**RING** **RING** "Tiffany!" "Uh, Uncle Ivan?" "I'm driving up from Florida and stopping off in Gainesville for lunch." "Ooooookaaaay." "Don't worry, I won't crash your sorority woodser or t-shirt making function or whatever..." "What-EVER." "....I just need to know where the hell they put Burrito Brothers." "OH! Well, you know where the old one was, right?" "Of course, I was going there when you were a zygote." "Well, it's now around the corner from there. It's in the church." "What?" "It's in the church." "What the hell are you talking about?" "The church! It's in the church!" "Uh....seriously, what the?" "For the last time, it's in the church. I've got to go now." "All right. I'm sure there are important t-shirts to be made." "What-EVER." I backtracked to BB's original location, the corner of 13th and University. (For those alum who haven't been back to Gainesville in a while, it's now an empty field.) I located a church and I circled it once, twice, three times. Right about the time I about gave up to hit Caribbean Spice, I spotted it. A little sign pointing to, yes, a church courtyard that said, "Burrito Brothers parking." Through fate, summer session and tenacity, I managed to park around back of, again, that church. I entered the courtyard. It's a bit weird actually--a burrito joint (and not just ANY, but the venerable Burrito Brothers) leasing a church's kitchen. Oh well. I can have my spirit AND bowels moved in one single stop. The line wasn't too long, but as I mentioned, it was still Summer session. Gainesville in August is hot enough without having to stand in a church courtyard to eat a burrito. Now some lament the passing of BB's location not necessarily due to geography but due to some mythical grease trap located on premise. The grease, they contend, is what made a Burrito Brother's burrito truly worthy of the name. Uh-huh. Maybe. Honestly, my Primo Burrito still tasted pretty much like the first one I had 20 years ago. That's not to say that it was good; NOR was it bad. Burrito Brothers has long since passed into my repertoire of culinary nostalgia in which descriptors like "bad" or "good" have no meaning. Were I the objective sort, I'd say that it's really not the best burrito (though the guac has always been and still is good). I know that the kids are digging on Chipotle down the street. We didn't have that when I was their age. Hell, we barely had an Internet on which we could complain even if we DIDN'T like Burrito Brothers which, at the time, we certainly did. (I mean, had I created a BBS post that said "Burrito Brothers SUCKS!" I would've been flamed with all the power at 28.8k modem could muster.) Poor kids. When all is said and done, they'll look back at their college career, what with their Starbucks and their FaceSpacing and their well-designed, focus group tested, corporate burritos and what will they have? Will they be able to stop by two decades later, call their friends' daughter and harangue them about where Chipotle is? Most certainly not. So from that standpoint, from the perspective of a Gator who remembers the electric EXCITEMENT of a Galen Hall coached football team (e.g. Emmitt to the left, Emmitt, to the right, Emmitt up the middle. Punt.) I grant Burrito Brothers FIVE stars.

Only been there once, but that was enough to make an impression. Super casual and outdoors, but the food was GREAT. Very fresh ingredients were used and my burrito was great, with just the right amount of seasoning and sauce. I definitely enjoyed it more than any chipotle burrito though the serving size was smaller. I would definitely go there again, if there were more readily available parking.

Ahhhh...memories. No, they aren't the biggest burritos or the cheapest burritos, but the ingredients are always fresh and delicious. The fresh guac, when available, is to die for. I almost always get a side of either the guac or the black bean dip. My standard order: Primo Bean Burrito with black beans, double wrapped, with onions, no peppers (just can't do it anymore), 2 extra red sauces, with a side of guac, and a lemonade. I've been going there for over 20 years, and the food hasn't changed at all. It's still the one and only Burrito Brothers. I once ate 7 meals in a row at Burrito Brothers when I was in college.

I went to Burrito Bros. with recommendation from many friends in the Gainesville area. For such a whole in the wall (literally), it does not disappoint. The price is definitely affordable and it is close to campus. The food is freshly prepared when ordered. I would recommend at least trying this place at least once while you're in Gainesville. It can get pretty busy during the typical lunch times!

  • Eve A.

You can't beat the classics. Everyone who's graduated from UF for the past 30+ years knows Burrito Brothers is a tradition for a reason. Had lunch there today for the first time in years, and enjoyed every bite of my primo bean burrito (with all the extras). I hope they find a home in the near future that will introduce them to a whole new generation of fans.

There is a reason why I have not been Here for three years. But I can't remember and I don'tRoadtrip to Orlando? have a review for this place. So I decided to check it out. Food Quality: the food quality is a alright. the steak is better than Chipotle , however the chorizo that they use it is really fat. but it taste soo good but fat..... Overall the food taste fresher than Chipotle and homemade style Service- they can get back up order so easily - their set up is not efficient enough to push through clients. overall - If they had a bigger location and better set up - the place can be legit. So as for right now they just deserve a 3 star.

To put it simply, Burrito Bros is a happy mixture of great Mexican food and nostalgia. The end result is one of Gainesville's best kept secrets. The ingredients are fresh, the burritos are tasty, and the guacamole is so good, I might just roll over dead should they ever discontinue it. With Burrito Bros' kind staff, low prices, and GREAT food, I challenge you to walk away unhappy. As a tour guide at UF, I am constantly encountering alumni whose first question is: "Is Burrito Brothers still there?!" I'm always happy to report that it is. It's not fancy. It's not modern. It's just plain and simple Burrito Brothers. And you truly haven't experienced Gainesville until you've eaten there.

  • Kaitlin H.

Really good, cheap food. I don't know why so many people go to Chipotle when Burrito Bros is literally a 30 second walk and has better, cheaper food.

  • Charles S.

