In some ways, La Indita is a nice representation of the traditional Mexican food that Tucson has to offer. It fits as a hole-in-the-wall joint and situated in the heart of 4th Avenue. In other ways, La Indita is different. It's not Sonoran, but rather tradition dishes with a Tohono-Tarascan mixture. It also promotes a healthier option for eating Mexican; no pork products, 100% canola oil. The food was cooked with care and tasted great. Service is very friendly. Like other great Mexican restaurants, it was a very welcoming interior. For the crowded and cooler times, there is a patio in the back. On this stretch of 4th Ave, La Indita is the place to go for eclectic Mexican food. Family run and operated!

Lovely Dinner We went on a Thursday evening and really enjoyed ourselves. The special of the day was 2 chicken enchiladas with green sauce. Sauce was not green chile but not just tomatillo either. Very unique blend that was all their own and quite tasty to my pallet. Solid prices on alcohol. Beer and wine only so no margaritas... There is quite a nice Mexican beer selection tho! We enjoyed the "Lighter Eaters" menu in which one could order say one enchilada and choice of beans or rice. Options like these were just the right size for some in our party. Service was excellent and the setting of the restaurant was cozy. I liked the large mural. Next time I will have to try the patio! Seriously good Mexican food and we will be back! Thanks La Indita!

Drawn in by the veggie options and the seemingly appetizing photos on Yelp. Unfortunately, I received a very underwhelming, bland and comparatively expensive Mexican meal. The only plus is the salsa, which appears to be house made, but isn't spicy at all. There was a young girl running wild through the restaurant, we weren't offered any water and the service was apathetic at best. They at first charged us a dollar to use a credit card with out asking permission first, but we chose to pay cash to avoid fee. It is against Mastercard/Visa policy to charge service fee's for credit cards, but why even bother with the fee in the first place? Unless they radically change their food quality, taste and service, I would not go here.

Had the Chalupa the first time and it was delicious! Had the enchiladas my secoond visit and they were yummy. Great food great service great family owned local restaurant. Tucson gem from Michoacán Mexico; nice to see a bit of my home land here in Arizona.

Excellent Customer Service, Delicious Latin-American fusion cuisine, small hole-in-the-wall type of shop but quality food and diverse options

I've loved every meal I had here. We often take visitors here to get a better sense of good-tasting, "real" Mexican food (specifically, Tarascan). My favorite dish is the chiles rellenos--so light. Their molé is also fantastic. Family-run local business worth trying at least once. I would have given five stars, but it's not the cleanest place. I think they especially could clean up the patio and restroom hallway area to make it a more appealing experience, because the patio has the potential to be a really cool hangout in this fun neighborhood.

The food and service here are very good. They're happy to accommodate making most dishes vegan. They have veggie fillings such as spinach & nut, mushroom and potato that are both filling and delicious. Many of the items are fried so don't go here looking for "health food" but at the same time, the food isn't so oily as to be undesirable. Prices are reasonable and plates come with delicious rice and beans. The rice here is my favorite of all the Mexican restaurants in town because it has carrots and peas in it. The Tarascan taco is my favorite. Lots of good vegan food here.

La Indita is one of my top three restaurant picks here in Tucson. Yummy food, lots of unique and not boring vegan options, super sweet waitstaff, and cute murals on the walls. One time, the owner even generously served us our lunch on the (cute) back patio while a torrential monsoon was happening, willingly wading through large puddles of water to get to us. I'd have to say my favorite thing to order here is the veggie delight because it includes a variety of their specialty items- the Tarascan tacos are to die for!!!

I've been coming to La Indita since 1986. Super cute place, nice people, family owned and run forever. We love the food. Today I had the #8 combo, and my daughter had the beef enchiladas. The sopapillas ended our meal and everything was wonderful.

Good food! The meal portions are big and cheap. They don't take Amex.

