I have had the food here once, but to be honest it was entirely forgettable. They do have the chicken Nixon, that I love, from Dead Presidents. Unfortunately, not even an old favorite is enough to raise the rating of this place. Other reviewers have commented on the strange vibe in this place. There is no question, this place is strange. I believe the aura everyone is feeling at this bar is desperation. It is a little sad. I think these people actually believe they are on the cutting edge of cool, but it comes off all wrong.

Maybe it's me. Maybe it's me and my postpartum figure and not feeling so sexy and not really into getting SO WASTED. Maybe it's that I didn't know anyone, besides my husband and our brothers. But dude, I didn't like the vibe down at this place. It was kinda meat-markety, and the dudes were kinda leery (even at my post partum figure, hey now!). It's just MEH. I guess I'll go back, if someone makes me. I suppose it would be fun if we had a table and were getting food and stuff. It was just MEH.

Paupers rarely disappoints, with good -often excellent - food, friendly atmosphere, helpful and efficient bar staff. The place is busy now, given the beach season is over but everyone works to make it work! We like it and have become regulars.

I've really really really tried to like this place. Really, I have. But the service sucks, the food is boring, and the atmosphere is strange- the Hockessin bar crowd consists mainly of cougars and upper middle class 50 year old white dudes who think they're attractive to girls in their twenties but remind us more of our parent's friends. Have been here several times in the past several years and am realizing now that we end up there if we're in the area as there aren't too many choices out there...

Decent place to go and chill but if your under 30 beware of cougars and Tunas. Also a bit over priced.

I have to say we were pleasantly surprised based on other Yelp reviews. We live in the area and pass this place all of the time and decided to take a chance and stop in for lunch one day. We were quickly sat and our server came over immediately to take a drink order. We ordered Caesar salads to start as we do EVERYWHERE we go practically. My fiance ordered the lobster risotto special and I ordered boring old buffalo chicken fingers. Salads were brought out in a timely fashion. Their dressing is oil based versus a creamy and was really good. I especially liked the croutons. Our food did seem to take a bit long to get, but not unreasonable I guess. I was surprised to find that my chicken fingers were not the frozen, flat, formed tenders I was expecting, but were actual pieces of boneless chicken that had been battered, fried and coated in sauce. They could have used some more sauce, but were still pretty good. My fiance enjoyed the taste of his risotto, but unfortunately if was cold in the middle. Since he is one of those people that worry the kitchen staff will spit in his food if he sends it back he didn't. All in all the experience was good enough for us to give it another try. The service was great and that is half the battle sometimes!

I do not go here for food any more. I thought the bar was decent in the past. I went here for a draft beer and for $6 I would expect the bartender to use a chilled mug since they do not keep the kegs chilled. I really do not think it is asking for too much to either get cold beer or at least a cold mug, especially when there are no other customers at the bar. I have cold bottles in my fridge and will not bother going here to get a beer on draft. I expect more from a fancy place with a nice bar and classy customers.

Ass this place sucks. Been here a few times over he last several years & every time service has been understaffed & SLOOOW. The food is mediocre at best & the beer selection blows ass. Next time I'm eating at the Shell station. Boo

This place is alright, but nothing special. I would go in if you are in the area, but honestly would prefer wawa across the street.

I went here tonight for dinner with my mom. The place was clean and we were seated promptly. The hostess was pleasant. My mom ordered the lobster crab cake entree and I had their Alamo Spring Roll (southwestern spiced slow cooked chicken with sweet corn, black beans & cheddar cheese. Egg roll wrapped and lightly fried. Served with avocado cream sauce) app. My mom enjoyed her food. As for my dish, the best thing about it was the avocado cream sauce. And as for being "lightly fried" it was a little more than that. The roll was cut into a couple different pieces, it looked pretty and was easy to hold. But a bite without the sauce wasn't really good and I asked for a side of the sauce to finish the roll. It was filled with more of the other ingredients than chicken. I was interested in other items on the menu, I just wasn't really hungry at the time. Our waiter Fran, was nice and was accurate with our order. Although I was a little disappointed. I told him, as well as the hostess that it was our first time there and, I don't know, some places when you tell them that it's your 1st time at their restaurant, sometimes they do things to make your visit memorable and want to come back. But again, it seems like most of the restaurants in Hockessin you have to drink to enjoy your meal (based on a lot of their reviews.) I think food should be good on its own merit. With that said, I would at least try this place again.

