I have to admit, I was impressed. Stopped in on a weekend for lunch. The decor struck me as typical chain restaurant, kinda cheesy but uncluttered. You are given menus when you sit down and yet they don't really help much. The menus don't have entrees or the main thing they are known for: the Mongolian BBQ. The menu has a couple of appetizers, things like edamame and pot stickers, but is mainly drinks/cocktails and a few desserts. Our server came over and took our drink order and explained to us how things work. When she brought our drinks out, she also brought out two stainless steel bowls. You take your bowl over to the food station where you can load them up with a variety of options. It's one price no matter what you get so you might as well load up your bowl. Meats include: chicken (scooping raw chicken is gross, ugh), sausage, pulled pork, beef, turkey, shrimp, clearly imitation crab meat, etc. After that you hit a selection of spices; everything from salt and pepper to garlic, cumin, ginger, steakhouse blend, cajun seasoning and more. Next you choose veggies. There is a wide variety including broccoli, spinach, mushrooms, snow peas, mini corn, onions, carrots, green peppers, and on and on. Last stop is a sauce bar with about a dozen different sauces. Each sauce is labeled and the label tells you what meats it works best with. Once you've loaded your bowl and chosen your sauce you walk over to the large grill. I guess it's a grill. Closer to a large flat top. You hand your choices off to a cook who asks what type of starch you'd like. You can choose noodles, white rice, or brown rice. FYI- you can choose more than one. When we were leaving we saw people with rice and noodles. Doh! The portions of noodles and rice aren't huge so I could understand why people would get more than one. We also noticed an unlimited option, where for $6 or $7 more you can fill up your bowl as many times as you want. I was really pleased with my selection of chicken, veggies, honey soy sauce and a touch of teriyaki sauce. It came out really well but I guess I have myself to thank for that. :) Service was just ok but we were there at an off time. For two people at lunch our bill was about $20.

This was our first visit to the newly (two days ago) opened place. Lots of pre-opening buzz, and we love Asian and are eating healthier, so this seemed just right. Overall, an excellent experience. We're going to forgive some of the service stumbles (they forgot our drinks) as part of opening-week kinks to work out. The food was very, very good. You pick your own raw protein, seasonings, vegetables and sauce, and they stir-fry it for you on a giant griddle and serve it over your choice of starch (rice, noodles, etc.) There is excellent variety, the pre-cooked food looked very appetizing and fresh, and the variety will allow for endless combinations. Staff was very helpful and attentive, if a little young and inexperienced. The price is reasonable, and the full bar and flat screen TVs are nice differentiators. Definitely going to return and explore more combinations.

Will Never go here again and if you are a vegetarian, you might find this disturbingly interesting.. I went through all the options and chose only vegetarian stuff like tofu and veg and even when I got to the part where you hand it off to the cook I reminded the girl I was a vegetarian and so would like it cooked on the special grill they have for allergies or whatnot. My bowl came and I ate about half of it before noticing a piece of CHICKEN in my bowl that was cooked with my meal. I told my waitress and she seemed slightly shocked and said she would get the manager and then on top of it she never even came back with him just came back and said "you get your bowl free" with a smile. Oh great thanks ill just continue eating it now and enjoy my free tortured animal infested meal that I have already been eating. Yeah never again. Ever

Stopped in for a quick dinner after picking up my portable person, concept was unclear, server offered a tour, but should it be that hard? Cook staff was great, food looked good and fresh, server seemed confused and didn't really seem to be able to explain the menu very well. What put me off the most was the decor. It was dark and gloomy. Server seemed in a rush to give us the check and then couldn't be found when it was time to pay. Interesting concept, but the details need work. I think PeiWei is a much better experience for less cost.

First time coming here and our waitress Vondalyn was super sweet and very helpful. She even walked us over and showed exactly how everything works!

I would give this no stars, if it were possible. First let me say that I am aware this is a semi-fast food place, so my expectations were not high. However, it's still a restaurant with a host stand, waitstaff, bar staff, and kitchen staff that could have provided the bare minimum of service. I normally would not bother reviewing a restaurant of this caliber, but our experience was terrible. My son and I were out doing errands. We decided to stop in for Sushi at a local place, but it was closed. So...we decided to try the nearby Genghis grill as a substitute. When we entered the front door. A huge sign said "wait to be seated", but there was no hostess in sight. We waited over 5 minutes. All the while, the bartender could see us standing at the front. She had about 3 customers, and we could see that there were about 3 tables of people in the entire place. Finally, the bartender came over to seat us. After we sat, at least 10 minutes passed by. A waitperson never showed up. We were looking around, hoping to get someone's attention, but it never happened. Finally, we decided to just walk out. The bartender looked directly at me as we left. She never said a word. Just let us leave. I can't comment on the food, because we never tasted any. I will never return, and will tell everyone I know not to bother.

Not a bad experience at all! The seating area we where sat in was clean. Service was a little slow but we just made sure we asked for what we needed when we saw our server. There are three size bowls to choose from when before deciding on your meal. I do wish the server would have explained it all to me since it was my first time but I figured it out. Set up buffet style-anything goes as long as it fits in your bowl. I tried the scallops with baby corn, onions, red and green peppers, snap peas, sliced potatoes, mushrooms, and broccoli. It was good but I wouldn't get the scallops again because they were bay scallops and after cooking them could not taste them in the mix of veggies. Over all I was happy and would go back but probably get steak for my stir fry.

tampa ONLY IS 9.99 all you can eat. If you never been to this place before it's quite different it's a buffet that they cook for you after you choose what you want to eat

The food was fresh and cooked to perfection. Our server Vonn was attentive and family friendly. Service was awesome overall we recommend Genghis Grill. Enjoy and tell Christian hello for us.

