I have tasted many Sichuan restaurants in tri-city, Milpitas area, but this is clearly the best, most authentic of them all. Lots of so call Sichuan restaurants are heavily focused on spiciness, not much on the flavour of Sichuan-pepper,but this place balanced really lovely on the two different spices. Strongly recommend for people who love the tongue numbing effect from Sichuan-pepper. 這家真的是超好吃的川菜館。絕對比山城私房菜,巴山蜀水好吃多了。

The food wasn't very presentable. But the spicy crab was delicious. The customer service there SUCKS! After paying for the bill. I was packing up my food to take it to go and one of the waitress came up and took the bill. A second later another waitress brought the bill back and demanded for a tip and threw the bill on the table. I was like FIRST, I wasn't done with the bill, second, the other waitress took it and I was going to leave tips in cash. The FUCK! Later on, a middle age man came up to me and my boyfriend and apologize for the other girls being rude to us and demanding us for tips. I swear if it wasn't for that man, I wouldn't of even tip her 15%. I swear, who eats $100 worth of stuff and not leave a tip. -.-

Have been here several times and most of the dishes are tasted pretty decent and provided in good portions. What I like is shredded pork with spicy garlic, Mongolia beef and general Taos chicken. You can tell different taste while having their spicy dishes; not like other spicy Chinese food restaurant, you only feel hot and spicy with buring inside your mouth. Overall, it's nice to come while I feel like to have some quick and good Chinese food. Also, the price is very reasonable, especially during lunch time. It will be 5 star if they can make the interior cleaner and cooler with the AC.

Fried fish is good, so does the rice noodle. I tried the Sichuan cold noodle and other dishes last time, but not so much impressed

Cute little restaurant for an easy and fast meal. Great fit out. Makes you feel as though you're in China. Lamb skewers are amuse if you like spicy food and lamb!

I'm not sure what people were saying about the service, but it was fine for me. At an authentic Chinese restaurant, I don't expect courteous and attentive service nor do I ever receive it. Service at Newark cafe was definitely adequate and our dishes came out relatively fast. I ordered the fried pork intestine with chilis. It was absolutely delicious. I can empathize with other fellow yelpers regarding the greasiness of the dishes. While there was oil seeping through the holes of the basket of my fried pork intestine, it was still absolutely delicious. It was like chewy pork rinds with the perfect amount of spice for my taste. I also had the fish fillet in chili oil. The fish was tender and the chili oil wasn't too overpowering. Pro-tip: they don't split the bill between multiple cards so bring your cash or venmo in advance.

So my coworkers and I went hiking one morning, & we got lunch following. We never eat Chinese food apparently (I just started at this job!) so our Chinese coworkers were like, K. It's our turn. We get to choose this time. And WE. ARE. HAVING. CHINESE. & not that Panda Express, white wash, Mandarin or Cantonese shit. No. We are talking about real folk people, traditional countryland food. :D I was all down for it. I was already expecting Szechuan style. BRING IT ON. Luhh that shiet. Ok ok, so.. brace yourselves if you come here. It's no lie when their foods are labeled spicy & numbing. NUMBING. So spicy, it numbs your mouth. BUT FEAR NOT, YOU FOODHEADS. It's a bearable spice. & the numbness? Adds character. :D Makes the food even better. My favorite dish was the fried pork intestines. See, that's already a fave dish of mine. But here, they serve it with just red hot chili peppers. Literally looks like that's what you're getting.. just a basket of peppers. But BOMBDELICIOSO. Pretty much what I'd come back for. Actually salivating thinking about it. lol. Didn't care much for the other foods because I was so engrossed with the intestines, I won't lie. But the hot & sour soup.. guys. I kid you not, SO. SPICY. I died for a little bit. Would come back here and try other dishes in a heartbeat. (Perhaps this weekend. :D)

Great idea, but poor execution. 15 dollars for half a chicken that is actually closer to a third of a chicken? 11 dollars for a plate of vegetable that barely covers the middle of a plate? And two dollars per tiny bowl of rice and no pot option? Unless I were in the middle of a remote location where asians were rare and importing costs high, like say, Antarctica, then sure I can justify paying so much for so little. Sadly, even with the rather striking and attractive decor, it was a disappointing meal. That's what I get for not checking Yelp first to check beforehand. This is one place I won't be coming back to anytime in the near future.

Spicy frog leg is really nice! Compare to spicy frog leg, the taste of grilled fish is not strong enough. But it might suitable for yelpers who don't like strong flavors.

This place is a waste of your time and your money. First of all, the staff here is rude, inattentive, and just unpleasant in general. When they brought us the food, they just kind of threw it on the edge of the table and left without saying a word. When I asked for rice, the waiter acted as if I asked him to kill a puppy or something. As if asking him to do his job was such an inconvenience. As for the food, I'd rather be stranded on an island and force fed celery and Brussels Sprouts than eat their food again. Maybe it's because we didn't order the super spicy dishes, but the food was just utter crap. There is no real flavor because everything is just drenched in salt and oil. If I took their food and ran it under a faucet, the water would be probably saltier than the Dead Sea. tl;dr: Their food was utter crap. No offense to crap. Lastly their menu is misleading. As you can see from the photos, the menu for their Salt And Pepper Prawns clearly shows the already peeled jumbo prawns. But the dish that we got (in addition to being covered in salt) had shrimp that was the unpeeled, with head, tails, and poop still attached. This may not be a big deal to some people, but I highly dislike it when their menu looks completely different from the food served. Also, the menu showed there were little red chunks of pepper, but the picture of the actual food had none of that. As usual, when I brought this up with the waitress, she brushed me off and said the picture is only a "reference." Well, it helps if the reference resembles the dish I'll be served instead of something completely different. I swear, I wouldn't mind standing outside the restaurant telling people to go somewhere else if I had the time. This place brings sucks to a whole new level.

