Could not say enough about how pleased I was with my lunch today. Civilization has changed their menu slightly. Took away some of the duds and added some new ideas. I was immediately impressed by that fact that as a vegan, I had MANY different options. This is a big deal to me, because normally I just search for the one item on a menu that is vegan and have to order this. There were two different soups to select from (Gaspacho and a Sweet Potato Ginger Soup). I has both and they were amazing! Just enough spice in both. I also noticed that there was tons of homemade dressings on the menu and they were quite a few that were vegan. 4 different salads were vegan as well. I got an entre that was Avocado Toast that came with a salad or soup. Sounded simple....but then it came out. I swear there must have been about 4 avocados mixed into this unbelievable good topping for this perfectly toast thick slice of wheat nutty bread. I was in heaven!! They spiced it with my favorite spice, red pepper flake. I told the waiter that this item was the best thing I have ever had there and it should have been on the menu the whole time. He let me know that this was an item on their brunch menu.....BRUNCH?!?! I didn't even know they had one! I'll definitely attend! Service was very good. A waitress brought me out my soup that I ordered while walking through the door (ok I was a little excited about it) and I commented that I was so happy to see homemade vegan soups. She had me wait to eat it until she triple checked with the chef that it was vegan. WHAT??? a server that actually cares?!?! She actually made sure that what I was eating was on my diet. Love it!! All in all, Civilization might have to marry me because I'm going to be spending a lot of time there.

I had my first visit last week and I was really impressed. Great selection of vegetarian food, which was helpful because the friend I was dining with is vegetarian. We started with the Spread Sampler, which was yummy and more than enough for us to share. Then we ordered a Roasted Red Pepper and Avacado Melt and a Spinach and Sweet Potato Burrito and shared those dishes. I thought the burrito could have used a bit more seasoning or flavor, but it was still quite good. The melt was really terrific and the potato wedges were hot and crisp. I'll definitely come back....I'd love to give their dinners a try. It was busy but not crowded (on a Friday for lunch) and the service was attentive but not intrusive. Really great lunch experience!

Had lunch at this restaurant last week and am going back tomorrow because it was delicious, reasonable and the service was very good! I had a sandwich with fresh basil and tomatoes which was delicious and the ingredients were fresh enough to be just picked from your garden! we are going back for a dinner tomorrow. They do have a break between meal serving times if you look at their menu and schedule so are not open continuously all day which migh explain the mix up described in one review.

i'm torn between 2 and 3 stars. i went here for the first time last night. i heard a lot of great things about this place; it's one of the few locally-derived restaurants in the city. the location is beautiful and so is the building. there's a little black cat outside that loves to cuddle. the acoustics are a bit shitty in there, though. we were practically screaming by the end of it. HOWEVER. it was a thursday night and there weren't many people there. the table turnover was so, so, so slow. i have no idea how these people make it (brunch, i hear). it took a long time to get drinks. i took a long time to get silverware. it took a long time to order food and it took even longer to get the food. we got there at 6 p.m. and didn't get out until 8:30 -- and we left early. our party was still waiting for their check. we had places to go before december 12th rolled around, you know? we ordered a few appetizers: potato croquettes, guacamole dip, and the dip sampler. the dip sampler was strange. the olive tapenade was overwhelmingly sweet. the artichoke dip blew up my mouth with garlic. the guacamole was nice. a thousand years later, we received our meals. mine was surprisingly good -- shitake mushrooms over rice. my fiance ordered the flank steak with chimichurri. he ordered it medium rare but it came out looking practically blue. we ordered the rum and coconut tres leches cake for dessert. it was a nice cake base but had way too much alcohol. it was doused. i love supporting local businesses but i doubt i would go back. it was uncomfortable and not a place i would want to linger for a long period of time -- unless i was forced to because i had no silverware and was unable to eat my food. ... which happened.

I've waited a long time to review it because I have a hard time with commitment and wanted to be able to say it was my favorite. Now after about a solid year of going here several times a month I can say if confidence - This place is my favorite restaurant in town. Their food is so yummy! It is more than that it is filled with creativity! This is the only place in town I have to check online to see what new thing they've got on the menu. I could eat here almost every day and get something different. That is how ever evolving their offerings are. The most amazing part is even though their constantly churning out all these new varieties to the menu the food stays consistently flavorful, fresh and beautiful. I can't say that for any other place in Gainesville. In fact that is my #1 complaint about most local food places in town. But not here - they impress me time after time. The coffee is divine. Man I don't know what they do to it but it is just tops! Thick rich creamy foam over dark strong java bliss... sometimes they even make a little whipped topping flourish with the foam that just adds a little extra special something to the day. I love this place and can never say enough good things about the food. The wait staff are also very friendly - they seem to remember me now too... Oh you again their faces seem to say with a smile... "May I get your latte for you?" they ask as they seat me... I just nod happily! It is good to go where everybody knows my coffee preferences. :) The decor is simple and stunning. Every detail is so nice. Please give money to this place so it stays alive. We need this restaurant in our town.

Was told this place was not Applebees or Olive Garden when I asked for a candle for my friend's birthday. What a douche. Go to applebees or olive garden instead. The food might be more bland but at least they don't season with PRETENTIOUS JERK spice.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I bolded that because I know most people skim through these reviews and I wanted to be sure that they were not blind sided by the service like I was at civilization tonight. It's a shame too because the food is decent, and I probably would have returned. There are only two reasons to write online reviews 1. Because everything was amazing and you want everyone to know or 2. Because you had a bad experience and want everyone to know. Unfortunately this is a restaurant review that will not even mention the food. The food took entirely way too long to arrive at our table. Upon complaint we were told that this was not a "fast food " restaurant, and that we should leave if we were unhappy. We also got the famous, "with all do respect we are full", as if being ill prepared for an evening where you might have a full restaurant is one where the customer should be understanding. When you're in the service industry you always apologize even if there is nothing you can do about it. But here's the real kicker. As soon as the food was delivered the check was delivered as well. It was done intentionally by the tactless server, in order to anger us. Now, I've eaten at many bad restaurants, with bad service, but that takes the cake. I've never eaten in a restaurant that is as classless and tacky as civilization, and I will never return. As you look through other yelp comments it doesn't seem like I'm the only one that has had this same experience. Just know that it is a matter of time before it happens to you. To the employees of civilization, I know that you are all part owners of the restaurant, and you should know that Siavash has singled handedly ruined my dining experience and that of my family, and the thousands of dollars that we spend on going out to dinner each year will be spent at other Gainesville establishments.

How many times do you have to try a place before you give up on it? With Civilization, I've given it 4 shots. I've tried something very different each time, and am still wondering why it's supposed to be good. It is housed in the old Second Street Bakery building, which is a work of art in and of itself. I would want nothing more for this world than a wonderful restaurant to occupy this space. Their website boasts a team with over 50 years of combined restaurant experience. Well, think about it this way. BP has well over 50 years of oil industry experience. Now I'm not saying that Civilization is the greatest natural disaster this country has ever seen, I'm just saying that experience isn't a substitute for quality, skill, etc. I know this review is starting off a bit harsh, but let me try to ease up a bit. They have a great beer menu. In fact, I'd say it's one of my favorites. It's very small (less than 10), but it has some real gem's. I like this because it doesn't overload me with choices. Also, they have a delicious strawberry and spinach salad with poppy seed dressing. I've also heard that their lunches are great. Beyond that, I really haven't had anything worth noting. Here's what I have had: Pumpkin Lasagna: This was my introduction to Civilization. Sounds delicious, right? Wrong. It was literally flavorless. Since a good friend who already thinks I'm way too picky brought us here and recommended this particular dish, I was really on my best behavior and didn't complain at all. About half way through, he actually asked me if I thought it tasted like dirt. I was so happy! Sometimes I think I'm so critical that I might just be insane. When people vindicate my judgment, it makes me feel so much better. Portabello Stroganoff: OK, let's get one thing straight. Mushroom Stroganoff shouldn't be on a menu at a nice restaurant. It's something that your midwestern aunt makes for dinner and it is to have no seasoning besides salt. Furthermore, it's a heavy dish, and not one that should appear in the summer time (Civilization also touts a seasonal menu). It featured broad noodles and big pieces of mushrooms. Much like Aunt Flo from Michigan's recipe, it was rather bland, very heavy and hardly gourmet. Old Florida Sampler: Collard Greens, Black Eyed Peas and rice, a corn fritter, and sweet potato casserole come together on a plate to represent the sunshine state. I'm honestly not sure why these dishes are particularly Floridian (beyond being Southern), but it's just so so. The black eyed peas and rice and collard greens are pretty standard (not much you can do to them) and the corn fritter adds a nice little insult to your arteries. Now the real buzz kill for me was the sweet potato casserole. I don't know about you, but in my family, sweet potato casserole is basically a dessert. It's sweet. Civilization added sauteed onions and other stew-esque elements to this, rendering it inedible for me. (Imagine if someone gave you a slice of pumpkin pie with anchovies on it). Chicken Cacciatore: This was actually the only item I got here that was good. It still wasn't great, but it was pretty good. They get their chicken from a farm in Georgia that utilizes ethical practices and environmentally sustainable choices. I'm OK with eating chicken from a place like that, so I splurged. I often wonder if my negative reactions are based on my avoidance of meat dishes, so I figured I'd test it out. The chicken melted off the bone, as it should in a Cacciatore, and it came with a roasted zucchini that was mighty nice. Overall, it was a pretty decent meal, but nothing to write home about. I'd love to love this place, but alas, I don't. If they get it together, I'll be a big supporter, but for now, it's too mediocre and the service is actually quite slow. Most of the dishes seem to be based on a pre-made item (see all 4 above), yet it still takes quite some time to get your meal, even when they're not busy. Unfortunately, all civilizations must fall, and for our friends at Civilization, I think it's only a matter of time.

