Outstanding dining experience! Amazing food and even better staff. Could not have asked for a better dinner. The owner goes out of his way to ensure that everything is perfect. Greeted with a handshake and left with a rose from the staff and yet another friendly encounter with the owner. Drinks were poured directly at the table, and food was fresh and plated beautifully.

While I will give credit to the wait staff and owner; their customer service is impeccable. The food quality though is slightly above your typical chain restaurants. My wife and I seriously believe there is a slight chance that they are using the poorest quality ingredients possible and covering it up by the ambiance and prestige of their service. I would recommend trying other places first and this place being one of those.. you tried it once and learned kind of things. Their prices are extremely high and although they state that the pasta is made by them, it has a texture and feel of traditional store brought quality.

This is my first review on Yelp as I feel everyone should be aware of some of the deceptive, con-like practices at Donatello. As my party of ten sat down, we were greeted with a sizable portion of bruschetta. Nobody ordered it, the management or the waiter simply placed it on the table, much like you would do with a bread basket - except we would find out this cost us $50.00. The waiter then offers a pasta sampler for the table, something for everybody to share. We accept, thinking it's something that would go in the center and we can all grab a little bit to sample what pasta to have for dinner. It ended up being a plate served to each person, at a total cost of $200.00. Now, my family isn't one to skimp on food. A $1000.00 bill is typical for a family outing, and we never complain about cost. However, I don't enjoy having to pay for food I didn't order. I also don't enjoy being misled about an offer from the house, only to find out it costs $200.00 at the end of the night. We're a large Italian family from Long Island. We willingly go out of our way to get the best food and service possible, no matter the cost. The food at Donatello's was amazing and reminded me of some of my Sicilian grandfather's best dishes - but the service was deceptive and sneaky. They could quick bag us for an easy $200.00 without hesitation, without explanation, and honestly that is not the Italian values I would expect from such a well-respected establishment. We all know the saying "Il pesce comincia a puzzare dalla testa" - the fish rots from the head. I hope the management and ownership of Donatello can rectify these shady practices, as their quality of food deserves a better quality of service.

My family has been going to Donatello for 20 years. We had dinner there again last night as my brother was in town and once again a fantastic dining experience. From the warm greeting as you enter to the professional waitstaff to the perfectly prepared food we enjoyed a great meal. My brother has been ordering the same entree for 20 years, it's not even on the menu anymore for years, but the fine folks at Donatello never blink an eye when he asks for it to be made for him.

This place is truly a gem of the original tampa culture. This family-style, upscale Italian restaurant also features opera singers who going around the restaurant from table to table singing classical songs. They also feature a full bar and live music inside. This place gets pretty busy due to its popularity and valet will have to be your only option. The food is amazing! All the dishes appear to be made from scratch and taste like someone's Italian grandmother had made it. The prices are a bit higher than typical restaurant. Saving these moments for a special occasions/dating is recommended. The host was very friendly and affectionate as would be expected in the style of restaurant. The staff was also friendly and quick. On your way out, they hand every female a rose, which I thought was very cute. I would recommend this place to everyone!

We went on a night when they had some live Jazz music, piano, a singer and a trap set. Right off the bat we were personally greeted with a handshake and a smile! I swear we felt like we stepped back in time! The Host was fantastic and recommended we have a drink in the bar while they were finishing our table. The music was amazing the atmosphere very cozy and beautiful! Honestly from the outside I would have never gone here! They seated us for dinner and I knew right off the bat that this was going to score huge points with the wife! Huge wine list and drink menus! Appetizers that I could just go back for alone! My wife had Veal & I had Ossobuco both simply out of this world! We went back to the bar for coffee and desert and listen to the wonderful music! The night was a total success! We can not wait to go back!

A year ago I was traveling to New York each week. I don't recall anywhere in new york having better service or tastier ravioli .There were only 2 of us at dinner but we could not make are minds up so we ordered 3 dinners and 3 desserts to share . The staff worked it all out for us. I will be back on a weekly basis . Dont miss this spot.

