Some people think "The Mill" is the same as the "old Mill" that used to be over by the Oaks Mall. I'm not so sure as technically the name is the "Bakery Mill and Deli" versus the old "Mill Bakery and Deli". Regardless, the current Mill still serves up some of the biggest and tastiest muffins you'll find in Gainesville! The owners do a great job on the bakery side of things baking their famous muffins of all types, a variety of bagels, lusciously rich cakes, tasty cookies, and other sweet things. At different times you can find different offerings from the bakery such as baklava, frosted cinnamon raisin bread loaves, or napoleons. I guess it just depends on their mood and maybe what ingredients are fresh from their suppliers. Surprisingly, their baklava was the best I've had in town even versus what you'd assume to be authentic preparations from places like Falafel King. Also, the cakes are superb and the slices are humongous. One slice of cake works out to about 4 or 5 servings, at least to me. Also, my favorite sandwich bread is their fresh baked swirled rye. It is extremely dense with a nice texture and very satisfying. Their wheat bread is quite good too, but the rye is superb. And a loaf of rye bread is probably about 2 pounds so you definitely get your money's worth! Beyond the bakery, the Mill is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast with my friends. In fact, it seems to be one of the favorite places of many people in Gainesville as you may end up waiting in line for a table on a busy Saturday or Sunday morning. The breakfasts are an incredible deal, and everything is good and filling. My heartiest recommendation goes to the "Country Breakfast". It should be renamed the Farmer Boy and a half breakfast for the sheer amount of food you get! It's 2 eggs, your choice of meat (breakfast ham, sausage, or bacon), choice of toast (4 pieces) or biscuits (2), choice of potatoes/grits/fruit, 2 buttermilk pancakes, and a whole cup of sausage gravy. This monstrosity -- and I mean that in a good way -- comes on 2 plates that take up approximately half of the tiny tables you sit at! The pancakes here are very light and fluffy but are paradoxically very satisfying and filling. The french toast is awesome too, and one order is about equal to half as much more or even double what you get at many other places. The only thing that would make these items perfect is some fresh whipped cream, fruit compote, and real maple syrup. Don't forget to order a coffee with breakfast as the coffee is actually quite good here with free refills. Service here is typically pretty good, but I come here often enough with my friends that they remember us. I've even had former employees and even other regular customers recognize me as a Mill customer in other situations which was funny. I have to admit that while I've always heard the sandwiches and salads here are good, I've never had them. Breakfast is so good at the Mill that it is the only thing I like to order here! I wish I didn't write such a glowing review about this place because now it means I'll have to get there even earlier to avoid the long line waiting for a table! That's just about the only downside as the amount of seating is rather limited. The Mill is a terrific breakfast place with great bakery items, and now I'm looking forward to this weekend's breakfast at the Mill with my friends...

Went today for lunch, I had the three cheese grilled cheese with ham and tomato and a side of Cole slaw. Every bit was yummy. This is normally a breakfast location for us we are Sunday regulars. Five stars here!

Pros: delicious fresh bread. Sandwiches made with fresh bread made in house. Cons: sandwiches are high priced for the particular sandwiches they are selling.

For those reading the reviews, the mill is a place to come and just eat. They are small and usually under staffed but the place is small and probably couldn't handle more than two or three servers. If you look at the size of the kitchen it can't produce the volume of food a larger place can; however, we love this place and have coming here for years. it is what it is. The food is good and basic. The muffins are great. You won't get fancy and you won't get fast, but you will get consistency. Come here for what it is and enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Enjoy! We are!

VERY Disappointing... Have heard and read good things about Bakery Mill&Deli. Decided to try it out for breakfast. I have never experienced a place with such poor pancakes and french toast. Perhaps we ordered foods that aren't their specialty, I don't know. However the service was slow, servers seemed very stretched and in the weeds, however friendly. The restaurant was not busy, and the food took exceptionally long. Then when it arrived, we were extremely disappointed. Food arrived piping hot, but very bland. Also, a weird comment. They do not carry butter. They have margarine, but at a breakfast restaurant, I prefer butter. Again, this may be a weird preference, but I was shocked to find out they don't carry butter at all. We were planning to order some of their baked goods to take home with us, but after such bland food, we did not want to purchase anything else from this establishment. I would not return to the Bakery Mill & Deli, nor do I recommend to others.

Best breakfast in town. The food is served fast. The wait staff is attentive and friendly. It's sometimes tough to get a table, but the deliciousness that awaits is worth the wait. The baked goods are the best around.