Can't complain much in my opinion. It's just a burrito after all. But, my order is always correct and everything is ready very quickly which counts for something I suppose. Try anything with pork.

This place is the bomb - I went almost everyday since it was walking distance from where I lived. Really doesn't matter what you order because everything is delicious with the same base ingredients, but GET THE RED SAUCE. LOTS OF IT. I miss this place so much! Good place for a meal with your dog too as long as they're not rowdy and you clean up after them.

We went to Burrito Bros. on the recommendation from a Gator. Burrito Bros. did not disappoint. We had collectively the beef primo, chicken and bean primo and chicken and chorizo primo. Definitely appreciate the review and friend recommendation to double wrap the burrito because it will fall apart. Our daughter is leading towards FSU... What a shame because we would have loved to come back to Burrito Bros. Guacamole was great and super fresh. 10/15/2013 Here we are over a year later... Our daughter is a Seminole but that doesn't stop us from stopping at Burrito Bros. On our way to Tallahassee. BEEF BURRITO PRIMO DOUBLE WRAPPED... Excellent!

I was disappointed to read the negative reviews on here. The burritos are delcious and the meet flavorful. Best rice in town!! The tortillas are hot and soft (much better than the ones at Moes or Chipotle). I've been a burrito bros patron for a long time and they are able to add new things to the menu without compromising the quality of their staple items. You cant say you've lived in Gainesville unless you ear here at least once. They've been here since the 70's (one of maybe three places in gville who've managed to do so). They wouldn't survive if they weren't good! Not in this economy.

Great food. We loved our meal and would not hesitate to recommend this for great, affordable Mexican food. The burritos and the guacamole were top-notch. The chips were delicious. The different salsas we had, especially their green sauce, were equal to any we've had around the country. Although preparing and serving fast food, especially Mexican fast food, isn't brain surgery, many restaurants fall miserably short in the simple execution of feeding people something tasty. This place excels and will always hold a special place in our heart. Every time we go to a Gator game we make sure we stop for a Primo+ burrito w/fresh guacaomle and chips. Delicous.

This place is one of the things I miss most about college. It's a hole in the wall, literally. There is no parking and it's hard to find because it's hidden behind a building. The food is so good though. Definitely try the rice and red sauce.

About half the time I drive past Gainesville I make the hour round trip to drive in and stop by Burrito Bros. The guac is the best I've ever had (including living in New Mexico), the burritos are huge, delicious and keep for quite a while (great when you're not a native), and the employees are great. Make sure to get some extra red sauce, it's delicious. I only wish the Tampa branch had done nearly as well (or were nearly as good).

When you bite the burrito water pours out. I do not think that is supposed to happen and it made me lose my appetite. Double bad...

I come from a Mexican household, so needless to say I have pretty high standards when it comes to Mexican food. I've been here a few times and have tried their tacos and burritos. Their shredded beef is not very tasty and their tortillas are TERRIBLE. I'm sorry, but floury and dry paper-like sheets do not make a tortilla. I seriously had to unwrap my burrito and eat the inside contents because, I have no clue what kind of dough they use for their flour tortillas. It is so gross. Their chorizo is okay, but the spicy seasoning overpowered the tastiness that comes from chorizo itself. Ugh. What a shame that people don't know what real Mexican food is like. This place is not Mexican. Just because the name "burrito" is in the name does not mean this place is Mexican. This place is like a nicer version of Taco Bell to me.

  • Sarah M.

I go here every day that I can when I'm in town. Primo burritos are amazing, and the red sauce completes the experience. It can take awhile to get the food, but if you call ahead its very fast and convenient. Best burritos. Period.

  • Aphorismo G.

It used to be on the corner next to Chinee Takee Outee , Falafel King and the Bike Route, but now it's hidden in the back of a Church, kind of weird, but they gained a few outdoor seats and expanded the menu. mmm...good food cheap...only make quac when the avos are in, but don't waste time get it while you can. Eat it all because it's good.

  • Adam N.

People rave and rave about Burrito Bros, and it's been around forever, but I'm just really not impressed. I have been there a dozen times TRYING to like it. It does not seem that clean, the tacos are mediocre, enchiladas are just so-so. I think it's a nostalgia thing, or tradition thing, or maybe the hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. I do like that you can sit inside the Church to eat your meal. It feels like the owner forgot about that place a long time ago and it's running on auto-pilot. Dos Staros.

    (2)
  • Meg I.

NO no no no no. NO! This is NOT good Mexican food, people. This was one of the most bland burritos I've had in a long time. Seriously. Taco Bell packs more punch than Burrito Brothers. The beans looked and tasted like crap, the ingredients were terrible, and the tortilla wasn't even warmed. Also, why am I at a church eating my Mexican food? That was just downright awkward. I understand there's some nostalgia going into people's reviews... I guess back in the day this place used to be good? I'm not buying it, but the truth is, it sucks now so get over it. Stop telling yourself and others that these burritos are good!

  • Luke M.

I have been to Burrito Brothers several times and have been satisfied with my order every time. I prefer to get the Chicken burrito supreme and the Beef burrito supreme. Ask for some extra red sauce on the side and your gonna leave happy and full. I'm very active in sports and working out so the amount of meat and protein you get in both burritos are very well worth the price they charge you. Keep it up Burrito Bros!

    (4)
  • Julia M.

It's perfect, food is freshly made, prices reasonable, definitely not corporate food. I prefer the beef burrito and love the GUAC.

