Visited Hunter's Den in Wilminton last Sunday after walking around Wintertur. It was Easter, so we caught the tail end of their buffet. It is an old-school country-club styled restaurant with fairly dark but spacious dining rooms. The beer selection was pretty narrow, mostly domestic light beers (hunter crowd, I guess), plus Yuengling and (thankfully) Dogfishhead 60 minute IPA. The food was alright, yet very inconsistent. Some hits and misses. It was a buffet that day, so I understand that is how it goes. The clam chowder was bland and uninspired, but the crab soup was excellent. I really liked the smoky tomato base - super flavorful and a very nice surprise! The spiced roasted red potatoes were awesome as well, but the cheesy potato "gratin" was fake processed cheese (again, bland and uninspired). The pork in pear sauce was dry and too sweet. Glazed ham was sweet and tasty. The fish options were all nice: catch of the day in a lobster sauce gets a thumbs up. As does the salmon and the seafood imperial. On to dessert. My girlfriend and I tried 3 cakes offered: carrot, Black Forrest, and German chocolate. I thought carrot cake was lovely, great nuts and carrot and spice flavors. Cream cheese frosting was good too. The German Chocolate was pretty good (3/5), but it is really hard to live up to my mom's! Avoid the Black Forrest - it was sweet and bland. Service was good. Attentive and cheery. One thing I would suggest to management is that when the customer goes up for another plate, leave something for the dirty flatware to sit on instead of setting them directly on the table. Better yet, take them away and bring new flatware. I also happened to have a couple lemon seeds in my beer glass. Not sure how they got there but, the server promptly replaced the beer, no questions asked. If I go again, I'll have to try the prime rib. I saw someone order it and hoped it was in the buffet. All in all, our visit was pleasant. My girlfriend liked it a lot and would probably give more stars, but to me, it was just OK.

Prime rib is awesome. Staff very friendly and helpful. Older crowd and decor, but clean and good food. Will come back again.

After 23 years of coming here its still the same consistent flavor. Portions are good and the staff is always great!

Went to Hunters Den for lunch today. It was disappointing. Service was good. The food does not justify the prices. The crab cake sandwich was very small for the $13 price. The chicken sandwich was a tender on a roll . The roll was too big for the piece of chicken. The chicken was tasteless and tough. The waitress did comp it. Not good to go to lunch and not be able to eat it. The quality of the food should match the price. Not very busy for a Friday. Have enjoyed in the past but seems to have declined.

My family bought the Wilmington & Western Railroad dinner special. Train trip was great. But the dinner at Hunters Den was exceptionally disappointing. There may have been a staff scheduling snafu (going for the benefit of the doubt here) cause it took well over an hour to get even so much as our dinner salad. So we had 30 very disgruntled tour people. Food was okay but not worth a specific trip to the restaurant.

Just read other reviews. Yes the staff is friendly but extremely apologetic. The hostess at the podium was loudly chiding us to call our friends and family because business was so bad. My husband and I ordered the special- mesquite prime rib for 12.95. That right there should have made me choose something else. THEN our server told us that it would be cooked somewhere between medium well and well done. What! We don't have a choice? I told my husband that the meat must already be cooked so she can't guarantee how it will be cooked. Then dinner was served. The prime rib I've had in my life were thick pieces of meat- this was about 1/2 inch thick. Thinner than a London Broil!!! It was like they took a prime rib and sliced it into 3 or 4 pieces - like they were doing anything possible to cut corners.my husband and I kept joking that this was probably the last week they would be open. The decor is dark and dated. Staff was friendly. The place must seat 150-200 and there were only 4 tables taken at 6:00 pm. Very sad place.

The Hunters Den has been around for a long time. They are known for their prime rib, and if you come for dinner, you must have it. They also have an excellent breakfast and brunch on Sundays. This is by far one of the best places for breakfast in the area. On holidays, they have a buffet, which has a huge selection, including seafood. The best thing about Sunday breakfast here, is that you are not rushed out the door, like at some places, such as Perkins and Crossroads. You are able to sip your bloody Mary (which are excellent) and talk leisurely. Next time you are looking for Sunday breakfast, keep them in mind.

I was excited to go to the hunters den hearing that their speciality was prime rib which is one of my favorites. We went on a Saturday night About two weeks ago at 930pm. When we arrived It took about 15 minutes to get someone's attention, this was surprising as while the bar was crowded the restaurant was quite empty. When we were finally seated the server was quite snarky and did not make us comfortable. The servers attitude was better later in the service so I'll chalk it up to a bad night. We each ordered the prime rib medium rare. Mine was quite dry and tasteless, my girlfriends was much better. The food was inconsistent. The baked potatoes were hard and obviously reheated from several hours earlier. In conclusion both the food and the service was inconsistent. The atmosphere was loud and distracting, in fact they had a singer there that was so bad that I had to take an aspirin. No it was not karaoke.

