I have to question the previous reviewer's high consistency rating. The last several times I have come here I was served hard tacos where were completely soggy, the tortilla falling apart and cold like it had been sitting there an hour. of course I went drive thru so I found out too late. I did go around 8 or 9, near to closing each time, but still, pretty bad. In it's good times this is decent food and one of the few options in the area so I have to thank them for that. Next time better test before i drive away though. Pretty slow too for serving cold food.

Top notch Mexican fast food. Very fresh ingredient, prepared daily. Try the Horchata! So refreshing! Mexican sodas... Slushies... soft serve ice cream... OH MY!!!! They redecorated and changed the patio seating. Much more pleasant & clean looking. There's even an A/C outside.

Only place in town to get a drive through tempeh burger and fries! For what it is, their food is great mexican fast food. Perfect for when you need a quick bite and want to take something back to the house for consuming in front of a movie or episode of Game of Thrones. Their veggie burritos are insanely cheap, if only a little small, yet I always find myself ordering more than I can eat. Their tempeh burrito is nothing special, but I am glad to see it on the menu as a solid option for vegetarians and vegans. Consistency is something I've never had an issue with here, seems to always be the same dependable stuff. The beans are tasty, the fries are hot, food comes out fast. Overall I have never been disappointed eating here, but I don't expect to be blown away either. With that, El Indio fills an important niche in the fast food scene in Gainesville. With El Indio around, I would never consider going to Taco Bell.

I've been curious about this place for years, heard a lot of mixed reviews from friends but then decided to give it a go and have my own review...... I read over the reviews that carne asada was the most popular, so low and behold i had a carne asada burrito and horchata, and I really enjoyed it! the burrito was very flavorful and horchata was not too sweet and refreshing. it was a bit smaller from the burritos of traditional Mexican fast food places (no! I'm not taking about Taco Bell!) however for the price and flavor, I'd go again!

quick serve mexican food, complete with a drive thru window and super friendly staff. So far I've tried the taquitos (super yummy), the chips and queso (delightfully spicy) and the soft serve ice cream (my kid's favorite!) I would definitely reccommend giving this place a try. It's nothing fancy but it fills the need for a quick, cheap bite that makes you feel good because you're supporting a local restaurant.

OK. It's in our neighborhood. It's open Sunday. The hot sauce is great. From there, not so much. Spouse had the enchilada combo - chicken was okay, but the beef and bean ones were not particularly tasty. An enchilada needs more than plain hamburger to call it Mexican. I tried the tempeh burrito - interesting and had it been heated through it might have been good. Overall I think we'll skip El Indio in future.

It's just ok....burrito bros beats the pants off this place. I ordered the chicken burrito; pretty decent although lacking in flavor. If I were craving a cheap burrito NOT from taco bell I would go here. Service was friendly and quick! The drive thru is also a plus. I have to say that Burrito Bros wins this contest hands down. The flavor is just so much better. It might be more expensive but they do make a bigger burrito. I would eat here again but burrito bros continues to be my favorite.

Think of El Indio as Mexican fast food. Its quick soul food to fill your belly and please your palate so you can get through the rest of your day. It's surely not fancy but very wholesome. There are a few tables both indoor and outdoor but seating is spartan at best. The drive through never stops at lunchtime. I've been dropping in here for years. The food is always good and there are never any crazy changes to the menu. I can also order anything I want and customize it anyway I want to. No complaints or BS - just done the way I ask for. Their salsa is the best in North Florida. No BS, it really is. I could sit here and bore you with how the salt/tomatillo/cilantro blend in a perfect mix of harmony but you really need to try it yourself. I could inject it by IV its so good. They also have ice cream. Not important for me but might be for you. Its simple Mexican food made with some heart. Stop in and give it a chance. Make sure you grad a few salsa cups from the end of the counter to accompany your dish.

