Decor, ambiance and personnel = 4 stars Food = 2 stars (I'm being generous) thus the 3 stars average. This restaurant is nicely decorated and the people there are very nice. They are trying hard to create a 'Chipotle' style ordering system, and that's where things fall apart. Despite their signs, the ordering process is very confusing. Unfortunately the food is not very good either. Their meats are average, and the rest (ex. vegetables) aren't particularly fresh. It's probably due to a low food turn over. The young lady working there seemed quite apologetic about the whole thing. I really hope they can improve the food because it's quite a nice place.

I had the rice bowl with steak. Even though the containers were empty, they brought out fresh. Added to the beef was onions and peppers, cucumber, peanuts, Thai onions. I chose the peanut sauce mixed with the Chinese BBQ. It was very good. I also had a side of red chili sauce for heat. The Tom Ka Gai soup was Ok with a little chicken and mushrooms. Thai tea topped it off for a dinner of $12!!

Think Chipotle but with asian food. Excellent food and great selection. Quick and less than $7 for a filling customized meal. You will find something you like here. Inside is nicely decorated and clean which is always a plus.

Delicious freaking food and 10 star service! Such nice old men who are brothers who run this place!

I saw another review that referenced Sate as an "Asian Chipotle", and I agree completely with the description. You have an option of rice, noodles, salad, or sandwich. Then you have a choice of meat (or tofu), veggies, and some other toppings. I tried the egg roll which was pretty delicious (and they fried it on spot, which was nice - extra crisp/fresh - not sure if that was coincidence because they happened to be out, or if they always do that, but either way it tasted pretty good). I also got Thai tea ($2, free refills) which was pretttty good, not overly sweet, and add your own cream ~ to taste, which is nice. Will definitely return. Wish they had the option of brown rice; maybe they'll offer it if more people want it. :) Clean, quiet, comfortable chairs.

The best experience ever...... As soon as I walked in, Chris welcomed me in, and asked if it was my first time here, and my answer was yes. He explained the whole process and we were off with the rice bowl. Took the chicken teriyaki, with all the veggies, and the teriyaki sauce. Now the food was in terms of flavor was rich, and it tasted so good, I am not sure if it was the hunger speaking but the taste lingered in my mouth for quiet some time. I was the only one there on a Sunday lunch time, the second customer of the day. Other than that decor inside is quiet good, nice ambience.

I was in the neighborhood and decided to get some take out for lunch. I ordered three dishes; shrimp pad thai, garlic rice and a dish with coconut milk, bamboo shoots and shrimp. All three were just ok, nothing special. I will probably try it once more. I gave them an extra star for having such a nice helpful hostess.

We came here for dinner on a Sunday night around 8:30pm because of all the great reviews and what a disappointment! We didn't get our food until 9:20pm! The garlic chicken did not look like the picture and had burnt scraps in it from the wok. They forgot the rice for my tofu dish, and the weirdest thing was there were the fancy plates and glasses came with flimsy plastic utensils!!! Never again! The policemen that came in a few minutes after us waited just as long and had to get their food to go! Wow Sate!

One of the few places around USF that actually serves fresh food! It's a lot like an "Asian chipotle" but their hot sauces are FAR hotter than the one at Chipotle. All the food, sauces, and soups are absolutely delicious!!! Definitely a quick favorite and for a great price. 8)

So I went back for the original Banh Mi and just like the BBQ version the day before it was fantastic. There were a couple new people working and the service remained just as good. They're doing it right there!

Great restaurant, the food is cheap I went during lunch and didn't spend more than $8 on food that I took home and ate again for dinner. The staff is also very friendly, you must try.

I was looking for a good Asian place in Tampa for lunch, and a quick Yelp search brought this up. The owner greeted us upon our entrance - he's very friendly! The place was empty on a Sunday at 5:00 p.m., though I'm guessing it'll be busier when College is back in session. It's exactly what everyone has said it is: an Asian equivalent of Chipotle. I had a salad with chicken, corn, carrots (Viet style, my favorite!), bean sprouts (kimchi?), cucumbers (also kimchi?), and the peanut sauce. The food was fresh and delicious! The owner did mention that they're changing up the menu next week (I saw pad thai and other dishes on it), and although I'm not sure how that will be, it looks like it'll be great! All in all, based off of the current selections, I recommend giving this place a try if you're looking for some fresh Asian fusion.

I love this place, the manager and owner are both exceptionally friendly, and always greet you when you walk in. The food is really good and you get a lot for the price. One thing to be aware of is to watch out for the spiciness, as even their mild tends to give a little kick (its not red pepper its actually white pepper). Overall a great place for a quick bite.

If you're ever in this area, you need to try this place at least once. The food is delicious and authentic. It's nice and clean. There is also free wifi, student discounts and large high wooden tables not to mention Pandora and flat screens

I enjoy coming to Sate because the food tastes great constantly every time. The people that prepare the food do their best to keep everything fresh even when they're not busy. I enjoy the tofu salad bowl paired with unlimited Thai tea. I always feel good after eating there because I can eat healthy that's packed with flavor. Also, I like that they are involved digitally through digital media. Consumers can download the belly app in order to get free stuff for being loyal customers. Already been there twice and I qualify for a free spring roll or Thai tea. The food is affordable, although their subs are pricier than what I'm used to. But they do have USF student 10% discount and free Wifi. Overall, cool eating/eating hang out place. It's that simple.

