We went here recently on 09/08 for a late afternoon lunch and were greeted by a very enthusiastic man who seated us. The restaurant had a pretty Spanish atmosphere and a small store in the front selling some authentic decorations. After being seated, we were given some pretty standard chips and salsa. The salsa was tasty and had a nice spice to it, overall quite enjoy able. Service here was above-average as we never ran out of water or chips with refills coming before we could finish. We ordered the "Mr. Mike" Nachos with beans (extra $1) for a fair price of about $13. The amount of food we got was standard and the chips were still very crispy. We felt the nachos did nothing wrong, but also didn't do anything really right. Overall, not impressed but still good enough to be called a solid plate of nachos. The restaurant had Happy Hour signs posted around that showed some awesome deals. We will be returning in the future to try some of them. Overall, excellent service, pretty atmosphere, solid food. Sern and Hern approved.

If you like big portions of food and margaritas, if you like cheese, and if you don't mind tacky decor from decades ago, this place fits the bill. The food was decent. They give you a lot of it, and there's lots of ooey, gooey cheese. Our waitress and the older woman running the cash register were both somewhat unfriendly. We went on a Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant was nearly empty. I would go back.

I like going to the one on Grant cuz it's close and they have good lunch specials. But, the salsa is just awful. It is clearly Pace Picante Sauce, bought in bulk from Costco. Pace does not taste authentically Mexican. They use jalapeños instead of green chilies and it's too vinegary. If the cooks can't be bothered to make their own signature salsa, at least buy Herdez or Embasa or Costena Salsa Casera. Get a little buzz going by offering customers a taste test contest. The only other salsa they offer is plain canned tomatoes. Hilarious!

Really bad service. I ordered prickly pear shrimp taco, but only got a shrimp taco-- the waitress was just not listening. Ordered another margarita, but took 30 mins for them to bring it to me. Don't think it's a place I would like to go to for another time or recommend to others...

Pork tacos were pretty good. The meat was well seasoned. Rice and beans and tortillas were good but nothing special. Small place, looks kinda old but the wait service was good.

Make sure to ask for plastic tableware when taking out your food, if you leave without checking for it and call them they'll say "everyone else takes it out so you need to ask". I guess I should've asked for the food to be warm too. In all fairness the guy who is usually at the counter wasn't there and he is extremely cheerful and always puts tableware in our bag.

I came here thinking this place would be an alternative to El Molinitos. I was wrong. The service was average. The place looked a little run down. The food was average as best, but didn't look at all appetizing. I had the cheese enchiladas with beans and rice.

Ok....my best friend and I met here for a "until I see you again".... dinner. I had a CRAVING for a green Chile tamale, and some tortilla soup. . I ordered a small cheese crisp with green chilies and jalapenos as an appetizer. It was SO good. I took half of it home. The green chilies and jalapenos, and the cheese.....mixed with the home made tortilla......mmmmmmmm. My friend tacos mi casa (or something close to that....see pictures for actual name). lol.....was very good. The waitress brought the tortilla soup and it was heavenly. This is my favorite item here. I enjoyed every bite. Then the waitress came and told me the green Chile tamales were over cooked in the steamer, and they were dark, and no good. I was VERY disappointed. So I ordered a green Chile chicken burrito. I was ready to strike with my yelp whip. However when the burrito came out......... it was so good. Green chilies all through the chicken burrito. The chicken was so moist and good. Took most home to enjoy tomorrow. Now lets talk about the warm freshly made chips, and the two types of salsa they bring out with them. They are brought out in squirt type bottles. Tomato paste, lol..........and burn your ass.........both myself and my friend....burn your ass!! SO we went through TWO bottles of salsa with the chips ad the meal. It is one of the best salsa's I have had. I have been coming here since 1993. It has many memories, and still has good food. We asked the manager about the green Chile tamales....and she said some times they are steamed too long, and they just won't serve them because they care about food presentation. ..I was SET on a green Chile tamale, but I have more respect for the business for not putting out subpar food. . Great place, and much respect for not settling and just putting food out there. Great night....lots of laughs, and sharing great food and memories. Give this place a try, and have the tortilla soup!!!

This is the first of two Las Margaritas in Tucson. It is located on Grant Road east of Dodge Blvd on the south side of the street. It's just the building itself and there is a huge sign on the street telling you where it is. I would have to say this restaurant is worth 3.5 stars, but we all know Yelp only goes by the stars. The service seems to be better at the beginning and ending of the visit. Customers should never have to sit there for ten minutes wondering where the server has gone. That said, the overall service was good. Chips and salsa: "A-Ok". FYI, salsas are given by the bottle. Tacos & Taquitos: "Yay-Ok" Spinach enchilada: "Yay! I'm a fan." Beans and rice: "Yah! I'm a fan." Average of these three categories: 3.625 In comparison to other Mexican restaurants, the prices are pretty good. Their lunch prices is one of the best in Tucson in terms of hours. I noticed no portion difference between the lunch and dinner plates. This is the kicker that tells me to round up to four stars.

