Super tasty ! Stopped in for lunch with my family during a street fair and we were happy we did so. Staff was very welcoming and food excellent. Fish was very fresh. My young son enjoyed to see the chef cut and make sushi rolls. Definitely a trip worth making from the city all while enjoying a summer event in Sausalito

Just delicious. Sweet ginger Service was good and they stayed open late for us. The miso soup was great and the tuna, avocado rolls wrapped with salmon were amazing.

Mistake!!! I was craving Shrimp Tempura Udon Soup and ordered it. I should have asked a few questions first. I ate my 2 shrimp tempura, then bit into what turned out to be a slice of banana! Seriously?!? Fried bananas are for dessert with honey and ice cream, not Japanese soup. The soup was noodles with a couple of carrots and onions in it. This wasn't what I was expecting, where is the seaweed and fish cake and other stuff that should go into this. I didn't feel like going thru the hassle of sending everything back, so I paid for it and left without touching my soup. Oh - and I speak some Chinese - these people are NOT Japanese in the slightest. This is my town and I live here, but will not go back here. I remember doing take-out sushi from them years ago and not liking it.

Very cool little spot. We eat there often and have yet to be disappointed. Very low key, just the way I like it.

Big disappointment. I went based on Yelp rating and reviews. While there is absolutely nothing worth mentioning, I'm reviewing to correct the Yelp perspective: overall the dinner was a big disappointment. The food was very so-so and the atmosphere is more of a corner coffee place to grab cheap coffee and read email in the afternoon. Also not properly heated. The mango and major tartar on sea weed salad was absurd: 5 little rounds heaped on cucumber slices that were overpowering and too spicy. The miso soup was OK. The sushi was not bad but the Maguro was cut incorrectly and just a slab of fish. No sensual experience. The Unagi was drowned in sauce that was way too sweet with no distinctive flavor. Too much money for what they serve.

This was our first experience at Sweet Ginger and we loved it. We have been to sushi bars all over the Bay Area but this one is one of our favorites. Great sushi rolls and tempura and cheap house saki that is delicious! We will definitely be back!

I live literally a quarter of a mile north from this place, but I thought for the sake of this review I would also rate the delivery. Lady on the phone was friendly and talked to me on first name basis which is nice. I ordered Yakitori and Tempura Undon. They said it would arrive in 30 minutes and it did so that is good. The delivery guy was also very polite. The food was good but could be improved. The Yakitori and the Soup lacked that extra flavour to make it great.

We came here at the tailend of the lunch period to snag some sushi. I was disturbed when I walked in the door to find a sign that read "Restrooms for employees only" which is not allowed if you serve alcohol (which they do). Sat down with the crew and the place was empty but that didn't distract us. I had some gyoza, Shrimp Tempura roll and the NY Roll. Both pretty standard and delicious. It was a great spot to come to for a spur of the moment but nothing worth bragging about. The staff was very nice though :D

I shouldn't be writing this review, because it's counter productive for me, but Sweet Ginger is quickly becoming my favorite sushi bar. Just a block away from Sushi Ran, Sweet Ginger is quiet, serves great sushi and is VERY reasonable. No it isn't as trendy, but I don't care about trendy, I just want good sushi. The "Almond Shrimp Tempura" is awesome as is the "Salmon Mango Tartar". The gari is the best I've ever had and it isn't crowded (I have no idea why). I highly recommend.

Charlie and I ended up at Sweet Ginger one evening on a date night. We sat at the sushi bar because we wanted to watch the action and so we could repeat it in the comfort of our own home. We recently found a new interest in making our own rolls. Once we realized how creative and fun it was we were definitely looking for inspiration. We soon discovered the talent of the chef. He is amazing! It was way over our head to repeat at home. The waiter had great suggestions and we soon broadened the dishes that we order this day forward. We've been 3 times since and every time we seat immediately and always enjoy the fresh fish and great service. We love to support a business like Sweet Ginger.

I cringed when I heard the following words from my uncle after taking my grandpa and evil cousin from Taiwan to Muir Woods, "We can go to Sausalito for lunch and don't even have to go into the City!" Damn...our Bi-Rite side trip was ruined :( Ever since I had the crappiest J-food in the US, Ray's Sushi in Hayward (AVOID!) yelp.com/biz/rays-sushi-… , I've been suspicious of J-food in general in the Bay Area. Luckily, they served one wicked chirashi sushi in Marin (yes, I'm bring wicked to the Bay Area)! yelp.com/biz_photos/fJtL… My cousin's tempura was quite good as well, though the carrots on the udon was a bit weird and not purely authentic? yelp.com/biz_photos/fJtL… The rest of our party had the bento boxes. My uncle and grandpa both said that the tonkatsu was a bit too hard and overcooked because the meat piece was too thin (the best tonkatsu I ever had is still in Osaka). yelp.com/biz_photos/fJtL… and yelp.com/biz_photos/fJtL… The wait time was a bit long though since it's only a couple (Japanese?) that runs the place but worth the wait!