Had the Opportunity to stop by "The Hunters Den" for lunch. A couple of friends of mine had been mentioning this place for over a year now. Well known locally for their entertainment and dancing, the Hunters Den consists mostly of Very Friendly Locals. The decor is American Pub, not Too Dark, and gives you a homey feel as well as the dining area. The Bar Staff was extremely friendly and happy to give you their opinions on the days specials. My date went with the Lunch portion of Meatloaf and Mashed Potato's. I had the Tilapia Fish N Chips. They were served with Steak Fries, which WERE CRISPY! The Patrons were jovial and very Friendly. I need to stop back for Dinner and Dancing. As for Lunch, I would stop again!

Hunters Den is a nice gem in Delaware with a lot of history behind it. The atmosphere is really nice with all the hunting paintings and decorations. I always enjoy going to eat at Hunters Den. Food can be hit or miss though sometimes, the crab dip appetizer is excellent and filling, I love the cheese and crackers-you can buy the cheese spread. Some meals I have got at Hunters Den were very good but some are just avg. The wild game specials are always good and the duck is good, steaks are decent to just okay, salmon is decent, I got a chicken meal with a crab sauce that was very good, I remember a Seafood Pasta Dish I used to get with shrimp, crab, and scallops that was really good but I forgot the name of it. Ordering a couple appetizers can be a very satisfying meal and may be the safest bet if you are just stopping in.

I took my BF here for his birthday. It was a first for both of us. He loves prime rib and I heard they have some of the best around. Upon entering, you are greeted by this awesome smelling aroma and a black board listing the daily specials. A stuffed Maine Lobster for only $25 was one of the specials for this particular day. For being a Friday, there was no wait to be seated. We were seated in the back, close to the bar, in a cozy room. Our server, Celeste, greeted us almost instantly. She was extremely friendly and chipper. Since this was our first time at this establishment, we had questions regarding the menu. She was very knowledgable and answered all of our questions. He decided to get the 10oz prime rib, side of crab imperial, spinach salad, and mashed potatoes. I got the chicken chesapeake, spinach salad, and mashed potatoes. While waiting for our main entrees, we chowed down on awesome, soft bread and our salads. We barely had time to finish our salads before our entrees came. I was shocked at how fast the food arrived. Everything was cooked to perfections; the prime rib, melts is your mouth, nice, juice and pink, the chicken chesapeake was phenomenal, they were not shy on the crab imperial, and the gravy to the mashed potatoes tasted like it was cooked with au ju-AMAZING! Celeste was one of the best servers I have ever encountered. She definitely deserves to be recognized for her incredible work. We never once had to request a refill, and she kept the bread coming. She wanted to make sure we left happy customers and she succeeded. I was so pleased that she made my bf's birthday that much more special. I would give 5 stars just based off of service alone, but we went back the following week. We requested Celeste but unfortantely she was off. Our server was not as nice, she told us a half-dozen times or so she worked a double, so she was basically apologizing in advance for rotten service. BF got the prime rib again with a side of shrimp and spinach salad. Prime rib came out and had the biggest piece of fat running down the entire middle of the piece of meat, and it was cooked well down. He was getting so frustrated because he could not even cut it. She also forgot to ring in the shrimp, so we had to wait 15 minutes for those. She also forgot to bring his salad dressing. He ended up sending back his entree for the chicken chesapeake, and I felt bad for eating infront of him, so I waited and ended up eating cold crab cakes by the time his food came. We had to wait forever for refills and even longer for the check. I won't fault the restaurant because clearly the server was having an off day. I will for sure be back, only on days Celeste is working though! I will call in advance just to ask for her. I'm looking forward to trying their seafood buffet they have on Thurdays. I heard they are pretty awesome.

My uncle used to live in DE, and recommended this place to us. I would have never even known it existed, but I'm so glad I do!!! The food was absolutely divine and SO reasonably priced. I got the prime rib, and it melted in my mouth. It was cooked to perfection, and was $12.95!!!!!! Delicious. I also got the cajun chicken soup...it was SO good, I've never tasted anything like it, so spicy, just the way I like it. Our waitress was so friendly. Service was great. I told her I was new in town, and she told me so much about the area, gave me ideas on things to do. Absolutely love this place, and can't wait to go back !

My family came here for Easter dinner based on a previous review. We had five adults and one child. The adults and the child got the buffet which had mixed reviews but the desserts received all thumbs up. The other two ordered the prime rib and it was delicious. We had a table discussion and agreed we'd come again while also recommending to friends.
