The service isn't great, I get it, it's Friday night and you are stuck here.... But have a little curtesy with the ONLY customers there at this time (9:50 pm).. Other than that food was AMAZING and that's exactly why I came here. DDD.... Tried Cochinitas, Chicken and Butternut Squash tacos and the cochimitas and butternut where the best ones I've tried (and I love Mexican food)... 100% recommend it!.. But please be patient the girl at the cashier won't put her phone down for anything.

Worse taco place ever....omg,how can they have 5 locations in Tampa if all they serve is 100% crap. How can anyone screw up a torta? Well, tacobus did! Tasteless meat and insipid and tasteless sandwich. Never mind the so call mango ceviche that taste like they served out of a Sysco jar and to our table. Bottom line stay far away from the worse ever wanna be Mexican taco truck. Sincerely A real Mexican!!!! P.S..Unless you are Mexican and have been raised eating Mexican cuisine ,then the review has to be read as not really true recommendation.... Sorry, but that's a fact.

This was my first time eating at Taco Bus (I know, I know) and while I wasn't blown away (as in, "All other tacos wallow in your shadow!") given the crazy amount of hype surrounding this place, it was a very good meal and I'll certainly be coming back; whether that's here or at one of their other locations. I was coming in hot after a two-hour-turned-five-hour trip to the *lovely (*no, really!) Toyota of Tampa Bay and hadn't eaten anything that day, so I burst through the Bus doors with my stomach growling like the Great Pit of Carkoon, hungry for Jedi sacrifices. It turned out tacos and cheese would suffice. I was too hungry to bother reading the entire menu and the words "Based on a 5,000 Year Old Mayan Recipe" jumped out at me - because, well, Mayans are (were?) cool - so I ordered the Cochinita Pibil. The front of their menu said "Broken English, Perfectly Spoken," so I hope Mr. Cash Register didn't mind me saying Cochinita Pibil in "Broken Spanish, Horribly Pronounced." My gastrointestinal Sarlacc demanded more, so I combo'd the hell out of my meal and topped it off with chips and queso. The food came out quickly and I probably ate it faster than I've ever eaten a meal. I'm going to try and recount a few details from the blur of that feeding frenzy. The soft tacos were a little on the small side to me, about the size of my palm, but they didn't skimp on the meat and the shredded pork in achiote and bitter orange had a great, citrusy flavor. I doused the tacos in their Salsa Verde (roasted jalapeño salsa), and ended up turning my queso a milky-green with the stuff. It was goooooooood (pronounced: goooooooooood). It had a great spicy, smoky flavor and it added a nice kick to the queso and tacos. The queso was topped with some roasted corn, tomato, and pepper which was a nice touch. The queso was thick without turning to sludge, and thin enough without being water, AKA prime dipping, folks. Top-notch queso. While I ate the two tacos in about 30 seconds flat, they had great flavor, and the rice was good as well. Really my only knock might be the taco portion size, but all in all I left satisfied, and I look forward to returning and trying other menu items.

It has been awhile since I've been to the USF location of Taco Bus as I am loyal to the original Hillsborough location. I decided to order online today and pick it up for lunch. The online ordering process was easy but they the earliest pick-up time is 20 minutes out. Which I guess would be beneficial if it's busy at the location but there was no one in line when I went. I could have just ordered at the counter. Also, my order wasn't even ready when I arrived. Anyway, I got the torta sandwich. I choose Al Pastor as my meat since it's new (to me at least). I usually ask for no refried beans but I'm glad I decided to keep it in the torta today because the filling was seriously lacking. I've had Al Pastor pork before at other Mexican places and Taco Bus's version has no flavor. I should have stuck to my usual cochinita pibli. There wasn't that much veggies or mayo either, just a lot of bread. I drenched the torta in their red and green hot sauces. I also saw that shrimp was no longer on the menu. Taco Bus has gotten more commercialized of course. One of the draws of Taco Bus before was the different types of meat they used to have, including lengua (beef tongue) which was the most tender beef ever! Now it's becoming more generic, at least at this location. I am going to just stick with the Hillsborough location unless I am super craving Taco Bus at work.

What an awesome late night place to eat. I always get the burrito prenado with everything.. It's quite filling. I also ask for sour cream since it doesn't come with it and it's extra $. Sadly, they recently changed the menu and I miss the garlic shrimp they used to have as well as other menu items. I used to eat here all the time but have been eating here less since their menu change. It's still a great place for a post-going out meal! A lot of their menu items are yummy and you kind of have to try different meats to see which one you like best. I think the best part of their menu is the green taco bus-made salsa they make. When I take my food to-go, I always have to ask for extra because it's so GOOD.

I really like Taco Bus, but this location lacks some things. They have a lot of a trouble getting orders right. I still like Taco Bus, but expect your order to be wrong.

I had the papos with cochinita pibil which was delicious. Great flavoring. Did not give 5 stars as I feel the food is pre-made earlier in he day and sits all day. I've had fresh tacos before which are full of all kinds of flavor.

