it's a really cute place. kind of small? 8 seats at the bar and maybe 10 tables inside and four or five tables outside. best chicken teryaki i've ever had. i've been to 6 japanese restaurants on the monterey bay and sushi by the bay definitely is the best. excellent presentation. beautiful everything basically. pretty food to eat. yum! huuuuge variety of rolls.

I went here for dinner with my boyfriend and we both thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The place was nearly empty when we arrived around 7pm on a Thursday evening. It's in an old tacqueria building, and you can totally tell, but I thought it added an interesting flair. There is a HUGE enclosed patio that would be really fun when it's a bit warmer. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the sushi chef and seated by the host. We were given menus and complimentary miso soup. The appetizer we ordered (Beach Lettuce Wrap) was very interesting and different from the appetizers I usually order. We also ordered a Garlic Salmon Roll (one of this month's specials) and the Tornado Roll. The Tornado Roll was amazing, just the right amount of spice. The Garlic Salmon Roll was pretty good too, but perhaps just a bit too much garlic. Service was fast and our total bill came to right around $30. I'm definitely going back, especially because this month they have an all-you-can-drink sake special for $9.90 (with a couple stipulations such as you must have a driver and you must be able to stand when you leave). Sounds like a fun night to me!

Fast and tasty! Went here with some friends and the service was surprisingly fast, considering we were a large group. The prices aren't that bad either. The whole place is clean and looks cute. It wasn't very crowded when I went there last, so it was pretty quiet, unlike other restaurants in California. On the minus side, they wouldn't let my friend return a dish she didn't like. But in general, this place is great!

I went here for the first time with my boyfriend last Friday. I'm not usually much for Sushi but I ordered the spicy California rolls and they satisfied every single one of my taste buds. I don't remember what my boyfriend got but it, too, was quite tasty. As delicious as the food is pales in comparison to how wonderful the service is. We got a free sample of one of the chef's creation just because he wanted to let us try something fun and new. He even told us that it would be cheaper to get the pitcher rather than two beers, a very rare thing for a business to do. Every single person working there had a smile on their face. They seemed to have a high customer return rate, and with good reason. I know I'll be back there the next time I'm in the mood for sushi.

Ordered a Vegetable Tempura Roll for $8.90.. It was fine, tasty, but expensive. I've gotten a bit better Veggie Tempura Roll at Pink Godzilla in Capitola for $5 and only a bit smaller. It was good enough, the seating was comfortable, service was fine. Like someone else said, large glasses of water, with ice which was great! Free miso soup that was yummy.

I wrote a review on Sushi By The Bay right after my visit early last year but it is not posted. I remember exactly what I ordered to go... an order of their Cali Roll which was pretty good and the Heart Attack which involved deep-fried jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese & spicy tuna then topped with sauces galore. Too many flavors going on. I live close by but if I return I would definately like to explore their Korean dishes as this restaurant is not run by Japanese people. It's cool, I enjoy Italian food that is not prepared by Italians.

Took the girl back to college and we went out for dinner before Girlfriend and I headed home. She's a vegetarian, so it's not always easy to find an appropriate restaurant. Japanese is often a safe bet because the kid will always eat rice and tofu. We brought along the girl's friend, who is also a non-meateater. This place had a vegetarian combo on the menu: cucumber roll, avocado roll and bean curd. Perfect. Girlfriend and I got a couple of big rolls, nigiri salmon and some uni for me. The sushi was decent and the server was very attentive--although that may have been because he was a young guy and we were with two attractive 19 year old girls. In any case, I was satisfied, even though the waiter described my uni as looking like "boogers" to the girls. I think he was just trying to sound cool. Nice little sushi bar. The fish tasted fresh. A bit pricey, but it's in a tourist town. I'd go back.

