Folks, I think one just shouldn't expect soooo much from a plate lunch place to begin with. I mean, are you hoping for first-class service and Five Diamond Pacific Rim cuisine or something? Before you do, look around...this eatery is in a freaking strip mall among other casual establishments, so PUH-LEEEEZE...give it a rest! This is our little go-to place whenever we want a quick, hot, not necessarily healthy, local food. There's almost always a place to sit inside. There's always a lot of parking...nice to not have to fight for a place to park for a change! And when you pau eat, you can run your errands at the Safeway across the way or get your caffeine fix a few stores down. My fave plates here are the teri beef and the meat jun/barbecue beef combo. I love the way the food always come out steaming hot here! I'm not scraping around the inside of my styrofoam container looking for more food either. The portions are pretty decent and I always have leftovers. And the prices, I think, is pretty comparable with other plate lunch places. Oh yeah, one more thing...it's down the street from another plate lunch place, so it's not like you're "stuck" having to eat their food.

With all the negative reviews, I felt like I went to a different place. I ordered the Hawaiian plate at 3:00PM. About 2 minutes after I ordered, out came 2 scoops of rice, lau lau without a ti leaf wrapping and mac salad. The scoops of rice were small. It was as if they wanted to make sure they didn't want to give me a grain more than fit in the scoops. Most places fill those scoops so they look like huge icecream scoops. These looked more like pool ball cut in half. All that being said, the rice was cooked perfectly. No dry grains or grains split open. Too many plate lunch places use the cheapest rice and overcook it. Not here. The lau lau was fine. I loved that they took the ti leaf off. It saved me the trouble. It was probably Keoki's lau lau like most of the plate lunch places on Oahu. Tasted good and was moist and warm. Now the best part was the mac salad. I'm not a local boy and generally don't like mac salad because it is warm and bland. This was cold, had lots of black pepper, and just enough mayo to cover the maccaroni. The macaroni was still overcooked like every other plate lunch place in Hawaii. I'd take this over L&L but not over Yummy. Not great but not as bad as the other reviews make it out to be.

Wanted to try this old spot I came to as a kid, but now I wish I didn't. The people barely speak English & prices ain't worth the quality. The Teri beef was dry and no flavor, garlic chicken took 20+ minutes and was oily with no flavor as well. The green river was too sugary too! This will be my last time eating here, until it changes. Sad to see an old local establishment go to waste!

Friendly customer service, good food. The inside is a little run down but it's expected since this place has been around for such a long time.

This isn't about the food as I have been an occasional patron here. It's about having to use the restroom but only if I pay $10 minimum with my card since I have no cash. Even after I plead with a please? It's not like I'm homeless and using it for hygiene purposes. Did I mention that I have been a customer here before? Smh. Greedy.

If you visit here with the right expectations, you'll leave with a good taste in your mouth. After visiting Office Depot across the lot, my boyfriend and I decided to get a quick dinner at Diner's. I've never eaten here before so when I asked him what type of food they served he compared it to Grace's or Loco Moco, I figure okay another platelunch place. Besides, it was hot that day and he confirmed there was air condition. The cashier was very friendly and I decided to try the garlic chicken plate with brown rice, banana lumpia, and my boyfriend got a grilled cheese and longanisa breakfast with two over easy eggs and brown rice. The banana lumpia was made with apple banana and didn't have any sweetness to it at all. I know everyone makes their lumpia different, but it could've been better. The garlic chicken came with a lot of vegetables but it was more like a mochiko chicken instead of garlic chicken with no substantial garlic taste. My boyfriend's food didn't have any complaints there. Probably the best thing I would have to say is their mac/potato salad, it was served cold (I hate warm mac salad!) even though the rest of my food was hot and it was probably the best seasoned thing on my plate. I think what I adore about this place is the fact it's still old school, they have the fridge with drinks from Hershey's chocolate milk boxes to Yoohoo to Diamond Head sodas and a freezer filled with ice cream. It would be cool if they closed one day just to do some cleaning, the air conditioner vents were disgusting.

Love the bbq pork chops but the customer service is super crappy. Put in a phone order 20mins ago jus to pick it up and be told sorry they didn't cook it yet. At least the cashier have me my Arizona green tea for free. #LateDinner=PissedOffWife

Tried this place on my coworkers insistence. She's a big fan of their lasagna w/garlic bread. In addition, this place carries Green River, which is another reason why my coworker enjoys this place. I tried their Bento #3 that contains: Spam, Chicken Katsu, Fish and Teri Beef and a piece of ume, all for under $9 w/tax. The teri beef and fried fish were good, their teri beef had the right amount of sauce and wasn't chewy. The chicken katsu and spam were okay. I think the katsu would have been better if it wasn't for their katsu sauce, it had a strange taste to it. Also, I wasn't a big fan of their tartar sauce. FYI, minimum credit card charge is $10. Overall 3.5 stars.