I like to celebrate waking up to go to my 10:40am class by gorging on tacos. Who doesn't? Three tacos go for around $5. I usually get chicken. Pork is great too. The best part beside the well-seasoned/cooked meat is the mounds of freshly grated cheese they put on top. If you see someone scooping up the cheese that fell off tacos, covering it in salsa (ask for their delicious red and green salsa btw) and then shoving it into their gullet not unlike a pelican does to a fish, you should come over and say hi to me. The guacamole and the limeade are pretty spectacular as well. Outside seating only --good for dogs, bad for people who don't like being cold. The burritos are good but don't expect those giant ones like Chipotle. I haven't had anything with beef in it and I hear it's just allright.

    (4)
  • Shara L.

So delicious! It is kind of small and strange looking. But the guacamole is so good I could just eat a bowl of it with a spoon. The red sauce is great and I usually pour about 4 containers on my tacos. Best of all, the employees are very understanding and helpful about my daughers gluten allergy. She can have the fried chips and crunchy taco shells here which is rare. And they will clean their hands and make her food first so as not to contaminate it from touching the flour shells. Love it!

Another kick to the teeth of what was once a regular staple food joint. I've been in town since 1984, and can remember when Burrito Brothers was fast and cheap. Yes, prices go up over time, but BB has far outpaced many other restaurants' increases over the same time. But what really gets me is how slow they are. Their register help must be told over and over what you want because if it is not on the current register screen they are seemingly incapable of hearing it. Listen to the order first, and THEN start typing. Portioning is inconsistent on burritos and tacos. You can sometimes make it through a third of a burrito before encountering your jalapenos, cheese, etc. Their guac is usually pretty good, but last time it was so light in color, I swear I saw a streak of mayonnaise in it. It was like a cold, super salty spread with a hint of avocado. I don't mind the church thing, but I wish they would send someone in there to wipe tables periodically. Nostalgia can only mask so much. Maybe the new semester will bring in a new group of employees that care?

    (1)
  • Matt H.

I wish I could give a 3.5 but as we all know Yelp doesn't do that. Their guac is amazing....like literally out of this world awesome...yet its so simple. But you can tell they make it fresh and not from a pulp that is delivered frozen and set out to defrost. Get the guac before it is gone because they run out often. Burrito wise I get the primo beef burrito with extra cheese and sour. The flavor in their ground beef is addicting yet simple just like the guac. Something about it keeps bringing me back. I'm not a big fan of their tortillas as they have very little flavor in my opinion. But a lot of people love their tortillas so maybe it's just not for me. In regard to the red sauce I have never tried it even though I have eaten their probably 25 times. One of these days I really need give it a shot. I guess what is holding me back from this place being a 4 or 5 star is the service. It's not that they don't get you the food fast but I just don't like that the customer seems to always be the least of the employees concerns. But I guess that's what you get with a dive built into the side of a church LOL.

Writing a review about this local institution is probably unnecessary, but I like sharing my opinions... soo....... Here's what I have learned in my 4 years living in Gainesville. There is a divide between Burrito Bros and El Indio. People tend to *really* like one or the other, and since they are within 2 blocks of each other, try both and decide for yourself. So on the the food: The guacamole is home made and usually superb. They even grade it each day (A+, A, A-, B) based on their opinion of the quality. Nice touch. My only complaint is the price and portion - an order is good for 2 people, too much for one. They need to offer a half order and I'd buy it way more often. I almost always order a primo beef burrito with extra sour cream and adding onions. Yum. An extra red sauce on the side is recommended and included at no cost. The other meats are good, but this is my fave. The chips and sauce are to be recommended. And its fun to feed little crumbs to the many sparrows that inhabit the patio area. Also great are the tacos, but know they only offer crunchy tacos, no soft tacos here. I particularly like the chicken tacos. If you get them to go, buy the time you get home, the juices have softened the shells a bit and improved the texture IMO. I tried the sweet potato/bean burrito one time. It was OK. I'm not a big fan of beans, but the sweet potato flavor was quite nice. Free refills on drinks add to the value - but its the food that makes the place awesome.

Very close to campus, quick service, consistent and good food, affordable prices. Not very authentic Mexican food, but good chow nevertheless that is served hot and very quickly. Great for a quick bite to eat while on campus.

possibly the most over rated place in Gainesville My veggie burrito was a cold cracking storebought tortilla, canned refried beans, and a little bit of chalk flavored cheese. Neat location ... too bad it's not worth going to.

Burrito Brothers is a Gainesville institution. UF alumni have their burritos shipped to them all over the country. I like the Primo Beef Burrito and always get it double-wrapped (two tortillas) to hold in all the goodness. If you like spicy, add the diced jalapenos. Make sure to ask for extra red sauce to pour onto the burrito prior to each bite.

  • Joe C.

This place is disappointing. I think that most people that rate this place so highly is due to some nostalgia, and the fact that so many people have told them they should like it over the years. Lets face it, Gainesville has a lot of really crappy places to eat, so it's not that hard to stick out as decent.

    (2)
  • Daniel S.

This place is definitely overrated. The only thing Mexican about this place is the food style, and the Guacamole. The fillings are mediocre, the sauces are mediocre, the tortillas are terrible, and they only have outside seating which is too hot for the summer.

  • Briana L.

Since I have moved out of Gainesville, I daydream about Burrito Bros. and miss it terribly. The introduction of chicken at Burrito Bros is what turned me from my first attempt at going veggie. BB is simple and extraordinary. Their rice is squishy and mild and very yummy and their guac is sinful. Obviously, since the chicken is what "turned me," I can only reiterate how perfect it is. This is largely due to BB's green salsa. I think I could control myself at this point, and just get delicious mashed red beans in my tacos. BB is not traditional Mexican fare in any way, but it also tastes like no other burritos I've ever had. My friends and I reminisce and salivate because we miss it that much. If you are a student at UF and have yet to take part in the rite-of- passage that is Burrito Brothers, get yourself down there and order a combo. You'll be stuffed and very happy.