This place puts the "s" in sucks! Our family went here to grab a bite after sightseeing and man were we disappointed. We're from southern Cali, where sushi joints are abundant but we expected much more from a place literally on the coast. Sushi was horrible, service was slow and waitress forgot several things. It took 40 minutes for our two sushi rolls to come and we were one of 4 guests. Check came to $55 after two rolls, edamame, chicken skewer and two lemonades! Argh!!!

  • Alyson C.

Overpriced, but it's the only decently priced CA Roll in Sausalito. $7 (ridicks) Way better than Sushi Ran.

  • Lisa A.

Came here with sushi-avid friends after a long bikeride over the Golden Gate. We ordered the seaweed salad, salmon maki, and the rock n' roll, which were all super fresh and filling. The salmon, especially had a buttery, savory taste that has rivaled the best of any I've had. I didn't put five stars because although the food was excellent, the rolls were very simple (albiet tastey). Great little find; wouldn't have found it without yelp!!

If you order a bento box at a sushi restaurant, you are not a sushi fan... (go to Safeway and buy a pre-packaged California roll...) Have been to SG many times and never had a single complaint. Fresh sashimi and good sake at reasonable prices...

  • Zoya z.

Great food, a very so-so service. The sushi was fresh and delicious, but by the time it was delivered to our table we were so hungry we probably could have eaten anything placed in front of us. The lady serving barely cracked a smile, forgot to bring my water and the last roll took so long we told them to forget it. And no, they weren't packed at all. The dragon roll was great as well as the 49er's and the Rock N Roll. The sign by the bathroom stated "for employees only" which puzzles a customer in need of a good pee. Nice seating outside, great food. Fix the service and the speed and you'll be on your way to a great sushi place.

I am a NYC food and winey.....and I love the sushi here. And what is more important is that I love the people who own Sweet Ginger! Especially in the spring when you sit outside. The sushi is fresh and the posrtions are incredible and what is more important is that they will custom make any roll you ask for!!

  • John Z.

Sweet Ginger isn't going to knock your socks off, but they will impress you with their generous portions and fresh shashimi. The seafood Udon bowl was absolutely perfect with jumbo shrimp, oysters, whitefish, and fishcake. The broth was perfectly flavored with bonito flakes. The most impressive aspect of Sweet Ginger is the huge chunks that they provide for the shashimi. The CA sushi rolls were also delicious with fresh snow crab, light mayo, and perfect avocado. The prices were just about right considering the location and cost of product. Sweet Ginger's service was also very friendly and helpful. I'd like to give them 4 stars, but it's not quite at 4-star caliber. With that said, Sweet Ginger is a great little restaurant that will definitely provide a solid dining out experience.

Sweet Ginger is my favorite sushi restaurant in Marin! I'd describe it as a humble restaurant. It's not the hip scene as another well known Sausalito sushi restaurant it's more quiet. Sweet Ginger is mellow but the food is fresh, delicious and more affordable and the staff is great! My favorites at Sweet Ginger are the Seaweed Salad - fresh and crisp, the Garlic Hamachi (I think it's the Hamachi - it's on their special board usually), the Sake Salmon - so fresh and yummy, the Rock and Roll and of course the California Roll. The staff is friendly and always remembers us.

    Service ok;sushi fresh .

  • Adriana G.

Reasons I love Sweet Ginger: yummay sushi friendly service avoid "the scene" & the crowd (go down a few blocks for that) desserts are delish on a nice day you could eat outside and bring you doggie w/ you affordable

  • Wendy B.

There aren't many affordable Japanese restaurants in Marin, let alone Sausalito, so beggars can't be choosers. I'll come here for some standards, chicken teriyaki or katsu and my hubby will eat the sushi but it's not my first pick. The udon and ramen aren't tasty enough for me so I wouldn't bother. Service is friendly and it's affordable by Marin standards.

  • Timothy D.

Sweet Ginger is a great Japanese and sushi restaurant especially considering the reasonable prices. And they deliver!!! It's owned and managed by a family which makes the service personable and friendly. If it's warm, eating outside is an option. We love the butterfish & miso bass dinners - always fresh and perfectly cooked. Sushi - especially rolls - is awesome. Spider rolls, unagi, it's all good. Elegant and high priced? No, stylish, friendly fresh and generous? Yes. I'll take it every time!

