In the USF area you hear a lot about T-Flats, Taco Bus (of course) and even the occasional bit about Vallarta's, but I rarely heard about Taco\ Son until recently and I'm very surprised. Their food is definitely on par with Taco Bus even though they don't have the crazy hours to back it up. It's just as well, because the long waits at Taco Bus were getting a little old for me. It's nice to have a back up place to go when we want something a little different now. TacoSon has several vegetarian options beyond just beans and cheese. While they don't have tempeh or tofu, they do have some surprisingly filling pepper and cheese tamales as well as a sweeter corn and cheese tamale, and a very desserty pineapple tamale. Otherwise their queso is pretty decent as long as you don't let it cool, and they don't over season their chips which is nice. Service was fast and the people were very friendly. In the short time we ate there the place became packed and cleared out twice, so they keep up some good traffic too. If you're in the area and want a slightly cheaper but just as good option to some of the other Tex-Mex choices around, you should definitely given TacoSon a try!

This place caught me by surprise. Everybody talks about Taco Bus and I've been there, but this place was just fantastic. I've had the barbacoa and the pollo burritos and a selection of tacos, and it all has just been nothing less than delicious.. worth a drive past the other places.

After a full day of moving we were starving and craving Mexican. After consulting Yelp we decided to drive up and try TacoSon. What an awesome decision!!! The three of us had chips and salsa, Barbacoa hard tacos, chicken soft tacos, beef tongue tostada, watermelon water and a Barbacoa burrito. The Barbacoa and beef tongue were excellent. The salsa was super fresh and tasty and the green hot sauce was fantastic. And the watermelon water was the perfect to all things spicy and salty! And finally, the staff was very nice! The only reason why I can't give 5 stars is because the chicken was really fatty. My dining partners unfortunately kept having to spit our fatty/grisly bites. BUT everything else was phenomenal and we will definitely be back for that Barbacoa and beef tongue with some watermelon water and chips and salsa on the side!

We loved this place! Customer service was excellent and it was some of the freshest tacos and taco salads we have ever had! If you are looking for a out of the way small dive taco place.. This is it! Must try: Pineapple tamale ..ridiculous good!

  • EJ P.

The first time I ate here I ordered carnitas tacos and was served pork fat and skin in a tortilla. Gross. The second time I ate here I ordered a taco salad with chicken and the chicken was more like pieces of chicken fat/skin and tendons. Gross. I will not be returning to this place. They serve low-quality food. That's why it's so cheap.

Raising the bar for Mexican cuisine! The food and service is exceptional and consistent! The prices are very affordable and the menu offers great vegetarian options. Definitely try the homemade salsa, huge taco salad, authentic tamales, and the tamarind tea! The restaurant is small but don't be fooled. It's the best I've ever had!

One of the tastiest beef tacos I have eaten! Ordered a couple tacos - chicken and the shredded beef and some chips and salsa. Everything tasted great and the price was very reasonable. Highly recommend the Barbacoa beef taco. I will be back here on the next trip up to Tampa

Order 2 breakfast burritos with chorizo and save the other for your wife or tomorrow's breakfast. The staff is awesome and it's one of those places you have to find out from the locals to find

We frequently order take out for lunch at work, and this is one of the only places in Temple Terrace that I really like to order from. For starters, prices are super reasonable. I usually get quesadilla which are under $5 and chips and salsa for another $2. Its a large meal for a low price. Another plus is that its fast. We place a large order, and its ready to be picked up within 10 minutes. The quality of the food is pretty good, but with any cheap restaurant, some things are better quality than others. Chips, queso, cheese, and veggies seem really fresh and delicious. The chicen is good, but probably not of the highest quality. You can't have everything for $7 right?? Overall I definitely recommend this for the area.

Was hoping for more...the place was busy so I took that as a good sign that hopefully I was in store for some great Mexican, however I was underwhelmed. We got the chimichangas with carne asada. The steak was a bit on the greasy side. I got a side of guac, it tasted homemade with great flavor however it was very spicy. I was really looking forward to amazing homemade horchata, but once again on my quest it was too sweet and almost had a minty taste.

One thing I've noticed in Tampa is that good Mexican restaurants are hard to come by. I've since lowered my expectations, but there are some decent places. TacoSon is one such example where the food is pretty good, but not great. The portions are abundant, but the food seems a bit too heavy for me. The salsa is decent, while the white cheese is pretty delicious. The rice has a tad spice, which I'm not accustomed to, but it's not bad. In my opinion, what makes the dishes is the garnishes and cheese which enhance the flavors. Shredded chicken and beef is eh. For Tampa this place is pretty good, but if you were in the Southwest it would be slightly above mediocre. At the moment this place is on my top 3 in Tampa, but I'll continue to look for better options. Prices are very reasonable.

If you are visiting Tampa, near Busch Gardens, and you want a Mexican treat, head over to TacoSon. It's one of the best hole-in-the-wall food joins we have been to. The food is flat out delicious! The prices are great and the portions large. Service is good too. Fish tacos were the bomb! The veggie burrito was great. Chips and salsa...fresh and re-fried beans and rice were homemade!

  • Steve A.

Really popular counter service place with authentic Mexican food. I tried the pibil and barbacoa tacos, both with everything. I've had better pibil, but the barbacoa was great, really succulent. The chicken burrito was a bit more ordinary. Best to go at off peak times, as on Saturday at lunch there were 20 people in line.

Yummmm...best taco joint in Tampa! This place is owned by the original Taco Bus owners. My fave is the shredded pork tostada. Nice crunchy shell with flavorful pork and fresh and crispy toppings. Crab tostada comes in a close 2nd. The beans and rice are really good and the flan & tres leche are delish! Once the owners sold The Taco Bus is became un-edible. Taco Son is the real thing!

Food is so good!! The shredded beef is absolutely amazing!! The people behind the counter are just as amazing!