I discovered Sate through CarlosEats a few months back. After a couple dozen visits it's easy to say I have become a regular. It has a Chipotle vibe to it but with South East Asian food. What I enjoy most are the cheap prices and the customization the menu allows. My goto choice is a noodle bowl with Sate bbq pork (best meat on the menu imo), thai cucumber, charred corn, carrots & radishes, grilled onions and peppers, spicy chili sauce, and black pepper garlic sauce. The Sate Sandwich is also amazing. The vibe is very chill and relaxed. It would definitely be a great place to study with such a close proximity to USF. They also offer unlimited refills of Thai Tea and Thai Coffee which I have never found at any Asian restaurant. Only $2 as well. Can't beat that. Boba is hit as well. Strawberry and Chai are the best Boba flavors and all Boba shakes are made with real in-season fruit as well. If you're in the USF area I highly recommend giving Sate a try. You won't regret it.

Lobster was great --- so was the Tuna "Tartar" in the sesame seeds. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT order spring rolls if they are meant for vegetarian or vegan friends. They smell and taste like they were fried in "old" oil which was used to fry Pork Egg rolls or other rolls with meat items. The wrap was more "beige" as a result. Not fresh - Maybe because I ordered late in the day? Also, where were the "Asian" veggies? I did get broccoli but I got a whole tomato sliced (why?), no mushrooms (shitake or American), no water chestnuts and 2 or 3 snow peas and maybe 4 bamboo shoots. Maybe next time, I can order just several orders of the lobster alone and the Tuna at a discount price and make my own Asian veggies. Rice was OK.

Fell in love on my first visit. Food is delicious. Large portion. Clean restaurant. Friendly staff. What more can i ask for? Oh, right. They got Boba too! The way the staff described it to me was, its the asian food version of Chipotle. You pick a dish, and you add to it down the line, they have tons of options.

Great for a healthy lunch their food is always fresh. Give it a little time as they grill your food right there. Empty so often I wonder why they are not packed like chipotle... I recommend the salad with grilled pork and fish sauce dressing. Don't forget to try all of their pickled veggies! Tell your friends!

Sate is a great place for some Vietnamese and mixed southeast Asian cuisine! You start off by choosing a base for the bowl such as rice or noodles. And from there you choose your meat (tofu as well), veggies, and type of sauce. The servers really pack in a lot if food for what you pay, so it's worth the money spent. My only issue was the quality of the food itself. For me it actually varies.. Sometimes the food sitting looks fresh and tasty! And sometimes the food looks like it's been sitting out for way too long. Sate also uses the Belly reward system which I think is pretty cool. Each time you go, you scan you Belly reward card (given at the register) and receive points that can be redeemed for incentives such as a free soup, appetizer, etc. The reward system gives you a fair amount of points each time you go, giving you the opportunity of choosing your reward.

I had Pho with beef and it was fantastic! It has elegant decor and the staff (and the owner) was very friendly and attentive. The service was a little slow but I will definitely go back!

Just went back recently for a banh mi to discover that they have a totally new concept. Now it's focused on make-your-own stir fries based on specific entree templates. I've tried the garlic pepper tofu with jasmine rice and the pad thai with tofu. Both were very good. The flavors were spot on with the garlic pepper tofu, and there was a delightful melange of vegetables. The pad thai was also good. I ordered it Thai Hot and wish it had a bit more spice, but I also have the spice tolerance of a flying hippo. They were very accommodating when I asked for broccoli to be added, and it was chock full of tasty tofu. I think that maybe a bit more seasoning would have been helpful, as it seemed to be missing something. They did not make it overly sweet or ketchup-colored which is exactly what I wanted. I have a strong aversion to syrupy sweet pad thai. I recommend checking out their new concept. The food is super fresh and affordable!

  • Catherine W.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. I got pad thai for take-out and made it spicy, and although it was super delicious, the noodles I guess were so thick they absorbed all of the sauce so by the time I got home to eat it, it was pretty dry. I think that if I ate it right then and there in the restaurant, it would have been perfect. I liked the idea of the unlimited Thai iced tea and would sit in just for that. The dining area looks super fancy for a place in that location, so I would do date night there too.

So they totally changes the set up! No longer is it like Chipotle where you can mic and totally customize. Everything is preset like a chinese restaurant! Not happy!!!

I was looking forward to my standard lunch and to my great surprise their menu has changed. No longer do they have grilled chicken or beef or any sandwiches. The menu on their website does not reflect the current menu. That being said, I didn't leave but I just wanted a fresh roll and some Tom Yum shrimp soup. They were able to accommodate me. The fresh roll was good with a fine peanut sauce and the soup was just meh. It only had a few sliced mushrooms, two smallish shrimp and some cilantro stems and the broth was a bit thin. I will say that their new menu items looked good. They have the basic Thai curries and noodle dishes. The portion sizes looked ample. I will have to stop by when I'm next at the USF campus to try one of the new dishes. I didn't want anything too heavy that particular day. They seem to be gearing up for more dinner business with a vast variety of dishes that they never had before like Lobster and Snapper dishes. Perhaps they should change the name of their restaurant and omit the "Sate".

