD causes me to add random unnecessary anecdotes) While the service isn't exactly blazing they always seem to be friendly. Not a place that I go often, but unless you can find a good side of the road alternative, a decent place to grab a Pastele.

I intended to go to Helena's, but I found out they are closed on weekends. So I made a trek out to Waimalu for some hawaiian food at Jackie's. I was skeptical because Helena's is my favorite place for hawaiian food. No one can top it right? I'm so glad Helena's was closed so I was forced to try Jackie's. Since it was my first time, we ended up trying all the hawaiian staples: LauLau: Very good! Lots of leaf and lots of meat. A very nice portion of lau lau. I was sad that there was no fish inside the lau lau, but it was still moist and delicious Chicken Long Rice: Sometimes chicken long rice tends to be too oily or too salty. Jackie's was just right! Lomi salmon: This was good, but not great. I would order it again, but it didn't have enough of that tomato/onion acidity that makes lomi salmon awesome. Kalua Pig: Meh. It tasted like smoke. Oh and I think there was some pork in there. Beef Stew: I normally don't order beef stew since it all tends to taste the same to me. Beef stew is so ordinary or boring. That is unless it's from Jackie's. I loved their beef stew. The meat was tender, but not fatty. The stew was like a flavor explosion from an ordinarily bland dish. I'm not sure if this was a beef stew impostor because I can't get over how good this was. Haupia: I don't really care for coconut or haupia, but Jackie's haupia is crazy good. A dish really says something when you don't like an ingredient, but would order it every time. I am extremely happy with the food at Jackie's. I will never be afraid to try this place again. If I want Hawaiian food, I might just want Jackie's over Helena's.

Finally tried their food after visiting the area a lot of times. I had the 3 choice Hawaiian Plate. I had laulau, kalua pig and the chicken long rice. Let 's just say for Koreans making Hawaiian Food....it really was OK. Yes, just OK. The laulau was the best of the three choices. It had a nice portion of pork, a small piece of the pork fat and covered in just enough leaf. The kalua pig wasn't salty enough or smoky enough. My kalua pig from the crock pot tastes 10 times better. Promise. The long rice was just long rice....noticed I didn't say CHICKEN....it didn't have any in it. Not even a small piece. It tasted good but just no chicken. The plate also came with lomilomi salmon, poi and haupia. All in all...it was an okay lunch. I'll try it again someday.

Interesting stuff served up here. Pasteles, pronounced Paa-TEL-le, is a traditional Puerto Rican dish similar to a tamale. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pa… Minus the corn husk, replaced with a banana leaf and mixed into the corn meal some green bananas. Now don't go and flip out before you try this stuff, I'm telling you this is ONO! And no this doesn't taste like a banana split either!! Actually there isn't really a banana flavor at all, well I couldn't taste any. The rice which HAS to be ordered along with the Pasteles, is somewhat like Mexican rice, this time minus the red tomato base and insert some lentils and spices. YUMMY! Two type of Pasteles are served, mild and SPICY! Nothing that could kill a small child, just enough KA-pow to let you savor the heat. Jackie's is a small space in the Waimalu Shopping center, fight for a parking spot and stop in and try this stuff, it's really ono!! For reeels!!

I've eaten here quite a few times over the years, its always hit or miss. On the good days, the food is spectacular. I'm talking Liberace spectacular: glittery outfit, big hair, colorful makeup, obviously flaming. Coming out to a huge, standing ovation, slow curtsy, and doing his thing type spectacular. On the good days, I want to dance on the tables and play piano and do all the things I've always to do. On the good days.... On the bad days, and there have been a lot, I've actually walked out disgusted without finishing the meal. I paid, but literally stopped eating in disgust and just left. How can this place, of whom has tickled my fancy like only great Hawaiian food can, be so cruel and foul-tasting? Its mind-boggling actually. And the prices.... don't get me started! I thought us Hawaiians not supposed to rip off each other? Maybe cuz they not actual Hawaiians cooking the Hawaiian food! And what, no more kama'aina discount? They serve Hawaiian food, no more part-hawaiian half off or something??? There was never a gradual increase in price and the prices have gone up and up long before this so-called recession. Unreal! Lau lau is boss, no kidding. This is their one "go-to" move, like that dude on the court that can only drive right but no one can stop him. Every single time I've had the lau lau, MEAN! Kalua Pig can range from deliciously moist to straight up dry. Its a flip of the coin with this one. Be careful. The pasteles are always average, not awesome but not crappy. I think someone said the pastele shop was better. Well almost anywhere is better. The Spanish rice is good. I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head that has better Spanish rice. The bacalao salad is a weird addition to a Hawaiian plate or even plate lunch, kind of like the kim chee and sprouts, but it works and is usually always tasty. You know what they do have that is winner? Taegu and haupia!! Readiliy available at all times in the 'fridge. Maybe its because i know they can be great but this rating is what they get for letting me down and breaking my heart. Jackie's Diner, that lust-filled affair you know is wrong but keeping coming back to and you can't figure out why. Forgot to mention that the only reason they get 3 stars instead of 2 is the beef stew. This is another one that is always reliable. Not the best on the island, but really REALLY close.