So disappointed. Quality suffers to make more money! The fried rice with two eggs and meat now only has one egg! And it went up a dollar! Ridiculous. How are you going to charge people 10 cents because they don't want Ice in their green river!!!! How?! Never coming again.

Diner's has a really good island breakfast plate. On Sundays there's usually a good crowd of people but it's worth the wait. However, I ventured into the lunch menu and order a Loco Moco - no bueno! I don't know if I set my expectations too high relative to the breakfast, but it was just all wrong. Also, the cashier may try to over-charge you. Check your receipts and make sure they match the prices listed.

Located in the Waimalu Shopping Plaza on Kaahumanu Street. Dont get this place confused with the Waimalu Shopping Center on Kam Highway. =) Diners has been around since I was little kid. Its changed owners since then with the Anna being the new owner. Alot has since changed....including the menu and decor. Recently it went through some changes to include new wall art, additional tables and now nathan's hot dogs. Im actually a fan of their shoyu chicken which always sells out. Its 3 peices of chicken with 2 scoops rice and a scoop of mac salad (toss for the heathy people) If you are in a hurry for lunch, Diners is one of a few places there days that has pre-made food already to serve and go. If you opt for a pre-made hot food, you can be in and out within a matter of 10 minutes. Like many other places, the price of a plate lunch has gone up but Diners does give you large portions. You can always go with a mini and that will satisfy the hunger until dinner time. If your there in the morning, you can try the Island Breakfast, which comes with rice, choice of meat and eggs. This is one of the cheaper items on the menu and taste great. I love Luncheon meat and they serve it here. This is a hit or miss kind of place for some people. I like it but I know some that dont.

Asked about the french fries...is it crinkle or regular and we got "dear in yhe head light look". Seriously not a hard question! Food was okay..nothing to rave about! The hired help needs to get a grip!

So, I was ordering a regular plate, and my total came out to about 8 dollars. I then realized I had no cash and they only do card charges if it's 10 dollars and over. So I asked her to add a drink, and my total came out to 9 dollars and like, 90 cents. Despite the fact I was only a dime away from 10 dollars, she still didn't accept my card. I told her to just add 10 cents for nothing and I'll pay it but she said no. So I had to wait for my dad. Not to mention she was being rude when I was trying to order. I kept having to repeat myself cause she was talking story to the person in the kitchen. Then the chicken Katsu I got was a fat slab of greasy chicken that wasn't even cut all the way! Sorry bout it, diners. But first impressions matter.

The special we had was a big joke. We tried the chicken patty plate special and boy was it special. They had one piece of chicken fried patty(half burnt), 2 small scopes rice and one scoop mac salad all for $7.95.

Love love their teriyaki meatballs! They run out really fast, its on their special of the day menu so if you'd like to try it don't go too late :)

This is the place to go if you're wanting below average food. The locomoco's patty is so thin you barely can taste it. Best to just order a super saimin...that's probably the best thing on the menu. Roast beef plate was junk . The beef was thin and dry. Never tried the food already made on the side of the counter, but every time I see it it looks suuuper dry. Prices are not worth what you get.

I tried this place twice and I was not happy both times. My food was not at all good and mushy. I will not be coming back to this place again.

A simple island breakfast $6.95 (2 scoops rice, 2 eggs, bacons) with coffee($1.95) costs me $9.26. Damn this expensive breakfast for me. Not worth it. For a simple breakfast I expect to pay no more than $7 with coffee too. So disappointed. I hope this place out of business soon. And replace with cheaper meals for locals.

I would give this place no stars if it were and option. The service was fast and I got my Loco Moco in less than 5 minutes. I should've took that as a bad sign already. When I went to eat my food I noticed the patties were pre-maid and were super tough to cut through. They gave me a little splash of gravy. What's a loco Moco without the gravy ?! Never eating there again.

I don't know how this place is still in business, seriously. Island plate breakfast about $7...u get a container that feels like nothing is in it, then you open it and realize it's partially true. Small egg, small frozen hash brown and a meat choice. This should be no more than $3.99 in my opinion . I think that with the opening of pancakes and waffles just a few doors down, Diners will have to step up their quality and quantity.

My son just ordered a saimin to go, there was a piece of wire tangled up in his noodle. I will be calling and speaking to the manager!!

