As a University of Miami alum, I always grabbed a delicious arepa from a street vendor on my way out of the Orange Bowl after a Hurricanes football game. (Do NOT get me started about the lousy UM president deciding to move the team way out to the Dolphins' stadium, which effectively killed the football program) In recent years, I craved those arepas here at home in Tampa and would occasionally seek them out in various locations. To say I was generally disappointed would be an understatement. Until now. El Chuzo BBQ has finally answered the call on where I can get them. The minute I opened the box and saw it, I knew my search was over. Sinking teeth into that ropa vieja arepa just confirmed what my eyes had already told me. It was exactly what I had been searching for and even bigger and better than the ones outside the Orange Bowl. (Although those were only one or two dollars, of course) There was so much other good stuff on the menu which covers the entire wall of the inside, I also took home empanadas and sweet plantains for later because the temptation and value was too good to pass up. Also, I really appreciate my food being so piping hot when I was handed my bag for take-out. It took me about 15 minutes to get home to enjoy it and it was still at a very warm temperature.

Stopped by here with family after picking them up at the airport. After hearing so much about the burgers, I had to check it out for myself. Everything they say about them is true. They're large enough to have a zip code. It's virtually impossible to keep everything inside the bread as it's exploding out the sides even when it's in the basket. Not knowing just exactly how big they were before ordering, we ordered beef empanadas, chorizo, plantains, roasted potatoes and fries to share. Wow, we should have waited until we saw the burgers. Needless to say, we had to roll each other out the door, and that was carrying all the leftovers with us. With all of the other great food to check out on Armenia, I haven't had the chance to go back. But should a large burger attack ever strike me while in Tampa, El Chuzo will get my pick.

Carne Frita -- Love it! The fried pork is so tasty. I usually get yelled at by friends for eating my meal way too quickly, but the fried pork had just the right amount of firmness/chewiness that I actually had to slow down a bit and eat like a civilized human being ;) Hawaiian Empanada -- I wish the ingredients were listed... When I was ordering, I asked if any of the empanadas had cheese in it (I'm lactose intolerant). I was told, "No. They only have beef or hawaiian in them." I guess I should have gotten clarification on that last part, but I just assumed it meant ham and pineapple. Well, I was close... it was ham, pineapple, and.... cheese. Ugh. I got one bite into it and realized I wouldn't be able to eat the rest (and that I'd most likely have an upset stomach later because of the bite I already had). When it was mentioned to the employee, the reaction was, "Oh, the hawaiian? Yeah. That has cheese in it." Nice.... That would've been a great response when I first asked... but not so helpful after I already took a bite. Meh. I'm not dinging them for the surprise-dairy situation, though. It was annoying to me, but obviously don't affect the average Yelper. Sour Sop Juice -- As you might guess from what I've written so far, when I was asked if I wanted it mixed with water or milk, I opted for water ;) I'm not sure if the size of the drink is worth $3, but it certainly was good. If you haven't had Sour Sop before, you should try it sometime. All in all, this was a tasty place to go. Definitely worth a repeat visit.

I used to drive along Colombian corridor and wonder about El Chuzo BBQ. Next to a tattoo shop and boasting an extremely small parking lot, there was something left to be desired about this place. Until the day came when I visited El Chuzo... and my thoughts were forever changed. El Chuzo is a small establishment but if you serve good food, the people will come... and they do! Find a place to sit, anywhere there's room. The left and right walls are lined with stools, and the small space in the center is left open for customers to order and mozy around. Even better, they are open late! Colombians love their hamburgers, just not your typical hamburger. At El Chuzo, you get a smoked beef patty with all the fixings to include a number of sauces, pineapple and crunchy steak frites in your hamburger. Delish and very filling. The steak sandwich is good, but was not as flavorful as I expected it to be. However, I plan to revisit this item. You can never go wrong with the salchipapa dish though, especially at El Chuzo. The potatoes and salchicha are smothered in tasty sauces. Who can say no to that? Well, a vegetarian I guess... El Chuzo's arepas are on point as well, in particular the pernil arepa. It is juicy, stuffed to the brim and heaven sent. My favorite menu item as of yet! El Chuzo also offers your traditional empanadas and empanadas made with a twist- Hawaiian style with ham and pineapple! These are not bad but they are not my favorite for two reasons only: 1) I've never really liked the pineapple and ham combo, even on pizza, and 2) I love my plain, ole Colombian empanadas too darn much. Like I said, I changed my mind about El Chuzo. Even so much as to be on my list of places to bring out-of-town guests that are staying with us!

This place is a serious gem. The epitome of drunk/hangover food, this place is incredible. I had the Perro and it was obnoxious how large the meal was. I don't know if it's the combination of sauces or what, it was so good. it was good enough that i considered going back for lunch the next day just because i was torn between the burger and the Perro. The only thing keeping this from 5 star is its a kind of seedy feeling part of town. i may be wrong about that, but I'd rather not be there at 3am.