So, we went and tried a sit-down meal at Sweet Ginger. Loved it as much as, if not more than, the delivery experience we had. We sat outside so I cannot speak for the interior ambiance (that will come in a future review). It was one of those rare balmy evenings in Sausalito. The few tables are across the street from the old library and park, lovely. As for the food, man these guys make good sushi! Great rice and incredibly fresh seafood. That eel in the Rock and Roll is amazing and we load up on the Sake (the salmon not the rice wine). There was a special of the day, Shrimp and Mango Roll, which was a wonderful combination. Simple and tasty. The service was friendly and quick. The place was not terribly busy which I am hoping was because it was a week night and I think they were just glad to have guests. It must be hard in this economic slum (read as: "Get out and eat! You don't have to spend much and it really helps support a lot of folks in the service industry!") Dessert was the green tea ice cream wrapped in sweet, little pancakes then flash-fried in tempura. I really liked it for clarity of tastes, if that makes sense. A small dollop of whipped cream on top, crispy outside, sweetness of the cakes and then the cool, mellow green tea.

Yes, I've tried the place down the street, which is great of course - but ignoring that and giving this place a try on it's own merits, we thought Sweet Ginger was great too. I've been here twice now and both times I was super satisfied with everything - the fresh and tasty rolls, the friendly and attentive service, good desserts, and not too bad a price tag. It's a nice, basic looking place with nice basic food options, which are done very very well from everything we tried. They always seem to be open, and I know I'll feel especially drawn in every time I walk by now. Will definitely be back!

In a small town like Sausalito with only two Japanese restaurants, i guess I must say I didn't have high expectations, and I was right. My hubs and I tried this place out for dinner on Thursday for the first time in the entire year we've been living in Sausalito. When we went in, the restaurant was nearly empty, except for, literally, one customer... on a prime time around 7, 7:30pm. Hmmm. We were welcomed by the Chef behind the counter and the waiter, were seated promptly. Got our menus promptely, water and beer promptly... (which is nice but hey, there's no way they'd have problems with the aforementioned given how empty the place was, right.) Husband ordered Chicken Teriyaki dinner, and I ordered the Misoyaki Butterfish. I didn't order anything sushi or sashimi as after reading some reviews here on Yelp I was somewhat skeptical. Husband said his Chicken Teriyaki was "OK". He's married to me, a Japanese chick that cooks Japanese dishes all the time so I know he's pretty hard to please but still, he later on described his dinner as "microwave TV dinner like". The misoyaki butterfish was OK too. Good buttery fish (it's butter fish, duh), sweet marinade/glaze although I didn't taste much miso in it at all, and came with shichimi (Japanese version of chili powder, which actually is a mixture of seven spices) sprinkled on top. The glaze tasted pretty good but if I were the chef I would never pre-sprinkle shichimi on any Japanese food. Those things by default should be on the tables available for customers to use when they please. Personally the shichimi didn't do much to the fish, I would've had the same reaction without the spice. Aside from the main dish, our dinner came with a scoop (literally) of rice and miso soup. Miso soup used firm, cheap cubes of tofu that you can get nowadays in any supermarket, and somehow (and oddly) had undercooked slices of mushrooms (western/white kind, not shiitake or enoki or anything) floating on top. The soup itself was pretty flavourful compared to some other Japanese restaurants I've been to here in SF bay area but those mushrooms were quite puzzling to me. Also should've had more scallions and seaweed in the soup. Rice was literally a scoop. in a icecream scooper shape. Which really was not enough. Husband's dinner was around $14 for food, and mine was around $19. Honestly, I would value his dinner at $9 and mine around $12, so I am not happy at all with the price we paid. You can get a more satisfying meal at restaurants in SF J-town for 2/3 of the price here, and those restaurants in J-town ain't all that great either... but at least you get more for what you pay. But in Sausalito? well, it's still cheaper than eating at Sushi Ran... but you get what you pay for I suppose. Overall I felt that the food we ordered there were either seasoned with packaged/store bought sauce and/or were homemade yet non-Japanese interpretation of Japanese food. The waiter was talkative and he really was trying to flirt with us and the other guests that came in after us and at least was quite attentive, coming back to fill my husband's glass of beer until the bottle was empty, but the people that run this place are not Japanese (Chinese to be exact from what the waiter was saying to another customer). So, for Japanese food made by Chinese guys? I guess in that regard they were pretty good. So, Is it authentic Japanese? No. Was the food good? They were OK. Was the price fair? No. Would we go back there? Only if we are really really lazy to cook, don't feel like splurging at Sushi Ran, and are willing to settle for Japanese-ISH food. A couple of trivia though,... UnaJu on their menu says it's eel over sushi rice. SUSHI RICE? I really hope that's a type-o as UnaJu is NOT supposed to come with sushi rice. And FYI Spicey Peach Chicken and Garlic Prawns & Shrimp are not considered Japanese food at all... in fact never heard of them.