Been coming here for a few years. This is a hidden gem. It may not look like much but the food is great. My favorite dish is the flautas. Best you'll find in Tampa area.

Taco Son: Hola... is it me you're looking for? Cece: Yes!!!! Yes!!!! *cries with happiness* After a long hiatus, I rediscovered this place. The food is so good. I was honestly not a huge fan of Mexican food until I discovered the difference between actual Mexican food and Tex Mex. The real thing is so much better, and Taco Son has got it. They even have a drive thru where you can get your grub to go... and still freshly made. When in doubt, order a burrito. Or tacos. Or chips con queso. It's all great, and you won't be disappointed. Oh and the horchata is much better than Taco Bus. It's motivated me to try making my own with extra cinnamon like they do. Yum!

  • Amber D.

This place has good service. The location is convenient, because there aren't many choices in this area. The food seemed authentic. I didn't like the Mexican type pickles on my taco, and was kind of less than impressed. By all means check it out yourself, many people swear by it. I just prefer the extra 8 minute drive to Taco Bus.

    (3)
  • Natasha F.

This place has a drive thru!!! Tried calling first to order, since Ive never been here before. Was very surprised to find a drive thru when I pulled in. Steak nachos were a huge amount, and awesome. Shreded beef chimi, fantastic. Food here is outstanding. My new favorite place!!

Back on U.S. soil.... Have had Mexican food crazies for a LONG TIME. Went with some of the team, this was GOOD! The place tried to comp us the food, but we said no. Thanks to the staff. You are the best! Oh and the food is the bomb!!!!!!! Go there!

Real mexican food. Went for lunch And the place Was packed but the line goes fast And there were plenty of open tables. I ordered the special of that day, pollo en salsa poblano, rice, beans, salad And corn tortillas for $7. Not bad. Everything Was tasty fresh And delicious. My friends ordered the beef empanadas And They loved them too.

I order two pork Taco's and they are the best I have ever had, now that was the real deal i just wanted to see if they were better than taco bus.The price was just a little over $4.00. I will never go back to the taco bus.

  • Jane P.

Best authentic Mexican I have had. When we are in Tampa we go out of our way to eat here or get it to go. The atmosphere is not great but we don't care much because the food is wonderful and reasonably priced. We always get one of the specials, they usually don't disappoint us.

    (5)
  • Ilana M.

Someone said that this place is run by the original owners of Taco Bus. Not sure if it's really true, but it makes sense. They have strikingly similar items on the menu, but for cheaper and better tasting. Feels more authentic than Taco Bus (and I love Taco Bus). I'd rather go here any day. I highly recommend trying this place out!

    (5)
  • Mitchel R.

Some of, if not, the best tacos I've ever had. Very good. Definitely check out the menu before walking up to order. Hard to decide!

  • Jessica L.

OBSESSED! I loved Taco Bus until they got rid of the barbacoa/shredded beef tacos. They had a bit more ambience than Taco Son, but I tried it again since they kept my favorite menu item. Winner! Amazing flavor and amazing value if you get the family pack! LOVE that they have a drive-thru for tacos to go. I hope next time to try more of the different items and fun drink specials they have. Business definitely seems to be picking up and they seem to be getting pretty busy during lunch time, parking was a little bit of an issue. It's easy to pass on the road but don't do it! My mom is a Mexican food snob and once I introduced her to Taco Son she went 3 times within a week and wants a t-shirt and probably a job there. That'll ensure she comes to visit me a lot :) Wish they were open later though and maybe delivered. Outstanding food and very authentic!

Great place Great food great prices! Real authentic Mexican food. There service is good but the food is always fresh!

  • Jason C.

I am an avid Taco Bus fan, but I must admit that Taco Son has some great options. I've had several of their dishes, and they've been quite good. I especially like their tamales. They have so many flavors that you could have your appetizer, entree, and dessert with only tamales. They're also very well-priced. Oddly enough, they have good carrot cake as well.

  • Nikita F.

This place is so much better than TacoBus, the food is fresh and authentic! I love it the Barbacoa is amzing! The prices are very affordable! I love it!

Get a burrito. You won't be disappointed, they do it right. Rumor is that this is the parent of Taco Bus, but don't quote me on that.

The marquee says it exactly. It is authentic, cheap and good. Not great in my opinion, because it is authentic. My chimichanga had dark chicken meat and no cheese inside. My wife the chicken nachos supreme and they were good.

Best food I have had north of the border. And very reasonably priced. Family of 4 dined with a full meal for under 30 bucks. Wow!

  • Christopher W.

Just an update on my previous post concerning a particular food item they offer on their menu... the Sonoran Dog. Yes, it's very reasonably priced for a hot dog, but I wish they wouldn't call it a Sonoran Dog. It's lacking the bacon and beans that pretty much every Sonoran Dog recipe calls for. So essentially it's a hot dog topped with salsa fresca, mustard, mayo, and a little squirt of their green chili sauce. A decently priced hot dog, but NOT a Sonoran Dog.

Great Barbacoa tacos and tamales. The mole poblano and chicken tamales were good too. Great value for lunch.

I've heard from several places that this place is better than Taco Bus but I definitely do not agree with this. After finally trying this place for the first time, I have to say that Taco Bus is MILES better than this place. The tacos at Taco Bus are much, much better, and the Mexican rice at TacoSon was TERRIBLE and almost inedible. The one cool thing about TacoSon that I might come back for is the tamales. It is a little bit cheaper than Taco Bus but I'd rather pay an extra dollar for 3 tacos and have them be a million times better.

  • Jennifer E.

This little place is a definite gem. Yummy food + reasonable prices = A most tempting combination! My husband and I have been eating at Taco Bus for a couple years now. We keep coming back because the quality of the food is consistently good. The portions are generous, for sure. Thus far, I've had the chimichanga (fantastic with the shredded beef), flautas, and the tamales. Ever since I tried the pork tamales, I've been hooked; they're all I can order! The pork is tender and flavorful, and the masa is so warm and delicious! My tummy gets all happy just thinking about them! While this place isn't fancy or swanky, it does the important stuff right: Fantastic Mexican food!

