Cute coffee shop with excellent seating both inside and outside. And most importantly, they have GREAT espresso drinks. I had a latte that was pretty great. The service was excellent and the shop was clean. There were many people working on laptops inside and more people chatting outside. If you are in the area, this is a great option for an excellent coffee.

What made me give this place two stars was I didn't feel welcomed whatsoever. The cashier/barista seemed uninterested in my patronage. I ordered a peppermint mocha, a drip and a hazelnut latte. Well i ended up with two hazelnut lattes and a drip. I did purchase a day old cinnamon roll which had almonds in the spirals and was heavenly and a day old chocolate chip scone which was alright.. The white chocolate raspberry did not disappoint, was very good. If I return to Louisville I'll give them another shot, but until then I'm slightly disappointed that the barista didn't make my drink correctly and that I didn't feel welcomed.

Just moved to Louisville from Los Angeles, so we're slowly hitting all the local spots to check them out. What a fun little place in downtown Louisville! Quaint atmosphere, friendly service. We tried some sweet treats and some coffee, wonderful. I'm sure we will be back. I see they serve breakfast too, maybe I'll check that out next time.

Bad food and snobby service. They could have cared less about us and have extremely poor customer service. Unfortunate since we live a couple blocks away. Outside seating is a nice place to hang out but not well kept. Dishes and utensils were dirty.

I was excited when I saw other Yelpers mention the gluten free pastries. All I saw were pastries I could buy at Whole Foods--nothing fresh or homemade. Bottom Line: *Decor is nice and atmosphere is cozy *Water glass came with lip marks *Hair found in my eggs *Service was friendly I would go back despite the dirty glass and hair but I probably would stick to getting drinks in paper cups.

Bittersweet is THE BEST cafe in the area. The food is fresh and never disappoints. They roast their own coffee and I'll never go to Starbucks again. The dessert and pastries are amazing and I've hired them to cater my wedding. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is adorable. This is THE place to go!

Cute place on Main Street with a big patio area for outdoor seating, very pleasant for breakfast. Pretty large selection of pastries and a fairly extensive menu. Service was friendly and quick. The lox bagel was good--had a generous amount of lox. Will definitely be back!

The place is centrally located in downtown Louisville and has a potential of being a great coffee shop. However, so many things are bad with this place: 1- Not only there is no functional ventilation system but also there is a reverse ventilation system there: When a person orders a sandwich or something, you would think you are sitting inside the microwave or the sandwich maker, the whole place would smell like burned oil! 2- There is no AC in place! If outside is warm, inside is like sauna, even if outside is not warm (such as very same moment that I am writing this review), the inside is just super hot! 3- The internet is terrible, it just doesn't hold up. I would suggest that the owners spend some money on improving the conditions of the coffee shop, the place has a great potential.

I realize I need to update my previous review. I have been to bittersweet multiple times since (I love the patio and it's a convenient location for me) and service has seriously improved. I also had breakfast (they have various sandwiches) at bittersweet and it was good.

I was elated when I found Bittersweet because it sold sandwiches (for a picnic hike) and was open early. Ordered three different sandwiches. Before I could say anything to the person who took my order she was gone and returned with containers that had sides of potato chips. Both the shop and online menus stated that a choice of house salad or potato salad came with sandwiches. I was never asked nor was I given a chance to request my choice. When I pointed out the oversight I was brusquely handed ONE six-ounce container of salad. I also discovered too late that two sandwiches were identical. Chicken on on them was old and tough. Tasted and smelled like bologna. On a salad order, the dressing was the consistency of gluey super thick maple syrup . . . inedible in my opinion. On the bright side, Bittersweet's carryout containers were cardboard (not styrofoam) and they open at SIX.

There are just too many other, cleaner coffee shops to give Bittersweet a higher rating.

Great coffee shop. I have only been in for grab and go coffee, so I can not comment on experience further than this. Even my to-go cup of coffee had a fancy design frothed on top. Great environment and great location.