Man, this place is ridiculous. Ridiculously slow and ridiculously tasty. The flavors here are STRONG with the force. Everything is char-grilled, so all the food has a really great smoked flavor, even the arepas. Now, I don't normally get excited about arepas, but these here are so good that I choked down two in one sitting. To a first-timer, the menu is large and a bit overwhelming. Everything sounds good, and the food everyone is eating around you looks fantastic, so it's tough to zero in one or two items. Because of a conversation I had with our awesome CM about a year ago, I've been dying to try their burger, so I ordered one of those. In addition, I ordered a pincho de pollo and a chorizo. Here's the deal folks, if you order a pincho or chorizo, it's a MEAL, not just the item. Each comes with its own arepa and potatoes. This is important información because I thought I was ordering a burger with a pincho and chorizo on the side, and what I ended up with was 3 freaking meals! Not that I'm complaining because I'm stuffing my potato trap with leftovers as I'm typing, and the struggle is real. As for the burger, it was good, but not as good as I had hoped. I think it just had too many condements slapped on there. This thing was slippery and messy as hell. Eating the burger was like handling a live fish, and I could have made another meal with the shit that was falling onto my plate. I want the burger again with just cheese so I can actually taste the meat. The real surprise here was the pincho and chorizo, both of which were the best I'd had to date. I've had these items up and down the Colombian corridor, and El Chuzo's version played nice with my taste buds. As they say in my Chica's country, "Que rico!" We stopped in at about 2:30 AM and the place was PACKED. After ordering our food, we had enough time to make friends in the parking lot, drink some of their beer, take shots of Johnny Walker and get invited to club next Friday. To be exact, we waited 45 minutes to receive our order. This was only frustrating because it was "to-go" and I had a 20 minute drive back home with this wonderful smelling grub in my back seat. So for speed of service, and an overly mayonaised/ketchupped/mustarded burger, I'm taking away one star for what could easily be a five star joint. I will be back, so maybe service will be a bit quicker.

I took two bites from my food and couldn't finish it, food was old and poor quality. I was with a friend and she couldn't finish her food either.

I love chicharron Ok, with that out of the way, we can move on to the review. Honestly, I feel somewhat guilty every time I eat here. The food is so tasty, the portions so plentiful, and the prices so low, that I feel like I am getting away with something! It's a guilty pleasure, complete with chicharron! Also, the arepa here are truly the best in town! Crunchy, fresh, and tasty! Whether you come for lunch or for the late 2am meal, it's always incredibly reliably, friendly, and full of awesome. Pro-tip: ask for the bottle of garlic sauce behind the counter. You won't be disappointed! Many get their meal to go but we are always happy to sit on one of the stools, and see so many families come in to enjoy a feast! Oh yea, I love chicharron!

I've eaten here twice now and I have to say I'm in love! This isn't really a place to sit and eat, the menu is in Spanish but subtitles in English. The burgers have a great smokey flavor and they put tons of different condiments on all their food which makes it sloppy and delicious. The tostones were a little over cooked, but I still enjoyed them allot. My friends mom makes amazing chicharrones so I was a little disappointed that I didn't really like theirs - didn't really have any flavor, but their main menu items are fantastic.

Thanks to the recommendations of Mike S., Carlos H., and Brett N., I added El Chuzo BBQ to my list of places to try along Armenia Avenue. El Chuzo is a very authentic Colombian-style BBQ restaurant meaning that the meats are smoked rather than grilled, and served whole rather than chopped or shredded. El Chuzo is a very small little lunch counter / to-go spot located a few blocks north of Sligh Avenue along Armenia. I had to chuckle when pulling up as there is a tattoo parlor right next door to the late-night Latin BBQ spot, and the guys from the tattoo shop were running into El Chuzo's for something to eat. Yup, this was gonna be a legendary meal! The first thing you should know is that the counter staff doesn't speak a lot of English, so there's bound to be a few comical moments when ordering if you don't speak Spanish very well. (Although I will confess that their English got much better after I stumbled through ordering in broken Spanish.... I'm just saying....) El Chuzo offers a number of different sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers, along with empanadas, homemade chorizo sausage, and chicarron (pork rind) for appetizers. For their main platters they offer Asados en Leña which translates to "roasted over charcoal", and you have your choice of chicken or pork kabobs, BBQ pork ribs, or butterflied strip steak with a couple of sides and sauces. I especially enjoyed their homemade sauces to complement the various dishes. I ordered the churrasco steak with a side of rice and plantains, and that came with a delicious garlic sauce, and the traditional chimichurri sauce. You'll also find lots of carry-out family-style platters of smoked meats. El Chuzo doesn't open until 12 Noon on most weekdays, and they are not open on Mondays. During the week they close at 10pm, but on Friday and Saturday they open at 4pm and stay open until 4:30am. There are only about 10 seats inside the small restaurant in a lunch counter-style set up, and there's another 5 or 6 seats outside the restaurant. Plan on this place being crowded!