5 stars! And they certainly earned every one! If you want to enjoy a night of upscale dining and being waited on expertly, you must give Donatello a try! The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. It looks a little run down actually, which is what prevented me from coming here for all these years! Big mistake! The food is absolutely amazing and the ambiance is wonderful! Dimly lit and romantic, and all the other diners are well behaved and using their indoor voices, which, even at other nice restaurants there's usually always that one obnoxious person or table. Not here! As for the food, we ordered the calamari appetizer, which was delicious! It could have used a bit of salt, but I like my food pretty salty. My husband thought they were perfect. We also got a small Caesar salad, which was good, but I don't think I'd ever call a Caesar salad from anywhere "great", so that's nothing against them. For our entree I got the Dolce Vita veal with a mushroom and truffle sauce and my husband ordered the veal shank with Marsala sauce. Both were mind blowingly delicious! I can't even describe how incredibly it was- flavor, texture, temperature, everything was perfection. We also had a slice of cheesecake. I'm partial to NY style, but theirs was, of course, Italian style. The flavor was great, but I'm just not a fan of the Italian style texture. I'd skip the dessert next time. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the service- it was absolute perfection. All the servers were friendly, helpful, and professional. I hope they're paid well in addition to their tips because they so deserve it! Absolutely impeccable. One of the best dining experiences of my entire life!

I've heard other people refer to this place as "Old School Italian Fine Dining" and I couldn't agree more. You are treated like royalty from the second you walk through the front door. You don't see a lot of restaurants nowadays where the host will shake your hand and your server will pull out your chair for you...Definitely a nice change from the uptight and unfriendly service you get in most places in this day and age. The food is incredible and the portion size was just right..I was full by the end of my meal but not that " I immediately regret eating that much" kind of full. Try their Tortellini dish..it's to die for! Don't expect a cheap dinner here as the food is very pricy...well worth it though! Perfect place to celebrate any special occasion.

I've been here countless times over the years while visiting family in the area. This place is superb from top to bottom. Food, service, environment...you can't go wrong. Pasta, seafood, steak, dessert...I've seen several Yankees here during spring training. Honestly, the food is just as good or better than many places in Little Italy in NYC.

We went to Donatello's because a friend of ours (Hi Leo!) from the Wheaton Sport Center recommended it. We love Leo, so we went The restaurant and I got off to a bad start. They have a parking lot, but close it so that you are forced to use the Valet service (grrr...) I don't know what it is about Valet service.. but, in most cases I don't like it (it's not the tipping, I'm a very good tipper) especially when it is not necessary.. We parked on the street around the corner. This is an old style, classic upscale Italian restaurant. There are fresh roses on the table, the service is professional and cordial.. we should have dressed up a little bit, but were never made to feel that way. I ordered the: 14oz. Medaglioni Di Manzo Alla Pizzaiola which is two 7oz Filet Mignon's drenched in their red sauce. I ate every bite, they were done medium/medium rare and were absolutely delicious, at about $35 I felt that this was a pretty good value. Lisa had: Petto Di Pollo Donatello and I think that it was close to $27... she said it was good (had mushrooms so I wouldn't go near it) but didn't feel the same love for the value. So, other than my crankiness at the parking situation this was a good experience, I may not rush to go back... but I won't avoid it either

Cozy interior, excellent servers, good portions, lots of flavor. Went on a Wednesday night. They don't have much parking, so they have a valet stand. I got the tortellini ($28) and enjoyed it. Attire seems to be dressy--we were wearing business casual, so that worked well. Would definitely bring a date here.

5 stars all the way! This is my favorite restaurant not only in Tampa but anywhere. I moved away to Boston and this is what I look forward to most about coming back to tampa. The food is to die for, I can't even pick from all of the options when I come since I want to eat everything every time I am there. Carmelo is an amazing waiter if you can get him. I love the old school charm of this place, and can't wait for my next visit home so I can enjoy the pasta again!

I will start by saying...we cannot wait to come back! I read some reviews prior to going that indicated it was too pricey for the food and experience...I disagree. It is a high end restaurant. We deem it as a special occasion restaurant and worth the splurge. The service was warm, professional and amazing. The owner was present and an absolute kind, engaging soul who clearly was making sure the experience was what it should be. We started with the bruschetta - loved it. Then a couple people had soup and a couple of us had the baked oysters - all was amazing. For entree's we had the steak in tomato sauce, the Lamb for two and one of our party had a veal dish but substituted chicken. We all devoured every bit of it. I partook in the lamb for two....best lamb shank I have ever had. My friend who had the steak said she would eat it on every single visit (I would explore other menu items for fun personally :) ). The setting and restaurant environment is a bit "aged" but it is quiet, romantic and a great place. We will be back!