Sate is very good and inexpensive. It's great for lunch, particularly on Wednesdays when you can get three meals for $20, which actually isn't that big of a savings because everything on that menu is between 7 and 9 dollars. The cuisine is marketed as thai/vietnamese, with the thai flag or the vietnamese flag next to each item indicating to which country the dish belongs. You choose which entree you would like and then choose your meat (chicken, tofu, shrimp or beef) and then you say how hot you want it on a scale of one to four. One not at all and four the hottest. They have a chef's special menu which I haven't tried because it is a bit more pricey ($12 to $30), but if you stick to the standard menu you get a lot of bang for your buck. My favorites on the menu are thepanang curry, the the stir fried egg noodle, the garlic fried rice and the pad thai. They're all equally delicious and they don't mind throwing in a few extra veggies every now and again. Also, the thai tea is wonderfully rich and almost decadent. It's $3 and free refills. When you order they give you an option of how spicy you want it, from not at all to "thai hot". Don't be intimidated though: if you are acquainted with Asian peppers and you like spicy food it's not very hot at all. I actually added siracha to my "thai hot" curry. The waiter told me it's as hot as they could get away with. The atmosphere is nice. Very clean. I think they have the music on a "college alternative" station on spotify. Most of the staff do not speak english very well, unless you get the young man, but they are all very nice and eager to please.

Yesterday marked our third trip to Sate. Each time we have ordered the same thing. Sate is all about customization. It is like the Asian version of Chipotle. You, the customer, get to dress your Asian bowl (or Banh Mi) in whatever style you desire. Sate has five or six large boards posted above the counter. Here is where your customization begins. The first board provides you with your base options. You can go Jasmine Rice, Vermicelli Noodle or a Spring Salad if you are looking at a bowl. You could also go with the Sate Sandwich if you want to try out a Banh Mi. J-Fur went with her staple base of Vermicelli Noodle. I went with my staple base of everything is better on bread. On the next board you have your meat options: For vegetarians, your choices are pretty slim. You can have tofu basted in a garlic black bean sauce or you can have none of the above (other options include chicken, steak, BBQ Pork or shredded pork). Both of us went with the tofu. One of the customers in line told the man making his bowl, "I came for the tofu. It is the best in the city." It seemed, at least in this guy's mind, we were in good hands. The next board lists your choices of veggies. These include Vietnamese pickles, Asian herbs, Thai cucumber (not vegetarian because it is cooked in fish sauce), spicy bean sprouts, spicy charred corn and grilled peppers and onions. Finally you top your meal off with a sauce of your choice. There are six options total, only three work for vegetarians. These are BBQ glaze, Peanut and Thai Satay. The final area offers toppings like jalapenos, cilantro, sesame seeds, crushed peanuts, crispy Asian onions, fresh tomatoes, lettuce and more. First we ripped into J-Fur's vermicelli noodle bowl. She filled it with noodles, tofu, cucumber, charred corn, peppers and onions, lettuce, tomatoes and daikon. On the side we had cilantro (for her) and spicy bean sprouts (for me). The Thai Satay, which is a sunflower based sauce, worked the best with the noodles and fresh vegetables. She loved the flavors and textures that blended seamlessly in the bowl. These included the crispness of the vegetables, the slight pickling of the daikon, the hint of garlic and black bean from the tofu and the spicy charred corn. Oh that corn. She went on and on about the sweet and salty that flowed through those kernels. The dish had a little bit of everything: sweet, sour, salty, spicy. And, more importantly, it had too much of nothing. The flavors were blended in a way that only a true food artist could. The noodles and bowl were great and all but through and through I am a sandwich guy. Just as long as the sandwich is good. I guess I'd be more like a "craft sandwich" guy. When I found out a few years back that Asian cuisine had a sandwich called a Banh Mi, I literally cried. It was the one style of food that had never been able to fulfill my craft sandwich addiction. Sate's Banh Mi begins with a fresh baguette toasted in their mini toaster oven. It is then layered with tofu cubes. I added daikon, spicy sprouts, charred corn, onions and peppers and sesame seeds. As a sauce I chose the BBQ glaze. I loveded the kick of pickled vegetables, subtle sweetness of the tofu, the slight saltiness of the BBQ sauce and the spiciness of the bean sprouts. It is, hands down, one of the best sandwiches I've had recently. If you are an Asian food fan, I implore you to go here and give it a try. See if it works for you. And with all the customizations available, I don't see how it couldn't.

I believe that the chipotle fusion style has been popping up rapidly. I've seen chipotle style sushi and now it's an Asian fusion. Sate Southeast Asian Grill has dishes from Vietnamese, Thai to Korean. They offer base dishes that consist noodles, rice, banh mi and salads. I enjoyed my meal here at Sate and the service was pretty good. I had a young gentlemen put my meal together and I could see how innocently hard he tried to sale me (help me choose) the many choices of sides. I wasn't a big fan of the spring rolls or soups but with the right combination you'll find the delicious meal combo. They also offer student discounts of USF students should take up the deal and come get an Asian fusion food without the wait. The meals are cheap and there are many combinations to create.

