I really wanted to like the "new menu" but much prefer the "old whip." I had the fish tacos which were not great. It was a tiny sliver of fish in a flour tortilla. The whippletree margarita was good, but the food needs work. Sorry whippletree, but the new menu needs to be reborn again.

We were in at lunchtime on a Sunday. I had a cheese enchilada/chile relleno combo and my husband had the "whip burger". loved the salsa and the music selection, waitress good...everything else frozen, canned or otherwise sub-standard. Wouldn't recommend it!

Cute mountain restaurant, decent food, friendly staff. Served us chips and salsa before our meal. Enjoyed the enchiladas which came with rice and black beans. Nice little lunch spot!

Frozen food heated up, unfriendly service and a restaurant that needs a very good cleaning. Somehow the tacos and the enchiladas looked the same. Don't touch the salt and pepper shakers as they seem to stick to your skin which was gross. Would definitely skip this place if in the area and try a better rated locale.

We go very often, sometimes once a week. Best food in Evergreen, hands down! Great service, great quality, and the food is delicious. The green chili is the best I've ever had, the chips and salsa are perfect, and the margs are good too. Love a Mexican restaurant that plays classic rock.

Came here today with my mom for lunch. The patio was inviting so that's where we headed. Our waitress was young and had no personality what so ever. It was as if we were bothering her. We tried to joke with her to lighten the mood, but to no avail. Her first comment was "So you want some chips and salsa". Please don't start a sentence with So...My mom ordered the small rib eye and it came with grilled veges or cottage cheese. We asked what kind of veges came with it and she said "ummmm.....let me think". The thinking went on a little too long. When all else fails say "seasonal veges". I had the fajita burrito. It was tasty and the veges are fresh. I actually come her for the salsa. It's super fresh and chunky! Our food overall was good. I do like it there and have been there twice in the last month. I will come back, but today the service was pretty poor. Don't go here with big service expectations. It's hit or miss. Also, their salt/pepper shakers had a nice coat of ketchup on the top. Hopefully a rain storm went over and cleaned things up a bit for the next round of customers this evening.

Can't say I'd go out of my way to go here but it's good grub food. PROS: Food was better then it looked. Service was decent. Prices were average. Cozy pad. No wait on a Sat. afternoon. Multiple TVs with sports CONS: Most bland salsa I have ever tasted.

They have a new Chef, Jay. He's been here for a few months and WOW! Their menu is "the bomb"... creative, fun, and delicious! (Just don't look here for " health food"!). They have a wonderful salmon salad - Sonoran Salmon with a huge slab of grilled salmon, a crispy quinoa cake and tons of great veg's. Their fajitas, available with all bells & whistles, or stripped down with just the meat, onions & peppers are juicy and incredibly flavorful. The pot roast (smoked for 12 hrs) with a squash & goat cheese casserole was heart attack on a plate - but what a way to go!! I wish I could remember what I had last night - with a scrumptious Baja cream sauce...??? Well, it was quite yummy! The Whippletree is an Evergreen "oldtimer" on the Bergen Park circle; it doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't judge a book by its cover!

If I was rating this restaurant on food quality alone, I would give it 5 stars. I had 3 different a la cart tacos and they were all tasty, the fish taco was my favorite as the carne asada and portobello tacos were a bit too spicy for me. (I have a low spice tolerance level though.) My husband raved about his Carne Asada Enchilada and my toddler's Bean & Cheese Burrito was excellent. The food was fresh and there was lots of variety to choose from. My husband said the beer was nice and cold, so he ordered more than usual. The server lady was efficient and a man I can only assume is the chef/possible owner came out of the kitchen to make sure we enjoyed everything. The missing star is due to the fact that the place could use some updates. It's an older building and the decor could use a little "freshening". The stalls in the women's bathroom were a bit dark, though plenty of light by the mirror. I was pleased to see a diaper changing station, though happy I didn't need to use it due to the lack of light. The only other complaint would be that our menus were not clean. The overall state of the restaurant was clean.

$4 pints of craft beer, yes please! Also the fried chicken sandwich with bacon and ranch was spot on delicious. And the fries were nice and crispy, which for a busy nights seems to get overlooked at many places. The steak fajitas were overcooked, and didn't come with salsa, the guac was gross - no idea what they were going for, but the rice was interesting. Service was a little slow and they messed up the bill. We will go back hopefully before the weather turns to sit on the patio, or it seems like a cozy bar for the winter time.