We have been twice and two very different experiences. The first visit during a week day and it was pretty slow. But the welcome and the service was great. We joined the "frequent flyer club" and the food was really good. We enjoyed the variety and everything was fresh and clean. Our second vista was more recent on the weekend and the service was pitiful. Not enough people to serve and trying to pay the bill was taking an act of congress. The food was still good and seemed fresh, a little more messy at the fix'en bar, but with a lot of traffic you can expect that and people can be slobs. We will still go back and we enjoy the food, but we understand that it may be hard to staff such a place, but the servers were lack luster and seemed not very motivated.

We stopped here tonight to try this out for the first time. This is a Mongolian grill setup. You get a bowl and head up to the buffet area. You choose which meat(s) you want and there are a wide variety to choose from, from beef to chicken to pork to seafood. You then choose from a good selection of vegetables, spices and sauces. Spicy to mild to hot. You then hand it over to the grill area, they grill it with your choice of rice/noodles/pasta and bring it to your table. Want another? They charge an additional $6.95. They have a kids "make a bowl" or other choices you find at most any other restaurant (Mac and cheese, pizza, etc). Good varieties here. Will I go back? Absolutely.

I came in today to get a bowl to go. I went to the bar & the guy there took my order & told me to proceed to the food station. I get to the food station, load up my bowl then take it to the counter. When I get to the counter a couple was in front of me, not only did they take up the entire counter space not bothering to move down so other people could place their trays, they also held up the cook by giving him an extravagant verbal list of how they wanted their food cooked. There is no exaggeration when I say I waited behind these folks for a good seven or eight minutes as they kept going on and on trying to explain why they chose the sauces they did, when they wanted him to put in the sauce & a bunch of other bull crap that I stopped listening to half way in & I bet the cook did also. Im sorry but this is not Philippe Chow ok?! They literally slap the food on the grill & cook it so fix your damn bowl, tell them if your allergic to anything then go sit the hell down! (Woo sa, deep sigh) They were very inconsiderate which was not the cooks or the restaurants fault but hey that's just how some people are. But I might add that while I was waiting behind dumb & dumber another cook/staff (female) came out the kitchen, stared at the line then proceeded to go in the cooking area and talk to her co worker. Mind you they only had two cooks on the grill and the manager (?) was talking to the cooks while they were cooking about random stuff non related to work. Now had this been any other time than the start of the dinner time rush I wouldn't have cared as much about them not being in tip top shape but the line was growing longer and it was the start of the busiest time of the day. So why not stop talking for a moment and add another cook? Obviously the staff didn't care that much. This location has nothing on the Brandon one. Even at lunch time Brandon has more than two cooks on the grill & its staff knows how to behave. I don't plan on ever returning to this location in the near future. I'm giving three stars because my food was good, experience not so much.

  • Susan F.

The entire experience was a disaster! Slow service, poor food quality, and the buffet was empty and dirty! We had to wait 20min for them to refill the meat containers. I most definetly do NOT recommend this place!

  • Kathy D.

What can I say, I wasn't impressed. It was a Saturday night and I wondered if we were ever going to make it through the line. I like the choices. Flavors were good and enjoy being able to make my personal choices to complete my bowl. Portions are a bit smaller and pricier than similar restaurants. I found no real problems with the restaurant, except the wait. Staff was friendly, but restaurant cramped. Nothing really jumped out at me screaming for me to return. If I am in the area I might try it for lunch, but I would not go out of my way to return. What's a girl to do? Love all new experiences & keep having more new experiences.

"Did You Know? Genghis Khan's many wives and his penchant for rape and pillage might have seen him sire hundreds or even thousands of children. According to a famous 2003 genetic study, around one in 200 living men carry a form of the Y chromosome that may have originated with the Great Khan himself. If true, that would mean that 0.5 percent of the world's male population are his direct descendants." Maybe one of those said descendants owns Ghengis Grill? Jk So, in general we enjoyed the experience- the cheap adult beverages certainly helped....$2.50 all day for wine, beer and well drinks? And just $5ish for specialty cocktails?! This is better than any happy hour! The ingredients were very fresh, with a wide variety. I wish the bowls were larger, and we got more rice. The kids meal mix was a great deal at $5. And if you check in on Yelp they currently have a 2 drinks and 2 bowls deal for $20 which is awesome. Don't bother with the appetizers, they weren't worth it. The service was good, the GM was really nice, and the food was hot. AND they had sriracha. We will be back, next time I need to figure out how to more strategically pile on the food! :p

I came here with a friend a bit ago. I had never been to a Genghis Grill and was curious about trying it. It seems like a good place for groups and probably super fun for kids. The service was fantastic. I felt very well attended by my server. The food was okay overall. I found the system sort of confusing but was able to put together a nice collection of food. They ended up losing my sauce somehow, so I had to go back and put more together. I think the main thing I didn't like was the amount of liquid left in my stir fry bowl, as it made everything quite soggy. I don't think I was overly zealous with my sauce, as I don't really like very salty things.

  • Ashley R.