We love this place! They have great food, reasonable prices and it's never too crowded nor is there ever a long wait. This is a nice place for a good, quiet dinner :) P.s. I highly suggest the cheese crisp with green chilies...yum!

The only thing that we really disliked about Las Margaritas was the service, which was almost hostile in its neglect, but the food experience was only mediocre, so I'm going with 2 stars. I've probably passed this place a 1000 times. It's quite close to the house (although not as close as Casa Molina where we eat all the time) but there's something sort of sad and run-down looking about it. We came to meet friends. As I said, the service was practically nonexistent. We were not acknowledged by any sort of hostess when we walked in, and we wandered around until we found our friends in the bar. The decor is pretty much as you'd imagine: chile pepper shaped Christmas lights everywhere, small paintings of quaint Mexican scenes set into a stucco interior wall decorated to look like an exterior wall. You've been here before, even if you've never been here before. Our friends picked the bar because they said the main restaurant was too bright. Two types of salsa sat on the table...in ketchup bottles. One was completely without spice, and the other was almost completely without spice. The main flavor component of this salsa is sweetness (like straight up white sugar) which is not what I'm looking for in a salsa. Meh. Our friends were just finishing a bowl of chips, of which we got a few. Chips were not stand out either. Then, we waited. And waited. Eventually the waitress came to take our drink order and left with the empty bowl. Then we waited. And waited. Eventually a busboy bought more chips. Then we waited some more. I should note that our drink order was "two waters." When we finally received our drinks, we waited again to have our order taken, and then again for more chips. The chip bowls were tiny, and there were 4 of us, and we received only 3 total during the entire meal. So, even before the meal, we were sort of turned off by the indifferent service. The section did not seem especially crowded, and there were long stretches of time when we couldn't see any servers at all. On several occasions, the waitress came into the section and helped other customers but did not even glance in our direction, even though we were all trying to get her attention. The food was OK. I tried the flat enchilada, something I'd never had. I did like the thick corn meal base and the cheese and sauce were OK. I should have asked them to hold they onions, which were raw and overpowering. I also tried a carne seca taco. The meat was tender and flavorful. The taco was good--thin, crispy, fresh-- in some parts and soggy in others. The refritos were standard. The dish also contained a small sprinkling of lettuce. Husband enjoyed a large plate of carne seca, which came with a big tortilla. So, the food was not bad, but it was not rave-worthy, and the service was pretty much an afterthought. We were there for well over 2 hours, and while we enjoyed some lively conversation with friends, most of that time we were just waiting for the server to return. Needless to say, the check took forever to arrive.

No. How do you get mediocre Mexican food in Tucson? I had something on a tortilla with "steak" on it. Whoever cooked it must have been angry at the beef as it was beyond well done and at the point I would consider incinerated. My wife was however quite happy with her cheese enchilada and bean taco. Best I can say is that it was convenient to where we were staying. You can do MUCH better.

I used to come to this Las Margaritas often years ago. I was having my car serviced next door & decided to stop in for lunch. Mia opened the door seven minutes early than posted & invited me & another group in. The exterior could use some sprucing up from what I recalled in years past, but the bar area was very clean. Mia even ensured the area I sat at was dried off from her recent cleaning, something I rarely see at resaurants these days. The house margarita was ok & a tad pricey, but the flautas I ordered were large & delicious. The chips & salsa were as tasty as I'd remembered, as were the rice & beans. The food arrived in a timely manner. I showed my military ID with my credit card & was delighted they had given me a 10% discount. By the time I'd walked out the parking lot was full & everyone in the place seemed happy & well cared for. Mia was very prompt, friendly & appropriately timed with her check ins. Would recommend.

It's a hub of saccharine sweet mediocrity... The salsa had a nice kick, but too much sugar--It's certainly not fresh--and the accompanying chips were stale and bland. At least they were free, I guess. Both the Ginger Orange and straight up lime margarita tasted overly sweet and artificial. The lime garnishes were old, brown and dry. Neither of us finished our drinks. I wanted to like these cocktails--it's their name sake, I mean, come on--but they were fish bowls full of manufactured, over processed disappointment. So much sugar in one over-large glass. Laura and I split the Topopo salad and were even less impressed with the food: shredded Iceberg lettuce, shredded flavorless beef, a soggy flour tortilla shell--need I continue? On the plus side, the avocado was fresh and the beans were, while bland, cooked well. And then we left. Both of still feel bloated and tired--blood sugar spikes and processed food in our bellies--despite having finished nothing and walking a mile or so afterwords. Never a good sign. @Las Margaritas: Update your look and use fresh ingredients when you cook. No one wants to eat in a place with corporate carpeting climbing up the walls and brown limes hanging off the side of thier $13.00--overpriced--margaritas. The only joy I pulled out of this place came in the form of the friendly and attentive waitress. To her I say: Honey, you're better than that place; look for something nicer! -Fairy Food Father