I'm not big on spicy food, but since my husband is Taiwanese, he pretty much drinks chili oil out of a bottle if he can. We walked in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The place wasn't packed or full. They were slow to seat us. We were in the neighborhood to get some bread next door and thought we check this place out. There are none spicy dishes. My daughter and I shared a bowl of noodles and it was tasty. Even though it wasn't suppose to be spicy, it was still very peppery. Nothing that we couldn't handle. My daughter loved it. We barely finished the bowl. It was big. A deep bowl. We also ordered the cold tofu with preserved eggs. Very refreshing. I know, how could spicy be refreshing? Well, when you heat up eating all this spicy and hot food, having some cold tofu that's been sitting in chili oil is actually really soothing. We got the onion pancake. I like how thin it is. Crispy on one side yet still chewy. Yum. The wonton was nothing special. I was hoping that it be sitting in some sort of satay-ish chili oil. Nope. Just plain ol wonton soup with tablespoons of chili oil. Good but not worth re-ordering. We kept seeing people order the catfish dish that sits on top of a hot tray over the burner. Yes, we need to try that next time when we have a bigger party.

This sichuan style restaurant is the best sichuan style Chinese restaurant in the bay area. My wife and I have tried many sichuan style restaurants in the bay area and this is the most authentic one, especially their BBQ fish(kao yu) on the big plate and spicy boiling fish because they use fresh and live fish and it makes a huge difference for the taste. Just be alert, if you don't like sichuan style, which is heavily in red pepper(chili) oil, you won't like it and don't go. If you do appreciate sichuan style, it's the best place to go.

My first experience at Newark Cafe wasn't a good one. My coworker came up with the bright idea of going to eat Schezuan on a 100 degree day. Not only was it hot outside, but there was no AC inside. Here we were eating spicy spicy food on the hottest day of summer. Genius! I'm not sure if it was the items that my coworker ordered, but I really didn't like anything besides one of the veggie appetizers that had chilled enoki mushrooms. The meat dishes were incredibly fatty and greasy. There was a soup which had the fattiest brisket soaking in a thick layer of grease. The stir fry beef dish also was composed of fatty meat cooked in lots of chili oil. The spicy duck dish had mostly bones and hardly any meat. There were a ton of jalepenos in there which I didn't mind, but where was the duck meat? The last dish was chicken breast over soba noodles. The chicken breast was in cubes but had a weird texture as if it had been over soaked in baking powder. I have had Schezuan cuisine before while I was in China and enjoyed it very much. The Newark Cafe just didn't do it for me that day. They have a large menu and I probably would have chosen some other dishes if I were to order. However, I think the prices reflect the quality as it was very inexpensive. For the amount of food we ordered and had about half left over, it was a good deal. Too bad I didn't like it. Total tab including tax and tip for 5 people was $55. On the upside, the restaurant itself was inviting and clean. The service was good. I just do not recommend eating there on a hot day bc they do not have any air conditioning. Plenty of parking is available. Location is in the same plaza as 99 Ranch Market. Contrary to another yelper's tip, it is not cash only. They do accept plastic.

The service here was way too slow. People were constantly trying to get the attention of the workers, we had to ask for water and rice twice before they bothered remembering to bring it over to us. The food was okay, it was definitely spicy, but pretty oily.

  • Mark M.

Eh. Here is all you need to know. They have a FANTASTIC chili oil here. If you are a fan of how difficult it is to make a good chili oil, you need to at least come here to try out their spicy dishes and have a whiff and taste of their oil. Sadly however, everything else is just very average. Their dishes are just not as flavorful as I had hoped, although again, their flavor of their chills are just great. No really - order something, and taste the chills, and then taste the sauce. You too would be like, wtf???! The bi-polar quality control was quite mind-boggling. I just can't figure out how their chilis can be done so well, but their dishes so poorly.

Service is fine, server does care about your requests, once you want something, they will bring it out immediately. I came there usually during lunch time. Pros: price (cheap, lunch special is under 8 bucks) Food taste (very spicy and tasty, food is same as menu states) Cons: Oily, Too oily!!!! MSG added, feel very thirsty afterwards If you want to eat healthy, this place is not a good choice

Restaurant was packed. I ordered a noodle soup and noodle soup don't come with a free sweat and sour soup and garlic bread. I asked the manager and he was nice enough to give me it for free. The garlic bread was a bit soggy. Price was cheap

Well, I'd give their food for 5 stars! Love, love, love their food! The whole fish dish is definitely their first choice! All food here is so Chinese local food, unlike Panda Express or other American Chinese food. Sometimes the waitress there is a bit not kind, even though they work hard. They seem they don't have time to listen to you and look very impatiently! The suggestion is that they should have a receptionist or hire one to two more servers.