While starting a series in my blog on the quality/value of east Gainesville restaurants,we decided to start with one that I had not yet patronized. What a mistake! Our dining experience at Civilization was grueling, painful, and tasteless. The only redeeming points to the restaurant were the industrial chic design of the place and the well-intentioned staff. Oh....and the toasted bread was crisp. Basically, we spent an hour and half waiting for a table and waiting to be served. 90 minutes! When the meal finally arrived (Coq au Vin), it was pretty much tasteless without any depth of flavor. A dish often put in the category of comfort food, this version, coupled with the horrendously long wait, rendered our visit to this restaurant a total bomb. If I had cooked this dish at home I would have considered what I was served to be a complete failure. My wife's flank steak was just OK and the chimichurri sauce was barely apparent. Upon our arrival, the restaurant lot did not have many cars in the lot and we decided to give the restaurant a try. We went in and found two parties ahead of us. The hostess said we could be seated in about 15 minutes. With no place to sit, we stood at the door for about 20 minutes. We were finally offered some seats at a booth set up for waiting patrons, not diners. Many of Civilization's flaws begin with poor table management. The restaurant needs to add more two person tables. There were many four person tables seating two people. One six person table that had been configured by sliding together one or more tables had two people seated at it. While the restaurant is small, better tabling is needed to maximize the numbers of people that can be served and the number of settings per table per evening. They will surely fail if this problem is not solved. Several tables had customers with glassy eyed looks of having waited way too long for their food. One of the two parties ahead of us, upon being seated, were quick to tell the waitress they were very ready to order. They seemed exasperated at the long wait and had been forced to read and re-read the menu while waiting. At no point did anyone ask how our meal was etc. I had to flag down someone to request......a napkin. Finally, after we were able to pay our check, we left the restaurant passing the main counter and the hostess and manager/owner. There was not a word uttered. Nothing like "thanks" or "good night" or "We hope you enjoyed your meal." I will not return. Why would I want to go to a restaurant where the wait is long/painful and the final dish served is tasteless and unimaginative? Civilization needs to re-examine how to move people through their establishment comfortably and gracefully. Their food needs considerable improvement. If you are looking for good restaurants on the east side, there are many other excellent choices: Satchel's, Ruby's, East End Eatery, The Jones. If you go to Civilization, be forewarned. I hope they can turn their restaurant around, but for now I can not give them a passing grade.

A very RARE FIVE STAR rating! Yesterday's lunch was PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. I had a tasty cold melon soup with bits of coconut and ginger in it... tasted like dessert interspersed with my meal... LOVED IT. My salad, the "Utopia" really was a Utopia, with salty olives, rice, mixed greens, lime and mint, it couldn't have been any tastier. My friend had a buffalo burger ( i had two bites) and those large wedge cut fries that Civilization does so well. We ooooohhhed and ahhhhed all through lunch! Service is always a bit slow, but good for conversation time. I was extremely impressed with the flavor, and such a quaint place too, might be back again within the week!

i am very picky about how my food tastes. and about ambiance. and about service. i think my bar for service is set by danny meyer's restaurants- this was equally as good. our server was very helpful, congenial and knowledgeable. he let us taste a couple of different wines before we chose a bottle- even opening a few bottles for us to taste. he was cute and personable but not overbearing. he was there when we needed him and not there when we didn't. ambience is way better than most places in gainesville. great music choices (quiet but interesting), cool industrial chic architecture, and great lighting. not bright but not dark. the food was excellent. i travel and eat out all the time, and am based out of nyc. i was visiting my parents for the holidays when i came here. so- i would say i have tasted a wide variety of good as well as horrible food. to start, we ordered the onion rings (delicious, crispy and light (in tempura better i think?) with this cray-mazing buttermilk mustard (i think?) dipping sauce); the muhammara, and the special - thai corn fritters. the fried apps were incredibly light and not too filling. all were to die for- as was the bread that they served to us before the apps came. soft and delicious on the inside and crispy on the outside. we all had salads- i had the beet salad- they pickled the beets in house- they're amazing. some of the most delicious beets ever. vinegary and sweet and not too overbearing in the salad. and then we shared the sweet potato enchiladas, thalia plate and chicken piri piri. none of them were particularly eye opening or life changing, but all were cooked to perfection. it shocks me how infrequently this happens- and i am always pleasantly surprised when everything in a meal clicks. hence the 5 stars! in all gainesville has a new (i have no idea how new this place is...i get to gville every 8 months or so and live way on the other side of town...) gem. i couldnt resist anything that seemed faddish (locallly sourced food...co-op- everything williamsbirg...) AND showed up in gainesville. anyway. i am bitter and hate everything. and i loved this place. so you should go. you're probably not as bitchy as me and so will enjoy it even more cause you wont be fighting through a veil of jaded-ness. anyway. great meal on nye!!

Let's start with the terrible parking, now moving on to the 40 minute wait for a table. Next, trying to order from an absentee waiter, he finally shows up but because we are strict vegetarians, we need to ask a few questions regarding cross contamination in the kitchen, he leaves to supposedly ask, doesn't show up again, fifteen minutes later we have to track him down, we order appetizers and entrees, my daughters appetizer comes. Mine doesn't, at this point I'm ready to eat cardboard! Mine finally comes at least fifteen minutes later but is so spicy it's not even edible! The mandarin soda was awful too by the way. Moving on to entrees, (there's four of us). The entrees never came! We hunt down the waiter again, he says it shouldn't be much longer, another half hour passes, I'm not kidding! we ask two more times where our food is, they say it's coming soon, really!??!! Another half hour passes, I was so furious I wanted to leave, but at that point two out of four entrees finally come and they inform us they're closing in ten minutes!!!? I inquired about the other two entrees and the waiter didn't know anything about it!!! He FORGOT to put the orders in!! I told him forget it but he pretended they were already preparing it, so at closing they finally bring out the missing entrees! I was so mad but because I was with friends and my daughter I tried to relax and finally eat, well, the food was absolutely horrible!!! Bland, no salt no flavor at all! I was so disappointed with this so called 'hidden treasure'. That I wouldn't even go back if they were serving free food!

I stopped by here 15 min. before they closed with a group of 4 and they sat us outside no problem. The hostess and waiter had a great attitude even though we were likely going to keep them past closing time. I had the Jerk chicken which was really good with a lot of flavor, but very spicy. I like spicy food so it was no problem, but it was too hot for someone in our party who could not finish it. Overall it was a great experience and is a cool building. The food was a little slow to come out and they had problems timing the food so it all came out at the same time.

I just returned from my first visit to Civilization and I'm floored. I'll attempt to be succinct... 1. Food: Excellent preparation and attention to detail. Obviously, someone is creative, attentive, and trying hard to use locally produced, high-quality ingredients. 2. Service: Certainly not up to the standards of a 3* Michelin environment, but perfect for what it is and where it is. (It's down the street form the Gainesville Greyhound station, for crying out loud. Civilization is laid back, but none of the employees made me want to regurgitate my dinner by referring my dining companion and me as "you guys," which I view as totally uncivilized. 3. Decor: It hits the sweet spot with an inventive reuse of an older industrial building. 4. Prices: Quite reasonable given the decor, food, and overall quality of the experience.

When I drove into a residential area, I knew this place would be good. I wasn't disappointed. The place got packed real quick and the parking lot got full as soon as the place opened. I would recommend to get here early. They do take reservations. I went there for brunch with several friends. Everything was made to order and the ingredients were organic and fresh. The portions was enough and the taste is out of this world. There is no need to go on building up this place. Just go there and see it for yourself. It is definitely a place to go.

From farm to table to closed at 9pm on a Saturday night even though it says 9:30 on door and website. We tried to call multiple times but only got a sketchy message about duplicate charges to people's credit cards with no helpful information about closing time. Poor customer service and time suckage. Have a little respect for your customers and post accurate information. So uncivilized!