If you're looking for Mexican burritos, you're at the wrong place. This is an American style burrito place that has been a very popular local place in Gainesville. It relocated a few years ago to a church (which is now abandoned), so it's a rather strange location, but hey, it works. I usually order a chicken burrito. It's good, but not amazing. Their beef burritos are just normal ground beef that is alright quality. They have great guacamole here. They even have a white board with a grade of the quality of the guac that day. It can be pretty pricey though (around ~$4-5), but is is fresh and homemade. They also have homemade limeade which is pretty good. It's a nice change of scenery from on campus food and is reasonably priced (especially compared to on campus prices). I like that they have outdoor seating, which is nice on a nice sunny day.

I remember this place fondly from my days as a student. I even remember the old location. The burritos are amazing, and worthy of their cult-like following. I always got two both bean burritos with extra cheese and extra sauce on the side. I've contemplated ordering a few hundred and having them shipped to NYC.

  • Richard ..

I had a beef primo burrito with salsa and guacamole; it was barely passable for food, much less Mexican (in all fairness, perhaps they're not trying to be Mexican.) The ground beef was tasteless, as was the cheese. It was super loaded with lettuce and sour cream. The tortilla fell apart like it was old and past expiration. VERY dissapointed. Won't go there again.

This place has the fortune of being across from campus, and the misfortune of being next to Chipotle. My friend insisted on coming here, complaining that its neighbor was expensive. Shit costs exactly the same except Burrito Brothers' food is tiny and unhealthy-tasting. Also, "Burrito Brothers TACO Co?"

So I intern at a place sandwiched right between Chipotle and Burrito Bros. and at lunch time all the employees flock to Burrito Bros. I always go to Krishna Lunch because its cheap and good. Today I got tired of the normal Indian fare and decide I will finally venture forth to Burrito Bros. This is that story. I walk to Burrito Bros. and there is no line since its still about 11:30. Good, I only have half an hour. I check the menu and the chicken burrito with green sauce catches my eye. I order that with a side of chips and a water. 35 cents for water? I let it slide because I don't want to disturb the cool indie vibe, but secretly I shake my head. Sometimes you just have to eat the cost of a paper cup. Price is decent besides that though it is comparable to other Mexican places in the area. I sit and my number is called. The burrito looks good but the wrap is loose and cracked in a few places. The taste was pretty solid; the green sauce is subtle (as it should be) and the chicken is plentiful. It also had good red rice and some lettuce to add a bit of crunch. I was content with the burrito. I look towards my chips and suspiciously eye the red hot sauce that I must dip my chips in. The thin, vinegary sauce is ok, but doesn't Chipotle at least give a side of salsa with their 1.50 extra chips? And doesn't Moes give a side of salsa with their free chips? Call me Americanized but damnit I want something of substance to dip my corn chips into. Also the chips were a bit stale and cold, at 11:30 I can only assume I was given the chips leftover from last night. I did take off some points for the fact that the chips were trying to give me hypertension. By the time I had brushed off each chip I literally had about half a teaspoon of salt on my burrito wrapper. Thank god I paid 35 cents for that water. By the end of the meal the burrito had fallen apart but I don't mind messy food. I ate the rest with a fork and pieces of the broken wrap. All in all, it was decent. I would go back when I'm tired of Krishna Lunch for the burrito, though sadly I might have to skip the chips and lame no salsa (and I LOVE chips). Also would not go out of my way to eat here, though being across from campus they probably don't have to worry about that issue. Seems kind of like one of those Gainesville institutions that feels it can skate by on location and hype. If they tweaked a few of their recipes (and went easy on the salt) it would be worth an extra half star or so.

I try to eat at local places instead of chains, but next time I'm near campus and crave Mexican food Chipotle will be getting my business. Everything about this place but the guacamole was just meh. I cringe to think how tiny my burrito would have been had I not gotten it primo. Not worth the price.

Good food that makes people come back. At random days out of the blue, if you go there late at night on a slow day the food may not be as good which I believe is normal for small businesses. Other than that, every time I get a chance to go to Gainesville I try to pass by. I miss their old location next to Target Copy but the new one is nicer and very welcoming. I recommend their guacamole & double wrapping any burrito.

Through a narrow, fenced-in gate; past this gigantic Christian center next door, and under a sunny pavilion you'll find Burrito Bros. in all it's glory. Burritos: good. Tacos: good. Guacamole: darn good. For a vegetarian option, I enjoy the bean and sweet potato burrito, but it's got to be one of those days. If you're feelin' spicy, check out the chicken burritos and add a bunch of red sauce. Prices are a bit high, but it beats the junk they serve at Chipotle or Moe's. It's made with love and care and with a speck of hipster (I mean, you can't get away from these people, they just all work at the good places in town).

I miss burrito bros! The one place I always make sure to hit if I'm back in town. It's always great!

I love this place more than I can even put in words. My mom ate BB while she was pregnant with me and I hope to eat it until I die. That sounds so dramatic...but really...I love this place. The guac is phenomenal and I love me some bean burrito! Give this place a chance...

  • Alex E.

Burrito Brothers earns a very solid meh from me. It's not bad, and it's longevity is great and all. But honestly, the burritos are fairly bland unless you drench them in the red sauce. Good place for a cheap taco, but with El Indio right down the street...

Primo beef burrito with sauce on the side. Need I say more?

  • Amanda W.