I could give it 3 stars some time, but could also give it 2 stars. It is inconsistent and depends totally on the sushi chef working. The first time we went, we decided to try a sampling of rolls and sashimi. The prices were more than many restaurants, but nothing outlandish. I noticed that one of the sushi chefs was instructing the other chef on how to make the rolls we ordered. As were were only one of two table in the place, it was obvious that they were making our rolls. I wish the older sushi chef hadn't left and gone to the back... I was really disappointed with them. The rolls had way too much rice, it was almost comical. They were so sloppy, funny shaped with rice falling everywhere when you picked them up. Also, they put eel instead of salmon on one of the rolls, which I usually wouldn't be bothered by so much, but this eel was definitely past its prime. The second time I visited, I had lunch with a friend. Unfortunately, the rolls were a .little neater, but still the same huge amount of rice. The ratio is way off, no flavor if half of the roll is rice... especially rice that hasn't been seasoned well like good sushi rice is. I think I am going to venture out to Akaoni in Carmel as I hear they have the best sushi around. When I feel like walking down the street or for something quick, I think I will stick with Crystal Fish. Their quality is a little better and the prices are substantially lower.

We were really surprised with this place. Read the reviews and everyone was right on. The Green tea was really really good!!.The Green Tea ice cream was yum and the portions were very generous. Enough to share... The service was also great. We had a few rolls. Everything was good...

We love this place!! Can't say enough good things about it! They have specials from 5pm on of rolls, sake and sushi. We go on Mondays where it is Dollar Sushi! Yes dollar shush! The Ono is my favorite with large pieces and a sauce with red onions on top. There is also yellowtail, salmon, red tuna. albacore and shrimp...dollar each piece! The lunch special of 2 items for 7 bucks is a great deal. Teriyaki, tonkatsu, croque, all delish. The staff is friendly and attentive. It gets packed! Go ahead and give it a try, you won't be disappointed in the sushi or cooked specialities!

So far this little place has proven to be a good sushi spot for me and the family. The servers are friendly and the sushi is plated beautifully and is pretty fresh. The rolls are also a good size and they have a wide variety to chose from. Their Tornado roll is pretty decadent and is definitely worth trying. Also they have a vegetable roll that I was really impressed with as a lot of other sushi places that have similar veggie roll offerings taste fairly bland and lack in presentation. The veggie roll here was elegant, flavorful and under $10 which was really nice. Especially great if you aren't a big fan of fish or you're a vegetarian. The restaurant has a nice eclectic mix of japanese decor and feels very cozy. If its a nice day outside they also have outdoor patio seating. Also I just found out that you can get delivery through Doorbell Dining that is separate company they do business with...( doorbelldining.com ) In a nutshell, good sushi, fair prices and a nice environment :)

I dislike saying negative things, but had to mention that dining at at this restaurant was one of the worst experience I had in a long time. Tables outside on deck was dirty and not clean and spider webs everywhere, the least that they can do is buy new tables for the seats outside. Food was awful and no flavor a at all. Honesty, when we got home me and my wife got sick for the rest of the night. Bad bad experience and bad bad food. Sorry had to say that but it was honestly and awful place to go eat at.

I was looking for a good Japanese restaurant. My search continues. If you go to a restaurant for good service then go to this restaurant. (That's why it got two stars.) However if you go to a Japanese restaurant to get authentic Japanese food this isn't the place. I had a craving for Katsu-don. It is the worse katsu-don I've ever had. Basically it's was scrambled egg with vegetables with over cooked tonkatsu and worcestershire sauce on top. Weird. And the rice was too mushi for me. I also got the fried calamari. Have you ever had dubble-bubble gum? Think of the texture of that gum - deep fried in tempura batter. (Dubble Bubble gum has more flavor.) My friend had fried oysters. It was cooked about 10 minutes beyond golden brown, 5 minutes beyond dark brown. However, the raw cabbage was nicely chopped.