HOLY COW!!!!! This place is the mother load. Got pakora, chana masala, beet salad, and wahoo fish with spicy guacamole, black bean sauce and chayote melon slaw. Every single component could have stood on its own. I ate a ton. Super clean food begging for me to have a BIG dark chocolate bar afterwards. Challenge accepted Civilization! Our waiter, the big guy with a beard and salt and pepper hair, was perfect. He was unbelievably hip and hardly needed to use his words which I greatly appreciated. I've never had an experience in which the waiter truly KNEW when to come and when to go. He realizes and practices his role as an element of the dance of a meal out, but makes sure that he is not taking the spotlight and trying to impress us. The non-verbal conversations had with the waiter were beautifully done. He added to the experience and remembered that he is not the focus of a romantic evening out, it is the love between partners that should always be the star!

Ever feel like you've been combing the beach with a metal detector, only to find a treasure chest in your backyard? Civilization is a stone's throw away, but a far cry ahead of many restaurants in town for their stunning commitment to local-centric ingredients, an ambitious menu, and plenty of beverages to satisfy any patron. The Space Off of W. 2nd and between 23rd and 16th you can find Civilization's signage poking out of the trees. Most of the parking will be to the right, but if you feel like trying your luck a couple of spots are right by the entrance. A row of tables sit outside for nicer days, and they all have checker board outlines taped to them for the enthusiasts. Inside you'll get a dimly-lit, chill atmosphere with accents of fun from the polka dot blue table covers. Enough space for most days, but I can definitely understand what people mean when they say Sunday Brunch is rough here. The Service Not a single thing to complaint about, which is great for a more pricey dining experience. Every request, from an iced coffee after saying I just wanted water to the appetizer coming out the exact right amount of time before the entrees, was handled with stride. Sit-down service in Gainesville can lean lackadaisical for those unfamiliar with this town. The Food Knowing they endorse local produce/products so heavily already had me excited, and asking around I got only positive feedback. Then I peek at the menu and see food styles from all over the place, with half of them vegetarian! Partly due to the build up from the aforementioned, as well as because of legitimate issues, I lost my 5th star here. - Pinenut-Crusted Goat Cheese (A): This was a fabulous special. Came with several crostini slices but also enough leafy greens to pair with any remaining cheese that missed our first pass. - Rava Masala Dosa (B): Came out a tad cooler in temp than I thought ideal. The onion-potato curry was solid, if a bit mild. Chutneys were mellow in flavor but the texture was just right for the soft crepe and potato combo. - Spinach-Tomato Dhal (C): This tasted very watery and void of spice. Apart from the knockout appetizer, the entree itself just seemed subdued. Indian cuisine has a reputation for strength in spice, but I did not get the kick I was after when I ordered. I specifically chose the entree because I haven't had any "as good as it gets" indian fare in Gainesville, and that remains the case. Final Thoughts Their iced coffee is really, really good. I almost didn't even get a glass but am glad I did. They specifically mention chocolate notes on the menu, and that holds true. I did try a bite of my date's meal, which was also a special for the night, and it was definitely more rich with flavor. I hope this was a wrong dish, wrong night situation, and I am eager to try dinner (and definitely brunch) again soon.

Excellent food and service. I highly recommend the food and wine. Very interesting menu. Seating limited, even on a Tuesday night they were bustling. Would love to go back when the weather is cooler and dine outside. Even in July heat, they were serving some people outdoors.

Civilization is a pretty cool place, ambiance wise. Everything else is pretty mediocre after that. The food is decent, but not gourmet. Spending $36 (including tip) for 2 for breakfast is just crazy. The coffee was not great. The service was not very professional. All of the employees just walking around in t-shirts and jeans.

I had high expectations before coming here and I can happily say that I was not disappointed. Civilization is tucked away on a little side street, providing a pleasant sort of privacy from the usual hustle and bustle. The building itself has a storied history that dates all the way back to 1929. It was originally a depot for distributing petroleum products delivered by a long forgotten railway. However, nowadays, it certainly delivers a relaxing and elegant atmosphere as an eatery. I especially like the teal and white polka dot tables! I went for a dinner date and the evening menu is full of exciting dishes. The ingredients are local and organic, but the flavors are a journey around the world, with entrees like the West African Gumbo or the Moraccan Braised Beef. Some other positives are the plethora of options for vegetarians and the fairly extensive beer and wine list. For an appetizer, I tried the pine nut crusted goat cheese over spinach with a balsamic reduction, which was quite tasty. For my entree, I ordered the special for the night which was a potato Napoleon served atop a bed of black beans, the potatoes covered in a rich, sweet red sauce, finished with a topping of more of the yummy goat cheese. I was definitely too full for dessert, but that just gives me a reason to go back! I highly recommend Civilization to everyone. Treat yo'self!

Will never return! On our lunch hour and waited 45 min for our meals. Had to return to work without our food! Had watched as 3 tables were served b4 us even tho we arrived first. Not first time we've been late to work due to the kitchen. Today we watched thru the kitchen window as the 2 cooks sauntered about...no rush, no worries for them! When I drove back 10 min later to return for our food, a waitress tried to seat me (only 3 in this small place). She was clueless! She then retrieved our orders, but put the greasy paper boxes in no bag. One order had the incorrect side. No apology from anyone for anything! Never again will we return...and it's our 3rd year of eating lunch here a couple times weekly. The kitchen speed and the service has deteriorated since the middle of 2014. Very sad cause the food is usually very good.

A locally owned Gainesville restaurant tucked away down an easily missed side street is a spot worth finding & trying. I went with girlfriends for Saturday brunch. Not terribly busy at 10am, but business picked as the morning went on. FOOD Our table of 4 shared the lemon ricotta beignets with ginger mimosas ($20 total for both items). The beignets (qty 5) were light and airy, not too lemony, with a blueberry jam drizzle. The mimosa pitcher was tasty, bubbly and a pretty pink hue and plenty for 4 of us to each have 2 glasses. I had the 2 poached eggs over black beans and rice with avocado and crispy tortilla (see picture). Plentiful with good flavor. I think my dish was $8-9. A friend had the spinach florentine over grits covered with beautiful heirloom tomatoes (see picture). The menu had a ton of variety overall for brunch from eggs to sandwiches and soups. SERVICE Superb service, checking in just the right amount. I don't know what the guy's name is (salt and pepper hair, beard, tall & handsome :) ), but he was a wonderful server - personable, friendly, and attentive. ATMOSPHERE The atmosphere is a mix between industrial and diner quirky with pops of color. A small space inside with some outside seating, too. Side parking but not a ton of it. If you want local and fresh, check it out!

Literally the best place in town. You have to come here!!! The atmosphere is fantastic, the location is easy to get to and the food is phenomenal. Brunch is my fav (1-because the food is good and 2-because I'm obsessed with breakfast foods). I recommend the avocado toast and mimosas. The southwestern breakfast is to die for. Will always be my favorite spot in Gainesville. Only tip: come early and expect to wait. They don't have a call ahead option so you're at the mercy of their popularity that day.

Yes I have to give it a one star for one reason only. Half of our party was waiting and they would not see them even though they wanted to order cocktails and have appetizers as the rest of our party were to arrive a little later. I really find it hard turning away customers willing to buy drinks and pay for appetizers why you're waiting for the rest of your party to come. Last time I gave it three stars but it lacked a certain amount of ideals that I thought were important such as superior service and this time we decided not to stay and left because we were unable to be seated. At 6:30 in the evening there is no one in the interior and that was a small party outside it really is a ridiculous situation for that reason alone I would not go.

Best vegetarian food! Their mushroom stroganoff made me want to slap someone. And their polenta gnocchi with pine nuts...divine! A true gem!

Went for lunch and sat outside. We ordered the Shrimp and grits and the fish tacos and a side order of potatoes to share. The meals came out and the potatoes never arrived. When we told our server we weren't interested in the potatoes anymore (3/4 of the way through our meal) she said ok, but never returned (another server finished serving us). Shrimp and grits were outstanding and fish tacos were good. Sitting outside was very nice. Overall a nice experience. Servers probably need a little more training (or better management?).

I went here for the first time tonight for dinner. I was not sure what to expect, and didn't set any outrageously high expectations. I was, however, rather disappointed. First of all, the place was virtually empty on a Saturday night. Not necessarily a good sign. Their menu had several interesting options, and for my entree I ordered the Sheba Plate. It was an arrangement of a few different Ethiopian tastings, but frankly, I cannot tell you what I ate. Firstly, the food came out lukewarm. It was far from hot, and it was also bland. I had to douse it in salt for it to have any flavor. It was basically a plate of multi-colored mush. Very unsatisfying, and almost off-putting. The one positive of the meal was the appetizer. It was a special of the day: fried zucchini with a chipotle aioli. It was nicely crisp on the outside, and soft in the inside, but still firm enough to keep the integrity of the vegetable. It was a pleasant start to the meal, but unfortunately did not correctly foreshadow what was to come. It is possible that I tried this restaurant on an off night, or should have chosen a different entree. However, I most likely will not be returning here in the near future.