Sushi delivery is a huge plus. I know it sounds weird, but hey, when you're lazy and really really tired of pizza, it's not a bad option. So needless to say, sushi delivery is pretty good - rice isn't dry, fish isn't weird. Just as good as going to the restaurant and getting it. Stopped by there one afternoon and tried the udon - would not recommend getting. Broth isn't quite salty enough, and noodles are a little too hard (rather than chewy). Order delivery here.

Woah! I am really enjoying this place. I have been here about five times now, and its been very consistent. It is not the best sushi to be had in the bay area, but it is very good (especially for the price). Last night I enjoyed Uni (Sea Urchin) for my first time. It was very good. It was a little spongy, a bit salty, but overall very good. I was skeptical before. One thing is for absolute sure, this has some amazing side effects :) Miso is miso, and it was great. The albacore with garlic... oh boy, what a difference a little garlic can do on this classic sushi dish. The fish was very fresh. The Caledonia roll was built for me. If I had to pick out my ingredients to make a perfect roll, this has it all, and some I wouldn't have thought to add that make it a touch mo' betta! Avocado, shrimp, eel, cucumber.... The Seered Ahi Salad was a favorite because the dressing is the perfect sweet and light blend with the fresh ahi. Size is nice, the fish was pretty good. Could have been a little better, but nothing to really gripe about. The Green Tea Ice Cream , and Chocolate Mousse are pretty good as well, but in the future I may pass, and take up ice cream or desert down the street somewhere instead. The service was excellent in my opinion. The head chef whom I believe is the owner as well, is a great guy. Always friendly, waving, and smiling even when I am walking by the restaurant. The service is very pleasant from start to finish. The actual decor is fine. Nothing fancy, but it doesn't need to be. It's great sushi when you want it, and the consistency is the deal sealer.

My fiancé and I come here all the time...it's great because it's usually not too busy which is nice, the price is reasonable, and sushi is great. It sure beats paying an arm and leg over at sushi ran thats just down the street although it is more of a casual dining place, not nearly as fancy as sushi ran. My fiancé and I usually order seaweed salad, miso soup, California roll..which is by the way really fresh, fried spicy tuna roll called the Godzilla roll, sweet ginger roll, or the tempura...which my 2 year old daughter loves. The spicy ahi poki salad is wonderful as well. The lady who works there is sweet as can be and is great at recommending a choice suitable for us when we wanna switch it and try something new. The sushi chef always smile at us when we come in, it really is a quiet comfortable and pleasant atmosphere. Great for last min get out the house and get dinner type of place...especially if your a local like myself

Always good. If what you want is fish, this place is great. The rolls are good, but lack the fancy specialness and presentation you'll get for 2x the cash. Living in Sausalito, Sweet Ginger is my go to for "I want sushi." The other fancier restaurants are for dinner with friends or business. I'm not sure where the negativity comes from, but it sure isn't regular diners. Everyone I know who tries Sweet Ginger goes back.

My favorite place in town for Japanese food. Friendly staff, fresh delicious food. The shrimp tempura rolls are the best in town. (Yes. Better than Sushi Ran. Trust me.) Don't get me wrong; Sushi Ran is good too but usually an hour wait, expensive, and sometimes a little on the snooty side. Sweet Ginger is very welcoming, reasonably priced and I have never left disappointed.

Even at comparable prices (i.e. not just at Sushi Ran down the street), there is better sushi to be had in Southern Marin. I do like the casual feel of this place and the friendly, albeit somewhat frazzled, service. No reservations required. No attitude. Good for takeout. And the sushi isn't BAD - it's just not the greatest around. We loved the flaming (yes, as in flambe) scallop/mushroom dish, and the Caledonia roll was nice. I really should have skipped the Tako/octopus, though; it was tough and stringy and rubbery. Side note: One of the 2 sushi chefs is a woman. That's a rare sight, but I respect them for it.

I can't give this place a thorough review yet since I only ordered take out. Long story short...I was hungover and watching crap movies (that I often end up loving), and last Sunday the movie just happened to be Ramen Girl with Brittany Murphy...I know, I know. After the movie was over I was on a mission for ramen! I was about to give up until I found Sweet Ginger on Yelp! I called and ordered some...it's the one on their lunch special with fish cake, "fancy" pork and eggs. Happy to say, I ate the entire thing. I honestly think it was a serving for 3! I have to try their sushi next because the inside of this place smelled fabulous! Go team.

  • Rebeca R.

