This is an update in regards to Thomas T's. review. You sound completely pretentious and like you should be dining somewhere in SoHo, not a small family run operation that has character and isn't completely corporate. "The prints were nailed to the walls"... wow, seems that you were coming into this review looking for things to pick apart. Speaking as a guest who has dined at this place since they opened TWENTY years ago, I have never seen such ignorance. Also in regards to your wife being a "pastry chef", she must not know that you can only put the wellington in the oven so long with out the steak cooking faster than the pastry, that's why the owner recommends they be ordered Medium-rare to Medium temperature.... to allow the pastry to cook. If you had put it back in the oven after being cut in half, the steak is going to cook much faster, but apparently you don't have the common sense to realize that. Enjoy the rest of your dining experiences, I'm sure with the attitude you have, you wouldn't realize a decent meal if it landed right in front of you.

My final farewell to the restaurant owner and chef for their retirement of this restaurant was last night dinner. After 21 year of long running, the Cafe European will close their restaurant. The last night of dinner will be 8/1/2015. After that it will be close I met the new owners of the restaurant there too. They have not decided what they going to do yet but will open a different restaurant. The new restaurant will be different than the existing restaurant. Thanks to Suzy and Mike for choosing Tampa for 21 years. This is the restaurant I love and the farewell is last night dinner. They have one more night which is tonight. For 6 years we have get to know about their restaurant, we enjoy Suzy delicates chef skill. You will not find a British who can cook like this in town. The best dish is the Beef Wellington that with the puffy dough and seasoning red wine sauce and mushroom is the best in town. If you watch Gordon Ramsay Hell Kitchen show, he always test the young chef for this dish. Difficult dish to cook and make harmony of two worlds. I like their lamp chop appetizer is one of the best in town. Very consistent every time we're here. I wish them very good journey of their break from restaurant business. Farewell my friends.

Nice place for an afternoon, not sure about their specialty. They have a little bit of everything, I do not see a connection with the name of the place. The service is nice. Quite place for lunch

Café European is a hit, and a surprising little find directly across from the main gates of the University of Tampa. The café is located in the same small triangular-shaped block as Oxford Exchange and Mise en Place, but it faces out onto Hyde Park Avenue, and it's less than a block south of Kennedy Boulevard. The café has a very relaxed atmosphere which makes for a great place to have a business luncheon that is near downtown Tampa. Most of the tables are 4-tops, and the servers are very good about unobtrusively refilling drinks and clearing plates without stopping conversation at the table. The lunch menu is very diverse with soups, entrée salads, sandwiches, and full-on lunch entrées which seem to highlight various cuisines of Europe. Everything is homemade and prepared daily on the premise, with carryout available. For my lunch I had the cilantro chicken sandwich which included a boneless, skinless grilled breast of chicken that had been marinated in a cilantro lime sauce along with two strips of bacon, fresh mozzarella, and chipotle mayo all pressed onto Cuban bread. My sandwich came with a side of homemade soup, a small tossed salad, or a side of French fries. I opted for the homemade potato leek soup which was excellent. Lunch hours are 11am - 2pm Monday - Friday, and then the café re-opens at 5:30pm for dinner. The dinner menu adds small plate appetizers, and some very elegant specialty entrées including Beef Wellington, pan-fried trout, rack of lamb, and coq au vin. Café European has been opened for 19 years in this location, and they've created a charming Euro café with imported beers and wines to compliment their dishes. This is certainly a nice spot to keep in mind for a low-key business luncheon.

If you want some great fish & chips, this is the place. But even better, swap the chips for the mashed potatoes. Fish & Mash!

We loved the Euro-ambiance for lunch. We went with their special--mushroom and chicken crepe and it was divine! Delicate & perfectly seasoned. We had the icky sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It was warm and heavenly. Great house dressing on the accompanying salad and a nice sangria. Entrees ran about $10. The décor is "ruddy" small town European but clean. We did have to hunt down our bill but the fine food almost made that worth it.