El Indio has been one of my staples since I was a kid , I love this place. Best things are taco salads, tempeh burritos and carnitas soft tacos . They also have the best soft serve ice cream in town and make the best blizzards (which they call hurricanes)

Popular spot for quick tex-mex in Gainesville. Pretty convenient and fast since it has a drive-thruI like the chicken enchiladas with beans and rice. For the price its large and filling. It is A-OK. They also have a taquitos meal which is 4 beef taquitos- fried, crispy and filling.

I've been getting ice-cream at this building ever since taking swimming lessons at the Y as a kid. I appreciate that El Indio has kept up the tradition of serving ice cream, although it's regular old soft serve without many defining characteristics. They recently did a face-lift inside. Brighter colors and a redesigned menu make it feel more lively here. They could really make the depressing outside porch into something if they threw some money at it. A lot of the food they serve here is on the mediocre side, but there are a few standouts. Any of their carne asada dishes are usually a good bet. I typically get the carne asada quesadilla with a side of fries or chips. I'm not a big fan of their ground beef, so I tend to avoid any of their dishes that have it. It tastes a bit off and is generally a little too greasy. The chicken dishes are fine, but nothing special. I like the way this location prepares their beans, and I'll sometimes just get chips and beans for a quick dinner. The staff is always pleasant and provides fast service, and the food is consistent. If you find something you like, stick with it. This isn't a place where being adventurous is advantageous.

Reasonably priced & very authentic. My almost two-year-old son will eat anything here, which is always a good sign. They did a little face-lift inside which looks nice, & really improved the atmosphere. As far as the food goes, it's obviously good if I'm giving it 4 stars, however the carnitas, I don't think, are worth the extra charge for the "upgrade." You're better off getting shredded beef for a cheaper price, similar texture, & still a great flavor. The only criticism I would offer, is that the woman who runs the register & drive-thru is rather non-personable. Every time I go she's just playing on her phone unless she's taking your order, & always seems like she's annoyed that you've interrupted her phone-session. That's probably the only reason I have it 4 stars instead of 5 stars.

Consistently good, been here a few times and I usually get a simple beef taco or the shredded beef or ground beef burrito. The beef has a great flavor. A great spot to stop and get a quick lunch. They have indoor seating and a drive thru at this location.

I ate here a while ago with my cousin he kept telling me how good it was. Being from California I was quite worried about this place especially since it was called El Indio. I ordered a chicken burrito that was dry tasteless and disgusting. No where did it mentioned to me that the beans were black beans I find truly disgusting to me they resemble piles of deer s*** . So I was very disappointed to find that they had quite cleverly hidden some inside of my burrito. YUCK.

Pretty good Mexican food at a reasonable price. They tend to get backed up at busy times due to a small Staff and you have to ask for salsa but it's the only place in town for a fish taco.

Went for late lunch - good salsa (green) but lack any decor - the name on the front door is from so old Chinese place that has never been changed! I am had pressed to give it a 3 star ... I would say STAY AWAY!

The food is good and I love their selection. Mexican food, American food, and desserts all in one place, but I'll be honest, I come here for the dessert! How I love to stop here after working in the hot sun for a Slush Puppy!! It's the perfect way to cool down. I've also completed my quest for a classic chocolate and vanilla swirl because it ends here. There is NO frozen yogurt place in town that serves these flavors. I don't care about those nasty, exotic favors and not to mention how expensive it is. You can get 44OZ of this deliciousness. So in summary, awesome dessert selection. The food is good, fresh, and filling. However, I eat their food so I don't turn my entire lunch into just ice cream. Side note: Yes, all their food drips, maybe they need a salad spinner. 8/12/2013 I dropped my ratings after being treated like crap. I'll admit service is slow, unorganized, and if you don't keep it simple they won't understand you.. I was overcharged for an order they did incorrectly.