It's my first time here. The food is good but the service is really bad. I waited for almost 30 mins for my order, and when it came out it was the wrong one! They mixed up nearly everyone's order, and u see plates moving from one table to another! They need to better manage their service for their "fast casual lunch" concept to succeed!!!

My fiancé order mild curry Panang tofu and I order medium pad Thai with spring roll sidekick and Thai tea. Our food was good but her mild Panang curry was way too spicy, barely edible!! I love my medium pad Thai....I want to come back here but my fiancé doesn't, so that is a no :(

I'm not big on Asian food so I may not be the best judge. It was decent. Will I be back? Probably not. Went through the line to pick out my meal. The staff was very helpful making suggestions and being patient since it was my first time. I had a bowl with noodles, grilled chicken and some of the veggies and sauces that the staff recommended. It was spicier than I expected and the noodles and most of the toppings were chilled. Not sure if that is supposed to be the case or not. My dining companion loves Asian/Thai/etc and he enjoyed his meal. Overall, it was fine but just not my bag. The price was very good. Lunch was under $7, which is a win for me. The location is good and right in the same strip plaza as First Watch, Five Guys, Sweetbay, etc. Parking can be tough during lunch. The inside of Sate was very nice. Clean with dark wood and a good array of seating options.

Decided to try something new tonight and glad I did. The restaurant is very welcoming and clean. The menu is easy to read and the employees are very helpful. The owner asked if it was my first time and I said yes. I mentioned I liked spicy and he made several recommendations. It was much appreciated. The value for what you get is fantastic. $6-7 for a fresh, tasty meal is well worth it. I tried the Thai tea, wasn't a fan, but at least I tried it. I look forward to a return visit. I think they should add some music as it was very quiet.

Okay, you all know I love food, right? Cause, well, I do. Also, Asian food. Om nom nom! So when my neighbors dropped in and asked if we wanted to go check out the new Asian place up the road I was totally in - and so glad I did! The place is new. Open only for ten days or so they are offering a 15% discount for anyone that comes in (can't remember how long it lasts). So, pros: - It's _so clean_ (restrooms and all!) - It was less than $7.00 with food, drink and tax! - Lots of choices - Food tastes fantastic! - Employees are friendly and eager - The decor is fun (look at the items on the wall and how they're built- it's pretty cool) - The food mixes Thai, Korean and Vietnamese flavors for a great meal - They have Thai tea to pour from a tea jug and don't add the 1/2 and 1/2 for you! (As a vegan this is a huge plus!) The _only_ con I can bring up is that they have no beer/wine license, but we brought that up to the owner last night and he said something like, "I'll do it if I know people want it!" We definitely let him know how much it was be appreciated. This is kind of like an Asian version of Chipotle, if that makes sense. Pick your starch (rice or noodles), meat (or tofu), veggies on top and then a sauce (the garlic pepper one is great). Additionally they have spring rolls (fried and fresh), tom yum, tom kha, etc. I suggest checking this place out. Please! I want to get the name out there and keep them in business (man am I selfish?). This could easily become my favorite quick stop for food (and it means I can convince the Mr. to go somewhere other than Chipotle!).

The question is WHY! Why change what made SATE different from the other Asian restaurants. I have been here 3 times since they changed the menu and all three times the food was barely ok. Today I tried the Pad Thai. I was charged an extra buck for shrimp. But there were only 6 shrimp. The curry with chicken as the protein was marginally better. Unfortunately, both dishes were really boring and tasted cheap. There is absolutely no reason to go here. With so many other Asian restaurants offering a better selection and quality of dishes. Please return to what SATE different. After years of being one of my favorites, I am sad to say I can not justify returning anymore. Even the Thai ice tea was weak and lacked much flavor.

Really yummy! My boyfriend and I don't eat meat and we had lots of options. We both got the pad thai and if you get Thai spicy its really spicy! Very cheap for lunch, 7.50 for nice non-strip mall pad thai with tofu and they added broccoli for free! We had leftovers too. Customizable, fairly quick, and pretty decor. Definitely check it out. Especially if you're a vegan or vegetarian.

I'd estimate my boyfriend and I have been coming here about once every two weeks since we found out about this place in April. The food quality is consistent and the service is very friendly and efficient. I'm pretty sure the owners recognizes me now because every time I walk in I'm greeted with a friendly "Hello! Tofu?" To which I reply with an enthusiastic yes. The addition of boba to the menu and the rewards card tells me that the owner really listens to his customers. My only wish is that there was a soy milk option for the Thai tea and blended boba drinks. But other than that, this place is pretty much perfect.

This is an update. They've changed their menu. It's easier to order but the selections are pretty bland and a little pricier. I've stuck it out since the beginning but I think I'm giving up. I could tolerate the eternally slow service when they had more interesting stuff like the ban mi but not for a bland version of Thai.

Living near and working at USF, I am always interested in new places that pop up in the area. We'd driven past Sate a couple times, but when my husband's co-worker recommended it, we decided to go ahead and give it a try. As the previous reviewer mentioned, the place is spotlessly clean and the decor is simply lovely. I love the Asian aesthetic, and it adds a real air of class and style to an establishment that is basically serving excellent quick food. I had the chicken skewers with peanut sauce, and it was absolutely tasty! The pickled veggies on top with crisp and a great complement to the entree. As an extra treat, you also get a couple yummy little shrimp crackers. As if good food wasn't enough, their Thai iced tea is fantastic! And you get FREE refills! That alone was enough to make me squee with delight! Those of you who have USF ID's will also be pleased to know that you'll receive a 10% discount. The staff there is super friendly and aims to please! Aside from good food, good service is the other thing that I look for in eateries, and Sate delivers on that in spades! I sincerely hope that this little gem is here to stay for a good long while, because we will certainly be frequenting it.