The wait was far too long at Mundos so I decided to head over to Sushi by the Bay. Clearly, I haven't been back in quite some time. This time I decided to order the Katsudon Donburri Bowl (pork cutlet). The pork was relatively tender and had a great crispy golden crust. There was a sufficient amount of flavor from the sauce and wished there was a little more because everything else was bland. I appreciated that everything was piping hot, the vegetables were fresh and crisp but it needed salt. Overall Thoughts With a few refinements I believe Sushi by the Bay has good potential and hopefully can capitalize on the traffic from Mundos!

Great service, great rolls. Takeout took me overall less then 5 minutes to come in, order, get the sushi and leave!! The rice is very nice, and the fish is very fresh. Also, the patio here is very cute, even though it faces a busy street.

We have been living in Carmel for the past two years and this is by far our favorite sushi place in the area. We have lived all over California, including San Diego, which had some amazing sushi, and we feel this is comparable. Not only is the food excellent (especially the Heart Attack appetizer), but the chefs and staff are incredibly sweet and attentive. They make our favorite spicy sauce as soon as we walk through the door. =) Many who are visiting automatically think to go to another place closer to Cannery Row, but it is definitely worth taking a little stroll to Sushi By The Bay!

Delicious sushi and nice variety on the menu. Service was nice and ambiance was casual. I ordered the crunch and caterpillar rolls, since I'm pregnant and can't have any of the yummy raw sushi I prefer. Both were fresh and yummy. I started with edamame and the complimentary miso is a nice touch. I would def come back and would recommend.

My family loves this special eating spot. Our grandchildren (10 & 6) love it a lot and they really love Annie, co-owner with husband Kevin. I've been coming here since it opened with a different management and when Annie and Kevin took over (some six yrs ago)... the menu is continually filled with new items and some with a twist of inventive culinary imagination. We love their fried calamari and I especially love their seafood salad ...ask George to add his spicy salad dressing ... Yum Yum.

Really, really great. We're locals and usually eat elsewhere. But I read good reviews of this place and took my husband for his birthday. The quality is outstanding, service is great, portions nice. We loved this place and couldn't stop talking about how we've driven by it for years and never went in. What a loss. We'll definitely be back.

I ordered food for delivery because I was in town for work and I was very impressed. I got an udon soup and a side roll. Both were very good and I felt really satisfied after. I wouldn't say that the prices were cheap, but it was definitely worth the speed and taste. If I go back into town sometime soon I will definitely think of Sushi by the Bay.

Great service, good rolls. Not overly massive like harumis so I can have a variety. And they aren't stuck up and clicky like harumis either. New fave :)

Although the restaurant didn't open until 5pm, they told us we were welcome to come inside even though it was only 4:40pm. The menu had a great variety and a nice price range. The dessert was especially delicious and our waitress was really nice. I definitely recommend if you love sushi and are in the area.

No good!! I guess people that reviewed this place never had decent Japanese food. Rice was either old or not cook completely fish tasted old.

  • Mari M.

The sushi here was alright. I'm still trying to find a decent sushi place here in Monterey. The plus side is that our waitress was helpful in providing suggestions to my friend on what she should order (we had forgotten that she doesn't like fish and she didn't say anything until we got there). The spicy tuna roll I ordered wasn't spicy at all. The gyoza was alright. I'll continue my search for sushi...

This is a cute little place that looks like it was an small diner at one time. The staff is super friendly and the service was excellent. If my review was based on the service alone it would have been a five star review. The food was just OK and probably should earn them a three star review. Nothing really had much flavor. My wife had the Tempura California Roll as part of a combo and I decided to order a combo with California Rolls, Chicken Teriyaki, and Tempura. Hers came first and when I tried her Tempura California Rolls, I almost wished I didn't order regular California rolls. They had the crab diced up stuff with mayo, but at least there wasn't much mayo. The Tempura and Teriyaki were pretty bland too. It wasn't the best Japanese food I've had, but the service was really terrific. There are plenty of other food choices to try in the area that I would probably eat at before here, but if I really had to have sushi I it the area I would consider going back.