    (5)
  • Sam J.

This is the best taco place by far. Taco bus can't hold a candle to this. I'm only giving this place 4 stars because it took me 35 minutes to get a togo order.

Tacoson is a gem and deserves a five star rating . I have tried several items here. I recommend the chicken/beef tacos and tamales. In addition to these items I recommend sampling the homemade sauces. The extra hot habernaro and salsa verde are my favorites. For desert the horchata and rice pudding are the best that I have ever had. Keep up the great work Tacoson.

Why haven't I been here before? I love trying different Mexican joints. I tried the carnitas special, which came with rice and beans. Wow! I wasn't expecting so much food for only $5.75! The big pile of pork came with veggies and four corn tortillas as well. Only gripe was there was a lot of fatty pieces of pork. Will return for sure!

Fresh authentic Mexican food! Reasonable prices, great service and quality. I definitely recommend their guacamole I stop by at least 2-3 times a week!!!

  • Katie N.

I love this place! They have authentic Mexican food, and will customize your food to your taste/ dietary preferences. I ordered 3 tacos to go, but I asked that they be completely vegan. They were! They changed refried beans for black beans, and left off any ingredient that had milk, egg or meat. They are super friendly and very affordable. My 3 tacos and medium horchata came to around $9 with tax and tip.

  • Kim O.

This is real Mexican food. It is not fancy, but that's usually the way it goes when you're getting the best most authentic food. The tacos and burritos are amazing. The Barbacoa is my favorite. It is always nice and juicy with tons of flavor. Mr. O swears his last meal request would be the chimichangas here. It is a huge dish and it really is fabulous. Get everything loaded, as it comes. The toppings give the food the perfect finish. We have always had great food and service at tacoson.

  • Jason H.

Right down the street from my office so I can hit the drive thru and get some great food at a reasonable price extremely fast. My go to is the Burrito Panzon with Carne Asada. Cabbage, tomato, sour cream, beans, cheese and cilantro. The green sauce that comes with adds some flavorful heat to the burrito. This thing is huge by the way. Struggle to stay awake at my desk if I get bold and eat the whole thing. Well done TacoSon!

Great prices, clean and casual environment. My BF and I came in here using the Nearby button from the Yelp app. The cashier was informed and helpful with our questions, offered a free sample of today's special. Only thing they didn't have was Mexican Coke! Luckily everything else was great. I will be back next time to try the breakfast on the way to the work.

One of the great features of this little place is its DRIVE-THROUGH for those who want takeout! We got the Puerco Asado (grilled pork) meal with sides of salad, refried beans, rice and corn tortillas. This was a Saturday night. Everything was very fresh. The salad was made with cabbage, tomatoes, onions, cilantro with slice of lime and was delicious. The rice had peas and corn in it and was delicious. The pork pieces were delicious although a little dry for my liking. The corn tortillas were very good. We got sides of chips with salsa and queso dips, both of them excellent. Also a side of pico de gallo which was the best I've ever eaten - perfect amount of lime juice in it. Also had Three Milk Cake which was very good as well. This has now become our Mexican restaurant for sure! And here's the kicker - very reasonably priced! You should give it a shot. Wonderful!

Waited 17 minutes for 3 flipping tacos.... that is right 17 mins. Which is crazy. So I was already upset by the time I got my food. Wasn't even that busy. My neighbor waited even longer for his. So of course by the time I got home food wasn't that hot. We ordered at the same time just different cash register. Anyways, my food was just okay. Was hoping for a higher quality food than Taco Bell, so that is why I gave it a chance. Side note: if you are using a debit card or credit card they don't even swipe it at the register, they have to go to the side machine that both register use and they make you sign.

I think the food here is good, but the service is really erratic and chaotic at best. I was willing to forgive one or two gaffes when it comes to food; however, when it is here and there regarding missing food, or food that simply didn't arrive at the table or simply forgotten, then it's more than a once in a while problem. One problem was an entree didn't arrive for our party because there was confusion about which table it went do. On another occasion, a whole entree went missing and was prepared hastily after asking on its whereabouts twice. Food can be erratic as well, as sometimes the steak can be tough, where other times it is as tender as can be. Same for the chicken, sometimes it's a good clean product, and other times there's tendons and other hard pieces that need to be picked out. All of the food is cooked fresh, and when not rushed, it is quite delicious. Everything on the menu is good, and they have a great selection of vegetarian options for those that go that way. Indeed, their large selection of fresh vegetables (including cabbage, onion, cilantro, jalapenos, pickled onions - delicious, and guacamole) is a nice spread when combined with any of their menu items. We'll be back here, as this is a great mom-and-pop Mexican food establishment, but I'd like to see better consistency in areas like service and order accuracy.

On a visit to Tampa we found this delicious Mexican restaurant. The good reviews here are a bulls eye! Nothing fancy to look at, originally an old drive though joint of some type, and the original seating and decor remains. Order at a window inside, and the menu has many, many options. 3 of us ate for under $25. Flavorful, and large portions. Tamale, big and moist. Burritos are good two hand holder, and they don't skip on the filling. My husband raved about the loaded tacos. Pass on the flan...not worth the calories. Find something else if you have a sweet tooth. No free chips and salsa (although you can order some) Great salsa in big squirt bottles on the table. Green spicy, red milder. The parking lot was full, and the drive through busy when we arrived. The lines to order where a little long may 5-10 minutes...Don't go if you want a sit down experience. This is more like a Mexican fast food joint with cheap prices, and good food.

