By far the worst culinary experience I've had in Carmel. The host stand was confusing as it is not in the front entrance of restaurant, and then of course, the blank stares by the 5 or 6 waiters standing around staring at us were not helpful either. Our waiter was terrible, the food was not great, and not to mention the hair in my dessert. It was a gorgeous day outside, but yet there were only 3 or four tables that they actually opened up on the patio. We were getting chilly so we asked our waiter if we could move to a better table in the direct sun, However; the table we had moved to hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests so I had to ask if he could please have someone clean it, to which I received the sigh of annoyance. Our experience was not great but I actually felt even worse the the table next to us as they had been waiting for 20 or 30 minutes for their waiter to come back with their drink orders, and then another 20 minutes to take their food order. Finally, at then end of the meal I notice that they were rushed to receive their bill with the afterthought of "oh do you guys want dessert?" Needless to say, we will not be returning. It's a very cute restaurant with great decor but food and service are what wins my vote. Unfortunately not the case here.

My daughter was in town for the Labor Day holiday. We stopped in at the bar for a drink. I ordered a mixed drink. My daughter asked for the wine list and then for some advice from the bar tender for a "fruity blend". He loudly scoffed at her. It was insulting. She wanted to leave immediately. I encouraged her not to let this spoil our otherwise pleasant day. We stayed, had our drinks and left. (The bar and restaurant were empty in this late afternoon visit). I have lived here, first in the 40's, and now, again, since the 70's. Being treated this way was a new attitude for me

Nestled on a corner in downtown Carmel, Il Fornaio is a lovely intimate chain restaurant that absolutely does not feel like a chain restaurant. The waiters that we had were very informative when I asked questions about some of the ingredients that were used in the dish. The pizzas are big enough to share between two people! The presentation of the food was very elegant and the food tasted heavenly. The only reason for a star deduction is because the bathrooms could use a little renovating to match the fancy décor on the outside. Bravo Il Fornaio, Bravo!

A great Italian restaurant in Carmel! Food was excellent and service was very good! We will come back when in Carmel, thanks!

The food was good but our server seemed like he was bored and assumed that since we were a large party he would automatically receive large tip and didn't have to work very hard. We went for long periods with empty glasses and when the main course came he slammed them onto the table in front of us as if it was a major burden. In summary, good food but mediocre service.

This is a solid 3-star restaurant. The service is friendly and warm, and the ambiance is nice and elegant. I ordered the canneloni al forno. The portion was just right. I wasn't wowed by the dish, but it was good. For the price, I might expect a little more to it, but all in all, it was a solid meal.

This is the second time I've ever eaten at this Il Fornaio, being an out-of-towner, but I always find it appealing. It's a real locals place, and although it may be part of a chain, it has its own separate charm. We just felt like having some appetizers and a drink one evening, and so we sat at the bar. The bartender is a real talker and friendly, and you can tell he has a very established clientele who sit at the bar with him every night. Our pizza was the Fradiavola, very spicy and good. Caprese appetizer salad could have been better. There's something about the atmosphere of this place and sitting at the long bar that was really pleasant. Could be it soaks in the years of atmosphere from the old Pine Inn, which it adjoins. Worthwhile for a stop for a glass of wine and apps if nothing else. I've had dinner here and as well, and it was very good.

Normally, I can highly recommend this restaurant because the food in the past has been awesome but we went to the Carmel one on Christmas evening for an anniversary dinner, and was disappointed. The server was great, brought us water, bread etc. but when my entree came it was just...slightly warm and had no flavor at all. The server was very helpful, he took it away and brought me another entree that was good and took it off the bill. My husband's meal was just ok, and it was on the special menu for the evening.

NOT truly Puppy Friendly - as tourist map states. ;( No outdoor heaters on patio area so will possibly try for breakfast or lunch. Dinner and service were great ;) We sat right up at the counter in front of the chefs. Everything that came out we saw & smelled! Such a cool experience ! The restaurant is connected to & partially inside of the Pine Inn so there are about 3 different entrances & exits. So ... * Tip - go explore ! Hotel has History . (Note to self- my drink was more than my meal. Start early ;) (7/29/12)

We held a private party (rehearsal dinner) in the Rotunda room for 14 people. Kim (event coordinator) was easy to deal with and made nice suggestions that fit well with the theme. The service dedicated for our party was very impressive. Marilee and Marco were very professional and kept everything running smoothly. The room itself gave a nice private feel. With the fireplace and decor, the guest were very comfortable. The only complaint I have is the temperature of the room. Being from Southern California I like being warm, and Carmel in general is rarely warm. My bride-to-be and I were seated near the side of the large windows from which we could feel the cold. Overall, I would recommend Il Fornaio's Rotunda room for private parties.

poor service: came here for dessert, host sat us on patio, server never came out. we just left and went somewhere else for our dessert.

Walked in said we wanted to sit at bar and have a drink and one appetizer they were near closing, the guy said ok I will check with manager. He came back and said it's ok. So they sucked us up ordering two drinks $25.00 + then no appetizer appeared we ordered carpaccio, a couple down from us were served a salad and pizza! I'll never ever go back. This place says one thing to get you in and then doesn't deliver. Beware.

We only visited the little deli-walk up. However, we got a great sandwich to take to the beach for a nice picnic on one of those rare 70+ days in Carmel. However, we will visit the restaurant next time we are there. It looked charming and looks like a great place for a gourmet pizza.

I really don't mean to slander this business, but I have to share this experience from this past Saturday night. After being seated and while reviewing the menu, a GIANT cockroach crawled up my husbands light blue dress shirt. (Over 1 inch long) I jumped up, ran over, and knocked it off his shirt. My husband immediately squished it. I looked at the hostess AND the manager and said "did you see that" and they both just shrugged. My husband really was already embarassed and didn't want me to make a scene, so I didn't press it and said nothing more. We had an good meal but I had the heebie jeebies the whole meal. And the management did absolutely nothing. Zip zero zilch. NEVER going back. I really wonder what is going on here. I have never even seen a cockroach anywhere in California for over 4 years . If we were in TX , it would be different.

On the 10th Nov, wanted to have a little bite at Il Fornaio, instead we got bad service, waited for at lease 20 minute before, and after we ask for a waitress, what we order was not what I had ordered, the answer was maybe they didn't do it right this time, To top if off they were doing this bad service to a lot of people, Il Fornaio sad on you!

I usually love this place but sadly our experience this time was not good. The restaurant is very pretty and I still love it's location, but the service and food were subpar. The food took an hour to arrive, the waiter was absent most of the time, and the Caesar salad, pizza & chicken tenders w fries were very unappetizing. With so many great choices in Carmel to eat, this restaurant needs to do a food evaluation.

I came here for dinner. their service was really good. its kinda classy. mostly older people who come here for dinner and wine. for starters, I had the sampler called Antipasto della Casa. the salmon with cream cheese and the scallop wrapped proscuitto was very good. for entrees, my bf had the Linguine Portofino and i had the Turtei con Aragosta. the linguine was good like normal linguine dishes. The lobster ravioli i had was eh. I didn't like the sauce it was drenched in and tasted funny. we also had their signature red wine. it was really good. the food here seems authentic. the price was a bit on expensive side though.

Happy Hour is a bargain, but you have to get here really early to get a good table. I'm a local, but have moved away from Carmel.... but I grew up here. I work ten minutes from here. If you're looking for a singles bar for the "older crowd" (that would be me), this is the place to be. I'm happily married, so hubs and I watched the Carmel women in their "tres chic" skinny jeans and boots doing their mating calls. Cocktails are a bargain, and the pizza isn't bad a tall. For Carmel, this is a real buzz for your buck. We'll be back. For Happy Hour, that is. It's a fun show to watch.

Whenever I visit Carmel, I have to stop in at il Fornaio, which is attached to the historic Pine Inn. First of all, I love the light, the way it streams in in the mornings. The hostesses are great, too, and one is even from Italy. Everything in here seems to speak of quality. We've come to know Linda, one of the managers. She seems to know everybody, can recommend the best things on the menu, and makes sure that we're taken care of. Linda recommended the lasagna and it turned out to be the best I've ever had. I pay a lot of attention to the intelligence of employees because it seems to tell you a lot about a company. Those horrible discount retail stores, like K Mart, 99 Cents Only, and Dollar Tree, for example, seem to hire people without any attention to intelligence. It seems to be a requirement that those employees be the most dysfunctional personality in their own family. Other companies, however, like Starbucks, Apple, and il Fornaio, seem to hang onto employees who know what you want before you want it. It takes a lot of training to get employees to that level, but it also takes hiring highly intelligent people in the first place. Linda and a couple of others at il Fornaio Carmel fit into this category. I love to sit in the coffee area in the morning and read the newspaper over coffee and a pastry. It's such a relaxing way to start the day. And when I finish and walk out the front door, it's just a couple long blocks to that great Carmel beach. The only complaint I have is that you end up getting sand in your shoes. Can't they get the sand off of that beach! I mean really! (Just kidding.)

Very disappointed tonight. Wait staff a bit in attentive. Had to ask for water and iced tea. Husband had Beef Tenderloin, was supposed to be med-rare, was barely rare. Good taste. His potatoes and spinach were bland, asked for balsamic vinegar just to have some flavor. My Pappardelle with mushrooms was nice. Too bad, we have had wonderful meals here in the past.

Super groovy restaurant. Carmel is a classy place, maybe a little too classy for a Seattle couple looking to unwind on the weekend. Il Fornaio hit the spot, we had a coupon from the hotel we were staying at (it adjoined the restaurant) which resulted in a great price for a great dinner. Lady had a steak and I had a pasta dish. Both were great and the desert was also. My favorite place to eat in Carmel... Make reservations online and ahead since this place packs in like most joints in Carmel.

Had a great evening here with my boyfriend on an over night visit to Carmel. Had never been to one before and was definitely impressed. We both had seafood that was fresh and fantastic. The plating size was perfect. The bread was served warm with herbs, vinegar and oil, which I am always pleased to see on the table and the beet salad we started with was delicate and delicious. The service was on point and the bar was speedy.

My husband and I held our wedding reception here. We had looked at other places but the atmosphere and people at Il Fornaio where the best around. Kim was so helpful in everything from setting up the menu to helping set up the decorations. She even called us a few days before to give us a heads up on the weather (we're in Northern California). On the day of the staff kept us on schedule to ensure we got in all the events we wanted to from first dance to the toasts. My guests weren't sure what to expect when I first told them we were having the reception at a restaurant. But once everyone got there they loved the view and everyone kept telling me how great the food was. I love lasagna and Il Fornaio has the BEST lasagna around. I even spoke to the Chefs afterwards to thank them for the wonderful feast they prepared for us. This is a great spot for small parties and receptions.

We dine here fairly often because the menu has a variety of selections that covers all the different tastes in our big family. The restaurant is also larger than most in Carmel, so on busy weekend nights, we still can usually get a reservation. The wait staff here are the best. Friendly (but not intrusive) and helpful and will gladly accommodate special food needs. The breads are wonderful and the desserts are usually yummy but the quality of the entrees is hit or miss -- several dishes we've ordered have been over-cooked: lobster and bass and gnocchi to name a few. The recipes tend toward the unimaginative, but still for the most part, we can always count on being well fed, well served, and we enjoy the over-all atmosphere of Il Fornaio.

It was not as good as I expect from years of eating at their San Jose and Palo Alto locations. Atmosphere nice enough, but the main room was dark. It was light on the enclosed dining area near the front where we sat w/ a 6:30 reservation on Labor Day weekend Friday. The food was okay - not enough vegetarian entree choices. His Calzone was disappointing, nothing like the hearty dish we eat at other locations. I was happy with my Barilotti alla Pugliese for $15.99 (from the menu: Whole wheat barrel shaped pasta with cherry tomatoes, arugula, dried ricotta, garlic and tomato sauce). The bread was warm and fresh, service fine, and dessert fantastic. Chocolate flourless cake was great, the Chocolate mousse Rosina al Cioccolato, fresh raspberies and sponge cake soaked with Triple Sec; served with orange créme anglaise made him happy.

Excellent Italian. Not the copy/paste as you can get everywhere else, but real Italian, sorry Sardegna food cooked according to local recipes. No fast food feeling, no "here is the bill" automatism as soon as you are on your second last bite. A culinary experience as you would have it in Italy, and yes, this requires more than the usual 45 minutes people tend to be willing to "sacrifies" for burgers and chips... So if you do not want to spend 2 hours enjoying a dinner, you better go to Pizza hut... However, if you want to savour nicely cooked Sardegna food with interestingly combined tastes and flavors, than this is the place to go!

I went back to Il Fornaio last week and had a much more pleasant experience. Instead of sitting directly at the bar we sat and one of the two tables in the bar area that the happy hour prices are valid for. (Happy hour is only available at the bar and at two tables in the bar area that have green table cloths on them.) The awesome thing about sitting at the tables was that we had a waiter instead of just depending on the bar staff. He was super friendly and was very quick to get our drinks and our food order in. I was able to order the Ginger Mojito because they had mint! It was good, but I couldn't really taste the ginger at all and the mint was not crushed up, it was just sitting in the glass, so that flavor was also missing. We ordered the Fradiavola and the Vegetariana pizzas. The Fradiavola came with Mozzarella, mushrooms, spicy sausage, cherry tomatoes, tomato sauce and fresh basil. This pizza was good, but it was really greasy, and the tomatoes just gushed seeds everywhere, very messy. The Vegetariana came with mozzarella, sliced artichokes, mushrooms, asparagus, olives and cherry tomatoes. I preferred this pizza over the Fradiavola, it was not as greasy, and the vegetables were very fresh, but the issue with the tomatoes was still present on this dish. After this experience I will go back to Il Fornaio for happy hour, but I will make sure to snag one of the table tops.

This is, after all, a chain restaurant. Located in the historic Pine Inn, one area has an ocean view and other tables on the balcony. Pizzas are a specialty, and are done well. The minestrone was weak, and, for some unknown reason, totally without salt. Service was attentive. The bread is exceptionally good, and the olive oil and balsamic vinegar are replenished on a regular basis. The meal was fine but nothing really special.