This is a Gainesville institution and I try to stop in every time I come back home. The guac is definitely worth the trip when it's in. It's always hard for me to decide between the beef tacos and the beef burritos. It may not be fancy (and it's definitely NOT a bland chain), but it's always worth the trip. I really like the patio in the new location (hoping they'll keep outdoor dining as an option if they still plan on moving).

  • Will S.

Mixed feelings about this place. The employees are extremely nice and friendly, but the food is just plain bland. I'm sure the veggies and most of the ingredients are fresh, but there's not much flavor. They push the guacamole hard, but you're paying 5 dollars for a few chips and some pretty boring guac. I'll go to the Chipotle next door every time.

My wife is a Gator (a UF grad, not an actual reptile) and has been raving about this place as long as I've known her. Even when we lived in LA, she insisted that this place made the best burritos. She even when as far as to have Burrito Bros. send her burritos via FedEx for a party (yes, they do do that - check their website)! I was skeptical - the burritos didn't reheat that well and the place breaks my rule about needing a Spanish word in the name of the restaurant other than "burrito" or "taco." I got KO'ed by a place called Mighty Taco once so I had reason to be wary. Having now made the trek to Gainesville for a BB burrito, I have to admit, they are pretty darn good. Nothing fancy but good food doesn't always have to come with a pretty wrapper. The taste and the quality of the ingredients put this place way above any of the chain restaurants. Their menu is pretty limited, but that's probably why they're so good at what they do: make a few things right rather have a wide variety of crappy products. This model works great for In-N-Out in California and it works in Gainesville as well.

  • Tu-van L.

Contrary to popular opinion, I think this place is merely alright. Cheap burritos and you get a lot for what you pay for, but selection is limited and meat is lighty peppered on the border of flavorless. At least the quality of meat and veggies is good and not too greasy so this is your better option for fast mexican instead of Taco Bell.....

  • Robert P.

The Guac is great, the burritos are pretty good, and the parking is HORRIBLE. If you can, walk or take a bus to Burrito Brothers. There are signs everywhere warning where you can't park, which basically rules out most everything within a block. If you're really hungry, Chipotle is a better deal for your money. But if you want to support a local restaurant and a different atmosphere, Burrito Bros' Chicken Primo burrito is good. Be sure to get a side of "red sauce".

    (3)
  • Rach H.

Decent food, love the sliced cheese sprinkled on top of the Guac. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because the Guac isn't always available, depends on the weather and crops and blah blah. I always get the chicken burrito, also like that I can bring my dog since it's outdoor seating.

Oh Burrito Brothers...how I miss you! You may not be the very best burritos ever but you are pretty freakin' good. How would have I gotten through college without you?

Quick and cheap like several other nearby Mexican places, but the food isn't up to par with El Indio or even Chipotle. The service is good and the outdoor seating is infinitely nicer than El Indio's.

Great burritos and tacos made fresh in front of you. A UF tradition. The meats are fresh along with the veggies. Their vinegar based red sauce is sublime. They even ship to wherever you got your real job. Please note: Make sure to double wrap your burritos. Mush less mess.

A Gville hallmark. Food is fresh and tasty. The red sauce is probably my favorite anywhere. The tortilla chips are made fresh right in front of you and at lunchtime you can bet that the line is out the door. There's a reason for that.

Although I'd never been impressed with their burritos as-is, I tried one with guac and onions and it finally did it for me. I'm still not crazy about their flavorless tortillas (I guess they're healthier? I'd hope) but the extras made up for it. I like the new courtyard and shaded tables, allowing you to eat before your meal becomes a soggy mess. The girl serving meals out the window was unpleasant, but random unfriendliness has always been part of the experience, which is why I probably still won't go very often.

Listen, Burrito Brothers is a divider, not a uniter. People either love it or wonder what's the big deal. The chicken and chorizo burrito may be the best burrito in Gainesville. Their guac is first rate. Even their regular beef burrito is strangely addictive. People rave about the red sauce, but it's just red sauce to me. Their salsa is hands down the best in Gainesville.

  • Anonymous P.

Wonderful and I don't even know why. The burritos seem so simple. The ingredients don't seem gourmet. Just delicious though. I love the chips, the bean dip, the salsa, the guacamole, everything. I'm craving Burrito Brothers right now in Boston.

As always, what a good meal! The vibe has changed a lot - from literally a hole in the wall to an awesome indoor space. I loved the vibe either way, but now I don't get caught in the rain when I visit. The food is just as good as the first time I went. Definitely try it out! I usually make my own burrito, but honestly I think I've had one of everything.

Pros: delicious interesting burrito, I had the chorizo and chicken burrito, very tasty. I almost didn't order it because I was doing a brunch thing and I thought the chorizo might be overpowering, it was not. The entire burrito was very tasty and delicious and I finished the whole thing, which I have never done. Some one commented that the tortilla is thin, which it is. For me this was a plus because it is my least favorite part and I usually wind up leaving half of it on the plate, not so for this burrito, in my opinion the filling and wrapper were perfectly balanced. I did not get primo, but I did add guac. The space is very pleasant and the music a mix of 70's rock was great. Cons: New York prices. I'm from NY and I love being pleasantly surprised by the inexpensive ness of FL, not so here. A regular chicken and chorizo burrito with guac was just over $9 and when it came out I was pretty surprised at how small it looked. I don't know what I was expecting but visually it was a let down. The service is non-existent and I saw the sauce containers but thought they were ketchup because of the shape and color of the container; it would have been nice if the person behind the counter could have mentioned that and pointed me to the utensil bar instead of dumping a basket in front of me and walking away. Summary: I will definitely come back, it was delicious and I'm used to paying NY prices with unfriendly service.

