We arrived on a Monday morning to a fairly empty restaurant and a missing staff. After standing around for 10 minutes, we found menus and seated ourselves outside. When a waitress showed up to serve another table, we flagged her down and asked to be waited on. Not the best first impression. She seemed to be the only waitress on staff, so the service was pretty slow. But the food was decent, the prices were cheap, and the parrot was talking to us, so it wasn't the worst dining experience.

My friend visited with his family. He returned moments later to find an unexposed packet of $2500 gone. The management responded by calling his wife a $unt. Enough said.

Sampled their new entree a couple of weeks back. It is the osso bucco which they serve in sections with bone in the center (see pic). It is one of my favorites and very hard to find now. Althea's version is really good. And it was easy to get the marrow spooning it out with the knife.. Not too long after I went again with my wife and her friend, again a great experience. They had a grouper and the half duck. I ordered the prime rib which was featured on the black board. They were already out of the osso bucco. Again everything was great. That prime rib is restaurant grade prime, better than most restaurants which now serve choice. They extended the early bird specials to all evening so the prices were extra good. Because they ran out of the amber bock beer and could not give me a second glass, they comp'd me the first glass, a very nice gesture. As we were leaving, I saw the proprietor standing up and eating prime rib. He joked it was a diet portion. Outside the door, we managed to coax Max the parrot to say goodbye. The SW Florida restaurant scene is fiercely competitive with so many good places. Althea has been around a long long time for good reasons. They are consistently good with a large menu and great attitude. Always worth a visit!

A favorite with the "Happy Hour" crowd for a good reason - 2 for 1 drinks and reasonable prices for "well drinks" ( not so good for name brands), and reasonable food prices. We had the Lobster Rolls. They were pretty good if you like that kind of thing? Very popular with the North East crowd. Pretty strange for the rest of the world. Why ruin a good lobster with Mayonnaise, celery, and a bun? Breakfast here is the best in Venice.

Had breakfast there this morning. My husband had the works and I had French toast. It was way too greasy for us. They were busy and friendly and accommodating, but wouldn't return

I ate here for the first time tonight with my husband and daughter. We are on vacation and decided to try here for dinner based on the positive reviews on Yelp. It was disappointing, overall. The vodka tonics were undrinkable. They tasted like some sort of cleaner that wasn't well rinsed. The three of us shared a garden salad, which was okay/average, shrimp cocktail (small and tasteless shrimp) and the crab cakes appetizer which was average. I did not try my daughter's Fettuccine Alfredo, but she did not eat much of it and said it wasn't very good. The main positive of this restaurant is that they were exceptionally friendly. They even said they could half anything on the menu if nothing was found in the small "kids meal" section. Perhaps breakfast is better as advised in some reviews here?

We were told we could not eat outside because we had a dog. She said they do not have a permit for that. In no state that I know of does one need a permit to have a dog on a public sidewalk. Snotty B@$#ch seemed to enjoy turning us away.

This food is excellent. My wife ordered the Chicken Cordon Blu, definitely worthy of 5 stars! One of the best I've ever had and HUGE. Big enough to split! I had the Chicken Parm which was very good. (Also big enough to split). The staff is very nice and the food came out quickly! I highly recommend this place!

Very very good breakfast and friendly staff. Accommodated us and our triplets (in strollers!) and the food was the best. Highly recommend

Always gone for breakfast but had lunch this time. Grilled chicken pesto sandwich on Foccacia bread was fantastic! Prices are more than reasonable especially during "season" when locals are used to being gouged and portions are great!

Had dinner there last night. Should know better. Their breakfast is usually good, but I was there for dinner. Had fish tacos which were not great, not poor, but barely edible.. The other diners in my group said their meal was passable but not very good. Would love to go and have a great meal there, but I will only go for breakfast in the future.

Great meal, attentive service! No problem in dealing with food allergies/tolerances. Very enjoyable. Thanks! Great meals!

Surprised by the high ratings. Ordered the portobello Benedict and the English muffin was microwaved, the spinach was sandy so not properly cleaned and the home fries were cold and tasteless. Asked if we could sit outside with our dog and told dogs aren't allowed at outdoor cafés in Venice. Not true, apparently just the policy at this place. Bathrooms not clean. Lots of better choices in Venice with friendly staff and well prepared food.

Althea's is probably my favorite place to eat in Venice. French onion soup is some of the best I have ever had. Atmosphere is perfect and the staff makes you feel like part of the family. I look forward to going Althea's every time I am in town.

Cute place for breakfast and one that comes highly recommended. They serve breakfast till 11. The weather was perfect for sitting outside under the shade. Coffee was okay; a little overpriced and kind of mediocre. I had the Veggie Benedict; although not a vegetarian, I love me some avocado, so when I saw the familiar eggs benny with peppers, onions, tomatoes, and avocado, I immediately opted for that. My parents ordered the coconut flake french toast and the plate-sized pancakes with banana and walnut. We're big into splitting meals, and that was what we should've done; two dishes would've been perfect, as the pancakes and french toast were huge portions! Friendly service and great atmosphere. Haven't dined out for breakfast elsewhere in Venice yet, so for now, this is a favorite!