We were visiting Gainesville to check out the museums and were looking for a vegetarian friendly place. Civilization came up a few times with some overall decent results, so we decided to give it a shot. Since it was around noon on a weekday, the place was pretty busy and we had to park across the street. We were seated immediately, however it did take a while to get our orders in. This was due to the crowd though and I don't blame the wait staff. I'm not sure if they're still slow during quieter times like some other reviews have said. Prices are just a smidge too high for the portion size, but the food itself was good. I ordered the grilled cheese with three kinds of cheeses and some peppers inside. The bread was perfectly toasted, however some of the cheese inside was not melted even though it was heated enough for the cream cheese to start being runny. Maybe they could have heated the harder cheeses more before putting on the cream cheese. In any case, it tasted good and the accompanying wedge potatoes were good as well (gotta love peanut oil). My wife had the beet salad which she was very happy with. Overall, our only complaint was that we were hungry less than three hours later after spending $20 on the food alone. There's definitely nothing wrong with Civilization and we will be trying it again next time we're in town, I'm sure. The prices are just a few bucks too high for the average college going budget, but since they source most of their ingredients from local farmers/sellers I can understand why.

Delicious sums up the food. I've been here numerous times now, but am just getting around to reviewing it. They have all fresh ingredients, they are a co-op and grow a lot of their own produce. The Sunday brunch is unique and I have not a bad experience as far as the food. The only drawback is that because everything's so fresh, food takes awhile (hence the 4 stars). This is not the spot for a quick bite. But the food is worth the wait!

I was sad to see 2nd Street Bakery go under, but couldn't have be happier with the business that moved in. I don't eat at Civilization too often, but I do make it a point to eat here for special occasions. When friends and family visit us in Gainesville, this is the place we recommend that they try first. After my wife and I got married, we took both our families here to eat. This place is that kind of special to me. Their recipes taste fresh and inspired, the ingredients are likewise stellar, and the space while a little on the dark side is inviting and calm. I feel well nourished after eating here. They have a lot of vegetarian options, but also have some great dishes for carnivores. Even if you typically don't eat vegetarian, I'd recommend trying some of their vegetarian dishes. The dinner I usually end up getting is their Indian Thali Plate. I never fail to order their spinach & strawberry salad either. The poppy seed dressing they make for this salad is heavenly. For lunch I usually go with their black beans and rice, which isn't at all boring like black bean and rice dishes you might get at other places. Civilization is also good at experimenting with new dishes. Always check out the specials listed on their chalk board. I was excited to see them using Seminole squash in a recent special. When going to Civilization do allocate a little more time for your dining experience than you might at other places. More often than not there is a wait. For dinner I recommend arriving close to their opening hours to beat the dinner rush. Regarding their service, I've noted an improvement in the wait staff. They are very knowledgeable about the dishes they serve, and have become more warm and welcoming of their guests over time.

Not recommended for big parties. There were 8 of us. The not so friendly-staff told us about 30 mins. We waited over an hour and left. Not a single f was given as they saw us walked away.

My sister and I went here first thing in the morning on a Wednesday. We were immediately seated and took our place in one of the retro booths. We ordered the shrimp & grits and the mutton snapper. Delish: literally, the second _best_ grits I've ever had (and I take my grits very seriously!). The service was excellent, the food delicious, and the restaurant has a fun/relaxed atmosphere. If you have all three, you get 5 stars in my book!

I'm going to give them another chance, but right now I'm giving them two stars for service. We had a large party which is apparently okay but you wouldn't know that by the huge wait we had. We didn't realize that children were not okay, otherwise we would have gone to Buddha Belly which is way more family-friendly; as it was, we had three children with us because we didn't have any other options. The food was okay but nothing special and very over-priced. The wait person seemed friendly but rather indifferent to our needs. The worst part of the excursion was the excruciating waits for the appetizers and the main course. With the small menu we should have had an easier time getting served. The one nice thing was they had a huge hula-hoop outside the building and the two older children played with that with the okay of the outside wait person, so that made it easier for the adults. I will go back with just adults next time and give it another try; it's very close to my house which makes biking to it very easy.

Civilization is a cool concept for a restaurant and their renovation of their unique space--which was built I believe as a fuel depot and later converted into an architect's office prior to becoming this restaurant--has provided them with an atmosphere unmatched in Gainesville. The interior is very welcoming and works perfectly for the concept of a New Floridian/sustainable restaurant. Unlike some patrons, I have no complaints about the service: my friends and I had good and prompt service if not exceptional nor overly-friendly attention from the waitstaff. My complaint however would be the food: I had the gumbo and found two issues with this traditional Creole dish. For one, it was too small a serving for dinner. Gumbo is known to be a very filling and robust dish and never have I ever encountered it being served for dinner and not being an ample serving but that was the case at Civilization. Also, the prevailing spice--hot peppers--was overpowering of all other flavors. This shouldn't be: Yes, gumbo can be very spicy but it should have a complex blend of flavors that comes through. There are many different ways of preparing gumbo but the recipe used here was probably the worst I've ever had in an otherwise decent restaurant. I was rather disappointed. My friends had the night's special, which I think was red snapper, and the Indian plate of a variety of vegetable curries. Both liked their dishes alright, but were not greatly impressed. The variety of dishes for dinner at Civilization is not that vast, which is ok, but given that, each dish they have on the menu should be exceptional. That did not appear to be the case during our visit. There were also only a couple desserts. I would hope Civilization would take a cue from restaurants like Saint Augustine's The Floridian that are trying to do like-minded approaches to food but that manage to do a bit better. A more varied menu and better attention to each dish would help, because the setting they have and overall concept are one that should work in Gainesville. I will certainly try this restaurant again but honestly expected better.

The brunch at Civilization is by-far my favorite meal in Gainesville. Everything from the atmosphere, to the decor, to the service is just fantastic. I went with a very difficult group of friends recently and one of the guys helping us (presumably the owner) was so accommodating and friendly, I've never seen anyone at a restaurant deal with my friends this well. The avocado toast is always perfect yet so simple. The lemon ricotta beignets are absolutely delicious and we order them every single time, no question. I always say I'm going to get something other than the southwest black beans and rice, but I never do, because it is so delicious. Everything on the menu is great though, the grits florentine (and I hate grits), the quiche, the French toast... Basically everything I've tried. A must-try if you're in Gainesville!

Review update: I've now been back to civilization about 5 times, and I have to say, every single time I am amazed at how delicious and perfect the food is. I can't get over it! I plan on coming back here as much as I can until I graduate in December; Civilization might be the thing I'll miss most about gainesville! You have to try this place, now!

A very delicious breakfast. We arrived right at opening and within 15 minutes the place was full, definitely a good sign. My sister got the swamp eggs, which is her "usual" and she let me try it. I thought it was excellent. The sauce they put on top was original and fantastic. My mom got the croissant sandwich with cheese grits and I got the BLT with cheese grits. First off, the grits were incredible. Admittedly, they are delicious because they are loaded with butter and cheese, but still they were definitely our favorite part of the meal. My BLT was delicious, but that's pretty hard to mess up and my mom really enjoyed her "massive" croissant sandwich. I also had hot chocolate and it was yummy. Overall, a great meal.

I was visiting a friend and we decided to have dinner a this place. The food is quite eclectic and I was afraid that they would not be able to pull of so many different styles. I ordered the sweet potato enchiladas and they were so delicious. There was this nice fresh, sour and spicy note to the dish that just made you want to eat more. I also ordered the pakora, which were good but could use more spice and salt. The sauce helped, but still not that great. The location is perfect for a small get together with friends or a nice dinner. On the night we were there, the service was very slow but I think they typically are not like that.

Cute place, but the food and service were lackluster. We tried the ethiopian platter (aka the sheba plate) and the chicken piri piri. They were both pretty bland. Edible, but they tasted like something you could easily make at home. Two of the assorted ethiopian dishes were very heavy and tasted very similar (split peas vs. lentils). Our server was nice but super out of it. He forgot to bring our bottle of wine. We sat for long periods of time with empty water glasses. Don't think I would come again!

tl;dr: Go, but expect to wait. I have been to Civilization many times and have sampled all of their menus (brunch, lunch, dinner). They serve an excellent brunch and lunch menu, and I highly recommend a visit. I think almost all of the ingredients are locally-sourced. It can get very crowded at lunch; we usually try to get there around 11:30 to ensure we can get in and out in an hour on work days. Brunch can also be a very long wait, so go early. The reason the wait is so long is because the service is painfully SLOW. Meals come out in an appropriate amount of time, but we finished eating in 15 minutes and it took another 15 for anyone to refill drinks, box up our food, or even offer the check. (And this is not an isolated incident; it happens every time.) Servers need to be more attentive, especially during lunch rushes. I do not recommend their dinner menu. I find it overpriced and under-flavored, and most of the dinner items are available on the lunch menu anyway, so save yourself a couple bucks and go at lunch. Closed Mondays!