Jackie's is a great place to go for quality Hawaiian food. In fact its the only thing I've ever ordered there. I always get the Hawaiian Plate with Kalua pig and lau lau. I think you can swap out the pig or lau lau for squid luau but I never do it. The Hawaiian plate also comes with Poi, Lomi Salmon, and a little piece of Haupia for desert. I say little mostly because it's so so good I wish it was bigger. Every time I get my plate I wish the portions were a little bit bigger, but after I finish I am always stuffed. Sometimes even to full to walk down to Baldwin's for a Keiki shave ice. I especially like Kalua pig and the lau lau because its not overly salty. I add a couple shakes of Hawaiian salt to my lau lau to make it perfect.

The pastele plate is a must try here. The pasteles do have pork in them and although they are not large in size, they make up in taste. The Spanish rice is excellent and would give The Pastele Shop some tough competition. The bacalao salad is nice and not too salty. Mac salad is just right, creamy but not too fancy.

been eating here for years now. the hawaiian plate with lau lau is my favorite, but the pasteles are great as well. the owners are friendly and the food is made fresh. i often call in to special order their haupia and lomi salmon for my own parties because it's the best around. the lau lau is a good size with lots of leaf and meat. i saw a kitchen prep guy hand chopping a vat of onions and tomatoes for lomi salmon, so you know this place is all fresh made daily. not a really big dining room, but service is always great once you get a table. by far my favorite place for hawaiian food on the island.

The pasteles and tripe stew are the bomb!! Reminds me of my Auntie Irene's cooking. This place is always packed no matter what time of the day it is. Price is really reasonable considering the amount of food you get.

  • Royce S.

I'm not a Hawaiian food connoisseur by any means but I like the Hawaiian plate offerings at Jackie's. The price is lower than a lot of other places. I especially like their haupia and my wife has gone back to order full trays of it. The location and furnishings aren't the best. It doesn't take much of a crowd to fill the dine-in tables up.

This place sucks ass! If you're looking for GOOD Hawaiian food the place to go: People's Cafe. I've eaten at Jackie's probably a total of 3 times and every time my boyfriend orders their side order of wings, its always red and bloody.. They don't know how the hell to cook it and they've consistently done that. Last night was the night that I decided that mediocre food isn't worth the hassle! The owner saw me flagging down a waitress to tell her to give us another set of wings, and she didn't even tell the girl that I needed help. Me not feeling well + crappy ass service AND shitty food = Not a happy camper, and NOT a returning customer! Screw this place!

  • Lilian N.

We normally come here for the Hawaiian food, which is always consistent and tasty. This is a typical diner with vinyl-type booths in a narrow space. The kalua pig and tripe stew are exceptionally flavorful in my opinion. The laulau, poi, and lomi salmon were also pretty good, and the prices are reasonable enough, considering a Hawaiian plate can cost an arm and a leg these days...As far as the puertorican food, well, i guess since having authentic pasteles and gandules rice in my lifetime, I would rate Jackie's as decent. If you're craving authentic pasteles and gandules rice at great prices, go to Taste of Puerto Rico in Ewa...

The first time I ate here was a year ago. I ended up walking into the Diner with my husband, because we were curious about Puerto Rican food. I've never had a pastele, but since then i've been coming back. Service is always friendly, and food comes after a short wait. They serve a different variety of plate lunch, to include all the good local stuff. I'm a fan.

    (4)
  • Dave K.

Beef stew, has really good flavor. That's pretty much what I eat when I go here. I need to try other stuff. The bacalao salad was a trip. first time I've ever ate that. Pastele, I think the pastele shop beats them on taste. But the only reason I'm posting something is because their stew is that good. Ono. Oh, I'm referring to the beef stew, they have both beef and tripe. and staff is good there too.

  • Javier C.

Was nice to find a place in Hawaii that serves bacalao salad and pasteles with yellow rice, even though the plate is not even close to real Puerto Rican food. Real pasteles have pork or beef not olives. Other than that food is hot and filling.

  • Travis H.

You won't find too many tourist here. This place serves Puerto Rican and Local Hawaiaan food like Kahlua pork. They serve plate lunches that combine these two cuisines together. ALthough it may sound like a weird combination, it really is a great marriage. They give you lots of food, it's cheap and a great way to see where and what the locals eat.

The bacalao salad reminds me of something my Spanish mother used to make me for supper when I lived in Spain-- but even better! The composition is very simple, but I've never been able to balance the flavors correctly myself and Jackie's gets it spot on. The pasteles are amazing. I'd never been a fan of them at the Puerto Rican restaurants I had eaten at, but they are my favorite item off of the menu here after the tripe stew, which is a must try. The Hawaiian plate, which comes with some great haupia, is also probably the best I've had on the island. The servers are usually pretty attentive. The food always seems to come quickly once you've ordered-- as long as your server remembers that you exist. In other words, don't sit in the "hidden" booth because on one occasion the waitress kept forgetting we were there (you'll know what I mean by hidden when you go there). The prices are good. The portions don't look as filling as they are but they are plentiful. Just try to go during a down time because the seating is limited.

Love it! My go to place to get pasteles and Spanish rice with bakalau salad!!! Chili pepper water on the side I can't wait to enjoy my hot pasteles coming up now! They do everything ho have yummy Lau Lau and tripe strew (so I'm told ). If you don't have time you can get it to go throw a few Lau Lau and pastele in your freezer for when you are ready and heat it up at home! Perfect. My hubby's new favorite is the ribs. Yup so tender and cooked so well. Anyone who has ever been to jackies knows what's up!