One of my favorite resturants when i was living in Seaside. Friendly staff and sushi chefs. Must try the lion King Roll, Rainbow Roll and Volcano Roll! delicious. Sashimi was pretty good too, but sometimes cut too thinly.

Hair in food! Got Sushi by the Bay delivered tonight by Doorbell Dining. The sushi itself was alright, not that great, but not horrible. This would have been a 3 star review until I picked up a piece of sushi and it had a nice long hair on it. The delivery guy had short hair, so it wasn't his. I can only assume it came from the restaurant. If the owner reads this I would be happy to send photos. Rest assured, I will not be ordering again, nothing says delicious like uncooked food and hair.

By the bay...already a nice idea, huh? Stopped by while perusing the local markets and found me a cute sushi spot. I had a Poki Salad (spicy fich) and it ws yummo. ...and since this was a qwik stopover THe Sashimi was fresh and just right. The sushi chef was wiiing to be your creative expert if your taste buds were not being too specific that day. The staff were friendly and attentive without being overly so--- We had a little house Saki before we headed out on another adventure and it was just right. Next time??? We'll tackle some sweet treats too!

After reading reviews for this place, decided to give it a go. Can't ever have enough good sushi places to frequent! The atmosphere was cozy and the service was great. We were two of probably six people in the restaurant on a weekday, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. What was ordered: *fatty tuna *mixed tempura *lion king roll *rainbow roll *crazy roll *salmon eggs *some more nigiri that I can't remember the name of :P As always, I over-ordered and we gave it our best effort, but couldn't finish. :p I really loved the overall vibe and the nigiri and rolls were extremely delicious and fresh. The tea was also another plus -- they made REAL green tea and it was bomb. And the miso soup that comes with the meal...so much tofu and green onions, they did not skimp - yum! I am not gonna lie, though, I think the best part was the company =) Sushi by the bay, I give you a solid 4.5 stars!

I had miso ramen, gyoza, and mocchi green tea ice cream.... It was like I was in Japan again. The food was so delicious! I'm definitely coming here whenever I can.

Volcano- Awwwww yeah! (fire show too!) List is ENDLESS!!!!! DESSERT: Fried Banana- HEAVEN ON EARTH! (deep fried, roped with green tea ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate syrup) UDON is WONDERFUL! HUGE and I mean HUGE serving, good for 2!

Cozy small sushi place. Good variety of rolls. The mom & dad roll was quite yummy. I love Mac nuts and if you like em too, you should definitely get it! Monterey roll is good too if you like cream cheese rolls. And the deep fried banana with ice cream is a large serving, so leave room for it! Can come with green tea or mango ice cream. Walking distance from our motel, so that's a plus too! Especially after having a sake bomb or two. ;)

In town for a conference. Had crazy roll, Yellow tail roll. Also ordered spicy tuna roll but got spicy California roll. Total came out to be $29. The sushi was slightly above average in quality but nothing special. Service was friendly.

There are great options for seafood in Monterey. When it comes to a sushi craving for my wife and I, Sushi By The Bay is the best in the area. They offer the best selection of fresh rolls (non-fried sushi) as well as a great selection of baked and fried rolls. This is one of the main reasons we go. We want to taste the sushi. Fried is good from time to time but the taste of quality fish is first in our book. Service is great. Environment is authentic and the owners seem to have there stuff together. No website... booo because I want more people to support this great establishment. Though on the other hand I want to always have a seat when I walk in. 5 stars: great sushi, great food, great service, great environment, good pricing (for sushi) ..... :) ***A unique roll to try is the Oshio Roll (one of our favorites)

My bf and I went here on this sunny February afternoon for lunch, and it was great! We sat outside and had the patio to ourselves. I ordered a 3 item combination box with the yellowtail roll, the crunch roll, and the teriyaki salmon. It came with miso soup, a little salad, and a nice bit of rice... all for less than $12. My boyfriend got the beef udon (a soup dish) and he loved it. His also came with miso soup, so you can look forward to that. Our two meals and a pepsi came to $26. Not bad at all for a nice lunch in the sun. We will be back for sure, the Katsu Donburi is calling my name. As a sidenote, I asked our server (a very nice lady) if the patio was dog friendly and she said it is, but only if the other customers on the patio (if there are any) are all right with having a dog on the patio. So, I would call ahead and ask if your dog can come onto the patio as it may be conditional.