This is our most favorite restaurant in town. The food tastes amazing, like food I have when I go to NY restaurants. And the atmosphere is perfect for having a date night dinner with my husband or a night out with the girls. I don't like a lot of noise. I prefer a quieter place like Civilization where my friends and I can hear each other speak without having to shout in each others ears. Even with it being quieter than other places, it still has some really good energy. Civilization had really nice decor too. I love the roof and how they decorate their tables. The food is amazing and spot-on each time. Also there is a really interesting drink selection of non-alchoholic drinks. This is my first choice of restaurants in Gainesville and recommend it to anyone who wants to know of a truly good restaurant in town. (I want to add that the pumpkin crepes are incredible, so is the avocado toast and their squash soup specials are amazing too).

First time going to this place. I had the enchilada casserole that was delicious. It was the first time eating what I consider enchiladas in a restaurant. It reminded me of mom's home cooking. The burrito like things you get at other places are foreign to me. I would have liked the yoke from the poached eggs on top to be runnier. The mimosas were yummy. Over all it was a great meal. I will definitely eat there again.

Food is good, overall but don't go if you're in a hurry. The coffee is wonderful, and usually the highlight of my visit. I am picky about lunch spots based on their coffee & will fire a restaurant in a second for this reason.

I'm not really sure how a restaurant can be this slow. Civilization can't even claim to be "slow good" like Satchel's. I watched four tables sit uncleaned for twenty minutes before anyone attended to them, meaning I waited an additional twenty minutes on top of another twenty to be seated for no reason. It took an additional ten minutes to receive drinks and it has now been another thirty minutes since ordering. Guess what? Still haven't been served. It is now approaching two hours waiting to eat. This is unacceptable. I will never come back to this restaurant.

Yeah, this place is special. I am reminded of that as soon I arrive to a full parking lot for brunch on a Saturday morning. The interior reminds me of a mini airplane hanger, yet the temperature is bearable. The dining room seating area is much smaller than I expected. As I step foot in the door, I am transported to another city- maybe somewhere on the West coast. Somewhere that has a collectively progressive mentality and need to move the human existence forward. Definitely not a Florida feeling. My advice is to trust the specials recommendation as well as your server. In their hands you will know that you are getting the best that is available at any given time. Our server recommended the Watermelon Lemonade, that definitely did not disappoint. Reminded me of aquas frescas that I was able to acquire when I worked in an area that had -real- taco trucks. There is usually a large table of customers right in front of the specials board that will give you terrible looks and block you from reading the specials. Just get over it and take a peek, since that is where the best items are. I did have a sense of regret as I watched multiple plates of Avocado Toast being distributed to other tables. The sandwiches are loaded. The BLT, for example, was packed full of delicious crispy bacon. The salads are fresh and simple, where one can actually taste the ingredients. And, the brunch items...Well, that is what customers flock here for.

Came here for brunch. Food was pretty nice, lots of decent options. I had the breakfast sandwich on croissant which was actually very nice; although this place caters very much to vegetarians, their vegetarian options are not the best in taste. The waitstaff was rather slow and seemed kind of bored, albeit very nice, could have just been shortstaffed. Luckily when we went, there was no wait to get in.

This place is amazing. I've never had anything but great service, good drinks, and spectacular food. I have been to Civilization three times and will definitely go back. It's one of the most inspired and unique menus in Gainesville, and they offer dishes featuring food from around the globe. Moreover, they offer vegetarian and vegan options (again, there are not many places in Gainesville that offer this, so that's a definite bonus in my book). I also really like that they take the time to offer pairings with dishes and beers. All around great place.

We had the Terranova sampler platter and enjoyed 2 of the three spreads- the olive/fig combo didn't bowl is over. We both enjoyed our entrees: the Country Captain Indian dish and the Fettuccine alle Vongole. The tres leche cake was absolutely delicious!!! We liked the decor and the service was very good. Based largely on our food, I give it 4 stars.

Visiting our daughter and son-in-law in Gainesville and went here for dinner on a Saturday night. First, parking was a chore. There was no parking available in the poorly lit lot behind the restaurant so we had to park in the nearby neighborhood. We put our names on waiting list and were told it'd be a 30 minute wait. There was no room to wait inside and outside too cold. Staff was un-helpful, did not offer a menu or drink while we waited. We went up to the bar to order beer and wine while we waited and were told they could not serve us! I was ready to leave but another server - perhaps the owner - came out and took our orders. They had a great beer selection. Our son in law wanted the last of one of the selections but it was warm so the server put it in the freezer for him so it would be ready be dinner time and gave him another beer if his choice. We had the poblano friters and each of us ordered different items for dinner and none were special enough to return. Blueberry crisp dessert was cold.

The one thing about this place is that it's very diverse. They have food choices that span over several styles and origins. Most of their food is organic and local, and it's one of the draws that people like about the place. In fact, they have a full garden right next to the parking lot. Speaking of the parking lot, space is very limited but usually isn't too much of a problem because the restaurant itself is relatively small. Wait times can be very long, and the servers are relatively slow. If you're in a rush for food, this place isn't the place to go, but if you don't mind relaxing and spending time with good company, the food here is worth going for at least once. The food is definitely overpriced, but that mostly comes from the organic/local produce they use. Random side note: if you sit outside, expect to get bitten by mosquitoes (unless it's cold enough where there are none). Civilization is located in the middle of the woods, so there are a lot of bugs nearby.

This is a very unique restaurant. It is hidden away off of a side street; I doubt I would have gone there if I had not had the restaurant recommended to me because it is so hidden away. It looks like the restaurant used to be an old garage or it is styled to look like it used to be one which makes for a very unique atmosphere. The service was fantastic. Our waiter came by very quickly to take our drink and then food orders and was attentive all night. We were served bread while waiting for our entrees. The food here is very unique. The various dishes don't seem like they'd all be on the same menu. As the restaurant's website says they serve "ethnic comfort foods from around the globe". We went for dinner and there were plenty of vegetarian as well as meat options. I got the sweet potato enchiladas and my boyfriend got curried shrimp stir fry. Both were delicious. The food is very fresh, not greasy at all and has great flavor. My boyfriend then ordered the Coconut Rum Tres Leche and loved it. He hasn't stopped talking about it since we left the restaurant. We will definitely be returning to Civilization. We're excited to have another great restaurant to add to our list of places to eat in Gainesvillle.

Some of the most wonderful food and among the best vibes you'll get in a restaurant, anywhere! For vegetarians, you can't go wrong at Civilization. Their Indian Thali (might have a different name, but its name escapes me) is just fantastic. I wonder if they have kidnapped a real Indian chef in the back? ;) I order their Indian there all the time, and it's authentic. What makes Civilization great is that they have vegetarian food from various cultures. I do Indian, but mix it up with a vegetarian southern-US style soup, for example. Can't do that in too many places. The ambiance of the place is the best Gainesville has to offer: it's classy and upscale. You don't need to dress up, but if you're wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you might feel a bit under-dressed. It's a great place to impress your significant other. Too expensive for a 1st or 2nd date, but definitely good for a special occasion. Depending on the night you go, some of the servers can be a bit elitist: I didn't know a parking spot was reserved, and a waiter yelled at me with a rude tone when I was on a date. If he explained nicely, I would have moved my car, but I didn't like his attitude, and I just took my date someplace else that night. Parking problems aside, the food is awesome, and 99% of the servers are amazing and deserve a big tip. This place is a co-op and whatever you pay is going to help the workers, which is good by me. Note: they do serve meat dishes, so if your religious preferences demand a pure vegetarian kitchen, this won't be the place for you.

Fresh, local ingredients. Inventive dishes with international flair. Best breakfast dish in town in my opinion is their Swamp Eggs! They recently added some delicious new things to the evening menu, and there is a nice variety of vegetarian and meaty options. I still enjoy the Indian thali but the layered eggplant and potato dish was really tasty last week! At lunch I like the salads and quiche. Yes, I'm a regular. Great space with indoor and outside seating. Lovely atmosphere, very cozy for dinner. Attentive and friendly staff and great service. Well done - we love Civilization!

Not bad. Not a huge breakfast fan, but I was so hungover from Dog the night before I thought some eggs might do me some good. They didn't. However, everything we ordered was served correctly. The service was a little slow, there seems to be some miscommunication between servers, unfortunately guests get the lesser end of the deal when this is the case. That was my only real complaint. Food was above average, freshness and quality of ingredients being the main attraction for me. I do however like the co-op side of the place though. I wouldn't mind going back, as long as I wasn't picking up the bill. I feel there are better optons at this price point.

Have been numerous times for breakfast. LOVE IT. Have had the pancakes, swamp eggs, avocado toast, homemade granola and yogurt, breakfast croissant, French toast, southwestern black beans and rice, and the scrambled eggs with potatoes. Usually have Charles as our server. If something is cooked incorrectly he's eager to make it right. Actually, all the staff is helpful and professional. Never disappointed.