Headed to Jackie's Diner because I was craving pasteles and gandule rice; this plate also comes with bacalao and mac salad. The rice and bacalao salad are pretty awesome. The rice is moist with pieces of pork, gandule beans, and olives. The bacalao salad is a simple iceberg lettuce salad with tomatoes and onions but the dressing is special, it reminds me of an Italian dressing with shredded dried fish. Vinegary, salty, and savory, next time I'm gonna ask for all bacalao salad, no mac. Jackie's also makes a decent Hawaiian Plate. For the price, you get lau lau, kalua pig, lomi salmon, long rice, poi (or rice), and a haupia square. It's a lot of food and everything's pretty tasty. Of you're in Aiea and don't want to drive to town, Jackie's is your stop for a pastele or Hawaiian plate.

This is not the nicest restaurant in the world, but they are cranking out some pretty authentic Puerto Rican food. I was so excited when I saw they are serving tripe stew and pasteles. Oh, and let's not forget that the price is right. It is pretty cheap, so that is a bonus. They also serve Hawaiian food, so it was an interesting meal. I ordered a plate which came with arroz con guandules, one pastel, and tripe stew. Everything was pretty authentic and delicious. I was actually contemplating ordering a second bowl of tripe stew, but I held out so I could enjoy my haupia. The rice and guandules was I liar to my mom's and the pasteles were good, but I would have liked more meat. It was more heavy on the masa, and not so heavy on the meat. It was still really tasty though. My hubby ordered a Hawaiian plate, which came with laulau, white rice, mac salad, and he got his own tripe stew too. It was all really good. I think the highlight for me, however, was the Puerto Rican food :)

Really good portion sizes for the price. I had the Hawaiian Plate and haven't had much experience with authentic Hawaiian, but it seems legit. My girlfriend had the pastele plate and loved it. The mild pastele was very mild. We couldn't finish because of the huge portions but would definitely come back to try more.

After spending so many hours doing my hair at a nearby salon, I was starving! The golden thing about technology is you can call ahead of time, order, arrive to get your food, pay and you're outskis! Hawaiian food is my 2nd favorite food of all time (after Filipino food of course). I automatically got a Hawaiian Plate that comes with lau lau, kalua pig, rice/poi, lomi salmon, and haupia! The portions are massive, even the haupia! The lomi salmon was definitely fresh and was everything I want in it. I definitely want to go back and try their poi. They're located in the Waimalu Shopping Center next to some other great restaurants I'm sure. Their layout is booths set up all along the wall. Waiting for more customers to step in and have a seat for lunch/dinner. The staff are all willing to serve if they're probably not having a bad day. Take your time to enjoy Hawaiian food, have a sat and eat up!

411: CASH ONLY! Affordable & super tasty! I may be biased being I'm Puerto Rican and they have pasteles but theirs make my stomach and mouth very happy. They are almost as good as my grandma's. The interior of the joint is far from anything to write home about. It's dull, has limited if any decorations and to be truthful doesn't look like it's the cleanest lol You're not bringing your future girlfriend on a first date here (I'm just sayin'). But if you're in the neighborhood you've gotta grab a few pasteles or some of their amazing local food, whether for then or for later. Amazed, we bought our grub to go, drove back to our place in North Shore (by Sunset beach) and when we got home our food felt like it was just taken off the stove! We were dang impressed!

This is the place to go for Pastele! I don't really know where else they sell that but it's pretty good. They also have Hawaiian food here too reasonably priced and not bad. Very friendly staff and owner.

This is my go to spot!! I have been coming here for years, & it never gets old. Living so far away from my family, means no more home cooked Puerto Rican Meals. I heard about this place years back & decided to check it out. Immediately I fell in love with the spaghetti mac salad. It's just the way my grandmother made. Sometimes they don't have it, so it's a hit or miss. The gandule rice is the best I've had so far on the island. I've had plenty, including homemade ones, & this one just always does it for me. The pastele is not a traditional pastele, but all the flavors are there and that's good for me. Closest to home/gmas I can get!! The Haupia is winning as well always get some and an order to go as well!!! Just about everything here is good. My son really enjoys the kalua pig plate. That says a lot because he is a picky eater. The service is always excellent. Same women cooking in the back and the younger girls wait staffing. Always A++ in my book. Prices are pretty reasonable!! Cash Only & parking is convenient!!

Food is great. They close at 9 on Thursdays but when I walked in at 8:47 to order take out they were already closed which upset me because I was craving Hawaiian food all day. They should change their signs if they plan to stop serving food earlier then scheduled

Yikes! We're in a quandary between the Hawaiian, local and Puerto Rican menus. Because of my indecision and the "hurry up, I'm hungry stare down" from my hubby, I chose the lau lau and tripe stew plate while he chose the fried chicken wings. The portions are pretty good but the lau lau is smaller than Helena's or Haili's yet just as tasty. The lau lau on my plate hat a nice proportion of pork fat to meat ratio, tripe stew was served in a soup bowl, a scoop of Mac salad, a small portion of fresh poi, and creamy haupia filled me to the "brim". Hubby's fried chicken wings were meaty and GB&D with Kim chee, 2 scoops of rice and Mac salad. How much more local plates can you get? We've tried their pasteles, gandule rice and bacalao salad from their Puerto Rican menu before. We admit we're not PR connoisseurs and the only other comparison that we could make is from the Pastele Shop located in Kalihi. As comparisons go, BOTH are flavorful but with a slight nod towards Pastele shop (especially Pastele shop's bacalao salad). I shouldn't compare because Jackie's is the ONLY place that I can think of that serves BOTH cuisines and some other local favorites (their chop steak is a "signature" dish according to the owner's brother)! And they do it well to satisfy any moment of indecision.