Decided to try here again after several years. Disappointed to be charged for a tiny water cup. My friend ordered a mini garlic chicken for over $8. Had a mixed garlic chicken and chicken katsu. Portions were on the smaller side. Taste was OK. Grace's inn down the street is a much better deal!

To call this place a dive is putting it nicely. The food is mediocre but if you're hungry, it'll work. U probably won't return when there are so many better options around.

Since it's right down the street it's been one of our goto places for a quick meal. The spam musubi is good but how can you mess that up? They make it to order which is the way to go. Otherwise it's just ok food.

I got the bbq chkn as usual. It was not good, but ive eaten worse so it'll get two stars. service was ok, and the prices were normal, so i may go back if im in the area...

SUPER disappointed with Diner's. My girlfriend and I were craving a quick breakfast and Diner's was the closest...and we thought we'd try something new. Never again! :( My issue is that for the price and atmosphere, the quality and quantity of food was not up to par. There was nothing special about our breakfast plates (omelette and longanisa plates): it wasn't seasoned great, small portions, and I could've done better myself. Don't waste your money here...we would've been more satisfied with McDonalds.

BOOOOOOOO! BOO THIS ESTABLISHMENT! For $6.95 I got two oily, unseasoned eggs, 4 skinny pieces of bacon and an effing premade hashbrown patty. My kids' pancakes were kinda slimy in the middle. My husband's fried rice had big chucks of unfried rice in it. So lame. Eff in the place in the A. They charge for water cups, too. We should've just went to MacDoh's.

Haven't been to a Diners since the were on Keeamoku, back in the day they were everywhere, had the chicken katsu and a BBQ burger, both were just okay, can't say I would recommend this place for lunch.

Good place to find phillipino food. Other than the location though, I wouldn't go out of the way to go here.

I honestly don't think that Diners has changed much at all. It's hard to miss it even from the road because the word "DINERS" is in huge letters lol. It tends to get crowded, especially around lunch time. I'm a huge fan of everything I've tried, and I try to get something different every time. They did raise their prices I noticed, but then again everyone is raising prices. They give pretty good sized portions, too. The staff is always really friendly, and if you're a regular they remember what you like to get. I haven't hit that status yet, but I'm sure gonna try. I recommend their loco moco :)

I love diners, not only because its just down the road but with the wide selection of delicious foods there's always something for me. I love their hamburgers, just the dressing is great for me. I always try to get a mini teriyaki meatballs but good luck, its usually sold out by dinner. Their meat jun is great, it has a light egg batter thats sweet and the dipping sauce compliments it perfectly. Great pricing, large indoor with the perfect amount of seating, minimal seating outdoors, bathroom for customers only and always parking!

I think there Braised Oxtail stew is to die for. The pieces were hocky puck size and super soft. The stew sauce is perfectly orange and not salty. I am a oxtail fan and no where else who makes oxtail stew (not soup) can match Diners. One thing I wish though is if they could add potatoes in it.

I used to come to this place often as a kid and now that I'm back on vacation it was a quick stop on the way back to my parent's. I really can't remember what was good here so I opted for the regular sized Chicken Adobo plate lunch. It was a great first meal right off the plane and the chicken was wonderfully flavored. Just a tiny bit dry though but still damn good. The mac salad and rice are standard issue. Just like every other plate lunch place in Hawaii.

As a Returning Kama'aina, I wanted to go to all the places where I ate when I was younger, and this place was one of them. Many people told me that this place was no longer in business...Well, I found it!!!! I don't know if this is the only location on the Island, but I Love This Place!!! Always loved the Hamburger Special, but the Other food is just as good! Yum-Yum-Yum!!!! =)

There cheeseburgers are really good and so is there pastrami sandwiches.

Not the same as I remember. I ordered the beef stew and was kind of watery. Kind of dirty in there and homeless people walking in and out asking for water and key's to the bathroom. Also, their trash cans are all exposed. Grace's is much better. Actually 2 stars but I give them 3 cause they have coke. Don't think I'll go back....even to get a soda.

    (2)
  • Denise Y.

I ordered their hamburger steak. Their hamburger patties were definitely cheap frozen patties, like the kind that McDonalds serves. I was very disappointed. However, I gave them another chance and went back and ordered their fried saimin. This was even worst. It was 70% cabbage/luncheon meat and 30% noodles. It was tasteless and just disgusting.

As a teenager in the days, Diners was known for Pork Cutlet w/gravy all over ,and Chicken Katsu w/extra sauce. However times change and portions change. Not like before not the same price or portion. Taste missing that loving care.