This place is overrated. I've been twice and dropped $300+ each meal without trying. However, I do not remove stars for cost so here's the simple truth: you can do so much better in this area. This is the center of town, near the intersection of Kennedy and Dale Mabry and you have access to all that is delicious in South Tampa to choose from. There is no reason to choose Donatello unless you are just into bragging about how much money you dropped on dinner to your friends. The place is tiny, dirty and very old. There is some neat nostalgia with all of the photos of celebrities when you enter (think every broadcaster, coach or football player to play at Raymond James Stadium), but again I think this solidifies my point that this place rests on its laurels and is living in the past. The food is fine and above average, but the place is not appealing to eat in.

3.5 stars? Those people are out of their damn minds. Pots not even legal in FL yet. In all seriousness, this place is by far the best Italian restaurant I've ever had the PRIVILEGE of enjoying. Great service, out of this world food, generous portions, we will be adding this to our regular rotation.

Fantastic service. Waitstaff is attentive and polite. Owner is well presented and makes his way around to all tables to ask how you are doing. Presentation was great. Setting the table for you, placing your napkin. Changing out utensils after each course. Food is spot on - we had mussels, Caesars, filet, and the steak piziola. Mussels were tender, and perfect for 2. The Caesar is GREAT - anchovies are chopped into the dressing.... Real homemade dressing and it shines. The filet is one of the best, and the piziola was fall apart tender. Great place. Brings you back to a time of feeling proper. You want to turn off your phone and enjoy a cocktail, a glass of wine, then a nightcap. The bill is printed on a FULL price of paper. Again - attention to detail. My wife was given a rose and my hand was shaken when we left. This is a lost art, and "established" steakhouses and restaurants should take notice. When you are dining (2+ hours, multiple courses) you should never feel rushed, never feel like a burden, and feel welcomed. Donatello's is that type of place. I highly recommend and will go back when in town!

Not all that's it's cracked up to be. Very poor quality food. Have had better at other inexpensive italian restaurants. The dessert "cart" was out in the open which was very unappetizing and although the ambiance was nice, the food again, was pretty terrible. Terrible is putting it nicely

This place is almost definitely the place to go for Italian food the the greater Tampa area. Yes, it's pricy, but it's really not that different from a steakhouse, and at least the food tastes good. I originally came here intending to take advantage of the dine Tampa Bay deal, but my husband didn't like the set menu, so we opted for the normal menu. The decor is very dated, but the service was appropriately old fashioned. The maitre'd greeted us and shook our hands. We were seated in a corner booth, and he pulled the table out for both me and my husband, and he placed the napkin on my lap. The waiter was very attentive and memorized our orders. He also recited the dessert menu from memory. Servers said "grazie" and "prego." I like those details. We told him that we brought our own wine, so he brought out a decanter, and he did not flinch when we told him it was a 1967 Bordeaux and would likely need some cork surgery. Corkage is a pricy $30/bottle, but it was still a deal given our bottle's worth. We started with the prosciutto and melon. The melon was perfectly sweet, and the prosciutto is the best I've ordered at a restaurant in Tampa. We then shared a Caesar salad. My husband thought it was a little garlicky. For the main course, I had the veal Dulce Vita, and it was fantastic. My husband does not usually like veal, but he loved this dish. It was served with some forgettable vegetables. My husband had the risotto that was on special. He found it a little salty. For dessert, I had the ricotta cheesecake, and it was great. My husband had gelato and an espresso, which was served with lemon peel, a detail I haven't seen since moving to Tampa. I think I have found my place for good Italian food in Tampa.

From the warm and genuine welcome by the restaurant's owner Gino, to the elegant environment, superlative wait staff, and the fantastic food this is the epitome of what a fine Italian dining should be like. The valet parking service is the perfect accoutrement.

Ridiculously sub par, Caprese salad was fine. House wines are $15 a glass. Veal Scallopini special was $40 and bland and unfulfilling. Shrimp Caprese was bland and came with some very uninteresting red sauce. My date and i shared a half order of the Cannelloni Donatello and to our surprise it actually had some flavor. All dishes would have benefited from adding just a little salt! Overall $150 was terribly overspent...so much so that we decided to go to Cheesecake Factory for dessert.

Excellent old world cuisine with impeccable service. Subdued ambiance for family events, romantic night, or special occasions--or just a great meal. The PATE is superb and house salad with market fresh greens is awesome. I enjoyed the seafood soup entree with fish and shellfish galore while my husband devoured the Italian steak in cognac sauce. World's best housemade cheesecake and tiramisu. Service is incredible withe great attention to detail.

