The first time that I went to Montauro was in March, 2012, about a month after my Italian grandmother died. The experience made me feel warm and happy because I felt like I was sitting in her house, eating her amazing food. It's possible that I actually cried when I left, feeling so nostalgic. My travel buddies agreed that it was delightful but I still wondered if my perspective and raw emotions made me feel more strongly about the meal than I would have otherwise. I put off reviewing it, waiting until I could be more honest. In March, 2013 we returned to Tampa. We had added 3 people to our group and decided to try Montauro again, remembering it fondly. I was right! This place is a gem! The menu is simple, only about 8-10 menu items, but they are hearty and made with love. Do not go here expecting pages of options, inventive Italian dishes or a trendy atmosphere. Go here and expect to be welcomed like you are an old friend by a member of the owner's family. Go here because you want a great value, filling no-frills Italian dinner. Go here because you never had an Italian grandmother and you want to know what it would have been like to sit at her table. But definitely GO HERE!! As previously mentioned by reviewers, the meal includes a salad, bread and a veal cutlet (delivered with the salad). The service is friendly, the sauce is homemade and they do not skimp on the cheese! It's BYOB so bring your own wine and plan to sit for a while and enjoy the company of your date, family or friends. If Montauro was in the town where I live, this is where i would go for casual comfort food.

Lunch Dec 29 Small mom and pop place that is a big favorite of many locals. The owners (Sid and Libby) do the cooking and even will come out to greet you. Don't go there expecting frills and a big show, just some good fresh homemade Italian food. Lunch menu is very simple: no appetizers, 7 dishes, no dessert. Prices were all $6 to $7 ....seriously! The value is tremendous, the amount of food plentiful, and it is very tasty. Huge tray of fresh cut Italian bread is brought out with large cup of marinara for dipping. Salad comes out on a full plate, with cheese, tomatoes, olives and a very flavorful homemade oil based Italian dressing. Half the plate is salad and half is a large, lightly breaded veal cutlet. Nice touch. --I was almost full from bread, salad & cutlet before my main entree even arrived. At our table we had Eggplant Parmesan, Ravioli, Lasagna, Penne w/Ricotta and Spaghetti w/meatballs. All portions were large and fresh. You could tell they were homemade and very fresh. The sauce was light and more creamy than tomato'ish. Also, the dishes were not over powered with garlic - as is the case in most Italian places, so eating here for lunch doesn't ruin your breath all day! I have had better Italian (Il Mullino's), but also paid much much more or it. Sid and Libby are very proud of their food and aim to please. If your on Dale Mabry around Raymond James Stadium area this is a great and economical place to enjoy a good Italian lunch.

The salad is a meal in itself; simple lettuce, tomato, cured olives and grated parm cheese with a vinaigrette dressing and a thin veal cutlet that covers the other half of a dinner plate. All fresh and tasty. Along with the bread and fresh marinara sauce, little room is left for an entree but do it anyway. Light fresh sauces and perfectly done pasta make each dish a pleasure. Small menu but well done overall. I'll be back as often as I'm looking for a great meal at a fabulous price. The Frank Sinatra music in the background made the mood mellow.

I've been going to Montauro's since i was a kid. For the local Tampa folks, you know it closed for several years, and then reopened. This is real Italian, but a real Italian family. Joe and Sal are the owners and great people. They will treat you like a part of their family. Make sure you try the Lasagna. It's BYOB, so bring a nice bottle of wine with you.

Went back after many years away from Tampa. Joey and his family are gracious hosts. A great home cooked Italian restaurant, and the salad with the veal cutlet is the best. So glad we were able to make it back after so many years, and hope to visit again when back in Tampa.

Our daughter has been in St. Joseph's children' s for over a week, and we were looking for a place close by. It is a little hard to find , because it is on the far south side of the strip mall , almost in the back , but well worth the effort. I am not a big fan of Olive Garden type Italian, (Thats like calling Taco Bell good Mexican cuisine ). This was some of the best, authentic Italian that I have had outside of New York. The lunch menu is limited, but very good. I had the Eggplant Parmigiana and my wife had the lasagna. The sauce is light and full of real tomato flavor. Both dishes were excellent , not your typical , heavy lump of cheese/meat /noodle, just simple and good. And the people there are wonderful, my wife even got a hug from mama on the way out.

This is a hard-to find, but nice little family-run Italian restaurant. It is on Tampa Bay Blvd, almost part of Fiesta Shopping Center, but tucked back from the street adjacent to the west. The menu is limited, but the pasta & meat dishes are very well done. A unique touch is a piece of fried veal with your salad. Prices are very reasonable, and preparation is quick when we visted....but were the only guests. Unfortunately no wine or other alcohol is available. Service is attentive and friendly. Interior decor in the small dining room is very plain and does not add any Italian aura to the atmosphere. It was recommended to us by family friends who are both Tampa natives and related to Italians. So some dedicated fans continue to find it and keep it alive.

This is one of Tampa's best kept secrets. The food is what Italian-American food should be simple and tasty. This is like eating at your Grandma's house.

This is the very definition of a local family business and well worth it if you are in the area. Tucked away in the back of a strip mall, if you aren't looking closely for it, you might miss it. The menu is small and the prices reasonable, but the food is delicious. Everything is made from scratch, so be prepared to wait for a little bit. One of the unique aspects of the menu is a veal cutlet that comes with every salad and every entree comes with a salad, so no matter what you order, you will end up with a sizable amount of food. If you are lucky, the father will be there and you can chat with him about the old days in Italy while you wait.

