First, I want to say that this was my first time eating Korean food so I am no expert. But, if this is why Korean food tastes like then I will be content with never trying it again. Second, the sushi service is S-L-O-W. It was a Friday night before a football game here and the place did seem crowded but we waited about 40 minutes for our sushi and upon receiving our entrees she told us they were about to start making it. We went ahead and canceled the order since we like eating our sushi like an appetiZer. Sadly, I cannot comment in quality of the sushi. I ordered the bulgogi which was thinly sliced beef in some sort of Korean sauce. This is why my review is so low, the met tasted bland and ha a weird burnt/smoky aftertaste, but not in a good way. It wa rather off putting to he honest and I basically ate the dish because I had already paid an I'm not the type to make a big deal about my food. The bento box came with white rice which was bland bc after all it is just white rice. Also, I got a dumpling which was delicious. Might've been the best one I have ever had bc it was crunchy all around. It reminded me of a mini empanada type treat. It also had tofu which I am not a big fan of. My girlfriend got a bento box a well with thin beef and noodles, I forgot what It was called exactly. She hated it and upon trying it myself it was just as mine; blank and weird after taste. The sushi selection was pretty decent but Overall, I don't see us going back there again.

Nice little place, good service, good food(sushi), decent prices.

I love this place!! Great sushi and great environment. I go every weekend with my buddies for a couple beers! We love the Sapporo & Asahi beer from Japan! I love their Florida Roll & Japanese Bagel roll both with cream cheese inside! 5 star rating and must go if you are in Gainesville!

Best sushi place in town. The Peter Pan is so good and as for korean food I would recommend Haemul Pajeon and Doldot Bibimbap. The waiters, Donald and Felipe, are very nice and helpful. Size and price are great deal.

Best sushi in Florida. I've been all around and this has to be the best. I like that it's so cozy and homie. Felipe always gives us the best suggestions.

We were in from out of town and saw the great rating and decided to give it a shot. It did not disappoint. The service was as good as the food. The flaming rolls were a lot of fun and delicious. Definitely a must try.

Great sushi... great service at affordable prices! One of my favorite sushi dishes is the tuna bowl.

This is my favorite sushi place in Gainesville. I first visited Miya a few years ago when they were offering a Groupon. My husband and I each got two sushi rolls. The fish was fresh, the rice was perfectly sticky, the service was great, and the food was delicious overall. We have been back several times since that first visit and are never disappointed. Miya's sushi easily rivals Dragonfly's, but the price is way better. Also, the place is sort of an unknown hole in the wall, so we never have to wait for a table, and usually the place is nearly empty. (It fills up a little more on Friday/Saturday nights, but again, I've never had to wait to be seated.) On my most recent visit this past weekend, we noticed that the menu had changed. In addition to sushi, Miya now offers Korean barbecue! I was nervous about trying the new Korean menu, so I went with sushi, but my husband tried a vegetarian bi bim bap bowl. Not only was the egg beautifully fried and the bowl HUGE (so much food!) and delicious, he also received the traditional Korean salads (cucumber salad, pickled daikon and carrot, kimchi, etc.) beforehand. I tried them all, and they were soooo good. We were so impressed with the taste and how much food he got, but we were even more baffled by the price: $9 for all this food! While we love Garlic & Ginger, Miya may now be our go-to spot for Korean food. The combination of price and quality cannot be beat. And, as always, their sushi was fresh and delicious, and the service was friendly and prompt. If you have not been, you must try it!

I'm giving it 4 stars because it was very good. Service: Our server was very polite and kind. Atmosphere: It was a bit dark, the ceiling light was not on, but the decorations was very calming. Price: very reasonable. Food: The food was decent. I like the unique selection the menu had to offer. I got the noodle soup, but I thought it was a bit too salty. The yellowtail sashimi I ordered was very small but it was fresh.

So short and simply: I've been to this place a few times (probably about 5) and every time I've went I've usually enjoyed their food and service. Now, that being said, this place isn't perfect. I've had moments where service has been slower than I'd like, or the fly in your food moment(which is always an unpleasant experience). Each of those moments, service has taken note of that and done something to soften those blows such as apologizing, providing food on the house, or comping a bit on the bill. Overall, good food, nice yet slower service, a tad pricy.

After a couple hours of office supply shopping with my girl we came to Miya Sushi for lunch. Had the house Bento box and Salmon bowl. Good traditional fare and fresh flavors. Good friendly service. Will come back.