Used to be one of my favorite places to eat until I had food poisoning from their chicken lunch special. Even worse I later discovered that two- three of my friends had a similar experience. We now stay completely away! Would probably recommend taco bus or las vallettas over this place (at least their you won't get sick)

Fantastic food! Carne asada chimichungas were delicious. Guacamole was really fresh. Food was fast but clearly freshly prepared. Decor wasn't anything special, but honestly, with how good the food is, who cares. Great place for authentic, delicious Mexican food.

Great food, fast service and super close to my home. It is always busy and for good reason: it makes the most authentic Taco's in the Tampa Bay Area. Other places try to Americanize their food, but this place blows them out of the water. I grab take out frequently because of the quality of food for a great price. Delicious!

Great little authentic Mexican place! Very reasonable prices! We had the shredded beef and pork taco combo, shredded pork tostado, and a chicken tamale. Everything was excellent and less than 15$! Some of the best Mexican I've had!!! I will definitely come back!!!

My favorite mexican food! A lot cheaper than taco bus and taste waaay better. The cochinita pibil tacos are the best and I love the refried beans with the smokey bacony flavor...its got chunks of smoked pork in it sometimes, makes them amazing.

Fantastic prices, authentic Mexican fast food that is high quality. My husband loves the octopus and shrimp ceviche. I love the vegetarian quesidilla, and we both think that the homemade hot sauce on the table is delicious. Great prices and amazing food...you cannot go wrong here.

I was skeptical about this place but my boyfriend convinced me to go one night. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. I'm a huge fan of Taco Bus but I left convinced that this place is definitely better. Yummy!!

Yes it's very true, this place is nothing fancy, it's real simple and low key, but the food is delicious, always fresh and authentic. I have never had anything bad there and I go often for lunch from work. It can get busy around 12-1 during lunch hour, but usually they are able to get the food out fast given the popularity of this place. Absolutely love it, my favorite Mexican near work and where I live.

I must say I'm very picky when it comes to trying new food places... but I love Mexican. After reading the reviews I decided to beat the lunch crowd and I was not disappointed! I order the Burrito w/ refried beans , shredded cabbage, steak....I could go on but it was great. I will visit this place again in the near future. Also to add the service there was very friendly.

I'm returned to the Taco Son at least six or seven times since I wrote my last review. I stand by my original review. I think Taco Son is pretty good, but I definitely prefer the Taco Bus (Hillsborough Ave) or Taqueria Monterrey (Fletcher Ave). The food at the Taco Son is served in relatively small portions, and I feel like the staff is not very friendly. The interior is weird/boring. Don't get me wrong--Taco Son is good enough that I'm a repeat customer, but it's nothing great. I still need to try their breakfast--thanks for the reminder, Jay W. I will report back after I check out Taco Son for breakfast.

I like this little dive. I had two tacos, one chicken and one cochinita pibil. They claim to have the "Best Pibil" (a mural of a happy piglet donning a sombrero, painted on the exterior wall, says so) but I think Taco Bus' pibil is better. The burritos are roughly the size of an 8-month old child. They have the fresh salsas in the big squeeze bottles, always a good touch. The one labeled "Caliente" is hot, as the name would suggest, but has a nice layered flavor to it, not just scorching heat. This place gets very busy, so if you go for lunch try to arrive before noon. The line gets crazy. It used to be a Long John Silver's, and I only know that because I asked my lunch companions why there was a life vest hanging on the wall here as "decor." Service was quick and friendly and overall, this is pretty authentic, tasty, cheap Mexican food.

What a hidden gem of a restaurant. While everyone else go to Taco Bus and stands in long lines I'll come here to Taco Son and get just as good of food without the lines. Everything here is made from scratch and you can taste the freshness of the ingredients. The portions are big so you get your monies worth. Oh and their breakfast burritos are killer grab you one after a long night.

when i eat here, i feel like i am back in cali standing next to an antiquated taco truck with mariachi music blaring from a boom box and locals downing dos xx while speaking in their native tongue. let me first say that what most people consider mexican are items that can easily be ordered from the drive thru at taco bell. those bland bean burritos and faux cheese nachos are not indicative of my native land people. and those dorito tacos are most definitely not a traditional meal among my people. authentic mexican is flavorful, robust, full of color, and invades your palette with a swift kick of heat. the aroma and the taste invade your senses and you can almost feel the inches adding to your waist. tacoson delivers such a description and i am happy to make the drive from south tampa to chow down on some good ole' fashioned comida. the tacos are delish and at a $1.99 a pop, you can go for broke trying all of their carnitas (meat fillings). don't be so american that you opt for the hard shell or flour - keep it real and order the soft corn. trust me, you won't regret it. i always have the carne asada (grilled steak), barbacoa (shredded beef), and the chicken. the cow is definitely my preferred meat but the chicken has a seasoning on it that is memorable. i always hate when people order things off of the menu and don't keep it as is but instead add stuff, omit ingredients, or just plain change the whole item. get these tacos loaded - that means they will arrive to your table full of shredded cabbage, radish, cilantro, and onion. and who can forgo that nice little wedge of lime that you should most definitely squeeze over all of that goodness? i pour both house salsas over my food - the salsa verde is not for the weak...or those suffering from heart burn. the red is pretty mild. bring your appetite and order a side of guacamole, salsa, and house chips - which come to your table warm and crispy. after a meal here, you may just forget about those doritos locos tacos.

Stopped in this place on my trip to Florida. I had no idea what to expect, and was pleasantly surprised! The chicken quesadillas were yummy, and our server was friendly and nice. Try it out!

Always fresh ! I have eaten here many times. I always get the hard shell, puerquito pibil (shredded pork) tacos wirh everything on them. Refried beans and queso dip. The ingredients on the taco are always fresh. If you do not like cilantro then ask for no cilantro. I think they will do it. Very inexpensive. Much beter than Taco Bus in my opinion. Also the grilled beef tacos...the meat is very tender. Not a fan of the tongue tacos but I don't like tongue so that could have something to do with it.