This place is very "meh". I just don't see a reason for anyone to come here. The food was forgettable and tasteless. The service was just okay. The atmosphere and ambiance were drab. The margarita was weak. I mean, you are called Las MARGARITAS, at least make your drinks well. Even the sopapillas looked sad. How can you depress a piece of fried dough? I came here with family that wanted to come here. Personally, I would never choose this place. If you are going to pay for food, at least pay for good food.

Don't ever eat here . We just went here for dinner tonight and had to wait 45 minutes for our meal, once I brought this up to our server Jesus , he acted as if I was crazy . I had just spent the last 2 hours telling my wife how good this place was , and that I had been eating here for 39 years and vouch for it . My meal was completely wrong , my wife s fajitas were lukewarm, I have never not tipped in my life due to previously being a server and this was the first time , no manager was notified, even though my meal which I had one bite of was taken off the ticket with no apology. I will make it my mission to never let my relatives or progeny eat here .

Thumbs up. Authentic Mexican food. Lower fat veggie meals available. Personable staff. I am from the Southwest so I know.

My review is based on the food / drinks in the bar. I'm not a fan of sitting on stiff hard chairs when I go out for dinner and in the restaurant portion of this business that's what they have. But ... in the bar area the chairs and booths are well padded and comfortable. Some friends were in town from Oregon and I drove over to meet them. While exploring a place for dinner I always look at the cars in the parking lots and when we drove by Las Margaritas there were nice looking well maintained cars parked in the lot. It was toward the end of "happy hour" but we still got the deals. Great tasting Mexican cuisine on "hot" plates and tasty Margaritas .. not too sweet, not too sour .. just right. I look forward to eating here again in the future. Seating in the bar is nice and if they were to spruce up the decor and put comfortable seating in the restaurant portion of the business they'd drive more people through their door!

In my continuing quest to expand my culinary horizons, I decided to give Las Margaritas a shot with a to go order. After parting with my ten dollars I was greeted by a large ground beef chimi covered in melted cheese. The crust was a bit chewier than I would have liked, but the beef itself was decent. It's worth noting that I got all that and a bag of chips. Since it's so close to my work I'll likely sample more from the menu*, but I've had better on my recent Mexican food tour. *I've never since been tempted to go back.

Loved this place in the 80's and still love it now. BEST deal the Fiesta platter and a large cheese crisp. ONE PROBLEM though and its BIG-The young waitress with brown hair and a tattoo on her back was so incredibly rude and definitely in the "I hate my job mode" made our otherwise good food experience dreadful. We were a large party and first thing out of her mouth was "You know there is an 18% gratuity automatically added on" she also said "I don't want to have to shout when one of the older people asked her a question and stated they couldn't hear her. My advice find a more pleasant server or lose more business, there are many other mexican places to go. I will say our first waitress with a european accent was outstanding and later became the bartender,...wish she stayed our waitress

Just sorta BLAH. My family has eaten here about a thousand times (at the request of my grandmother's boyfriend) and I have been dragged along...first, I was looking forward to some good mexican food, since I live in Europe and can't really get any in my area....but what a disappointment. The food is mediocre at best. It is bland for Mexican, fairly tasteless, and frankly, not worth the calories. You would expect better from a TUCSON restaurant. Honestly, I have had a better Chimichanga when I lived in Wisconsin!! The hot salsa isn't even that hot. The Chimichanga I got last time was a bit soggy and lacked any real flavor. I am sure there are some much better places in Tucson to experience Mexican food! I would love to find them...

There was a large group of us - 30 to 40 - and they could accommodate us, which was nice, but overall ... meh ... there was a whole area of the restaurant without lights on - a little creepy. We ordered the sampler app and it was pretty terrible. If it was ever fresh, it was a couple days ago, or it was from a bag in the freezer. All the fried food filled me up, so I just ordered chicken tortilla soup for my meal. Thank goodness for that soup! It was super tasty - big chunks of chicken and avocado - yum. The giant margarita was fun, but I don't have plans to go back.

Horrible service. It took half an hr to get our bill after we were done eating. Then another 15 min for them to run the card. The bartender clearly saw us waiting but didnt even bother to acknowledge us. Worst service eber

American-washed Mexican food. BUT I respect any Hispanic restaurant that is smart enough to serve vegetarian options- especially at a buffet. The calabasitas were good. There is room for improvement.