Six Paupers, I liked the idea of it more than I actually liked it. The service was slow, uninspired, and lacking an overall sense of enjoyment in life in general. We were there on a Sunday evening and I ordered the Mahi Mahi dish which was a monstrous mistake, my nephew's frozen chicken nuggets and McCain smiley fries looked more appetizing than this meal was. The potato cakes were obviously reheated from a previous day as they were dry and limp, and I've had much better Mahi Mahi at a chain restaurant. I couldn't finish my meal. I really wanted to like it here. It can be difficult to find a good place to eat that is not of the chain variety and I am always looking to add a new place to my list of suggested go-to's this one will get nowhere near that list. I guess I should not have been surprised, I did feel like a pauper eating there, just not of the quaint and nostalgic kind that gets to enjoy good food, atmosphere, and mead, but rather the kind that scampers behind the pubs angling for scraps.

Sunday brunch. Weak beer selection-wheats mostly on tap. Eggs benedict and a dogfish 60. Beer was warmish. Eggs slightly over poached. Muffin basically untoasted. Hollandaise waaay too lemony but good consistency. Served with some potato hockey puck thing - dry as hell. I was hungry and it wasnt horrible but ill stuck to the burgers. As usual, service was indifferent. Pleasantish but indifferent. Seems to be the theme here most of the time. Shame, cuz this could be a cool place to hang out for more than one beer, but its just not wrlcoming enough to make me want to stay.

We were in the area three weeks ago and decided to stop in for drinks and an appetizer. Big mistake. Even though we were seated promptly, our waiter didn't arrive with water for 22 minutes. It took nearly as long to get our first drink, so we immediately ordered our second (is that their strategy?). The crab nachos had 7 pieces of crab on them (yes, we counted), and were cold like they'd been sitting for a while. The bar area was extremely busy, they were terribly understaffed. We couldn't carry on a conversation because of the noise level. Wouldn't recommend it.

It was fine. Not great. Not bad. Just fine. The bar area seemed a little better and the dining area and patio leave something to be desired. It seems their attempt was going for swank but some of the decor just says Chilis, or Dennys, or, something else that is diner like. If they are going to rent out a space that large they need to figure a way to tie the restaurant together with the decor so you don't feel like you're eating in an airport hangar. The food is a step up from Chilis (last time I had it was in an airport and it was pretty gross), but nothing special. The Cheescake Factory does a version of the Alamo Spring Roll (where Six Paupers probably got the idea), but there's is really good where 6P's was...okay. A lot of restaurants in the area you have legit chefs in the kitchen cranking out great and interesting food, where I felt 6P was one of those places where they have $10/hr cooks that they overwork and whose last job was working a leaf blower. For one thing, spring rolls are typically boiled not fried. And when you do fry something in spring roll paper, it's supposed to be light, like a pot sticker, not deep fried like an egg roll, otherwise, what's the difference? These were basically egg rolls and they were a bit overdone even for egg rolls, which made the bean mixture inside kind of dry. Pretty much, you needed the sauce on it otherwise it tasted dried out and overcooked. The Chicken Nixon was okay for a sandwich but the bun had no flavor, which, considering that's half the sandwich, cheaping out on the bun is a sign of someone cutting corners to save nickels over the value of flavor. If I can get a delicious brioche bun, which is like the Cadillac of buns at Buckley's Tavern for around the same price, why would I opt for a flavorless white bun? As my brother, the chef, said, "If they can't afford the little things they can't afford to stay in business." If they simply would have put it on a decent whole wheat bun for a few cents extra, it actually would have been a pretty good sandwich. A little overly smokey but it had decent flavor in the middle. The staff was nice enough but no real charm, which, again, made me feel like I was at Chili's rather than in Hockessin where my dining experiences have tended to be pleasurable. I mean, even the guy at the Wawa gave us high fives which was more inspired service than we got at 6P. And with the mediocre app and sandwich I can't imagine getting an entree here since I can get a really great meal and atmosphere for the same price at The House of William and Merry or the Back Burner, or drive a little ways to Krazy Kat's. And if I wanted a sandwich I would be better off going to Lettie's Kitchen, Capriotti's, or drive a little further to Buckley's Tavern. Seriously, their burger and French dip are probably the best I've ever had. Plus, great atmosphere. There are just too many great places to go in the area or close by to throw away money on a mediocre experience at Six Pauper's Tavern.

I agree completely with the previous reviewer who wrote that this place is decent for a casual meal, but their "good" food is completely unmemorable. Nothing really stands out on the menu, the service is forgetful and average. The prices are average for what you get. The only thing I used to really love was the firecracker shrimp, but the last time I got it, it was downright bland compared to the spice it had before. The chicken Nixon was downright disgusting. The turkey Ruben made me sick once. I guess the only reason we still go on occasion is because it is a quick and easy lunch to take our two young and messy kids to where we don't feel too awful about the commotion and mess they make. Definitely not worth making a special trip for, but if you are in the area, it beats pizza or fast food .