Great option for Colombian fast food!! Chuzos, hot dogs, burgers and arepas are typical of street food carts in Colombia. They are also your first choice for late night/after-party cravings. You won't find tables but you can sit down at the counters against the wall...definitely not a romantic environment for couples, but you may fall in love with their tostones and their monstrous hot dogs and burgers. Some of the items looked that they were chargrilled and brought me back to those humble joints back in Colombia were you can find the best food. The place is sketchy, non-diet friendly, food tastes great, portions are big and prices are low... definitely a fit for some of my nights.

Why 4 stars? Because this had to be updated. --- --- --- Well, I planned on starting a very long list of out of town reviews, but I just realized that I never came back to update El Chuzo. After checking them out on an episode of "Eden Eats" I had to give the burger a try that was featured on the show. This is the messiest, juiciest, tastiest thing between two slices of bread. I can't believe I ever gave El Chuzo a 3-star review... I think it's more accurately knocking on the doorstep of 5-stars. I routinely crave this burger... and when I say routinely, yes I would cut my right arm off for one to be delivered to my house right now.

I totally agree with Occy V. El Chuzo BBQ offers authentic Spanish BBQ late at night. You just won't find many places like this in Tampa, and with the low amount of late-night spots, El Chuzo can satisfy your late-night craving for some quality food. Although El Chuzo BBQ is far less known than the Taco Bus, the place is still wildly popular among locals. The place was packed at 3AM. Still, you get your food quickly and there are plenty of options on the menu for less than $10. I tried their steak burger and it was excellent just like Occy described. You should give it a try when you get a late-night craving. All the locals were enjoying an apple soda called Postobon. I didn't try it, but from the popularity of it, I'm tempted to try it next time.

Actually, BBQ is only part of what they serve in this tiny to-go shop. Several other Colombian specials including hot dogs with the unique toppings/sauces and fried potato slivers. As other reviewers comment, the meat is smoked more than grilled and served whole rather than shredded, pulled or sliced. Some very nice combo meals at low price and empanadas to nibble while waiting for your order. Others note how late they stay open, but sometimes they also open late so a stop for dinner at 6 does not work. It is right across Armenia from the Bravo Market shopping plaza. I trust the other reviewer report about this being a great late-night spot. For me, my bed is the only good late-nigh spot.

I was pleasantly surprised of the flavor of their food as well as the quality. The service at 3am ish was as good as if one had gone in during the afternoon. Even after their debut on the Cooking Channel, El Chuzo has not increased their prices or lowered the quality. A must go for foodies!

This place is a beast. They are open VERY late, like past 4am and they make incredible sandwiches and burgers. This is not your typical BBQ joint its a Columbian one so they tend to smoke much differently in product and style. This is more steaks and heavier meats. If you like steak sandwiches or latin style burgers do yourself a favor and order the real thing. This is the EXACT thing I would get if I ordered it in South America or the Carribean. The major differences are the meat which is smoked and not grilled, the fries on top, raw cabbage, and of course the 2 kinds of sauces they put on it. The burger is made exactly the same way as well just with a smoked patty. Bomba !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this place is great for late night. open till 4:30 am. has a wide variety of columbian style bbq. if you don't like the columbian way, the sauce etc. just order the kabobs. they have no sauce and are only 5-6 bucks and delicious. its always a better option than a denny's or waffle house late night.

I don't go to late night restaurants very often but this place was referred to me about two years ago from a friend i been going there ever since This is hands-down the best late night restaurant in Tampa And the best price!!! You don't get a steak like that or a burger anywhere els in Tampa for that price

I always say I'm going to work my way through the menu, and then I seem to order the same thing - the salchipapa. This was the first item I tried here, and apparently that one taste was enough to create an addiction. For those who are a salchipapa virgin - it's a huge platter combining fries, hotdogs, and cheese, with a salsa of ketchup+mayo mixed in. At El Chuzo you supposedly can have one of six sauces mixed in, but when I ordered mine without the ketchup+mayo, it still was mixed in. Oh well, I still managed to eat every drop. Tostones are also excellent here, huge and crunchy. The empanada was just okay, as was the chicken kabob; both were a bit dry. So, I learned my lesson - stick with the salchipapa, and leave happy. I've never eaten indoors where they have bar stools lined up around the walls of the small store to encourage eating at the counters lining the walls. I have eaten at one of the two outside tables and enjoyed the scenic view of the parking lot and Armenia Avenue. Prices are very reasonable, and although food comes out slowly, it is definitely worth the wait.

  • Gigi S.

While this place is really slow, I don't mind the wait at all. It's totally worth it. I just love the deep grilled flavors of everything here, even the arepas, and I don't really care for arepas! As we waited we chilled with a house band that was just arriving for a late dinner, so the wait was actually fun! There's no seating, no cold beer, and little comfort other than knowing what you order will be delicious, and fairly priced. Those are odds I'm okay with! This place is well on the way to a five star review with the simple addition of just a few creature comforts..like a waiting area perhaps? This place is chevre!