If your looking for a good place to eat Hawaiian food or just hungry period!!! Go here portions are more then enough you definitely will get full... Prices are reasonable too I would definitely pick Jackies Diner over Highway Inn anyday!!! At least you'll get your money's worth

Oh how I love me a pastele plate from Jackies! In fact I'm craving one right now! It's a family run diner that offers local Hawaiian and Puerto Rican food. My family and I have been here a handful of times and we are never dissapointed with what we order. The prices are average plate lunch prices and to me worth every penny. The workers are always friendly and thankful for your business. The only "complaint" I do have, minor as it is, is the fact that they only take cash. I have found myself in the area craving their food but had no cash in my wallet and for that reason alone I have opted to eat elsewhere. (Yes, I could go to an ATM at the strip mall but don't like paying a service fee to use my card ). Hopefully they will enter into this century and start accepting credit/debit cards soon!

I've passed by this place a bunch of times since I've moved to Oahu, and I probably would have never thought to eat here if it were not for Yelp. It's a small, unassuming place, with rocking food. Everyone rages about Helena's for Hawaiian, but honestly, I think with the combination of better parking, smaller crowds, and perhaps better food, Jackie's wins in my books. I had the tripe plate, which comes with a bowl of tripe stew, two scoops of rice, one scoop mac salad, and pickled veggies. All this for $9. If you like tripe, you will probably love the stew here. It's a tomato based stew, with chunks of potatoes and carrots. To be honest, there is a slight funk to the tripe, so those that are sensitive to it...perhaps pass on it, or share the dish. I didn't mind it so much. Although the pickled veggies were just a side, they really stood out to me - they were Korean style marinaded veggies - bean sprouts in a sesame marinade (I think), and a quick pickle kimchi. (I say quick pickle because it tasted like kimchi, but the flavors were not as developed or robust as traditional kimchi). I also ordered a pork lau lau. Good to share! I love the aroma and flavoring that the leaves left on the salted pork. Yum. A delicious gut-busting dinner for two for about $20. Awesome.

This place is amazing. I had the pasteles and beef stew with Spanish rice and it was delicious! I was so excited they had pasteles on the menu. My colleagues had the pork and cabbage and steak onions and enjoyed them as well.

The atmosphere was a typical local diner type feel. The service was okay. They brought the food out pretty quick. Wish the food was much more larger for the price I paid. I thought the tripe stew was good overall but the added stuff could be better like the Mac salad, etc

Good local food for a good local price below $10 for most plates. I had the Combination Plate that comes with Lau Lau, Kalua pig, Chicken long rice, Lomi salmon, Haupia and choice of rice or poi. Waitress was friendly and checked on us regularly! The only down to this place is the "CASH ONLY"!

'Twas alright. I went there to try the tripe stew and pasteles. The pasteles were pretty good. The tripe stew was a little too "soupy" for my preferences. I like my stews to be thick not like soup. I was also kinda bummed about the portions. I was expecting a big bowl. Like I said, it's good but not the best.

Jackie's Diner is awesome! I was very lucky to have my coworkers show me this Hawaiian/Puerto Rican, hole in the wall, amazingly priced and delicious diner. I always order the pastele plate. The pasteles here are so good! The plate comes with 1 pastele, 2 scoops of rice, salad, and mac salad. I get a double order of the greens salad to replace the mac. It is such a generous portion of food for only around $9.00! I leave overly stuffed, without cleaning out my wallet. Dr. Andrew has ordered the Chicken Katsu, and also thoroughly enjoyed it. That was even more food, for around the same price, maybe even less. It was 2 pieces of chicken katsu, 2 scoops of rice, kimchi, and veggies. We had plenty of leftovers to bring home. The service here is just as good as the amazing food. The waitress and kitchen staff have always been so friendly! I love supporting their business! I highly recommend Jackie's Diner for both Hawaiian and Puerto Rican food. You won't be disappointed.

CASH ONLY you would think I would have known that since so many people posted it on yelp but..I didn't pay attention... Anyway, my husband and I had a mean craving for Hawaiian food and we decided to try this place out. Apparently my husband ate here when he first arrived in Hawaii and said he really liked it. I'm usually a Helena's only kind of gal but since they were closed (as usual) I felt it was time to branch out. We both ordered the combination plate (for like $11 it's a steal!) It took some time to finally get to our table but when it did...I swear I could hear an ukulele being played by Braddah Iz from heaven. It was FANTASTIC! The Lau Lau was perfectly seasoned and not only did I have a nice piece of fat, but my pork came with a nice bit of fat too which made the leaves EXTRA amazing. The kalua pork was "broke da mout" good. Left me salivating for more. Rice was nicely done (a little on the dry side which I prefer when I eat Hawaiian food since there's so much juice). The lomi was nice and salty but not overpowering, and the chicken long rice.....omg I was having May Day school lunch flashbacks. I INHALED my food, it was just too good to stop eating for a second. My husband also went nuts and annihilated his food. By the time I was done I have to say I was sad that it was over. I immediately told my husband that if I could eat it all over again, I would, right now! The finisher was the haupia which totally washed away the salty/oily taste from your mouth and left you with a sweet goodbye kiss. Service was pretty spot on as well! Our server was attentive and kept bringing us refills which was awesome since we were too busy shoving our pie holes to even say "more water please." A very pleasant experience with a reasonable price point. I'm so happy I came here.