First a note to people that complain this isn't like chipotle next door: duh. Every restaurant has its way of making a food type. Do you complain that the Burger King fries are different from McDonald's fries, who are also different from Wendy's fries? No? Then stfu about it not being up to your marginal palate. I've known this place since my lad years in 2001 when it was a hole in the wall unit on 13th St. It's since moved twice to this new corner unit with air conditioning, indoor dining and craft beer taps. The food has not differed from a decade ago. The tortilla is a thinner wrap than chipotle and Taco Bell, even thinner than Flaco Tacos. You can think of it as reducing your carb intake. I got the primo beef burrito, which has marinated beef and cheese sauce lettuce and sour cream. The size is decent to consume without feeling stuffed. They even make guacamole without over seasoning it. My burrito was flavorful from the marinated beef without being too leaky. Lack of rice filling helps too (carbs, baby) My critical points are price and cleanliness. This being a local shop since the 70s and not a chain I can see why the price would be more pricey compared to nearby shops in terms of cost vs quantity. However, I can't forgive a dozen flies buzzing around a good establishment near the tap area. That seems to indicate they are not cleaning the area at the end of the day or maintain a sanitary area during business hours. Customers would be repelled if they have to share their food and beer with insects. Overall the food is the same and is consistent with its earlier days; it just has a new venue. I'll probably visit again.

I still love this place and in the past would have given it 5 stars but sadly the food quality and consistency have significantly dropped while the prices have risen. It's a shame considering how nice their new location is. Instead of being a low key built in the wall phenomenal burrito maker they are now more akin to a flashy inconsistent chain... If you're reading this Burrito Brothers please fix the issues in your kitchen.

Being in on the secret is a cool feeling, especially when the food is solid. As a student I fondly remember Burrito Brothers as its old HITW spot, but nowadays the young folk are getting a bigger, more established business to chow down at. Coming out of the "hole" and into a world of competition I feel like BBs is good, but too many factors hinder me returning with any frequency unless I'm in the area and in the mood for dealing with the hassle. The Space New location is right at a block west of University Ave. and 13th St. and first impressions were great, as far as the new building. They have ample seating indoors, unlike the outdoor sweat-fest that the former location provided, and now have an added bar for grabbing some suds that includes two TVs front-and-center, as well as one on the opposite wall. No one, however, will be surprised to learn that parking is still a laborious hunt through the nearby streets for a slice of curb. I try not to knock any business across from campus for this though because really they all suffer from overcrowding and many customers are from foot traffic anyway. The Service The ordering process consists of walking to the bar and placing your order, so not too much to judge. That said, with the bigger space I'd like to see a step up in wait service too. We sat at the bar, ordered, and planned to be there to catch some college ball. I had a few simple questions concerning the menu that were quickly answered and it only took about 5 minutes before the food was ready for us to devour. A plus for me: the manager was out on the floor helping out with the crowd and socializing a bit with patrons, which is nice. At one point I asked about any hot sauces and he was happy to snag a couple of sides of their house stuff for us. The Food You saw the stars and were probably waiting for the downside...well here that comes. My gf and I came in and we, combined, got: - 2 tempeh burritos w/ sour cream (B+) - 1 side of chips & guac (D) - 2 local beers (C) Starting with the positive: the burritos were very filling and flavorful, price considered. The chipotle sauce had the kick I was after, there was plenty of protein, and several veggie options are free to add. I'm a buffoon so the tear-inducing habaneros got tossed in with no hesitation. Total costs w/o tip was $35. Let that sink in... lost your appetite already? Yeah, I feel you. The beers were about $1 more than other places in town sell for (especially served in plastic cups), but the part that hurt was the chips and guac which, coming in at $5, were about half the volume I was expecting based on similar pricing at other, high quality places in town. When I order chips and salsa/guac/queso I envision a shareable app that most of the time includes tons/bottomless chips. This was a sandwich baggie's worth of chips and a modest ice cream scoop's serving of guac. Guac was decent, though I'll say more blended than I prefer (I like it a bit chunky). Final Thoughts The only part of this experience where quality and cost were in alignment to me was the burrito. ~$8 got me a stuffed, balanced burrito with plenty of flavor to savor. When you start weighing in the hands-off service, plastic beer cups, skimpy chip/dip, and cheap packaging (even eating in, your food is put in tupperware and a paper sack), I can't help but to say "adios, amigos" to the idea of becoming a regular.