Arrived at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. It was busy but not crazy. My first impression was from the rude order taker (guy with tattoos and small bun) who was argumentative and disrespectful. I asked if the cafe au lait was made from chicory coffee. His look and attitude was condescending. I said "like Café Du Monde in New Orleans" to which he replied he lived in New Orleans and didn't know about chicory coffee. How can you live somewhere and not know of a signature item? He then felt the need to translate what café au lait meant. He also argued with me which pasty was which even though it was mislabeled in the window and was incorrect. When we got to our table we discovered the cinnamon roll we had ordered appeared to have been made over a week ago as it was dry and hard. By now, the crowd had gathered and it wasn't worth the hassle of returning the cinnamon roll or dealing with mr. rude so we dumped it in the trash. Well, the mocha latte was good. From now on I'll walk down the street to Moxie.

I love Bittersweet. Great service and friendly staff. Their coffee is great too. Update: They have awesome gluten free options too, this place just gets more amazing!

Cozy place! Great Bhakti Chai, super friendly staff. Loved the old building feel. Great place to study, read or meet a friend. Food smelled delicious & treats looked amazing. Will definitely be back!!

  • Nichelle G.

This café is the absolute best. Even if you don't live nearby you should check it out to study at to meet up for coffee dates and more. Their coffee is delicious, but on top of that they have awesome sandwiches and breakfast burritos. But that's not all they have so much more to eat and they make everything homemade in on the spot. No packaged sandwiches and no package to breakfast burritos. There is a great patio to sit out on when it's nice and plenty of seating inside to meet up with friends.

The coffee at bittersweet is really good and the food is pretty decent as well but the service is terrible. I always feel like the staff is annoyed by customers, and after my last experience (this morning) when the Barista was rude and condescending to me I will never be returning again!

  • Steve V.

Great location, great live music, nice surroundings. Coffee - Good ( I don't get fancy drinks only coffee and it's good) Food - Good Service - Poor - rude, don't seem to like people, long wait for food and in line. They need some serious customer service training better staffing during rushes.

  • Colleen K.

I love to come here for coffee or tea inside or outdoors and sometimes grab a bite to eat. This place gets crowded and therefore it is sometimes challenging to find a seat. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and a beautiful patio. On some nights they have live bands on the shared patio- an all around good place. The tea selection could be improved.

I like the rustic wood vibe and it always smells great in here. The drip coffee is nice - I like the bold one the most. Also, they are one of the few places around that carry a variety of "milk". They have: dairy, soy, almond, coconut, and rice (for a few cents extra but not much). It is so refreshing to see that people carry these options! I personally love the hot cocoa (cocoa steamer) made with almond milk. LOVE it. Thanks for the dairy options and friendly staff! Nice place! It is quite busy on the weekends, but if you wait a few minutes, you can easily snag a table.

  • Lee D.

Coffee is good, espresso drinks are also very well made. Often crowded, but that's what you would expect for a shop that has good business. I love the small home town feel of this place.

Coffee was alright but the scone was easily the hardest I've ever had. I mean, it was as hard as biscotti. I took a video to show just how bad it was youtu.be/wmzvW_stjjs

I first encountered Bittersweet almost two years ago. I was instantly taken in by their atmosphere and soundtrack: their coffee and treats only sweetened the deal! I've found that the more you go, the nicer they get--the staff are ever-friendly and often eager to make friends. Much later, I'm a regular and they have expanded to host live music on a beautiful patio and serve food as well as drinks! I love their nightlife, they are one of the best late-night coffee shops in Boulder County. Be sure not to miss their delicious GF desserts (I do love a shop that panders to my dietary needs!) All in all, there's absolutely no reason not to frequent Bittersweet, especially if you are within its general vicinity!