Pastele is awesome over here!!! Most of all, my favorite is the Spanish rice. Friendly staff and bunch of plants.....? Overall I love this place. I would come back over n over :)

Four stars for my first time here. Ordered a Pastele Plate and it come with a Bacalao salad, Spanish rice and mac salad. You have two choices on spice hot or mild, I chose hot. Could be had 5 stars if the Pastele was spicier, their definition of hot would be like mild wing sauce. I added some chili pepper water (comes as a condiment) to liven it up. Bacalao salad was okay, little to no actual Bacalao in it. But overall it was a great meal for 9 bucks. Next time gonna do the Pastele and stew plate. Oh and forgot one thing, the fries were super crunchy=awesome!

We were searching for some authentic Island food after our visit to the USS Arizona memorial. Yelpers gave this place high marks, so we decided to give it a try. We are real Gringo Californians, so we asked a lot of questions. Our waitress was so nice and patient with us. We settled on 3 Hawaiian plates and a Pastele plate. Very generous portions of sumptuous Kalua Pork, rice, and soup were presented to us. I'll have to admit that the Lomi Salmon was just too salty for our tastes. The coconut flavored dessert was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pastele. It was ground up green banana and Taro and meat with olives and beans. She said it was Puerto Rican. The Spanish rice that accompanied it was delic. We all were quite satisfied with the quality of the food and the kindness of the staff. I would highly recommend this little hole-in-the wall!

I never really cared for chicken long rice but needed to grab some for dinner tonight. It was 5pm and since I work on Schofield I didn't have much options except to get it near my moms in Aiea. The first place I called was Heights Drive Inn, sadly they were all sold out. You need to come early for that stuff. Thanks to Yelp I found Jackie's diner, I always seen their sign in Waimalu but never knew what this place served. I was driving while doing this so didn't have the ability to read the reviews or check whether their stuff was good or not, I was desperate and just hoping for the best. When you enter there are booths lined up to your right, the food & cashier is to the left towards the back. The menu board... It is straight ahead of you as you're walking towards the back. You need to tilt your head up to see it otherwise it can be easily missed. The food is stored in metal pans after the register. They scoop up your portions and heat up or fry your order behind that. Which is kinda cool because you can see & smell them cooking your stuff. I ordered ala carte, (2) chicken long rice, & (1) chopped steak with onions. A side order of this is $8.50 & it's about half the size of a typical take out plate. My bill was $21. They packed my food securely in a cut out hot cocoa box and taped it through. The long rice looked like it wasn't much but it was packed in the containers. It was a lot more food than I expected. It was pretty good although I would have been happier had there been more chicken in it. I was just glad it wasn't salty (that is my main concern for my mom and granny's meals these days). The chopped steak was good too, I did think the steak would be fatter but hey what can you expect for the low price... the menu just said it was with onions, but there were some mushrooms in there, big plus. Overall I like this place, pretty much a hole in the wall, however food is good, prices affordable, customer service is great... I will definitely be ordering takeout here again.

Shut it dowwwwwwn! The only thing I frown upon is the fact that its cash only. Could be considered a good thing though bc I know I would order all kinds of dishes if they took card. Pastele plate with Gandule rice, oh my stars!! Not to mention the Hawaiian Food is amazing! The girls are always super nice and fast with service.

I feel like I'm missing something... people seem to rave about this place, but their pasteles are just "okay," perhaps even mediocre, and a bit on the salty side. Maybe I've been spoiled with my mom's home-cooked pasteles and Spanish rice for so long. Their bacalao salad was also pretty "meh"--basically drenched in what tasted like Italian dressing. They get three stars because their servers are so friendly!

It was my first time here. I was impressed with the food. I had the Kalua pig with cabbage and a side order of a mild pastele. My wife and son had the Hawaiian plate. Lau lau , kalua pig and poi with lomi salmon. Funny, my plate came with Kim Chee. The place is a little worn down and so were the menus. Service was a little slow but poor girl was by herself and was working hard. She always had a smile on her face. But the food was good. I will go back there.

Can I give a place 5 stars for having only eaten one item and for not ever actually stepping foot into the place? Helllz yeah! It's all about the pasteles (pateles as often pronounced in HI). Oh man It's freaking Ono!! Thanks to my extended ohana in HI, anytime someone travels out to the mainland I ask them to bring 3 things and one of them is pasteles from Jackie's!!! The pasteles they make here are the puerto rican version yelp.com/biz_photos/Qfmt… . The easiest way to explain it is that It's like tamales. Except instead of using corn base masa, in pasteles the masa is made with green banana, green plantain, taro, and calabazas (tropical pumpkins). The filling's are often seasoned pork shoulder, olives, and sometimes the pork can be replaced with pork butt or chicken. It's then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. As with mexican tamales its a labor of luv and often family members join in and make 100's during the holiday season. yelp.com/biz_photos/Qfmt… Jackie's serves a mild and spicy version which I've had both. The spicy is my choice and it's actually not very spicy but has a nice kick. The masa is moist and has great seasoning as does the filling. I can eat these every day! If I had to choose between tamales and pasteles I would definitely have to say pasteles. It's definitely onolicious kau kau that travels well to the mainland yummy goodness!!.