Layout of the restaurant is very awkward. Then the power started to go out... Not once, not twice, but literally a dozen times. They had a "special" V-day menu, one they adhered to so strictly it was irritating. My wife wanted to order the California roll, but the waitress insisted that we must order the entire "special" combo to get the California roll. Thumbs down.

A friend and I were both craving sushi and decided to try this place on a whim since neither of us had been before. The wait staff was nice enough and helpful answering any questions that we had about the menu. My friend and I both ordered the Scorpion Roll. While we were waiting, the waiter brought both of us each a bowl of miso soup. The soup was a nice touch, but it tasted kind of sour, as if they'd been using the same batch for more than one day. The tofu pieces were falling apart inside the broth, which I've seen before in miso soup. The only thing that I could tell was fresh were the green onions added to the top. The rolls came out in about fifteen minutes and we both dug in because we were starving. The first few pieces were fine, and the flavor was great, but about halfway through the roll, I noticed that some of the pieces in the roll were becoming a little more hard to chew. The peel of the shrimp in both of our rolls had been left on in preparation, which left large, hard (or impossible) to chew pieces in the sushi. I don't know if this is done regularly, but it ruined the roll for the both of us. We were both left picking peels out of our sushi to try to make the rest of it edible. In hindsight, I should've sent it back, but both of us were already halfway through our plates. The rest of the menu includes some Korean dishes that I'd be willing to try, but overall I probably would not be returning for the sushi. Not impressed, especially for the $13 price tag.

Great food and company at Miya. All sushi rolls tasted awesome. I ate to much too. I will go back if ever again in Gainesville.

Ordered 2 sushi rolls and a miso soup for delivery (using gainesville to go). The poor delivery driver waited AN HOUR AND TWENTY MINUTES at the restaurant for my food, after already giving ample time for the food to be made. I ordered at 6:45 pm and at 8:38 pm he left the restaurant. Totally unacceptable. The girl on the phone at Miya says there was a "mix-up". What kind of sushi mix up could possibly take two hours to fix?

Loved the sushi i ordered, it even had flames around it! Good taste and great employees. They could have more employees working during lunch time to speed the serving time of your food.

It's hard to rate this restaurant. One of the older sushi bars in Gainesville, the interior shows its age looking a bit worn and dated and the staff, while friendly and helpful, can seem overwhelmed when it's busy. The food is however pretty good, especially--perhaps surprisingly--the non-sushi dishes like the beef teriyaki and the spring rolls and gyoza that come with lunch bento boxes are very, very, good. The salad--a typical lettuce salad with ginger dressing--with my bento box even was very fresh and good. It's impressive to see quality and attention-to-detail on small touches like these that often get overlooked, especially on lunch specials. The sushi is ok, but not exceptional nor innovative. Mahzu does the best sushi in town I feel overall and Fuji out at Jonesville the very freshest sushi. I would have to strongly recommend the kitchen lunch bento boxes from Miya, however, and people rave about their Korean dishes, also, but I've not tried these.

  • Amanda H.

Miya has the best sushi in town. There's an excellent selection/variety of rolls, they're all well made and use quality ingredients. Best ginger salad dressing, too! It's citrus-y and fresh. I don't really get anything apart from sushi and bulgolgi when I'm there but my friends say the other food is great too. Very chill atmosphere and the woodwork in the restaurant is really pretty. Every time I go, I'm so happy I did.

Very authentic Korean and Japanese food. A lot of the food is simple and traditional. If you're looking for a classic Korean dinner for two, I would recommend their bulgogi donburi bowl and silky tofu soup for a great combination. The food isn't outstanding, but it's exactly what you would expect from a solid Korean/Japanese restaurant back in Korea or Japan. I definitely recommend the option to deep fry a roll. Absolutely delicious. Make sure you check in on Yelp when you get there to get a free bowl of edamame!

I have been here a few times and typically have the Korean rib bento box. The seasoning and temperature is always perfect. I sometimes share a roll with a friend and the sushi is pretty good too. The staff is friendly and the service is good as well. I also particularly like their miso soup.

The place is okay. I like it more with a restaurant.com coupon. The sushi is nice but a bit on the pricey side. Overall, the place is ok - I have been there 3 times and not received POOR service - and the food is nicely presented.

It was not good for its price. But I did not like some of its rolls at all.

    (2)
  • Alexander D.

Strip mall asian at its most mediocre. The small portions and lackluster quality did not justify the prices. The Beef bulgogi was bland, watery mush. The sushi was uneventful. Definitely pass on this.

  • Kim L.