I have heard so many mixed reviews of Donatello's, a lot of people and mentioned that they are just outdated so I decided to try for myself. I made reservations for a lovely Thursday night dinner. As I arrived the valet was accommodating and so was the host. Yes the Decour is outdated but boy is it a classic style and the service is next to none. This is by far the tastiest Italian food I have ever had!!!! The waiters were extremely attentive, accommodating and friendly. I can't say enough about how delicious the dishes were.

Great service, good food(even by NY standards), and great environemtn. the service was very professional and attentive. The food was great but it is expensive! The portions were okay but not very generous. It is prob one of the top restaurants in tampa. it prob one of the top 3 italian restaurants in tampa. The atomosphere is okay. I saw some Yankee players eating there.

I so don't understand the positive/stellar reviews on this place...maybe we just ordered the wrong food but nothing can compensate for the musty old smell and unclean feeling of the dining room. It literally has not been changed in eons!! The decor is just plain 70s tacky. I have to say the service was impeccable as most reviews say...but the food was just ok. Scampi was oily and bland. Overall if I'm dropping $100 plus bucks on a meal I'll go to Ocean Prime, or someplace more modern.

Did not disappoint. Excellent real deal Italian food. Similar from when we went to Italy. We had the calamari - one of the best I've had - very simple, fresh, made from baby squids, and delicious. The lobster pasta was cooked to perfection (al dente) and the angel hair pasta was very good. It's old school pasta without the butter and fat additives like some places put in. The tiramisu was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive. He gave me a rose when before we left which was a nice gesture. The decor is old school that looks like it hasn't been changed since the 60s, but that's part of the charm. You get quality food for what you pay for. Being from NY, I'm used to high prices, but I thought Donatellos was a bit overpriced (except my lobster pasta was worth it- $40 w/whole lobster). They are on par with high end steakhouses and they were good, but not memorable. But I guess you go for the overall fine dining experience.

The people who said they get better meals at The Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill should be taken out of circulation. Sure, it is expensive, and sure, the portions aren't spilling over the plate, but the pasta to meat ratio is spot on. Most of the time I don't eat Italian because it is all bread and pasta, no protein. We get the Veal Tortelloni and it is superb! They are regular human portions fit for a healthy adult. We always have a great time! This place is an institution!

Had a gift certificate for $100 that prompted our visit. Greeted warmly by the Host and seated quickly with our reservations made on Yelp. We are a pretty classy couple, but I just couldn't get over the vibe that we shouldn't be here and we were very out of place. Extensive wine list, which you should expect to pay approx 3 times retail value for but that is to be expected for retail dining. Food was forgettable and overpriced. I would give this place another shot, but only on someone else's tab.

I have to say that this restaurant takes the cake for Italian food in Tampa. I have tried all of the others and there is just something about this one that is so tasty! It is certainly on the costly side, but worth every penny for special occasions. We really enjoyed the veal scallopini and chicken piccata. We also had the ham tortellini soup to start and it was good as well. Our favorite thing about this restaurant, however, is the bolognese sauce with angel hair. The sauce is to die for!!!! I usually do not eat onions and chunks of tomato, but this was a nice puree with the perfect spice blend and the taste was sooooo good, I have been trying to replicate it for years! The environment was very laid back and the owners are actually in the restaurant serving you. All of the women leave with a flower that they give you upon exit and they have done this for years. The really want to make sure you had a wonderful experience and they take price in the quality of their food. Overall, if you want some really good Italian, give Donatello a try.

DO NOT COME HERE!!! The food is extremely overpriced and you can get a much better meal from almost anywhere for a much lower price. In fact I had a much better meal at the maccoroni grill. I felt like I was being taken advantage of and will NEVER come back. If you are in Tampa, find somewhere else to go.

This is a Tampa standard for Italian food. Frankly we like the quality of food and overall experience of Bella's better, but Donatello's must be reckoned with. Have eaten there several times and have been satisfied. The decor, service and menu try to impress so you feel you got your money's worth since it is definitely pricey. It is well-decorated but a bit showy, old-hat & stuffy. The formally dressed waiters are smooth & attentive, and one was particularly attentive to our pretty grown daughter. The apps, entrees & desserts were fine, but not especially memorable. Really admired the classy bar where you can have a quiet drink while waiting for your party to assemble. Now that Malio's has moved uptown, and Iavarone's is up on the north side, Donatello's is the last of the luxury Italian showplaces where you wonder if your tip to the valet parking supports a Sicilian fraternal organization.

The best service and tiramisu in Tampa bay! Celebrated my 25th birthday in the lounge with the wonderful Kim behind the bar!! Amazing! You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