Love this place. My go to spot in pearl city. The food is delicious, tripe stew is my favorite, and the girls that work there are so friendly. I also noticed that every time I go they always ask how the food was when I pay my bill. I can tell they honestly take pride in what they are doing and the quality reflects this. Not too many places like Jackies left.

  • Taz M.

Long time fan of jackies diner. The Hawaiian plate and pastele are always spot on. Although today the tripe stew was salty. It was the first time it was overboard salty. But the beef stew plate is always a favorite of my daughters.

The food was great and the service was awesome. They were extremely friendly. I'm only giving them 4 stars because it's CASH ONLY and even though their menu is a decent size, it's really only hawaiian food with the exception of burgers.

My first and last time dining here. I craved for outstanding pastele. Ordered spicy pastele plate with gandule rice, bacalao salad, and macaroni salad. I saw some red seasonings in the dish; however, pastele tasted mild. Gandule rice tasted bland and did not "wow" me. Bacalao salad was drenched in dressing and masked the taste of veggies and seasonings. Macaroni salad was by far the worst, one bite of it and I only tasted mayo and macaroni. On top of that, customer service was not up to par. Waitress seated us and took our order; however, she did not stop by during our meal to ask us, "How does your food taste?", "Would you like a refill on your water and diet soda?", "Is there anything else you would like to order?" Waitress stopped over once to place our tab on the table. I asked my husband,"How was your meal?" He responded, "Chicken katsu tasted oily." Unhappy and dissatisfied customers = We are not spending our money and time at this eatery.

I always have to stop here when I visit home!! The combo plate has everything I'm looking for!! This time around the lomi salmon was pretty salty but everything else is as good as usual!! This is one of my favorite places for 'ono kine grindz. I rate it a 4.5 stars for excellent FRIENDLY customer service and 'ono loa food. It's one of the places on O'ahu where I LOVE to eat. They greet you and are top notch when it comes to customer service. In fact I drive all the way from the East Si' all the way to Waimalu just to eat here. They are that good. I love their tripe stew with poi, lomi salmon, kalua pig, and laulau. Their haupia is good too. I uploaded photo #33 so check it out. Know that they accept cash only before you head there. I will be back again... and again... and again. I highly suggest :)

This place is really good and the service is always friendly! Portions are good sized and it tastes delicious. The prices are alright. And it's cash only, I believe. And apparently they can't substitute something for another. But I guess that's really up to them. Other than that, this place is good!

I am spoiled because I have access to fresh home made pasteles. When I run out, I go to Jackie's since they are the closets to authentic puerto rican food. I love this place! The hawaiian food is my favorite! The owner/manager is so sweet, she always talks story with us every time we see her, our server is always the same girl each time we visit and she's a total sweetheart, busy day or not she always has the greatest attitude and is always smiling! Love it, great service and food!

So local kine! Brah, if you donno da kine local foods, den dis iz one place you like try. Located in Aiea on Kam Hwy in a ghetto-ish strip mall. - Yes, it is a bit sketchy. Parking is in its own lot, but during peak hours, it is a pain to try and get a stall! Even if you're getting take out! I must admit, just last month was my only time I have ever ate here. The moment I opened the menu, I knew what I wanted. The patele with the gondule rice and a side of tripe stew. It was ono! This is now my go-to place for local food!

I love the Hawaiian plate here! It makes my mouth water! I get the Hawaiian Plate that comes with Kalua pig, lau lau, chicken long rice, lomi salmon, choice of poi or rice and haupia. They have smaller versions too if you only want Kalua pig or lau lau. Make sure you ask for their chili pepper water, omg that tastes soooo good! The service here is always quick and friendly so I love coming here for a quick meal. The poi is also always fresh too, the lau lau is very moist and I love the chicken long rice...comes in a bowl and with lots of gravy that tastes like chicken noodle soup. yum!!

I last came here in August while I was visiting Oahu for the summer. The people I was with had been away from Hawaii for awhile and wanted to eat Hawaiian food around this area and since there isn't much Hawaiian places around Aiea... the first thing came to mind was Jackies. It was actually my birthday the night I ate here, I actually had my birthday dinner here... that's too funny... But it's all good. I'm a huge fan of their ribs! No veggies, all rice. That's the only thing I order when I come to Jackies! I came here twice in August and often ate here since 2006. If your in the area and craving ribs... stop by Jackie's! Shared parking lot. Parking is free. Super casual diner. Indoor seating only. By far, one of my favorite places on the island to get my ribs on.

For good Hawaiian food, portion and price this place has it all! You actually leave this place satisfied. Lots of parking here, when it's not around lunch time, cuz its shared with alot of other eating places. Service was fast and friendly. I only wanted a kalua pig plate but none was offered. They had the combo kalua pig and laulau but I didn't want the laulau. The waitress suggested just getting double kalua and dropping the laulau. So thats what I did. Their haupia is the real deal too, not like other places where it's like coconut jello. This one the texture is more like pudding. Very good!