If I gave one tip, I would say don't go between 2 and 5 or the service is really slow. It took a really long time to get our food. The sushi was ok but I have definitely had better in this town. The teriyaki chicken wasn't the best either. Miso soup was really good, and so were the gyoza and spring roll. The one really good thing is you can get a decent amount of sushi for a cheaper price than lots of other places.

  • Lisa Y.

Food is good.. price is too high. The bibimbap is good and so is the spicy beef soup if you're accustomed to yukgaejiang. However, for the price.. I don't think so. Bibimbap, spicy beef soup, seaweed salad, and a drink for over $30? I don't think so. Again, give the fact that I'm from Atlanta, I'm cheap when it comes to good Korean food, and paying that much knowing I could get the same for less back in the A was a painful realization. Service seemed to get slower and slower at the end though. Had to ask multiple times for a box and getting our check was a long process too.

This place is amazing and worth every star..... The service was superb, and the chef was a master. The presentation was amazing. The flaming rolls are a sight to see!! But I am a stickler for fresh ingredients and good flavor and this place blew my mind. I have had sushi all over the world- NYC, San Fran, LA, London, Paris... and this place honestly is in the top 5, if not a tie for #1. I have read reviews on the service being slow. Who cares.. You can't rush perfection...And I didn't think it was slow at all for the detail of presentation we enjoyed. And small portions like some say?? Not at all. These were some of the largest roles I have gotten. Overall, this place was astounding. I have also seen reviews that this place is pricy?? Not at all!!! Rolls starting at $5, and the exquisite specialty rolls which must weigh in at over a pound of food for $12-15. 2 of us shared 3 speciality rolls, 2 regular roles and a complimentary appetizer and ate until we were about to burst! I felt bad leaving a few pieces left on the table. A MUST GO Treat. I am in Florida a few times a year and this place just earned a regular customer every time I am in town. BRAVO...

Miya Sushi has always been a bit slow on service but I've tolerated it because the food was always great. The past few times, not so much. I just ate there and my party ordered two sushi rolls and two bento boxes. It took 10 mins to make drink orders and 10 more mins to get the drinks. 30 mins in, we finally got our super salty Miso soup and witnessed people having to pick up their own sushi rolls from the bar because the sushi chef was having a grand conversation with a couple at the sushi bar. 45 minutes in, we got our room temp chicken teriyaki, my friend's chicken was gristly and we hadn't got our sushi rolls yet. We also heard others complain but we were so hungry we finished our bento boxes and when the waitress came to bus the table, she said he was just getting to our rolls. Meanwhile we watched the sushi guy tell his whole college history. We cancelled the rolls and she wanted us to pay half of the entire bill. We paid for drinks and one bento box and left. Needless to say I will never go back or suggest Miya Sushi unless it's to an enemy or someone with lots of time to burn for average food.

Food was ok for the most part, service was not the best they didn't provide any silverware, napkins,or chopsticks when my food was served so I had to wait for them to come back before I could eat. I can give a lot of slack with service but the food wasnt good enough for me to go back.

First of all this place is not a real complete Korean BBQ- I expected more variety of Food from their menu . They are known for their sushi, but their sushi service is slow. Anyhow, the setting of the place is definitely focused on the Japanese place. THey got total of 10 Korean dishes if even.. Anyhow, since I ordered Korean food, the food service was fast. Unlike the sushi, i overheard several tables complained about it. And it was not even busy. Anyways, our waitress was a good servant. She did her job very well and served adequately. I end up getting the Ga Bi - Prime short ribs. We ordered the Stuff Mushroom and dumplings for appetizers. My friend ended up ordering the Spicy Pork. The main entrees came with Miso soup and rice. Prime Short Ribs - the presentation was very neat. Looked very yummy and appetizing! on a sizzling hot plate. It was well marinated, I just didn't like that that It was very greasy. I was able to taste the butter taste. Dumpling and Stuffed Mushroom- I was really disappointed with the dumplings. They gave us 4 dumplings for 4 dollars.. and it was NOT EVEN ANY SPECIAL DUMPLINGS! what a rip off.. and Stuffed mushroom was ehhhhh... bland taste.... and it is deep fried.. so bad for you.. unhealthy! lol Although both of them had pretty adequate presentation. Spicy Pork - it looked good, well presented in a sizzling plate. Bit was not well stirred thoroughly. Some part was really dry with no taste aside from the Spicy pepper. And otherwise the sauce was decent.... Anyhow, the entire meal took us only 45 minutes. One of the fastest sit down meal we have had. In conclusion, overall this place is alright. Mediocre because there are no other korean BBQ i know in town. Nothing really special stands out for this place.