I'm not the biggest fan of going to a restaurant to cook your own food. Having your food cooked in front of you? Awesome. Genghis is a little different because you can pick what you want in your bowl and add your own seasonings and then the chef will cook it for you. It's hard for me to say what I put in my bowl because I put a little of everything. Mostly chicken and seafood with a little steak. For my vegetables I did mostly just peppers and onions but they have an array of fresh veggies for you to select what you want. Then you choose your seasonings then you choose a sauce. Or mix your own sauce like I did. From what I saw of some of the other guests you can pile your bowl as high as you like with the raw stuff and once they cook it on super high heat it will cure all of the issues you might have with your food touching. Maybe that's just me. Make sure you're pretty liberal with the the seasonings and the sauces and your food will turn out good. I really loved the teryaki sauce and then they have a dragon salt seasoning that's amazing. Once you take your bowl to the chef, you choose your starches and the chef will prepare your bowl and someone brings it to your table. The experience was great and the food was great and I'll definitely be back now that I know the system a little better. FYI they also have happy hour that is all day every day. Can't beat that.

Great concept, but horrible service. The cooks were professional, however the servers were very slow despite the fact that there were only one other table besides my family.

This place is a good place to come to for something different. It's cool that you are in control of what you food is going to be. We used the check in offer for 2 for 20 regular bowls with two drinks which is a deal because the regular for lunch is $12 each. So if you make your own bowl the trick is to smash as much as you can lol take your protein smash it and keep adding. I got a tray for any spill overs. I like their wide variety of proteins they offer from tofu, marinated white fish, steak, steak tips, shrimp, scallops, natural chicken breast, turkey, pepperoni, sausage etc...a lot of veggies and sauces. I like being in control of what eat then you pick your starches I got udon noodles and cabbage. I feel like I could have put more protein in there. Next time I will make it my goals to stuff as much as possible lol the server was good and it looks like they have a full stocked bar. I saw an advertisement for wine night on Wednesdays. Our food came out in a timely manner and it tasted fresh. It also wasn't greasy which I am happy about because I hate when I go to a stir fry place and leave with a stomach ache.

I came here with some friends for a birthday party. We had a really great time. The food was delicious. I really enjoyed picking what I wanted in my bowl. The guys cooking up the food were really nice and they made a huge fire for some fun. The waitress was also so very nice and attentive. We really felt welcome. They gave my friend a birthday brownie which was so yummy! I will definitely be back and looking forward to trying a new combination of food. I think it's a fun place for families!

I like their concept here, it's quick, easy, and tasty. Though having never been there it was a little challenging at the beginning, how much meat could I take, could I mix them, I was a bit confused, but staff really helped. I think there may be a need for more signage in the vegetable section though. I had no trouble picking my vegetables cause I am used to seeing them in their raw forms, but the ladies in front of me had no clue what was going on. They were taking things that they assumed were pasta and I had to explain they were bamboo shoots and the lady nearly lost it, she was screaming for somewhere to throw them back. She looked so confused so maybe some more signage would be helpful in case staff aren't there to answer everything. They had a great selection of sauces as well I went with a mix of their spiciest sauce and ginger citrus. It was really good with my vegetables, beef, rice, and noodles. Though it can be a little daunting and confusing this is a place to try. Their food is made fresh the way you want it and tastes really good.!

Food was good. Concept great, but for whatever reason the food was just decent. Asked about 2-20 deal and if I wanted unlimited can I just add $7 and person said no combination. So I asked another person and they said sure. Management... Which is it? I don't know if I would like the fish or scallops so it would be ideal to try a bit a not waste them. But I opted not to do ayce option and took a page out of the guy in front who just made a meat tower and just piled my stuff up. Turns out food was fine though I had to chase down someone to get refilled bin of scallops. Also only one side was open and at least 5 people got confused. Maybe a sign that says other lane please... Server attentive and clean locale. So 3 stars. Not dying to come back but if in area....

The first time I visited this restaurant was during lunch. There were only a few other guests there at that time, so it was nice to be able to take my time in the line to figure out how system worked and to sample the different seasonings and sauces. Tonight I went there during prime time dinner and it was pretty busy, but the service was close to outstanding. Every employee working was engaged in the whole dining experience rather than just about doing his/her job. The food was great and because I had been there before I had a better idea on what I wanted to eat. While they were cooking our food, we could hear the general manager, running the kitchen. He did an amazing job. He encouraged his employees the whole time and didn't have a negative word to say. Seeing a manager lead his team with the kind of attitude that Al (I believe his name was) had left a good taste in my mouth and made the whole experience even better. I'm in the same industry and seeing this kind of management made my night.

We randomly stopped in the Genghis one day for lunch. We were quickly seated by the hostess. Our server must have been fairly new because he became flustered very easily. We were shown the bowl sizes and the server explained the process of choosing the proteins, veggies, sauces etc. Once we finished filling our bowl we brought it to the the wok for them to cook. It was brought to our table quickly considering it was lunchtime on a weekend. If you sign up for the email club you will receive a coupons. We signed up while eating our lunch and we were able to apply a coupon that was already on my account. We will stop in again when in the area.

Been living around the corner for quite some time and drive by everyday. We finally decided to see what this place was about. The concept is good, the food was eh, and the service was atrocious. Our server would disappear for long periods of time, and when she did stop by she asked of we wanted refills and then never brought them. Aside from that the wrong bowl was given to me and the same meats we in there so I started eating before I realized. The food was mediocre and, for the taste, a bit overpriced. Spend your money elsewhere, I blame poor management on most of the issues here, but aside from that alone the product needs improvement.