Okay, I was a little disappointed with this restaurant but not by much, this was my 2nd time coming to this location in particular but I prefer the San Jose location if I had to choose. First of all, there was some small pieces of who knows what in our water, my husbands glass cup was cracked all the way around (surprisingly it didn't shatter on him). The service was so-so, it wasn't as attentive as I wish it could of been. A manager had to sit us down because the lady who was suppose to be in the front was missing for a while. It felt a little awkward waiting around looking kinda stupid. I had ordered a chicken plate which was delicious, my husband in the other hand ordered the lasagna which was HUGE (totally shareable). I personally thought that the best part was the dessert - it was the trio which is worth it for $11 and shareable (took 3 of us to finish it). I had ordered a simple hot chocolate which was not good at all, I had to add sugar to it! weird. Overall, I would probably still return just because the location is cute, the ambiance inside is nice and the food was still good.

very disappointed once again but I thought I would try it again and once again service was extremely poor. we waited at our table for over 15 minutes before I flagged down a bus boy to please find our waitress - the gruff busboy poured our water by leaning in front of my friend instead of taking the time to go around -our chilled wine bottle we had brought with us was getting warm, when she finally showed up we asked if we could get an ice bucket and again it was another time consuming process and when that was finally brought she disapeared for so long that we ended up just pouring our own wine through out the evening- very classy. The food was tasteless - it reminded me of bottled tomato sauce and over salted and rubbery pasta - she did wave the corkage fee which we appreciated it but I'm so disappointed with the service and poor food - I will not be returning and my friends from out of town will never forget their memorable (and not in a good way) dinner at Il Fornaio in Carmel - so sad as it used to be a special place to go -have they changed management and chefs ?

Very good setting for a typical Il Fornaio. If you've been to an Il Fornaio, you'll know exactly what to expect from the food. This is no different, which is to say consistent quality at a fair price. The setting is lovely in the old Pine Inn hotel and the service is good. Tip: check out the cool Vintage Rolexes at the shop (Fourtane) on the corner outside the restaurant.

We have been to Il Fornaio in Carmel several times. The food is always good and the service friendly. I have two children and it is very comfortable to bring them here and still have an adult meal. The kids menu has healthy options and tonight they gave my kids pizza dough to play with while we waited for the food. It was a huge hit

Strange experience. My hubby and I have been to Il Fornaio in Sacramento so when we sat down and was asked "have you dined with us before?" I said "yes". We proceed to order our dinner in a fairly timely manner. After a very good calamari appetizer a young couple sits next to us. When asked they say "we are from Toronto, never been here". After some time the server brings them TWO appetizers that are "compliments" of the house. "Enjoy these on me" says the server. Nice, I think...a way to make an impression. Meanwhile I have an empty water and wine glass. Our entree's arrive, finally. We were not offered freshly grated Parm cheese and I had to ask for water but the food was very good. Meanwhile, the couple next to us gets served (fresh Parm for you?), eats, and then gets a visit from the MANAGER. She gushes over them and asks they sign their guest book. We are asked if we would like dessert but are full and decline. As we wait for our bill the couple gets served a COMPLIMENTARY dessert! I I am now in utter disbelief. While the food was very good, the odd treatment of a couple that has dined at restaurant (us) to the couple that has not (them) is not acceptable. Hence the one star. Get your priorities straight people!

We were driving up to San Francisco from LA, In a single day, taking the 1, Crazy I know... I know. When we arrived in Carmel we drove thru Carmel by the Sea to take a break and visit the Ocean.... We then decided we wanted Food.... Good local food. Used Yelp to find a place.... ll Fornaio was the choice.... Lets keep this short and... not so sweet. We walked up... Had no clue where the front door was... Super weird and it went downhill from there. We finally found the hostess and when she looked up and saw us, Normal hard working people on a long drive in shorts and a t-shirt and we instantly got the feeling "We don't belong here". She said it would be a 15 minute wait... So we went to the bar, and decided to order. The bartender was somewhat the same way the first few minutes, but warmed up after we ordered. Don't ask for "Fancy" Coffee drinks... they aren't Baristas.... at all. Don't go here if your starving and expecting mind blowing food... Expensive and small portions. All in all.... For Normal hard working people.... that don't find it necessary to "Dress Up" for a quick dinner... I wouldn't recommend this place.

Ramon was a great server. Unfortunately the food was below mediocre. The minestrone soup was salty and had no real depth of flavor. My boyfriend had to send his pasta back because of the lack of flavor. My vegetarian pizza was ok/good. We've been here so many times and we are bummed we had this experience! Probably won't come back.

Love the restaurant and love the coffee shop. I get my morning mocha here every morning. The guys, Sal and Milton are so helpful and make the best espresso drinks. My grandma loves a cappacino and says they make the best in town!!

I really wanted to like this place but was dissapointed. The service is great and they want to please you but everything they serve is very sparse portions. The salad was ok but gnocchi with mushrooms was very small with half a mushroom. I thought that was ridiculous but didn't feel like complaining. We ordered a beet salad which tasted good but was sparse and the spinach salad which was just ok. Anyway, pursue at your own risk.

We will return. My husband and I had a lovely lunch with two of their delicious salads. I had the Della Casa with Gorgonzola cheese and Rob had the Spinach Salad with bacon, and a basketful of fresh warm bread. We sat in the sunny porch, looking out onto flowers and a beautiful day. Service was excellent. We had 3 people waiting on us. Sitting with freshly brewed coffee at the end of the meal, Rob dashed off to the circular room, and returned with 2 cookies to dip into our coffee. We were full, relaxed and attentively cared for.

This review is strictly for the cafe, not the restaurant. First off, the not-so-good. Somewhat on the pricier side of cafe food, but that's to be expected in Carmel, but you get a good value when you order a beach box (sandwich, soda, cookie, and chips), but I'm more of a just a sandwich kinda girl and not a fan of soda, in general. Both my companion and I ordered the sandwich with the mortadella, salame, and provalone on foccacia. While it hit the hunger spot we were both feeling, the taste didn't "wow" either of us. I think if they added a more flavorful spread to it, it would be a lot more impressive sandwich (just comes with mayo). Also, if you get their sandwiches hot, be sure to ask them to remove the lettuce. Our sandwiches came out with some very wilted, bad tasting greens on them because they had been heated. My mocha was respectable, but again, nothing special. I'm a bit of coffee snob, so I wasn't expecting a miracle based on their set up. Il Fornaio is known for its bread, not its coffee (and the bread IS DELCIOUS!) Ok, now the good stuff. While the sandwiches were overly impressive, the ingredients (apart from wilted lettuce) were excellent quality. The room is an unconventional round shape with a huge skylight., and a huge round table in the center with bench seating and smaller tables around the perimeter. There's a fireplace going to get toasty, which is always appreciated in Carmel, even on "warm" days. The ambiance was quiet and peaceful, and we felt welcome to luxuriate in the space with plenty of newspapers and soft music playing. The staff were very polite and service was expedient at the counter, but the food took a while since it comes from the adjoining restaurant kitchen. All in all, not a bad spot for little gnosh and relaxing, just don't set your expectations super high on the foodie scale.

Went here New Year's Eve for dinner. The food was excellent! I really liked Pennoni alla Vodka. My only problem was the portion was way too small. I literally inhaled my dish. The place was dimly lit, decorated for New Years. My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner.

Group dinner in a private room on a Friday night of Monterey car week. Probably the first mistake. Second mistake was booking reservations at Il Fornaio. Same group had a dinner there last year that was very so-so. I only wish I would have recalled last year's dinner so that I would not have gone to Il Fornaio again. My mistake. Extremely slow, inattentive and indifferent service - why should they care, they had an automatic 20% service charge built into the dinner price. Still it really annoys me to order a bottle of wine and pay $12 to have it delivered to the table but never touched again by a waiter. Food was just plain bad. Salad was extremely ordinary - a bunch of greens with some innocous liquid substance that was salad dressing. Ordered NY strip steak, came rare as requested, but was extremely tough and flavorless even though it had a sauce on top that sounded good on the menu, but tasted like A1 sauce with vinegar. Requested salt and pepper (none on the table) to try to give it some flavor. Neither salt or pepper shaker worked without unscrewing the top as the salt was caked and the pepper grind was too big for the holes. My friends seabass was mushy - he indicated he spent a good deal of time on the toilet that evening after dinner with the runs. Bad, old fish in Monterey - pathetic! Vegetables were actually satisfactory - basic potatoes and broccoli/carrots, but nothing to write home about. Given all the great Italian restaurants in Carmel, I cannot imagine why anyone would go to Il Fornaio. I suspect the management/ownership is on cruise control at this place. Sad, as the place does have a nice ambience

Exquisite! My significant other and I visited my grandfather in Carmel and we enjoyed an outstanding dinner at ll Fornaio located right in the heart of downtown Carmel. The decor reminded me of a Pottery Barn catalogue; very classy, simple, chic, and elegant. The colors consisted of white, black, and silver. We began with a drink, the homemade bread, and soup & salad. The bread was amazing, very moist, fluffy, and flavorful (as flavorful as bread can be). My salad greens were quite fresh and green, and the soup was perfectly seasoned. For our main course, my grandfather and I each had the Branzino con Polenta, which was roasted seabass with garlic, green olives, tomatoes, and tarragon sauce with soft polenta surrounding the fish. Our meals were excellent and the seabass was perfectly cooked. My significant other had the Lasagna al Forno with homemade egg pasta noodles. This was the best lasagna I have ever tasted. Our waiter was friendly ensuring our water glasses were full and continually checked to see if we needed anything during our visit. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone spending an evening in Carmel.

We really enjoyed our dinner here. We stumbled on it by accident, and were very happy. There can only be one "best" for anything. For my wife, their Penne Alle Vodka was "Best Ever". It was a cold evening, and Il Fornaio was warm and inviting. Really enjoyed it.

We went there prior to visiting the aquarium nearby. Our first choice of Italian restaurant was closed on Sunday, so we ended up coming here. Since we came in from back, we were treated with a beautiful open courtyard that calmed our soul. We were seated to the other side of restaurant/hotel while the sunlight still lit the area. While we were waiting for our dishes, I ordered grapefruit juice which tasted freshly squeezed. The balsamic vinegar with olive oil that came with pieces of breads were also great. My wife normally prefers sweet butter, but that mix invigorated our appetite. Lasagna that I ordered was a little softer than preferred, and had less dense taste. My wife's penne with vodka-cream tomato sauce on the other hand was great. Normally cream sauce with bacon would make the dish to be way too oily and salty. Instead, the right amount of richness with pungent flavor of bacon was mixed into the pasta, and we were able to eat the dish very easily. When asked, a waitress told me that the pasta, the sauce, and the bacon were cooked separately, and mixed toward the end. Because of the lasagna and slow service, I would like to rate this place 4-star instead of 5-star. That does not take slight on the penne, and would like to try other pasta in future.

When we arrived we were selected to sit at the Table of Honor, where they had a special dinner for us and presented us with a guest book to write a note in. Our waitress was Barbara and we had one of the best dinners ever. I've posted some snapshots. Every dish was a surprise and completely delighted us. It was completely unexpected surprise. Bravo!

We arrived there at 6p before marathon sunday and the maitre d informed us that we wouldn't be seated until 845p! We needed to get to bed for an early wake up, but she said that we could sit at the kitchen bar. We took it! And what a great idea! There is an open kitchen and this provided us with endless entertainment! We sat next to the main windows where the food came out for the waiters to give to the tables. We got to see everything on the menu before ordering--which made my decision very difficult! They gave us bread to start, oil and vinegar for dipping. It was getting really busy after we ordered and it was so interesting to watch the chefs at work (and 2 large parties being served)! There were 3 working the main grill, a pizza maker, a salad maker, chefs for the party, sous chefs in the back! A lot of action! Our food was excellent! Spinach ravioli with sausage stuffing and a chicken pasta special. The only thing was that we saw our food come out, but the server was so busy that it just sat there for about 5-8 minutes before we got it....so it wasn't piping HOT, but warm (I like piping hot food!) Overall, dinner and a show! It was great! :)

Despite being part of a chain, Il Fornaio in Carmel provided a very pleasant dining experience. The staff was exemplary as was the decor. The food was tasty and well-prepared, but definitely not worth more than 3 stars. In other words, good but, nothing special. Our waiter was an absolute delight, making us feel as though we were the only couple in the room. Il Fornaio is always a safe bet for a good meal.

We have for years enjoyed this great restaurant. Linda, John and Matt, the management group, work well together to assure we always enjoy our dining experience. The ambiance is just right so you can relax and share the good times with friends and family. The chefs and cooks are very good - the food is consistently creative and delicious. The bartenders and staff's members are professional and know how to take good care the patrons, too. It is more than just about the food and libations, it is really about great management, their staff, and the other patrons, like yourself, that you may meet along the way...smile... We are locals who have been consistent patrons of this restaurant since the beginning. Michael and Vondra

What an incredible meal. Our excellent server, Rod, brought so much life to the evening. Without flinching, he catered to all of our special requests. The bolognese gnocchi was out of this world good. The cannelloni al forno was one of the best Italian dishes I've ever had. Will return here every time I'm in Carmel.

First why 4 stars for a "chain" restaurant - because I have been to Il Fornaio several times, some with people who are not familiar with the chain and they have always been shocked when I break the news. This feels like an indie, European classic, cozy restaurant. Carmel's Il Fornaio has both Euro cafe and high end attributes. The resulting cool/casual, cozy elegance is classic California and you will feel like you are sinking into a friend's dining room. The wait staff is very attentive and skilled. The food is spot on, many of the pasta dishes have been referred to as "the best I've had". They also serve breakfast for some of the nearby inns and the breakfast is excellent. When in Carmel for a long weekend, add Il Fornaio to your list - it is a quaranteed warm and cozy experience with a tasty meal.

I would definitely come back. My cousin and I came here for lunch around 2pm and sat in the outdoor patio with my dog blueberry. Service was slow at first but once they noticed us it was good. The bread came out warm with good olive oil & balsamic vinegar. We ordered calamari, pizza (with mushrooms, shaved parmesan, prosciutto, white truffle oil, and arugula), and penne (with mushrooms, bacon, and strips of pork). The calamari was the best I've had. Plenty to satisfy 2 people and perfectly fried (not too heavy). Huge pieces of squid unlike other places that only give tiny uniform pieces. The portions were generous too. We were very full just from finishing the pasta & eating 1 slice of pizza each. We had more than 1/2 of the huge pizza to take home. I LOVE Carmel.

Went here for my birthday with the bf. He told them it was our first time dining and it was my bday. We walked around carmel a bit, found this place, made a reservation and came back for dinner. It was not a busy night. Our Waiter was not friendly and after bringing us our beverages he goes to the next table.. " Have you eaten here before?" Other table: no first time! "Oh well you will have some complimentary appetizers". WTF I was so furious I wanted to leave. To do that in front of another party is immoral especially when its a special occasion for us! But we decided to stay and try to enjoy ourselves. My dish wasnt amazing, it was the beef cannelloni, meat reminded me of ground beef, flavorless and dry, pasta was decent, sauce was good. Bf got the lasagna, standard lasagna. Got tiramisu for dessert, was alright. Waiter only check on us one and that was to see about dessert. We received no comp aps or a birthday slice of something. Highly disappointed. Waste of money. I wish I would have eaten somewhere else for my birthday. Needless to say, we left no tip.