I have always like this place, is my favorite place for Szechuan style food, first of all, DO NOT expect a chinese restaurant to have good service, this is just like other chinese restaurant, so if you want high quality service, go some where else. So I order the fish fillet in flaming oil, lamb skewers, spicy vermicelli with pork intestine, cucumber salad, they are all very good, the fish was a bomb, the lamb was very tender. I'm a usual customer here, they have always do a good job.

RUDE!!! I gave it a low rating because of the service. Server (young girl) did not listen to anything I said, kept cutting me off, and rushed me even though I was the ONLY one in the restaurant. Went to pay with a card & was told I had to purchase min. of $30.00. Wasn't a language barrier as her English was perfect; she just had poor manners. There are way too many good Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area to waste my time on a business that treats you like you have just inconvenienced them by patronizing their establishment. Food: ok, a little oily but not bad. Prices: reasonable. Food selection: good. Service POOR.

The hot pot was cold...and the other dishes came out cold as well. They are obviously understaffed and from the look of things, couldn't care less. Taste-wise, this gets 2 stars. The tofu was just bland and the chili oil hot pot was underwhelming. We also got the lamb skewers...another mistake. 50% fat and unevenly salted. $2.50 for a small cup of iced plum tea as well, btw. Never coming back.

Love it. I've never been to China but I'm guessing this is the real deal. The prices are awesome! The portions are awesome. Service is good for this type of restaurant. This will be one of my new spots.

"A-OK" pretty much sums up my experience at Newark Cafe. Service was okay, food was okay, and prices were okay. Nothing really stood out to me, with the exception of one of maybe one of the dishes. I've heard that lines here can be really long, but that wasn't the case on the Sunday afternoon my parents and I stopped by for a late lunch. We were seated right away, and I immediately noticed that the plating and utensils were really dark ( yelp.com/biz_photos/newa… ). The interior is decently clean, with pretty standard tables and lighting. Per most Chinese restaurants, service was a little lacking and rushed. They weren't rude or mean, but a little inattentive and somewhat cold. Not a big deal, but I can see how it could get worse during rush hours. Twice-cooked pork belly stirfried with bean curd, bell peppers, and onions: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/newa… ) This was a dish recommended to us by our waitress because she said she really enjoyed it. She promised that the meat was fresh and had just been made that morning. My mom has a very sensitive palate to meat that has been in the refrigerator because she says that it has an aftertaste, so we were all happy to hear that the meat was supposedly fresh. When the dish came, the expression on my mom's face after her first bite was enough for me to know that the meat definitely wasn't fresh. It wasn't necessarily bad, but it had that refrigerated, almost chalky aftertaste. There were also lots of filler ingredients in the dish, such as the dried bean curd and some dried radish strips. They weren't bad, but curious. Stir-fried A lettuce with garlic: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/newa… ) I love A lettuce, and it's been a while since I've had it because I don't think it's in season. The cook on this dish was very mediocre; some liquid had seeped out of the vegetables after they were cooked all the way through, which is a telling sign that they were left in the wok a tad too long. This dish wasn't bad, but it tasted like I had made it at home.. which isn't really a compliment. Stir-fried chicken palms with cucumber, celery, and bell peppers: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/newa… ) This was probably my favorite dish out of the four, and it was just because of the chicken palms. They were flavorful, but a little undercooked. Usually boiled or steamed chicken feet is gelatinous and very soft, but these either didn't get cooked for long enough or weren't cooked prior to being tossed into the stir-fry, so they were still pretty chewy and sinewy. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a little hard to chew. The pairing with the cucumber, celery, and bell peppers was fine, except that the cucumber was overcooked so that it was a little soggy and watery. The presentation of this dish was cute, as it was loaded into a wooden boat set atop a plate. There is also a spicy variation, so if you're into spicy food, I would probably opt for that one. Stir-fried lotus root cubes: ( yelp.com/biz_photos/newa… ) I liked the light flavors in this dish, but the lotus roots were cut a little too big so that they were undercooked. I would suggest that these just be cut smaller so they're easier to eat as well. I think this place has only been open about six months or so, so maybe some of the cooks are still working out kinks to some of the dishes. The level of proficiency with a wok seemed just okay to me, and I'm not sure I will be back.

ZERO STARS IF I COULD....I've dined at 100s of restaurants, and this place is a disgrace to the restaurant industry on so many levels. #1 Their signature catfish dish was unique but the compliments end there. Literally! Our fish was so small that it took up less than a quarter of the plate. They tried to cover it up with a lot peppers but it wasn't fooling anyone. They then put some pieces of the scrap fish meat to "compensate" for it. Yuck! We complained to 3 people who just brushed us off. The management finally agreed to give us a TWO dollar discount...wow.... #2 There was no service after what happened above. We ordered a noodle dish to compensate but we never heard the order ever being put in. We waited for 20 minutes, and when asked, the waitress sarcastically stated " the noodles are still boiling"....really?! She rolls her eyes, screams at the kitchen, and brings out our dish slathered with SALT! We all try to eat some, and we all CHOKE on it. One of the other waitress agrees to cancel the dish, but then returns and forces us to return everything from our own plates and have it "exchanged". The dish comes out a minute later, and of course, we don't dare eat it. I won't allege to what happened to it. #3 I'm fuming at this point, and of course I'm not going to leave any significant tip. The waiter has the nerve to call me out in front of the whole table and restaurant. OMG....who does that....what a low move... I decided to be a bigger man and gave more....but a warning to all...DO NOT EAT HERE!!!

