I was here for an All -You-Can-Eat Fish n' Chips dinner on a Friday and found the fish perfect and the chips really good, as well! Nothing bad about some ice-cold brew to go with that either! There was nothing at all wrong with the waitresses that I could see! I did not see any lack of cleanliness in the well-laid-out eating area, either. Rumors of arthropods and anthropoids are just attempts to be funny. There is a lingering sadness in the front room, though, because their Off Track Betting has not gone out of fashion, exactly, it's just that the average guys -- and this place was filled with average horse players -- just don't have the resources anymore to be throwing away money. I know I don't! Belmont, Aquaduct, Hollywood Park... Come in the daytime, the races are on, but there's hardly anybody home. Brand new, much brighter signs have been added outside, just in the last few months, so the place is really lit up at night now! Maybe they'll get more business.

This bar happened to be the halfway point for some friends and I to meet up so we stopped in for a quick beer after work. The place looks like it has definitely seen better days and I think with a little tweaking it could be a decent bar but for now it just has a weird setup. There's patio furniture inside and OTB is the first thing you see when you walk in. We only stayed for a minute so didn't try the food but the bartender was really friendly and helpful so I'd stop in again in a pinch, not necessarily my place to hang out though.

The Midtown Grill might have seen a brief heyday around the time Magic Carpet Golf was a hot Saturday night ticket and families gathered around at their new cathode-ray TV sets to watch Bewitched and Leave it to Beaver. The pool room/dining area near the entrance is still stifling with 50 years' worth of tepid biker smoke, and if a black light were used to reveal body fluids soaked into the thick carpet, I suspect the result might be blinding. We stopped in at the request of fellow pool players, and I'd been here a time or two before. In fact, I suspect that the barflys I last saw a few years ago were still planted there yelling "Cracker!" and waiting for a turn at the ancient karaoke machine. A large, aggressive prostitute was openly tricking and I worried for the health of her elderly client as they teetered, he on a walker, she on overburdened stripper platforms, toward the door. The large patio, available for private parties who apparently do not clean up after themselves, still boasts a dried-up fountain, a remnant of the Italian Restaurant that used to provide romantic ambience for diners but now hosts a few cigarette butts and stray lizards.

I was quite impressed with this place. Chili burger was tasty, well-sized, and a good price. Bartender was awesome and very accommodating. The place was great with a bunch of half-circle booths, smoking patio w/beer pong tables & heat lamps, a scratcher machine, etc. etc. Definitely coming back, even though I live 14 miles away.

There was a time when I would come here to catch the games on Sunday but I've wised up. I ended up choosing Midtown because it's really close to my house and I did by best to overlook Midtown's shortcomings out of, well laziness. What made me stop coming? I'll tell you. For starters the place looks like a rundown trailer. It's basically a long hallway with a bar area and some tables. Most of the TV are at one end of this hall and they're all stacked on top of each other. The TVs at the bar are too small to really see anything. The service is pretty bad. The servers roll in looking Hagared and hungover then proceed to vanish into the back for an hour. Food is hit and miss. I've ordered wings that were dangerously under cooked and was looked at like a nuisance when I asked for them to be sent back. The clientele is stretchy and unnerving. I had a guy sit next to my father and I during a game that came in piss drunk. He proceeded to stop his feet like a manchild and skreetch every expletive he could at the top of his lungs when his team did poorly. The staff did nothing to stop this idiot's repulsive, childish behavior and continued to serve him Jegarbombs. Mr. Manchild is only one example from a long list of shady oddballs i've encountered here. I was embarrassed to bring my dad to Midtown that day. So, I don't come here anymore and I often wonder why I ever did. One of the worst bars in Tucson.

So my friend sent me here to kill time while she completed some business across the street. I felt way beyond comfortable here on my own. My bartender, Colleen, went out of her way to be sure I felt at home. Other patrons did the same. There were hooks under the bar that I could hang my purse on (always a plus!). My usual bottled beer tasted better because Colleen offered to put it in a salted glass...yeah! Ordered some fried zucchini. Must say, kind of mediocre, but I still felt happy that I had accidentally found this place. There was a big outdoor place where you could drink and (gasp) smoke, a large indoor area where you could do some off-track betting, and a giant indoor place to just chill and/or eat burgers. I can think of no reason NOT to patronize this place!