***PRIVATE EVENT REVIEW ONLY*** Our company has hosted a client event during the Pro-Am for many more years than I have been with them. In years past, there were always hiccups of some sort. Communication with the former event manager was not always effective, and while the parties were never ruined, they could have gone a bit smoother. Leah, the new event manager is pure awesome! I worked with her for 3-4 months leading up to our event and it was by far the best one yet! We used the private room, which included the entire outdoor patio and fit our 100 guests comfortably. Food, staffing, planning and spacing, she listened to what we wanted and delivered results. I like results.

Have been here the last few times I've visited Carmel. The coffee-shop and pastries are quite tasty. Not very difficult to screw up a mocha, but this was lovely- not TOO sweet. Dinner was great. Very quiet, traditional italian with decent portions and warm bread. Nice ambience as well...

Eeeeek! My meal came out wrong; the server/bus person asked me about my income and, "do you live here? How much chu pay for rent?" Huh? That's rather forward and rude. And impolite! Will not be going back. Who needs that kind of intrusive dialogue with a poorly made omlette?

I have eaten at Il Fornaio several times and it never fails to impress! The atmosphere is bright and cheerful and the staff is very attentive and professional. Our server, Lale, promptly greeted our table and was quick to make recommendations and answer our questions on the menu. Her knowledge of the food and the wine seemed top notch and she always wore a warm, friendly smile! Our meal was wonderful and we will definitely be back again!

Just came here for the 2nd time within the past month to visit friends and I must say I was certainly not disappointed both times. First night, I was surprised to see the restaurant wasn't so crowded and mostly pretty empty. However, the more quieter ambiance definitely didn't deter from the outstanding service and food we received throughout the night. Our kind waiter generously served us their delicious, fresh-out-of-the-oven bread and their menu and "festival" menu that they had available for the first two weeks of December (not entirely sure what it was for, but perhaps to celebrate the various foods of different regions in Italy and for the holidays?). The "festival" menu was in a three-course format which I decided to do and was pleased with my choice of doing so. As my first course, I chose the pear salad which was just the right amount of sweetness and satisfaction that left me excited for the next course, in which I chose the parpadelle. The parpadelle pasta was flawless; the texture was smooth, chewy and made it feel like it was homemade, which I wouldn't be surprised if it was. As for my third and final course, I chose veal which was blanketed in prosciutto and served with mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables. As I had been getting full from the previous two courses and the bread, I was only able to eat half of it. I saved the rest for my next day's lunch, which brought me back to the previous night. Overall, really enjoyed my meal and everything was beautifully presented and brought out at just the right times from a great server. I couldn't wait to come back here. The second time around, I was again surprised, this time to see the restaurant BUSTLING with families including children and their friends all gathering to eat and drink, as well as watching the 49ers vs. Patriots game (being an Albuquerquean, I remained neutral). I was surprised earlier that I managed to squeeze a last minute reservation online through OpenTable for me and my own family on this busy night and that we were able to be seated right away (again, great service). We had a different, more younger server who was also very friendly and had a great sense of humor which was evident in his brief yet comical banter with my father. Although the "festival" 3-course meal was still continuing at this point, my mother decided to go with 1 course, specifically the parpadelle to my recommendation and my brother with the seafood risotto. My father ordered the pasta bolognese and I ordered the vegetarian pizza. Since it was busier that night, we didn't expect our food to arrive as quickly as it did last time for me, but they still managed to deliver both in good time and good meals. Prior, we also had the calamari (who doesn't get calamari in Monterey?) and for dessert, we ordered their version of creme brulee and the apple crepes a la mode. Personally, I preferred the apple crepes but my brother really enjoyed the brulee. Again, I was pleased to see that I had another great experience there and even more so that my family had one as well. If you're looking for a warm family/romantic/friend-oriented atmosphere with great Italian food, exceptional service, a clean-cut bar, and a bakery to bring home more of their delicious bread, this is definitely the place to be.

I've had several family dinners here over the last ten years, all with generally positive memories of food and service. Our last family trip, though, didn't impress. Il Fornaio's service and atmosphere were fine. Our waiter was attentive, and the noise level of the restaurant was low enough for us to carry on a conversation across a big table. The food really left a lot to be desired. My brother ordered the lobster, which was served cooked like a catcher's glove. Two of the pasta dishes ordered were served overcooked. My mom ordered the duck, which was the table's winning dish. My rib-eye was tasty, but who orders steak at an Italian restaurant? The dessert tray scored higher reviews, but I can't recall what anyone ordered.

Located in the middle of the shopping and dining district of Carmel this classy Italian restaurant is larger than most in Carmel. I also noticed by checking out the other Italian eateries in town that if your not big on cuisine that is a bit more eclectic and like more traditional plates this is the place for you. The dishes are more fine dining than the Olive Garden per say but normal in comparison to other places in the area. They serve a good bread basket with olive oil/vinegar for starters and the service is very good. The prices are good, the restaurant is classy looking and you don't have to be dressed up to go there. For starter we shared a Caprese salad which is tomatoes topped with fresh mozzarella, basil and wine vinegar. For dinner I had the spinach ravioli stuffed with sausage topped with Italian cheese and tangy tomato sauce. It was very good. Next time I'll try the penne pasta with vodka sauce.

Congratulations, Il Fornaio. You get my first 5-star rating on the peninsula. Like you need it. Best. Happy. Hour. Ever. $3 beers, $5 pizzas (DELICIOUS!!!), and $5 TOP SHELF cocktails. ZOMGTOPSHELF!!! It's been quite some time since I could afford to buy more than one top shelf cocktail at a decent establishment. Also, there wasn't a server covering the happy hour area, but Suzanne (I think?) was tending a bustling bar AND attempting to wait on tables. Suzanne (I think?), you are AWESOME! I can't wait for an excuse to head back here for happy hour. 4:30 - 6:30!

So, I really love Il Fornaio as a restaurant I have had fabulous experiences at the San Francisco and Beverly Hills location. This location was atrocious. The hostess was incredibly rude. We walked in and waited 5 minutes for the hostess to say anything to us and she acted as though she couldn't be bothered to do her job. I wish i had caught her name. The server Barbara was also rather rude at first and rushed us through ordering. When I sent back the under cooked chicken she started to be nicer and acted like a decent server toward the end. My girl and I are youngish and have piercing/tats which is not typical in Carmel, it is a bunch of older, rich white people. Now the hostess and sever were extremely nice to the people that fit this description. The next morning we went to the bakery there as we had 2 5 dollar coupons from the hotel we stayed at. We stood there for 5 or 6 minutes in front of the pastries and the two girls were just chatting to each other, not working, ignoring us. So we left and went somewhere else. It is a shame that the Pine Inn is attached to this place. I get way better service at In and Out than I did here. The hotel was super awesome and everyone was nice but avoid this Il Fornaio, especially if you aren't rich and white looking.

This place has split reviews, and so is mine. I am a local and go there for their "passporto" dinners. One time a month there is a meal highlighting a special region of Italy, the food is from there. This is what you go for at Il Fornaio. My friend and I have been going there for several years. We know where to sit because of the service. (It can be--unfriendly). We know the hostesses and they are very nice. The manager, after seeing us for years has only come over to the table once and said hello. The service can be slow. Once we made an order, early, at 6 for a friend. She waited and waited, finally had to leave before the order came. Now for the positive. This special menu "Passporto" is fabulous. The best risotto ever. The best seafood liguine, salads, appetizers are on that menu. There can be other perks for going to the passporto meals. So---it's a little tricky to review. We know the hostesses, they will sit us at the table with our favorite server, and we know which menu to order from. But, if you're not from Carmel and just walk in you're taking your chances. (FYI: on the regular menu is minestrone soup which is vegan. My son, the vegan, loves the place, because of the soup and that they adapted a pasta for his diet.)

Maybe it is because there was no hostess but 5 waiters standing around. Maybe it was because there were breadcrumbs ALL OVER the banquette and table they sat us at. Maybe it was the cocktail napkin still sitting on the table. Maybe it was the stale bread in the basket (shocking, I know). Maybe it was the very nice server with such a thick accent I couldn't understand a word of his Spanish, I mean Italian. Maybe it was because the inside of the door to the ladies room was so dirty it was black (a magic eraser could fix that in no time flat). For all of those reasons, even though the food was good, I have to take down my rating from 5 to 3. :(

Over the years we have eaten here many times on our annual family trip to Monterey. We keep coming back because we like the food and the service. This June, I was surprised to find that we had mediocre food and service. Our waiter seemed to have no idea how to speak much of anything, the food took a long time, it was not good. When I tried to politely note that the meal was not up to the usual standards, I was very nicely given a free dessert - after I had already ordered and eaten a dessert. This was all very well intended and poorly executed. Oh well. I wonder if this is just a one time bad experience or the new norm.

Thought we were taking our bride-to-be somewhere special. Service was slow, and server was frenzied and unfriendly. Worst of all, the food was bland, from the unsatisfying squash soup special, to the oily penne, to the gnocchi so overlooked as to be unedible. I watched one friend discreetly spit out a bite of poorly cooked white fish she tried off another friend's plate, whose response was "I was hungry, so I ate it." For my part, I had such a bad tummy ache that I needed alka seltzer after.

Having a destination wedding in Carmel-by-the-Sea we had to find a restaurant that we new and trusted and could handle our reception, but even more importantly we had to figure a way to fit it into our budget without sacrificing our love for great food and festivities. We found that with Il Fornaio!!! We had our wedding reception in the Ocean Avenue room and on the Ocean View Deck this past weekend and I am still amazed at how great a job they did!!! The event went off with out a hitch. The bartenders and wait staff were top notch and our event manager Leah treated us like one of her own family and made sure that every little detail was taken care of!!! The FOOD... We had a selection of appetizers that were to die for especially the variety of pollenta and individual caprese. As for the dinner we wanted to make sure that it wasn't the normal buffet style cold wedding food, so we went with a fixed menu made up of filet, chicken, salmon, and pasta and to say the least we were NOT disappointed!!! My wife and I cheated and shared the filet and the pasta and they both were excellent but the filet was the best bit of steak that I have ever had! Everything was cooked to perfection! I would strongly recommend Il Fornaio in Carmel for any event!!! Leah is the best planner ever and takes care of you like you are her own son or daughter! She is the absolute BEST!!!

great place for lunch either in the restaurant or in the cafe. At dinner: really speedy in and out. Good wine selections. Food probably made ahead and heated up. Restrooms needed paint, replace hooks on the doors, etc. Happy hour M-F VERY popular!

This is my favorite place in all of Carmel by the sea to stop in for a latte and a breakfast sandwich while reading the paper next to the fireplace. They also have a deck to enjoy on a sunny day. Leave the crowded coffee houses on Ocean to tourists, stop in here for a quiet morning break

Ah, Il Fornaio. I love the concept. An Italian chain run by Italians, in direct response to crap like Olive Garden. Sure, it might be pricey and lucky folks in SF might snub it for their secret local restaurant treasure, but in the grand scheme of things, the food is good. Even better in a touristy and conservative town like Carmel. I'd been here a few times before and had good food and decent service, so when I was in town helping my parents celebrate a 50th Anniversary (!), it was the best choice for a special dinner. And Il Fornaio didn't disappoint, despite the potential for the problems mentioned in other reviews. I made a point of explaining the significance of the evening when I made the reservation, and the staff clearly paid attention and made a note of it. When we arrived, the harried hostess perked up, with a "Oh yes, it's the R. party!" We got a great table, served by a great waiter. The food was good, the wine was well-paired, and the dessert satisfied everyone. The pacing was perfect for a "special dinner" and the fact that some members of the party had lighter entrees was not a problem. With a few drinks, dessert, and coffee, the bill went into the $50/person range (i.e. too close to some of SF's finest), but the complete package was worth it. Thanks for helping me pull off a great anniversary dinner.

Even though I went to the one in Seattle and said I would never come here again, whoops I did (only because its only the affordable Italian restaurants in Carmel!) My boyfriend and I were being cheap and only ordered an appetizer and entree. We got the Caprese as our app. I loved it! My boyfriend thought the tomato was bad and is still talking about how bad it was. But I thought it was good. For our entree we got the butternut squash ravioli. It was...interesting. I'm a vegetarian and besides meat, I pretty much will eat anything. I ate the ravioli, but didn't necessarily enjoy it but didn't dislike it. :/ But I must admit, I'm soooo obsessed with their bread & olive oil/vinegar!!! If I could I would eat their bread & dip with wine every single day of my life!

We went here for dinner on our anniversary weekend and it was fantastic. As we were seated and looking at the menu, the manager came over to us and told us that we were chosen to be the "table of honor" for the night. He went on to explain that each night then chose at random a table and give them a sampling of appetizers and dessert. They also had us sign a guest book. It made the night super special. On top of that, the service and atmosphere were great. The food was excellent as well. Certainly a solid place to go... especially if you get luck enough to be the table of honor.

We had an excellent meal here. I had the Ravioli all Lucana with pecorino cheese and a spicy tomato sauce. There were many flavors that kept hitting my palette throughout the meal. We started with an organic heirloom tomato salad and an organic baby green salad which would have been very plain by itself but complimented the tomatoes beautifully. Caution: don't overeat the delicious bread they serve before and with the meal. My date had the butternut squash ravioli which was unspectacular for me, but if that's your taste, it was passable. The wine list was impressive. Service was good and overall atmosphere was great. The joint was jumping so if you prefer quiet and intimate, don't go here. We really enjoyed ourselves.

I don't know why I keep coming back to this place; went again this past Wednesday -- big mistake. We waited for at least 10 minutes after being seated before the server even came to acknowledge us (no, they were not that busy). But okay, time to move on and enjoy the evening, right? They are running a special "Tuscany" menu (this was in addition to their standard menu that is pretty much in every Il Fornaio in the country). We all ordered off of the special menu thinking, hey, since they are promoting it, and its only for a limited time, it might be better than the usual suspects-- second big mistake; everything was over-salted and under-whelming. And I don't think the servers care much; ours never came back to ask how the meal was, or if he could get us anything else--we were pretty much left on our own once the over-the-top-salty-dinners arrived. The only redeeming quantity was the bottle of wine that helped mitigate a bad choice on where to dine.

We stopped by for a after dinner desert while I was in Carmel celebrating my ex's bday. Plain and simple, our service was not very good. In fact on one occasion, our server returned to our table while she was chewing food she'd eaten. We were only there to enjoy desert and coffee, but for some reason our server took a really long time to take our order. While we were trying to decide on what to order she didn't know which deserts were better than others (who works at a restaurant and doesn't know what the desserts taste like). I initially gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe I was just being overcritical or perhaps she was just busy or some other excuse, but after 15 minutes of waiting for our check I finally got up and went in search for her. I finally found her at the bar eating appetizers with her buddies. Overall Experience: I've visited other II Fornaio establishments and have had pretty positive experiences, however, this one had issues. Thumbs down.