Sushi was flavorful and fresh, but sashimi was too thin and small. Rolls had a lot of rice, proportionally speaking. The biggest problem I had was that I spoke with the chef before ordering (I was sitting at the bar) and he told me what pieces of fish he'd give me if I ordered Chef's choice. I ended up getting different fish.

Would not recommend this place.. We ordered several rolls and all of them were... meh. I wouldn't go back. Too much rice with no flavor. The albacore roll was their special of the day and yet it had an odd coloring and was very stiff. Also their baked roll with the scallops on top.. wtf was that? They took a california roll, ONE large scallop, and sliced it super thin & put it on top. I've never seen it done that way. Weak. Anytime I order a bay roll like that it's a pile of scallops on top. That thing absolutely did not have more than 1. They basically charged me 12 dollars for a California roll with some extra sauce. The more I write the angrier I get that I let this place take my money. Never again.

Fabulous Lunchbox Specials! Adorable clean little place has inside, sushi bar counter or heated patio seating. We opted for inside with the sushi placemat menus. Mom got her Sake and we had a good start. The miso soup was perfect, as was everything in our lunch boxes. The owner was Mr. friendly and made sure we were perfectly delighted. Actually, I just love those Asian eateries that play country music or oldies but goodies. They had me at "Hello"!

Good service. I was expecting larger portions in the teriyaki bowl, but still tasty. The crab used in sushi is just imitation with no mayo. :( On the other hand the miso soup was delicious!

Food poisoning. I ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura and that was all I had. Tasted OK, too much oil. 1.5 hours later, vicious diarrhea ensued and lasted ~4 hours, followed by vomiting. I signed up for a yelp acct to post this review. Maybe their sushi is fine, but I'd avoid anything fried.

The service here is fantastic, and it keeps me coming back!! They are extremely nice when you sit at the bar. The Jordan roll is fantastic! I also like the "endless sake" option.

During the madness of the Concours d'Elegance, my friend and I were looking for a place to eat off the beaten path so we could avoid the crowds of car-lovers revving their engines. We decided to head over to Seaside and found ourselves at Sushi By The Bay. I'd been eyeing this spot for a while, the latest in the growing list of sushi purveyors along Fremont Street, plus it was nice to get out of town and away from the tourists for the evening. We started off dinner with some gyoza. I was a little surprised that these were vegetable and tofu gyoza--I was expecting chicken or pork. They tasted OK--not great, but not terrible either--but I thought they could have used a little more time in the frying pan to give them a nice crunch outside. Next, we decided to order a sampling of rolls--a spicy California roll, a crunch roll, a Double Double roll (shrimp tempura, crab and shrimp), a veggie tempura roll. The spicy California roll was my favorite, by far, with a great kick. The rest of the rolls were decent, again not bad, but nothing special either--though the "crunch" topping on the crunch roll was a little off, flavorwise, and I'd skip this one next time around. Sushi By The Bay is relatively small, and it was almost full on the Friday night we were there. We were seated at a table pretty quickly. Our service was a little frenetic--I think they were clearly overwhelmed by the nearly full house that Friday night. Practically every server in the restaurant stopped by our table at some point during the evening. This should have been an indication of things to come--turns out that our order was accidentally delivered to the table next door. Luckily, they recovered from this misstep quickly, bringing us our order lickety-split. While it wasn't the best sushi I've had on the Monterey Peninsula, Sushi By The Bay is a nice option to have when I'm bored with the usual offerings around town. The daily specials make for a nice touch too.