Camer here for lunch recently and ordered a Szechuan style beef noodle. It was decent and actually tasted like Szechuan food which is a big plus as I'm a huge fan of all food Szechuan and was raised with it. It would be better if they added more stuff in the dish, there were barely any vegetables and beef. Yes it was cheap $5.99 for the noodles but I surely won't mind paying extra bucks if they could put more stuff in it.

So-so. The restaurant's interior looks nice--cute little booths with bamboo screens, flowers in glass orbs hanging from the ceiling, a shiny pagoda roof over the cash register/kitchen area. But it was very cold. 50°? No dish was memorable, and we ordered a variety--four spicy and three non-spice--lamb skewers, ribs, duck, veggies, fish, green onion pancakes, liang fen. Every dish was dripping in oil. I was dizzy after a few bites. Maybe it was what we ordered, but to our surprise, the portions were very small...especially given the price. And misleading pictures. Good ambience + kitschy presentation (boat shaped dishes, bamboo plates) + $kimpy portions = Modern-Authentic-Chinese food? Coming from a family of normal/underweight Chinese people, we ordered seven dishes for seven people and there were no leftovers. We went next door to 85° and filled up with bread :)

  • Vivian L.

My group & I came here just in time when this place opened for lunch service; around 11am. First time here and I think the place looks nice. There are booths set up on the side, and tables spread out in the middle. We chose sat on the booth side, 'cause it's nice and cozy. It even has a "food heater"/(or whatever it may be called...) as part of the table, since it's a bbq place after all, too. The server that helped my group and I was pretty knowledgeable about questions I had from the menu. My group and I ended up ordering from the lunch special: the "numbing noddle" dish (which has the perfect amount of spiceness), and the fish fillet with wine sauce over rice.( I was glad that the rice was placed on the side.) The fish fillet dish also had green & red bell peppers with it. Overall, the food was tasty, and definitely affordable. I liked the numbing noodle the best. I would recommend to come to this place if you like bbq and/or spicy food. And it's right next to 85 degree bakery. So, you can totally get coffee and/or bakery items next door. Lol!

I honestly wish I could give them no stars. At the beginning, my friends and I were seated promptly, and I felt that the restaurant had a decent atmosphere. From the start of our visit, we were already being quickly rushed, and they weren't even closing for another hour. We ordered quickly, and after that, it took a while for us to get our food. Finally after we got our food, we took a couple of bites and the waiter brings us the check. I don't really like getting my bill so quickly, and I also don't like it face up in the middle of our food. I turn it over, continue to eat, and I see him nearing our table. He then turns the check back over and demands that we pay first before we continue to eat. So then we pay, and after we take our change, we still want to continue eating. We take a couple more bites and then he interjects again and demands us for tip. My friend give him $1 because we felt the customer service was awful! He comes back and looks at the tip and says he can't accept that. We put $3 on, and then the whole staff is sitting at a table, eating, texting, and chatting. My friend tries to wave them down because she needed a fork and they forgot one of her orders. They took forever to give it to her, and when she got her order, we felt like they did something terrible to it because they were watching our table and laughing at us. This pushes it, so we didn't even get to finish half our food because we completely lost our appetite. Let alone we didn't touch that other order. We left and I took all the tip back because they didn't even deserve a penny. This is the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. The food was decent, and so were the prices, but the staff just ruined it for me. I would've tipped them $5 gladly as well have come back if they treated us hospitably. But now I will never set foot in that place again.

This review is dedicated to this one signature dish they have on the menu: "Boiled fish in house sauce". All I gotta to say is: IT'S SO NASTY! The dish was served quick after ordered. But in the pot there are a lot of various identifiable and unidentifiable parts of fish, such as tail, fin, and other some "joints" of fish. It's SO GROSS I don't even want to think about what those parts are. These strange shaped fish parts made it VERY difficult to eat!! The worst part is that the fish was undercooked and every bite has that nasty fishy smell. EWWWWW...... I feel ripped off by paying $24.95 for that!!! I WANT MY $$ BACK!!!!!!

Came here to eat because I had heard so much about this place. This place is a Cantonese style restaurant very similar to Good Neighbor Restaurant. They have 3 dishes for $19.99 and if you pick a meat dish it is .50 cents extra. It comes with rice, and soup. I believe it comes with a free drink of your choice also. The lunch menu is at $5 or $6 combo dish. I decided also to order watermelon juice. The watermelon juice is very good. It tasted very organic without any extra sugar added to it. The portions are huge at this place. I had the chicken with string beans, seafood tofu clay pot, scrambled egg with shrimp, pork chop with onion, and shrimp with celery. Needless to say, I had a lot of extra food to take home. Which is nice because it will last me for a couple of days. The bad thing there is not customer service. You have to flag them down to take your order. They never come back to refill your drink. They really just drop off the food and go. When I was done I walked up and asked for the check, a few to-go boxes and I paid. Also, they only take cash. So bring cash! This is typical for some Chinese restaurants so I did not expect much in the customer service category. I like this place because the portions are big and it is a good price point, and the dishes were pretty tasty.