We went here thinking it was a Mexican restaurant. While they have some Mexican food it's really more of a Western restaurant. Our waitress was sweet and the other staff seemed friendly, but the food was just ok. We don't plan on going back.

Went here on a Sunday afternoon for the first time at a friend's recommendation who grew up on the area. Glad we did. They outdoor patio is perfect for summer, the fajita burrito and the tropical fish tacos were very good, and the service was excellent. Not a huge fan of paying $2 for chips and salsa but they were decent.

Had lunch at the "Whip" for the first time in a long time. Wow, the place has a fresh feel when I walked in, All new hi-top tables in the front room and the bar looked great also. My lunch was wonderful, and a good value for the portion. It was fresh upscale Mexican, and there are several seafood entree's as well. I hope everyone in the neighborhood and visitor's will give this restaurant a try. The "new menu" sign out front really means it! Going back this week for dinner, can't wait.

Excellent tacos. Kids mac & cheese was a really good; no boxed mac & cheese here. Will definitely be back.

So after staying away from Whippletree for several years, my friend and I attempted it again...to no avail. Yes the patio was nice, especially on a beautiful summer evening in Evergreen. Unfortunately, the fact that I had to call attention to a server after sitting for over 10 minutes without being acknowledged should have been an indication of things to come. Chips and salsa had to be ordered twice before arriving. We tried the House Margarita first, not good. 2nd Margarita was sent back due to being undrinkable...server was very rude about it and stated "this is what you ordered", yes I ordered a "drinkable" margarita. 3rd try...even worse. Server ignored the fact that it wasn't touched and charged us anyway... When the man sitting next to us food arrived, he let the server know it wasn't what he ordered. Her comment to him, "Yes you did, I wrote it down.", she then walked away.....the look on his face was astonishment. Now the food we ordered and received was actually good (therefore 2 stars are given here). Unfortunately the rude wait staff and bad drinks won't have these locals coming back.

We've been to Whippletree a couple times before, but don't really get up to Evergreen that often. This time I had the Mexican Hamburger, which was pretty good. I chose to get the brussel sprouts as my side, and man, they were good. If you like brussel sprouts, I would highly recommend ordering them. We also started with the Queso Fondido - which was good. Hubby got the BBQ Trio and the coffee bbq sauce that came with it was interesting. It was sweeter than I thought it would be. It wasn't bad, but not my favorite. Our waitress was attentive and fun. It was a pretty good trip. We will definately stop in again when we are in Evergreen.

Yelpers were right on target with this one- it deserves a solid 3.5 stars. The food was pretty good and well priced, and they were tolerant of crabby kids. Would definitely return!

Just tried this little gem and thought it was delish!! The chips are thin with excellent seasoning, salsa perfect. I tired the shrimp and chorizo tacos with were fabulous!! I also had the fish tacos which were good, the relish is sweet but it still could have had a little more flavor for me. My husband got the fajita burrito with chicken and smothered in green chili and WOW was it good!!! This will be a new Mexican spot for us!

I tried Whippletree takeout tonight and I have to say the mac and cheese was the best mac and cheese I've had! It has just the right amount of flavors... It's not overly spicy or too smokey! It's wonderful! The onion rings are great as well! I would absolutely recommend this restaurant!

I know there are a ton of mixed reviews, but I happen to love this place. It's by far my favorite restaurant in Evergreen. I've never had a bad meal or bad experience here. Go grab a raspberry margarita and some steak nachos... YUM!

Been here a few times in recent months (lunch and dinner) and had super meals. The traditional Mexican fare is delicious - with AMAZING sauces which are made in house (try the red chile mole, not too spicy not too mild). The meats are also excellent and high quality - I am partial to the delicious dry rubbed chicken, and also like the shredded beef. They have am excellent mixed drinks menu and beer selection, with an excellent house margarita. And for what it's worth, the burgers are also great. Look forward to many more meals here.