We were in town getting some work done on my tattoo, and stopped here while we were waiting for our appointment. This was our first time in the area, and we liked the way it was laid out (except for the parking situation). The outside of the place is what enticed us into going inside. It looked like a cute little place, the way it was set up, and we decided to get a couple coffees to hold us over until dinner. The person at the front desk was very friendly and sweet. I got my typical iced mocha and my husband chose the same this time, and when the barista asked which type of milk we wanted, I guess he wanted to be Hip and got his with rice milk (there were quite a few different options). We got a dessert, some chocolate truffle deal, and a cookie to share, which was more than we intended on getting but they just looked so yummy. 2 iced mochas, a big chocolate chip cookie, and the truffle cake thing to share, came out to about 15$ (can't remember exactly, but it was what I was expecting it to be- so not too expensive). Instead of a cash register, they have an ipad-type deal which I thought was a cool bonus.. just sign the screen and good to go. The coffee was perfect. It's definitely not a coffee that some places will give you where you wonder if there's actually some coffee hidden somewhere within the ocean of cream and sugar. This was good, clean, strong coffee and teamed up with the mocha it made for a really good drink. The dessert was O-K. Not the greatest I have had but it wasn't bad. Probably not worth the extra 6$ we spent on it, but it was fresh, so I think that's just a personal preference. There is a cute little patio outside to sit in, but we chose to wait outside the tattoo parlor instead, where there was another little table to sit at. Friendly barista, cute place, good prices, not packed, and great coffee. Will go here again!

Great little coffee shop. Pleasant atmosphere. Great place to chill out with a friend. The Bhakti chai is fantastic! In the warmer months, the patio is lovely - especially if you're out strolling with you pooch.

Lemon bars you are the stars!! Ok I know that DOESNOT make ANY sense BUT I am helpless!! The lemon bars at bittersweet made me go weak in my knees and send my 1 hour workout at the bootcamp down the drain and also made me addicted. How very bad of you bittersweet !! very very bad you are! Absolutely delicious!! I was actually stealing a bite from hubz and then he had to hide the plate [:d] The right dash of sweet with the absolute perfect lemony thingie!! Ummmm!! And the Coffee and the Barista!! Fantastic.. Add that into old town Louisville charm and you have yourself a perfect place to enjoy your perfect cup with your absolutely perfect self and may be someone else!!

Either they use fake eggs (egg beaters maybe?), or those were the rubberiest, grossest real eggs I've ever had. I've been excited to go here but if I wanted a crappy fake egg sandwich, I'd save my $6 and go to McDonalds (eww). So disappointed.

This is a gem of a local coffee shop - and I go to a lot of them so I should know! One of the biggest reasons I like this place is for the atmosphere. So many coffee shops feel like they are cafeterias doling out java to an army of customers. This place has a constant stream of traffic, too... but the atmosphere doesn't look tired or worn down. Maybe it is because they have chosen wood for most of the surfaces. I think it is because they distract your eye with so much local artistry displayed on the walls! They also host local musicians in the evenings, which ads to the artistic atmosphere. The coffee is always delicious. I also like the selection of tea and food. You can have a bakery style snack, or a delicious lunch. Either way, come with enough time to sit and enjoy the atmosphere! Its lovely here!

I gotta hand it to Old Town Louisville for getting yet another cool little local spot on Main Street. This place was perfect for sitting down and getting a little work done while I had breakfast. I had their french press coffee (always, ALWAYS get that when it's an option) and it is by far the best coffee I have ever had. The guy at the country was friendly and personable and knew just about everyone on a first name basis. I had the veggie breakfast panini with eggs, artichoke hearts, veggie chorizo and cheese and every bite was absolutely delicious. They have free, reliable wifi and a great patio for days you would rather sun yourself while you work. This place is deceptively expansive and there are outlets just about anywhere you need them. What gets them the final, extra star? While I was there, they played some Eiffel 65 followed by awesome Gaelic fiddle music. Big fan of a place with an eclectic mix of music like that.