Mediocre Mexican food. There are many places that serve better starting with Guadalajara Grill. The bar area is the only reason I've gone back. It's cozy and dark, nice to just sit and have beers. Plus their margaritas are actually pretty good. But if you're hungry - look elsewhere.

Let me preface this review with the fact that nothing with our experience was bad or wrong. We had a good meal and it was indeed "A-OK." 3.5 stars. Now, DISCLAIMER: I am a Mexican food snob. SNOBBBB. After living in southern New Mexico, I would venture to say that I'm a good judge of quality, authentic Mexican fare. Las Margaritas had an interesting take on that of my beloved southern NM food. After house-sitting for some friends, they took me out to dinner here on a Sunday evening. The decor is..well, eye-catching (to say the least). Maybe last decorated in the 70s/80s...that's all I can say. You've just gotta see yourself. I only saw maybe 2 other tables with people that night. The service was standard and my water glass was always full, so I appreciated that. Enchiladas Sonorenses-- green & chicken ($10.49): Layered cheese enchiladas with avocado and plenty of chicken on top, this dish came out very hot-- a big plus for me. The green sauce was good, avocado-y color in nature, but the salt content was a bit overbearing. I was still thirsty and chugging water all that night when I got home. Good flavor, and a fair portion. I wouldn't mind getting this again. My friends got a chimichanga per their usual and that's their favorite dish there. Basic review, but Las Margaritas gets the job done. I'll come back and try out their cool-looking bar sometime.

I like this place a lot for nostalgic reasons. But it's pretty decent if you don't have fond memories, too. It's not great. It's good. We have always sat in the bar instead of the dining room, because it's this awesome retro bar that feels like it is a time capsule from the 70s. Service is fine. They have a pretty good and cheap happy hour menu. Sunday buffet is decent. I don't know, I'm not sure I'd really send someone here when there are so many better Mexican places in town, but I like it and it's cool that they have been in business for, like, ever.

My family and I have been coming here for years; ever since I can remember. Family gatherings, birthdays, anniversaries, this is where we go. Service is average for a mexican food restaurant. The owner/manager knows us by name which always makes you feel at home. Big parties and large groups are great with the back room they have. Food is always good and the restaurant is very clean! The salsa is to die for! I will always come back here!

It was terrible disappointing. I feel so sorry for them. They have not gotten the hang of what really good Mexican food is and believe me we know what good food is here in Az. Dont waste your experience ot the SW at this place.

So sad. This had been one of my favorite restaurants ever since I was a kid. Classic Sonoran Mexican food much like you get in the south-side restaurants. I've visited regularly and turned many people on to it. However... A few weeks ago I ate here with a group of five people. Two of us got sick that night. We had both had the same meal. I called Las Margaritas the next day, not to complain (since I loved them so), but simply to warn them that perhaps something was tainted. The reaction I got from the woman who answered was unbelievably rude and unprofessional. There was never any sympathy or so much as an apology, just a condescending tone and a "Well... nobody else has complained. Maybe the (enchilada) sauce was just too strong for you." I'm not really even sure what that means! Oh well. My friends and I are never eating there again.

Do not cross the threshold of this restaurant unless you want to become ill. 4 of us walked in and when we smelled a bad smell should have walked out. We got terrible food. We complained about the smells and taste of food (bad guac/bad meat) and the most they were willing to do was refund couple of dollars for quac. Asked at checkout for manager who never came. The two of us that had started consuming the 'bad' food became violently ill immediately. DO NOT EAT HERE OR RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS.

We really liked this place! It doesn't look like much from outside but the food was very good. I had steak fajitas that were much better than most places. My companion had the red chili chimichanga and said it was very good too. Both items were huge! Be warned, the salsa was very hot by my standards but was very good as well. I'd definitely come back!

Went on a business lunch and my dining companions and I had a great time with great food and service. A few folks had the tortilla soup and enjoyed it immensely. My chicken taquitos combo was very good. Didn't hear a bit of complaining from anyone at lunch and I was dining with several people who eat there quite often.

I went here on a saturday night, during happy hour, with a couple friends for some margaritas and mexican food. We sat in the bar. The happy hour specials weren't that great. it was 3.50 for a little margarita or 6.50 for a big one. I would say that the food was average if this weren't Tucson, but I think mexican food should be held to a higher standard here. The service was below average, and the place overall just seemed kind of dead.

    (1)
  • Joshua S.

This is a nice place with consistently good food. There are better places to get mexican food but this place is fairly good with reasonable prices. The service is usually good and I have eaten there dozens of times and never been sick or had to visit the bathroom extensively. Nothing spectacular but always fairly good.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