This is my go to place when I'm in Venice. You absolutely cannot beat their breakfast variety, and everything we have ever had there has been extraordinary. Generous portions and good value! Got a love it

Very unpleasant dining experience, started at the front desk with receptionist, was with lady with walker, she seated us in the most akward for disabled lady in middle of bar where we could hardly move around when there were other tables around. Waitress took order, mixed up my order brought sweet potatoe instead of baked potatoe that I order, told her she brought one brown, dried up and old, showed her, stated did not noticed, brought another same. Vegetables overcooked on plate with cod fish that was less then desireable, presentation was poor. No one on the staff, manager or anyone ever came to see how things were, like most restaurant in this area. They need a expediter in the kitchen to check plates and food before being offered to the customers. Upon leaving no acknowledgment, no good night, thanks for coming. Very disappointing experience, local resident of Venice and have many family, friends visiting during the year. Althea,s is crossed off my list. I also ask the waitress why she would serve food like this and she said I do not intend to do this for the rest of my life, and said sorry.

I previously reviewed Althea's for breckfast and it was 5 stars and great...we had dinner there this evening and were more than disappointed. My wife ordered a rum punch as they advertised a full bar. It was undrinkable and sent back with an inquiry if they had a bartender? The reply was "yes, they got the drink right out of the BOOK" enough said. The food was very average, scallops were a bit over cooked the rest needs no mention. I would still go back for breckfast but skip dinner.

Great dinner menu with a huge selection of dishes. The duck dinner is a real standout, with a full half duck, complemented by a great sauce! The outdoor seating is a real plus and the staff is very helpful and courteous. Just off of Venice Ave...definitely worth checking out!

Walked in here on a Sunday night and opted to sit outside in the beautiful weather. We had the crab cakes for an appetizer, they had a very interesting flavor, I can't quite put my finger on what the spice was, but they tasted so fresh and were very good, I would get them again. I wasn't feeling too great so got the chicken caesar salad, which is a little less exciting than what I usually like to try for an entree when out, but I was not disappointed. It was a great sized portion and it tasted like they had just grilled the chicken and made the dressing. He got fish and chips, and they were so good! The fish was perfectly fried, and the french fries nicely spiced, both very crunchy and not at all greasy. Everything, including the drinks, was reasonably priced. We chatted with the owner's brother, who was very helpful and gave us some tips on where to go in the area, he was very friendly and attentive, as was the waitress. I love finding local restaurants with fresh food and good service like this, and we will be back the next time we're in Venice. Added bonus--there's a funny parrot named Max that sits in front of the store next door, and he will imitate you and say "bye bye" when you leave--very funny and cute!

I gave this two stars because my wife really enjoyed her cheese omelet with home fries and bacon. My pancakes and sausage patties, however, were barely edible. I ordered the cakes with walnuts thinking they would be a nice crunch with the cakiness of the cakes. What I got was a huge pile of nuts held together by a dry, crumbly pancake. Even half a bottle of syrup couldn't get them down. My patties were two quarter inch thick rounds of solid crusty char. Like trying to eat the soles of your shoes, it can be done but why bother. Two totally different dining experiences on opposite sides of the table takes a four star rate to a two.

Had a group dinner/meeting here. Very polite staff. If you like seafood, the menu is amazing. The restaurant has a mom and pop feel. 2 for 1 happy hour was pretty sweet too. I chose to go with the red snapper. It was great. I'm thinking of coming back for lunch tomorrow. Prices good too.

Althea's is one of our favorites every time we are in Venice. Consistently great food and good service. Have the chicken anthony usually on special and sit outside and enjoy one of the most lovely spots in Venice!

Order the blueberry & cream cheese stuffed French toast for breakfast. Don't wear a white shirt! Or tuck your napkin under your chin to save the shirt. Delicious! Over all, all entrees are great any time of the day. Pot Roast is a local favorite there as well as there many daily specials. Pleasant small environment with a friendly efficient staff.

My favorite breakfast treat is Althea's Eggs Benedict Florentine. Lots of spinach, eggs always perfectly done...I ask for sauce on side. All Althea's servings are ample. My husband thinks their crab omelet can't be beat. Friendly service, always.

What a great little family restuarant! I could eat there at least twice a week! The interior is a bit crowded, but you can understand when you go in and EVERY table is full! Go and enjoy some great food.

The make-or-break for me for a really good restaurant is their french onion soup. Althea's was incredible! The service was friendly and efficient. She recommended the pineapple upside down cake for desert and I know recommend it to you! Single serving, light and delicious.

We had a nice little breakfast at Althea's. I had teh egg and bacon croissant. The bacon was nice and thick. My hubbay had a traditional breakfast of eggs, grits and sausage. Service was good and it looks like they are doing some remodeling.

Big breakfasts. Excellent lunch salads. Reasonably priced entrees. Not Venice's best restaurant but it doesn't try to be. Strong service. Plenty of space for private conversation. Great value. Love the consistency.

Meh. Nothing stellar. Always very dark. Bathroom was not very clean. Dined on a Sunday morning (pancakes, eggs, omelettes, grits, toast, potatoes - so we had a large variety of items at the table). Nothing was bad, but nothing remarkable either. . . Well, except Max the parrot. The kids always get a kick out of him.:) We usually make one trip here for breakfast while on vacation. As more places open up in the area, I think this place has been knocked out of our vacation dining rotation.

My family that lives in the area swears by this place. It has the location, but that's about it in my opinion. There is nothing bad about Althea's, just nothing worth commenting on.