Short & sweet: Service: 5 Pastries: 4 Wait time: 5 Price: 4 Cleanliness of bathroom: 4 Bittersweet Cafe and Confections, I'm going to call you "cute stuff" from now on 'cuz you so dang cute. I believe the new location for the cafe just next door is still under works which is exciting. I'm thinking it'll be a little roomier as the current space is the size of my pinky nail (but still cute!). The couch area is darling and my friend and I enjoyed our fattening pastries - a raspberry scone for her and an overwhelmingly sweet (but delicious) lemon bar. I probably should have had some dark coffee with it, but I'd already had a day's worth of caffeinated coffee happily swimming in my veins. Though I cannot vouch for the quality of the coffee or the espresso, I'm just going to assume it's awesome (and cute). Cute stuff, should the nights remain wet and rainy, I will be back (with an umbrella!) and then, you shall show me just how great your coffee is.

I've been in many, many times and while the coffee is decent (not my absolute favorite in the area), my order has been incorrect about half the time. Pretty frustrating.

I really like Bittersweet. As someone that works from home I need a great place to meet clients and Bittersweet is my favorite place to go. The coffee and food is great, it's not too noisy or too quiet, and though it's usually busy, I can always find a table. It's just a really comfortable place to hang out!

I stopped in here to get some work done & have lunch...and I am kind of on the fence about it. Pros: Coffee, yum Excellent food choices including a variety of salads I had a chocolate covered coconut macaroon...super delicious. Priced moderately, what you expect for similar places Excellent indoor and outdoor seating Con: When it wasn't being painfully slow, I kept getting kicked off their wifi, to the point that I couldn't get any work done. Bad enough that I would think twice about coming back here if I needed wifi to get whatever it was I needed getting done.

I went to this place again with my roommate last weekend while we were checking out the farmer's market. I should have hopped over to Cafe de Paris, but I thought this was a good opportunity to give this place another shot. This time my complaint is what you get for what you buy. Now bagels are really big and filling, and the bagel sandwiches are priced as such. But I ordered a sandwich that they suggested should be put on wheat bread instead - so I said ok. The sandwich I got was placed between two pathetically small pieces of sandwich bread. Awesome. What's even worse is that my friend, who had ordered right behind me, got her sandwich 15 minutes later while I sat there politely waiting before I began eating. And the man who brought me my sandwich had to double check and see what she had ordered. Secondly, my roommate ordered an iced tea and it was all ice. We sat down and about three sips later she was like, "Huh. I'm done?" For $2.75. Should have just bought one at a drug store. No free refills, of course - can't have that. Which doesn't make a lot of sense this there's such a waiting period between drinks and food - pretty sure most people order drinks to enjoy them with their food, not to buy time before the food comes.

I've been to bittersweet a bunch. Whether its just hanging out listening to the music they have every weekend or spending time doing school work- I am always pleased. I especially love the veg out and the pb bliss bar! Oh and their coffee is pretty darn good. I really appreciate this place being here cause I feel like it unites this little community in a really beautiful way.

This place has it all together now. The interior is rearranged and looks great. The AC keeps it chilly in the summer. The simple syrup (finally) keeps the iced coffee sweet. The menu is awesome. Pay with square is easy and sends me a receipt via email. And I'm writing this review on their newly upgraded and blazing fast wifi N connection. Well done, Bittersweet!

Being a Californian it was relieving to find a coffeeshop across the street from an iceskating rink in the midst of the cold. Their drink, accessorized with coffee art, did not disappoint. There was nothing bitter about the experience, only sweet.

I ordered the balsamic chicken salad. after they brought my salad to the table I had realized five or six bites into it they had forgotten to put the goat cheese on it. The chicken was so tough my jaw was getting sore from chewing it! My husband order a sandwich that came with egg salad. He did not finish the egg salad due to the taste being "not the best" as he put it. The environment is relaxed and they played good music. Unfortunately, I will never go back! I could have saved money by getting a salad from McDonalds that was better.