I have eaten at Cafe European for about 15 years as I work at UT. It is a convenient choice and much more. The lunch menu has a good array of choices at good prices. I have had their salads, sandwiches, specials and just about every meal over the years. I have also had several of the desserts - the Crumble is the best of all. Not once have I had a bad meal. Service is always good, especially for lunchtime and having to get back to work. The owners are there everyday; they are friendly and eager to please. There is a group of regulars - including many faculty - who also appreciate the quality and service.

Great Awesome Food. Celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary and my husbands birthday, couldn't have chosen a better place. The museum referred us their restaurant and we decided to walk and check other options and so glad we did... The "Cafe European" is a must to visit. We had the N.Y. Strip with peppercorn sauce and wine sauce with mushrooms. OMG, the best! Even the best red cabbage! I'm Austrian and never was able to find anyone who could make it to my liking...this place has a beautiful variety of foods.... The bread pumpkin bread pudding... All homemade food. I never write a review but must say we had the best dinner celebration. Reasonable pricing. We hope to visit again in the near future should we come to Tampa. On another note: Restrooms need to be updated. Cafe European located on....113 Hyde Park Ave, Tampa, Florida ...813-254-9458 Is a MUST to visit.

I just had the Michael Jordan of desserts at Cafe European. The icky sticky toffee pudding is like blue meth for foodies. It's too damn good. Best dessert I've ever had. Hands down. I also got the calamari and the night special - a light pasta of shrimp and scallops. That was all pretty good, but not to die for. The dessert ended any chance at a less-than-five score though. Also, our server was spectacular. Great customer service with a smile and plenty of helpful tips. Love this gem in Hyde Park, will return!

My wife and I chose this restaurant to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. We both wanted beef wellington and after a quick search on Google, found the previous review listed below. Unfortunately we were not impressed. After arriving to find the dining room completely empty at approx 5:55pm on Saturday, we were first seated on the northern side of the dining room where we immediately noticed the foul stench of raw sewage. The waiter, whom we presume is the owner (pictured in a previous review with two females), came over and when we questioned him about the smell he stated he didn't smell anything. We were then moved to the opposite side of the dining room which smelled much better. We ordered the Chicken & Artichoke Flatbread for starters and two rare beef wellingtons both with mash. My wife had the salad and I chose the veggies. After taking our order the waiter brought out a bread basket with three rolls and some prepackaged butter. Oddly enough, the basket was lined with a coffee filter... yes, a coffee filter. We thought this was a little weird but the rolls were fresh out of the oven and tasted great. I should mention that they were store bought frozen rolls, but still good. While waiting for our food I started to notice the decor. The choice of decor style wasn't so bad as the quality of it. The prints (nailed to the wall) were stained and the cornered were damaged. The walls looked dirty with food spots on them. The furniture was some sort of hodgepodge picked from local yard sales. None of the tables and chairs matched each other, at least on our side of the dining room. One table even had a plastic green tablecloth. The Flatbread came out shortly after and it was absolutely delicious. A thin crispy crust, topped with the perfect amount of cheese, sautéed chicken, artichoke, green peppers & onions. A short time later, my wife's salad came out and it was good, and served with homemade anchovy vinaigrette. After a little wait (it's 6:35 by now) the entrees came out. The mashed potatoes were decent, but a little heavy on the garlic for me. I wish they had not been served like a scoop of ice-cream on the plate though. For garnish on the mash a sprig of fresh rosemary was stuck into the top resembling a lone tree growing at the top of a hill. My veggies were very disappointing. I was served steamed broccoli and boiled cabbage. Maybe this was how Europeans take their veggies? The worst part of all, they had no seasoning. Not even salt. Now the biggest disappointment of the evening, the beef wellington. We ordered them rare but they came med-rare/med. Even worse, the puff pastry was raw in part. The cook/chef had gathered the pastry at the top and bunched it together, virtually guaranteeing that we would be served raw dough. We called out waiter over who immediately blamed us for ordering both of them rare. A quick witty comeback from my wife stating we ordered the steak rare not the pastry, quick squashed his excuse and he took the plates stating he would put them back in the oven. As he reentered the kitchen I heard the distinct sound of the door being kicked open. Guess he was a little pissed... A short time later the plates were back out and the waiter was gone again. He didn't seem to want to stick around to make sure they were correct this time. After a quick inspection we noticed nothing had changed. The pastry was still raw, but a little hotter. At this point, another waitress (who had started her shift while we waited for our entrees) came over. My wife explained the pastry was still raw and pulled a piece to show her, it stretched a few inches before snapping back like an old rubber band. She tried to take the plates saying she would put them in the oven again when my wife told her we would like to leave and to just bring a check for the food we had already eaten. She went and told our waiter/owner and he came over. My wife explained again about the raw dough when the waiter again said it was because we ordered them rare and then... get this... said that even though he had put them in the oven again, once they are cut open "it doesn't always work". Did he expect us to believe that once it's cut in half; somehow the oven loses its effect on the pastry? Maybe we should have told him my wife is a pastry chef and knows a thing or two about baking puff pastry. He then went on to tell us that it was the most popular dish. Only after signing the credit card receipt did we get a "I'm sorry you didn't like our food. Everybody loves it." from the owner sounding slightly sarcastic. We told him the Flatbread was great and we really enjoyed it. We left and went somewhere else. All in all I was disappointed. For $21.99 I expected much higher quality. This restaurant seems like a good candidate for Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