I love the idea of build-your-own style restaurants. You know, places like Chipotle and the now deceased Dish (let's have a moment of silence, please). When I found out about Sate Southeast Asian Grill, I knew I would be a fan. Not only because of the creative concept, but because of the fresh options I had heard about through some friends. And fresh they are! When you first walk in, the aroma from the grill hits your nostrils, making your mouth water. In fact, the first thing you see as you walk up to the counter is a hot, flaming grill going to town on chicken skewers and grilled steak. Sorry, vegetarians, but the smell of meat on the grill makes my heart go pitter patter. Never to fear, though, there are plenty of vegetarian options here at Sate! I brought my friend Monica, from Sweetbitesblog.com to check out Sate with me. The staff immediately greeted and welcomed us as we started to browse the menu and the area behind the counter, mentally constructing our bowls. As you begin to build your meal, you start by choosing a base. Sate offers rice, noodles, salad or a bread (sandwich) base. I kept it simple for my first visit and went with the rice, but I cannot wait to return to try a sandwich! Once you choose your base, it's time to decide on your protein. You can choose between grilled chicken strips, grilled steak, chicken Satay (chicken skewers), tofu, shredded pork and sesame bbq pork. I decided that the chicken Satay looked much too delicious to pass up, so I went with that, while Monica went with the shredded pork. The gentleman creating my order went straight to the grill and pulled 2 skewers right off of it, and straight onto my bowl. Like I said, FRESH! The pork looked fork tender and was drenched in a broth that would probably be good enough to drink. Once you've chosen your protein, then the fun really begins. Sate has a cornucopia of fresh vegetables, sauces and toppings to add some pizzazz to your creation. I added grilled onions, bean sprouts, fresh cilantro, jalapenos and topped it with Sate's signature fish sauce. As you watch your creation slide down the counter to the cash register, you momentarily become distracted with, what Sate calls, "side kicks". Beautifully wrapped spring rolls, hot soups, and crispy egg rolls tempt your taste buds as you wait to cash out. Today I stuck with just my bowl, but I have to say, I will be back for a soup sampling! To wash it all down, you can choose Thai Lemonade, Thai Iced Coffee, Thai Iced Tea, Vietnamese coffee, soft drinks, water and/or regular iced tea. I knew I had to try the iced coffee, as it's one of my all time favorite drinks. For $2.00 with unlimited refills, these people had me at hello. For around $8-9, you get a HUGE bowl filled with fresh ingredients, that you created yourself, plus unlimited gourmet iced beverages. That, my friends, is a steal. I didn't know how to tackle my meal, so I started by trying one of the chicken satay. Moist and flavorful with a nice char on the outside, and a smokiness on the inside. Dipped in the fish sauce took it over the top with flavor. I then began to combine my rice and veggies with the remaining chicken from the second skewer creating a rich and fresh bowl that I found difficult to not feel guilty eating! I had to keep reminding myself that nothing was fried or drenched in cheese or butter, but it was still just as satisfying as any comfort food I've eaten. The Thai iced coffee was earthy and rich, and with refills being free, I took one for the road. Monica agreed that her bowl was equally amazing, and could not get over how farm fresh everything tasted. Although it's set up cafeteria style, and the drink areas are self serve, we were approached by staff twice to see how our meals were and if we needed anything. One of those visits was by a member of management who talked to us a little about how everything is made in house, and how we must come back to try some side kicks and the Vietnamese coffee. The next time you're looking for something different, check out Sate. It's a Asian fusion, casual dining and quick service restaurant that you'll feel good about eating at. Happen to be a USF student? Sate offers a discount with a valid student ID! Yelper? Check in at Sate for 15% off your meal. Even better... bring 6 or more guests with you at check-in and your meal will be free! Gotta love Yelp deals! :) Have you tried Sate Southeast Asian Grill? What do you think of these fast casual dining options popping up everywhere?

It is a clean modern establishment, fusion style of Asian food, the portion are big, and the server behind the counter was going out of his way to explain the ordering concept, I ordered the steak Thai satay, the meat was tender and delicious, but the meal itself, lacked the real taste of the satay you have in a good Thai restaurant. I guess, if are new to the Asian food craze, that's a good place to start. As for me, I will pass.....

Southeast Asian food the Chipotle/Subway way. Great idea that works. Good for them. Good Southeast Asian food. Check. Nice ambient and decor. Check. Good prices. Check. Tried the noodle bowl with both the curry sauce and the traditional sauce. Very good. Tried the eggrolls. Very good. Tried the soups. Very good.

Very slow service, but the food was decent. A bit pricey compared to some other traditional asian spots to eat at, but still tasty nonetheless. I ordered a Traditional Banh Mi sandwich, because there are hardly any places around tampa that serve them! Thank goodness for Sate.

Food was good, but I wasn't blown away. I would probably go there again. Thai cucumbers are delish!