This place is awesome! Tried a variety of their tacos and their chimichanga. Also tried their horchata. The layout is simple. Don't know if this is true, but I guess some of the cooks came from Taco Bus...can someone please confirm that? Although I'm not Mexican, I do compare this to restaurants in Mexico, LA and my Mexican friend's mom's cooking.

I always enjoy a trip to TacoSon. They have good, authentic mexican cuisine. The building isn't much to look at, but it really is a diamond in the rough. Great, fast service and customizable menus make this a must visit lunch destination. If you do get the shredded beef tacos, make sure you eat them quick because those shells will get soggy and break apart on you. Still, you can just sop up the spill, it's all good.

Food is very similar to Taco Bus (if your familiar with Tampa I'm sure you know Taco Bus) service is a bit slow but the food is good and fresh. When this place 1st opened a few years ago I ate at here 6 times in one week. I wish they were open on Sundays.

Perfect hole in the wall dive Mexican restaurant....I was hesitant about giving it too good of a review because I didn't want it to suddenly get hip and crowded but I have to be honest. People rave about Taco Bus but I prefer Taco Son hands down. The staff is friendly and efficient and the food is fresh and tasty. What more could you ask for?

Got the 2 taco lunch special with pork. AMAZING. Much more flavorful than Taco Bus. perhaps even better than Taquiera Monterey. Highly recommend and will definitely be back. Authentic and amazing tacos in under 5 minutes. You can't really do better than this place.

Legit Sonora style Mexican. Like the stuff you can get in Tucson and Phoenix. They even have a Sonoran dog! Although the hotdog isn't bacon wrapped, it is pretty bangin!

It's okay. I didn't get much, but the place was nice and clean and pretty cheap. I liked their service, but like I said I didn't get much. I'd have to go back again to try one of their main dishes. I got the tostado meal which was pretty tasty though :)

I was happy to learn about this place opening. It's definitely being run by the previous Taco Bus owners. Puerco asado soft taco was great with the salsa verde. The chicken chimichanga was also very good. Ingredients were fresh and well prepared. Octopus and shrimp ceviche was just OK, but the chips on the side were hot from the fryer and as good as they get. This is just like the Taco Bus of old, but without the Tijuana-meets-Seminole-heights vibe. Fine with me. They had plenty of grapefruit Jarritos in the cooler, too. So many places are always running out of grapefruit (you know who you are!) which is clearly the favorite.

Amazing amazing amazing. The only problem is they get backed up during the lunch rush so if you are pressed for time on your break it is hit or miss. If you got the time though, it is worth the wait. I've been there 5 times now and tried different things every time, there is nothing that is not great.

Fans of the once amazing taco bus should come here for much cleaner, inexpensive and higher quality food. They do not have as many vegetarian options as the Taco Bus however the overall quality is much better. Best Mexican in Tampa!

So I've been going to this place for a breakfast burrito since my brother reccommended it to me and all i can say is HOLY QUACAMOLE! this is some good stuff, i get the chorrizo breakfast burrito made all the way and comes with some home fries which are awesome btw and two salsa dippers for freis and the burrito...anyway the food is great, the staff is top notch and they even help me toe my broke down car out of their drive thru with a smile on their face. I am now a official loyal customer.

TacoSon may not be as well known as Taco Bus but that does not mean it is any worse. In fact there are many things that I prefer at TacoSon, especially the flan and breakfast. Any food I've ever gotten there has always been fresh, tasty, and affordable.

This falls under the category of best ever. This place is so good and so authentic I actually ordered the huevos rancheros, gobbled that up, then ordered two tacos, a La Lengua and a Crispy Pork. So damn good, so damn good, that's all I can say. The staff was and is very sweet. I have found a new home, the only shame is its far from home. Go here, you'll love it!

  • Rachel M.

This place didn't do anything for me whatsoever. Their pineapple water was too sweet. Tasted fake and blah. The shrimp and octopus ceviche was just meh. The octopus looked like thick masses of something, can't find a good word, but when bitten into, tasted like mush. It was swimming in tomato sauce with a slight lime and onion taste. The pork tamale had no good flavor just some pork mashed in the middle of a bunch of corn meal. I should have known when my hubby was like, ehh, you are going there. I don't want anything. I will pass. My hubby loves everything so that was a sign. But I had to try it. They didn't have the crab tostada that looked good to me, and I thought a grilled shrimp taco might be good but didn't try it. Meh, not coming back. I get it with Gigi's review, & how she sees this place as lazy.

I'll be back. Often. I went today because I was starving and in search of something with yellow rice. I ordered dos tacos, one with shredded beef one with chicken, with the optional cheese and sour cream with a side of rice and beans. I don't know if it was because I was so hungry or if the food was really that good but I ate every last bit. The shredded beef was full of flavor and not dry at all. All the flavors in the taco blended together nicely. If you're not a cilantro fan make sure that you ask for little or none. They're a little heavy handed with it but I didn't mind. If I were to list any negatives (in the Yelp spirit of being open and honest, I will), I did sit through the drive through and it was crazy slow. If their defense I got there right at 12:15 pm right in the middle of lunch rush. My other possible negative is the chicken. It was a little dry and I did get a little bone surprise in mine. Tells you it's the real thing lol. I've learned through my own cooking experiences that it's easy to dry out chicken. I do it all the time at my house but I'm also not a chef. I'll definitely go back and get the shredded beef but I may skip the chicken and try another meat. All said, my belly is happy which means I'm happy.

For the longest time TacoSon was my favorite place to grab tacos, until I found another place that dethroned them. They had a very good run though. What I like about TacoSon is the wide variety of options and daily specials they have and some unique offerings like the Sonora Hot Dog. Aside from their excellent tacos, they also have some of the best horchata in Tampa and a few other flavorful teas and aguas frescas. I also like the authenticity of the restaurant and the Mexican spirit that permeates throughout the restaurant. I always seem to go in their final hour when the workers pump up their Spanish music and start dancing and singing while they wrap things up. I still have a spot in mi corazon for them so I'll visit every once in awhile. I'll give them a 5 for now as I didn't realize I hadn't reviewed them and they should've benefited from where I had them ranked for so long.