All I ever hear is how great Taco Bus is but I'm not impressed. I went with a group of friends after helping them move and none of us had been before. I don't think anyone plans on going back either. It took forever to even get the food once we ordered. The Hibiscus Lemonade tasted awful so we ended up throwing it away. I had a burrito that was nothing special and wasn't even better than Taco Bell for twice as much. My food was very bland and not great quality. There was not a clean table in the place and the rest of the restaurant matched. I just don't think Taco Bus lived up to the hype.

Taco Bus used to be the best. Unfortunately they've sold out and are now corporate. Prior to being on The Food Network, Taco Bus was heavenly. Everyone visiting me from out of state wanted Taco Bus as soon as they arrived. It was a dirty little hole in the wall on Hillsborough Ave and it was good. You ordered your food from folks who didn't speak any English and no one working there spoke any English either, but you still always got your order perfect, hot and delicious. Every taco, burrito, torts and etc. came with delicious pickled red onion, it was the best flavor ever. It made it good. Now, you're lucky to see a sliver of a pickled red onion. The sauces were thick and in unmarked containers, now they are watery. It's sad. The people I saw working there for years are now replaced with English speaking people, which for me takes away from my taco bus experience and I think takes away from my food. I miss the old taco bus. I had to find a recipe to make my own pickled red onions because my family and I missed them so much. Now we make taco bus at home. I do still enjoy the Agua Fresca and will sometimes get takeout so I can bring it home and do it up!

This is a nice Mexican option that we rotate in our eating selections (maybe come a few times a month). I will say though, I had to stop ordering chicken items after three times in a row I came in to get pollo verde and it had bones in it. Their picadillo is what I've been getting lately and it's great as a torta! The torta bread is unlike any other bread I've tasted: very soft, with a light crispy crust. I think they even butter and toast it before serving. One thing that is so weird that they started doing is cutting their burritos in half; who does that? Now it's no longer a burrito, it's a wrap. Nonetheless, still a good lunch option if you're in the area.

Who doesn't love fresh no fuss ingredients on a tortilla?! My go to are the soft corn tortilla tacos. This time I had one carne asada and one carnitas. I love the crunchy cabbage and fresh squeeze of lime topping. The queso appetizer is average. A nice heat to it but nothing to make it stand out. The refried beans could use some more seasoning. Overall, my fiancé and I ate here for just under $20 (4 tacos, queso, refried beans) and left full and satisfied.

Good service and food. I liked their mango fish salsa, with pieces of jicama and mango it was delicious foil to a carne asada torta with extra green hot sauce. Sauces seem a little watered down compared to the original location but still spicy and tasty. Kinda upset they took lengua off the menu but maybe it wouldn't sell in this campus centric area. Great place to grab a snack late at night.

A lot of people have downplayed Taco Bus every since they expanded, but their food is still good enough for me. Their shredded chicken quesadilla is my all-time favorite, I haven't had a better quesadilla. Maybe it's just me. Fish tacos are pretty good also, as well as their burritos. I tried my first tostada here and it was delicious as well. Great place for the USF student who's out late.......drunk.

First visit and loved it! Lots to choose from to make any combination of burrito or taco meal you'd like. Bright, clean, fast, reasonably priced, and the food was very nicely prepared in very generous portions. My wife had tortes carnitas and I had grouper burrito and we are both very satisfied. We'll return without question!

This location is better than the Downtown Tampa location but not better than the Hillsborough location. If you want delicious real deal Taco Bus you have to go to Hillsborough.

Ok...they can have another star now. I went today expecting to get my usual quesadilla with the pollo verde and they didn't have any pollo verde. :-( I was absolutely heartbroken. I really hope that's not a permanent change because then I will have to find another meat to love there. Since pollo verde no esta alla I got the chipotle chicken. Not as good...and it tasted like processed chicken. I'm hoping this was just a fluke because I do love Taco Bus and now that I work right down the street I was hoping to make this one of my Mexican craving staples. All in all they still earned another star from my last visit because although I went right in the middle of lunch rush the service was quick and they got my order right. Food service 101 I know but you can't take those things for granted.

This Taco Bus just doesn't measure up. I stopped by today to buy one of their tshirts as a present for my nephew before I move out of tampa. I asked the guy at the counter if they had the shirts in kids sizes. He went to the back to check and informed me they carry them but currently they were all in the managers car, who was not there at the time. But I was welcome to come back later. I was annoyed, but decided since I was there I might as well pick up some lunch for my boyfriend. I ordered his standard butternut squash burrito and a watermelon Agua fresca, but of course they were out of watermelon, so pineapple instead. While my boyfriend liked the taste of his burrito, it definitely wasn't "extra large" or worth $7.48 without any sides. I think Taco Bus needs to hold off on more locations and work on consistency and value at their current locations.

Great study break or hangover food. Exceptionally filling with a variety of options. The burritos are stuffed to the point that I need to use both of my hands and my chin to keep gravity from getting in the way. The staff are quite friendly and offer good discounts for locals.