I would like to thank everyone that rated this place highly for fooling me. Much appreciated. I will begin with the positive. The people who were working there were very, very nice. They explained the whole place to me, but I'm sorry that is not enough. I went there for the food. Now either going on a Saturday at 7 p.m isn't the ideal time to get the tastiest and warmest food or everyone that has been here is clearly delusional. I was actually hesitating to order because I was alarmed at the way everything looked as if it had been sitting there for years but I went ahead and ordered. The flavor of the meat left much to be desired. The toppings were so-so. I was actually a bit saddened but kept ordering because I was determined to try it because of all these reviews. It was an excellent portion. It was lovely customer service. The food, the one thing I went there for, was definitely not doing it for me. It was cool, not even warm, flavorless, and just not what I expected. Probably never going there again. To add, I will say also that their BBQ sauce is good, but other than that I would probably never go again unless it is for the cheap Thai Tea.

The Asian Chipotle. I love the concept, but the execution still needs to be worked on. The food when I got it was delicious and tasted fresh and healthy. I like the fact that I could see them making the food and could dictate exactly what I wanted. The place is new and the owners are still working out the kinks, but I will definitely go again. I got one meal but it lasted for three separate meals. By the way, the price is unbelievable, I have never had such a cheap lunch before.

Supe good chicken and great customer service! They're just starting out so go easy on them but the food is awesome. Sauces could be a BIT more powerful since it's Thai but they still tasted good. And, self-serve Thai Tea, which I've never seen before but it was good and only $2.

I just tried this place today since I saw so many good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. The meal was good I got the vermicelli noodle with steak and peanut sauce. I definitely will come back since its so close to USF and it's super cheap and good foods.

I love Sate! We were definitely in need of some new restaurants in the USF area and Sate has it. Their Tom Khaa Soup is the best. One of the best soups I've ever had!!! The concept is simple, it's fast, and easy. It's great for any student or busy person on the go. I also can't argue with the price. It rounds up to six dollars and some change and you end up with a hearty serving of meat, rice, and veggies. Gotta love Sate, the new Chipotle!

Recently I came here with a coworker for lunch. The staff was very helpful explaining how the place works and how to order. The food is Asian fusion and super fresh and delicious. Not only that but it was cheap and they have Thai tea as a fountain drink option.

Wow Sate!

    (1)
  • Franco A.

Long wait times definitely contributed to this score. I believe that I noticed only one person managing about five tables. It didn't help that more people started showing up. Also, I think that the team needs to work together more. My friend ordered a salad that was not listed on the menu and it took some time for the waiter (because our original waiter went off to do something else) to find the price of the food to be able to present us with our check. We were there for about 2 hours and the wait time was a little under an hour due to this check payment issue and not enough attention. The food was good, not great however, I would return to give it another try if I have the opportunity. For now, two stars.

I am an unusual breed of Yelper. I do not like to go out of my comfort zone of food, which is mainly American and Americanized cuisine. However, I dabble outside of that zone now and again. So, when the fam was figuring out where to have lunch on a Sunday afternoon, I agreed to try Sate. I was trying to go with the flow, because it is very hard to find a place to eat that suits six people. Jennifer H. told me that the restaurant had recently undergone a change in structure. It had been a Chipotle-style place, where you could pick your ingredients and have the dish made along the way. When we arrived though, we were told to pick a dish off a laminated paper, where you chose the meat or tofu, rice or lo mein, and a few other options. You can also choose if you want the dish mild, medium, or hot. I will warn you, do not go here if you cannot handle the heat. The "mild" option is not what I have experienced as mild. I think four of us ordered our food to be mild, and we could barely handle the spiciness. Emilio M. informed me that Vietnamese food is usually spicy, but generally, mild means not very spicy. Not the case here. The service is also lacking. There is one cook, and one woman to run the cash register and bring out the food. We had a party of six, and it became a bit awkward when the food came out sporadically. Emilio M. got his food first, and he was going to wait until we all got our food, but we soon realized that could be awhile. Therefore, we all just started eating when our food arrived. I will also say that my family members preferred the way Sate used to be run. I cannot comment on that personally, but the feedback they gave was that the menu and setup was better before the change. I cannot conclude without saying that the cook/owner is very passionate about his food. All people in my party agreed that the chef had high expectations for his food. He was committed to producing high quality food, but it could be to his detriment. He was the only cook, and I think he could benefit from some assistance. My verdict is this: be prepared for spiciness and a wait time.

Excellent food; tasty and vivid. The owners are very friendly. I also really liked their thai tea -- the best l've ever had so far. Fantastic experience. Definitely going back there another time.

The food was wonderful, but the service was awful. The waiter forgot parts of the order. After 2 hours we still had not received all of our entrees.

Like an Asian Chipotle. Not bad! Fresh ingredients and made to order. I like it. I would go back. Friendly service, too.

This place use to be very good. After I have check back, the concept has change a lot. The previous concept has the customer select the meat, vege and sauce on the tray. Now you have to chose from the selection sheet. Although it is better to preserve the material in refrigeration, but it miss a lot of the previous original ingredient. The old Sarte has the crispy sausage fresh roll that I have miss due to discontinue. It still have the ice tea all you can drink. It also maintain the Tom Yum Soup and Fresh Roll. The food is brought to table after you have line up order front the counter. I always select the Thai hot level that I love, if you try very hot please be careful about the burning tongue. The service is good. The price is matching the quantities and quality of the food provided. The set up of the restaurant is modern look.

