Ate here after reading other reviews and was somewhat disappointed, since the reviews were pretty good. Food was decent but not worth the price, especially for lunch time. Their horchata was pretty good, seems like it's hard to find around here. The lengua tacos were good too are also hard to find. While their chips and salsa is free, it wasn't very good. The tortilla chips didn't seem so fresh and their salsa was different and not as tasty as other places. Again the food is not bad, just in comparison to another Mexican restaurant we got the same amount of food here than the other place for twice the price.

I really enjoy this authentic Mexican food! Nice portions, price, and service! Be prepared to utilize your Spanish skills sometimes there isn't a English speaker available but well worth the wait.

I'm from San Diego, California. Been in Tampa about 3 years, and I am ALWAYS on the lookout for "real" mexican. You know, the dirty taco shop with the best burrito. FOUND IT. This place is INSANE. Just like SoCal taco shops. Carne Asada burrito, lettuce and meat only. Do it.

This weekend was quite chilly. Since we have moved here from Chicago, we have not been able to find Caldo De Res (Beef Soup). We specifically did a search and called places this weekend to find it. The closest place we could find was El Rey De Oros. I was not expecting a fancy place, nor did that matter to me. It was alright. Those small places are in fact the ones with the best food. My agua de pina(pineapple juice) was wonderful and refreshing. My caldo de res was pretty good, the first one I had in about 3 years. I am still in search of the one. This place was pretty good but I am looking for big chunks of the veggies and good beef. I did a lot of pulling apart this meat just bc of the different pieces in it. My husband liked this place, and loved the horchata here. Glad I know it is around.

Came for the chiliquilles but died in heaven with the pork pozole- we have even come back a few times and even though this is a whole in the wall food location- the food is just like from home in Mexico- though be prepared- no one speaks English! The location is small and on our first visit we did spend probably 3 or 4 hours sitting and eating sopa de menudo y pozole - chased with a few corona- heads up no full bar here but they do have beer and goes very well with each of the dishes. I felt like I was back home in Ciudad de Mexico en a traditional Fonda when I walked through the front door - from the excellent quality and variety of food to the superior service this place has become my home away from home. I love when a place appreciates onion, cilantro and lime as much as I do- and not to mentions after spending our 3 or 4 hours the first visit eating and drinking non-stop- we only spent about $50!!! The best money ever spent in Tampa to date, we have gone back and will continue to go back and recommend to anyone who reads this to give this place a try! I promise you will not be disappointed and will always come back for more!

Nice service; not much English spoken here but enough to get by. Chips and dip were good, food was good too but a little too greasy. Would go again.

I love "hole in the wall" mexican food.. But this was not that. This place definitely fits the hole in the wall part, but not the mexican food part. I had chicken enchiladas, and they were AWFUL. I believe the chicken was spoiled, or tainted in some way and there was thick layer of cheese over everything. Yuck. My waitress refused to even try to communicate in English. Yuck again.

Many thanks to Bryan A. for doing a review on El Rey De Oros. I tried it a few weeks ago and was impressed with the portions and quality of the food. The restaurant is close to a Mexican grocery so I am sure that has an impact. The waitress seemed to have a language barrier so you may need to flex your Spanish a little when dining here. My order of carne asada came with rice, refried beans, tortillas, fresh avocados, salad, two skirt steaks, and queso fresco - talk about a deal and for less than $9. The horchata was perfect. I completely agree about the neighborhood...it is right in the middle of the slums so make sure to bring a friend or family member. I felt a little odd when the clientele rushed the place, but locals are always a good sign for a restaurant. Well worth a trip. Totally agree with Bryan about the reminder of California Mexican food as well.

I love the food here. It's truly Authentic Mexican food. I was raised in California and this place reminds me of the great Mexican food there. The staff is really friendly. The servings are massive and inexpensive. The neighborhood isn't great but still worth the food.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