Prior to this place changing to serving spicy cuisine, it was a HK cafe. For a HK cafe, this place was dead but my mom insisted to order a couple dishes for my dad's dinner here. While waiting for the food, all I can think about is how dirty and outdated this place is. I wouldn't want to eat anything here but the food isn't for me. However, I did order a watermelon juice with pearls from here. It was ok. I never came back since then.

Booooo this place sucks :( My friend and I ordered: 1. House Special Fried Rice - This was pretty good, but you can see the oil reflecting from the lights. It's pretty much fried rice with shrimp, beef, pork, and chicken 2. Sesame Chicken - Huh? This tastes nothing like any sesame chicken I've had before. More like Orange chicken with sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Too salty too! 3. Beef Pancake Roll (Forgot the exact name; it was an appetizer) - Was expecting this dish to be hot but it's a cold dish :( . It's pretty much beef with hoison sauce, onions, wrapped in a chinese pancake. Comes in like 6 pieces which is good, but the taste is a 5/10 .. pretty boring Would not come here again. But at least 85C is in the same plaza!

The battle for HK café supremacy in the Tri-Cities area has been heating up as of late. However, try as they may, none of these valiant upstarts (most not even worth mentioning) has been able to put a dent in the armor of the reigning king of these parts, Venus Café ( yelp.com/biz/venus-baker… ). Lo and behold, another brave opponent has stepped into the fray, this one bold (or naive) enough to set up shop... right across the street. Newark Café takes this location near 99 Ranch that has seen a gamut of various restaurants come and go over the years. Do they finally have the winning formula not only to take on the juggernaut down the block, but simply just to stay in business, period? For starters, the Chinese name (Man Kee) and menu are very similar to D&A Café in SF ( yelp.com/biz/d-and-a-caf… ) and 8th Street Café (formerly D&A) in Oakland ( yelp.com/biz/8th-street-… ). Could they possibly be related? Although not known for the greatest of food, D&A has been a mainstay for many years, and name recognition alone could go a long way. Based on a quick lunch date with my mom on Wed, March 28, here are a few random thoughts: Food: The two items that we ordered were actually quite tasty! Mom had shrimp with lobster sauce over rice ( yelp.com/biz_photos/UrqC… ), which she found to be plenty delectable, with the right amount of juiciness, and an ample amount of shrimp. The two mounds of rice are served on a separate plate. This, along with many other items, can be found on the $5.50 menu. I, of course, tried my staple at HK cafés, baked pork chop over fried rice ( yelp.com/biz_photos/UrqC… ), which is part of their MWF lunch special (TTh is baked chicken steak over fried rice) for $4.75. To this day, none has been able to come even close to toppling the long reigning champion, the aforementioned Venus Café, but dare I say... this rendition puts up a pretty darn good fight! Although it does have bones, the pork chop is actually quite meaty, with a minimal amount of fat. The fried rice is also almost to Venusian levels, and the sauce is not too heavy. Overall, it tastes much cleaner as well. My mom also had the milk tea, and said it was pretty much on par with the rest. Service: Whoops...I almost forgot. This word should never be included in reviews of Chinese restaurants. Nary a smile or a thank you, but hey, they get the job done. Decor: A lot of furniture looks slightly worn, so I'm not sure if this was carried over from the previous restaurant. It is more likely imported from a different HK café, as the bench seating ( yelp.com/biz_photos/UrqC… ) is very typical of these establishments, and takes me back to the ones in the mother city, HK. There are four big flatscreens strewn about, some still with the plastic cover still intact, but they were not turned on when we visited. The rest of the facilities look like they were just inherited from the prior tenant with minimal remodeling. Of course, I have only been to Newark Café a single time, so I will definitely have to follow up with more from future visits. The bottom line is that even though Goliath is only a few short footsteps away, Newark Café has compelled me enough to stray away from there, and come back for more. Competition is always good, and it's refreshing to know that HK Café restauranteurs are finally realizing the potential in this area, which is a definite win for us all.

I am going to give this place 4 stars for now since it's new and I've only tried one dish. Newark Cafe used to serve more hk style food at extremely low prices. But now they have completely remodeled the inside and everything has more of a Szechuan flair. I was craving a bowl of hot spicy noodle so I decided to give this place a try. I walked in at around 2:45pm and didn't notice the sign that says they close at 3pm. They have that break in between lunch and dinner service like many other Asian restaurants. There were 3 other tables finishing up their meals but the waiters happily offered me a seat. He kinda rushed me into ordering which I could understand since they were setting a table up to eat their lunch. I ordered a bowl of spicy beef noodles. They had an option for which type of noodle I wanted but the waiter kinda recommended and chose for me. The noodle comes in a really big bowl and the first thing you notice is all the oil in the soup. And it's suppose to be like that. A whole layer of chili oil. It sure makes it hard to eat tho. I had a hard time eating the noodle because I tend to breathe in the oil and cause myself to go into a coughing frenzy. The noodles were pretty good, I think they should put bigger pieces of meat in the soup tho. The large bowl made it hard to find the meat at times. I did that thing where you take your spoon and chopsticks and run it through the soup to try to sift out some meat. I wish this dish was a little more of that Szechuan numbingly hot flavor tho. I could taste it a little bit but I wanted more. I see they have a 16.99 AYCE Hot Pot one of the pictures on Yelp. But I'm not sure if it applies to pre or post remodeling. If it's a Szechuan AYCE hot pot then I would be interested in trying.