This is a great place to eat. It is close to USF, and they have a USF discount. It is different from the original one in Seminole Heights, since it is solely a building, and does not have the food truck. I usually get the Torta (Mexican Sandwich) with chicken, and it very good. My only complaint about the sandwich is that they have added jalapenos several times, when I specifically asked not to have them. I sent it back once because of the jalapenos, and I was brought back the same sandwich, but the jalapenos were picked out, which I could have done myself, but the taste is still there. A positive aspect is that they have also started to add vegan options, such as vegan cheese, while still having chicken, beef, and carne asadas. The burrito prenada is also very good, with the beef option. They also offer corona beer, iced tea, and the new soda machines that offer a ton of selections. This location has also recently updated their decor, and added some new items.

Best Mexican in Tampa, not necessarily. Will satisfy your Mexican food craving? Sure, maybe?.... I was born and raised in California and I grew up eating authentic Mexican food so you can call me a "Mexican food snob." I ordered the carne asada tacos (requested with no cabbage. Cabbage in carne asada tacos? Must be a "Florida thing") The taco was in a flour tortilla (you can order corn instead if you like) which was soft and pretty good, carne asada was really bland and didn't have much flavor, but I drenched it with salsa and it was really, really good! They have 2 different types of salsa: red salsa which is mild and a green salsa that had some kick. Adding the salsa made the taco more flavorful and enjoyable. Another time I ordered the carne asada torta and it had very little meat and was still lacking of flavor, but again I added lots of salsa. The next time I come here I will try a different meat and maybe it will be more flavorful. Also, the people working here were always welcoming and friendly. TIP: You can order online or call ahead for pick up. You can buy a 12oz bottle of there yummy salsa for $2.95.

Taco bus (USF ) is pretty solid and good Mexican fare. I tried the Cochinita pibil and carne asada tacos. They were good and I love their green sauce that it comes with. (Very hot. tread with caution) They have a 10 % off w/USF ID. Whats nice is they are open late on Fri/Sat for your drunken needs lol While there's nothing bad, IMO Cali Tacos is better.

Great place for a quick lunch if you are near USF! It's not the same authentic feel as the location on Hillsborough.... but the same amazing taste.

I'm not one to complain, BUT... this was the first time here ever and I'm not impressed... in fact, I'm very upset because I could not eat my $12.00 order! I ordered online to save time, to be able to go over the menu and custom order without feeling rushed. I ordered a steak taco (Carne Asada) and a (Pollo) Deliciously seasoned chicken combo. I ordered them on corn tortillas with cheese and sour cream (which you have to pay extra for, for both the cheese & sour cream) and in the special instructions/notes, I added "No Pico De Gallo" (As I cannot stand onions or cilantro). Once I placed my order online, it gave me a pick up time of 1:10, which I was there right at 1:10. I waited about 5 minutes in the "Online/Phone Orders" line. Okay not too bad, but this was supposed to be a faster way to pick up food. Now, the food: All served COLD; The steak was chewy and fatty (I spit most of it out), the chicken was not deliciously seasoned, it tasted like dog food, the corn tortillas were cold, not cooked, and there was Pico De Gallo on them! The beans were more like pureed baby food (also cold) and the rice was clumpy and yes... cold. The only good thing was the Dr. Pepper and the music, that I could not understand. Will not be back. I read some reviews AFTER my experience and wish I would have read them before. I read that since the place was bought by new owners, it has gone down in the dumps. Lesson Learned! I won't give up Taco Bus entirely, I will give another location a shot, just not this one.

Didn't have a great experience. Have eaten at a Taco Bus before and loved it. Not a lot of veggies on our tacos or burritos. Staff was less than cheerful.

I am always a fan of Mexican and for a small chain, they food is delicious. The El Jefe is the way to go! 2.5 lbs of food! It is a reasonable priced meal to split. If you are a USF student it has to be a staple and a biweekly endevor.

Very decent place with good late night options. I especially love their grilled tofu, vegan steak strips, fish, and chicken mole. I recently discovered their tostadas. They have a nice crunch. I do miss when they were Taqueria Monterrey. The salsa bar and many preparation options were awesome.

What an experience, I love this place. I always order cow tongue tacos and they are delishious! The flavor of the meat they serve is extremely authentic! The portion sizes could be bigger but the service is excelent and the locations are always clean and neat. For an authentic mexican food truck experience in a retail location this is about as good as it gets!

I hate to do this to the Taco Bus, and I want to make it clear that this review, in no way, reflects on the original Hillsborough Ave. location, but this locations SUCKS. After trying it, re-trying and continuing to try it we have found the service lacking, our orders are always messed up (i.e. I get cheese on my no-cheese, vegan burritos, etc.), the taste somewhat...off?, and the overall experience getting worse with each visit. We won't go to this location again. Do yourself a favor and just make the trip to the original- they get it right. Every. Single. Time.