After a second visit here, which was takeout, I am giving this place two stars. the foo the first time was much better. The toppings on the takeout tacos were not the same as the ones I had when I dined in. Once again, the sopapillas were raw dough :(

Only went there once, the food was pretty decent, nothing remarkable. The food experience was eclipsed by the awful service we received. The older lady waiting our table was both incredibly rude and nearly non-existent before and during our meal. I'll try it again some day but would withhold a recommendation at this point.

The patio was great on a mild, late-summer afternoon with views of the clouds rolling in over the foothills. The food? Not so much. It was mediocre at best and who the hell charges for chips and salsa??? The green chile was bland (I had to add salt so it would at least taste like something) and took on an unappealing gelatinous texture when it cooled off. I'd go back just to chill on the patio with a cold beer and then head around the corner to Tequila's if I'm hankering for decent Mexican food.

We finally found good Mexican food in our new 'hood! The atmosphere is cozy and not fussy. The service is attentive without being intrusive. Best of all is the food. My husband had the green chile mac-n-cheese which was creamy and tasty with lots of yummy bits of chicken, chili, etc. I had the shrimp relleno with a risotto cake and a spicy lobster sauce. All was simply and thoughtfully prepared. We will definitely be back!

  • Tom M.

Could be worse if you order wrong. Blue corn enchiladas good. Service was good. Chips and salsa were $2 extra and we didn't really really want them. Tequila's around the corner is a lot better. The bad thing (for us at least) is that there is a gathering of local early afternoon drinkers that get kinda loud.

My wife used to have to drag me whinning and complaining to "The Whip". Same old tired, worn out, booring menu. Recently, I was hauled back again. Amazing, a new menu and it was great. We had the taco's. Pick three choices for $ 9.00. Wonderful. Tonight I couldn't wait to take the family back. I wanted to try out the rest of the menu, but I couldn't resist the tacos. So I picked 3 more. Great food. The green sauce is amazing. If they're smart, they'll start selling it by the bottle. I'll eventually get to the rest of the menu. We're all hooked now. ps: The new artwork is cool too. Promote your local art scene !

We stopped in for dinner and experienced their new menu. I was very disappointed, all my favorites and my family's favorites were gone. I had a hard time deciding what to order. After reading the menu 5 times, I finally ordered a chimichanga. Personally my family preferred the old menu. The new menu was part of an overhaul, new chef, new menu, new paint and paintings in the dining room. The wait staff looked new. I asked was told the owner is the same. I also start my meal with chips and salsa. I always loved their chunky mild red salsa. Now they have a smooth green salsa. My son put salt on the chips as they needed it. The chips and salsa were both better previously. The smoked chicken in my chimichanga was dry and bland. Could not taste any smoked taste, and it needed seasoning. The rice was also bland, definitely needed salt and possibly other seasoning. The refried beans were cold, dry and very thick, also needed seasoning. I ordered the chimichanga with their mild sauce, which was tasty but it didn't go with the dish. It tasted like an artichoke dip. I ate my meal but would not order it again. My son used to always order the Mountain Burger for $10. It was 1/2 pound burger. Gone from the menu. He had to order the Build Your Own Burger. By the time he added Cheese, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms for 75¢ each and the bacon for a extra dollar. Now the burger cost $12.25 and I think the meat patty is less than 1/2 pound (its weight is not listed on the menu, but I'd guess it was 1/4 or 1/3 pound). It was perfectly cooked to medium-rare, but it needed salt. The onion rings severed with burger for an extra $2 were excellent. The old Mountain Burger (with rings) for $11 was much better than the Build You Own with rings for $14.25. We used to eat at Whippletree regularly, but probably not anymore. Don't like the new menu and the food needed seasoning. With our small sampling, we thought the old food was much better.

We go here frequently and enjoy the new menu. The menu is simple but there are some interesting choices. I have ordered many different things and am always satisfied. A great option in Bergen Park/Evergreen.

I stopped into the Whippletree Restaurant after hearing good things about the recent changes in their menu. For the appetizer, I had the brussels sprout grilled corn Elote. It was fabulous! From there I ordered the carne asada, tropical fish and the shrimp & chorizo tacos. The carne came with guacamole, cheese and a nice salsa picante. The shrimp and chorizo had fresh salsa verde. The beer battered fish came with a papaya mango salsa that was out of this world! I strongly recommend it. Our waitress told us that Saturday is smoked prime rib night. I will be back with friends to try that!