Good quality of foods! Spicy or not spicy. Love their lunch special~ $5.95 - 6.50. A good list of choices! Highly recommended!

I think giving this place three stars is reasonable. We went to the 85 degree Bakery the other night and saw this restaurant with many people waiting in line so we decided to give it a try tonight. The food here was tasty serving with big portion. It's too much chili oil for me. The service wasn't very friendly. They served the four of us at a big table and when the smaller table was available they asked us to move and that was fine. Except they asked us to carry over the hot tea, plates, menu and everything else ourselves.

I give it one star because the food is EXTREMELY SALTY. I mean how can Garlic Chinese broccoli and tan-tan noodle be so salty? It is like eating salt directly and if that is not enough, eating salt and chillies together. The food quantity is good but the service is mediocre at the best which most Chinese restaurants nowadays are like that. Our friend recommended this restaurant but we wish they did not, such waste of time and money. We will keep going back to Little Sichuan next few doors until we can find a decent Sichuan restaurant.....

Review for lunch. This is one of those restaurants you eat at because you're hungry, cold, and waiting for new bread at 85C Bakery. It's not the type of place you would deliberately seek out for excellent food. That being said, my beef noodle soup was OK, but I've had better. The beef pancake was cold. However, I think it was meant to be served this way. And the sliced pig ear was drenched in way too much chili oil. Overall--not terrible but not a very memorable experience either.

Newark Cafe is the second chain from the Oakland 8th Street Cafe. To compare the two, I strongly believe the Oakland location is better. There are a lot more people because the prices are just RIDICULOUSLY cheap. This location is the same, too. The best deal they give is the Hai-nan Chicken with Rice. They give you like half of a chicken!!!!! That's amazing in terms of a meal. The Hainan rice is okay. It has a little bit of flavor. Also, for afternoon tea, drinks are like $1.55 in addition to meal. That's pretty good for lemon tea, milk tea, or whatever you like to drink. Think HK style cafe also has dishes to order from too! I've had them before and have gotten fried fish with sweet corn sauce, some dai dou miu which was also very good, and half of a chicken. Their chicken is very good! BUT BE WARNED. We are chinese people, therefore our chicken is not like chicken breast or what not. We eat the hardcore stuff so don't be shocked if you bite into bone. The prices here are SO CHEAP. Food is good but not as gourmet as you would pay. But who cares your meal will be like $5 LOL. :]

Bad service. The guy told me and my boyfriend to wait but serve the other 2 chinese groups that came after us. The most racist restaurant I've ever been to.

This place is disgusting and a WASTE OF MONEY. If I could give this place ZERO stars, I would. First of all, the plates and cups were filthy! When I asked for another cup, they forgot and I had to ask them again. The service there is unattentive and rude. The food was the worst part of it all!!! We ordered a soup and it was oily and EXTREMELY spicy!!! They added SO many peppers, that it was barely edible. Then, we ordered beans and they were VERY SALTY AND SPICY. And lastly, we ordered fried fish, which was very SALTY. All the dishes were very salty. THE FOOD IS CRAP. I'M NEVER COMING BACK. I really hope this place closes in the future.

They have very bad service. I'm okay with that. After all, I go there to have food. But they do ask you to pay full 20% tip at the end. That's the only thing they care about. I even saw they fight against one customer about the tip! Rude!

  • Vincent L.

Don't waste your time for this restaurant. The staff is really rude in here, they just want to serve a big party and make a large bill because we had five people and waiting for a table that will fit for us and the dishes. They told us to wait a bigger table and bypass two table that will only fit for 4 people and wait for a bigger table. When the bigger table make available then they told us that reserved for the party of 8 and told us wait for another one and sit us back to the table can only fit for 4. Even though i don't except they can provide an excellent service in this kind of restaurant. But........ I'm able to comment for their foods because we decided to leave. I'll give a zero star if Yelp makes it possible.

I had to give one star but this place does not even deserve this! Im not sure if they are under different owners but this place has gone down hill the Vietnamese sandwich was made on some day old doughy bread? It was all bread not the baguette like it usually is???? The food has no flavor I bought 2 one item plates and one sandwich $19.58 I was stunned? I will not go back this place use to great not any more

We have a party of four and were given two menus. There is no one else here and no one is paying attention to us. They ran out of boba. Why am I here?

    (1)
  • yvonne m.

Customer service is TERRIBLE. How are you going to ask us to pay right as you bring out the first dish. After waiting about 25-30 mins our food comes out. The server just plops it down and pushes it in from the edge causing everything else to shift. Food was salty but not too bad. I ordered basic Chinese like salt and pepper chicken, Mongolian beef and vegetable tofu for a party of 4. I would not come here ever again. Restaurant appearance is great and all but the quality is crap.