I do not want to go to Burrito Brothers anymore. The location has moved and grown twice, while the food has remained mostly the same, and the prices have skyrocketed. Burrito Brothers has gone from a student's fast food dream bargain, to a pricey nostalgic treat on a cozy patio, to a sterile, overpriced mutation that I cannot stomach. The prices have out paced inflation by magnitudes, and it just does not make since to go there again. Burrito Brothers was something of an institution in Gainesville, like Dubs and Skeeter's. The first time my "one day husband to be" took me there was in the late 70's. Burrito Brothers was a little hole in the wall place facing 13th street next to a print shop. The inside part where you stood, ordered, received your food was all of about 50 square feet packed with beautiful bodies pretending they were not pressed against each other, while outside more bodies waited, sweated in the sun until enough left that they too could squeeze into the air-condition comfort of unnatural closeness, and smells of greasy hamburger meat browned and crumbled in a hotel pan covered in oxidized foil, and hot just starting to turn rancid oil churned from heat in giant dented pots on gas burners, ready to turn hand torn corn tortillas into hot salty chips. OMG, I LOVED THAT PLACE! We would get 4 or 5 black bean burritos with no lettuce and extra sauce on the side, receiving folding money back from our wrinkled 5 dollar bill, then sneak into Goering's Book Store to eat. We would eat and talk and read. We read books like The Anarchist's Cookbook and Whitman's Leaves of Grass. It was sort of our very own self-styled Dead Poet's Society. That is the way I remember it. That block has long ago been leveled, turned into a parking lot for a cold church that would ban books we read, my marriage, and my lifestyle, if they could, and soon CRA money will turn the parking lot into a big chunk of a building with apartments and shops where perhaps someday I will buy a new iPad. The food at Burrito Brothers was never great, but it was awesome, and the black bean burrito with no lettuce and extra sauce on the side, today tastes just like the ones I ate nearly 40 years ago. To me they have not changed, but the store has moved twice, and what once was great fast food cheep, has become a poor value. Yes, Burrito Brothers is now a real restaurant, while the food is pretty much the same. I may get nostalgic, and I may pony up 20 dollars one last time when the new mixed use complex blocks out the sun where the original store stood, and I may stand at the corner of 13th and University looking at the big chunk of a building with trendy stores and beautiful apartments, and I may look across look across University and remember when the big wall entrance built to discourage kids gathering there to voice their concerns, and I may look at the new school building squeezed onto one of the few remaining green spaces of the old Land Grant Campus, and passers by may wonder if they should call somebody as tears stream down my cheeks, and I may close my eyes real tight and click my heels together like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, and, if you are very quiet, you may hear me whispering, "I don't want to go to Burrito Brothers anymore :: click, click:: I don't want to go to Burrito Brothers anymore :: click, click:: I don't want to go to Burrito Brothers anymore :: click, click..." What Fassbinder film is it? The one-armed man walks into a flower shop and says: What flower expresses days go by and they just keep going by endlessly pulling you into the future Days go by endlessly Endlessly pulling you into the future. and the florist says: White Lily. - Laurie Anderson, White Lily lyrics

My wife and I picked up lunch today and brought it back to work for lunch. It was my first time eating from Burrito Brothers and I'm going to copy and paste our IM conversation since her comment gave me the idea. Me: burrito was good but not that impressed overall. tortilla was oddly thin and stuck to the wrapper. the chorizo was just okay and honestly not that much food for almost $20. kind of glad the burrito wasn't bigger or I would feel terrible, but not a huge burrito for the price. glad we went there but I won't be dying to go back. Wife: lol yelp review Me: I felt the need to critique it since it was the first time. and we never eat anywhere besides publix or stuffing our faces with whatever we can while we are watching [kids] Other things we noted: -I never visited the old location(s), but this one is nice and casual for lunch. Doesn't cater to a specific crowd, saw all types of people in here -Patio was approximately 137 degrees and no one in their right mind would sit out here, even if the shade umbrellas were up (they weren't) -Good local beer selection for a place I didn't expect to have a good local beer selection -Ice machine is volatile and has a mind of its own. It made loud banging noises and threw ice out onto nearby customers after an employee refilled it

Tucked away in the back of a church so you know this good has favor! A staple in Gainesville and you have to know it's here but the burritos hit the spot. I remember waiting outside the hole in the wall Burrito Brothers on NW 13th Street. Yes, I'm that old. So, walking into the new place today really kind of blew my mind. Shiny and bright. Air conditioning. Lots of tables and chairs. Red sauce in bottles. Beer. They bring the food TO YOU?? So so weird. I guess "good" weird, not "bad" weird. The menu is basically the same. The burrito I ordered was OK today. Not great. The rice was kind of al dente. And for some reason, it literally disintegrated in my hands. But, they serve the food in little baskets now, so I could switch to fork and knife. Anyway..it's still Burrito Brothers. Just the new and improved version. Time will tell. I'm curious to see what other people think about it. Oh...also...the tables inside are arranged so it's kind of hard to get around. And we didn't see the "guac" sign. Maybe it was there and we missed it?

Not sure what the hype is all about. Poor quality food for the price (once you actually make a burrito out of it). You end up paying more than the chains for less and lower quality food. 5 bucks for chips and guacamole? It's not even that expensive at Chipotle and they give you more than 11 chips there. 3 dollars for "freshly squeezed" country time lemonade. Cool. The burrito wasn't even wrapped like a burrito. It was like a taco with one end slightly folded in and the "guts" spilling everywhere. Flavor is lacking in everything except the rice and the red sauce, very American for a burrito joint. Pretty sure my burrito came with cheese but I couldn't be sure since I never once tasted it. Not surprising though since the 3.50 beans w cheese and chips came with a pinch of cheese. For the prices they charge you'd think they actually put the ingredients in at a quantity people would like. I'm full, but I'm disappointed and will not be coming back or recommending it in the future.

A little, hidden restaurant behind Firehouse that sells tacos. The wait was under 5 minutes. It was $6.59 for an enchilada-sized burrito with some sauce. It wasn't a bad burrito, but it was definitely under the median of burritos that I've had. The sauce was good, but the tortilla was powdery and filled with mediocre ingredients. Go to Chipotle, which is right around the corner (and more visible) or, if you have time, go to Burrito Famous a few miles west of here. I won't return here.