Tampa is definitely becoming a battle zone for taco dominion. While similar to other taco joints in the area, TacoSon seems to stand out with better quality, portions, and prices. In addition to their typical protein choices, they also have daily protein specials which is awesome (get yourself in there on Monday for chicken mole!) Their quesadillas and tostadas are always a great choice, and the last burrito I had was bigger than both of my hands if that tells you anything. I was incredibly impressed by their taco salad, which I tried for the first time the other day. The combination of all the flavors (their refried beans and seasoned rice are especially good) was really great and super filling. Great, casual, hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint where you can expect fast, cheap, delicious food.

This place is what Taco Bus use to be good authentic Mexican food at a good value. The food is awesome and quick to serve. The 2 taco deal is perfect for lunch. They also have good southern tea!

TacoSon tastes fresh, and is pretty much my favorite quick-service indie taco joint in Tampa. I started eating there right after it opened. I moved from the area recently, and I'm sad that I don't get to pick up take-out dinner from this place anymore. Let me join the band and compare this to Taco Bus. Everyone loves Taco Bus, but I wonder how many of those people truly enjoy it because it's open 24 hours and they're drunk. I recently tried TacoBus since it's close to my new home, and I wasn't impressed. If TB used to be wonderful, it's severely declined to boring with small portions compared to what I remember. Now, I'll gladly drive out of my way to return to TacoSon.

  • Mark H.

Ordered 6 tacos. 1 hard, 3 soft flour and 2 soft corn. For the meats, chicken, puerco asado, carne asada and lengua. Of these, the chicken variant was the best. The carne asada was dry, gristly and missing that flame charred flavor you'd expect it to have. The lengua still had the taste buds attached. Most places remove them during the prep phase. Otherwise, the taste was ok. The rice and beans were decent, and the portions were large. I like that they do not use a pre-packaged yellow rice. Overall though, I was not impressed. I really had high hopes, and while everything was "se deja comer," I left feeling extremely underwhelmed. I will definitely not be back.

I finally got to try out TacoSon this past week and got a variety of food to take home for Betty and I. They food withstood the 30 minute drive back home which is a great sign. The (four) corn tortillas that accompanied my red chile pork were not turned to mush and were neatly wrapped within their styrofoam confines. The pork was flavorful and meaty, no hunks of fat or anything. There was also a little lettuce and tomato salad and refried beans with a smattering of melted cheese. The refried beans were delicious, and had a nice roasty taste to them. I also ordered a couple tamales for curiousity sake. The (rajas) cheese and green chile tamale was mostly masa and very little filling (very disappointing). The chicken mole tamale was on point with a balanced amount of filling (very satisfying :)) If I am ever in that part of town again and looking for some food, I would definitely head back again.

Small hole in the wall Mexican restaurant serves up great food! Great salsa; chucky yet juicy and very flavorful. And oh my god! The tamales! A close second to the tamales I grew up eating Chicago. Delish. My party had a few other dishes and they enjoyed each of them. You can not beat the price, which makes the excellent food taste even more excellent! Enjoy!!

TacoSon is a family-owned authentic Mexican restaurant featuring recipes from the Sonora region of Mexico -- hence the name TacoSon. There are two locations, one in Temple Terrace and the second in St. Pete along 22nd Avenue North. The Temple Terrace restaurant sits along 56th Street, a few blocks south of the Hillsborough River. This is a super casual spot (some might call this place a "hole-in-the-wall dive") which has drive-through window service as well as counter service for carryout and the seat-yourself dining room. Walking through the front door you'll see folks lined up at the counter placing their orders. The menu is posted on the wall above the cashiers, so you'll have to do that awkward "look up at the wall, look down at the cashier, look back up at the wall, then back down to the cashier" kinda thing till you complete your order. After you place your order and pay, then go fill up your drink and find a seat. They'll bring out your food once it is prepared. The menu has the usual selections of nachos, tacos, burritos, quesadilla, tortas, tostadas, flautas, and chimichangas that you'd expect in a good Mexican restaurant. You can order these items filled with carne asada (steak), barbacoa (shredded beef), pollo (el chicken), cochinita pibil (shredded pork), puerco asado (grilled pork), lengua (beef tongue -- shudders), or chicharron (fried pork skin in a green salsa). If you prefer vegetarian options they have a black beans / zucchini / rice / grilled veggies / cheese filling. TacoSon also offers ceviche made with shrimp, or shrimp & octopus; plus they have spicy grilled shrimp served a variety of ways. In addition they have daily specials including steak ranchero and pork in red chili sauce. Just a word of warning that everything is served a la carte, meaning chips, salsa, rice, beans, queso, and guacamole are all extra charges for most meal choices on the menu. They do have squeeze bottles of sauce on the tables, but make sure you read the labels or they'll be serving up your smoking tongue for someone else's lunch. If you happen to be on that side of town in the early morning hours, TacoSon has breakfast burritos, Huevos Rancheros, and the traditional Mexican breakfast sandwich on the menu. They open at 6:30am Mon - Sat and close at 9pm.

Why 4 stars? Because it's some of the better Mexican food in TB. --- --- --- As a native Houstonian, I am constantly in search of Mexican food that reminds me of back home, and TacoSon does a good job of doing just that. Don't come expecting anything fancy (which I view as a good thing in a Mexican restaurant.) This is definitely a bit of a hole in the wall, but it's nothing scary or shady. We ordered the loaded nachos, and they were a treat. TacoSon is reminiscent of Taco Bus, minus the long lines. Win-win!

I've been eating a TacoSon ever since they opened. Owner and staff are very friendly. And their food is outstanding. I normally get their special of the day or a burrito or tacos. My favorite meat filings are, steak, shredded beef and chicken. All are tasty. For breakfast I get vegetarian breakfast burrito. It is pretty big, and sometimes my wife and I split it.