Extremely slow service (45 min from ordering to serving), chicken breast that was raw in the middle, fatty cuts of meat, mediocre pasta, and and an unconcerned and absentee staff from waiter to manager. Manager eventually comped us dessert to make up for food shortcomings (had to go for a walk to find him) only to take another 40 minutes to serve up a simple tiramisu. Further conversation with manager about excessive delay to serve a basic dessert was met with a blank face and a mumbled apology. Surprising that this restaurant can exist in Carmel with so many other great options.

I was there this past weekend for a Company event and had a wonderful time, even though I was working. The staff was very attentive to all our needs and gave wonderful customer service with a smile. Whether it was the bartender keeping the clients happy with drinks, the waiters/waitresses constantly bringing out fresh food and clearing the plates, or the manager stopping in to make sure everything was running smoothly. The food was very good. From the prawn cocktails, baked Bleu cheese risotto, pizzas, prosciutto, fresh fruits, sausage, to the fruit tarts, all was fresh and had excellent flavor. Il Fornaio in Carmel will definitely get my business in the future and I cannot wait until next years event.

In re: the restaurant. I have only had breakfast here. I really enjoyed breakfast here, but my experience has created some problems for me. In particular, my experience here has made me willing to stab you in the eye with a barbecue fork in order to get more of their french toast. There are a lot of tired Yelp cliches I could use to describe my desire for their french toast, ranging from drug references to onomatopoetic words connoting devouring, but I like to believe I'm above all of that. So I will simply say that I will commit aggravated assault on your person with a deadly weapon and the intent to cause grievous bodily injury if that's what it takes to get some of their french toast in my mouth RIGHT FREAKING NOW. Sorry, I'm better now. Please be aware that they are not truly open for breakfast every day. Saturday and Sunday for sure, maybe Friday, definitely not Monday. On other days, they have a "buffet," consisting largely of cereal and maybe some pastries, but definitely not any french toast, which means you are of no use to me, and why oh why do you taunt me so? What have I ever done to you but love you and your delightful french toasty goodness? You are so cruel...... In re: the bar. Great bar selection, and they make a great martini. And they have a violet-infused grappa that is really intriguing. The bartenders are fantastic, not simply because they pour good drinks, but because most of them are long-time locals with great stories and excellent suggestions about how to spend your time (and money) in Carmel. A good time in the bar usually leads to the need to, very quietly, come in and have breakfast the next day. And thus does the vicious cycle of life perpetuate itself. In a most delightful way.

Food was great, service was less than we expected. This was the second time we visited this restaurant in the last 6 months...and the food quality was consistent between our visits (very respectable). But the servers need to stop by to check on us ... we saw the servers when they took out order, brought our food, and when they brought our check. We had to get up and ask someone to bring us more drinks. We kept looking at our server hoping he'd notice us, but kept looking elsewhere. They have a good location and good food, but need to make sure they don't destroy what they have because of the lack of service.

A Day in My Life. Theme - Getting over Jet Lag, Part 6 I got to Il Fornaio at 7:00 PM. There were no seats at the bar, which is usual for a weekend. I saw Patrick and we ordered drinks standing at the end of the counter. Il Fornaio seems to be a recession-less business. The rest of Carmel can be quiet and devoid of life, but Il Fornaio, the bar and the restaurant, is always busy. I like coming to the bar here because the atmosphere is festive, people are friendly, the bartenders are awesome, and I always see people I know here. Happy hour is great because drinks are reduced and there's free food to munch on at the bar - thing like pizza and various anti-pasta. Patrick and I talked about his trip to Paris. He had a great time there with his girlfriend and the early evening drifted away with the constant hum and chatter surrounding us at the bar.

Yes, it's a chain, but all of our salads, appetizers, and entrees were very good and the service was great. Our waiter, Salvador, was one of the best in recent memory.

This review is for Il Fornaio as a site for my sister-in-law's rehearsal dinner. We had a private room upstairs which accommodated over 50 people and had a beautiful patio space with ocean views. My mother-in-law worked with Kim who is the events coordinator at IlFornaio and she had only great things to say about her planning experience. Kim let the engaged couple taste whatever they wanted on the menu, which was very generous, and made everything really easy to plan including figuring out flower arrangements for the table, heat lamps, etc. The staff was very attentive and service through the evening was excellent. It was a great space to socialize and felt intimate even though we were 7+ tables of 8 people each. One star off for food - which was decent but not stellar. Portions were substantial though...no one left hungry I'm sure. Overall, highly recommended for wedding rehearsal dinner and events in the Carmel area.

I forgot to mention that we were here last week! It was a last minute decision. The kids love to color with the colors and paper provided by the establishment...and, oh ya, the good was superb! I had a small salad--on a diet the kids had pasta--what else and my husband had the same..it was a simple night but still the food was really amazing..that's it!

I have been to Il Fornaio in a couple of different cities and have always had a great experience. Most recently I went to the Carmel location for dinner, and then again a couple of months later for a wedding reception. The food here is pretty outstanding. I am totally obsessed with butternut squash ravoli and theirs is hands-down the best one I have had. They are like clouds of sweetness in my mouth. I had the filet mignon at the wedding reception and it was everything I hoped for. It had a wonderful flavor and melted in my mouth. Really, you can't go wrong with Il Fornaio. The price is right, and you leave feeling like you paid a fair price for an exceptional meal.

Had not been in years. Tonight it was excellent. Scampi with pasta was outstanding; like getting two separate courses on one plate. Gnocci were tender and delicious The mushrooms and arrugula on rha carpaccio tasted like hey were picked today. They have been inconsistent kn the past butredeemed

Il Fornaio was not on the agenda when we headed into Carmel but as we stood outside considering it as an option a man approached us and said to"come in and give it a try." He didn't work there and said he ate one meal there every day. He ushered us to the hostess stand and said, "this is my cousin from NY, get her a great seat" while pointing to my mom. 2 minutes later we were lead to our table. It was a neat experience and the food and wine were perfect.

OK I know. It's a chain. Yeah yeah spare me the grief. Let's try to overlook the corporate conglomerate aspect and focus on what really matters - the food. I have been to many Il Fornaios (Seattle, Walnut Creek, Palo Alto) and this is simply the best. My husband and I started celebrating Valentine's at the Carmel location back in college because, well at the time we couldnt afford an expensive place because we were still in school, and we kept coming back for sentimental reasons, and well, because we love the food and atmosphere. We usually order a pizza Martguerita as an app, and I particularly love the lobster ravioli, and my husband usually orders one of the many rotating specials. They always serve a large portion of fresh baked breads, and they keep refilling it too! I love sitting in the "little room" with all the windows to the south of the restaurant, its very cozy there. They also have some booths in the back that are very comfortable and romantic. We've been here countless times and love it every time. If you can get over the fact that it is a "chain" restaurant, just go and have a good time. They have a nice bar also. And the location is very close to the beach, perfect for an after dinner stroll.

Authentic food, terrible service. Went with my parents who were visiting from abroad and we didn't have a good experience. The atmosphere of Carmel is beautiful but the restaurant doesn't make you feel as special as you do walking on the city's streets. We had the gnocchi pomodoro and the pennoni and the food was very good and everything was fresh. I'm not sure if our waitress was in a bad mood or if she simply didnt like us. Despite her being rude there were plenty of moments when we needed help and she was behind a column eating something or didn't even notice us. When we ordered the espresso it came with a sugar block. My dad can't eat sugar and I asked her for sweetener. She replied: "There is a sugar block by the cup". Do I look like my vision is impaired or something, being a 22 year old? I didn't even want to tip but I though I would be acting just like her so yeah she got her tip but I won't ever come back. They have good food, but there are tons of places in a 0.5 mile radius with food as good as Il Fornaio but with awesome service. In time, we are not picky people.

The bread and water were good but that was about it! We were so disappointed. Our Ceasar salads lacked flavor and had no dressing. My vodka pasta was not bad but the portion size was small and I ordered the large. My nephew's risotto was lousy. It had no flavor and the risotto was not made properly. The service sucked! We were ignored the whole time. We had to flag down bus boys every time we needed something and our empty salad plates were never picked up. Our server sucked! He was in a hurry the whole time. We gave him a lower tip for his behavior! I don't think we will be returning. If we do, maybe just for happy hour as they do have a good happy hour, cheap eats and drinks! So many other good places to eat in Carmel! This is not one of them!

We had a party of 18 high school kids dine for their prom dinner at Il Fornaio. They made a personilzed menu due to several of the kids with food allergies and gave them a special room with a beautiful fire in the fireplace. The kids said the food was delicious. The price for all that was provided was very reasonable and Kim, the catering manager was on top of every detail. It made for a really nice event.

Oh Suzanna. In thirteen years you've made maybe five Bloody Marys and I unfortunately ended up with one. But only after my date alerted you to our thirst. We were directly in front of you and our neighbors were too. But you needed Joe's constant help to keep us fed and our glasses full. Thank you, Joe. You're on top of it!

3 strikes and I'm out! Not a tourist giving this review. 3 times in a row we've been utterly disappointed with this place, so we are done trying. Used to be great, but isn't now! The lasagna was disgusting-sitting in a puddle of grease and practically liquid pasta. Margherita pizza had maybe 1 piece of basil and tomato on each slice. All the other pastas ordered were bland and uninspired. Not fit for foodies!

Great food at a friendly price...we wanted to eat affordably and didn't expect to find it in Carmel but... Il Fornaios did not disappoint, great seafood and chicken dishes, well prepared and excellent presentation... We felt like royalty and enjoyed our meal. If you are on a budget and in Carmel try Il Fornaio's for a meal you'll remember.

Because I was with a group, I didn't use Yelp to lead me to a quality restaurant. Unfortunately, Yelp was right again. Lasagna was a bit bland, Veal Scallopini was too tart and lemony Good portions, servers were accommodating. But for the price, and the location, not up to the task. A bit too pricey for the quality of the food.

Tried to eat here on a recent trip. Two women, driving up the coast and we were snubbed that they did not have any room and could not possibly seat us that night. It was early and the restaurant was EMPTY. Only 3 tables seated and no one waiting. I find it fortunate that we were turned away from this place and found a good meal else where.

The hostess set up a special table on the porch near the front entrance to accommodate our golden retriever during dinner. The evening was particularly busy due to the holiday weekend, but we received exceptional service. The food was excellent as always. I just had my 50th birthday dinner at the Il Fornaio in Walnut Creek. What a wonderful, dining experience. Our waiter and the rest of the staff are true professionals .

This review is not for the main dining room for Il Fornaio although my Mom has eaten there a few times, I have not. This review is for the Il Fornaio cafe, next to the main dining room. It is a wonderful little circular room with a huge center wooden table filled with the day's newspapers and magazines. You can order coffee and a pastry or bread. Or perhaps, their oatmeal (before noon and delicious) or their minestrone soup (after noon and delicious). Then just sit down and read, eat and relax. It is much cheaper eating here than in the main, tableclothed dining room and also much more relaxed and fun. I think that you can order from inside the dining room (eggs benedict, YUM) and then take it in here. Not totally sure about that though. So if you are looking for a CHEAP alternative to the high priced restaurants on the main street of carmel, Il Fornaio cafe is the place.

We ate here last night and it was our first time-it was great. Our server Rod, was awesome. He brought out different dishes for my wife and I to try and they were excellent. Try the squash ravioli, they are fantastic. We will be going back for sure.

Food was great but the service sucked. Our waiter's name was Tao. We had to ask for our water to be filled each time. He never brought more bread without us asking either. He also blatantly didn't bring us the check with our coffee when we specifically asked. To top it off the hostess told us it would be a 30 min wait when it was more like an hour. Not worth the expensive prices for such poor service.

You need a reservation during the busy season. They are terrible at paying attention to you- I had to wave down the waiter more than once to get water. They are way too expensive for the quality of food- it is fine, but I can make something 10x better with De Cecco and sauce at home for $5, not $15. No one liked their dish- the bass was dry, the gnocchi overcooked, the sauce lacking (I think they literally opened a can of tomatoes and boiled them... and nothing more). The bread was good, but this is often hard to mess up. Vegetarian options are sorely lacking. Not worth my time, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone. They even try to bribe people to "Like" them on Facebook by giving free dessert to customers who do. It's sad.

very good food, good service, we made reservations for a Saturday rush hour so we managed to bypass any wait time we would of run into if we were walk-ins. noise level was a little high, but managable

Just fine. Had some decent service - the food was just a notch above chain Italian places, but the atmosphere was pretty fun. My wife and I didn't want to do a bottle (and this place wasn't really offering much) so we did by-the-glass, and everything we had was pretty disappointing and not particularly cheap. Oh well. On a cute street in a cute town, but I really couldn't see us coming back for any reason. I had a caprese salad which was OK, the mozzarella didn't taste fresh, but it was alright. The pasta dishes we had were decent, if not slightly under-seasoned (keep that parmesan coming!). OK, there's probably better around but we didn't see much.

What a fun Happy Hour usually from 4:30- 6:30 with a pretty inviting Happy Hour Menu that features a nice selection of cocktails and wine. I always have a great time with my friends at Il Fornaio's Happy Hour :D

This rating is based SOLEY on their "dog friendly" status. Simply put, go somewhere else if you want to dine with your doggy. We had called ahead to confirm their dog-friendly status, arrived on time only to find the patio area is not set up at all to accommodate anyone. There is a very large space with lovely open views, but they aren't utilizing it. They squished 4 tables in the walkway between the front steps and this large patio and attempted to seat us there. However, there's no room for a dog, plus no patio heaters for a chilly Carmel evening. We asked if we could have a table moved over to the patio heaters on the patio. The hostess mumbled something about 'sure, please wait". And we waited and we waited. Then we left. Too bad. Il Formaio, get your heaters in working order, string some outdoor lights, put some outdoor music on and throw tablecloths on your tables and WALA! You'll have a lovely outdoor patio with dog-owning patrons looking for a lovely Carmel dining experience.

Love their espresso, their desserts-- creme bruele is my favorite (better than Casanova..sorry guys). Excellent place for a date or bday lunch/dinner. went here for brunch and got the omlette dela casa (asparagus, salmon and goat cheese) very tasty... their whole wheat toast is soft, warm and delicious (I love the nutty flavor) Get your coffee when Sal is the barista (he makes some kick arse lattes!!)

This is a review for the bakery/cafe - adjacent to restaurant. Best cup of coffee in Carmel IMO. Excellent ambiance, plenty of sitting and even a flat screen where a game of some sort is on (no volume so it's not annoying).