I was greatly disappointed with this version of the famous taco bus. We had just arrived after a vegan tasting at Whole Foods so I only wanted something simple like beans and rice. They put cheese on the beans. This was after reading a sign by the door that talked about how their beans and rice were vegan. I was able to flag down the person working who rectified the problem. We also ordered three tacos to go. One was for a heart patient who needs to eat a controlled amount of cheese. We asked for a light amount. We probably should've checked before we left but we didn't and when we handed it over to him it was completely doused. On top of all this, I find the food tastes a bit different than the other location (bland). Not sure why this would be (although the red sauce seems the same which is great news since I use it to correct any taste issues). I've never had problems at the original location with service or my food being prepared incorrectly. I won't go to this location again.

Taco Bus is the local mom/pop Tampa crack at authentic mexican food and they do a pretty good job. The food is good quality and made according to traditional recipes. There are a few different locations, I usually hit this one up since it's near USF. The best thing to get here are tacos, especially if your most extensive background with Mexican food is something like Taco Bell or chain stuff like Chipotle. They use corn or flour tortillas and add meat + cilantro, lime, onions and either a green or red sauce (or both) which are pretty spicy. I think the green beats the red though. It's a shack-type spot but they run pretty smoothly and if you want a quick bite along with some decent OG mexican food, look no further.

The place has been clean the times I've visited it. I enjoyed the shrimp taco but it was a little too spicy for me; however, I was informed I should try the garlic shrimp taco. So that's on my to-eat list. I also appreciate the diary-free and vegetarian options.

It is so nice to have the Taco Bus close to USF - I was getting a little tired of driving to Hillsborough Avenue every time I wanted some decent tacos late at night. California Tacos and Vallarta's are both good alternatives, but are not within the same proximity to campus as this new Taco Bus location (plus California Tacos closes at 7PM...). Most foodies would pan me for not including the former Taqueria Monterrey on any of my dining guides, but I honestly had several bad service and food encounters with it, that's why I am glad the Taco Bus has replaced it. Taco Bus comes with less service expectations and a greater expectation for quality food and availability. I will definitely be ordering online to avoid the crowds as they rapidly begin to grow as more USF students find the new location. I was one of the first customers at the Grand Opening and I was happy to be there - it is great to see Taco Bus spread their product around Tampa Bay and create a signature Tampa brand. I have dined at all four locations and each one is a little better than the last. There were familiar faces in the restaurant which keep things flowing and allowed Taco Bus to avoid some potential mishaps on the first day. I hope they will keep some of the veterans around long enough to allow the location to establish itself, this can be tricky sometimes when a restaurant opens a new location. Although I am sure Rene has plenty of experience with his previous Taqueria Monterrey and Taco Bus locations. The tacos de carne asada and horchata were both consistent with the other locations. The 10% USF discount is enough to keep me loyal to this location completely in the future - a great perk since Taco Bus really does not do discounts. I plan to try their beer specials in the future. I love my new Taco Bus t-shirt and swag and am looking forward to many future visits to the USF location for some late-night tacos, especially as I move a few minutes away later this August.

I just recently discovered this Taco Bus location by USF and was pretty stoked to see it was so close to school for a quick lunch break spot! I have always loved all the taco buses so I couldn't resist stopping in right away for lunch. I called my order ahead and was told it'd be ready in 5 minutes, I got there shortly after and sure enough it was ready and there was no wait. I ordered the burrito with cochinita pibil (like a mexican bbq style shredded pork) rice and beans and all the usual toppings. It was really tasty and pretty large serving, I couldn't even finish it. The red and green sauces both have a pretty hearty kick to them, so use sparingly unless you like the extra spice. The only downsides here are that #1, it's not really a bus, just in a store front plaza with a bus drawn around the order counter *womp womp*. #2 is that the seating options kind of suck. There are 5 or 6 wooden booths, which probably take the cake for being most "comfortable" but of course those are always full. So I sat at a high top stool on a long table in the middle. The stool was so unbelievably uncomfortable, I woolfed my food down in 10 minutes flat just to get out of there. Would be nice if they could add some cushions or different chairs to make it a bit more comfortable. On a side note I would say their seating options are lacking at ALL locations. Overall, I'm a die hard mexican food lover and they did deliver a good solid burrito. The horchata and mexican flavored waters are always fabulous too, so no doubt i would be back. (Maybe next time I'll bring a pillow to sit on :0)

I really hate giving two stars because I wanted to love this place with its huge fan base and all its hype around the food. I will say though my boyfriend and many other reviewers said its the location, and the original on Hillsborough is the best. I will ABSOLUTELY be trying that location out. That being said, the food was just plain awful. I ordered the tostadas, essentially a hard shell taco smothered in refried beans and stuffed with fillings(I got chicken with cheese, sour cream, onion, cilantro, etc). I chose to make it a combo with a drink and two sides which consisted of rice and beans. It was only ONE tostada, which was pretty small and didnt have alot of meat. Honestly, it was really hard to eat and not super tasty. This was the most edible thing though, as with the rice and beans it was VERY obvious they had been sitting out all day. Not fresh at all and just plain gross. My boyfriend said the same with his meal but he swears by the original location, so I am excited to check that out and my experience at this one isnt going to hinder me from it. Sorry Fletcher taco bus :(

Taco Bus is a brand name in Tampa anymore. Even though this location is closer to where I live I don't find the tofu or meats (yes, I eat both) as tasty as the 24 hour location on E. Hillsborough Ave. They have also messed up my order twice at this place, so one less star. Its still some of the best Mexican food you're going to get that isn't questionable.

