I get trays of Walt's fried chicken for family get togethers & everyone loves it. If you ask, they'll give you sides of wing & bbq sauces. The staff is really nice and always offers to carry the trays out to my car. Highly recommended.

Wow, Yelp reviewers were right on the mark with their great reviews regarding this restaurant. There was a small line when we arrived but it moved very quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful and allowed me to charge my phone for a while. Parking is limited on the residential street. The chicken is delicious and honestly some of the best I've ever had. It was juicy, moist and the seasoning was perfect with a spicy kick. I even enjoyed the tasty French fries that came with my chicken meal. I had the three piece and just knew I would have some chicken for later but that didn't happen because I was licking my fingers after my meal was done. LOL My goddaughter and I sat outside at their quaint eating area and feasted. However, this spot is more of a takeout spot. I met the manager who was very friendly and humbled when I told him how good the chicken was and about all the positive reviews online. This is definitely a spot I will keep bookmarked to return again when I'm in the area.

I found Walt's yesterday when looking up another soul food place in Reading Terminal Market in Philly, since someone said it's better than the place I looked up. As a fried chicken fiend, I was intrigued, and bookmarked it for a visit. Then, the brilliant idea of having chicken and waffles for brunch on New Year's Day occurred to me, so after calling to ensure that they were open, I paid a visit at around 10:45 this morning. The chicken was excellent, with the light, crisp coating and juicy, moist interior characteristic of well-fried chicken. It's definitely leaps and bounds above chain fast food fried chicken in quality, easily beating all other fried chicken I've tried in Northern DE. The waffle, however, was softer and less crispy than I would have liked. I ordered the wing and breast combo, which came with the aforementioned pieces of chicken plus a waffle and condiments (syrup and margarine). The flavors combined well, creating the sweet-savory harmony that is the hallmark of well-made chicken and waffles. It beats the famous chicken and waffle place I tried in Atlanta (Gladys Knight's), but doesn't quite meet the standard of my favorite place serving this dish in Pittsburgh (Meat and Potatoes). Nevertheless, it's quite good for the area in which it's located. In addition to the chicken and waffles, I ordered a sweet potato pie. Its flavor was appropriately sweet and well seasoned, but the bottom was a bit soggier than I would have liked. I noticed that the label of the bean pie said "Universal Baking Co." (the sweet potato pie's label didn't), leading me to believe that the desserts aren't made on site. While I didn't try any of the side dishes, I wonder if this may also be the case with them, based on other reviewers' comments. Black beans were for sale today due to it being New Year's, but I didn't notice this until I'd already ordered (not sure if they're offered regularly as a side). Overall, I was pleased with the quality of the food that I received from Walt's, and would definitely return for the fried chicken, and perhaps to try some of the sides. The prices are also very reasonable (the chicken and waffles was $5.85 and the sweet potato pie was $2.95), which is always a plus. As others have mentioned, it's take-out only, so plan to take your food home or elsewhere to consume it. Bon appetit!

Awesome fried chicken. I didn't care much for the spicy rice or the mashed potatoes. The French fries were great but definitely the chicken was AWESOME.

While the fried chicken was really really good I found the sides to be somewhat bland and also cold. I think I would come here for the chicken but make my own side dishes at home.

What can I say? Walts is yummy. I would suggest cutting back on the salt. There have been times when I felt it was almost inedible due to the sodium content. So...cut back on the salt and the chicken is perfection.

Walts is such a tradition. Talk to any Delawarean and they will say its a must. The only reason you come here is for some really good fried chicken that is unquestionably made with love. Lunch or dinner come ready to eat and love life.

Give it up for Walt's. In Wilmington, Walt's has maintained beautifully for 30 plus years. Even if out-of-the-way avoid the chains for convenience sake. As with everywhere else in Wilmington, you'll need to watch -

Walt's is one of the few food institutions in Wilmington. It has literally been around for decades. The original store closed a few years ago. I'm glad that they still sell their mouth watering chicken at this location. The parking can be tricky and the surroundings can be a little intimidating to people not use to the area. This location is small and is take-out only. I usually order the breast special, which comes with a breast, wing, and French fries. The chicken is fried golden brown and is delicious. The chicken is always moist. The skin has a great crunch and flavor. I can't walk out of Walt's without getting a bean pie. Now a bean pie might sound crazy, but trust me, it tastes great. If you like sweet potato pie, you will like the bean pie. The side dishes are traditional soul food items. I haven't tried any of the side dishes. Thus, I can't recommend if they are worth trying or not. The service is fast and friendly. If you are in the area and your craving some fried chicken, do yourself a favor and stop by Walt's.