Came here with the boyfriend and his familia for dinner. This place is kind of run down but there are several booths to sit at. The window says Hawaiian and Puerto Rican food, but they also have chicken katsu, grilled cheese sandwich, and loco mocos. The Hawaiian food was the basic with Kalua Pig, Lau Lau, Poi, Lomi Lomi, no Luau or Poke. I had the Hawaiian Plate wich comes with two choices which I chose the Kalua Pig and Lau Lau. Came with rice, lomi salmon, and haupia. It was okay.... The Meat in the Lau lau was extremely lean and salty not enough fat in there. The lomi salmon was extremely salty too. The Kalua pig was pretty good because it wasn't dry. My bf got the Chicken Katsu that came with Kim Chee and Bean Sprout. He claims it was the best Chicken Katsu he has ever had.... The texture wasn't too crunchy and it the color of it was just right. The sauce seemed just store bought, but he loved it. I thought it was really cool that the workers were all ages and all different ethnicities. Oh yah, Cash only!

If you like to eat a LOT of local food for cheap, then this is your place. You can get a Hawaiian plate or a pastele plate OR you can get a combo and add either beef or tripe stew to either of those. Just todd your mac salad into the stew and you are good-to-go.

Love this place because it's really affordable and the food is really good. Great portions. Service is awesome. Very Clean. If you haven't tried this place you really should try it at least once.. I usually get the Hawaiian Plate or Pastele. WINNAH WINNAH...

We visited Jackie's a couple weeks ago after a few years. My husband ordered the Pastele plate, my son ordered the Hawaiian plate and they enjoyed it. Prior to ordering, the waitress suggested the Chopped Steak which I ordered. It was really good! Only down side is they serve Pepsi over Coke...ugh! Chopped Steak would have been awesome with COKE...lol. The other thing is it's CASH only. I had to run out to the ATM...good thing they have one right out the door.

Jackie's diner is the best. The family has been going to this restaurant since it opened. I Don't know why I have never written a review before. I guess I was too busy enjoying the food. Last night I had the pastele and tripe stew plate with gandule rice. The pasteles are good sized, have decent filling, and seasoned perfectly. The tripe stew has a good amount of tripe, and very good flavoring. The "spanish" rice tasted good, but could use a bit more pigeon peas, and ham shank. I was a bit disappointed with our waitress. Although she was very friendly, she was dressed in a tank top and shorts, and even dropped our menus on the floor, picked it up and gave it to us. I understand this is a very casual, family restaurant, but there should be some sort of professional/sanitation/HACCP standards. The prices are very decent, and portions suitable. Parking at dinner time can be a hassle, so be prepared to circle the lot many times. When craving Hawaiian/Puerto Rican food check out Jackie's diners.

My favorite place to eat Hawaiian food! Friendly staff and awesome food! They usually get really busy at night. So go have an early dinner. They only accept cash, but don't worry, there's a bank machine right outside. :) I been coming here for years and each time I eat here I pig out because its just that great! I usually order the Hawaiian plate with kalua pig and chicken long rice. It comes with lomi salmon, haupia, and choice of rice or poi. Yeah, I get poi AND a side order rice. lol. AND I order a mild pastele. Their food is so good! I love their pasteles. Its the best I ever had! Their portions is perfect. Not enough to stuff you to the gills, but enough for you to be content. Which is good!

First time trying this place and let me say. The stew was very good and also ordered the pastele on the side. Service was alright and the place was very busy for a weekday. You have to try the Puerto Rican stew. I think this is the best beef stew I ever had on the island besides moms. Would be back again for sure.

I read a review on The Tasty Island blog about the pasteles here, so today, I got the chance to go! Thanks Bri for paying for me! Pasteles here are ono!!!!! Not as much pork as I would've liked but not so little that I can complain. Good flavor to it. Yum factor is 9 out of 10. If they'd filled it with more pork, I'd give it a 9.5! The plate only comes with one pastele, so I was a bit disappointed about that since the plate is $9. They give a good amount of spanish rice and salad though. Next time, instead of paying $9 for the plate, I'll get them ala carte at $3 each. I was surprised that they have pretty affordable Hawaiian plates here too! I love Hawaiian food! So, I asked my gf to get it hahaa, cuz I wanted pastele and hawaiian food. She was nice enough to oblige. Verdict 7 out of 10. I wasn't expecting much since I'd never heard of this place. Bri got the combo plate which had Lau Lau, Kalua Pig, Chicken Long Rice, Large Poi (+ $1.25), Lomi Salmon and Haupia. Total cost: $10.35 + $1.25 = $11.55 + tax okei deal. Breakdown Kalua Pig - surprisingly flavorful though I didn't care for the tiny shreds. They do give a sizeable amount so I was happy. 8/10 Lau Lau - meh, like the kine you get frozen, but hey, ain't that bad considering the cost! Lotta fat chunks in it I pulled out (cuz I'm tryyyyying to be healthier) but decent amount of meat and leaves. not too salty 6.5/10 Chicken Long Rice - no ginger flavor. not enough chicken. grrr. the taste is okei. 6/10 Lomi Salmon - Bri's mom wanted this so I didn't get to try it. Good portion though, comes in a separate little cup container! 8/10 cuz size does matter! Haupia - regular jello kine but hey, it's haupia! nice size too. 7/10 Poi - I'd hate to see the regular size poi cuz the large size looks more like the regular size. It was watered too much for my liking - not unbearably so or enough to make me angry but I'd just prefer thicker. 6/10 There's a Leonards Express here too! Dayum! Got me some custard malasadas too. chee hoo! Location: In the little strip mall area across the street from Besty Buy in Pearl City. I'm relieved that if I want decent Hawaiian food, I don't have to make the journey into Town. I'll probably be back more for the pasteles though!

