I missed the Cuban sandwiches of Tampa Bay so I'm glad I found this place. It is cash only though so make sure you bring cash.

La Familia: Pros: The best damn Cuban in Gainesville Cons: Only open from 10am-4pm on weekdays and cash only Bottom Line; IF you are in the mood for a meaty experience sandwiched between two glorious pieces of fine crusted bread than look no further than this family hole-in-the-wall. If appearances sold sandwiches then La Familia would be at the bottom. With a dilapidated¬¬ sign located off the corner of a rundown plaza; you may think that this place had been abandoned long ago if you come during its off-hours. Yet I have never had a finer Cuban sandwich touch my lips in all of Gainesville; there is history, pride, and meat, LOTS OF MEAT in this sandwich. Owned by a trusty father and son duo, they always do their best to serve whoever walks through their doorstep. Often the pair have sandwiches ready for people before they even order; you can be sure that there are tons of regulars that have been here for years. While the contents of the sandwich is nothing to scoff at, the bread is the true gem of their sandwich. Bread is freshly delivered from Tampa daily and it makes such a difference. Cash only so be sure you check your wallet before you try the best damn Cuban in Gainesville.

The absolute best place in town for a cuban sandwich the bread is the key and it comes up daily from Ybor city. The Beef stuffed potato is pretty amazing too.

Easily the best Cuban sandwich in town. The place is exactly what you would want it to be. Off the beaten path, and tucked in the corner of an old shopping plaza. They are only open M-F and I believe until around 4pm but the cuban bread may be gone before that so don't delay. They drive daily from Tampa with fresh bread and it pays off. Don't look for a fancy website or online ordering, this is not that. These guys are making traditional Tampa style cuban sandwiches (and a few other things), and making it the right way, with roasted pork loin, ham, and salami. The sandwiches are always consistent and the service is friendly. This place does have a lot of regulars but they make you feel at home. If you're looking for the best Cuban Sandwich around Gainesville, look no further. CASH ONLY

Best Cuban sandwich I have ever eaten. Just a hole in the wall type of eatery, that specializes in what they do best (THE CUBAN). I would recommend this over Mi Apa anytime.. (Cash Only, ATM next door at CVS)

I went here cause I was craving a sandwich and my friend lives nearby so we walked and it is so good. So glad I went over. I had the Cuban and the owner was talking to me the whole time making it. They get bread fresh daily and use all fresh ingredients. I won't hesitate to walk over again. Overall, great service and amazing food.

STILL AWESOME. I am just not sure why I don't eat here every freaking day. The Cuban sammich (extra pickle, extra pressed) is the best in town, and the ONLY Tampa style Cuban you can find. The perfect balance of ham, thick cut salami and perfectly roasted pork . Their hours are limited (they close usually at 4, sometimes a wee bit earlier....- oh yeah, thats why - I never seem to think about them until about 5 - duh me) The bread comes from Mauricio's in Tampa. Mmm. Awesome hand made crusty Cuban loaves, split with palmetto like it should be. And those wonderful Cuban sugar cookies... and guava turnovers... Heaven. The staff is a father /son team. The father was born and raised in Ybor City and is a great guy to talk to. The son is very reserved, you might think brusque - just not a talker at all. he moves fast, has little to say. The decor is a mix of Ybor and Gainesville history. Ask the dad about the police photos that cover the walls. He rescued the negatives from the dumpster years ago and will chew your ear off with the tale. Go when he is there and get ready for a great conversation if he is. Keep in mind that if you are used to Miami cuban food, you want Flaco's downtown - those sandwiches are wider and wetter like you find in Miami. Of course, the Cuban sandwich was invented in Tampa, so the Miami stuff is really a later version. Tampa Cuban food is really a pastiche of Cuban, Spanish & Italian going back to the early 1800s.

probably the worst Cuban place in g-ville I swear this is a money laundering joint I work just around the corner, no one ever goes there, how they stay in business you got me. Food is average at best other better places to choose from - Mi Apa or Virtually Cuban just down the street