I think only a handful of places were open on one of the coldest Christmas Days in Carmel, and Il Fornaio was one of them. They took reservations on opentable.com but E-Santa decided to be an E-assmunch and not award online dining points (aka the Asian Cheapness answer to credit card mileage points) for dining here that night. Even before 6 pm this place was packed. All the visitors and tourists almost had no where else to linger. It was like New Yorkers feeling lost, desolate, and depressed without their Seinfeld or Sopranos fix. Or the cast of Cheers without a watering hole during a holiday. And it turns out they all flocked to Il Fornaio because that was the only "wine bar" in town that served full fare. Tucked away on Ocean Avenue and Monte Verde, inside the Pine Inn, is the restaurant itself. As chainsy as this place is, I.F. managed to deliver on Christmas Day and made the whole operation feel like it was local flavor. Also props to the restuarant for not offering a prix fixe shizzbull kind of deal like a few of the other tourist ripoff joints. It was a scaled down version of the menu with pizzas, pastas, salads, entrees, with a few twists of the holiday flavors (including a pumpkin based dessert which I can't remember).

  • Rachel B.

The service was a bit slow. Granted, it was happy hour and pretty busy. We got a lot of food for the money and it was a great deal. $5 dollars each for good sized pizza's and carpaccio and wine! A great $5 dollar happy hour menu.Over 50% of a discount on the food that is offered. Fresh tasty and we stayed within our budget. The noise level is pretty high so don't expect a quiet romantic atmosphere.

We ate here the other day and did not feel welcomed. The service was cold and unattentive. The food was great but the service was poor. I really like the inside of this restaurant but they need to step up the service. We'll probably never go back but the food was good.

Gotta hand it to this chain: they deliver. My sister and I drove from San Francisco down the coast on Christmas Eve, basically trying to avoid the holidays. I was recovering from surgery, and we were hiding out from friends, family and holiday cheer. Essentially we were in the Christmas protection program. Once appropriately disguised, we headed into Carmel on the afternoon of December 25th, and stumbled upon this lovely place. We were not disappointed. While a chain, this place gets it right--some lovely, bright Italian whites for $30/bottle or so; crispy, perfectly cooked calamari (if a skimpy portion); and crusty, earthy bread right out of the wood-fired oven. The spinach salad with bacon is highly recommended--decently portioned and yummy. The atmosphere is classy without being stuffy and the service is similar. Next time you're in Carmel (I won't ask why), head here. P.S. And when you're done with lunch, grab a cookie or two to go in the adjoining bakery. Heavenly.

Il Fornio is my favorite restaurant ever (the one in BH is my FAVE). In very good competition with Piatti's. Similar plates. I always get the caesar salad. I know, so simple, but I munch on the appetizers and the dessert! Always return :)

Food was terrible for the price. Service was bad. Felt could have had better service if we were rich or , at least rich-looking, and/ or white. We were seated at this table in the middle of nowhere, no table cloth (only table with no table cloth). Looks like a buffet, serving table, maybe. Overall experience, not good. Restaurant-wise, Area-wise.

Restaurant very busy last night so sat at the chefs table. Waiter did not have a good grasp of the English language. Overall food was good. Antipastio was fair portion a little meager. The bruschetta soggy tomatoes were microwave on top of bread which were then served warm. Different but not traditional. Spinach ravioli very good. Sauce excellent consistency very nice. service fair

Nice atmosphere, thanks to the beautiful, historic Pine Inn. The food is ok, nothing impressive. This place is a chain, after all. Service was decent, but I agree with others that some of the staff apparently left successful careers in astrophysics, hedge-fund management and feature-film production just to work in this white-linen diner.

We ate here on September 26, and as it turned out, unfortunately it was late, and we shouldn't have. First, the service was friendly and attentive and one could not complain. We sat at the counter (unfortunately the health department required a glass panel to be installed between the counter and the kitchen) to watch the food being prepared. The cooks were friendly and explained what they were trying to do while cooking. Second, however, the food was not up to the usual quality of this restaurant, which is one of the test restaurants for the entire chain. We started with what was listed as capresse (Caprese Vine-ripened sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil, drizzled with basil-infused extra-virgin olive oil ), and from the entry it sounded like it would be a bufala mozzarella, but instead of using sweet basil, the dish was served with Thai basil (serrated leaves, and it has a sour taste), and was not served with any olive oil. In sum, the dish not only tasted wrong, but bland and dry. One of our main courses was a seafood pasta with lobster and other seafood (shrimp, mussels, scallops) in a tomato sauce. Although the pasta, and the seafood other than lobster was cooked very well, the lobster was left under the broiler too long, and was stringy and dry. The other main course was what the manager claimed (who noted she had never eaten it before and wanted to try it that night) was a mildly spicy black pepper cheese spaghetti (the cheese I think was described as pecorino rustico). What arrived, however, was spaghetti with cheese containing special imported chili peppers, and was very hot. The chili essentially overpowered the sauce. The pasta was cooked perfectly. Although we like eating and watching the kitchen, I am not certain we will be back in the near future without trying some of the other nearby Italian first.

I have come here three times. The first time we had a pretty good meal so we came back again. the pizzas looked good so we ordered a margherita pizza. It was just a cheese pizza with a few wisps of basil on top; very disappointing. They said that was no mistake, that's how they make them. Last evening we went in at 5 PM. They would not seat us with no reservation even though the place was not even half full; said they were booked. I think they could have made room. So this has gone from being maybe a go-to place for us to a six month boycott. There are lots of other restaurants so maybe we will find another and won't ever come back.

Food: They don't have too many vegetarian options but wow I love their butternut-walnut tortellini! Amaaaazing. Dog-friendly: we sat out on their patio with our dog. Atmosphere is very nice, I like the place. Surprised to find out it's a (small-scale) chain....you'd never tell by looking at the inside of the place. Clearly the owners care about it. Everybody in our group loved the place.

we had my sisters hs grad party there and due to our large party, we had the "rotunda' room all to ourselves. It was great! Awesome service, delicious homemade bread, and fairly good italian food. We brought a fair amount of own own wine and the corkage fee was $15 a bottle, kinda steep. It looked as though it turned into a cool hot spot as we were leaving. The bar was going and music was playing. fun fun.

Comfortable place. Not too stuffy or stuck up. Decent food. Waitress was awkward, argued with another staff member in front of me, tried to take my food away before I finished and make my ice cream/gelato desert choice for me before I realized I had a choice of flavors. Highlight was bread and gelato. Had a decent cannelloni. Hubby says was alright

Don't care that it's a chain. It's just a really cool place in a great location. The food is very good and is appropriate for the setting which is definetly upscale but not so much so that it's obnoxious. The bar is very nice (and long). I love the community room in the back that serves quick breakfasts and coffees. Super comfortable. Not astoundingly expensive. The kitchen is very accommodating with special preparations and the service is excellent. I do not want to have read the nutritional information on the house bread. I just want to eat it in blissful ignorance. Might try the upstairs hotel some day.

In Carmel and after having too many shee shee dinners just wanted to have a great pizza. Asked around and was told Il Fornaio was the spot. Once there i realized this was that elegantly lit rest on the 2nd floor that i always could see from the street and wanted to try. Had the prosciutto pizza. It was good but not 18 dollars good. And for that price they need to put enough prosciutto to cover the whole pizza- not just half. To be fair, with my complaint they did add more- but it should have covered it from the start. I then had a spicy seafood pasta. All in all, a good restaurant but for this price, there are much more charming restaurants to choose from in Carmel.

WHY do they not have a lower rating than a 1star on this thing!!?? anyway, this il fornaio is THE WORST il fonaio in the world omggggggggggg&i shit you not hellooooooooo.....!! :( but then there's nothing else really good to eat in this little teeny tiny microscopic 4X4 blocks worth of 'town' that is carmel.....so this place, i'm sure, is always packed with all sorts of tourists&super hungry travelers, who prob can't find any place better to eat (not that they would even know) that's actually open after6pm. cuz god knows everything in carmel closes at6pm SHARP!! all the galleries, souvenir shops, other tourist traps, &post office (&whatever else) are CLOSED at exactly6pm......not6:03pm, not 6:30pm. the town shuts down at6pm on the f'in dot and i shit you not about this. except, i guess, clint eastwood's bar would still be open after6pm, which i think, is the ONLY BAR in town....but anyway, this il fornaio is soooooo soooooo soooooo BADDDDDDDD. maybe that's why i didn't even bother to review it. but anyway, wow.....it's like this: the one in beverly hills is england and the one here is zimbabwe, which would explain why it's soooooooo damned HOT inside this place too- good lord....!!

We waited an hour to be seated for dinner in a tiny dark spot in a corner, that was available the entire time we waited. When we were finally seated, we waited 10 minutes to receive our menus. The food was very unremarkable. The pizza was terribly salty. The pasta was bland and tasteless. My father said the Lasagna was the worst he has ever had. It was not worth the calories and this restaurant is very over rated. The pizza at Demetra was far superior in quality. Little Napoli at its worst is 10 times better than Il Fornaio.

During a recent stay in Carmel, we stopped at Il Fornaio for lunch. The weather was just gorgeous so we opted for outdoor seating. Right off the bat, I liked this place. The outdoor seating is located on a second floor surrounded by beautiful flowers. There was just enough shade to keep you cool and enough sunlight to allow you to enjoy the weather. Our server was very attentive and made sure our glasses were always topped off while we devoured our calamari, goat cheese and smoked salmon thin crust pizza, and ceasar salad. Also, I've been going through a lemonade phase and order it everywhere I go, and this place made one of the tastiest I have tried in the last three months. Kudos to the place.

Heard about this happy hour from a restaurant in Monterey. Decided to walk in with my husband to check it out. We ended up having dinner at the bar as a happy hour treat! From 4:30-6:30 they have $5 wine and drinks, $3 beers, and all appetizers are $5 (which one is regularly $14.99). My husband had the vegetarian pizza (which was huge and had fresh veggies and even asparagus). I had a flat bread that had goat cheese, smoked salmon, capers, onions, and fresh dill (which was an added flavor). Absolutely delicious. The chardonnay on the happy hour was a great pour and was great too! The bartender (a guy who appears to have been there for a long time) was very nice and quick. We ordered a tiramasu from the regular menu to top it off, and called that dinner. Yummy!

This a great place for some fine italian dining. We went on a Friday nite for a friends birthday. The place was packed with what looked like a lot of tourists, after all Carmel does attract a lot of tourists! If you are looking to bar hop after dinner I highly recommend driving to PG or Monterey because the three bars we walked to in Carmel all had about 5 people in them and they all looked above the age of 35.

I had my wedding reception here in 2007. We loved the location with the patio and banquet room. It was so easy and non-stressful. Each guest had 4 entree choices that could be decided during the event. We didn't add much decoration, just the standard centerpieces from a local florist. The room doesn't need it with all the windows and the flower boxes out on the patio. Due to the size of the room, we had to keep our guest list small. That made it tough but it also kept our budget in control. Eugenia, the event coordinator, was easy to work with -- very accessible.

Yet another Il Fornaio in the Bay area, but this was the most pleasant I've experienced. Maybe it was the glorious day in beautiful Carmel that did it. We had a late lunch after spending all morning on the beach. The food was great, service was very attentive. The french toast with mascarpone cheese was just awesome.

White table cloth version of Olive Garden. What a huge waste of my hard-earned dollar. Vegetarians and vegans, don't even bother trying. Find a way to get a table at Casanova in Monterey-- where you'll find real Italian food and then some. With so many Italian eateries in the area, I couldn't be more sorry that we wound up here for our anniversary meal. Also, if management bothers to read these...please note that you have a waiter that speaks so loudly that I nearly had to walk out. The problem spanned our entire meal and the folks seated next to us on each side leaned over to commiserate.

Yes, I know it's a chain. Yes, I know I was in Carmel and there are lots of other cute little places to eat. But this just happened to be what caught our eye enough to warrant sitting down to lunch. They also have a little patio that looked super inviting on a rare warm day. After waiting a couple minutes for them to clear the table, we were seated and quickly asked what we wanted to drink. Their fresh delicious bread was brought soon thereafter, and held over our appetites until our lunches arrived. I had the chopped salad, which was delicious! Super fresh veggies and my only suggestion would be to add more blue cheese. I asked for vinaigrette instead of the blue cheese dressing though, so maybe with the original preparation it would be fine. A very pleasant meal enjoyed sitting in the sun in Carmel, what more could I have asked for?

This review is based on service ~ which was horrible and non-existent! After waiting 20 mins for someone to even approach us with menus or to offer drinks/appetizers we finally had to flag someone down and they said they would get our waiter for us. He approached the table and practically rolled his eyes as if we were bothering him! The food was okay and the waiter got 2 out of our 9 orders incorrect. He never checked on us after bringing our food, the only time he came to our table was when we had to stop him. Not sure we will be back ...

Like the Tobi Keith song, it ain't as good as it once was. The bar is still a great place to lounge, with its great baked bread and top shelf booze. But the food has been on a steady decline with each visit. Will it do for a decent meal? Sure. Will it make you give a standing ovation to the Chef? Absolutely not. It is what it is and what that is is... a nice looking place to get an average meal. I suggest stopping at Il Fornaio for drinks on your way to some other eatery in town.

My husband and I loved our meal here. Good caprese salad and fabulous ravioli!!! John got butternut squash ravioli (which I didn't want to get because I figured you can get it anywhere....nope...it's waaay better.) It was SO good. I will probably get that next time we're there. I got a pear gorgonzola ravioli. Also soo good. I was checking out all of the dishes around us and everything looked amazing. The pasta took a while to come out, (which was great because we were on a romantic weekend getaway and it gave us time to talk and enjoy one another...) but our waiter was embarrassed and insisted on giving us free cocktails. What could be better? Great food, great service, great spot. We will definitely be back!

lunch on a recent mid-week day on the sun drenched patio was wonderful. service was prompt and pleasant with little requests fulfilled with no problem. food was good, fresh and tasty. the dessert tray brought by was too difficult to ignore. was surprised to find the zabaliogne on top of sorbet, but it was good anyhow. they also have a bakery/bread shop a bit farther inside into the hotel where you can buy those yummy, fresh, il fornaio baked goods. nice, relaxing meal with good food. can't go wrong.