  • David T.

One of the better places for good Hawaiian and Puerto Rican food, I always come for their awesome Pastele Plate. Their hawaiian food is excellent, definitely underrated compared to the more popular places in town that all the tourists go to. I will frequently come here when I'm craving Hawaiian food. What sets them apart is their fantastic Puerto Rican food, I love their pasteles and gandule rice. The pasteles are always good, never too mushy and always with a good amount of pork and filling. Their gandule rice is also great, not sticky or mushy, and well seasoned (it's not just 'orange' rice like some places). Their mac salad is pretty standard, good stuff. Overall, it's a great local Hawaiian/Puerto Rican restaurant, you can dine in or take out, and they're cheap too (no tourist gouging prices!).

We often pass Jackie's Diner on Kam Hwy. whenever we're out and about and even though we live in the area we rarely ever venture over into this strip mall. We decided to give Jackie's a try because of some positive reviews it received here. It was a little interesting to find out that this restaurant served Hawaiian and Puerto Rican food. What an unlikely combo. Meeting the little Asian mama at the end of our visit kinda threw a twist into it too. I was very surprised to find out that a Hawaiian Combo (laulau, kalua pig, and chicken long rice) cost only a little more than $10 and this includes rice or poi, lomi salmon, and haupia. I consider it a bargain because most other eating places charge at least $5 more. The quality of the food, in my opinion is excellent. Always filling and hits the spot. To me it's not as good as other places but for $10 and some change, it's pretty darn good. It's very rare to only spend a little over $20 for Hawaiian food and leave stuffed, ready to go to bed. I need to add that a recent visit did leave me a little disappointed because the kalua pig was a little bland. It need just a little more more smoke and salt...and this is why it's just short of 5 stars. Service is efficient, quick, and friendly. Just make sure you got the cash.

Good side: the combo plate was Ono, the pork laulau was tender and delicious, chicken long rice yummy, kalua pig lean and smoky not too fatty or salty and haupia smooth and coconutty. Not so good: salted meat luau was not coconutty as expected, in fact there was no coconut that we could taste and the meat was tasty but hard. Chicken laulau was ok. Lomi salmon didn't have much salmon, but Very generous on the tomatoe. Overall, this is a good place to come for good priced Hawaiian food, but wouldn't say best on island like some of the other reviews.

been going to this place for many, many years. went there last night, everybody ordered the chop steak and haupia. writing about it makes me happy! I order a tray of the haupia for work potlucks, tell everyone I made it myself but promised my mom not to share the recipe!! (note: they need 2 days advance notice for that much haupia, so don't promise the co-workers you'll bring it tomorrow), oh yeah and cash only!

Here's a place where you can stop to have a meal right from the beach, shopping, hiking, or just about anywhere else. No-frills; no need to dress up...just come-as-you-are. The food quality is always consistent. Their kalua pig is never dry or too salty. Always in the "just right zone". Portions are generous, so go hungry, especially if you're planning to get the Hawaiian Combo. My personal favorite is their tripe stew. The strips of tripe is cooked just right, without the aftertaste. There aren't too many places that serves up tripe stew as good as this! Honestly, I was never a fan of tripe until I tried Jackie's. Since then, I've tried tripe stew all over the island, but so far, none were as good. What makes their stew stand out is the veggies. They're cooked to a point where they're almost melting! If you like tripe stew, you'll love Jackie's. If you've never tried it before, I recommend you try it here first. You won't be disappointed!

The hubby and I were craving pasteles one day. So we yelped it and found Jackie's and decided to give it a try. First of all, let me just say that the pastele plate was super 'ono. However, the pastele by itself was just ok. Confused? Let me break it down... First bite into the pastele, it was allllllll masa, no meat! I have to say a whole inch on both ends of the pastele are lacking in meat. But once you reach the meat, it gets a lot better! Half way through though it got kinda salty for my taste. So all in all, an alright pastele, not the best. BUT when you add in all the other elements of the plate, it's a winnah! The rice is amazing, little bits of meat and beans add an extra oomf to the taste. Somehow, the mac salad perfectly matches the pastele. I usually don't care or mention mac salads in the review but it really surprised me how well the two went together. Then there was the salad, super good mix with tomatoes, onions and salted fish. I couldn't finish the entire plate so I had a second meal to take home. So if you're looking for an overall amazing meal, try the pastele plate. But if you're looking for the best pastele you ever had, this isn't the place...but it does satisfy the craving. I'm still on the hunt to find the best pastele on the isle but I definitely found the best overall puerto rican fare! I definitely will be back sooner than later. I can't believe of all my years living in the aiea/pearl city area that I've never tried this place. Will have to make up for lost time!

First of all, service was excellent, friendly and helpful. Secondly, food was onolicious; portions were good. I ordered the Hawaiian Plate which consisted of kalua pork, laulau, lomilomi salmon, haupia and poi, plus a side of rice. As a first-time patron, I was very impressed. I will definitely return to this restaurant.