Oh me oh my oh yay new fav sushi haunt... Across from the new Big 5, near Country Club Cleaners, Sushi By the Bay is easy to miss at night - no big signage; small building. Maybe they'll keep it that was so it doesn't get *too* popular? Oh. Judging by the reviews it's too late. The only false advertising of this gem is the "by the bay" part. Want a view? Dinner with family that hesitate when you suggest sushi? Go to Sapporo. Want a great place to catch up with a friend? Reasonably priced? Want a break from snooty restaurants? Feel at home? Buy a sushi plate that's ON FIRE? (take a look at the restaurant pics) Non-pretentious and happy servers were eager to adjust the minor details for my friend with a finicky diet. Atmosphere was kinda clunky in a very fun way. Sushi bar looked good though we took a table. Place is clean. Courtesy Miso was a bonus (standard stuff, still good). I tried only a couple rolls, the yellow and white tuna (mmmm) and the BIG FIRE. Yes, it's flambe sushi, and yes it's worth the $11. Savory goodness. One visit brings them four stars; I'll bet that a few more visits might have me adding that 5th star. Enjoy!

My friend wanted to go here knowing 5 years ago when they first opened it was just terrible. Everything was just ok not that great. When we got our sashimi plate we called the waitress who happens to be owners daughter. We politely asked her if she can take the plate back because raw fish wasn't fresh at all but changing color and dry around the edges. To make the story short, we called for owner because we were charged for bad, dry, turning color sashimi. She was very rude and start getting emotional and loud. We were so shocked that we end up paying for food that was never touched and gone bad. Now you see why I haven't gone back for 5 years. Stay away, they are so rude with no sense of etiquette and customer service. It's just bad business practice to belittle the customer, knowing that it was bad fish. I'm sorry but this place needs to learn some people manners.

Nothing really to write about. Remember that movie "Liar Liar" with Jim Carey? The lady asked Jim after having sex " so.. how was it"? His reply was " I've had better"... same goes for this place. The only thing that really made me say "mmmmm" is the chicken udon. Other than that... ehhh... es okay meng.

My fiancé and I come here just about once a month, may even twice. I have a few favorites when it comes to their sushi rolls, but you can't go wrong. The staff is so sweet, Heather always takes care of us. The crunch roll, and sake roll are my most-ordered roll. Definitely my local favorite when it comes to Sushi. :)

Very disappointing. I had the agedashi tofu & a spicy tuna roll. The tuna tasted fine, but the rice had no flavour & was falling off the nori. Definitely not good sushi rice. I should know, I lived in Japan for 2 years & ate tons of sushi, amongst other Japanese food. As for the tofu, it had no flavour. Guess my search for decent Japanese food in the area continues. :-/

A bit wary about this place given what location looked like driving up, but upon entering my mind changed completely. Staff are friendly, warm and welcoming. We'd gone for dinner, it was pretty late, but our food came very quickly. I have a new favorite from this place: avacado rolls with tempura sprinkles (delicious!) The chef (there were two behind counter), they were so friendly, inviting and chit chatted with us for a bit - just a very family friendly atmosphere all around. I love that the Miso soup was brought out right away. Their edamames were delicious. The only thing that could have been better was the fried tempura. I felt like my tempura shrimp wasn't cooked thoroughly enough, but that night I was too into the avacado rolls & edamame to care :)

My wife was attending the Monterey Optometric Symposium over the weekend, and we decided to check out this little hidden gem off a ways away from the main downtown, Fisherman's Wharf tourist-y area. Very happy we got here..japanese food is cooked by a cool Korean cat..which explained why bulgogi and other similar bbq meats were on the menu. best deal is the 12 dollar three item bento lunch plate. Normally, for these type of bento combo deals, you get small servings, but this place don't play that sh*t. I got a nice fat salmon teriyaki filet, a heaping mound of teriyaki beef. and six big pieces of crunch roll..just think cali roll but fried. Got their ninja roll as well, and it was good, and huge! well, considering that mostly white folk live in these parts, they gotta make the portions a little larger, versus in Tokyo where you can feed a family of four with a sushi roll..because they be so damn tiny over there.