Stopped into the Whippletree for the first time ever the other day. We were on our way to Boulder from Vail and needed to take a lunch break from the Sunday traffic. I was pleasantly surprised!! I had the dry rubbed chicken sandwich which may be one of the best I've ever had. You must try the chipotle apple slaw. The patio and view is great, best enjoyed with a margarita. Will definitely be back for more!

We were visiting from out of town and tried the Whippletree last friday night. The relatives we were visiting had heard that the restaurant had gotten better. Unfortunately, both the food and the service were hit or miss. We enjoyed the salsa as well as the sloppy nachos. My husband enjoyed his Whip enchiladas. The tequila-lime chicken taco had good flavors but was too spicy to enjoy (& i love spicy food). My daughter ordered the smoked chicken taco and the smoke flavor was much too strong. It overpowered all the other flavors. What was most disappointing, however, was the service. We arrived around 6:30 and were seated quickly & our drink order was taken. After that, things went down hill. It took a long time for our food to arrive and after it was delivered, no one checked on us for a while. By this time, we were the only table in the room so I couldn't understand what was taking our waitress away.

Love this place! There aren't an abundance of fun places to meet friends in Evergreen but this is our favorite. The staff is friendly - they recognize patrons by name - and the food is good. The perfect margaritas are our favorite. The menu is very casual - lots of Mexican choices.

The Whip has a new life. I was just about to give up on the "same old same old" cheese and bean Mexican American. Some may be put off by the recent menu shake up but the new Chef has bumped up the flavor profile. I have been going to the Whip since 1980. This is a great change. Some of the old combos are gone. Some plates are reborn. If you complain about the favorites being gone you'd complain about upgrading any aspect of your boring life. The new menu is fresh, Colorado. The vibe is how you make it. The staff is still great local service. Don't be shy. If you wanted more before and stopped going there give it a new try. If you didn't see your favorite be adventurous and try a new dish. This is a great price point for the quality.

I have eaten at the Whippletree 6 or 8 times and the food is decent and reasonably priced. The burgers are good. The Mexican food is OK... not authentic, but not bad. Nice little hole in the wall kind of atmosphere with a bar. Pleasant patio when the weather is good. The people were friendly too. Good place to go after a hike or bike ride on Bergen Peak / Elk Meadow for some socializing.

My wife and I are big fans. We make it a point to go by the Whippletree when we are out on one of our Saturday day mountain drives. They aren't perfect, it's kind of a hole in the wall mountain bar, but the food is very good. Wife really likes the Chili Rellenos. I have to agree with other posters, the salsa was kind of bland for a while but the last time we were there, they had obviously spiced it up (but it was a tad on the onionish side) and the in-house fried tortilla chips were very good. I see a couple people complain about service issues but I have never experienced that myself. Definitely a "give it a try" place.

When I was a little kid, my parents used to bring us from time to time up to 'the Whip'. For my brothers and me, it was a fun place to grab some big portioned Mexican grub. For my folks, it was a family friendly environment where it was socially acceptable to toss down a couple of big margaritas - which they totally earned for putting up with their children. They still make a pretty mean margarita, and the food is not half bad. Definitely worth trying if you are in the Evergreen area!

The Whip has good fresh salsa they give you when you're seating. I order a quesadilla which is really more like a mexican pizza but it was very good.

This place gets one extra star because the food is good but wait staff is completely inattentive. Second time in a row here with the same issue. I feel like I should bring my own water and clear plates.

  • Grace B.

I grew up coming here with my grandparents so I have soft spot in my heart for the Whippletree. I agree that the salsa is bland, and the service has been spotty the past few years, but I still love their fajitas and chilli rellenos.

Overall, this restaurant had decent food and slightly sub-par service. I thought the chips and salsa were pretty good, as were the enchiladas and the prices. I probably would not go out of my way to go here but it's a nice stop if you are in town.

My husband and I go in to the "whip" quite a bit as we live just down the road. It's been hit or miss lately. The food is ALWAYS good, but we've had to wait 30 minutes (and it wasn't busy) before anyone acknowledges us. The margaritas are very good as well as the Fajita Burrito...give it a try if your ever in Evergreen

The best mexi-american in the area plus they have a fun wait staff and bar. Food is always good and priced well.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