We love this place when we have a group and all the picky eaters are with us- everyone gets what they want and it does not take rocket science to put the bowls together for a yummy dinner! Quick and not overly expensive. Join their rewards to earn free bowls!

First time there and it was actually pretty good. At first I didn't know what to do, I was given a metal bowl ( choice of 3 sizes) of course I chose the large, then you go on line and choose; steak, chicken etc all raw, then the veggies and sauce. You then give your bowl over to the cooks who prepare your food on what seems like a 10 foot diameter cooking surface. You also choose either rice, noodles etc. I would have given them four stars but the fried rice was very bland with no taste. I will be back and if the rice improves they will get the four stars.

We were pretty indecisive today, but knew we had to get some lunch before grocery shopping so we could ensure we don't pick up anything and everything. I then remembered I had a free birthday bowl coupon, & guess what my hubby did too. So off to genghis grill we go. We had loved BD's Mongolian BBQ and another stir fry place not in the area so why not. We both picked our meats and veggies in the bowl and our sauce and seasonings. I picked the udon noodles while he picked the fried rice. Other options were tortillas, white and brown rice and maybe another few more options. They brought your finished bowl to u. All was well. While we were waiting, we were entertained by the touch screen menu and games at your table. I also loved the strawberry mango ice tea that we got. Our waitress was nice and helped us all the way through. Best part of the meal was the bill. Two free bowls and just paid for the two ice teas. That works. My hubby liked it here a lot. Some stuff I always get at the other stir fry place that I didn't here were tofu. Also I always liked plain peanut sauce to put with plain rice. Whatever u choose like noodles or rice gets automatically put in your bowl not on the side. Maybe if I go back next time I could ask for it on the side. If u want to check out this place and get coupons or get your free birthday bowl, sign up for the emails. Also if you have been to other stir fry places like this before and put the veggies on bottom & meat on the top to get more meat, don't do that here. You will be up charged $6. There's a sign by the food that says that.

Build-your-own-stir-fry done really well. Very large selection of meats, veggies, seasonings, sauces, rice and noodles. Great option for vegetarian and vegan meals! Reasonably priced, really clean and very friendly staff. Jonathan was very sweet and took great care of us! We'll certainly be back.

Good concept. Good food. Just pick what meats, vegetables, and spices you want before you take it to the chef and select what starch you want to include for your stir fry. Was a better deal at $10 for unlimited bowls even though one was more than enough. Slightly higher prices now without "unlimited". With the higher prices now though it would seem appropriate to include more premium choices of meat.

After seeing Genghis Grills pop up everywhere over the past few years, I finally visited this one in Carrollwood to try it out. Every employee there, including the hostess, the servers, the cooks, and the manager, all seemed happy to be there and genuinely interested in making sure I had a good experience. Since this was my first time, the server was thorough in explaining the process of filling out my empty stainless bowl. Basically, you pick your protein or proteins first, then add vegetables, add spices, and finally pick a sauce (or mix multiple if you're adventurous). Then you hand your bowl to the cook with your starch selection (choose from rice, noodles, even tortillas). This being my first time, I decided to base my bowl off one of their Signature Bowls, the Khan Pao Chicken. With the Signature Bowls, you can pick up a recipe card and it walks you through the necessary ingredients. You're still free to add or remove whatever you want, of course. Once I finished building my bowl, I stuck around to watch the cooks stir fry my dinner on their huge circular griddle. I also watched them turn off the lights around the grill and create a large, dramatic fire while chanting and hitting the gong. It reminded me of what you might see at a teppanyaki-style steakhouse...doesn't do much for the actual cooking, but fun to watch. After a short wait, my food came out and I dug in. Not too bad! Had I had any complaints anyway, I would only have myself, the chef, to blame. One thing I think I might do differently next time is try to stack on more vegetables. Some vegetables reduced considerably during cooking and what looked like a lot going onto the grill ended up being not that much coming off the grill. Overall, a great experience. I'll be back again to develop my bowl building skills.

Wow do I love this place! Great fresh ingredients, and you can make it exactly how you want! Love the sauces... 3g is the best, with a little dragon mixed in (you can blend your sauces too). I always get the regular bowl, it's the perfect size.

The "Perfect Palmer" was super-tasty but a bit expensive at $3/glass, but there was a Yelp check-in deal for a free edamame appetizer, so it all worked out in the end... My experience at the restaurant boiled down to this -- I got to put a bunch of meat into a bowl and it was turned into stir fry. It was tasty and my belly was full. I'm a fan.

Ok so I've seen the bad reviews on here and just want to point outthat this place is a build your own dinner restaurant. I mean if your food is overseasoned or has too much sauce that's your fault. Lol. To be honest once you go a few times it gets better and better as you get better at building your bowl. I always sit at the bar so I can't comment on being seated or table service but I get good service at the bar. Also if you need more food than the regular sized bowl you eat too much. I'm 210lbs and I can eat and it fills me up. The staff is always accommodating but they do seem to be a little confused sometimes. I think this location just has a high employee turnover rate and are constantly training new people as the bartender is different consistently when I go in. I love eating here.

Been to many places like this. The one difference is that you can only go up one time at Genghis. This was our first experience and we were there for a late lunch/early dinner on a Sunday afternoon. Our waiter Nick was excellent. Super nice and very attentive. We ordered the large bowls. There were lots of selections of proteins, veggies, etc. I can't complain about the taste since I created it. It was AWESOME! Anyway, the large bowl was plenty by the time you got rice, noodles, or totillas. I had enough to take home for a second meal. We will definitely go back again.