Service is great, atmosphere is great and the food is nice. Only problem is the mild phad thai was so sticky sweet with sauce. I enjoyed it for a little while until my palate got bored of the syrupy sweetness of the noodles and I was picking out the salty peanuts.

  • Shoba R.

My only gripe with this place is that the taste of the food is not always consistent. I've ordered their pad thai at least 5 time and it tasted different each time. I really want Sate to do well. The owners are extremely friendly and accommodating and they work really hard to keep this place going. They always ask for feedback on their food which is great. I dont usually see too many people when I go there which makes me a little sad cuz I feel like it at hidden gem in the USF area. The food is very cheap. Especially if you're a student and you're tight on money. The $2 Thai tea with unlimited refills is hard to beat. I also love their spring rolls and peanut sauce. Probably the best spring roll prices around. The food usually comes out pretty quick, which is a plus. :)

Had a strange experience here. I went here for a late lunch around 3 PM and we were the only people here. It was a sort of awkward experience because there was only one employee and the chef who did not speak any English. It looked like a nicer place in the photos than it was in actuality but we still had very high expectations for the food. We ordered a pad thai and a fried rice. We really enjoyed the fried rice but could not finish even half of the pad thai. It was extremely sweet to the point where it was unenjoyable. We were too embarrassed to leave it at the restaurant I also ordered the thai tea because so many people in the reviews talked about it. It was more expensive than it said on Yelp (I think it was $3 with unlimited refills.) It was extremely sweet as well and sort of made my stomach sick. I will most likely not return because we had higher expectations for the food, especially the pad thai, which we were let down about

*ABUSIVE MESSAGES FROM OWNER INCLUDED* Third Edit: The food is just as good as the customer service. ALL FOOD IS HANDLED BY CUSTOMERS AND STAFF ALIKE. BUFFET = TOGO = DINE IN. More details to come. By the way, the ABUSIVE OWNER insulted my personal life and my intelligence through this site for voicing my opinion about the food. Started out as an ordinary two star review and has quickly descended into madness. Message from owner: "People already prove your [wrong] by giving my business 4 stars. This is a simple math, but you still can't figure out. What are you Eric? Just looked at the couple reviews recently, then you will see what the basic knowledge base you have. I start to feel sorry for you, who try to judge someone when you don't even have a basic and common sense... Your money is even bigger than the truck tires, then I suggest you do not to dine out, but cooking your great food at home so you can enjoy your outstanding skills. Wake up, smell a coffee and learn it from other people buddy. Otherwise, you will hurt yourself one day. Thanks and have a nice life!" You can see that the owner doesn't have very well connected thoughts. The food is just as good as the customer service. First Edit: demoted to one star after the owner messaged me to tell me I lacked knowledge of authentic Thai food. Okay, well I've been to good Thai restaurants and bad, and this is the latter. I've cooked my own panang curry from scratch as well as tried my hand at fresh rolls, pad Thai, green curry, and tom Kha and I know for a fact I can outcook you buddy. At the very least I know that jasmine rice should never be soggy and mushy. Rice noodles should have a tender texture, not a chalky texture. Edit Again: He messaged me a second time to reiterate I don't know anything about good Thai food. If you have time and money to waste, go here and prove my point for me. FOR THE RECORD - YOU ARE EATING BUFFET FOOD REGARDLESS OF WHERE YOU ORDER FROM. I WATCHED THEM FULFILL A TOGO ORDER WITH BUFFET FOOD - IT IS A VIOLATION OF HEALTH CODE TO NOT HAVE A SNEEZE SHIELD SEPARATING YOUR FOOD FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD - STAFF HAS LONG HAIR AND SO DOES THE FOOD, WHICH IS TOUCHED NOT ONLY BY THEM BUT BY RANDOM CUSTOMERS - FOOD QUALITY HERE IS ROCK BOTTOM ANYWAY SO THE ABOVE DOESN'T MATTER IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS. My original review: Cheap lunch, cheap quality food. I probably won't be back here so I'll never know what dinner is like, but I ordered to go lunch. It was not good food. All of the starches (jasmine rice, noodles) and most of the entrees were cooked improperly. I think this place needs to return to their basics. Jasmine rice - soggy Noodles - I think they were boiled instead of placed in warm water, so they were pretty soggy Panang curry - weird color / overcooked Tom kha - tasteless Fresh rolls - served hot Buffet - no sneeze shield. They don't even own a real buffet, just some kitchen pans on a countertop. HUGE Food / germ contamination risk, big time Just some things I noticed. This place has the start of some good ideas like unlimited Thai tea but they don't have their stuff together at all. College quality. Great prices.

    (4)

  • Marty C.