I have been coming to this location since day one and the quality in the food has been declining. This location is more of a eat in restaurant unlike the original on Hillsborough which is set up like a actual bus. Management: please fix the door knob and sink in your restrooms, this has not changed since day one. ( this would pass on the original actual bus location to flow with the theme but not here). Good variety in selection of entrees and the chips and salsa selections are great.

The USF area needs some more options. Although this is in line with Taco Bell and Chipotle, the advantage here is the meats. They're delicious. From the previous Taco Bus, I had some bad experiences in terms of oily food, but it was just a matter finding my item: Tostadas with shredded beef. Absolutely delicious and cheap. I recommend getting two maybe three. It's nothing complicated, just a open face taco. I was surprised on how clean the inside was compared to other places in that area. Overall, I'm a fan.

I ordered the Quesadilla with Vegan Steak strips and it was great. Food was served quick and fresh off the grill.

Visiting from Ohio and was looking to get authentic Mexican food. Tacos had no flavor and they were extremely greasy. It was by far the worst taco experience ever. I would've rather had Taco Bell and we all known that's not authentic. (We had steak and chicken taco on the corn shells, which were not cooked!)

I enjoy visiting this location for lunch while I'm at work nearby. Although there is almost always a line, it moves quickly and the staff has always been friendly and asked me if I wanted yummy extras that I wouldn't think about, like extra cheese on my tacos. Whenever I order food here, it always comes out piping hot and well cooked. The last time I visited I ordered the combo with a vegetarian taco and a butternut squash taco. It was so delicious I declared it the best lunch I had had in a month. I prefer this Taco Bus location over the downtown location near my house. My only complaint about this location is that the tops of the sauce bottles on the table did not appear clean on my last visit, so I am no longer inclined to use them. :( Sad because they are so good, especially the green sauce.

Wonderful Mexican-style food. Try the shrimp tacos. This location isn't exactly a bus, but don't let that stop you.

  • Chris B.

Love Taco Bus. I'm glad they brought a store to the USF area, although I wish it was off Fowler and not a sketch area off Fletcher. There is always a line and only one person collecting payment. Don't understand that. Food is just as good as the Hillsborough location. 10% discount for USF students as well.

Taco Bus is the perfect combination of a creative idea, great marketing and consumer awareness all backed up by incredible food! This not the original location of Taco Bus, but it is equally as efficient and delicious. The idea of ordering out of an actual bus is a neat and creative idea on how to reinvent the burrito, so to speak. Which leads me to my favorite, the burrito! Their menu is filled with many options of authentic Mexican delights. The process is pretty simple, you pic what you want (taco, burrito, etc..). Then you select what meat you would like (chicken, beef, ....I would recommend the chicken that is cooked in their homemade green tomatilla sauce). Then select all the veggies you would like on your meal and your done. Their homemade salsas are incredible. They are staying up on current market by offering Vegan and vegetarian options. Accessibility to ordering your meal online is also another very smart convienience. This is a Tampa MUST! Whether at this location or any of the others around the area...happy burrito eating!

We ordered take out from here the burrito w/ steak and another with the braised beef. I like the steak better, bf like the braised beef. We had also ordered chips and guac which would have been fantastic had they actually provided us with the chips. Also disappointed to not have silverware with my takeout order. I called to inform them of the things they forgot and they offered to give us some free chips the next time... REALLY free chips on top of the already free chips you provide with a meal. Wow thanks don't go overboard!

I have been eating at the various Taco Bus Locations in the Tampa Bay area for years. I usually order the Burrito Prenado with shredded beef. What I received today was very sad the Burrito was half the size with half the filling I even had to pay extra for the little packet of sour cream?????? I asked the people that worked there what happened to the food and they told me the original owners sold Taco Bus to an investment group. If this is why the food has gone down hill I will not be returning I loved there food the way it used to be but not now. So sad for a company to put less quality and quantity over profit. Another new owner investment group of a company that will be its down fall. Opinion left from a loyal customer that will not return. So Sad

If you come to Tampa, DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU HAVE TACO BUS! They have the most delicious vegan/vegetarian options (the vegan steak strips are da bomb!). I hear the carnivore options are exceptional too! The staff is ALWAYS nice, they are almost always very quick, and the food has never been bad.