I got a Greek salad that was not even close to fresh! How hard is it to keep fresh veggies in stock. My wife ordered the Park Sandwich and was disappointed that she could not have fresh avocado, they only had an avocado dressing made with sour cream.

We had breakfast at the Bakery Mill & Deli. The food and service was very good. I had a cheese omelet and my husband had the Western Omelet. The omelets were huge. It came with the best grilled red skin potatoes and biscuits. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back.

They have a really small shop out in Progress Park in Alachua (across from the new Santa Fe Perry Center) too. I've never been to the actual restaurant in Gainesville so I can't comment on wait, service or the like. That said, they have the best Ruben sandwich I have had in town. The corned beef is super tender, served on the marble bread. A good portion of sauerkraut that isn't overly bitter (usually when places don't rinse it.) You get a choice of a side. Fruit or chips. I'd like to try the actual restaurant for brunch sometime.

I tried to come here once before but it was so busy I couldn't get a seat. This time I successfully got a table. The place feels crowded and disorganized but has a pretty good breakfast. The bagel's aren't in the top 5 in town but if you stick to the omelettes you can't go wrong. They also have a pretty good bakery and good options. The waiting space until you get a table is awkward and it makes the people eating feel rushed which is the biggest downfall of this place. If you haven't been by before make a stop but it's a tough place to become a regular at.

I visited The Mill this past weekend with a party of six, in Gainesville for a Homecoming reunion. There are only two tables capable of seating six, and one was occupied by a single man sitting by himself, not yet ordered food. My friends and I were discussing whether to wait, leave, or maybe see if the man would mind if we joined him. As we did so, a server (I later learned his name is Don, I think) very rudely interjected to us as he walked by "He was next in line" (referring to why the man had the table). We weren't even sure he was talking to us, it was so stern and unprompted. We continued our discussion, and Don came by again and said "He's there. And he's gonna be there until he's done eating." This man was so rude it put us off the whole restaurant. A few minutes later, he actually asked the man to move and sat us at the table (!) but grumbled about us to other employees and under his breath the whole time he did so. We had fond memories of The Mill from going to school in Gainesville, but this man almost caused us to leave without eating. Luckily, Ashley was our server, not Don. She redeemed The Mill and then some. She was sweet and attentive, and did a great job making sure we were happy campers. Give that girl a raise! We got a variety of muffins (orange juice, pumpkin, pistachio), which were all pretty good. We all ordered breakfast, and it was all a good value for the price. A word of warning: the hash browns were more like home fries, or just fried potato cubes. All in all, The Mill was a good breakfast, but I can't give more than 3 stars due to the way Don spoke to us.

The sandwiches my husband and I had were fantastic, (ruban and a club sandwich). The only reason I didn't give them five stars was the coleslaw and potato salad are not very good. The coleslaw is too "watery" and there is an herb or spice in the potato salad that we didn't like, not sure what it was. Other then that, the sandwiches were excellent.

As of October the bakery mill & deli got a new owner as the original owners retired so it's not the same as it was

I guess you can call this a mixed review. I've eaten here twice... and attempted to one other time - more on that ahead. The first time was for a weekday lunch, the second for a weekday breakfast. In both instances, the food and prices were pretty good and the service was fantastic. The third time, however, was for Sunday breakfast. We arrived at 9:30 and all the tables were understandably occupied. Of course, there are only 8 tables to begin with. So, strike 1: they should make more efficient use of their space. We walked in and no one greeted us. My wife walked in circles for a few moments before being informed by another patron that they don't take names, you just have to stand in line to wait for a table. Strike 2: poor greeting and communication. The line formed directly in front of the drink station so every time someone needed a soda/tea/coffee refill, the line had to part to allow a waitress or patron through. Strike 3: bad overall planning. We left without eating. So, all that said, I would absolutely go back... Just never on the weekend.

The two times we have tried to eat here, they have been so packed that we waited for a while and then left. They are very unorganized when it comes to seating. They only have 8 tables in the whole place, and when you walk in you are asked to "wait in line" for your table instead of being put on a wait list and have them call your name. Then, the line is from the counter to out the front door. Standing in front of the wait station with the drink machines is crowded and uncomfortable. It would be nice to at least have a bench to sit on outside while you wait. I heard the food was good, but I'm so frustrated with the experience that I may not even go back.