One of the hidden treasures of Gainesville. Literally when you are driving here and pull into the parking lot, you will understand that this place is a well kept secret. Their food is very adventurous and delicious and the staff is genuinely nice and well informed of their menu. Breakfast here is a good bet. You may have to wait a bit for food but I didn't mind. I had their water buffalo lasagna looking dish (sorry I don't remember what its called) but it is very interesting flavor wise. Interesting tidbit from wikipedia: "There are very limited commercial herds in the USA, for yogurt and cheese products. In Gainesville, Florida, a University of Florida professor, Hugh Popenoe, has raised water buffalo from young obtained from zoo overflow. He uses them primarily for meat production (frequently sold as hamburger), although other local ranchers use them for production of high-quality mozzarella cheese." So I thought it was pretty cool to be able to taste it. They also won me over with their awesome Bigelow teas and decor. I came here for breakfast once with my friend after running a 5k and I remember their pancakes are delicious. Do bring your friends here when you're tired of the run of the mill restaurant food or you wanna explore some local Gainesville food. The food is really high quality and fresh and this is going to sound cliche but it really felt like my soul was being fed. When I was sitting outside under the sky at dusk, there was a soft breeze and intimate lighting and an old married couple were sitting across from me. It has a lovely homey feel to it that I can't do justice to. It's one of my top 3 places to eat in Gainesville hands down.

Civilization will definitely make it into our regular restaurant rotation down here. I had dinner there once over the summer shortly after moving here and again about a month ago. The space is open and airy but still cozy, and the service is friendly if not the fastest in the world. Order the guacamole just to eat the house-made tortilla chips, which are thick, salty, and vastly better than any other tortilla chip I've eaten at a restaurant. The chicken piri-piri is worth the "long" wait, and the Utopian salad is a dish to be reckoned with. This is not your wimpy side salad, and you will be full before you finish. And while you're there, remember my mantra: "there's always room in the dessert stomach." We've had both the blueberry cobbler and the apple dessert, the proper name of which I forget. Both were magnificent, and I pretty much licked the plate clean when my lactose-intolerant spouse tapped out. I should mention that my fiance found his Caribbean flank steak to be pretty un-noteworthy -- the steak was a little underseasoned, and you'd think a dish with the descriptor "Caribbean" would be served with a side that was a little more "ethnic". Perhaps some yucca or plantain in lieu of potatoes? Other than this, we will definitely be back here to finish sampling the menu.

Having been there a few more times it's on our list of places to go to. The food is reliably good if a bit over priced. The service ... well ... we walked out on 2 occasions because after 15 minutes nobody had even taken our order. On both of those occasions we simply walked over to Buhdda Belly There's not a lot of choice in GVille and the food *is decent so I'm sure I'll go back - though if this were a city with more restaurant choices I'm sure this place would go under pretty quick. When they're on it's a wonderful place to eat .. but it doesn't take much of a crowd to overwhelm the staff to the point that they start forgetting about people.

I really really want to like this place but the 3 times I went I was disappointed with the food. I love that it's a coop and the food is all local and I want to support that but the food is never up to par. I went for lunch and got a sandwich melt, it was lacking to say the least. The other 2 times I went were for brunch. I ordered the southwestern black beans and rice with poached eggs, the beans were quite bland and needed a hefty addition of salt and the rice tasted like instant rice. The cajun frittata was just ok, however, the potatoes that came with the frittata were crispy and delicious. The service was very friendly but the food didn't have anything to keep me going back. I hope they can change my mind.

Food is good and pretty unique. Probably no menu like it in Gainesville. Customer service has been consistently subpar every visit which doesn't really motivate me to return. Just before we left my husband ordered a cappuccino and it tasted like they made it with spoiled milk. We told the waitress and she did nothing about it. Seemed like the wait staff could care less about guests enjoying their experience.

I want to give a better rating. The food is pretty good. But I have had the same waiter the last two times there and he messed up our orders both times. The first time he didn't even put the order in. He "forgot." It took a looong time for anyone to figure that out. The next time we requested a simple modification to a dish and he "forgot" to tell the kitchen. I think if I do go back and he approaches my table I will ask for another waiter.

Service can be slow at times and not everything on the menu is great, but OH MY GOSH ONION RINGS. The first time my husband and I went we ordered one of their special appetizers, which was the beer-battered cauliflower. Our waiter brought us the onion rings (probably misheard us) but it was so worth it. By far the best onion rings I've ever had. We split the moussaka and upgraded to the beet salad. I got a ginger beer and then we had chocolate mousse for dessert. The ginger brew was too spicy but that's not their fault, it was just my preference. The dinner was salivatingly good and the dessert was pretty good but I think I just wanted something sweet so I'm not certain. We went back a second time when my friend was visiting and we again got onion rings, then between the three of us we split the polenta and veggies as well as the fetuccine della casa. They were okAY but not super great, but of course the onion rings were once again fantastic. I also got a hibiscus iced tea and that totally made the visit for me that time. Though not much else on their menu is appealing to me because I'm not a seafood person, it's definitely a great place to try especially if you support local produce and enjoy trying new things. The onion rings alone are worth it.

Really loved this place. The food was fantastic, a variety of drink selections, and a unique atmosphere. I went for brunch and had a breakfast croissant with grits and a Ginger soda. The breakfast croissant was a sandwich built from a big and fluffy croissant and had eggs, white cheddar and tomatoes. The croissant itself was fantastic; light, buttery and flaky. I could have eaten a whole basket of those and been perfectly content. The grits were delicious, very creamy and seasoned well. The ginger soda was good, albeit too spicy. The atmosphere is really unique, a clash of modern within an old building structure. I had a fantastic time and it's really become one of my favorite places. I would definitely go again.

JUST MISSED FOOD POISONING! We drove up from Miami to visit our daughter. We had been driving for 4 and a half straight hours. She checked to make sure this restaurant was open for lunch. The hours said they were open until 2:30. When we arrived at 2:20 we asked to be seated, and we were told they were closed. We explained that we has driven a long way, were very hungry, and that we had made a point to get there before closing since we were anxious to try this new restaurant for lunch. They were very rude and told us they would not seat us! We had to go elsewhere for lunch. Needless to say, we will never come back to this restaurant! I am glad we didn't eat there, since we probably would have gotten food poisoning!

I returned here on a Monday to get that bison burger. I took one look at the dining room, which was filled to capacity, and decided to get it to go. I figured that would take less time than waiting to be seated, and I was right. I got it home, unwrapped it, marveled at the bun and the lovely seared meat, and pounced. Verdict? It's a good burger (though still not my favorite in town) and of course the potato wedges are yummy. I noticed that the on-line menu has changed as well, which is encouraging (Paramount, take notes!). If friends suggested coming here, I would probably be willing to return. 3 stars.

The food was delicious. The prices were reasonable. I wasn't in awe of the place, but I had a quality experience. Very open about their ingredients and the waiter offered to go check to see if the bread was vegan without my prompting. That was really nice. I also noticed the staff were helping each other out a lot and they were all very courteous and friendly with each other. That says a lot about the quality of a business to me. Overall a very positive experience and we'll definitely be back!

Civilization is a beautiful restaurant. The interior has high ceilings and is warmly lit. They also have outdoor seating that will give you the chance to make friends with a cute little black cat who seems to hang out around the place. I've been here twice so far and both times the experience was lovely. The restaurant focuses on a locally grown organic experience with a menu that changes with what's in season and what's fresh. I recommend the beet salad with goat cheese, I ordered it both times I went and it was perfect. I also recommend anything with sweet potatoes. I've tried both the sweet potato enchiladas and the sweet potato and spinach burrito and both were fantastic with just the right amount of savory and sweet. Another thing I like about the restaurant aside from its delicious food and inviting atmosphere is their business model which is cooperatively owned. The people who work there are all members of the co-op who had to apply and then be approved by a member board and pay a membership fee. These people really care about the restaurant and its philosophy. Needless to say they are all incredibly kind, attentive, and knowledgeable and very happy to answer any questions you have about your meal. They also have their own compost pile! I've never been for brunch, only lunch and dinner, though I've looked at the brunch menu and definitely want to and look forward to trying it sometime. This place is so wonderful and they really care about what and how they are serving you. If you go here, you won't be disappointed.

We discovered this place a few months back and I can't believe we have been missing it for the last 2 years! I love that the wait is not too long, the staff are great and the food is locally sourced and doesn't take too long to come out. Try the mint citrus tea. You have to have swamp eggs and the Florida pancakes. We seem to always go for brunch but one of these days we shall venture over for dinner or lunch :)

Excellent on every level. I recommend the hot chocolate. The French toast was superb and the butter croissant was surprisingly large and absolutely scrumptious. Very good price for the quality an quantity of the food. An absolute must go!

We had brunch here and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to going back for brunch again and really want to try dinner. Good coffee (free refills unlike Sisters). Had avocado and grilled cheese sandwich on nice whole wheat bread with a nice side salad (poppy seed dressing) . Husband had frittata with some delightfully cooked potatoes on the side. Service was good and loved the decor. Saw a good beer selection (in bottles) and they make some teas etc. that we did not try. Dessert offerings sounded really good. Debating five stars, but will wait and see with next visit. Check it out for yourself.