Tried the hard tacos today with shredded beef. Soooooo perfectly created. I love that they marinate their onions and their shredded beef is so tasty & perfect. I also had a café con leche & I am a very happy camper right now.

Yo quiero TacoSon!! This place has authentic Mexican Fast Food. Their tacos are good quality and their sauce is amazing!!! I have tried their lunch specials, big, inexpensive and good quality. I have tried their nachos and I never finish them due to their generosity. Their juices (aguas) are really good and you should definitely try their Pineapple, Horchata and Jamaica (Hibiscus). In my opinion, there is one 5-star item that I would add to my I'm-leaving-Tampa-I-have-to have-this-before-I-go-one-more-time list: the crab tostada (tostada con jaiba). Only available on Fridays and Saturdays, they take a normal size tostada with mayo and load it with lumps of crab meat, topped with guacamole and pico de gallo... and I'm not talking imitation crab!! I am still figuring out how to eat this delight without making a mess but I'm working on it. It is $4.25 and if you have two you may not eat crab again in a while. Their service is decent/good, they have a drive thru and plenty of tables. It's a good Mexican fix on this side of town!

Amazing! THIS IS THE GEM I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR! Simple food in a simple place with ridiculously amazing quality! If I lived closer to Tampa I would eat here daily! This is a MUST TRY place in my book.

The first few times I went to Taco Sun I ordered the #1 Combo or #2. The food was fairly decent and the portions were a good size. The last time I went the guy at the drive thru window begged me for a tip which I was going to give anyway. I think that is pretty tacky to ask directly for a tip. The serving size of meat in the tacos and the beans and rice was very small! Their meat is ok but I have had better. They do treat you much better when you dine in than go to the drive thru. I won't be going back anytime soon.

There are days in which I feel more Mexican than Frida Khalo regardless of the carefully threaded shape of my eyebrows. Something unknown, a visceral pang, my soul screams a fierce "orale!" and it kicks me over the border and I must eat Mexican food. FOR DAYS. I never feel Japanese for days. I never feel Hindu for days. No matter how much I love Italian men, I never feel Italian for days. Had Green Lemon yesterday and I knew that my Puerto Ricaness would have not returned by today. Tried to shake it off by pretend-wearing gym clothes. It is one of my social experiments. I count how many people ask me whether I am heading to the gym or returning. I look at them up and down, offended, stunned...and reply: "The gym? Oh, I don't do that." So I did. Walked out trying to remember the words of the Puerto Rican hymn, but caught myself humming "la cucaracha." I simply gave up. Where could I find affordable, authentic-tasting Mexican food? I was already wearing my gym clothes...Where could I exercise my Spanish? Tacoson! The obvious answer. Every time I go, I am transported to my days crossing the border from El Paso to Juarez (without the long lines and the border patrols.) Drove the fifteen minutes day-dreaming of aguas frescas and guacamole, corn tortillas and refried beans. The place was packed. The line reached the glass doors, and the drive-thru had seven cars waiting. No parking space at all. Prayed to La Virgen de Guadalupe for epicurean patience. Granted. Ten minutes later a melodic, highly accented voice said "can I help you with anything?" and I answered in all my Spanish enthusiasm "Si, quiero flautas de pollo, flautas de carne, pollo con mole y aguas frescas." And I heard a giggle on the other side and the whole conversation became a pueblo banter. Asked which agua fresca he liked best, he suggested tamarind. So I got that one. The flautas are three thick and long ones ( pardon the graphic unintended innuendo) filled with chicken or pulled beef. They crunch as you bite into them regardless of the guacamole, queso fresco and lettuce that decorates them. The plate overflows with rice and refried beans. I love dipping my flautas on the melted cheese and the beans. Messy eaters have more fun. This time I tried the mole for the first time at Tacoson. From all the moles I have tried in Tampa (including fancier places) Tacoson has the best. Perfect balance of cocoa and chili. Dark and syrupy mole sauce bathing the piece of chicken.. The chicken was seasoned and tender. No canned chicken to fool this Frida. No need to fax La Santa Muerte. The mole dish came with six soft corn tortillas that were warm and soft. Perfect to cuddle on the palm of your hand and combine as you wish. Suddenly, it was Cinco de Mayo in my mouth. Tacoson is in the middle of nowhere in Temple Terrace...small, unassuming, unpretentious... a few tables spread around. Festive red, green and white paper banners hang from the ceiling. You stand at the counter and order. Then you sit and wait. The food arrives. The banners make sense. It is a fiesta. If Tacoson decides to have another sibling I want to be the Tacodaughter.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from TacoSon, but needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. My husband surprised me by bringing home an order last week. The food held up really well despite it traveling in a styrofoam container for the 30 minute trip home. My favorite was the Colorado red chili dish. It contained a hefty amount of flavorful pork in red chili sauce, a side of refried beans topped with some melted cheese, a light salad of crispy lettuce and tomatoes, and 4 corn tortilla shells that were neatly wrapped and kept warm when unraveled. We also tried out to tamales. One was pork mole and was filled nicely. The other was a cheese and green chili, but was mostly masa with no filling. Overall, I would definitely give this place a go again.

I've only eaten here 3 times and every time it was so good I nearly exploded. Very accommodating, price is very reasonable for the actual amount of food. Flavors are great. I've never gotten a burrito anywhere that was as good. It's a bit far for me to go frequently, but they'll get my business when I've got the time. On Mondays they have mole (one of my personal favorites), they had no problem making it into a burrito, so yummy.

