Rest in Peace to The Pantry Market. I stopped by there yesterday to pick up something on my way home and this tenacious little market had closed its doors. The sign was gone, and the pricing signs were all down. It had been closed long enough for local teens to put graffiti on the front wall of the building. I was very, very sad. I have visited this store from back when it was Ideal Market in the 1980s. Once The Corner Pantry at 9th and Main in Longmont closed, they moved into this location. One can only hope that an enterprising soul takes over the store.

I wish there were more of these nowadays, but alas...the neighborhood pantrys of the world are getting their ass kicked by the local SuperTarget/Walmart nowadays. But these guys prevail... Still here after several decades in business. A little run down, a bit rough around the edges, showing some of the decades of wear and tear from the high school kids from across the street, but, it's here...small, easy to get around in and supported by the kids and the old folks along with some of the hip old town crowd who all live or go to school nearby. If you live in the area, it's just right... and it makes the whole neighborhood just a little better by being there.

This grocery store is small... a kind of store of yesteryear which is not meant to be said in a negative way. This is a great little store for the Francis Street neighborhood and goes beyond of being to obtain just the basics. I mean it is no international super market but I was certainly impressed when I visited there. This place can probably pull through for you nicely if you are in a bind and get something that you typically get from your standard grocery store.

I'm giving this place 4 stars not for selection but tenacity. They're still there after at least half a century of being in business. I know, I grew up a few blocks away. A small neighborhood grocery store is, nowadays, rare. Something the kids from the nearby high school, middle school and grade school can all stop at and grab a pop and sneak a candy bar at on the walk home from school. A place small enough that an elderly couple living a couple of blocks away can comfortably get around to do their shopping without needing one of those motorized carts you can sit on that are almost required for elderly folks at the superstores. The selection is fair to good for dry goods. It's good on dairy (but be sure to check the use by date). The have an excellent meat section and the butcher is friendly and helpful. The fruit ... so so... veggies.. OK, but limited types (all the basic are there though). They have four checkout stands, but I can't remember the last time I saw more than 2 in use. It's charming, it's local and it's pretty darned good for what it is. We need more of these in our neighborhoods and less monster 1/4 mile deep superstores. Walgreens is trying to fill that smaller store niche to a degree, but there you've got a large corporate chain (not much different than a superstore, just smaller and more of the them). Shop at the Corner Pantry first if you can. They deserve your loyalty. They've been loyal to Longmont for many decades and I hope to see them there for many decades more.

A throwback to a 1984 grocery store, middle Americana food, a decent produce section including some organics, and fresh eggs. Did I mention all the really bad lighting?