The food is so so if what you are looking for is cheap sushi (cheap sushi is usually the equivalent to not fresh fish, aarrrgh!). Then come the nightmares from all of that MSG. No, no, no! And the music is so bad... Why would anyone bother when Sushi Ran is just a couple of blocks away? That's the real deal. Amazing food and service. You get what you pay for.

    (1)
  • Seung Hyun Y.

This ain't japanese! This place has to go back to rice making basics. use measuring cup for rice and water. Use short grain rice, not long grain. Do these people know the difference?! Apparently not. Not only that, food here didn't seem fresh. The group and I got as far as having a cup of tea, looking over at the other table and observed. Sushi fell apart when someone picked it up and the smell of day old fish. We got up to leave real quick! And..we didn't bother to order food either.

    (1)
  • Forest S.

A humble Japanese restaurant with average dishes. I tried the Pork Katsu and was fairly surprised at how moist the pork tasted even after it was tenderized, breaded and fried. The plus side is the portions are much larger than Marin's only Hawaiian restaurant. No macaroni salad offered. I would definitely return to give their sushi dishes a try.

  • Michelle G.

Easily the best spot around for sushi or a quick stop in for some sake and a quick bite. Affordable enough to try lots, super friendly which makes you feel at home and want to go back often (which we do). The food is always fresh and delish' and the service is amazing (attentive, but not obnoxiously hawking your table while you sit and enjoy/take your time). I've done both eating in (lots of times) and ordering out, and both are great.

Sausalitans need to cross that bridge and experience real Japanese. This place don't cut it. I came here with a group of 11 other people wondering if our large group would effect the service and food. But not a problem. No one came when we got there, ate or left. I think I can safely say I've had good and bad sushi and this place joins the bad ranks. The menu has a decent variety. I got the teriyaki salmon with sush (the only sushi that comes with it is the fried spicy tuna roll - you can ask for a replacement, like my friend did, but it'll cost you the evil eye from the waitress). I was pretty disappointed with the size of everything when I got my box (which I think was $12). Why did my miso soup strangely taste like vomit? Well I ate it anyway because I was starving and I hate wasting food. The salmon was significantly larger than my friend who ordered the same. Also it tasted pretty much like it came from Costco's freezer section. Actually, maybe a little worse. The sauce didn't help to soften the fish's rubbery consistency. And the salad leaves got lost under the bath of mayo/dressing concoction. Tuna rolls were really small and there were only 4-5 of them. The fried covering around the nori was chewy and the whole thing was just bland. The only thing that was plentiful was rice...and I could have stayed home to eat that. The service was okay but the food really didn't help the situation. I know I really ripped the place but it's just the facts...

Sweet Ginger is a pleasant restaurant. The sushi was okay. One issue: there was a fly that landed on fish and the chef didn't mind. Eew!!!!!! Could've been a magot!! The people are very quiet and don't really talk.

  • Rachel B.

I've been to this restaurant a handful of times. Good fresh fish, the prices are not outrageous, and it's not crowded like Sushi Ran down the street. However, each time I go here I remark that a lot of time seems to elapse between placing the order and food appearing on the table. Some of their daily special rolls are tasty, though...like the asparagus and albacore, or the shrimp and mango, or the tuna with garlic (caution: only order this one if you loooove garlic!). Overall, the place is friendly and casual. I will return, but I must remember to order a miso soup to help tide me over. It's not a place to grab a quick bite before a movie; settle in and stay awhile.

Although the quality of the fish at Sweet Ginger is not quite on par with many of the upper scale sushi restaurants around Marin, decent prices and a simplicity to the dining experience make this an attractive option if you are in the mood for an easy meal without the hassle. Of the sushi I recommend the Caledonia roll- a makizushi of sake, unagi, and avocado. Most of the maki rolls I have had here have been good, as have the nigiri. The udon is a safe bet. Unfortunately I can't really recommend anything cooked from the kitchen, as most of the dishes I have ordered that were cooked have been sub par.

    (4)
  • Smoothie M.

Very low key place. It's hard to compare to Sushi Ran in any way. Go there when you just want some sushi and want to get in and out pretty quickly--it never seems to be busy. Last time the sushi rolls seemed a bit messy . . . they could do better on that account. If you love Sushi Ran, you probably won't like this place.

...born and raised in Sausalito, always appreciative of culinary additions to my lovely home...I am quite surprised at the Yelp response to Sweet Ginger...everytime I've been there the staff has been extremely curteous and the sashimi MAGNIFICENT! I urge you all to give this place a shot...and to dismiss the opinions of anyone who goes to a sushi restaurant to order a Bento Box!!

  • Mark K.