5/18/2008 UPDATE... I went to the il Fornaio website the day I wrote my original review and wrote them some feedback about our experience. I was eventually contacted by the "Executive Assistant" who said she discussed the issue with the manager of the Carmel location and he would address it with his staff and he would follow up with me. Several weeks went by and I hadn't heard from the manager so I telephoned the Executive Assistant to discuss my experience with her and find out why I hadn't heard from the manager. She was very open to hearing about my suggestions etc and she did remember my initial email to her from the web. She said she would call the manager immediately and have him call me ASAP. Within 15 minutes I received a call from the manager, we discussed the problems (he remembered our party so he was aware of our issues). He apologized for the experience and lack of service and invited me back to visit when I return to Carmel someday. He sent me a $50 gift card good for any il Fornaio which was a nice gesture. I will be back in Carmel in August of 2008 so perhaps I'll stop in to give that location another chance. Here is my original review... +++ OK... here's the deal... Il Forniao is a good restaurant, BUT, this last weekend (April 18th, 2008) my family and I did NOT have a good experience. On Friday night, we had about 50 family members gather for my cousin's 50th wedding anniversary. We had a private room which was very nice... we tend to be the "loud family" so I'm sure the other clientle were happy we were off on our own. "Off on our own"... yes... that's kind of what it was like... left to fend for ourselves. For 50 people, we had 1 (ONE) waitress and BARELY 1 (ONE) bus person. The waitress was EXCELLENT, BUT, there simply were too many people for her to take care of! My aunt had to wait 30 minutes to get a glass of wine. The bus person would come in and look around, but never came by to fill water or remove unneeded plates etc. (I'm really not sure why he was there... the server pretty much did everything.) At several points during the night, I walked around with the water pitcher and filled people's glasses. I also went around and gave "ground pepper" to those at my table who needed it. All these jobs are typically done by the servers at Il Fornaio. A couple of times a man in a suit popped his head in, looked around and left. I assumed he accidentally came into our area, but eventually I realized he was the manager. At 9:05, he popped in again and I called him over. I told him I was from San Diego and I had been a regular customer at their Del Mar location. I explained that many of us had arrived at 6:30 and that it was "9:05" and we had NOT RECEIVED our main meals yet!!!!!! I pointed out that there was only one server and little support from the bus person. He said, "originally, your group was only supposed to order pizza and beer." "OK" I said, "That's fine... why then were we given full menus??? If the kitchen can't accommodate 50 people, why allow a group that large to book the room?" He said he would check on the kitchen, and soon afterwards the food arrived (in fairly warm fashion) so we finally were able to eat. The manager never came back to see if we were satisfied or if we needed anything else. He could have avoided this review if he attempted to help out, but he disappeared. He also could have made a lot more money that night if he had sent in a cocktail server every so often. From a business perspective, their whole process was a fiasco. On top of the lack of service (again the waitress we did have was EXCELLENT), we were charged an 18% "Banquet Fee"... the server said it "wasn't a tip but a fee to use the room." Well... in my opinion, we would have been better off going to Pizza Hut!!!!!! To sum it up... The Il Fornaio in Carmel was DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!!!

It is a fairly casual environment, but it can be a bit noisy with large groups. We didn't have a reservation so we ended up sitting at the chef's bar. We waited a while to get our food, but we didn't mind the wait since we enjoyed watching the chefs preparing all the dishes. I had the Quatro something pizza and it was very good. I thought it would be 4 different ingredients (basil, ham, artichoke, and mushrooms) all mixed in, but they were separated into 4 different portions, interesting and delicious. A couple of things I didn't like: my glass of water (regular, not bottled) had a slice of lemon, but they didn't peel the paper label off the lemon. I told them I didn't want the paper with my water, our waiter just took the same water back w/o the lemon..I could have done that.. I noticed that when they got busy they used a microwave oven that was concealed under the grill to reheat what looked like lasagna. I guess it's not a big deal, but kinda disappointing to see that some dishes were premade and zapped. They also used the one pizza spatula(?) for everything in the brick oven. I'm not usually that picky about my food being prepared clean, but using the same spatula to pull, push, flip everything including food (actually touching the food), logs, and plates didn't seem like the best idea.. overall, good atmosphere and good food. my only suggestion is that if they aren't going to be super clean about preparing their food, don't bother having tables in front the of the chefs =P

I've heard a lot about this place so thought we'd try it to celebrate my birthday...too bad the meal didn't stand up to the reputation. Started with an appetizer...Costa Smeralda...grilled shrimp, calamari, and scallops with a parsley sauce. The plate that arrived was anemic..all white with these sad fish and a dribble of sauce. The scallops were ok, the shrimp undercooked and the calamari was cold and rubbery. Not a good start to the meal...at $13.99 to boot. Next was a salad...Cuori Romana...romaine with pecarino, caesar dressing and tomatoes. Tasty but nothing out of the ordinary for $8.50 per plate. My husband got the Pennoni Castel...pasta with pork, bacon in a cream sauce...very heavy. I got the Branzino ($23.99)...sea bass over polenta with a red sauce and green olives. The polenta was sooooo boring and flavorless that I left it on the plate. The red sauce was very uninteresting marinara, the olives were sliced and 4 put on the edge of the plate (now that's creative!!). The fish was nice but hardly worth the price. My husband got a beer and with tip we spent $100! It would have been better to go over to Monterey and get a fish taco at Turtle Bay and saved ourselves a chunk of change. What really made the meal a disaster was the large crowd that stood at the bar right where we were seated...nothing like trying to have a relaxing conversation when someone's butt is right up against your table and others are hovering behind your chair. Needless to say, we won't be going back to Il Fornaio...a lot of money for a really boring tasteless meal.

food is somewhat consistent among il fornaio restaurants. the staff here, however, aren't so nice. the hostess had an especially bitchy attitude, which i was obliged to give right back. i honestly couldn't remember much about the food because i was so displeased with the service.

Il Fornaio has a wonderful ambiance. Not sure why, except to say the warm wood floor, open kitchen, two fireplaces, big open windows, black and white photos of early Carmel, the big open seating plan with lots of defined places to sit (not a bad table in the entire place), and the huge rotunda room all set in an historic setting is a place to be seen. Locals, tourists, celebs all make the scene. The food can be great or unfortunately sort of ordinary. Just depends on what you order, but the bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar are always great. They have a good wine list and make delicious mixed drinks. Desserts are all wonderful and their espresso. This is a good place to bring a larger group and out of town guests. It can get busy between 7:00-9:00. The restaurant is open all day.

Having eaten at other Il Fornail locations over the years, I looked forward to dinner at the Carmel location. While the hostess was pleasant and accomodating we had to ask for service before anyone came to our table. Bread was served without butter, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Once we got our busser's attention he served them. My spinach salad didn't seem to have been tossed as the spinach leaves were dry. The spinach was fresh and tender. In general the salad was okay but not very flavorful. My pizza was quite disappointing. One quarter asparagus, another slivered mushrooms, a third artichoke hearts and the fourth prosciutto or ham. None of them were very flavorful. I was reminded of Domino's. The pizza crust was thin and flavorless with no apparent caramelization. Very little sauce which was almost dry, as if the pizza had sat for quite some time under heat lamps. Our server was aloof and didn't check back nor did she comment on the fact that I ate less than half of my pizza. Clearing the table she piled the dishes up before taking them to the kitchen. All in all, a disappointing experience. The general feeling was indifference and carelessness. What a ripoff! Olive Garden would have been much better!

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner with his uncle and two kids. His uncle picked this particular restaurant because as a former Carmel resident, he'd been there quite often and remembered how yummy their food was. Boy was he shocked when all three of us adults got our food and it could only be described as "okay." They didn't have his favorite dish on the menu anymore (though he hadn't been in a few years, so he didn't hold it against them), which was the first disappointment of the night. I ordered their minestrone, which isn't hard to mess up since it's "Peasant's soup" and you can put whatever you want in it as there's no recipe. Unfortunately, it was the most bland soup I have ever tasted. My boyfriend's chicken wasn't that great either. I can't remember what his uncle ordered, but he was incredibly disappointed. That being said, they were very nice about the kid thing and the fact that the 2 1/2 year old cried for no reason for 10 minutes, so they get an extra star for that. The hostess, who was about 10 feet away from our table said she didn't even notice Sedona crying, which was good. They also had crayons and things for the girls to color, and they brought their pasta within 10 minutes of it being ordered. We liked the atmosphere, and it would be good for a date if the food were better. The bf's uncle figures they must have recently gotten a new cook, or the really good one was off for the night or something. The bf and I live in Chicago, but the bf's uncle lives in Salinas and said he wouldn't be back. It was definitely over priced for what it was.

I have been coming here with my family ever since I was 3 years old and it has failed to disappoint. Its in a really nice part of Carmel, walking distance to the beach. The service here is always phenomenal, and the waiters and waitresses are really friendly and pacient. One time my dumb sister broke the table lamp and they brought out a new one with out the slightest bit of remorse. The food is well prepared and served with in a reasonable amount of time. My favorite item on their menu is the Pizza Margarita. Me being a pizza addict, this is the mecca of all thin crust pizza. Their pasta is also really good, they prepare the sauces really well so its always hot, and their french fries go great with just about anything. Oh yeah and sometimes John Madden goes in there, I've seen him there once. That's when you know the restaurant is good. John Madden.

Had a dinner reservation here one night, and I had the best Gnocchi I have ever tasted in my whole life! The service was excellent and people were friendly, food was amazing, I am looking forward to when I can go back and try more of their menu. If you are in Carmel you owe it to yourself to eat here, it should make your trip to Carmel even better. Wine selection was also good. Be sure to try the Gnocchi! Word.

Excellent happy hour food menu. 6 items for $6. It is small but great selections. Tried calamari and it is super good and the tomato/ marinara sauce is very fresh. I love the margherita pizza. Service is great and "Line Cook" SAUL always delivers tasty high quality food.

Went here as our fancy dinner on a trip to SoCal and it went better than expected! It started out a little iffy with the main entrance being unclear and the front seat attendance not being very attentive, but it only got better from there. As our waiter seated us, he told us that we were chosen to receive some complementary bottled water and appetizers. Though the water may not sound like much, it was actually really crisp and refreshing. For our appetizers, we received a sampler platter of Bruschetta, Salami, and Caprese and a plate of the Butternut Squash Ravioli. It was all incredible!!! I definitely recommend the ravioli to share. (We also enjoyed a lovely glass of Pinot Grigio with our meal). My boyfriend ordered the three course taster off of the monthly menu. For his appetizer he got the Salmon Bruschetta, which was good but a tad oily. For his first main dish, he chose the Linguine. The noodles were cooked al dente which he really liked. And for his final course he got the swordfish. It was cooked really well, but we weren't in love with the sauce. I only ordered the Linguine Mare Chiaro, a seafood pasta. It wasn't my favorite dish, the shrimp was slightly over cooked and the sauce left something to be desired. However, the scallops were nice and the mussels were okay. At the end of our meal, we were surprised with a complementary dessert, some sort of banana custard over peach sorbet? And it was delicious and left us with a really pleasant taste.

3.5 stars The interior is quite nice; it doesn't feel like a chain. We walked in and were seated in a comfortable side room with a nice view of bright, beautiful flowers on the patio (it was too cold to eat outside that day). I ordered a pasta dish - Cannelloni al Forno. It consisted of pasta tubes stuffed with chicken, mozzarella, sun dried tomatoes and mushrooms. I enjoyed it but it was nothing special. I also had a scoop of guava passionfruit sorbet after dinner which was superb. It was light and refreshing while having a strong flavor. Service was average; a bit slow but he made up for it by being very personable.

Dinner for 5 on New Year Day (6:30PM seating). Have written a few reviews and this is the first 'upswing' in rating in 2.5 years! This is the Il Fornaio we like to go with family and friends (not the 1-2 star one of recent times..) Seated immediately at a table next to front door (when you make reservations ask for a table away from the door- on cold nights it is both cold and noisy near the front door). Daily menu was limited in offerings, but all of the dishes ordered had good flavor (pasta was a bit dry on two dishes). They need to work on presentation - food was 'gooped' onto the plates without much care. Bread was delicious and warm as always. Service was a bit slow but waiter was friendly and tried to be helpful (it would be better if they introduced themselves and knew the menu better). Limited white wine selection given all of the fish and pasta dishes - need a few more Sauv Blancs (less Chards), a Pinot Grigio and some white bordeaux. Wine prices are good.

Il Fornaio was recommended to us by the Inn we were staying at, as a pet friendly Resturant. We wouldn't usually take our large dog on our anniversary dinner, but since he was diagnosed with cancer, we didn't want to leave him. When we called to make a reservation we let them know about our dog and they said it would be no problem to sit us on the patio with heaters. Yet, when we showed up they said the heaters were broken (the hostess had a big attitude). We decided to leave when he manager came out to talk to us. She was incredibly helpful and sat us inside next to a window where our dog sat. The manager gave us a complimentary appetizer and dessert and checked on us often. In conclusion, the food was amazing and the manager made up for the poor front house communication.

For many years Il Fornaio has been my go to restaurant for meals with out of town visitors. I kept returning because it was perfect in every way, not fussy, good food, good service - a favorite. Not any longer. I had a noon lunch reservation for 7 yesterday (a Sunday) to entertain 6 relatives from England. We all managed to arrive at exactly the same time, the table was ready and as always, sparkling. We were, at that moment, probably the only people in the restaurant. Then it all ended. Placing our lunch order was difficult. and there was only one tiny basket of bread on a huge table for 7 people. I only counted 2 waiters and getting the right one's attention was not easy. The food arrived in stages, finally leaving 6 of us ready to begin dining and one poor cousin sitting with no food. There was an uncomfortable delay until she was served. That, essentially, was the end of "service". No checking on "is everything OK?", no replenishing the tiny bread basket, no water refills for the long empty glasses and no way to order a second round of drinks. I'm handicapped, but I struggled to my feet to try and signal anyone. It was then that I realized that there was a football game on which was proving far more interesting than the table of 7. When one of the waiters came over I told him that we might like a second round of drinks - he immediately barked "I don't know what you want!". He was so loud that the whole table recoiled at his attitude and a discussion ensued as to what to do about it. Nothing was decided. He took a couple of orders and grumbled off back to his football game. No dessert menus were offered, but several of my party wanted desserts. We finally managed to get that sorted out. I'm British, my guests were British. We're supposed to be famous for bad service in restaurants but this was a new low. All I could do was respond with what I consider a minimum tip. I'll bet I wasn't even credited with OpenTable reservation points!c

My dinner at Il Fornaio was very good but there is a lot of competition in Carmel. So I would say solid meal but won't necessarily come back. What did stand out was the staff. The restaurant manager who greeted me and my waiter were very welcoming. The waiter recommended the pasta special which was a large rigatoni noodle with tomato sauce, a rustic crumbled sausage and eggplant. It was good but felt like something I can easily make at home. And the tomato sauce did not feel like it was much better than jarred sauce. It lacked that roasted, slow cook feel I look for in an Italian restaurant. (The $10 spaghetti and meatballs I get at my local pizza place does this better.). And the flavor of the eggplant was hard to pick up. So again, pleasant atmosphere, decent food, correct pricing but nothing that wowed me.