When I used to take a bus route that went by Burrito Brothers, I would eat here pretty frequently for lunch. They are currently behind the Presbyterian Student Center off of University Ave. Off of 1st ave they have a small parking lot (3-4 spaces depending on vehicle sizes) which is usually full. Don't count on driving here and getting a parking spot. It's usually the exception to park without a problem, unless it's during the summer when the students are gone. There is street parking around this area you can utilize. The service is fast and friendly, and the owners seem to staff enough people to keep things running smoothly. There have been times where the owners have shut down the business for a couple weeks at a time. I've heard that the staff is compensated during those periods, so that the downtime doesn't affect the workers ability to get paid. I love eating at a place that treats their workers with respect. As far as the food goes, I started off eating their tacos which didn't excite me all that much, but then quickly moved to the burritos. I've been happy with the quality of the burritos, and usually get a regular chicken burrito. If you're a guac fan, Burrito Brothers knows how to make it well. They'll even grade the guac so you have an idea how good the guac will be. Along with a burrito I usually get an order of chips and red sauce. The chips from time to time will be stale, which defeats the purpose of them advertising that they're made in-house. I don't care where they're made if they're stale. I agree with other reviewers that the red sauce here is really good. They recently added jicama slaw to the menu, which I feel would work better as an item in their burritos as opposed to a side dish. If you have a problem with the food, they want to hear about it directly and resolve any problems you might have had. They even have a note posted asking for customers to bring up any problems with them so they can get them resolved. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping by and trying the burritos...and don't forget the guac.

Very good burritos. I like the beef and bean burrito, add sour cream. The red sauce is tremendous as well. It's a little dive in the back of another building with no parking, a walk up order window, and only outdoor seating, but it is worth it. This may be my favorite burrito in Gainesville!

After countless trips to Chipotle, I decided to try out a new place.. which lead me here. A little hidden, but my first thought was that hole in the wall places are usually amazing treasures. With my boyfriend for two chicken and bean primo burritos, chips & salsa, and 1 drink it was about $21.00 You pay extra to get a primo for 'extra' chicken and sour cream.. Outside seating and it smelled like trash very badly. It was about 6:00 and they were already sold out of the guac. Overall, the burrito was half the size of Chipotle and lacked flavor. Didn't stand out. Probably will not be back. I had higher expectations.

Though there are a gazillion burrito places in Gainesville, Burrito Brothers is the only one for me. A total dive, with horrid parking and service only through a little take out window, Burrito Brothers produces food that is nothing short of sublime. Their Chicken Burrito with Black Beans is food for the gods. Add a side of Guacamole and you are in another dimension. Your taste buds will thank you again and again. Don't miss the red sauce they offer on the side. Heaven!

I had the beef burrito. Tortilla: nothing special and not toasted as much as I expect / enjoy. Filling: lots of meat. Tasty, but could use a little more flavor Other: burrito wasn't closed on one end. I also ordered the primo, expecting a big burrito, but ended up with one half the size of chipotle's I'd go again if I lived locally, but only for a quick burrito fix if I were in the neighborhood.

Chorizo and chicken burrito is on point. The place is hidden behind chipotle in a zen little area. Make the burrito a primo if you have an appetite. A nice change from your chain Mexican joints. Definitely worth a try.

Tucked away behind a building on University across from campus, Burrito Bros has been a UF institution for years. Decent but not outstanding burritos and tacos will definitely fill you up. Guacamole is excellent and the salsa nicely spicy. What makes Burrito Brothers is meeting up with friends to catch up at a patio table. Arrive early as the line builds quickly at the order window. Will definitely go back!

Friends told us we should eat here while in town. It was a little tricky to find and no signs for it by the way. It was for sure a hole in the wall. They are in a run down building witha service window you walk up to. The patio was dirty with dead plant material and trash. My boyfriend got the pork burrito, he said it was great. I got a chicken burrito, it was ok. We got guacamole and chips which were no way worth $5. And for being fresh guacamole it was very bland. I think we will pass this little hole in the wall in the future.

This place is simply not good. I know a lot of people who love it, but it's mostly a nostalgia thing for them as this was once pretty much the only burrito place in Gainesville. The burrito meat fillings (all of them) taste like they were marinated in tap water and the tortillas have a paper mâché consistency. Also the red sauce that some people swear by...pretty much tap water and red food coloring. It's not so much that the burrito is bad, it's just breathtakingly tasteless. Considering typical burrito ingredients, it's actually pretty amazing that some semblance of flavor doesn't work its way in there by accident. Once when I was in grad school the student paper messed up and printed free burrito coupons for one whole week and left out the catch about having to sign up for a credit card to get it. The coupon basically said "come get a free burrito every day this week" So I give burrito brothers 2 stars for having the guts to honor the coupon and basically pass out free burritos all week long (I heard the paper later compensated them for the loss). However, and remind you I was in grad school, the free lunch from this joint was not worth the walk across campus. With at least a half dozen better burrito options in town, I'm surprised this place still exists.

Always a pleasure to eat here. And when the guac sign is on, it's even more of a pleasure. It's hard to find if you're not looking for it, sort of tucked away next to the church on University, on the east side of campus. Beautiful patio seating area and yummy food. Burrito, chips, guac, and limeade is my go-to meal here.

I live in midtown and have been to Burrito Brothers around 10 times over the past 2 years. I am a fan of their chorizo, and their chicken is ok. The last 3 visits have solidified my bad opinion of this restaurant. On all 3 occasions one order was extremely small. Basically, if you don't pay extra to get "primo" you risk the chance of getting a burrito the size of a Taco Bell $1 loaded griller. The quality is not much nicer either. On my final visit to Burrito Brothers I got the worst food poisoning I've ever had in my life. I'll spare details, but felt like I was going to wind up in the hospital. Btw, they only have like 8 ingredients, so expect options like "red rice or no rice."

Primo beef burrito with some extra red sauce on the side is all you need here. My girlfriend and I always come here when we're in town for football or basketball games, and it never disappoints! Really hope Burrito Bros sticks around for a long time, at least long enough to take my kids here!

I have NO idea why people like this place. The taco shells and tortillas are horrible, beans and rice are not worth writing home about. Overall, very disappointing. I'd rather eat at taco bell, but seriously people...La Tienda and Chipotle are sooo much better OMG!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
