Reviews:
Em Le's is the type of restaurant you'd expect in the sleepy town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. It's a warm, little cottage that serves breakfast all day. The moment I walked in, I felt like I was a hobbit. I've eaten here a couple times and I've never had a problem getting a table despite the restaurant's small size. The staff is very friendly and easy to flag down if you need anything. They have an extensive menu for breakfast and lunch and everything I have tried is very good. I would encourage anyone in the area to try Em Le's at least once. It will be a good experience - maybe not life changing, but good.
2.7 stars for dinner.... mostly bland, flavorless (albeit cooked properly) fish that we tried. I do believe that Em Le's shines for breakfast dishes, and is geared more toward seniors for the dinner hour. Ahi tuna and salmon entrees tried....though the portions were extremely large (which, I have to add, reminded me of certain Kitchen NIghtmares episodes) and enough to feed perhaps 3, all the value of the dinner at ~$15 price point still couldn't convince me Large salads, large mains.... small on actual delivery and cooking technique. The service, however, was most excellent, and the restaurant is country charm meets quirky.
Went there for breakfast last month (January 2014) based on the picture of a fruit covered Belgian waffle. The waffle was all that it promised to be - fresh fruit and a crunchy waffle. I had the corned beef hash - also delicious. Coffee was perfect. Jimmy (owner? chef? manager?) was friendly, helpful and had a wonderful sense of humor. The other customers were locals - gave the place a great homey vibe. We will most definitely to back for breakfast - and possibly for lunch and dinner.

By far the worst culinary experience I've had in Carmel. The host stand was confusing as it is not in the front entrance of restaurant, and then of course, the blank stares by the 5 or 6 waiters standing around staring at us were not helpful either. Our waiter was terrible, the food was not great, and not to mention the hair in my dessert. It was a gorgeous day outside, but yet there were only 3 or four tables that they actually opened up on the patio. We were getting chilly so we asked our waiter if we could move to a better table in the direct sun, However; the table we had moved to hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests so I had to ask if he could please have someone clean it, to which I received the sigh of annoyance. Our experience was not great but I actually felt even worse the the table next to us as they had been waiting for 20 or 30 minutes for their waiter to come back with their drink orders, and then another 20 minutes to take their food order. Finally, at then end of the meal I notice that they were rushed to receive their bill with the afterthought of "oh do you guys want dessert?" Needless to say, we will not be returning. It's a very cute restaurant with great decor but food and service are what wins my vote. Unfortunately not the case here.
My daughter was in town for the Labor Day holiday. We stopped in at the bar for a drink. I ordered a mixed drink. My daughter asked for the wine list and then for some advice from the bar tender for a "fruity blend". He loudly scoffed at her. It was insulting. She wanted to leave immediately. I encouraged her not to let this spoil our otherwise pleasant day. We stayed, had our drinks and left. (The bar and restaurant were empty in this late afternoon visit). I have lived here, first in the 40's, and now, again, since the 70's. Being treated this way was a new attitude for me
Nestled on a corner in downtown Carmel, Il Fornaio is a lovely intimate chain restaurant that absolutely does not feel like a chain restaurant. The waiters that we had were very informative when I asked questions about some of the ingredients that were used in the dish. The pizzas are big enough to share between two people! The presentation of the food was very elegant and the food tasted heavenly. The only reason for a star deduction is because the bathrooms could use a little renovating to match the fancy décor on the outside. Bravo Il Fornaio, Bravo!