My family and I (wife and two toddlers) needed a quick, family friendly, place to eat while out and about in Carmel By the Sea. By family friendly I mean: kids menu, acceptance of children, and a couple high chairs. :) Il Fornaio was our place of choice mainly because they made it so easy for us to just sit down and have a quick dinner. The food was standard at best. I ordered the Fradiovola pizza which was just sort of tasteless and came lukewarm. I don't even remember what else we ordered because it was that forgettable. Service was fine, again, not memorable enough to comment on. Il Fornaio wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It exists in that strange nether-region of blandness that restaurants fall into when they just don't seem to try anymore. I can't say don't go here, and I can't say definitely go here. So I'll just say: if you're walking by, are hungry, can't decide where to go, and other local favorites aren't open...stop in, have a drink and an appetizer maybe.

Good food with pathetic service. Went here at 5 PM, they were not too busy, plenty of tables were empty and the people who are supposed to take your order were standing around talking to each other. We got a table, and nobody showed up for 20 minutes. We should have walked out but decided to give them a chance. Finally the person who came to serve bread went and told one of the waiters why they are not serving us and finally someone came to take our order. We ordered a pizza and a pasta and a beer and wine. They served the pasta and wine and said it will take more time to serve beer and pizza! But they could serve people who came and sat down after us! After 45 minutes of sitting there with a wine and pasta, we asked to see the manager. She said she will check. That's it. No apologies or anything. She did not even have the courtesy to come back and check on us again. Very unprofessional. We got out after 1 hour and 15 minutes. Total waste of time.

Visited this place for 2nd time & I must say, service was unpleasant. Perhaps I was dressed too casual, however it was noticeable how other customers were treated with kindness & courtesy. The waitress was supposed to bring bread out & must've forgot, when she tended well to other patrons. Food was ok, perhaps it was the unpleasant service that made me decide never to go back to this place. I give it 1 star because atmosphere in Carmel no matter where u are at is beautiful. Good for me had very little flavor, needed lots of salt, pasta was dry.

I thought this place looked nice, but the service sucked. Took forever to bring us our drinks, appetizers and food. My family seemed to like their food, I on the other hand didnt. I ordered a Ceasar salad, took a few bites and didn't think it tasted that great. On top of that it had hair, I mentioned it to our waitress and she brought me another one and that ended up having a bug. Of course she gave us attitude, so never again will I be coming here.

You know that stress you feel when you are on holidays and are trying to find someplace to eat, but you don't know where to go? I hate that feeling. We were recently in Carmel by the Sea in California... sorry to stop the train of thought, but if you have never visited Carmel by the Sea, you need to go asap! The coast is beautiful and this European style village is very charming and fun to visit. Where was I? Oh yes, we were recently in Carmel by the Sea in California and happened to be hungry. As we traveled up and down the streets of this very cool little town, looking for someplace to eat, we felt that awful feeling of what to do, where to eat and what to order. So much stress and vacation is supposed to be relaxing! Fortunately for us, we made the right decision as we finally found ourselves at The Pine Inn and their Italian restaurant, Il Fornaio. The Inn is a step back in time and the restaurant is beautiful. The only downside is that there are a few different points of entry and it was a little confusing to know if they were even open for lunch. After seeking out an employee and learning that they were open for lunch, we were sat at a table. Our waiter was amazing. So polite and attentive to our every need. He gave the feel that we were VIPs in a 5 star high dining establishment. My wife ordered the Pennoni Alla Vodka and I ordered the daily special of Pecorino Romano Gnocchi with cream sauce. My wife's meal was absolutely delicious, but paled in comparison to the daily special. Those gnocchi were light and fluffy and cheesy in every bite. I would order it again and again and again. We had one regret. When ordering, the waiter gave us the option of ordering a lunch portion or an appetizer portion. In hindsight, we should have ordered the appetizer portion. The food was good and filling. We did not regret this choice at all. In fact, We would go back time and time again and would probably order the same dish! Everything was very authentic. In fact, sitting next to us was 6 older Italian women all speaking Italian! My only tip, don't order their Italian bottled water at $6 a pop...tastes like nothing special. Other than that, Il Fornaio is a hit!

It was just ok breakfast. I loved the potatoes the most everything else was mediocre, but the little coffee shop on the way out was great. Well I am giving an additional star for the reason that manager of the restaurant replied on my review offering to give it another try. Being a business owner myself I appreciate when any feedback taken in consideration. Whenever I'll visit Carmel-by-the-Sea I'll come by to give it another try :-)

We waited 15 minutes to get drinks, food took 45 minutes and this was at 11:45 with NO LUNCH RUSH! It seems this place has declined RAPIDLY. The food was edible at best. But $30 for a piece of salmon and angel hair pasta when you have the same piece of salmon for $20 on the menu is a HUGE rip off! My "chopped pieces of chicken" we're chicken tenders with the tendon still in it. We will go back for happy hour cocktails but won't be eating here again.

Delicious lunch on the patio. When it got cold outside, Tony the Greeter found us a warm table indoors. Tony was superb at customer service and found us a nice table where our service dog could sit under at our feet. Great guy and natural born story teller. We went back for one of the best dinners ever. Home made Lasagna by an Italian Chef who is the real deal. I had Sea Bass with Rosemary which was light and delicious. Sit at the bar for great service. I eat at the Il Forniao's in Palo Alto all the time because it is next to my office, but I must say, the location and dining experience in Carmel was exceptional. Do not forget to have some dessert. They have an outstanding menu. It's as good as it gets.

Not sure why this particular Il Fornaio gets such uneven reviews, because as a small chain of (higher end) Italian restaurants, it is extremely solid. We made a booking online, and were greeted promptly at the door. The restaurant is located in the main area of Carmel, and was designed very comfortably. The food was great. We had a few appetizers to share between us, and everything tasted very fresh, like it had just come off the vine. Mains were good too. Fish was fresh, and the chicken was seasoned well, and good too. We were stuffed so no dessert...this time. Service was friendly and attentive. Olive oil was topped up, as was bread and water regularly. Not sure why others have had problems at this branch, but we enjoyed our visit. Recommended!

We've been accustomed to coming here for lunch or dinner whenever in Carmel for a long weekend but that ends now. The only reason this isn't a 1 star review is because our table service was actually quite good. The food, on the other hand, was disastrous. I ordered my usual il Fornaio fave - conchiglie al pollo pasta - which was next to inedible given lack of flavor. I'm not one to use salt at meals but ended up loading up my plate of pasta with salt and chili flakes to mix in some semblance of taste. I barely made it through a third of my plate. My husband ordered the special pasta of the month with meatballs and while not as devoid of flavor as my plate, his still lacked seasoning and the meatballs (the size of nickels) were dry and flavorless While we are discerning eaters and considered sending our plates back, neither of us bothered knowing that the next round would come out just as bad. Kitchen needs rework and some better training and prep.

Best cannelloni in the whole world. Trust me. Go there. I am Italian. Pizza good. Butternut squash ravioli delicious. Go. Go now.

So good that we came here for dinner twice in a row. I'm a sucker for bread and butter so I'm glad they serve that, with oil and vinegar. The penne pasta with bacon and vodka sauce is amazing. And their tiramisu is perfect.

Great Italian food. Friendly waiters and fast service. Ordered the capresse salad which had a very delicious basil infused olive oil giving it a wonderful taste. The rosemary bread is very good. The ravioli was very good but lacked salt for my taste. Vodka pene had a delicious bacon flavor.

What a breath of fresh air, the food was excellent , the service is the best I have experienced in a long time. This restaurant has a small bake goods shop and the attendant is by far the best part of this restaurant Jenny is a gem she makes you feel welcome. Rob the waiter was attentive and courteous. I hope their restaurant in LA is just as good

Wow..................great place to get a coffee and a bran muffin. The woman that was there when I visited went out of her way to make a great coffee and heat the bran muffin. On Sunday morning there are lost of papers to read and lots of locals

The location is convenient, but that is where the positive ends. Started with our rude server. When asked about their beer selection he recited so fast he couldn't be understood. When asked to repeat it his response was "I already told you." Took a long time to get the beer ordered and server paid little attention to us. When our salads came he didn't offer to pepper them for us. He just dropped off the plates and was gone in a flash. May be this place is suppose to be like those places where the servers are suppose to be curt and rude. I just expected it. If service was the only issue I would have given a higher rating, but the Cesar Salads ($12.75) was dry, warm, small and was one of the worst I've had. Main courses were okay, but not what I expected for the price. As far as I'm concerned the poor service, substandard salads and cost makes this a place to avoid.

First off: Renee the hostess was awesome' so happy and helpful , LOVE her! Server was nice but don't remember his name since he pretty much abandoned us after we got our order. Bartenders were not good. Drinks horrible and they certainly were not happy campers. Gotta love this job ladies or get a new gig!

Well Il Fornaio is the Best Restaurant in town. The food is Excellent and the prices are reasonable. They are cozy, nicely decorated and have a cute little bakery/coffee house next to it. When we stay at the Pine Inn Hotel next door We even geat $40.00 in coupons towards our dinner. Excellent deal. Thank you, we love you in our area and Carmel. Great managers, excellent food, clean restaurant thanks...

If you want to dine at a great restaurant in Carmel that won't empty the bank account, try Il Fornio. Yes, I know, a chain restaurant. But they prepare some of the best and well portioned Southern Italian cuisine in the state. No kidding. I highly recommend the Bruchetta or the Minestrone soup as a starter and the Linguine Mare Chiaro for your entree. An extensive wine list but one which will break the bank if you order by the bottle. Bringing in your own wine and paying the corkage fee might be a better choice, TBH. Fresh bread, beautiful windowed seating area and an outdoor patio to dine al fresco, complete with a very informed and friendly staff. We will be back!

Dear Yelp, We frequently dine at Ill Fornaio on Ocean Avenue in down town Carmel-by-the Sea. We are always greeted with warm enthusiasm from Linda Butters, Assistant Manager. She makes us feel at home and makes sure we have our favorite seats. All the employees seem most happy and attentive when she is there. Many of the employees tell us what a great manager she is and how much they enjoy working for her. We recommend highly the Ill Fornaio for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Italian cuisine is exceptional, especially the Margareta Pizza. Betty and Scotty

Meh. After a nice long drive on the 17mile drive, you conveniently end up here after exiting the Carmel gate. I was really looking forward to this Carmel landmark, but it was a let down. Service was very spotty and invonsistent. When dining with kids I always observe how well they recognize their needs before the adults and this place didnt distinguish. Ordered all their october specials and regular items and specialties. Food was good, but no where near great. There are other interesting options near by so look around before choosing.

Glad we went back and gave it a 2nd chance. We weren't feeling too glam for the evening so just wanted something simple to share. Pizza came to mind so we split the Calamari and had one of their house pizzas. Calamari was well spiced this time and perfectly cooked and the pizza was just what the doctor ordered. So am very happy post the 2nd try but left wondering if the 1st visit was a fluke or they are inconsistent. Regardless of which, this hit the spot, was very tasty and per the last visit the service was impeccable.

Dined here last night, had been here several years ago and enjoyed it. Convenient to our hotel in beautiful downtown San Jose. The wait staff is very pleasant and attentive. The il Fornaio house wine, both white and red were exceptional. The pasta dishes we selected were cooked to perfection.

'Twas the night of Christmas and all through the restaurant not a person was seated not even the hostess (or she might have been seated. We didn't see her for 10 minutes after walking through the door). Our reservation was for 8 and we were told that there were 4 tables in front of and there was nothing that anyone could do about it. We went and sat at the bar and ordered drinks and a pizza. No earlier than 8:45, the hostess came to tell us our table was "about to be set up" but we said we would stay at the bar. Over booked, understaffed with grumpy employees who were loudly complaining about working. +1 star for good veggie pizza +1 star because it's Christmas.

The wait staff: Nate is awesome! All his recommendations were just perfect. I enjoyed Gamberoni Alla Busara, great seafood dish. My husband devoured his Pennoni alla Vodka. Nice selection of wines and sipped on Sangiovese with our meal. The marscapone torte was a perfect sweet finish to our meal. The patio upstairs was nice, but the ocean view was blocked by trees. The pretty flowers created romantic ambience. We will definitely come back to enjoy more yummy goodness. The only thing was, it was very noisy inside. So we enjoyed the outside patio deck.

Would have been 5 stars but for one small hiccup. We booked our reservation online and made a special request to be placed in a seat as private as possible (as "private" as Italian restaurants can be) since it was date night for my wife and I. When we arrived, the hostess did not acknowledge our request and was not very friendly. When we were seated, she placed us right next to the entrance and hostess station where there were no fewer than 10-12 patrons waiting to be seated. It was noisy and anything but romantic. Clearly they either did not read the request or chose to ignore it completely. It was not the first impression we were hoping for. Once seated, however, the evening took a turn for the better. Our wait staff was extremely friendly and the food was spectacular. We had a late reservation so it was not too long before the crowds died down and the atmosphere improved. We had a very nice meal and enjoyed ourselves overall. Next time, we will call ahead if we have any special requests.

Food took forever to be brought out to us. Food was cold. Our server disappeared and our drinks ran dry. They tried to recycle the bread and got mad when we asked for fresh bread. It was cold on the patio and we were told the heaters had no propane. Really I'm looking at 4 heaters and all are out of propane. Great location and patio but that's about it. Place would be nice if they made some changes.

The food was, at best, bland, when it finally got to us. It took 1 1/2 hrs to get our food. There is no excuse for this and it is not acceptable. After about the first twenty minutes our server informed us that they were out of an ingredient for an appetizer. This was at 3:30 PM. At that time he told us he had not yet put in our orders. There is no reason for this. The wait time might have been mitigated had the food been outstanding, or even very good. But all of ours (five of us) was bland. Never again. If possible I would give this place no stars, but I am giving it one because the busser was excellent about keeping us in bread and water.

No Bueno! Our party of 6 were sat next to a door, we spent most of our dining experience "swatting the flies"! My husband is hard of hearing and asked our server to repeat the list of tap beers, his reply "I already told you". We really should have picked up and left at this point. Our server was more interested in attempting to be Italian than serving us. We were served one basket of bread for our not-so-large party and had to ask twice for refill. One guest had his water glass repeatedly filled while us 3 further away were never offered one more drop. Four of us shared two glasses of water throughout the evening, even after one guest waved his water glass in an effort to get replenished. Very unhappy. Not only that, for $12.50 the Ceasar Salad should be close to an entreé portion, nope! It barely covered the center of an 8" dinner plate, we were not offered fresh ground pepper and the dressing was almost naught making it flavorless.

Oh we so want to love you! What a setting and those polished floors! Alas. From the soggy bruschetta with hardly a hint of basil or garlic, the barely interesting Caesar salad, to the truly disappointing pasta with chicken, we wanted to be delighted but felt let down. Our cheerful server was the bright spot but her grayed uniform told the true story- no longer loved, this restaurant desperately needs new energy and attention.