This was one of those places where I had driven by it dozens of times in the past five years and never thought to go in. Since it has become a recent quest of mine to find awesome sushi in Gainesville that's not dragonfly, I made a note to try this place. I was not disappointed! We got an appetizer of steamed dumplings; very good but a little overpriced. I ordered a California roll and the "Rose" roll (a roll with tuna on top) and both were VERY good. Large rolls with fresh ingredients. Probably the best I've had in Gainesville. Their menu was quite extensive and the non-sushi items sounded delicious too. It wasn't cheap but it wasn't too expensive either. My only real complaint was it took too long to get our sushi and the check. Not long enough to keep me from returning however. 4 stars for being some of the best sushi in Gainesville. Here's hoping you're consistent!

I'm in from out of town and ordered delivery through 2dollardelivery.com . The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time given the distance and time of day. The sushi roll was good...quality was good, combination of ingredients was good, etc. I've had some amazing rolls other places...can't really say my choice here was in the amazing category. Maybe eating it in-house would have helped retained the crispiness of the shrimp in the roll. Delivery driver was super nice...overall decent experience.

We're very lucky to have such an excellent and authentic Korean restaurant in Gainesville. I haven't tried the sushi, but am always pleased with the Bulgogi and, in particular, the Bi Bim Bop.

sushi is really weird in gainesville. i remember the good days when dragonfly was delicious, didn't take over half of the city, and wasn't a clubbing pre-game destination. that was the place to go for sushi. now it's really confusing and mediocre. ordering sushi in gainesville is kind of like ordering sushi in the midwest -- which is strange since this is florida. i went to miya sushi a couple of weeks ago for the first time in years. my biggest turn-off was that they didn't have salmon belly (an off-of-the-menu order that is usually met), so i have been skeptical of the fish since that time. not only did they not have it, but they looked sincerely confused. they also scatter shiso leaves around like they are going out of style. shiso tastes a lot like i imagine tree stars from the land before time would taste like. it's like the smell of fresh-cut grass mixed with mint and basil mixed with shitty tea and some sticks. i feel bad about it -- i don't want all of these shiso plants to die for me. they have some good specials. the last time i went, i had a tempura bento box. everything in it was so random. there were a few pan-seared dumplings and a spring roll with sweet chili sauce and some vegetable medley with jalapeno. the tempura was meh. the veggies were frozen and the batter was quite thick. i've had some decent sushi there. they have a salmon or tuna box with various preparations of it, such as a spicy salad and nigiri. it was very good for the first time, but it wasn't so good the second time. their udon soup is nice and simple. it hits the spot and has kamaboko floating in it. apparently they have good korean, but i go to garlic and ginger for that. sorry, miya sushi. the service has been good, and it's nothing out of the ordinary for the area.

I am a loyal fan. Sushi is good, Korean leaves something to be desired, and service is quick. But I do like the sushi. It's your typical Americanized sushi with many rolls incorporating cream cheese (cringe) but for the ones that don't, I do enjoy.

Moved to gainseville a few months ago from boston. I love sushi and korean food so of course I was looking for a replacement sushi/korean spot out here and one day I came across this place and BAM! I got more than I asked for because this place is better than any place I've had in Boston! My fiancée and I are there every sunday! Love it!

When you are really craving some Korean BBQ, there is really nowhere else to go in Gainesville. So, we stopped by Miya Sushi (aka Joa BBQ) this past Saturday. I was craving some Spicy BBQ Pork lettuce wraps in a bad way. After leaving here with a full tummy, I was truly satisfied. These are not your Chili's or Cheesecake Factory style lettuce wraps. You have the choice to grill your own meat, or they bring it out grilled for you. You take a piece of lettuce, put on top a small piece of grilled meat, some rice, and then some spicy bean paste (ssamjang) and shove the whole thing in your mouth. It is so good! They only give you 4 banchan, but at least they give you fish cakes as one of them, and there are free refills on the side dishes. I'm not saying this place is fabulous, but it will do in a pinch. I feel that I need to clarify again: do not eat the sushi here, it tastes bad and is often spoiled. Just eat the Korean food here.

I like this place a lot. Waiter was very very attentive, popping in at all the right times, very professional. The food is pretty spot on. I had the Furious Viper roll, which did indeed live up to its name. They have some flaming rolls which I have to try some time. The place seems packed with asians, which is always a plus for me. Their fried ice cream was pretty yummy! I've never had any better :-) Also, the decor is perfect, not overdone, just perfect. Love what they've done to the ceiling too. There seems to a private dining area in the back? Not sure what the deal is on that, will have to check it out next. Food compares to Bentos in terms of quality. They are priced a little lower than Bento, however. Can't wait to go back here!