A Great Sandwich. I'm from Miami, so I'm not stranger to a Cuban sandwich. This place makes them pretty well. The guy working there always seemed to be rushing despite there not being anything to do really, and didnt seem too happy. But they sure do know how to make their sandwich. I got the Cuban Sandwich pressed (pressed is the only way to go). It was great. It was loaded with ham, salami, and pork. The bread was good and it was buttered up and had a generous helping of mustard (which can be good or bad for some people). Then its topped with cheese and pickles. They also have guava and cheese pastelitos for those of you in Gainesville from Miami. The sandwich was great and the price ($5.99) was good. The service was kind of rushed, but it doesnt matter to me (I had takeout). The place is pretty small and they've got photos of celebrities on the wall. Not sure if they are open at night so your best bet is to go for lunch. P.S. They only take cash!

This is the one place in Gville that's first on the list as a favorite for lunch every time we come to town. Accidentally discovered almost 15 years, it has consistently been making the best Cuban sandwiches this side of old town Tampa and one of the last truly local shops...Good people, great sandwiches (etc), and well worth venturing off the beaten path...

They only take CASH, so beware. Try the cuban sandwich ($5.95), cold or pressed, it is gosh darn good. Inside, they have many caricatures and a wall painting. Lots of locals and police, fire station officers are frequently seen at this place. It's right next to the Indian store on 16th Ave.

Wow, this plaza is a sight to behold. It absolutely obliterates the fine line between "old" and "charm". In any case, good stop if you want a Cuban AND you're in the area. Otherwise it's just decent. Okay, maybe it's better than decent, but it was more memorable in the abrasive way than it was the endearing way. There was some entertainment from the guy at the counter, and not the good kind. I started to write the whole scene out in narrative form, but it got a little ridiculous so I'll summarize. Basically, a customer didn't hear the counter guy when he asked to take his order. Apparently trying to make an example out of the guy, he avoided any further eye contact or conversation until the customer made a gesture and spoke up that he wanted to order. The guy at the counter proceeded to belittle him about how he initially tried to take his order but he wasn't paying attention. It went on for an awkardly long time like he was teaching a kid a lesson. On the upside, it gave me a chance to turn around out of discomfort and check out the interesting pictures on the wall, particularly old pictures of Gainesville. With all that said, the Cuban was huge and tasty, definitely a good value. But between their short hours and their distance from everything I consider convenient, I probably won't return until their 100 year anniversary, which should be coming up soon.

I went here in 1998 with an order of 12 Cuban Sandwiches for all of the guys for our construction company. We phoned the order in. Now the ONLY reason that we even wanted their food was a few days earlier I read an article in the Gainesville Sun newspaper about this place. The writer of the review wrote " don't ask the guy who owns the place to make changes to a Cuban sandwich; this isn't Burger King; you get it my way or not at all." Now this is in '98. I go there to pick up the order. My brother and me walk in. My brother had a Dr. Pepper soda in a can in his hand, the owner says you can't come in here with that drink in your hand; five cops sitting at the back look up, grinning and laughing. I say we are here to pick up an order. Owner says he's not serving us until that soda can leaves his restaurant. The Cuban sandwiches were fantastic. They were expensive; even then. I have gone out of my way to tell people what an attitude that guy had; apparently, he drives all the way to Tampa to get the Bread for the sandwiches he makes. That's none of my business, yet it is his. Police are in there, and the apartments behind the place aren't all college students. If you like bad attitude with your meal, go to this place. If your timid and afraid, keep walking. This is definitely a "No soup for you" restaurant.

I don't like salami in my cuban mix and the rather grouchy guy was very defensive about that and when I asked for please more pork no salami I just got no salami.

Lunch here is a back-to-school ritual among my collegues since we work so close. La Familia serves perfectly pressed Cubans and mounds of tasty black beans and rice. Their bread is delivered fresh from Ybor City in Tampa every day. There are other items on the menu, but I've never desired to waver from my Cuban sandwich ritual. The guava and cream cheese pastries, which were next to impossible to find in Gainesville for many, many years, are also delicious. The place is filled with regulars, and I've yet to visit without sharing dining space with at least one group of GPD officers. La Familia also has surprisingly good sweet tea. They are only open during lunch Monday through Friday.