What can I say? My fiance is obsessed with this place. And I don't mind. I can always put together something new and keep it healthy. The chicken potstickers are good. They come with their signature 3G sauce. What I like in particular is that they are grilled to make them crispy on one side (as opposed to fried). Today we tried the chicken lettuce wraps. The lettuce was delicious and fresh and the meat was very tasty. I would order that again as well. For $10 a bowl, you get a lot of food. Just plan out your trip to the bar carefully because you don't want your veggies spilling all over the place. Oh, and grab the egg. They'll scramble it in and it's worth it :)

Started eating at Genghis Grill when BD's of Oldsmar closed down out of the blue due to a problem with the owner. I enjoyed eating at BD's and thought it was a very good deal. So...I tried Genghis Grill of Carrollwood with a bit of an attitude, thinking that they would not be able to compare to BD's of Oldsmar. I was right Genghis Grill did not compare. Genghis Grill overwhelmed me with how great it was. I arrived for lunch and sat at the bar. TRACI was the bartender and she helped me get started. She actually walked me to the meat selection area and went over the everything that I would need to know such as the rules involving putting meat on top of vegetables. No big deal. As a diabetic, chicken, steak and pepperoni is what I like and I showed the grillers that I knew how to pack a bowl HIGH. No problem from the manager or grillers regarding the size of my bowl. My special request was well done and it was done perfectly. Actually better then BD's. TRACI was attentive at the bar and the manager checked on me multiple times. I have since been back multiple times and I have already earned a free bowl. I never earned a free bowl at BD's. Even on my birthday, BD's forgot to send the email. Genghis Grill's lunch special is $7.99 including a drink ( a wine or beer is available to be substituted for the soda at no extra charge). I do not need or expect much in this situation but Genghis Grill will overwhelm you. If you want to compare GG to BERN's, well, GG may not compare but my most recent trip to BERN's and how unhappy I was at BERN's, I would recommend Genghis Grill for my out of town friends and relatives over BERN's every time. I would recommend trying out Genghis Grill on Monday for lunch as well as Wed thru Friday's. Sit at the bar and enjoy! I am a sports photographer locally that find it tough to eat meals that are healthy choices for myself, a diabetic. This restaurant is an easy choice for me and I'm sure if you get a chance, you would enjoy it as well.

Ghenghis Grill is located at the Northdale entrance on Dale Mabry. It is a chain, but provides fresh ingredients that you select and fill a bowl customizing your meal to your favorite ingredients. First you select meat/seafood choices then your vegetables, seasonings and sauces. You can mix seasonings and sauces for more customization. The entire bowl goes to the huge grill to be prepared with your choice of noodles or rice. The ingredients are cooked Mongolian style and served to you in a bowl to enjoy with fork or chopsticks. A favorite with everyone because each diner can pick exactly what they would like included. The Edamame appetizer is a nice starter as well. The grill and ingredient bar provide a form of entertainment and keep the evening fun. Our service was exceptional and quick. Our server, Johnathan, made the experience great. He was helpful, efficient, friendly and attentive. He also provided great suggestions. He even ran out to catch us in the rain with my son's sunglasses that he had left behind - impressive! He is a real asset to the business -ask for him for great service. Lunch will run about $20 for two and you will leave very full! Come try out this interesting dining experience!

Definitely one of my favorite places to eat. I'm never disappointed when I eat here and the bowls are completely customizable with whatever you feel like eating. The alcoholic drinks aren't that bad either. I always get the coconut drink ( I forget specifically what it's called) and its great. They also offer free bowls for birthdays!

For the price, its really great. I know for some the idea of collecting your food to be cooked might seem odd, but ti works. Pile it on, get as much as you can into that bowl and let them cook it for you. Plenty of variety in meat and veggies, with a great selection of sauces to choose from.

I enjoy Mongolian Barbecue places since they're quite a bit different from your usual Chinese take-out or Japanese steakhouse restaurants. The food options are healthier, and you have the freedom to pick and choose what will be in your final food bowl. Genghis Grill is located on Northdale Boulevard in northern Carrollwood, and directly across the road from Whole Foods Market. They've been open about 6 weeks, and the place was packed when I went for dinner tonight. The Mongolian BBQ concept is pretty simple... you get an empty metal bowl, and then walk along a buffet / salad bar line as you choose your raw proteins (sausage, pork, steak, chicken, fish, seafood, etc), and then your veggies (bean sprouts, onions, peppers, broccoli, carrots, etc.), next your spices (flavored salts, pepper blends, powdered garlic, and so on), and then finally your sauce (everything from sweet and sour up through "step back and watch me turn into a fire-breathing dragon"). Once you've packed that little bowl to an overflowing mass of food, you pass it to one of the chefs who stands around a big circular grill and stir-fries your dinner very quickly, amid much showmanship. They then plate your food with your choice of rice or noodles, and hustle the finished product back to your table, where you are eagerly waiting with chopsticks (or a fork) in hand. The price for this meal was just under $10, which makes it tough to beat for an economical dinner. There are now several Mongolian restaurants around town, and each is a bit different. More food selection = higher cost. Unlimited soup & salad, and trips to the food bar = higher cost. If you've not tried this style of cooking then I highly recommend that you give it a try. Genghis Grill gives you a fair balance of delicious food with a reasonable price tag.