One of the few places around USF that actually serves fresh food! It's a lot like an "Asian chipotle" but their hot sauces are FAR hotter than the one at Chipotle. All the food, sauces, and soups are absolutely delicious!!! Definitely a quick favorite and for a great price. 8)

I come back to FL and the menu is completely different! No more Chipotle-style asian food but I actually like the new food items better! When you enter, you grab one of the lamented papers and mark your choices and specifications with a dry erase marker. Then you hand it to the cashier and pay. I got the pad thai with chicken and Penang curry with chicken. Both $7 each for lunch. The portions were very generous and the restaurant staff were very gracious. Food is on point , authentic and filling which is a recipe for me to come back! Also, unlimited Thai tea! I want to come back for dinner as they have an expanded menu and I even saw crawfish!

Ordered delivery. Everything was well prepared. Good portion size and well spiced. Delivery was pretty quick and the delivery person was very friendly. I will order again without a doubt. I ordered curry and larb gai. The larb in appearance was not what im used to but it was spot on in flavor. Its sad to see two recent less than stellar reviews one from someone who states that they dont care for unamerican food...but complains about the spice. FYI thai is notoriously spicy. Another complained about overcooked buffet food, well the nature of a buffet, the food sits and can become overcooked. If one is sensitive to texture its a good idea to order go with fresh over cheap. Ive had Thai food in four other countries and many cities across the US and I can say that with regard to flavour this is consistent of many others Ive tried and certainly for the price this was good.

I wasn't quite sure what you expect of Sate when I first arrived. It was a spur of the moment decision to eat there, but I'm glad we did. It ended up being quite good food. I started out with tom yum kai (which I haven't had in a while) and ended with the garlic fried rice with shrimp. Both were good, but I really enjoyed the soup quite a bit. The atmosphere seemed to change a bit while we were there. At times, it was quiet and felt like a normal dine-in restaurant and seemed like a good date-night stop, while other times there were louder and more chatty customers that made it a little better suited for being out with friends rather than a significant other. Overall, the staff seemed nice and they did a good job with the decor (especially the tables).

Hmmm. I came to Sate before and we had to order kind of like chipolte style, but now it's all changed up. Though it's different I kind of like the new menu that they have! It's so customizable! You choose a style of food, I chose panang curry, then what kind of bed you want it on which was rice for me, and of course the meat which I chose chicken. It was very delicious! Was my first time having panang curry and it was so creamy and flavorful. My mom had the lemongrass shrimp which was pretty tasty too. To top it off we had a great waiter/server/person, his name is Jae! We received excellent service from him which really topped it off. Also price wise it was around 7ish to 10 per dish, not too expensive and you get a butt load of food! Pretty cool place tucked into that giant Winn-Dixie plaza. Check it out :P

A total hidden gem. You would never know that this awesome restaurant was hiding in this shopping center. The inside is beautiful, the service is fantastic, and the food is delicious. All four of us enjoyed our meals and would love to go back! I wish I lived in Tampa so I could stop in more often.

What a disappointment. ..I read good reviews and am a big fan of Thai food. This is not Thai food. I have 2 standard dishes I order when trying a new Thai food place and they are green papaya salad and panang curry. Both were bad and the panang was almost inedible. I really wanted to like here, the decor is cool and the concept is cool but the food is not on point. The thing about Thai food is the flavors should be balanced, there is an art to it. The som tum was just sweet, nothing else and had no dried shrimp or carrots or other traditional ingredients. The panang was actually flavorless (strange for any Thai food ) and smelled like dirty water from the bamboo shoots. Yes i eat a lot of Thai food and as well I have spent quite a bit of time in the kingdom and even went to cooking school in chang mai. I say this only so you know that i speak with some knowledge.

Stopped by for a quick lunch, I was happily surprised that it was not busy at all on a weekend. I didn't know what to order but the employee was very friendly and helpful. Here you are able to customize your meal you choose your protein, sauce, base and the heat. It may take a few minutes so on a busy day I would probably call ahead. They also have several appetizers to choose from. I would definitely go back my chicken dish was delicious but maybe a bit too spicy.

I always forget how good this place is until I am driving around, my belly monster roaring with hunger and trying to find something good to eat! Located in the same plaza as Winn Dixie, First Watch and Jason's Deli, Saté gets lost amongst its more popular neighbors. I have been here several times now and always had a great experience. The lunch menu is pretty cool. They have little laminated "menu cards" where you pick the dish you want then customize it by choosing the meat, veggies and rice combinations and at $8-11 the portion is very good. I always end up taking the Penang curry home with me and having it for lunch the next day. The other day I also tried that carmelized pork hotpot and the chicken larb! I was rather impressed at how good it all was. I ended up taking the leftovers home but they weren't that great the next day, so make sure you finish everything before you're ready to leave! This place is so convenient and affordable- definitely and awesome choice for any USF student looking for good asian (viet/ thai) cuisine!

I had Pho with beef and it was fantastic! It has elegant decor and the staff (and the owner) was very friendly and attentive. The service was a little slow but I will definitely go back!

Southeast Asian food the Chipotle/Subway way. Great idea that works. Good for them. Good Southeast Asian food. Check. Nice ambient and decor. Check. Good prices. Check. Tried the noodle bowl with both the curry sauce and the traditional sauce. Very good. Tried the eggrolls. Very good. Tried the soups. Very good.

Very slow service, but the food was decent. A bit pricey compared to some other traditional asian spots to eat at, but still tasty nonetheless. I ordered a Traditional Banh Mi sandwich, because there are hardly any places around tampa that serve them! Thank goodness for Sate.