I have been here twice, first time for a large party group of 8, where we don't expect to be in a hurry. On this visit we had the guacamole, it was good, however the portion of fried pita chips was small given the amount. Our next visit, ordered the guacamole again but it was not so good, more mushy and tasteless, same problem with not enough chips, yes the plate looked pretty, but the guac sitting in the bowl with no chip to finish it with was sad. We might have asked for more if the waitress had ever returned between dropping off the appetizer and returning with our food. The waiter and waitress on both occasions are just a little "off". Knowledgeable about the beer, but I wonder if they are drinking it just before their shift. The food is pretty good overall, it would be nice if there were one more option for that person in your party who wants something very plain. My brother and husband were not impressed with the portions given their meals were over 14$. The plates are not consistent in regard to portions, some are more filling than others. On our first visit, our water glasses remained empty much of the meal even though we had wine on the table, after salty apps, one needs a sip of water to wash everything down, we had to share glasses! They took way too long to return to the table and bring out our check after the request. On our second visit we arrived just before 8, after getting apps and wine we ordered dinner. The waitress did not remind us about the kitchen closing at 9, or even offer us dessert just before it closed (we were looking forward to dessert) and we finished up our meals just before 9, but waiting and waiting on her to return, we were notified with a curt "sorry, kitchen is closed" and presented with our bills. I am not sure if she has an emotional problem, or no personality or maybe just sad because tonight is her turn to do the dishes, but the kitchen was not totally closed because she was over behind the bar scarfing down a bowl of noodles and a glass of beer before we were finished at the table, totally unwelcoming, as if our money is welcome but we are not. All I can say is thank goodness we were out with the girls, do not take someone you want to impress to this restaurant, only take yourself if you don't mind being insulted.

I just ate here for the first time yesterday and the entire experience was fantastic. The atmosphere outside is very relaxing, and although I see that there are mixed reviews here for the service, the attention I received as a customer was near perfect. Very friendly and helpful service. I ordered the granny smith sandwich with melted brie and never wanted it to end. If I had a camera I would have taken a picture before devouring it. I had some fries as well and what was lacking in quantity was made up for in quality. For serous. I already know what I'll be ordering next time I go there (spinach and sweet potato burrito). Also, Civilization is part of a little-known program in Gainesville called Bicycle Benefits. Bicycle Benefits provides incentives to people who patronize local establishments on their bikes as opposed to cars. If you have the Bicycle Benefits sticker on your helmet, you get 10% any purchase at Civilization less than $50. Stickers are $5 and can be purchased at any participating business...FYI.

I'm pretty disappointed. I am an avid local business supporter and it frustrates me to see restaurants like these because there is much potential, but the delivery is completely botched. Atmosphere- the building is pretty interesting, cozy, and lends itself well to a romantic evening. The entrance is a little strange as you have to pass through the gauntlet of outside tables to get to the door. There's literally two tables hugging the doorway. Awkward for both the people eating and the incoming. Unfortunately, our inside table had sugar ants all over. While sugar ants don't really bother me, it's simply unacceptable to be dining alongside other creatures at a "nice" restaurant. Service- impersonal and smug. our waiter lavishly took about 5 minutes to explain the specials that we were not interested in and then didn't even offer to take our order right away. We had to wait for him to come back even though we already knew what we wanted. I like specials, but come on, it's food, not a work of art! chill out on it and come back down to Earth. Food- This is where it gets bad. The deep-fried chickpea app with cilantro chutney was good. Presentation was 0 effort, but I'll give them a thumbs up regardless. Since the food took a long time to come out, they graciously offered a plate of bread and butter. At first I was happy because it was a warm and toasty baguette with butter. Perfect, right? No. The bread had the unmistakable stale taste that it had been frozen for some time. How do they get away with this? Now, we ordered two dishes: Utopian Salad and the House Fettucini. Utopian? I'm so tired of these trendy restaurants with these grande overzealous names and then when you get the food, it's a total let down. Clever marketing I guess, but I'm not sold. First, the salad was way over dressed with a dressing that had too much sugar in it. This salad tasted like it belonged on the desert menu. On top of the sugary dressing were candied pecans which were good but the quantity was out of control. Same for the Blue Cheese. Every bite was an overwhelming explosion of Blue Cheese. Also, there wasn't much lettuce in the salad to carry the other flavors. Bottom line, the ratio and balance of flavors was totally off. It's like someone had a good idea for a recipe and then totally botched it in it's execution. Train wreck. The Fettucini was alright. It's nice to have homemade pasta and the texture was perfect, but the food came out way too hot. I almost burned my mouth. I would have rather it sit in Expo for 5 minutes then in front of my face. Also, similar to the salad, the flavors were simply out of balance. Way too salty. Overall, I can't recommend it. It's just another local restaurant that on the cover looks good, but fails to deliver on such lofty ideals. My advice to these folks is to stop trying to be a fancy urban up-scale restaurant and return to the basics. Stop trying to fluff your stuff when you're obviously still rookies. For the price you are charging me, I expect awesomeness. Not so.

Good atmosphere and great selection of foods using locally sourced, ethical meats and produce. Buffalo burger was very juicy, despite being lean, but wasn't a fan of the mayo that came on it. Good selection of soups/salads and daily specials.

I've been at least 6 times to Civilization, always for dinner mid week. We've always got a table, the service has been very warm and attentive (our last waiter told us jokes, but we forgive him), the specials interesting, and the food very good. This is the nicest space in town (from a building and design perspetive), and it feels intimate and nice as a date space, a casual gathering place, OR a place to bring a job candidate, another plus. Outside dining option is a plus, too. My fave dish is no longer on the menu: angry pasta. My second fave: mushroom stroganoff, and I rather dislike mushrooms, but this is so deeply flavored and intensely good, I just eat around the big hunks of portobello. The indian plate is pretty good, and the specials usually very good. Everything is done with good ingredients, cooked well. The tres leches coconut cake is to die for. Gainesville has a lot of restaurants where the bar is low. Civilization tries to raise the bar. They are a local place with a distinct identity, they use local produce, they are a WORKER OWNED COOPERATIVE. I know that matters little to diners that want their giant plate of asian fusion crap in 5 minutes or less, but I would rather support a restaurant with a social and foodie conscience that gives workers a say in how a place is run and shares profits. Only downsides is sometimes food takes a while to arrive (even when the place is half full) and they don't take reservations. But if you go on weekday and order a salad, you'll never notice either of these.

My husband and I really enjoy the food here. However, the service, not so much. We have had the same server pretty much each visit, and while he's not unpleasant, I would not call him friendly either. He pretty much reads you some specials, takes your order, brings your food, and doesn't come around again until check time. Thinking about leaving a tip that reflects the less than impressive service? Don't be surprised if you're tracked down in the parking lot and asked if the amount (10%) was a mistake. Seriously.

I'm basically obsessed with this place. After listening to my friends rave about the place, I finally visited Civilization two weeks ago for brunch. It was unreal. So delicious and everything I could have expected. I got the Florida Cakes and I'm still dreaming about them. After eating brunch there I went back the following week for lunch and was just as satisfied. I can't wait to go back again. Loved the ginger brew, granny smith and brie sandwich, fried potato wedges..i could go on forever

Finally got to try it today for lunch. Mondays the Jones is closed, so maybe thats why the joint is so jumpin' at 1:15 pm. We waited a couple of minutes and were seated at the 'big table' with 2 other couples. The quirky left over dining and breakfast room tables are a nice bit of whimsey, and compliment the building itself - apparently a former carriage house. Service: Attentive for the most part, not so hot on water refills. Order taken promptly, a slightly longer than expected wait for the food, but, again, the joint was jumpin' - no empty seats til after 1:45. On a Monday. Food: Yum. We decided to split an order of the avocado/cheese/veggie melt and the bison burger. She did the strawberry/greens/poppyseed salad and I had a side of the veggie/garbonzo soup. Both were excellent. the lovely redhead complained that there was bit too much salad dressing - she should have ordered it on the side - but it was perfect to my palate. The soup? The soup was heaven. Even sans the veggie chunks, the broth was thick and full of outstanding flavor. The burger was top notch, although it looked a tad small on the plate. Turned out to be just right. The small pile of red onion and the perfectly sliced tiny tomatoes complimented the white cheddar and greens in perfect balance. The melt was a tad less successful - the bread is quite chunky and a bit too heavy on the "whole grain" side to be a total win. And it was a bit soggy from the grill - it was crispy but had absorbed too much of the oil or butter. But, then again, it was a melt. The desserts looked awesome, but we were stuffed. Now that lunch has passed muster, a visit for dinner will need to follow. The menu is a little short on proteins for me to be a real regular. Two items is really limiting for choices. Add two more and I'd pop in more often. 27 bucks for lunch for 2 - with 2 soft drinks and tax/tip incl.