I love Cafe European! You instantly feel like you are in Europe when you walk into this quaint family owned restaurant. The food is amazing and everything is homemade. Their soups are always different and are some of the best soups I have ever had! Beef Wellington is my favorite meal there! Their lunch is delicious, well priced and unique. Everyone can find something on the menu! The service is personable and you will always be remembered! Cafe European is a place you can come to escape the hussle and bussle of the city and relax with a nice meal.

I came here after arriving in downtown Tampa at 8 pm. Not expecting to find decent food this late in the day, I checked Yelp and found Cafe European. I had a flat iron steak with a peppercorn sauce, absolutely perfect at medium doneness. I hate to use the cliche, but the peppercorn sauce was "to die for" and there was enough sauce for every bite of steak. The mashed potatoes were superb and the mix of fresh grilled zucchini and carrots went perfectly with this meal. Two glasses of Malbec and a Pot de Creme au chocolat later I felt like a fat cat (literally)! The owner was extremely friendly and helpful. The whole experience made up for an otherwise frustrating evening and put me back into a gracious mood. Thank you for the unexpected pleasure!

I'm new to Tampa and was walking around UT area with a friend, yelping away, trying to find the oxford exchange. Unfortunately it was closed. Frustrated and starving, my friend and I randomly hopped on into cafe European. I yelped and decided to give it a go. Upon entering, we were greeted by a nice man. We sat and ordered the special of the day which was cilantro shrimp and scallops atop a bed of linguini....Sooo yum. The salad it came with was surprisingly delicious. The dressing was amazing and super flavorful. Thankfully we saved room for dessert and per our lovely servers (Maria)recommendation, we ordered the sticky icky whatever it is it is the absolute best dessert I've ever had. If you like butterscotch or toffee, this is amaaaazing. Overall this dining experience was so lovely. The music was fun too. It may not look all fancy and contemporary but do not pass this place up!

The food is excellent. For that extra special night out go on the first Saturday of the month for flamenco night. Met a regular that has only missed four flamenco nights in the last 15 years! Recommend Calamari, nice and crispy, comes with the usual Marinaro & a jalapeno sauce. Beef Wellington is excellent. Icky sticky dessert will definitely make you fat as it says on the menu.