This place has some of the best -cold- sushi around. The caledonia roll is one of the best rolls I've had in a while, and everything else that we've gotten cold is wonderful as well. The Miso is also fantastic. The bad side is that their cooked food & rolls are worse than average. We've been there several times and are consistently disappointed by anything that comes from the kitchen. If, however, you're in the mood for normal sushi, this place is quite wonderful, and definitely worth the visit.

  • Jennifer M.

Maybe I've drunk the sushi ran koolaid. But I was really disappointed by the meal at Sweet Ginger. Primarily because sushi ran doesn't deliver and I've been jonesing for a low-buck, sushi delivery place ever since I left Chicago this summer. Unfortunately I don't think Sweet Ginger fills that roll. We had an assortment of different rolls and they were all just kind of bleh. Some of the nigiri pieces also tasted a little too fishy.

I love this place... the pretentious reviews below.... wow. Its a small sushi house. My husband and I visit regularly.... good for take out & the staff has always been friendly too us. Maybe if you go in without an attitude you might get treated better?

  • Sam W.

truly, if you are looking for a low key place, with fresh and excellent sushi, hit this place up. the service was great and the garlic albacore is amazing!

    (5)
  • Lauren J.

Friendly waiter and sushi chef make up for somewhat slow service and poorly rolled sushi made with medium-grain brown rice that doesn't stick or hold very well. Fish quality was fine, and more enjoyable in the nigiri sushi. but as is said in other reviews, the knife skills aren't here either. Fresh ingredients are the key, though, and this place has them. Very nice green tea as well with free refills.

Usually just order sushi to go but finally had dinner a few weeks ago. Small, clean restaurant with great variety of rolls. My only complaint is the bathroom...in the back and have to wait in the kitchen area if there is a line.

I was really hoping to enjoy my lunch on this rainy December day. Ordered the Bento Box ($12): Chicken Teriyaki, Sashimi (two pieces of tuna and salmon), Rice, Salad, and Soup. The Chicken was chewy (most likely microwaved) and sitting on top of some extremely gooey teriyaki sauce. The sashimi was decent, although more fatty than I've had elsewhere. The dressing on the salad was mostly mayonaise with a hint of ginger and maybe some other flavor. The highlights, unfortunately, were the White Rice and the Miso Soup. To add to my disappointment were the assortment of Christmas songs being piped in throughtout the Japanese restuarant (jingle bells, frosty, santa something, etc). I usually enjoy the soothing music that many traditional japanese restaurants play, which was nowhere to be found here. I hate to say it, but, there is really no reason I'd ever go here again since Sushi Ran is just a few blocks down the street...

ok, I admit it, I am a sushi addict. I seriously could live off it everyday! So when someone tells me I HAVE to go try a great sushi place, I'm off running. Sadly, I have no idea what they were thinking! My rolls fell apart, the fish was not that fresh and I felt like I was in a cafeteria somewhere. The scallop special was floating in "butter" and not very tasty. The ginger was like the kind you get in supermarket sushi trays, and poor. I won't go back.

Wow, all these negative reviews! I guess I don't know sushi. I really don't care, I love the food at Sweet Ginger. We usually get it to go.

I live right up the street from Sweet Ginger and absolutely love it. The restaurant is consistent with both service and freshness. It's easy to get in and out of, contrary to its same street competitor and also inventive and healthy in a simple way. If you're looking for a nice place to dine in peace and a hot cup of green tea, go here.

I'm surprised at some of these awful reviews. I just found this place recently and have really liked the dishes I've had. I have only had a few things, no hot dishes. Specifically the hawaiian poki and spicy sashimi appetizers have been delicious and come in a good sized portion. I've gone back just for those two dishes (plenty for a meal) and they are consistently quite delicious. I lopped off one star because there really is no atmosphere.

Quite nice. The food is fresh and well put together. I have been here many tines and they are consistently good. I rarely have had the sushi, but the cooked dishes are inventive and good. I especially like the salmon over garlic soba and sprouts. Today I enjoyed the oyako-don. It was a pleasant surprise to have well-flavored miso come with it, as at most restaurants the don-buri doesn't come with miso unless ordered separately.

Absolutely disgusting. Run by those who pretend to know how to make sushi, though they know just as much as I know how to make love to an iguana. The rice is gooey and slimy, and the fish... I thought it was lutefisk. The rolls were innundated in mayonnaise, and the ginger is straight out of the gallon-sized jar. Avoid at all cost, even if Sushi Ran down the street is full. There are good reasons other places are full, and this place isn't.