First of all unique concept. The food was decent nothing spectacular, service was very good. The drinks were the highlight of the visit though. Very good and on point. Don't really have anything too negative to say. Check it out for good drinks and a different approach to a night out for dinner.

Glad to see new local Mongolian restaurant. Having dined in many of these type of places in California that didn't have servers this was similar food but servers to assist with sides and drinks. Was satisfied with portion size and abundant food choices. This is a great option for vegetarians and carnivores as you control what goes in your bowl. Being new, management actually wanted feedback and seemed to genuinely care how your experience was. Would like to see them offer different size portions but for the 9.99 price it did truly satisfy.

I had completely forgotten about the concept of build your own stir-fries until I strolled into Genghis Grill in Carrollwood. Upon entering J-Fur and I were greeted by a very personable server. She asked if we had been there before. When we said no, she took us on a tour of everything we would need to make our experience pleasant. She explained all about the process, pointed out tried and true recipes that are recommended for those who have no idea where to start. She also emphasized the various colored sticks that they have for cooking vegetarian and vegan dishes. The stir-fry chef use different tools and a spots on the grill when working with special dietary situations like those. She then gave us a bowl to fill as we saw fit. I filled my bowl with tofu, onions, spinach, green beans, potato and carrots. I tried a number of different sauces before settling on the Chili Garlic. I also added some brown rice as my starch. Just a note, some of the sauces are not vegetarian as they contain shellfish. Most contain wheat although there are a couple that would work for a gluten free diet. I'd recommend checking the website before your visit because it has a great break down there. As I waited for my stir-fry, I checked in on Yelp. This unlocked a coupon for a free appetizer. The garlic citrus edmame sounded amazing so we ordered it. I have to say, I'm glad the edmame was free. It was overcooked and under spiced. There wasn't much flavor and it sort of just mushed into my mouth. I was extremely disappointed that something with so much potential fell flat. It was not a good first impression. Next up, my stir-fry. I was quite pleased with the way the stir fry looked upon arrival. It seemed to be browned and crispy with a nice glazing of sauce. I was a bit worried because the rice, while looking nice and soft, had no sauce on it. I feared a dry, under flavored dish. I stirred the veggies and rice together and took a bite. The vegetables were nice and fresh. The rice seemed perfectly cooked. But, as I feared, the sauce didn't resonate throughout. Thankfully the server had loaded our table with soy sauce, hot sauce and Sriracha. With a few drops of these, everything was fully functional and flavored. From that point forward, I was pleased. Overall, Genghis Grill has a lot of good to offer. There are a ton of fresh vegetables to choose from, a number of flavorful sauces and you can dress it up how you like (fried rice, brown rice, white rice, udon noodles, pasta or a tortilla). It allows for customization and has a lot of meat options for those into eating dead stuff. For those who aren't, they are very accommodating. The waitress was extremely helpful and kept checking on us throughout the visit. Unfortunately the one bad is a huge one. The dishes I tried on this visit seemed to be a bit lacking when it came to flavor. The stir-fry is understandable, we all like it different, and I was able to fix that with the condiments on the table. But the edmame? Wow...not good. Here's to hoping it was just a bad day in the kitchen. Will I visit again? I'm not sure. Tampa lacks a lot of real good places for big piles of sautéed vegetables and rice. I do like that about Genghis Grill. But I want something with pizzaz in my food and Genghis Grill doesn't seem to have that.

Great service and food. The entire staff that worked closing shift January 31, 2015 was amazing. They were attentive to our group of six and had no problem making sure my request for vegetarian options was granted. A special thanks to Kristian for being awesome. We will be back, not as often as we would like simply due to distance.

The food was fine, but overall, we were not impressed. My boyfriend and I checked out this place for the first time last night because we had received a coupon in the mail and were curious. We were asked if this was our visit by three different people (hostess, server, and manager) and despite our positive answer, we did not receive an immediate explanation about how dining there works. Our server eventually explained it to us, but it was done very quickly and not very well. No one told us that after we built our bowl, we should return to our seats while it cooked and someone would bring it to us, so we were standing/waiting around for no reason. The place felt a bit cafeteria-like. The confusion could easily be solved with a sign or better instructions on the menu. Although we were greeted and checked on, people who were working didn't seem to want to be there. Even though we tipped as we normally do, it seemed unnecessary, since we did half the work. The place wasn't even very busy. Tables had an electronic device which you could play games on--a nice idea but not something I wanted to pay extra for. Even with the coupon, I felt that the food and experience was overpriced. This place would have to make a few changes before I would return again.

I've been to many Mongolian grills before and I have to say that the Genghis grill falls short on many levels. The food is fine and they have many options which is great, however the service has been less then satisfactory almost every time I've been there. I found the manager to be very pompous and degrade his employees right in front of customers. On the week days the price isn't to bad for the food you get. On weekends though the cost just isn't worth it. You can get a pretty decent meal somewhere else for the same price.