Great sushi for the price! I've been here 15-20 times and always have had great tasting, fresh fish. They have some great specialty rolls, try the hot night and the victoria secret.

I love this place. It's a bright and clean place with seating at the bar, a table inside or outside. Before you even order, they bring everyone a complimentary bowl of miso soup to start. They have a lot of creative rolls and if you're really hungry their bentos are the perfect size. They have vegetarian rolls, raw rolls, fried rolls, and even baked rolls. i highly reccomend their beef teriyaki, it's always cooked to perfection. The last time i was there i had a roll with tempura shrimp, beef teriyaki, cucumber, and cream cheese in a special sauce. it was fantastic. They have friendly and attentive waiters who always stop by to refill drinks and ask if you need anything. I gave this place five stars for the piece de resistance, dessert consisting of a tempura banana cut like sushi with green tea ice cream, whipped cream, and chocolate sauce over it. Not does this place serve amazing food, it is affordable.

Very solid sushi join that is just down the street from us. The funny part is I have gone past this little joint hundreds of times and have never thought about stopping there. Today, we wanted a small sushi fix, so we gave it a shot. The place is cute, clean, and the service is very good and friendly. The meal came with free miso (awesome!!) and the water glasses were large (major plus for me since I seem to drink a lot of water and a lot of times have to ask for a refill). Anyway, the sushi was very good. We tried two rolls, the In and Out plus the Black Jack. If push came to shove, I would chose the In and Out over the Black Jack, but both were quite good. The total came out to $22 pre-tip which was good considering the size of the rolls and the freshness of the fish. So, why not five stars? Our only complaint is they seem to be lacking really creative rolls. The selection on the menu is fine, but doesn't have some of the really options that more and more places are starting to embrace (mango for example). We will definitely be back!

Friendly, Fresh, and Fabulous!! We went in with low expectations and left surprisingly satisfied. We ordered one the specials, the Honey Roll which was delightfully delicious. The Hamachi Sashimi was the most tender I've ever had. We had the In and Out roll which was spicy and delicious. The Sunomono was fresh and different, not the usual overly vinegary but more of a sesame oil dressing. The miso soup was standard. Our waiter man was friendly. Overall a delightful meal. We will definitely return soon!

Service and vibe is friendly, and prices are good...however my sashimi tasted a little old.... The salmon was ok but the chef's other picks weren't that tasty.... Other than that I would return again!

Stopped by this place for lunch on a Friday with some friends. Nice looking eating area. Decent size Sushi Bar. Wasn't very crowed for lunch. My party ended up ordering the Bento Boxes which include Rice, A small salad, Miso soup, and a choice of two or three main entrees. Food was pretty good, Teriyaki sauce was a bit heavy. But the Sashimi was fresh and tasty. Not a bad place for a mid-range Sushi joint. Will try to return for a dinner experience.

The menu currently listed on the sushibythebay.com website belongs to the PREVIOUS OWNER who can't or won't give access to the new owners to update. THE CURRENT menu at the restaurant is 2-3 times more extensive!!!!! Just got back from celebrating Father's Day 2011 and I can't even begin to tell you what a great time we had. SERVICE was EXCELLENT! Let's get to the food part. Appetizer: Calamari tempura - hot, crispy and tender! The complementary sauce was also very good. Dinner: Two item Bento Box: I chose Mixed tempura (just because I am too lazy to make it at home) and the Crunch roll. Again the tempura was hot, crispy and delicious. Was not that impressed with the Crunch roll. It wasn''t bad, it was just ok. The only "con" is a matter of preference for me and not really an issue per se. I, a person of Japanese descent, prefer not to have my rice served up with an ice cream scoop. Having said that, we intend to go back to try the HAMACHI KAMA, FRIED BANANA dessert and the DEEP FRIED OYSTERS next time. These items and much more on NOT ON THE WEBSITE!!! Bottomline: Go! Try the variety of food that is NOT listed on the "old www.sushibythe bay.com website.