Excellent flavor, reasonable prices. A++ I go here at least once a week (sometimes more, eek!) it's one of my favorite restaurants for casual food. Try Barbacoa beef! Chips and salsa! I love to support the little guys, rather than chain restaurants. If I was Spanish, this is the kind of food I would expect my mom to make. Tastes perfect to me :)

Best Mexican food in Tampa! Can't go wrong with anything you try. Tried Taco Bus but this place runs them over hands down! Burrito panzon is my weapon of choice every time! Been a loyal customer since I've moved to Tampa over 7 years ago!

This is the only authentic Mexican food I've found in Tampa, and it's extremely good. The guacamole is fantastic -- rich with ripe avocados and seasoned with the right amount of cumin, salt, and lime. The large is the right amount, be it one hungry guacamole lover or a few casual guacamole eaters waiting for the rest of their order to arrive. The carne asada burrito is excellent. The tamales also are excellent, and can be pre-ordered and taken home in large trays if you are feeding a large group at home. Perhaps best of all, though, is the salsa, especially the green salsa. I have no idea what it is or it what makes it so good, but it is the right mix of peppers, salt, and smoke, and perfectly accompanies their food.

We were looking for yummy tacos in Tampa and had not been impressed with the rave reviews from Taco Bus. We went a little bit out of our way to try TacoSon, but I'm glad we did! We found awesome food! Tacos were delicious and stayed crunchy, no soggy mess! Will definitely be back, they easily have the best tacos in Tampa!

Really good taste to all the meats, best taco place in town beats all the other choices like taco bus

I like tacos, but I just don't particularly care for these tacos. I feel like it's a lazy excuse for Mexican food.Lazy that the place is a shack, lazy that the taste buds aren't peeled off the lengua, lazy that there's a sign offering 1.00 candy bars on a fruit-only bowl.Lazy that I was served more fat than actual meat chunks. Lazy that I drove all the way in from North Tampa to try it, and left wanting my empty stomach back so I could fill it with something more worthy. This place isn't entirely a lost cause because Taco Bus no longer serves lengua at all, so there's that.

TacoSon still serves great food at a fair price. I have never had anything there that was not fresh and delicious. Basic tacos have meat, shredded cheese, cabbage, onions, sour cream, pico de galo, and cilantro. There sauces/salsas are amazing so try both green and red. You can eat in, take out or even use the drive-thru. We are always happy and full after visiting TacoSon.

In the area is one of the best Mexican restaurant, it has a good chill vibe. And the food is good. The chicken quesadillas are good, the burrito was not the best...you have to get the rice and beans. The tortillas don't taste store bought. The soft tacos are really good too, but the chicharron tacos were soggy. It has a great menu, you have to try different things to see what you like.

Working in the area and was in the mood for Mexican and found TacoSon on Yelp. I kept it simple and ordered 2 chicken tacos on flour tortillas. A little strange that adding cheese was extra, but only around $.25 for each taco. They came with shredded cabbage, cilantro, onion and tomatoes. I really enjoyed the first taco, very flavorful. The second taco was not as good- very large chunk of chicken that was almost all fat. Took it out of the taco but that wound up being all the chicken in the taco. Otherwise still tasty and I also added some hot sauce they give you. I would still give them another try! They also have a drive thru, which was a pleasant surprise.

I almost never write yelp reviews but the food and experience was so good I had to. I was down at the beach craving tacos and saw good reviews so I drove out to give it a shot and was not disappointed. We got a chicken burrito, a grilled pork burrito, 4 beef tacos, and 2 carnitas tacos. The three of us were barely able to finish the burritos and 2 tacos let alone the extra 4. The quality was just as good as the quantity. The flavors married perfectly, the toppings weren't like your chain restaurants where they just throw it on in gallons and hope you enjoy. It was the most authentic and quality Mexican food we have had in a long time. And the prices are incredibly affordable. Everything we got (not including the drinks) was 20-ish bucks. If I'm ever going back to Tampa I will definitely be visiting again

If you're looking for a great authentic food look no further! I love places like this, can't beat the authenticity and prices. The wait can be a little long if there are many people in the drive thru or if you are like me and ordered a feast. Overall this place beats most, you can't go wrong.

Can't beat their Steak Burrito all the way. Simply delicious with lots of salsa verde. Better than the Taco Bus. Life is good.

I've been missing Mexican restaurants like this. Located in "south Temple Terrace," this Mexican dive reminds me of places I used to go in Los Angeles. I panicked at first when I was asked if I wanted my taco on corn or flour tortilla (tacos should NOT be served on flour tortillas!), but the food was awesome, so I will forgive them for being gringo-friendly. You order at the counter, then someone who will mispronounce your name brings it out when it's ready. They are pretty darned fast if you order something that doesn't need to be fried. I think I was in and out of TacoSon in about 30 minutes (mind you, I was alone, so the eating part was fast). I tried tacos with three different meats to get an idea of what they have to offer. I tried the tongue, the cochinita pibil, and the chicarrones en salsa verde. I think the tongue was my favorite. It was melt in your mouth tender. The two other proteins were also very good. The tacos were served simply, with a little cabbage, onion, cilantro, and pickled onions. Add a tiny bit of limon juice, and that is heaven on a plate. They had tamarind iced tea but I didn't see horchata, which makes me a little sad.

I grew up in Texas, California, & Arizona & with many visits over the years to basically all sections of Mexico. I love good Mexican food, with all of its' varieties. (Tex-Mex, vs. Guadalajra, vs you would think you were in France in Mexico City, and so on) I tend to be quite critical of Mexican Restaurants. I thought, based on 3 visits, that TacoSon was very good. Food fresh, good sauces, and a variety of items were excellent. I found the staff pleasant, but, I do speak Spanish. Comparison with Taco Bus: like them both. Will be forced to keep comparing! Decor-will have to check it out more closely next visit. (for me the typical good Mexican restaurant is garish with brightly painted walls, usually booths with rather beat-up plastic, or chairs that have seen better days, etc. In many probably best not to inspect the kitchen!)

Delicious and authentic Mexican food at a reasonable price. Forget the Taco Bus, this is where it's at...Don't miss it!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