I'm a hometown fan, so I'm always rooting for my team to hit it out of the park on opening day. Taco Bus on Fletcher (by USF) drove in plenty of runs with grounders and they definitely won their opening game. Out of the park? Nearly. I loved my tofu burrito with all the veggies, and the red and green salsas that came on the side added a memorable burn that was deftly assuaged by a watermelon agua fresca. (That's a fresh watermelon drink, by the way. They always have pineapple and horchata -- which is thick cinnamon rice milk.) Hey, it's an opening day. Your primary credit card machine isn't working? Well, that's why you have a backup. Good planning on the backup! Yeah, the line was a bit slow at first, but this is the first time they've had a line of customers to contend with in this kitchen, so they're still working on the body language that will get them fully up to speed very soon. You narrowly avoided overcharging me $2 because you thought tofu was an upcharge? (It isn't, but tempeh is, and vegan steak strips are.) Dude, we all get frazzled on opening day. It's okay. You fixed the problem cheerfully. Best of all, the very minor problems left a little room for Taco Bus USF to grow into a fifth star. [Since I was one of the first customers, Taco Bus gave me a T-shirt, a bumper sticker, and a keychain. I'm pretty sure that didn't influence my review, but I disclose so you can decide.]

This place was well worth the fuss. I was "dragged" there by a friend who insisted that I try it out to see why it was so popular in her crowd. I get it. It was really good. She was all about the Friday special of chipotle chicken (I think). I found several items on the menu to be quite tasty. I give it full marks and am glad I listened to my friend.

Food is over priced. Beans are terrible and the cabbage on tacos? Yuck! I wouldn't go here again if you paid me.

I absolutely LOVE their butternut squash tacos, their fish tacos...I love everything I have tried here so far! I would say the best tacos in Tampa. The service is great (you order and pay at a window and the food is brought to your table), the people are friendly and nice. I try to eat here at least once a week.

  • Howard C.

For the value, four stars. The interior is ... odd and too bright, but the food is good. The roasted butternut squash filling with their bottled salsa verde strikes a chord with me. The sweetness/starchinness of the squash is nicely complimented with the piquant, fiery green stuff. It's always great to experience that kind of a taste sensation in an inexpensive place.

I would just like to reiterate the fact that this food is slightly better than Taco Bell (which I think is crap food), possibly not as tasty as something like Chipotle (which I think is crap food), and a lot more expensive. Taco Bus is not a good Mexican joint; it's just a gimmick that has been severely overhyped by people in Tampa who've never been to Mexico or west of the state of Louisiana and eaten REAL Mexican food. Taco Bus would be in no way be considered "good Mexican" west of the state of Louisiana. However, for Tampa, where decent Mexican or ANY Mexican is rare, this is a decent taqueria. The fillings are hit or miss and taste old and off-seasoned, the tortillas are from a bag, the toppings are no biggie, the salsas are horrible, the prices are high. If you are from Texas, Cali, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and so on, or from Mexico, do not bother going here or to any other Mexican place in Tampa Bay. You will be pissed you spent money on what Tampa considers "great" Mexican food.

I had a savory, ample quesadilla with northern Mexican beef. The pulled beef could have chopped a more. The strands were long and it made it a messier meal to eat. If you enjoy that, roll up your sleeves and check it out!

Taco bus is not bad (as in not edible) food but not good either (closer to decent). That being said after having tried both Taco Bus and California tacos to go, Cali tacos is hands down better food. The flavor is much better. Taco Bus doesn't live up to the hype. I have tried the tacos and burritos at both and was shocked about how not good it was after reading all the reviews. Good service and nice people they just need to work on the food. I will not be going back.

Tried this location yesterday. It doesn't come close in taste to the other location. The watermelon water is still yummy and the salsa is incredible, but the chicken was yucky. I wouldn't normally use this word, but it is the only word that really describes it.

  • Leslie F.

Dare I say this is the best Taco Bus in all of Tampa/St. Pete? Wow. They are doing things right at this location. Friendliest employees and the take-out service is phenomenal. The quality of the food is perfection. This past Wednesday I ordered their daily special- Chicken Mole. Wowzers. Truly some of the best Mole I have ever eaten. Drool-worthy. Mild but so rich with complex flavors, I was in love. Instead of getting the mole in a taco or burrito, I chose to get their el plato where the chicken comes on its own with rice, beans and tortillas on the side. I was really able to savor the succulent chicken. In love. Go on a Wednesday and get the Mole! Stat!

More like Taco Bust. It was okay food but really, nothing special. For those prices, I'd much prefer the DIY tacos at Burrito Border or somewhere cheaper. It has a cool setup, with orders taken inside of an old school bus parked in front of the restaurant, and a chipotle style menu, but beyond that, the food just wasn't great. As much as I wanted to like the place- which has great service- it was only okay. I got the vegetarian tacos and shared the ceviche...the ceviche had a thick, tomato-y texture which I really don't like in ceviche. The veggie tacos were mehhhhhh. I'm not stopping for this bus again.

We had heard so much about Taco Bus but after a year in Tampa Bay, had yet to try them out. One day, while out shopping for groceries, we decided to stop by and grab dinner. Boy, were we glad we did! The food was some of the best traditional Mexican food we've had in a very long time. Service is quick and friendly, portions fit the price, atmosphere is fantastic!

Had a great lunch. Since this was my first time here I needed some help with the menu. My wife and I were given things to try as well as an explanation of how to put it together. Staff very knowledgeable. The pork special was excellent. My wife had it with a burrito and I had it with tostadas. Fresh vegetables and good salsa.

