The new style, new location Outback Steakhouse opened Friday, and I just had to go there to heal. It is a huge improvement over the old store, and if you stopped going to Outback because the old one had become just too yucky but you like Outback Steakhouses, you should try this new location. I am an accidental Aficionada of Outback Steakhouses. I do not like corporate chain restaurants, but for many years my job took me all over the country where my overnight dining options were, Outback, Chili's, Friday's, and Cracker Barrel. I call these chains and a few others, "the usual suspects." I know them better than anyone should. On the surface, the Outback Steakhouse experience was very consistent. Of all "the usual suspects" I felt most comfortable among the surfboards, and boomerangs, and didgeridoos, and for a married female business traveler, Outback's bar offered the best selection of men, some of whom were business travelers, not looking to get laid. Still, more often than not I had to explain at the end of the evening, "just because I talked and laughed and shared a desert with you, it does not mean that I want to go to bed with you." I know from my colleges, men and women without hall passes often make very bad choices out on the road that are forever corrosive to their souls and marriages. Hall pass couples mostly do not make these mistakes. It is not extramarital sex that causes regret and self-loathing, it is the betrayal, it is the broken promise, it is the secrets. We went to the new Outback for happy hour and dinner. Our waitress, Brooke, was personable, attentive, and astute. Loved Brooke. 5 stars! The terms of happy hour have changed since my day - no more 2 for 1 - but the drinks were as corporate by the book as I remembered. My husband ordered my usual, the Victoria Filet, and I, worried about flashbacks triggering my work PTSD, ordered a burger. The best thing about the new Outback is the floor! No more stinky, nasty carpet! I would not go to the old Outback in the last few years because of the smell of old stinky restaurant carpet; I think it was a biohazard. The lighting and decor in the new Outback are also so much easier on your eyes, and the sound is better even with the hard floors. The Filet was a little overdone but tender. My husband ordered it rare; it came out on the well side of medium rare, but not over seasoned. This is not a typical for Outback. Outback can generally pull off a rare filet and they generally over-season, but as was explained by the Manager, she has a lot of new people. My burger on the other hand was ordered medium rare, and the first one came up more done than well done. Astute Brook recognized that it was not going down well, and asked me if I would like another before the big crowd hit. Most wait people would just ask if I wanted a box. Brook gets another point. Brook... 6 stars! So they put in another burger, and soon the manager came out and offered a free wine. Give me free wine and I can forgive almost anything. However we actually got billed for the free wine at the end, but it is the thought that counts. The replacement burger was nearly a clone of the first one. The Manager comes back out and she does not need to ask, she says, "well that is not Medium Rare!" She offers a third burger, but in my day we would call the third burger the "Loogie Burger." That is just suiside. So she says, "of course we will comp your meal." Which was nice, but what she meant was they would comp my burger, that is not exactly comping the meal. And then remember she also comped me a wine, which did not arrive until we asked for it a second time, and we paid for when the bill came. The burger was overcooked twice and it was very dry, and I always forget the arbitrarily weird construction, and the buns are always disappointing, like grocery store buns that have been left out too long. This is a place that does such a good job with the sweet as cake bread that comes out hot soft and fresh, and they totally drop the ball on buns. Go figure. And the fries! Outback STRUGGLES with fries! Almost always, they are over seasoned. These were not, but, the fries were cold and limp. Cold limp fries are a problem at Outback's everywhere. Lets add up the damage. Crappy fries, Complementary drink that we paid for, two failed burgers, stale buns, limp fries, no more 2 for 1 happy hour??? So what do you think? 1 star? 2 stars? Nope. They still get 4 stars! How can this be, you ask? Because I am rating them against a lifetime of experience eating at Outback all over the country, and when you take into consideration, first day, the tenderness of the filet, intention to deliver good, and don't forget the hard wood floor, and better sound and lighting. this experience was 4 stars relative to the average Outback experience. Once they get over opening jitters, they will be a 5 star Outback.

Love the new outback, it is much more open with a more relaxed atmosphere. I absolutely adore the outdoor patio as well. Food is delicious as always and the staff is great (:

New location was nothing spectacular, unfortunately. Very few parking spaces on the property (4 are handicapped), so most people have to park in the Best Buy lot and walk (and cross in front of cars). Waited 70 min for a table outside where there are few chairs. Was offered some cheese fries in small plastic cups periodically while we waited, but no beverage. Tables inside were on the small size to seat 4. Vegetable side was tiny, & shrimp were rather underwhelming. 6 oz steak was very tasty, though, but what dining establishment would send a plate out looking like mine? (See pic.) Our waiter was very friendly and he hustled, but he simply had too many tables, which is the fault of management. Our water glasses went unfilled for quite a while, & it took even longer to get our bill...then longer to have our checks returned. The So. East door (exit only) to the outside is more convenient than going back to the front when it's time to leave, but we found ourselves having to walk in the road between Outback and Firestone to the east. No sidewalk! U literally step from the doorway into the street & pray u don't lose a leg! It's an accident waiting to happen. Can say I won't be returning...just more chain-style food that wasn't worth the cost. I had really hoped to like the place:(

Went for a late lunch on a Sunday. Wait was not bad at all. Blooming onion was delicious. Food was good. Slightly slow on a drink refill. Overall good restaurant. Will return again.