Believe all the reviews this chicken is fantastic the flavor is phenomenal and it's nice and moist! Definitely worth the drive! Don't forget to try one of the pies you won't be disappointed!

Believe the reviews here. The chicken here is worth the drive. The parking here is nothing short of inconvenient, and I'll still suggest this fried bird to anyone. I can't cosign the sides since I didn't try anything else. But the chicken served here is crispy on the outside, hot and moist on the inside. I attempted to wait til I got home to eat it, but that was a failure in the making from the time that I handed the young lady the money.

The chicken is bangin'. Decent price, and good. The sides, well, it depends on what you get. I don't get the mac & cheese b/c I like mine baked and I don't know if they do that. The greens are good, the beans and rice, and fries are good. Don't forget the bbq sauce.

So I tired the chicken and waffle. It was pretty good! I just wish it came with more food. The chicken once again very moist and crispy. The waffle was yummy as well nothing special just a regular waffle. Still yummy. The meal was 5.60 for half a waffle and two pieces of chicken. I got the white pieces that brought a breast and wing. Yum! The meal brought butter and maple syrup. The downside for me would be that once again my meal wasn't hot. I like my food hot so for me that was a turn off. Overall I enjoyed my chicken and waffle and I do recommend getting this meal. Also having to take the food to go and eating it at home might be why it's never steaming hot. But since this place has nowhere to dine in that's the only option. Anyway I will return for more of their chicken and waffle and I guess eat in the car so it'll be nice and hot!

This is the best fried chicken I have ever had. I dream about the chicken. It's even great a few days later as leftovers. The macaroni salad is clearly homemade. Get the large. I recently moved to Wilmington and have heard about this place for years. I'm glad I made the trip and I will be going back very often.

Fried chicken was good. We tried the mash potatoes, collard greens and green beans; all from cans/boxes, bland and toss aways at best.

Do yourself a favor and forget about the chain restaurants for fried chicken. I stopped going to those places once I found this place. Their fried chicken is very yummy! Mashed potatoes not so much - they are very bland and so is the gravy but the fried chicken is very tasty and not as greasy as the other places!

    (4)
  • Kim B.

So good! Best fried chicken I've ever had. The mac and cheese was good also. The mashed potatoes and gravy wasn't that great but I didn't care because the chicken was so good.

Chicken was so good! Nice golden crisp and crunchy. Sides were stellar too. Had the collard greens and butter rice. I will definitely go back on my next visit.

  • M S.

The location and feel of the joint feels a bit ghetto. (is that okay to say?) But don't let let that deter you from getting some decent food from here. It has all of the appeal of a payday check cashing business but the chicken is decent. I'll be back.

The parking can be a little tricky since it is in a residential area, the space is a little cramped, but the best chicken you will find outside of your own kitchen. I also like the potato salad and greens beans

The best fried chicken! Try their sides! Collard greens, Mac and Cheese, ... They even have mini pies and bread pudding for dessert.

Amazing fried chicken. Call ahead when possible, and take it with you. Sides are delicious, biscuits are good, and the desserts are great as well. I do a Walt's lunch for my homeroom every year to celebrate the end of the year and it is a huge fave for the students - they LOVE it. Great staff as well. You can't get better fried chicken then this in Delaware or PA, that's for sure.

Pretty good fried chicken, but could have been a bit more crispy on the outside. Flavorful, not too greasy and cooked all the way through (which is always a plus!). Greens tasted straight out the can, but mac and cheese was good and cheesy. Sweet potato pie was really good, but the banana pudding was by far the best of the two (but it was close!). They also had a very good selection of desserts, accept credit cards and have parking (but i just pulled up in front on the street). Overall, I would recommend the food, minus the greens, and will def be back again.

There really is no place to sit. And ambience is not it's high point. But this is by far the BEST fried chicken in Delaware. A brown paper of bag of 10 pieces of their fried dark chicken; sauce; plenty of napkins, a car with directions to Brandywine Park and you are minutes away from the best picnic ever.

Delicious delicious chicken!! My favorite :) Highly recommend the potato salad. Don't recommend the coleslaw. Biscuits were average. Order ahead cause they fry it fresh.

Best fried chicken in Wilmington! Once you have Walt's you will not be returning to KFC or Popeye's anytime soon. Their skin is crispy, has the right spices and the meat is always tender and flavorful. The little rolls that come with the meal are so simple yet the perfect addition. Not a big fan of the gravy for the mashed potatoes but the greens, Mac & cheese and other sides are banging.