Located in the former, little known, Casa Moreno taco shop, I was intriqued by the signage for yet another sushi place. Next to Blockbuster *boos* and some tax accountant, it's a surprising find. They opened with little fan fare. I had high hopes and low expectations. The food is decent to good. Me and my +1 each had the 3-item bento dinner, which has a larger selection than most places. Among the items were chicken/beef teriyaki, sushi/sashimi selections, a few rolls (tuna, spicy tuna, california and crunch), tempura and a few other things I can't remember. It was around 9pm (which is late in Monterey terms) the place was half full. The service was good for these kinda places, very friend but not the best at serving (but hey they're new), just two servers for 10 tables or so, plus the bar. The sushi was fresh and a decent grade. The beef teriyaki was average. The tempura was a little dissapointing, the batter was heavy and was perhaps not served right out of the fryer (it was hard to tell with the batter). Same with the crunch roll.

The place is really friendly. It's hard to find parking when it's packed, but unfortunately it's not always packed. The staff is really friendly and the fish is really fresh. I eat there every Wednesday now.

So glad I decided to get the bento vs just a crunch roll, otherwise I would be starving right now! This place will satisfy a fast-food sushi roll craving, but that's about it. The crunch roll fell apart completely, wasn't made with real sushi rice, and was a massacre to look at-but tasted good. I got the salmon teriyaki as my 2nd item. Was tasty, although a tad bit overcooked. Not dry though. The salad was typical bento fare-cabbage with tasty tamari dressing. All for 10 bucks. I would go back if I was in the area and jonesing for a roll, but am on the hunt for something better.

I always go with the sashimi-sashimi box lunch, with no rice and double the salad. Always delicious and expertly served. Everyone is so friendly. Love this place! And it's walking distance from Monterey Peninsula Airport. Park at Monterey Bay Aviation and walk 7 minutes to Fremont Ave.

I really like this place compared to other sushi restaurants in the area. As a local, I go here when I'm feeling up for some sushi. I wouldn't say that their california roll is the greatest, but I do love the other food available. I like their teriyaki salmon dinner, its good! Their shrimp tempura roll is superb. I also like the cucumber salad. I highly recommend this place, its not bad at all. The chef is so friendly, he thanks you a million times even though all you've gotten is a hot pot of green tea and a salad.

Decent sushi, reasonably priced. Not great, but not horrible. The service was really friendly and the chef came out after our meal to make small talk. It was sweet.

I read a review by the local Monterey paper advocating this place and was EXTREMELY disappointed. The service was terrible (friendly, but had NO idea what was on the menu) and the sushi boat we ordered was bland, the rice was dry and one of the choices included by the chef was imitation crab. Yuck! Stay away from this place at all costs!

I decided to try a new sushi place after we moved one town over. This one is really great. They have great combination dinners and they have a large variety of different kinds of rolls. The service isn't the greatest. The price is reasonable, I would just spruce up the atmoshphere in there a little bit. This is my new favorite.

Well, to be fair I should state that the first time I ever had sushi I was living in Japan. So my standards are pretty high. I ordered my meal tonight from Doorbell Dining. Got some basic sushi fare, along with the beach roll, some gyoza and a seaweed salad. The salad was fantastic - super fresh and well seasoned. The gyoza was perfect. The sushi was great, although I feel like the rice was a little overbearing. The raw fish was very fresh and the texture was pleasing. The sushi wasn't quite as cold as I tend to like but I think that was more due to the transit time and not their fault. Two things that irked me: I only got one order of kappamaki (cucumber roll) even though I ordered and paid for two, and there was no wasabi anywhere to be found. Not on the fish itself, not included with the fish, not even in a little packet on the side. Both minor oversights and both things I'm totally willing to overlook. I will definitely order from them again, and next time I'll probably take my family to the restaurant. Stand by to hear how my kids like it.