  • Chris T.

Your typical run of the mill rolls here, but still enjoyable. If you like spicy, try the "spiciest roll in gainesville". It's just a jalepeno and some spicy sauce, but it still hits the spot.. They also serve some Korean food here - which they've been trying to slowly incorporate more (usually through weekly specials); although it's not so good that you will have to write home, it will at least assuage a Korean craving for a little while. Overall, worth going to and supporting.

Awesome Korean food! Like some of the reviews say, the sushi is a bit pricy, but that's anywhere. To make up for it, they had a list of specials for it. For example, you can get 3 house sushi rolls for $12 or buy 2 or 3 special rolls (I don't remember) and get one free. Oh, and they also had buy two entrees and get a free appetizer listed, as well as buy two beers and get one free. For the six of us, it only came up to $127.00. That was for five adult meals ranging from $9 to $15, a kid's meal, 3 rolls of sushi for $12, the buy 2 or 3 get one free rolls, 2 appetizers (the appetizers were free), a tuna carapacio appetizer and the beer special. Not to mention, the server we had was very nice! This place is definitely a must try if you've never been there and we'll most definitely be back.

I never know when this place is open! They seem to have the strangest schedule of any restaurant! Anyway, when we do catch them on an *open day, the sushi is above average. However, the place itself has a weird smell to it, but it's nothing that would prevent me from eating there. The prices are very reasonable for sushi and the service is usually pretty quick. One of our favorite rolls is the simple yet tasty mushroom roll.

Miya Sushi is not the first place in town that I'd eat sushi at, but their sushi and the rest of their food is pretty good. It's located off Archer Road. Their food is reasonably priced. I've had excellent grilled teriyaki salmon here. Not a bad little place, really.

Miya Sushi is my regular sushi stop. The sushi is always of a good quality, and the service is always friendly and quick. The prices are very reasonable. If you and some friends are feeling like ballers, get the sushi boat. Pure bliss. The regular entrees are pretty good, though nothing to write home about.

My husband and I visited Miya Sushi today at 4pm to try something different in Gainesville. We've been getting tired of going out to Chop Stixs Cafe on 13th Street and wanted something else. The restaurant is pretty small but clean and nicely decorated. Its not one of those hipster places like The Top or Dragonfly. We wanted a place where we could enjoy the food without paying exorbitant prices for the "scene." There was no one else in the restaurant at 4pm and we were served very quickly. We ordered the lion king roll, a crispy roll, and 2 bento boxes. All of the food was delicious and presented amazingly. The Lion king roll was enormous and the crispy roll was hot! (all made to order). The miso soup was nice and hot too (I hate when its luke warm) and the bento boxes were HUGE! Rice, meat, tempura veggie, gyoza, salad, 2 sushi rolls and an orange slice and what looked like sweet egg. I will definitely be going here again!!

This is a good place to go for 3 reasons: when you're not quite sure if you want Korean or Japanese, when you're just looking for the basics of both cuisines, and when you're taking a newbie of either cuisine to their first experience. The menu can sort of be thought of as 3 parts - sushi, Japanese and Korean. They have the standard offerings you'd expect at a restaurant for each one, with a few little extras beyond basics. I ordered a bowl of their hot and spicy beef soup, which was definitely hot temperature-wise but not spicy. Maybe they didn't think a white girl could handle the heat, but I grew up on habaneros and worse - should ask for more heat next time I guess. That aside, it was very flavorful and loaded with nice shreds of beef which were chewy but not overcooked, green onions and chives, and just a few clear noodles. The lunch bento boxes are not only a great value but a great selection. I got a galbi box and asked for no rice, so they gave me an extra spring roll (very tasty, crisp and flavorful). The dumplings were fried nice and fresh, not much flavor, but decent. Ginger dressing on the salad was tasty, nothing special on the 2 pieces of California roll. The galbi was nice and tender, not too much flavor, but good enough. They also offered a few of the typical Korean side dishes with my box - kimchi, spicy pickled radish, and sweet pickled radish. The kimchi had a slightly spicy kick, but definitely not anything to really perk up my tongue. The spicy pickled radish was done with jalapeno and soy so it was a bit vinegary-salty and pretty mild but flavorful. The sweet pickle was my favorite, made a great last bite to end my meal. Service was very friendly, place was clean and nice atmosphere. If you've got someone in your group that is iffy on trying a new cuisine, Miya is a good place to introduce them to the basics.