I came to The Mill for lunch last week with a few co-workers. This is the second time I've eaten here for lunch, and I've also had their muffins numerous times through work functions and such. The muffins - and from the other reviews, many breakfast items - seem to pull the biggest business. The orange juice muffin is unique and has a ton of flavor, although it's a bit too acidic for me as it takes me a long time to finish one. Then again, the sheer size of the muffin is probably also contributing to the time it takes to finish one of these things. Other muffin flavors are also thumbs up. I have had a basic club sandwich here in the past that I don't think I could have been any more indifferent to. It was edible and there wasn't anything specifically wrong with it, it was just incredibly average. On the most recent visit I got a pastrami on rye which was much better, and I didn't even think I was a big fan of rye. The sandwich wasn't huge but the density of the rye bread and the abundance of meat made it very filling. I also had potato salad as a side. It was obviously homemade but had sort of a strange spice to it that I couldn't place. I think I would just as soon have Publix potato salad. Ambience is pretty nonexistent and you are lucky to even find a table depending on when you come. Service has always been with a smile and the server seemed to remember past orders from my co-workers which is nice to see. I've never had bagels or dessert here but they were calling my name as I was waiting to pay on my way out. If I return here(I probably will) I think I'll focus more on the baked items since those seem to be the only outstanding aspect of the business.

I've eaten The Mill several times since my original review, but the revision is based on the very last visit we made, which was this past Sunday. I finally broke with tradition and ordered the Egg Salad Club sandwich. It's very impressive-looking--a triple decker with bacon on top, turkey and ham next, and a layer of egg salad last--but it tasted odd. The turkey and ham were pretty much what you'll find in any deli case and the egg salad was strangely flavored; too much relish, maybe? Whatever it was, it was off-putting. How do you screw up egg salad? Back to breakfast only for me.

Food was good, service good(just don't go on a Sunday). I was a little disappointed by the canned fruit.

Been here twice. First time I went during the middle of the day and got the Ruben Sandwich to go, which was average. The next time my wife and I went on a Sunday and they were very busy, which is not a big deal we expected to wait a little while for a table. We got there and were told to form a line for the next table, there were four empty tables that just needed to have the dirty plates from the previous customers removed, so we thought ok not too long of a wait. However all of the waitresses kept ignoring us and the other people waiting and were haphazardly serving people or talking to each other (even though we tried multiple times to get their attention). We waited almost 40 minutes with no help or even acknowledgement and just decided to leave. If you want to be ignored for 40 minutes waiting for a table to be cleaned off at a place that serves average food for ok prices, then this is the place for you.

The Mill used to be a huge location in the Oaks Mall Plaza a long time ago and they used to brew their own beer. Now, they are a tiny little place hidden in the plaza with TJ Maxx. I have tried their sandwiches and entrees, which are meh. The reason why I go here is for their muffins, which are super moist and delicious. I highly recommend the Cherry Vanilla muffins. They are great to pick up a half dozen for about a dollar each, way better than a half dozen donuts for breakfast at the office.

I love this place. Their bakery items are always good; my particular favorites are the Orange Juice muffins and the Cheese Danishes. They occasionally make special items, like Apple Cinnamon bread - if you're lucky enough to be there when it's available, don't hesitate to buy a loaf. I think it's more of a winter specialty though. They serve breakfast all day on the weekend - my sister loves their biscuits and gravy, and it's rather cheap, only a few dollars. The chicken salad sandwiches are always good if you're in the mood for lunch; it's pretty traditional, doesn't contain anything like grapes or nuts. This is one of the few places where the service is consistently good - this may be due to the space being small, but the servers are also very friendly. I've taken over 20 different friends here over the years, and everyone likes it.

went there today to stand in a line of 12 people, i was waiting to order a take out breakfast. some guy with dark hair who works there came pushing thru the line saying excuse me sorry for the crowd but its the weekend and we are always busy on weekends. he got to the coffe pot and procceded to pound on the pump to get coffee out and muttered something under his breath, the customer in front of me asked him if the coffe pump was broke and he said no its just empty and he procceeded to pound on it, I asked him if I could go around all these people who were waiting on a table so I can place my to go order and he said no this is like a regular resturant you have to wait. I couldnt understand that one so I asked the people in front of me if they were waiting for tables or waiting to order they said they were waiting for a table and told me to go around them to order. i get up to the counter to order and the cofee pot pounding guy asks me what I would like and I told him I would like to order a breakfast sandwitch but I want two so just doubel what ever Im about to order. and in a wise guy remark he says " Im smart I figured That". so I said nevermind with that attitude Ill just leave. I will never go back to that place again and will continue to tell friends about this expierince with someone who dosent know how to treat customers with respect. if your having a bad day then stay home.