First time here and I'm in love. It's so hard to find good quality Italian food in Florida and this tops my list for any Italian food I have tried in the Tampa Bay Area so far. The atmosphere was so quaint and home style "mom and pop" style. You feel like you're sitting at home with your family with the aroma of the food from the kitchen and the red table cloth with bread in the center as a complimentary appetizer. Each dinner comes with a salad and a good size veal cutlet, delicious all the way around. I ordered the stuffed shells and the ricotta cheese was so fresh, which was refreshing from the processed stuff you pick up at the supermarket. For dessert we ordered a round of cannolis for the table which were OUTSTANDING. Honestly the best I've had in a very long time. The staff was incredibly friendly and the manager himself took our order and brought our food out. Needless to say my boyfriend and I definitely will be back numerous times so we can get our Italian home style fix!

As you can tell by the ridiculous number of check-ins I have here I love coming to this restaurant. It feels more like being invited to eat in someone's family kitchen instead of a standard restaurant visit. Grandma is making making food in the kitchen while Grandpa and their son handle the dining room. The family that runs this establishment is so friendly and welcoming. The menu is very simple and has standard Italian classics. Everything is very reasonably priced and you get so much food for your money. They start you off with bread and warm marinara sauce to dip it in. The first time we came here we were all really confused when they brought out the salad because half of the plate was taken up by a huge veal cutlet (which is delicious and I am now completely addicted to). It is included with every entree. I've tried the stuffed shells, lasagna, eggplant parmesan, and ravioli. It's all delicious and I've never been disappointed with a meal here. My only complaint (and it is minor) is that they don't have chicken parmesan on the regular menu. Sometimes they have daily specials, of which chicken parmesan sometimes makes an appearance. This is my favorite place for Italian food in the Tampa Bay area.

Hubby and I were in the area one night seeing a performance of our sons band (shameless plug: Act of Mercy! "Like" them on Facebook! --End Brag) when we stopped into Montauro's. We were craving italian food in the worst way and being late on a Sunday night with still an hour drive back to New Port Richey, we would be out of options by the time we'd get home. So, onto YELP we went to find out what was yummy in the local area. Montauro's got decent reviews so we decided to give it a go. Finding it was a bear. They are kind of behind a huge shopping center where you think an alley would be. After circling the strip mall on few times, we finally found them. No big deal. When we came in, there was some large party going on in the back room. We were seated up front. Cute little place, kind of a "pizza parlor" feel to it, complete with some photos of Italy, a window into the kitchen, the smell of garlic and fresh bread. We were greeted immediately by the owner who was very lovely. Once seated, he gave us our menus. Their menu is very limited to about 10 entrees. However, these entrees are their specialties, the great italian standard fare that no italian restaurant should be without. Lasagna, eggplant parm, spaghetti and meatballs, baked ziti and a few others. We were salivating between the smell of the food and the written descriptions. Bread was brought to the table with some nice warm marinara sauce. While the bread was nice and fresh (an unexpected surprise for 8:30 pm on a Sunday night before closing) it wasn't served warm, which would have been a lot nicer. Next up was the salad course, which was served on a plate with a breaded cutlet. Real old Italian style. I was so excited to see that cutlet because I was STARVING by then. It was a nice thin cutlet that is included with your dinner entree, however, I did not know it was a veal cutlet til I bit into it. I HATE veal. I handed over the remainder of my cutlet to my husband who scarfed it down in a swallow. I was still so hungry that I just might have sucked it up and ate it anyway, but I picked at my salad and continued to munch on bread. No big deal because I was CRAVING some old school, home made spagehtti and meatballs! More room for that, right? Time to give our orders and my hubs went for the baked ziti while I exclaimed "Spaghetti and Meatballs PLEASE!" Owner tells me, they are out of meatballs. Out of MEATBALLS? On a Sunday night? The big Italian family feast night...and you're OUT OF MEATBALLS? Surely I was in some parallel universe full of spaghetti sans meatballs and veal cutlets taunting me from every corner of the room. "We had a big party tonight and we just ran out". Nooooooooooo! Still determined to have my pasta, I sadly said...I'll just have spaghetti then. The owner felt bad, you could see it in his face (although, looking at his eyes, all I could think about is how good those round orbs might be covered in marinara and sitting in my spaghetti, posing as meatballs). He said he would TRY "scrape up" a meatball from "somewhere" in the back so I could at least taste it. Well, now, I am having visions of him making a meatball out of the leftovers sitting on plates from dishes not yet washed. I said, no, that's okay. Just the pasta. But, he still came out with a huge plate of spaghetti and a single, small meatball staring up at me sadly saying, I don't blame you if you don't eat me. But, I had heard such good things about the meatballs, I ate all my spaghetti and saved the delicious meatball for last. I have to say, I was very disappointed. First of all, the meatball was predominantly a veal ball. I know most meatballs that are real Italian style are made with ground beef, ground veal and ground pork. Despite my hatred of veal, I can usually stand it because of the blend of the meats masking the taste of the veal. This meatball was just...not good. Plus, the presentation of just one small ball of meat that was just "scraped up" from somewhere...I don't know. It was just disappointing. While the owner was VERY kind and remained completely apologetic, it still sort of ruined the dining experience for me. I would have rather he skipped the magically appearing meatball altogether and let me just imagine what could have been than bring out this one small ball that didn't taste very good and was sort of cool in the center. We were even charged for the full meal. Really? Why? I really wanted to love Montauro's based on such great reviews and the staff being so kind. My husband was satisfied with his meal, saying it was "good". Normally, he raves about an excellent meal, so I guess it was just mediocre for him as well, though he DID truly love those veal cutlets at the beginning of the meal and wished he had ordered more. You can BYOB of wine here. Wish I had to drown my sorrows. I am hoping that this was just an off night for Montauro's. Sadly, I will never know for sure.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