Newark Cafe replaces Delicious Cafe in more ways than one: -open kitchen -place packed at lunch -looks brightly lite -can't say it's more delicious, never get at delicious. this is a tossup. menu: rice/noodle/congee/spaghetti, baked foods, appetizers, eggs/omlets, sandwiches, 3 dishese/$19.99, daily specials eats: -baked ox tongue over rice(5.95) 4 -1/8" slices of semi-tender tongue on lots on rice. not a lot of sauce. mildly disappointing. cafe 88 is better and more pricey. drink: -hot hong kong milk tea (1.55) seem to be made by pouring powders and hot liquids together on the tart end, chitsy on condensed milk given, no sweet taste. foodnotes: -cheap food, you get what you pay for. -cooking shortcuts to lower costs. -no "happy hour" specials -molded booths can't hold supersized/panda sized patrons. -receipt only shows total, no itemization. amount requested exceeded expected amount by .25 cents. -cashiers doubles as waitresses. -may try curry before giving this one up. -cash only..

hole in the wall place ... cheap Chinese food, what more can you ask for! They have a special 3 items for $19.99 (additional charge for seafood dishes or premium dishes). Huge portions and tasty, you'll defiantly not leave hungry HAHahaaa FYI .. cash only

First I have to clarify this 4 star rating has factored in the price. It is really unbeatable; yea there are couple restaurants in SF Chinatown offering such price but hey that's SF and here is Newark. Regarding food quality, I ordered a curry beef brisket rice; it wasn't bad but I would prefer it to have a slightly stronger curry taste except being spicy. And my friends also ordered a pan stir fry vegetable "fu yu ton choi" and to my surprise it was hella good! Very tasty fu Yu taste and the vege was good too. Anyway, I don't think I will give 5 stars at all due to the environment setup and so-so service quality; but the service wasn't horrible as a Chinese restaurant. Very good budget restaurant.

This place is ridiculously cheap and good! Picked up a couple of items for dinner: yang chow fried rice, salt and pepper fried chicken wings, beef with tofu, and fried flounder. Good lord, this might be the place where we will pick up Chinese food! My mom and I noticed bus loads of people coming here to eat and always wondered how the food tastes. Now we know why! The salt and pepper fried chicken wings are pretty bomb and deserves a comeback!

I don't think that most Chinese restaurants' Yelp reviews reflect their real performance. Newark cafe was great, although some food tasted different from what they do in China.

The serive is extremely poor. They ignore my request for napkins for 4 times when they got some in their pockets. The fish is too salty that I thought it is bitter, and it's not even fresh! I'll never go eat in this restaurant agian!!

  • Ceci L.

Price is cheap. Food tastes pretty good. Lacking of servers. Don't expect to be a high hygiene restaurant. Ordered a Hai-Nan Chicken + a Braised Beef rice dishes. Total less than $10. Good as a daily dinner / lunch substitution if don't want to cook at home. Will try their meal package ($19.99 for 3 dishes) next time.

I have visited this location at least 20 times in its various incarnations going back over 15 years. This place seems to be better than the last place that was here. We got the 3 for $20 deal which was good. Unlimited rice, free soup and a free drink for each person with a drivers license. The portion size was big and we ended up taking at least half home. Not gourmet Chinese food, but definitely tasty and worth the price. I'll definitely be back.

Open till 10, plenty of selection on their menu, and inexpensive. Hot tea is served upon arrival, but we also ordered iced tea which is very good...but I'd suggest not to order it during your dinner meal, because it'll keep you up all night like it did with me! We ordered: Sweet and sour spare ribs (meat is so tender its easy to eat, and the sauce is freshly made), seafood mix Portuguese style (baked on top of rice) and egg with shrimp (yum!). Chinese restaurants are so common these days, it's hard to find one that stands out, but this one definitely did! Great find.

Food is pretty decent here. I would recommend their boiled spicy fish and explosive chicken. However, the customer service is not great, especially when there is a waiting line, no waiting staff would pay attention to you

On a day of my friend's monstrous toothache, we came to Cafe Newark for some slurppable rice porridge. The food was fair enough. There were good prices, & quality was generally above average. ...Average being fairly low in the 'burbs, I can imagine this sparsely decorated cafe putting the pinch on their rivals. But b4 I can focus on the food I have to address some serious misgivings: Surly waitresses - we don't expect much. But these waitresses, tho all young, were more petulant than most. What's wrong with their hiring process? I'm all for letting the food speak for itself but this is a dour group that broods over the dining hall :( It was just unattractive Dirty dish cart - we dined next to a full cart of dirty dishes & food scraps b/c the waitress was just too lazy to roll it away after topping it. Basically she parks it beside the last table that left & takes it away only when another group gets up to leave. Then we noticed all the waitresses moping about averting their eyes from the CENTER of the dining hall (where the cart sat like a mini Mission Peak) -- hoping that someone else will pick it up so they won't have to! And have you noticed that in these vietnamese/chinese restaurants, they always sidled the dirty dish cart right up next to you -- between the dirty table and ppl who are still eating, & never off to the OTHER SIDE of the dirty table away from everyone?? What is wrong with splattering food scraps & drinks full of DNA and oral bacteria just inches from your face? Everything, that's what. Closing early - sign says cafe closes at 9:00 but she turns off the open sign at 8:42pm. Shows you what happens when there's no supervisor No online menu - what, don't y'all have a phone? No wifi - ahh come on! In summary: food : 4 stars dining experience: 1 star give or take (hey how 'bout hiring some of those happy folks at Mi Pueblo across the street?)