In my opinion, a good local coffee shop should have five basic qualities in order for me to go back more than once: 1. Comfy couches and chairs, as well as tables near electrical outlets, and several of them; 2. Free WiFi; 3. A great coffee, chai, and herbal tea selection (and yummy snacks earn bonus points); 4. Books and/or board games to pass the time; 5. Friendly staff that will let me sit for as long as I want without bothering me. Bittersweet is a cozy coffee shop which meets at least 3.5 out of my 5 criteria. The chai was good, the snacks great, the WiFi easily accessible, and the staff very friendly yet unobtrusive. They do have a couch, a comfy chair, and three tables (two are near outlets), but are limited in seating space. And they don't have any games that I could see. However, what Bittersweet lacks in chair space and entertainment, they make up for in quaint, small-town all-around good vibes. I would definitely suggest a visit sometime soon - and try the lava cake. Yum.

We love coming here for the coffee and the pastries...there's also some tasty and more hearty breakfast fare in the cooler case. They carry a lot of local products, which is great. Nice area to sit, both inside (couches & tables) and outside. They also have live music on occasion. Great addition to downtown!

I absolutely love this coffee shop. The service is amazing, the sweetest people ever. Everything is locally made and taste great! Awesome atmosphere inside and out. Great music. I love the hours, a coffee shop that stays open late is hard thing to find these days! This place is truly a Louisville treasure. Makes me wish I lived closer, I would be in there everyday! Thanks for being so friendly :)

Got a large french press coffee for $1.95. It's a medium-dark roast. Decent coffee. Smells a lot better than it tastes though. The cafe is pretty quaint. Bring a book or magazine and enjoy your cup of Joe. Too bad the desserts and pastries are not made in house. Also, tested out a few of the tables and none of the ones I tried were stable. Rocked back and forth thus causing my coffee to spill.

Ordered 2 pies to go (approx 3" pies) one cherry and one apple. What a ripoff! The apple had no fruit, just some gel like filling and the cherry had a few cherries in a gel like substance. The cost was $5.50 for each and I have hever been more disappointed or felt ripped off in a dessert.

Super-friendly staff, warm and tasty everything, and supports a lot of local people and events. Also, their cozy sitting area is great for curling up with a book. The outdoor patio is amazing, too. I love love love that I found this place. It's tucked back behind BOBs sandwich shop in that little shopping mall on Main St. in downtown. Don't stop until you find it! Totally worth it.

I love everything about this place, from the comfortable seating to the fair trade coffee. They do individual french presses and have free wi-fi. It looks like they're expanding and I can't wait to see how the new place looks. I'm glad to have a coffee shop in Louisville that isn't closed before I even get out of work. I foresee chill summer evenings hanging out with good friends on their patio in my future. Open late and super mellow. Love!!

Expensive!! You could get some of the same pastries at cheaper prices at another local bakery. Be careful with their touch-screen credit card payment thing when you make tipping decisions.

Supercute little coffee joint on the supercute Main St of Louisville. We enjoyed a nice afternoon of hot drinks, convo, and board games here. The staff was quite friendly, as well. I'll go back.

Update: They got a new router (that they probably don't need) and their internet still doesn't work. They tell customers to freeload on the next door business, Bob's, which does work. The owner does not seem to care enough to change their internet provider to one that works, such as Comcast.

    (1)
  • Phillip M.

The worst service and food in the world. I waited 20 min for a BLT and this was before any rush. The bread was rock hard and not in a good way. The staff acted like I wasn't even there. I work in downtown Louisville and will not recommend this to anyone, unless they are desperate, but you better bring money because everything is so expensive. If you want good coffee and pastries, go to Vic's down the street.

Awesome coffee, great pastries and the outdoor patio tops it off. My new favorite place.

    (5)
  • Ben K.

I love the atmosphere of this place and I really want to love the coffee. Sometimes they have a barista that cares and knows what he's doing, but many other times it's just a high school kid who could care less and creates a mediocre espresso drink. Even though I live in Louisville, I usually drive to Boulder and hang out at Ozo, where I can count on consistently excellent espresso drinks. I'd really love to change this behavior, but it's up to the owners here to get employees that care about coffee.

Love this place, great selection of tasty treats.. will write more later.. Can't wait til they move into their new home next door. The owner Patrick gave me a tour of this 1858 home that they are restoring into a new shop.. Its going to be amazing!!