Ever since the chinese took over and the fantastic Japanese staff has been kicked out, the food has degraded. The waitress is also rude. It is a shame to see another great thing destroyed.

the wife was dying for sushi and had a flyer touting sweet ginger...so we drove over from mill valley to give it a try. Liked the name and fiqured it had to be good...Competing with Sushi Ram.which is just down the block.. Wrong. I don't cook and could make sushi that good..wifes dragon roll was puny, shrunken and overpriced for what you get.. in fact had to go get a bag of potato chips ( which i almost never eat) after dinner to awaken my tast buds because nothing i ate had any taste. even the wasabi had no kick." Worst dish was what they called " tempura udon soup, which looked, smelled, and tasted like napa cabbage, noodle, flavorless vegetable soup that it was. I mean it had nothing in common with tempura udon soup except the bad breaded fried shrimps. It was a laughable experience. ...service was okay though and they were friendly with good attitude.... but a japanese sushi restaurant it is not...just a family chinese restaurant with a japanese american menu that also sells sushi. The place is clean though and has easy parking......but the finale was GROSS As we paid the check, the waitress picked up one of the warmed hand towels they provide and cleaned the table off with it. Not knowing weather we had cleaned our hands with it or not. Obviously.. We aren't going back but if you want to try it maybe some of their other dishes are ok. We Only had 3 dishes, california roll, tempura udon soup and dragon roll so can't comment on the rest of the menu. My wife and I argued for a half hour over who was to blame for choosing to go their. I finally admitted it was the name that got me.

I love this cozy Lito spot! The miso is my favorite, and the sushi is made fresh as you order! It's a casual spot with a local feel and beautiful food at an affordable price! You can't go wrong! And they deliver!

Average food, environment and service. Stop over in Sausalito to grab some dinner before heading down south. Was surprised to find many empty parking lots in the downtown area on a Sunday evening. The shop was rather empty, there was just two other tables occupied and it was dinner time. Usually the no. of patrons serves as a good estimate on your dining experience. We ordered a Dragon roll, ume shiso sushi and a Tokyo style ramen. Along with two hot green tea, the meal cost around $40. The Dragon toll and ume shiso sushi was yummy though they could really work on their presentation. The whole presentation was untidy and the sushi weren't "glued" well together. Also, the Dragon roll was tiny. The smallest sushi rolls I ever had so far in SF! The Tokyo Style Ramen was a huge disappointment. The chashu pork tasted weird and looks artificial. Fish cakes taste like plastic. The broth and noodles tasted bland. An average place to visit if you are craving for sushi and sushi only. Do not recommend their noodles at all.

There's Sushi Ran down the road. If you head that way you will return with a hole in your wallet. If on the other hand you just really want some sushi (always fresh) without breaking the bank, walk on over to Sweet Ginger. Hold your head up and strut like a peacock if you must. There's nothing to be shy about. I think the joint is family owned. The sushi chef works efficiently and tirelessly. Somehow he manages to always smile. My Japanese is nil but I always bow when I enter and leave. He returns the exchange quiet amicably. Last night we had the Rainbow Roll in addition to the usual suspects: California, Caledonia, spicy tuna, sea weed salad and miso. I should backtrack and say "last night we inhaled" the sushi. Which is more accurate since that's what happened. There was a cop on a date sitting behind us. He arrived with his date by way of squad car. Not a bad way to pick up someone for dinner (as long as you're not being arrested afterwards). We come here every 7-10 days. For 4 sushi rolls, a couple of appetizers and saki the total is around 50 bucks. That's pretty damn good in this neck of the woods.

I hate giving bad reviews. Like hate it. And it takes a lot for me to review an establishment negatively but Sweet Ginger done pissed me off tonight. I have ordered the same thing from them always, a crunchy, spicy tuna roll, my own roll that I special order and some gyoza. I order again tonight. There was an issue that I hadn't hit their minimum of $25, ok that's weird because its never happened...but no big deal, I added more on to the order to hit the delivery minumum. We received our food and opened it up and we didn't recognize a single thing. The fish was mushy and tasted so overly fishy that we spit it out. (and threw it all away). I have no idea what they sent us but it was recognizable. I called to discuss with them and they said this is what I ordered (however, he kept mentioning words that I had no idea even meant so I know I didn't order that). Anyway, after going back and forth for a few minutes and coming to no resolution except him saying that I ordered this, I decided to hang up and be done with Sweet Ginger. If only he would have talked with me a bit more perhaps we could have saved this sweet friendship. Good bye sweet ginger...

Came here with my little person for lunch. It was a weekday and the place was pretty empty, but my little person really thought we should give it a try. All I can say is that it's nothing to go crazy for, but if you're looking for just the basics, I guess it's ok.

Horrible experience. The service is terrible, my group of 7 was waiting for 25 minutes just to get greeted and order drinks. The sushi isn't the worst I've ever had but very overpriced for very small, mediocre portions. I could get better sushi at a convenient store.