My family went in on a Monday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. Hoping they would have some kind of $2.50 specials. They didn't have it but had other specials like rice plates, etc. So I gave it a try. I ordered the beef and scrambled eggs over rice. It was horrible. It was blend. I usually don't add additional salt to my food (only to french fries). Also why would they put mushroom in it? I've never had mushroom in beef and scrambled eggs. I also ordered the h.k. style french toast. The waitress came back later to tell me the person who makes it is off today. What a joke! How hard could it be to make french toast? Are you kidding me! Other stuff we order was the porridge, it's also blend, needed salt. Boiled Tripe w/ Soy Sauce. no taste! Lastly, this place seems dirty given it's supposed to be new. They have a lot of big screen TVs but no free wifi. Save yourself a trip, just go across the street (Jarvis Ave) for Venus Bakery Cafe instead.

Their watermelon juice was exceptional!! The food was average, the portions are big and exceptionally priced, very flavorful and oily. A very thirsty mouth in need of more watermelon juice!!! I was at this place almost a month ago and I can still imagine the sand grinding between my teeth from the oyster clay pot. It'll always remind me of the $40 bet my bff had won 10 years ago in Hawaii from stuffing a pile of wet sand in her mouth. I probably won't be coming back here again, not that it left a bad pile of sand in my mouth but simply a little too flavorful and oily for a lunch time meal.

This place is really cheap but service was horrible and not so clean. I walked in with my party of 8...the group of waitresses were chattin up at the back and just pointed us to a table that had 6 chairs...they continued chattin so we had to pull our own chairs to the table. There were several dirty tables that needed to be cleaned and when finally they were done with their convo...one of them started cleaning the tables...she sat down at the table she was cleaning and used the leftover water from previous customers used water cups left on the table to dip her rag into and wipe the table..gross...she did that for all tables she was cleaning....will never come here again no matter how cheap the food is...

Recently opened; the restaurant was completely filled when we went at around 2pm. We tried: - Hainan chicken special ($4.50): We were delighted to find that there was more chicken than rice, unlike most restaurants. The chicken was soft and yummy, but the rice was bland and didn't have much flavor. - Baked filet of cod w/ rice ($5.50): Four pieces of cod, lightly fried and then covered with cream of corn sauce and baked. The cod (and/or sauce) was overly salty... Left a weird taste in my mouth. Also, it was served in a thin metal dish, which was then put on top of two plates. It felt kind of strange eating from a metal dish... Great prices! All of the baked dishes were $5.50, even the ones with shrimp, scallop, etc. Even the cold drinks cost the same as the hot drinks! (Usually cold drinks cost $1 more). Based on the two dishes I've tried so far, I am not very impressed, but it's definitely worth it for the affordable prices.

Another Hong Kong style Chinese cafe. These places are popping up all over the east bay. This location is new, took over a Vietnamese Pho restaurant. Hopefully things will get better. Competition is tough out here.

This place is BOMB! We fed 4 people for only $22. No where else could you do that. We had ordered the 3 dishes for $19.99. It comes with soup and rice. We just got water for drinks because we were just thirsty. We ordered the cod with black beans, salt and pepper pork chops, and eggplant claypot. They were all delicious! The service is terrible, but I expect that from an authentic Chinese restaurant. If I wanted good service I would go to PF Changs or something. FYI: This place is cash only. I'm definitely coming back!

This restaurant is like 8th st cafe in Oakland and D&A cafe at clement st in San Francisco. These three restaurants may have the same menu, however, the quality of the food is different. I ordered the tofu clay pot here and it was sooooo salty. It felt like i was eating salt. Comparing it to D&A at clement st, it didn't taste salty and I can taste the flavor.

It's more like a 3.5 stars for the price! The food here is cheap and the portions are pretty big. The service is pretty much non-existent but I didn't expect much. The place looks old even though it's new. It could use a good cleaning. The food is hit and miss I guess. We tried a few items: Hunan Chicken - You get a little more than 1/4 a chicken with 2 big scoops of chicken rice and pickled veggies for $5. The chicken was tender and delicious! Best deal around! Beef Tongue with rice - Large plate of rice with 4-5 big pieces of tongue smothered in red sauce. It was pretty good. Won Ton Noodle Soup - We wanted the beef stew won ton soup but they were out of beef stew. The won tons didn't taste fresh and the soup had no flavor. Would not order again. Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce - This was delicious! Watermelon Juice - eh...nothing special...it's on sale for $1.50. Overall, I would come here again. They have like 100 items on the menu!

If I could give this place 0 stars I would, it's not the food that's bad. It's the people that works here. You can wave at the servers and they will just pretend they didn't see you and its not even busy at all .they gather in the back just chatting away with each other. been sitting here for 20 min till someone came to take my order....

The prices are great but the food tastes way too light. There isn't any taste to it. Service is excellent and friendly. There isn't enough small tables for couples. They need to cook the food up more with like fried the food in the wok more. Disappointed. It's a tough market for another HK cafe.

The food is okay... But the service is terrible... The worst. They have this special deal if you order before 6... It's called happy hours... Cheaper prices. And we got there like at 5:30 and we tried to order but the waitresses kept on walking around like they didn't see us... They just took care of other customers that already ordered... We eventually ordered at 5:55. We came there again and this time... This time... They just forgot EVERYTHING. We ordered porridge and they didn't give us any bowls or spoons... The food here isn't that great either.