I was in the mood for tacos and saw the great reviews for Taco Bus and thought to check it out. I am Mexican and from Southern California, so I thought Taco Bus might give me a little taste of home. We went for a late dinner and didnt find the place very busy. The staff was really nice and after ordering, we got our food right away. I ordered the $8 dinner meal with 2 tacos (1 taco of Barbacoa and 1 of Pibil pork) with rice and refried beans. My husband ordered the torta with Pibil pork. And we got the Watermelon Agua fresca. I was excited to see they had CARNITAS! Its so hard for me to find carnitas in Florida, but they only offer it on Saturday and Sundays so I didnt get to try it :( The Barbacoa taco was delicous! It came with 2 tortillas, which is great because your taco doesnt fall apart. The toppings were yummy too (tomato, cilantro, onion, cabbage). The Pibil pork taco was ok. They gave me this big hunk of meat and didnt shred it up so I had to tear it apart to be able to eat it. But it didnt have much flavor and I didnt like it that much. The rice and beans were also ok. The beans almost tasted like they were from a can and they had this weird orange tint to them suggesting they were from a can. My husbands torta was ok. It was mostly bread, meat and beans. Im used to tortas having lettuce, tomato, avocado, onion, meat and beans so this torta was pretty disappointing. The Watermelon agua fresca was really tasty! It was delicous and makes me want to try their other agua fresca flavors. If I did come back I would stick to just eating the Barbacoa tacos. Everything else was just ok. I would probably try another taco place before I came back here though.

Just visited this place for the first time a few days ago after hearing people rave about it and it being on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. The guys at the counter were very nice and helpful. I ordered a tostado which is quite small, but it really did fill me up! It was super yummy and the spicy sauce was perfect to go along with it. The counter is literally a bus so I thought that was very creative and cute! Great place to go with a good group of friends. :)

My only complaint was at the beginning of my visit; the line was long and only one person was a cashier. USF students do get 10% off though, which is definitely a plus! I ordered the Torta sandwich with carne asada. Their meat was really flavorful, and I enjoyed cabbage on my sandwich rather than lettuce. My friend also got guacamole with her meal that was rather good. I also got watermelon Agua Fresca. It was like grinding up a watermelon and drinking it, and I liked it. I didn't order any of their vegan and vegetarian options, but they had a large variety which was impressive. Also had gluten-free options! I will definitely come back.

I would like to start my 1st yelp review ever with Taco bus, one of my faves! Being a local I find myself here at least a couple times a month at the minimum. Craving their shrimp quesadillaThis indoor location by USF gives a different vibe compared to the original location on Hillsborough Ave (served litterally out of a bus) but don't doubt the food still taste delicious! Green sauce or Red sauce still got 'em both! :)

Hooray, Taco Bus next to USF! Although it doesn't quite have the charm of serving from an old bus, it serves the same delicious food! Good prices, the only thing is it gets pretty busy in there and it can be hard to find a good seat to dine in. But I have to say, the staff are all friendly and very prompt considering the volume of customers and orders. Kudos! Because it is close to campus, my boyfriend and I fear going there too much. :)

It pains me a bit to rate the Taco Bus so low. I have always loved the original location and it's third world feel and charm. However they did this to themselves by taking one of their successful restaurants, Taqueria Monterrey, and re-branding it to a Taco Bus. I have no choice but to compare the two. Here is a list of things wrong here; -Uncomfortable seating unless you're lucky enough to get a booth. -Food served on disposable plates with plastic flatware. -Overpriced food for what it is. I paid $14 + tip for two tacos with beans, rice and a tea. Granted I had sour cream and guac on the tacos it should not have raised it up that much. -The tip should be a dollar or less for the amount of service provided. Your food gets dropped off at the table and nothing more. -The staff seemed to always be in the way when walking around and not stepping aside for their patrons. Here are the things that were right; -The food tasted fine. -Since it's counter service you could leave promptly. Things I miss from my beloved Taqueria Monterrey; -The fresh salsa bar with pickled onions, radishes, limes and more. -The chips and fire roasted salsa. -The MENU. -The table service and the friendly faces. -More comfortable seating. -The prices. #GoodByeOldFriend

I've eaten at this location on two occasions. The first time the service and food wasn't that great but it wasn't that bad either. I decided to try them again last night, I ordered online, and paid online. When I got to the restaurant they had no record of my order. I had to reorder and pay AGAIN. Come to find out that my order was ready the whole time, now it's time for a refund... The people in this store barely speak English and it took almost and hour and a half to process my debit card refund. Then they would not remake my order so I paid for and left with cold food. On our way out I was refilling my drink when one of the employees tells my girlfriend "hurry you guys up. We closing. You have leave." I will never waste my time with these people again. The staff doesn't speak English and are rude, not to mention, they have no clue what they're doing. The food is mediocre AT BEST. Try Taco Sun *Honest, non-biased review*

Get here before 11:30a to avoid the lunch rush! When I left the line was almost out the door! Like others, I am a fan of the Taco Bus and this opening does not dissapoint. The staff was friendly (albeit a little stressed on their second day) and the food is what you would expect. GREAT! Fresh cilantro, onions, leafy greens and the famous "GREEN SAUCE" was abound. I had the Conchita Burrito. It was very good and came with rice and beans. The large soda is really big. Unless you love soda, get the smaller sized as the larger is a bladder buster/kidney killer! The biggest gripe I heard was the removal of the salsa bar. While it seems like the salsa bar doesn't fit with the Taco Bus menu, it was revered by the Taco Monterrey fans. I would like to see it come back, however I am very happy they are finally open!