Mongolian BBQ seems to be a developing cuisine in the Tampa area. Compared to the Midwest, it seems less popular. There are 2 Genghis Grills and 2 BD's in the greater Tampa Bay area, but for North Tampa/University peeps this is the closest. I may be spoiled b/c my first experience with Mongolian BBQ was at Flat Top grill in Bloomington, IL and Chicago. For those unfamiliar , you select your meats, veggies and sauces/spices, and hand it over to the cook who asks you what starch you want. They have udon noodles, steamed /fried rice, spiral pasta. Then it is cooked and brought your tables in a few minutes. There are preset combinations recommended by the restaurant, but I subscribe to the school of "throw and go". Unless you have allergic/religious dietary restrictions, I find that this is more fun. My bowls alaways seem to come out good. I think that Genghis has less options than flat top which disappointed me. 1) You cant put the starch yourself, but it is determined by the cook. Small nitpick. 2) While there 12 or so sauces, Flattop has around 30, and they are more varied. Genghis sauces are mostly "Asian/South Asian" and very similar but good. 3) Whats neat with Flat top was you could get a puri (small Indian flatbread) added to your order or a fried egg for no additional charge. Also you had the option to make your dish into: 1) Soup 2) Lettuce wrap, 3) regular bowl or 4) fajita roll. Genghis grill -only lets you do it as a standard bowl. The prices are slightly higher and there aren't really many discounts. They have some flavored lemonades which are good like flattop. I checked in on yelp and received a free garlic /citrus edamame but it seemed a bit rough and hard to swallow (slightly sharp in my pharynx). I'm not a picky eater, but I only ate a few bites. Your mileage may vary. Service was fine My service was prompt and courteous. The layout of the restaurant feels a bit cramped with thin corridors. I think Genghis is ok for lunch or a light dinner, but I wouldn't be rushing to come every week.

Family all enjoyed selecting their own ingredients and seeing it being cooked on the large grill. The only concern I would have is if it gets very crowded. I could see how the meat and veggie selection could really take some time to get through. Just my family took enough for me. Really good flavor with all of out selections.

I have been going to this location for over two years. The service has always been consistently Good. My wife and I are normally seated in one of 4 locations each time we have gone. the first few times it is a little bit of a learning curve on building your bowl. Now it second natured building a great creation. The staff ask our names for our cards, we have fun and use His and Hers or some other dumb funny names. The staff interacts with you if your not putting off you a hostel patron. If you take the time and think of flavor combos. Use the small tray and place your bowl on it. place your proteins in and then press them to the edges of the bowl. Add your seasonings not over doing them! now to the veggies, remember taste combos. place your veggies and use your hands to press them down and out to maximize your toppings, crown the top. Next the sauces, I ask for two sauce cups (I like to flavor) you can mix sauces in the cups. I will half one of my cups with two different sauces. Pick your starch. You can pic two different ones also. I don't add anything when the bowl makes it to the table. You should have added enough flavor while creating it. Don't over eat, this stuff makes great leftovers! Note if you have slot of sauce in your take home, ask for a additional starch to go.... we go at a minimum once a month. free birthday bowls and every 10 purchased bowls gets you 1 free bowl.

My family and I were big fans of Bd's before their ingredient quality started plummeting, so we were excited to try this place. We visited early on Saturday afternoon and were promptly shoved into one tiny corner of the bar. I don't know if they were trying to clean the rest of the restaurant or close a section or what, but even with only menus on the table, my party of four was crammed in and practically elbowing each other in face. We were also seating right next to a party of two that were quite loud in their conversation. Needless to say, we were less than thrilled and asked to be reseated somewhere with a bit more space. And thus followed about 10 minutes of hemming, hawing and pulling of sour faces by two different waitresses and some serious cranky face by their manager who came over to see what the issue was and pretty much ordered them to seat us in the main restaurant. Not a great start. However, things went better from there. After placing our drink orders, we hit the ingredients bar. GG provides "recipe" cards and this being our first visit, we scanned a few for ideas. The meats were fresh-looking and there was a nice selection. Nice veggie selection and all well-cut for quick cooking on the flat top. I love that GG provides small spoons for trying the sauces and the 3G sauce was great - full of garlic and ginger flavor but not too spicy. The chefs ask about your carb preference as you drop off your food - rice, noodles, tortillas, etc. and you can wander back to your table to relax while it cooks (very nice improvement over Bd's). We were all pretty happy with our food and I really like that Ghengis Grill starts their pricing at a single bowl serving - because really, it was WAY more than enough food for me. Overall - pretty good flavors and freshness for a great price and the service was adequate, if rocky for us at first.

Sorry to be the turd in this sea of nice reviews but.... This place was pretty gross Service was very eager so you get a star for that I felt quite sorry for the teenagers working around the hot flat cauldron who have to act like it is a pep rally while they defrost your food It is like an Asian frozen sweet tomatoes, only instead of feeling good about yourself when you leave you want to barf in the bushes I might have been more lenient on this place if everything on the bar hadn't been still partially frozen. I had to use the tongs to break the frozen meats and veggies apart so that i could eagerly pile it up and feel sick You might want to steer clear of this place, great concept...yucky result

This is hardly the Mongo Grill I'm used to. First, it's not all you can eat then I just paid 12.00 for a large LUNCH bowl... I didn't get the rice or noodles, just the meat and veggies. The service was great though! I probably won't eat there again only because of the price.