Food is good price is a little high. And no refills on drinks thumbs down for that. sitting here very thirsty. Need some improvements in customer service. But this place is nice and relaxing.

My husband and I live in Sausalito and have been here about a half dozen times in the last year, so I'm disappointed to see so many poor reviews. This is a neighborhood sushi joint, not meant to be like a gourmet sushi ran. The selections are pretty basic but you'll find all of the traditional rolls. We've experienced consistently good sushi. Good, but not drive out-of-your-way to eat here amazing--just to be specific. Probably at most, one time I had fish that was a little too fishy tasting. And maybe the service was very slow once, but otherwise they are always pretty attentive. In general, I'm still adjusting to how much more restaurants charge in the Bay Area vs. Seattle, so if Sweet Ginger wanted to lower their prices I would be OK with it. Otherwise, until we get sick, we'll be going back....

Very good food. Very nice people. I come here when I'm too tired to cook. Red sun roll and Salmon with soba noodles is the best. Thank you for your great service!

I have been coming to this great little restaurant for years. I love the Bento box lunch choices which are very reasonable. The tempura is light and crispy .. great miso soup... all though the food choices are very fresh. I would eat lunch here every other day if it was closer to me.

I really like Sweet Ginger as a mellow weeknight spot. We tend to go every couple weeks for fresh, basic, yummy sushi. On busier nights, it seems they don't have extra employees to deal with the bustle. Valentine's day, they were exceptionally busy, and exceptionally slow, but now we just know to only go when the place looks empty. Overall, though, it's still our favorite local spot, and we'll continue to enjoy it!

Atrocious lack of service and the food made me sick. We made a reservation and when we arrived the host seemed to have no recollection that we made a reservation but seated us. The place was about 50% full. We ordered promptly and then shortly after heard the complaints around us from other guests about "where's my dinner, I've been waiting an hour." My appetizer arrived after one hour, then my friend's arrived 30 minutes later and so on. We never ate together as the service was spaced out. The cooks seemed to be fulfilling take out orders ahead of the seated guests. This place has no clue about customer service. At one point the waiter said "everyone is waiting 2 hours" so I asked why did you grant a reservation? Incredibly rude. I guess they get away with it because of the visitors to Sausalito? The food tasted fine, but after becoming ill a few hours later I'd say stay away from this place.

3 hours waiting for delivery. I called back each hour and they told me the driver was on the way. After 2.5 hours I asked to speak with the manager/owner. When she came on, she rudely asked what I wanted. After I explained I'd been waiting 2.5 hours she simply said they were busy. Then she told me it would be here within 30 minutes. 30 minutes passed so I called back and cancelled the order. They of course said it was on the way, but I cancelled anyway. I used to order from them once every week or two. Not any more.

If Sushi Ran wasn't just one block away, I would probably go here a few times rather than just twice and never again. Food is just ok. Sushi is very basic stuff. Prices average - just a very small step down from Sushi Ran (maybe 5-10%) and with a few drinks it all costs about the same. Quality is a big step down. I probably am not alone in my opinion because this place is absolutely empty the 2 times I've been here and whenever I pass by. Plus - the service is very friendly and neighborhoody. Another plus, it's very easy to get a table or spot at the bar and there's definitely no problem with noise.

My daughter literally got sick and threw up by the library! She had two kinds of spicy tuna roll. One roll was fried. Omg. The fried roll tasted like spam in a tuna can. Super dry and over fried. The roll tasted just awful. Cat food would taste better. If you look at the reviews--it is a total mixed bag. I have been here before and it was "okay." We came here because our regular place was so full. This place was just the very worst. We sent the roll back. I think they should have comped us. Said they were sorry! The way they handled it was awful. My daughter literally got sick. Never again!

Not impressed.....ordered California Roll, which fell apart....and simple dish....Chicken Teriyaki....how can you go wrong with that ? Chicken was dry and the teriyaki had no flavor at all ! It was terrible, the worst I have ever eaten. I couldn't finish it. Will NEVER go back again. I know they overheard me saying how bad it was but no one asked if they could do anything about it. And there were only us and another 2 people at another table in the restaurant. Very disappointing !!

We came here about 5-6 times, since we lived close by. Its a cheaper alternative to Sushi Ran Down the street. It's not spectacular but decent and consistent. Inexpensive.

Saturday night, plenty of tables. Chef's special roll of Sea Bream for $6.oo was excellent, as was the dragon roll at $15.oo... Parking was convenient and deserves more clients... Can't understand why people are willing to stand in line at Sushi Ran, when this place has tables and lower prices..

Solid choice - good food, friendly service, no waiting. Atmosphere was average, good location, food was very tasty but nothing that particularly stood out. We will be back for the friendly service.