I was a little disappointed with this restaurant, perhaps this is not the best location? My sister and I ordered the shrimp quesadilla and the vegetarian burrito. They were both big, and fresh, but lacked some flavor. I also though, my burrito at least, was a tad overpriced. Service was very friendly though. Perhaps we tried the wrong items, but the food here didn't seem any different from any other Mexican fast food establishment I have visited (no I am not talking about Taco Bell).

Yum-o! I went here with Jay D. in a random craving for burritos. We both got the Burrito Prenado, and I got mine with Pollo Verde Desebrado (which I highly recomend). I'm a huuuuuuuuuge fan of salsa verde, so to see salsa roja AND salsa verde on the tables earned this place some bonus points for me. Back to the burrito, it's enormous. The cilantro is wonderful and fresh and the peas and carrots??? a surprise of sweetness, unexpected and tasty. Despite the hearty portions, save room for the tres leches. I'd go back, for sure.

I am a huge fan of the original Taco Bus. I decided to try this location out for the first time , let's just say that I should have driven the extra 10 minutes to go to the original. The place is clean with a friendly staff. The food is good but not like the original. i ordered a chicken taco along with the steak taco, both were warm ,the steak was a bit tough. And of course the sauces are YUMMY. I went there around 11:30 a.m. and it was just in time for the lunch crowd.I will try this location again since i am driving from Lutz.

A step far beyond chipotle, but my meat was sorta dry both times. The recipes seemed great, pretty authentic, but I don't really expect perfection. Also, the portions are huge! When I have gotten food from here in the past I can live off of it for days!

Overhyped; food is mediocre at best. My boyfriend and I went here today for the first time since all we heard were raves. I ordered a quesadilla with pollo verde; he ordered a burrito penado with the same filling. My quesadilla was bland and flavorless. They served it to me without it being cut first, so I had to eat it with a knife and a fork because picking it up was impossible; the tortilla was too flimsy. It also had the least amount of cheese I have ever seen on a quesadilla. They put maybe a 1/4 cup of cheese on the entire thing, and it was completely tasteless. The chicken was nice and tender but this green sauce that they spoke of was barely there. Underseasoned to the max. Edible, surely, but not good. His burrito was drowning in cilantro. It was awful and overpowering. The taste of everything else was 100% 'meh'. The burrito was a decent size but when you may as well be chewing on wallpaper for all the taste you get, it's not really worth it. The prices are way too high. We paid $18.00 for the two of us and that was with a USF discount. I should've had leftovers for what I paid, and I didn't. The wait was ridiculous for a place that wasn't even busy--fifteen minutes! There was one person ahead of us and that was it. I'm glad I wasn't in a hurry because these cooks sure aren't. The bathrooms were clean, I'll give it that. But when we got there all the tables spare one were dirty. It wasn't until we'd been sitting down a good five minutes that someone came and wiped them off, and I think that was only because someone complained. I became very ill after eating here, although my boyfriend seems to be okay. Maybe it was just bad luck on my part. Maybe the original Taco Bus is better; I don't know. I miss the Taqueria Monterrey that used to be here; they had much better food, although they had anemic service. Too long; didn't read: PROS: Clean bathrooms Discount for USF students Chicken was tender CONS: Extremely bland food Stingy with cheese, particularly on quesadilla Long wait, even if not busy Pricy for a taco joint Dirty tables VERDICT: I will not be returning.

    (1)
  • Hillary V.

Taco Bus is just a huge hype over nothing great. The chicken is disgusting and low quality, the wait time is horrible, and the staff doesn't understand what you are saying. Not my favorite. Its honestly nothing special, but if you're into low quality and cheap food, then go ahead and try it.

  • Sarah B.

My coworkers and I were frequent patrons of Taqueria Monterrey, so we were anxious to try out the Taco Bus when it reopened this week. (It has taken me 6 months to log in online and post this.) Upon entering, I was charmed by the built in school bus ordering window, but couldn't help to notice that my beloved salsa bar was gone. The staff has been completely replaced, which is unfortunate, although the new staff seemed friendly enough. The menu, too, was void of suizas and the pirata, my favorite menu items. I ordered the tacos (pollo verde and carne asada) with rice and beans instead. It was all OK, but in general I thought it could've used more flavor. I'm sure the place will be successful due to location and reputation, but I don't think rebranding was a step in the right direction. I miss my old lunch stop so much that my husband and I went out of our way to hit up the Taquerria Monterrey that is still open in Plant City. It was great for a fix, but it's not convenient and I really miss the old place. I'm still on the hunt for a replacement Mexican restaurant in the USF area.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