I am obsessed with Mongolian bbq and am so happy there is finally a closer place in Tampa than BD's out in Clearwater. If you're not familiar with Mongolian bbq, what happens is you get a bowl and however much meat and veggies you can fit into it is what gets cooked. You also get to pick your sauce and spices and if you want rice/noodles/etc, and then they stir fry it up on one huge grill and there's your meal! The quality of the food at Genghis Grill is pretty mediocre- I only ever get the marinated steak and sliced beef (beef is awesome), so I can't comment on the other meats but it's not the greatest quality meat I've ever had, and the veggies aren't very fresh, particularly the sugar snap peas, which come out very stringy and not edible once you stir fry them. However, I was impressed with the assortment of choices they had for meats, veggies, sauces, etc. I'm not sure I've ever been to a Mongolian bbq place with so many choices for meats/veggies, so I think that's pretty cool. They also have little spoons near the sauce station so you can taste all of the sauces, which I like. One thing they told me at this place, which I found to be a little unusual, was that you can't go backwards from station to station- not sure why, maybe so you can't pile on extra meat (which I'm assuming is more expensive for them) if you have extra room in your bowl? If I lived closer to other Mongolian bbq places, I would probably only give this place 3 stars but since it is one of the only Mongolian bbq places within 30 minutes of Tampa, it gets an extra star for its uniqueness.

We really liked this place. We came on a Tuesday evening and decided to try out this place as we see it every time we visit Whole Foods across the street. Being fans of BD's Mongolian, we certainly put this place up for comparison. The $9.99 bowl price was a bit more reasonable than BD's, but the lower quality of the meat explained the difference. The chicken wasn't well trimmed in my opinion and the sliced beef was much tastier than the marinated steak. The shrimp were tiny, so you had to load up on those and the crab is imitation crab. The seasonings for the meat were fantastic! We liked the dragon salt and mongolian seasonings. The veggie offerings were plentiful, although the green beans and potatoes didn't fair well in the stir-fry to me as they fell apart. The mushrooms and squash were great and the green onions turned out very nicely in the stir-fry. The sauces were absolutely fantastic and definitely were a step ahead of BD's on taste. The 3G was certainly our favorite, but the honey soy was good as well as the Mongolian BBQ..... It just depends on what flavor you are going for. They do have tester spoons so you can decide on your own. I do really like that the noodles or rice are added at the grill and do not take space in your bowl. I also recommend having them toast some sesame seeds at the grill for you if you are a sesame fan. These certainly added something additional to our dishes. On a final note, the strawberry dragonfruit bowl (from the beverage menu) was a bit costly, but large enough for the three of us to share. It was VERY tasty and we are going to attempt to recreate it at home :-) Overall, this will be a good substitute for us having to drive all the way to BD's. I am hopeful they will eventually step up the quality a bit on the protein offerings and then they should be able to hit at least 4 stars from me. The extra star would have to be earned with really good service, which was just lackluster for our first experience.

Food tastes subpar; barely anyone there. Staff was very nice and hospitable, but the raw proteins just sit in a buffet tub with tongs over ice. Not appealing at all :/

Wow do I love this place! Great fresh ingredients, and you can make it exactly how you want! Love the sauces... 3g is the best, with a little dragon mixed in (you can blend your sauces too). I always get the regular bowl, it's the perfect size.

I totally agree with Anthony M. He took me to Genghis for the first time. A ton of meats to choose from, which is perfect for me. Restaurant is clean and inviting, prices are good, service is great, all in all one of my absolute favorite places to eat.

I'm a fan.

We love this place when we have a group and all the picky eaters are with us- everyone gets what they want and it does not take rocket science to put the bowls together for a yummy dinner! Quick and not overly expensive. Join their rewards to earn free bowls!

Great place to be each other. Food was delicious. Service (Axel) was extremely customer service focused in light of a few issues. Music is very current and upbeat. They do have the new Presto table kiosks to entertain. :0)

I thought food was bland and so not worth 10 bucks. I had the Thai street noodle and it was all carrots, no cabbage and very little noodle. First and last time there!

Pretty good for value. Enjoyed the food. Crew pretty attentive. Watching the cooks stir fry the food was fun. The bar is well stocked.

The food is great but the service left a little to be desired. I eat at the brandon location all the time and the service is second to none. Great location here for a post workout protein fix.

Simply put...It's probably my favorite place. So, I get to pick out mine own ingredients, that I want, with the favors that I like...and they grill it up for me. Can't get any better.

For the price, its really great. I know for some the idea of collecting your food to be cooked might seem odd, but ti works. Pile it on, get as much as you can into that bowl and let them cook it for you. Plenty of variety in meat and veggies, with a great selection of sauces to choose from.

Food tastes subpar; barely anyone there. Staff was very nice and hospitable, but the raw proteins just sit in a buffet tub with tongs over ice. Not appealing at all :/

The entire experience was a disaster! Slow service, poor food quality, and the buffet was empty and dirty! We had to wait 20min for them to refill the meat containers. I most definetly do NOT recommend this place!

Ever

We love this place when we have a group and all the picky eaters are with us- everyone gets what they want and it does not take rocket science to put the bowls together for a yummy dinner! Quick and not overly expensive. Join their rewards to earn free bowls!

Pretty good for value. Enjoyed the food. Crew pretty attentive. Watching the cooks stir fry the food was fun. The bar is well stocked.

For the price, its really great. I know for some the idea of collecting your food to be cooked might seem odd, but ti works. Pile it on, get as much as you can into that bowl and let them cook it for you. Plenty of variety in meat and veggies, with a great selection of sauces to choose from.

  • Alyssa H.

It is a very unique experience. You get to pick all of the meats and sides that go into your bowl. You also get to pick your spices, which makes it interesting because you never know your food is going to out. I'll definitely go back.

The entire experience was a disaster! Slow service, poor food quality, and the buffet was empty and dirty! We had to wait 20min for them to refill the meat containers. I most definetly do NOT recommend this place!

Ever