Good evening spent here. Never heard of this place and went there at the last minute to meet a good friend for dinner and drinks. The atmosphere is very appealing- very open and large bar area with a few communal tables. Large dining room area, too. Good, pub style menu. Happy with all apps we ordered (beef eggrolls, crab and artichoke dip, calamari). Good beer selection, attentive waitress (who quickly cleaned up a pint of beer that spilled on our table w/i 10 minutes of arriving). CLEAN bathroom. If I lived around there, I would definitely give this place another shot.

My sister and I took our mom out here for a low-key, but still nice, Mother's Day dinner. When we walked in there were only a few tables occupied by other guests and plenty of staff on for the amount of guests in the restaurant. The interior and the atmosphere inside was very nice and comfortable. So we were seated right away at a nice booth and after a few minutes our server came over to ask us for our drinks. For the meal, we ordered two appetizers, the tuna bites and one of their flat breads. both were very good and everyone was pleased. Our entrees were all delicious as well, but nothing extremely outstanding. We each got a dessert and either coffee or tea at the end of the meal. Overall, we really enjoyed all of our food, even had to box some up and take it home because we were so stuffed. However, the service there was a little annoying. We had a waitress, I wish I remembered her name, but she seemed like she was in a rush the entire time even though she only had three or four tables. Each time she flitted by our table it was only for a few seconds and she spoke a mile a minute. That threw off our whole vibe at dinner to the point where, at times, she would walk away and we were all sitting there with a confused look on our face and we had to digest what we just heard. The girl seemed very nice, she just seemed frazzled all the time. I was surprised she didn't make any mistakes at the pace she was going. But, again, overall it was a nice meal, and the three of us eventually just started to tune out our waitress and enjoy our own company. Oh, I forgot one odd thing that we encountered. Two of the entrees that my mom ordered were out of stock. One of which was a special, which is understandable because there is only limited supply of special dishes. The other, however, was the lobster lasagna, which was a regular menu entree. This struck me as extremely off because if there is an entree on your regular menu, you should always have plenty of it and the kitchen should always be prepared for anyone to order any entree off of their regular menu.

A decent resto-pub for the suburbs. Opened by the former owners of the much cooler Dead Presidents Pub in downtown Wilmington, Six Paupers is located on the main thoroughfare that runs through the 'village' of Hockessin. The inside is beautiful, warm with dark mahogany wood paneling, etched glass and the centerpiece: a massive oval bar with ample seating. The dining room and outdoor patio is almost an afterthought. Menu is your standard attempt at modern gastropub dining with inventive appetizers (ahi tuna bites, crab nachos) and standard main course fare (N.Y. strip, chicken, Mushroom ravioli) The kitchen can be hit or miss - nothing I've ever eaten here has been memorable, but it is a safe bet for a casual lunch or dinner if you're in the area. Otherwise, this place is ripe for the drinking. Service is affable, quick, friendly and ready to serve your poison of choice, along with a sizeable beer and drink menu from which to choose from.

Most of the food is pretty good pub grub. Drinks are overpriced, especially for these days.

Pretty mediocre food and overpriced for what you get. Not that there are many fine dining establishments in Hockessin. And the crowds a weird mix of a meat market crowd at the bar and families with one to many children trying to get what they figure is upscale cuisine in the restarant. I think I'll pass...twice!

We have been here a few times. The beer list is decent. They have an ok selection on draft and by bottle. It always seems to be crowded in the bar for happy hour. On our last visit, we split the crab nachos. They seemed to have a little less crab this time, but the portion was good and the flavors are nice. We split the fish and chips. We figured it would be enough for two.....think again. Only two strips of fish, literally 6 fries and two tiny stacks of coleslaw. Pretty pathetic proportion. The food had good taste though. Also, as a gripe, they have had the ahi tuna burger on the menu for a while even though they don't offer it anymore. Print new menus please!!

Stopped by for lunch on a sunny Sunday and sat outside. I had the Reuben and GF had the pulled pork. The pork was flavorful and tender with out being gloppy with sauce. The corned beef on the Reuben was tender, and it had a schmear of dressing, not dripping in sauce. Its not a gastro pub, but the prices and quality of the offerings certainly make a worthwhile stop. I'll go back.

Bad food, bad service. There are lots of great restaurants in the area, this is not one of them.

I've always enjoyed coming here for lunch or dinner when I'm in town to visit my parents. The late-night drinking crowd is a bit of a different story, but overall the service is impeccable. We had our rehearsal dinner here as well for our wedding several years ago and Steve was just simply amazing at making our event perfect for us.