Somehow, this El Indio nevers seems to taste as good as the 13th Street location. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the food doesn't seem as fresh somehow. However, this may be mainly preception: I don't like this part of 34th Street and this El Indio is in the parking lot of a rather pitiful-looking small strip mall, next to a veterinary practice which went into a converted bank, of all things. While the 13th Street location has ample outdoor seating but none indoors, this El Indio has indoor seating and is overall larger. They also offer ice cream and milkshake treats here, which I've not yet tried but is a nice touch. I think it's fair to try this location, especially if you like the 13th Street one: I personally like to sit outside the 13th Street one in the afternoon sun and eat my tacos as it reminds me of taco stands in places like Newport Beach and Encinitas, California. Nostalgia aside though, the place should be judged on their food and I do think it's not quite as good as the 13th Street one, but they mainly carry the same offerings and all the tacos are great as are the chicken enchiladas. If the freshness seems a tad off, could also be that they don't sell as much volume here as the one closer to campus?

This is a great little place! It's not trying to be more thAn it is! Food is always good and very reasonable in price. I like that it recently got an updated look w/ a new menu. love that it has vegetarian options, the veggie Quesadilla I got on 8/20/13 was chalk full of veggies including black beans and avocados cheese was a little runny but it's Mexican food which I love so it didn't bother me.my boyfriend got black bean taco salad it was excellent the dressing that came on the side was something else tasted like a big Mac dressing sauce but otherwise everything else was a hit ! The wait staff were kind and service was quick even with 4 other couples ahead of us we didn't have to wait long before our food was ready. Someone had mentioned the front porch could use an update I second this opinion .

Pretty decent Mexican food...definitely better than most tex mex places in town though it'd be a stretch to call this authentic considering that they use cheap pre-made corn and flour tortillas (although the corn ones do taste like they fry them fresh). Anyone that's had fresh homemade tortillas knows the difference. Still most food is freshly prepared. The quac is better than most places. The salsa is homemade and unique. And the refried black beans are homemade (although I avoid it bc it gives me awful gas). They also have a cheap tempeh burger, which somehow despite being minimally prepared, tastes better than most places in town that don't marinate their tempeh and are twice as much. They have unique items like vegan horchata which is overly sweet but refreshing. Tortilla chips are fresh too but I avoid them bc they are probably GMO. Everything is cheap and quick. Worthy of 3.5 but since we don't have that option on Yelp I give em a solid 3 stars.

Poor customer service. Good food. We were really looking forward to eating here and pulled up at the drive thru because we had a dog with us and it's Gainesville in August ( = miserable). There was no sign indicating the drive thru wasn't in service not did any of the three people working including the two standing right next to our drive thru window indicate it wasn't open. Of course they didn't ever open the window to tell us they'd be right with us or to take our order. Even if you are a small business you need customer service. We left after waiting an inordinate amount of time for no service whatsoever. It was too bad because we were really looking forward to their food. Headed to Taco Bell where the food is subpar but at least someone will take your order.

The tacos are so authentic, and they are delicious ! I always drive through and we order slushies too. The only down side is that they are greasy and oftentimes we get that oil on our hands and clothes and it stains but the taste is worth it ! The cheese n chips is awesome too. The price is a little high its not taco bell !

This location is preferable to 13th street and the food is identical; high marks for consistency. Their drive-thru is blissful convenience and the food, though not stellar, is not bad. Best drive-thru Mexican option in town! P.S. The queso dip is 5 star worthy!

Eh. My friend had been raving about this place, but I really wasn't impressed. They messed up my order and didn't seem to care too much about it. All the food just looks... bland, and the taste didn't make up for it. I'd honestly say that I'd rather go to Taco Bell for the price or just pay more and go to Burrito Bros or La Tienda.

I find the food here to be pretty darn good. It is served fast and hot and is the closest I have found to real mexican food around Gainesville. The hot sauce was very good too, I just wish the offered more choices. I should take off .5 stars for charging you .32 cents to refill your soda.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