My girlfriend and I have been here a few times now. We most recently went for Sunday brunch. We love the atmosphere here because it is very funky and hip. We sat outside and the weather was delightful. Normally a little friendly kitty walks around for you to look at and pet if you wish. The servers remembered us from our previous visits and were very nice and accommodating. Our waiter gave us checker pieces to play while we waited for our food. We did not have enough time to finish the checkers game before the food arrived. I ordered the cajun frittata. It was delish. I dont even like eggs and I really enjoyed it. It had andouille sausage in it as well as roasted peppers and gruyere cheese. The home-fries on the side are really good as well!! Very crispy and beautifully salted. My girlfriend ordered the Florida Cakes, which I have had before as well. She loves them and I also enjoyed them when I ordered them. The Florida Cakes are pancakes with shredded zucchini and pecans with a side of blueberry compote and butter. They are very different but pleasantly surprising. My gf also got a coke, It was served European style in a can with a glass of ice. The coffee here is good. Its good black, with milk, and also with both milk and sugar. No matter which way you like it, the coffee is great. The dinner here is also good, but we havent been for dinner since Vday. Although the onion rings we remember to be very good. We recommend this place to someone who wants to enjoy something different in Gainesville. We will definitely be back for dinner and breakfast again.

You'd totally miss this place if you didn't know it was there. I highly suggest not missing is though, because Civilization has become one of my favorite restaurants in town. Not only are you supporting local eateries when you eat here, but the food is so fresh and definitely quality. I always check out their specials board-- I've had their pumpkin lasagna and res snapper from the specials. I rarely order pasta dishes when I go to restaurants but if they ever have these two again, I'd highly recommend them. For breakfast I've had the avocado toast which IS delicious. The bread they put it on is to die for. I've also had their BLT and they were accommodating when I asked if they could put avocado in it :) I'm addicted to avocado, what can I say? Personally, I think the prices are okay as they are now, but if they were to get any higher, I'd probably say it's a bit pricey. Service has always been good too!

April O. and I have been meaning to hit this place up since there are so many mixed reviews. After de-briefing myself and looking at the tiny menu online, I wondered; are the few plates of food they offer going to blow me out of the water? After racing there and nearly passing by the dark corner its on, I pulled up into the restaurant that doesn't look like your typical restaurant AT ALL. So be extra alert or you'll zip by it at night like I did! I liked that its a mix of old and new, but the first thing I noticed is that his place is TINY and there are not many tables. I think they should have more 2 person tables since we were among others hogging a 4 person table. Unless they want to switch to chinese family dining and squish different parties in one table :). I have been eyeing the Beer Battered Shrimp and was willing to sacrifice my diet for it. April O. chose the gumbo special. The beer battered shrimp was nice and large, and the shrimp was fresh and tasty. I'm not a beer-whiz but the Mitchum beer notes were definitely there and added a nice kick, although I didn't really taste anchovy and capers. My biggest problem with the dish was the breading, it was thick and crusted and offered no crisp, snap or crackle like I like. It literally was like eating toasted bread around shrimp. In fact, after a while I just got tired of eating it and had to go to the potato wedges (which were hot, crispy, and really good) to try to refresh myself. The abomination came with April's gumbo. I'm used to red gumbo, but we were pretty excited and anxious when we saw it as a grey gumbo with chunks of seafood. I had a taste and wondered why there was no flavor. Another taste confirmed it. After seeing poor April pour copious amounts of salt in it, it was already too late to salvage this code grey. We couldn't use any amount of salt to try to bring out the spices. We let the gumbo sit there unfinished. The service was OK, but we had to wait a bit to get our bill and water. Based on the high prices and eh food, we left underwhelmed. We didn't dare try the dessert. Maybe give this place a few more months to work out the kinks.

We had dinner here for the first time since it was 2nd street bakery - it is still hard for us to accept the loss of 2nd street - but we won't let that shade our review! The building is gorgeous, and Civilization actually does a better job decor-wise than 2nd street - Civilization is the absolutely the best-looking non-chain vibe restaurant in town. It's just nice to be there, and I was happy to see quite a full house on a random summer Saturday night - when most of G'ville is quiet and most restaurants go out of business from lack of traffic. Civilization is apparently surviving, which is great news for us G'villians! What a good vibe. Great beer and wine list, really good explanations and selections. The small plates/appetizers/soups/salads are all ridiculously good. As part of Terranova catering, this kind of stuff is clearly their specialty. The entrees were just not as good as the small plates. They weren't bad, but they just missed the mark somehow. Civilization reaches a little too hard in my opinion - too many ingredients/flavors - that the entrees are not all they could be. And I think there are actually too many of them on the menu. If I were the owner/manager, I'd think about arranging the menu more like tapas, with even more of their delicious small plate options and fewer entrees. Overall, we should be proud Civilization is surviving and prospering. If you haven't been, at least go have a drink and soak up the ambiance!

So far I have been over six times in the last month for lunch and many times before that for dinner or brunch. Every vegetarian dish I have ordered was spot on: unique, new to me, delicious. I have experienced excellent consistency in any dish I have ordered twice. The food quality is more than good enough to keep me a repeat customer. Some downfalls: Service CAN be spotty, waiters/waitresses are sometimes disorganized and it seems any one of them will attempt to deliver ready food, but will be unsure who it goes to and will offer it to different tables until someone doesn't refuse it. One waiter/waitress is generally indifferent towards the customers. Happiness isn't a requirement, but positive interaction may make for a better dining experience. Overall it is my only go to place in Gainesville for lunch. Docked one star because it isn't perfect, but what is?

Having grubbed (yes, grubbed, not dined) on two separate occasions, I can unequivocally say that this is one of the most exciting new restaurants in Gainesville. Not only is their cooperative business model worth supporting, but their dedication to fresh, local ingredients (as opposed to most restaurants that source from an industrialized food system not worth perpetuating) is worth supporting. Now, onto the food...the first time I grubbed at Civilization, I had the special: Atlantic cod cakes, on a bed of arugula with a small side of dill and cucumber salad. The combination of flavors was simple, but distinct. I am not one for using salt, pepper and hot sauce to cover the simple combination of flavors. The cod cakes were served with a tasty, spicy lime sauce. The second time I grubbed at Civilization, I had the coq a vin. While, I have been to French restaurants that do this dish better, the combination of flavors was richly balanced. This dish was served with some of the tastiest fried potato wedges I have ever feasted upon! So, yeah: overall, this restaurant is worth every penny. Oh, and space is beautiful...makes for great ambiance. Oh, and the first time we grubbed, they went above and beyond the call of duty, given that they still didn't have their liquor license.

Good spot for eating a little healthier without giving up flavor. Prices are a little high for what it is though.

Excellent food and an easy going Sunday morning vibe. The French Toast and Quiche were a dream come true. The Grits were scrap the plate clean good. Coffee would make any Java Junkie cry tears of joy. Do not miss a brunch opportunity here.

Best vegetarian food! Their mushroom stroganoff made me want to slap someone. And their polenta gnocchi with pine nuts...divine! A true gem!

Have been numerous times for breakfast. LOVE IT. Have had the pancakes, swamp eggs, avocado toast, homemade granola and yogurt, breakfast croissant, French toast, southwestern black beans and rice, and the scrambled eggs with potatoes.

3 stars.

Seriously.

Oh, and the first time we grubbed, they went above and beyond the call of duty, given that they still didn't have their liquor license.

i'm torn between 2 and 3 stars. i went here for the first time last night. i heard a lot of great things about this place; it's one of the few locally-derived restaurants in the city. the location is beautiful and so is the building. there's a little black cat outside that loves to cuddle. the acoustics are a bit shitty in there, though. we were practically screaming by the end of it. HOWEVER. it was a thursday night and there weren't many people there. the table turnover was so, so, so slow. i have no idea how these people make it (brunch, i hear). it took a long time to get drinks. i took a long time to get silverware. it took a long time to order food and it took even longer to get the food. we got there at 6 p.m. and didn't get out until 8:30 -- and we left early. our party was still waiting for their check. we had places to go before december 12th rolled around, you know? we ordered a few appetizers: potato croquettes, guacamole dip, and the dip sampler. the dip sampler was strange. the olive tapenade was overwhelmingly sweet. the artichoke dip blew up my mouth with garlic. the guacamole was nice. a thousand years later, we received our meals. mine was surprisingly good -- shitake mushrooms over rice. my fiance ordered the flank steak with chimichurri. he ordered it medium rare but it came out looking practically blue. we ordered the rum and coconut tres leches cake for dessert. it was a nice cake base but had way too much alcohol. it was doused. i love supporting local businesses but i doubt i would go back. it was uncomfortable and not a place i would want to linger for a long period of time -- unless i was forced to because i had no silverware and was unable to eat my food. ... which happened.

Good food, the service is on par with IHOP. Maybe even worse. Flo from IHOP will at least ask me how my food is.