My wife and I were staying at the Pine Inn for 1 night after spending the day at the AT&T Pro-Am tournament and we decided to have dinner at Il Fornaio since it's located inside the hotel. Cocktails were delicious and our server was good... but nothing special. The food was the big disappointment. The insalata salad was wilted and the house vinaigrette was extremely bland. We also had the calamari which was extremely chewy and overcooked. The Cristina pizza was very greasy and overpowered by white truffle oil. Needless to say, we didn't even want to attempt dessert after our disappointing meal. There are certainly better choices of restaurants in Carmel other than Il Fornaio. Great atmosphere, great cocktails but, pass on the food.

We've been here many times over the years and have always had great food and very good service. It is typically very busy but efficient and organized despite the volume of food prepared and people being served. Tonight it is empty and the food wasn't worth eating. A Margarita pizza, the simplest and best of all pizzas- hard to ruin, but apparently it is possible. It looked and tasted like a frozen pizza. No discernable mozzarella or tomatoes. Several tiny shreds of blackened basil. Pathetic. Totally tasteless. Two stars are given only for the attentive service and the bread brought before the meal. There is better food virtually everywhere in downtown Carmel.

We attended the "Wine Maker's" dinner last night and it was wonderful. The food was amazing, especially the home made gnocchi. The evening featured a local winery (Joullian) and the food paring was perfect. Hats off to the manager Mark for hosting this great monthly event. The menu for this event is different from their regular menu which makes it a nice change. The chef always comes up with new and wonderful items to try. For if you would like an evening of great food and wine, try the "wine maker's dinner."

Food was alright, but service sucked big time. When we ordered wine, we forgot to specify 1/2 glass and waiter did not ask. He brought out full glasses. When I told him we wanted 1/2 glass he first said he could not take it back, but when I insisted he gave me the dirty look. Why did he assumed I wanted the full glass when there are options to choose 1/2 glass and full bottle? He complained as if it's all my fault. Been to this restaurant many times in the past. This was by far the worst experience.

Went there today around 2:30pm. Got seated right away on the patio which was great because we had a dog. Got served our water and after 15min no one had come to take our drink or food order. We asked the bus person to get us a waiter. Then the manager came out an helped a table that was seated after us. I told the manager looking guy that we had been waiting 15min and he snapped back I will be back after I enter their order. No apologies no Im sorry. We left. Not going back. We will see if they are more polite in Palo Alto.

So my husband wanted Italian food so we walked around the village and stumbled upon this place. We were seated immediately and loved the atmosphere and the whole ambiance of the restaurant. All of the waitstaff was very attentive and our waiter treated us like royalty when we found out we were on our honeymoon. We, recieved some complementary appetizere and dessert for celebration of our marriage. The manager came to ask about our service and gave us 2 vouchers we could use on our return to any of their locations. The service was fast and friendly and the food very tasty. We had a few appetizers and each had an entree and we shared a dessert and it all was very good. I was suprised to read some of the negative comments regarding the service and food since our experience was very positive. We would definitely go back to this place and recommend it to others.

Went here for lunch and I was quite unimpressed. Firstly Il Fornaio is a beautiful restaurant located right on the main street. The food was good, the bread was warm and crusty, and the chef was accomodating to all our picky requests. Thank you Chef! I had beautifully cooked mussels served with spaghetti ~ perfectly al dente with just the right amounts of garlic. I had ordered just a bowl of mussels only (I like to dip my bread in the garlicky sauce) but Chef put the mussels atop a bed of pasta. I couldnt resist so I ate the whole bowl, in fact, almost licked the bottom of it. The Minestrone soup was served steaming hot and loaded with tons of fresh vegetables, and the salads ~ very fresh and nicely dressed meaning not overly dressed. Herein lies the problem. It took 20 minutes to get a glass of water and we were all dying of thirst since it was a really warm day and all just a little dehydrated from the night before, and nearly half an hour to get a booster chair. While our server was friendly, its certainly impossible to provide any service whatsoever when they are only TWO servers for the entire restaurant as our server mentioned to us several times. Cant quite understand that why oh why on a beautiful Sunday afternoon there would be only two servers for such a popular restaurant.

Unacceptable from start to finish. We patiently kept waiting for things to improve ... I get service, I've done it, and I know enough to delineate between exceptional and ... this place. This restaurant is a chain that ran like one ... rock-bottom lowest on the totem pole. My guy was not greeted when he went in to inquire if they'd seat us outside with our dogs. He was met with several vacant stares from some hosts. One hostess cheerfully agreed to have us dine outside, and led us to an incredibly dirty, crusty table that she rubbed at with 2 bleach wipes. Table was left still dirty. The one star is for her kindness toward our dogs and offering water. We then just sat there ... for 30 MINUTES ... no greeting, no water for ourselves. I go in to inquire with the hostess if the server is aware he's had a table for awhile. She apologizes, gasps, "He still hasn't come?!" and promises he'll be right over. My checking in at least prompted 2 glasses of water and bread. (Still no server, just pp covering for him.) 45 minutes after initially being seated, a condescending, surly, unapologetic, and unable to even give us his name 'server' asks for our order. I politely inquired if he had been triple-sat, etc., giving him any excuse to help us understand the pronounced delay. Instead, he disingenuously alleged that he never knew about us w/ classic nonverbals (e.g., no eye contact; shifting gaze; smirking). At most, a "too bad for you" reaction. Arrogance x no humility in this context = classless, not classy. We decide to exit. Enough is enough. As soon as we reach the front another hostess magically bustles out to note the manager was purportedly alerted, and apologizes for service & management. Where was *management* to cover for their team / do their jobs / thank us for hanging tight just a bit longer? They weren't. Take your business elsewhere. We did, and it was easily one of the best dinner experiences we've had in a long time ... solid enough to take the sting off being so sadly disappointed by this 'restaurant.'

One starts due to having a great waiter. As for the food, if you order the pasta or gnocchi the sauces are bland or very liquid. I also ordered a plain salad and croutons were over cooked or to hard. Now we were also put in a high traffic area. The waiters kept bumping into my chair and they also had a door that opened to the outside so the wind kept blowing all of our stuff of the table. Beside being next to the bathroom where there was always a line and people always disrupting out time to relax. The manager did not help or try accommodate. I would not recommend this restaurant or ever come back.

Subpar service due to the over crowding of restaurant. Our dinner started well and ended deplorably. Our last dish took 35 minutes and arrived cold - yuk. Another major gripe is the over powering smell of bathroom deodorizer from bathrooms. And we were 20 ft away and still could not breath and interfered with food & wine taste.

Made a sudden reservation for 11 people. The staff was friendly and even made a few off the menu items for us at our request. The food was good. Because of our group size We were able to sample numerous dishes from the menu. Enjoyed all but the seafood pasta was especially yummy. I will be back with the wife (leaving the kids in LA)!

, The bread was superb, the carpaccio good. I had the tagliatelle Bolognese which had no flavor except beef grease & overcooked tomato; a real disappointment. My daughter had the veal which she reported as tender but tasteless. Forget the coffee; just undrinkable.

i like most ll Fornaio......they are the standard - always good - cannot go wrong restaurants to fall back on if you are not sure where to go for the evening. Carmel location is no different. still very good and you can always count on it for good pasta. i think i may like the SF location better - but i would def come here in a heartbeat when i'm in the carmel area. good wine list!

I have had Il Fornaio twice in my life, once here, once in Manhattan Beach, CA. This meal was phenomenal. Quaint, nice, pleasant, atmosphere. I loved the Calamaretti Fritti (shared appetizer), Caprese Salad and Linguine Mare Chiaro (assorted seafood pasta). For a small high-end restaurant chain (I believe there are about a dozen locations in nice areas of California), Il Fornaio is the tops!

My husband and I ate dinner at Il Fornaio and had a great experience, both with the food and the service. First, bread was brought to the table right away. It was warm and I loved the crunchiness of the crust to contrast with the softness of the bread. The person who brought the bread also poured some olive oil and balsamic vinegar in a dish for us to dip the bread in, which I liked. Then our server, Salvadore, came soon after we sat down, and took our drink orders, which also came out promptly. I had phoned ahead to see if I could have the Canneloni which is made with homemade pasta, but have it with no onions, since it normally has onions in the stuffing, and I am allergic to onions. The person answering the phone put me on with the chef, and he said he'd make an order of Canneloni specially for me ahead of time, with no onions, which I really appreciated. We also ordered a beet salad split between the two of us, and each portion was enough. The beet salad and the lemon olive oil dressing were delicious. When the entrees were brought to us, I realized that I should have asked in advance if it was high in fat, because I didn't realize that the Bechemel sauce the menu said it had on it was so rich, and I cannot tolerate rich foods.. I tried it, and realized that it might not agree with me, and I didn't want to eat any more of it, so as not to take a chance. When I told our server Salvadore, he asked me if there was something else I might like. I told him I'd like the Salmon, and he had it made with no rich sauce, and with a beautiful selection of mixed fresh vegetables including Broccolini. In so many words, I implied to Salvadore that I'd pay for the Canneloni since I had eaten it, but he didn't charge me for it, and even let me take what I didn't eat home, so my spouse could have it. I thought that was very nice of him, and he never made me feel at all guilty. The Salmon was very moist and delicious with no sauce needed, and the vegetables were done just right. In short, we loved the food, the service, and the ambience, and will come back to Il Fornaio when we find ourselves in Carmel again.

Fantastic happy hour! $6 appetizers, including their large, personal pizzas. The bartenders aren't very friendly, but the food and cocktails make up for it. If you're looking for a great place to have happy hour in Carmel, this is the place to go!

Ate dinner on a Saturday night with Reservations. Okay table. Service not great. Dirty dishes left on our table for a long time. The real problem was the food. It was terrible. I took 1 bite and pushed it away. It was old, rubbery fish. Tasted horrible. The vegetables were frozen limp veges. The potato had no flavor and was hard. I would not recommend this place. Some tourists asked us at the door how the food was. We told them to find somewhere else to eat; even jack in the box would be better.

I think Il Fornaio Carmel is an excellent restaurant. I have been going to Il Forniaos for 25 years in several cities in the US starting with San Francisco. I have never been disappointed in any way. The food is of consistently high quality. I simply cannot believe the disproportionate hostile reviews even by professional reviewers (because Il Forniao is a chain?). Il Fornaio is an Italian "Italian" restaurant as opposed to an Italo-American "Italian" restaurant. They do not kowtow to American predilections, e.g. they don't serve spaghetti and meatballs. My gnocchi "Ai Quattro Formaggi" were sublime. I have always found their pastas and gnocchi exquisite. Not to mention their breads. Once in Seattle, their "Pappardelle all'anatra" (duck sauce) was to die for (It was a special and not available the next day when I returned to the restaurant just to check.). If you have ever been to Italy, you will recognize the charm, elegance and flavors of the real Italy in these restaurants.

Our dinner at ll Fornaio was such a memorable experience. We had our first autumnal showers in Monterey which lent an added coziness to our wonderful dinner. There is a delicate balance at work here at Il Fornaio. The setting is so well-balanced, where modernity meets classic elegance and where cool and casual co-mingle with refinement and sophistication. The rooms are open and spacious yet cozy and intimate. The head waitstaff wear crisp and clean white server jackets that reflect the sophiscation, class, hipness and style at I'l Fornaio. Nice touch! A harmonious blend of styles reside together in one beautiful setting and everyone, no matter what your dining preference, is bound to have a wonderful time. With all this coupled with dynamic dishes, you'd expect to pay a pretty penny but the prices are actually very reasonable and easy on the wallet. The housemade bread and rolls come right from their bakery and are just absolute heaven. The bread is so fresh and flavorful it could actually be my main course :-) The Crab Cakes served with lobster sauce and a balsamic reduction were lipsmackingly good; some of the best I've tasted. The patties were full-flavored and packed with jumbo crab meat that really got my blood racing. My boyfriend went with the Margherita Pizza (tomatoes, basil, mozzarella and oregano on a thin crust housemade dough), and said it is was reminesent of many pizzerias in the pizza hub of New York and New Jersey. He claimed his pizza was by far the closest he's had to East Coast Pizza while residing in California. He's been hard pressed to find a West Coast counterpart. My Butternut Squash Raviolis with walnuts, parmesan cheese and sage was the total package -- warm, fresh, tasty, elegant and vibrant. I would definitely order it again with but with so many fine selections, it's not going to be an easy decision. If you're looking for a fresh, fun yet classy joint where quality food and service is paramount, then Il Fornaio is your place.

I have eaten here three times and it wasn't til the third, that I finally said "Enough is enough." First of all, the waitstaff is rude and pretentious. This has been a constant during each visit. The food is OK. Not great, but not bad either. In my final visit, I went alone. They sat me in a corner at a small table. As I looked around, I noticed that my tablecloth was stained, there were crumbs on my table and the silverware was dirty. The other tables were similarly outfitted. Of course, I may not have noticed this had it not taken my waiter 10+minutes to come over for a drink order. At this point, I was done and left the restaurant. I'm a local and am NEVER RETURNING.

I've eaten at other Il Fornaio restaurants in northern California and Nevada. This one was not very good. The wait staff was okay, though slow as well as the food. We were there before the crowd hit. I ordered the steak on the menu and everything as well as the sides with it were bland. Not a hint of salt or pepper. It tasted like nothing, which was disappointing. Everyone else at my table thought their food was bland as well, they had ordered pasta and pizza and a couple other dishes. Some of the pasta dishes were very watery- sauce-wise. Too much pasta water? Or too much liquid from the veggies that were added? Not sure, but no one likes a watery pasta. I wish this had been a better experience.

Pretty good spot in Carmel. Reasonably priced Italian and our table of eight all came away happy. Wine list was disappointing. Neither the Italians or the Californians were well represented. Nice ambiance, but we could tell it was more of a local crowd. Hence the glares at our table all night.

My family and I dined at Il Fornaio in November of 2013. Unfortunately, we did not have the best experience. The manager, Linda Butters, quickly responded and invited us back and we returned to dine on May 31, 2014. The experience was wonderful; the food was outstanding and the service suburb. Our waiter, Salvador Avendano, was attentive, knowledgeable and professional. When one of the wines we ordered was not available, he was quick to suggest another bottle that was wonderful. One of our dining companions is in the wine business and she was very impressed with Salvador's wine knowledge. The manager, I believe John, was friendly and made sure our needs were met with courtesy. It couldn't have been a better meal or experience. The evening surpassed my expectations; I highly recommend Il Fornaio. We have dined at Il Fornaio multiple times and the most recent visit reminds us of all our fabulous previous experiences. My family and I look forward to continuing to dine here in the future.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