This place is a Tucson treasure. Every time we come down to Tucson to visit my aunt, we HAVE TO stop and eat here at La Indita. Service is great and food is phenomenal! I ALWAYS order the Mole plate and I practically lick the plate clean it's so good lol. Oh and La Indita Super Nachos are a fantastic starter and the portion is big; perfect for sharing. The fact that the restaurant is family owned and run, gives the place a very cozy feel. Fave fave fave Tucson restaurant.

Excellent food, friendly service. Salsa is bombtastic. This place is a golden little hole in the wall.

  • Sally R.

NO. Really lousy service. FIRE THE SO-CALLED WAITRESS! Expensive "Mexican" food strictly for tourists in a downtown tourist-trap. Another absentee owner at this business (rather common anymore on Fourth Avenue). CONS: No water refills; no chip refills; no salsa refills; not very hot dishes; unbelievably shitty service; noisy; infants allowed to crawl and romp screaming in a small room. Patio is full of junky tables and chairs and lacks shade. PROS: Homemade chips; excellent salsa. DON'T SPEND YOUR MONEY AND PATRONIZE THIS BUSINESS WHERE YOU'RE NOT TRULY WELCOMED.

This place was a find; while the food was great for the price and the servers all super nice they seemed to be in mid shift change and forgot about us for a while. It was really wort the wait, both dishes we ordered were worth a trip back next time I'm in Tucson

La Indita is a family owned restaurant, right in the heart of Tuscon. From the moment I walked in and during the entire stay, I was greeted and taken care of like family. I watched as the staff here catered to everyone that walked in with a smile. The food here is authentic Mexican, often cooked by grandma/Nana herself and it was excellent!!!!

  • Molly P.

The people working were super sweet and the atmosphere was charming. They are vegan friendly which was rad. The problem was the price. My girlfriend and I each ordered a burrito and the bill came to $21.00!!! Holy wow. The burritos were okay but for sure not worth $21.00! I had to look outside to make sure I wasn't back in San Francisco. I will definitely go somewhere else to get my burrito fix.

If I were dying Id ask for chicken enchilladas and green sauce as my final dish. Can I get a pacifico with that? This place rocks unless its gem show or street fair night. They have really cleaned the place up in recent years and Im liking it. Muy Bien!

Well after be lied to once again over the phone by Mi Nidito we came here.... The food was good, however remember you are on one of the "it spots" for Tucson so do not expect taco-stand prices. I'm about the food....which was a large portion size, fresh, fresh...and seemed to be home made. I eat vegetarian quite a bit so I appreciated the variety offered here. Wait staff attentive, helpful, extra tortillas were great (at no charge).... Place is kind of divey, run by a family...don't find that to often these days So many places to eat so little time......

  • Marie M.

A little nervous when I pulled up because the place looked a little dingy, but once inside the nervousness went away. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful. Our waitress quickly realized we wanted a vegan meal and a vegetarian meal and made sure to ask about cheese. We ordered spinach and nut enchiladas which were just ok. But the Indian tacos with calabacitas and the nopales were delicious! We would definitely return if we had the chance!

Good food and nice place to eat. The servers are very nice too.

  • Maggie M.

I had a reception for a large group on the patio here years ago after my husband and I got married and since then this place has always been special to me. I love to get the not-so-healthy but always delicious Indian Taco which is a taste of heaven in every bite but they also have more nutritionally balanced options including veggie enchiladas in the fall with pumpkin and other squash-type veggies.

  • Kevin C.

Indian taco: amazing red chile beef flavors. Portion was perfect for a hungry person. Fry bread was crispy enough to hold form but nice and soft for the munching 10/10 would order again. Red chile beef chimichanga: spice is nice. Could be hotter but the salsa on the side adds a nice kick. Nice big crispy chimichanga with some cabbage slaw on the side. Totally legit meal. Other: chips were nice and toasty. Salsa has nice kick. Great selection of Mexican beers. Staff is friendly and cool. Overall great experience. Eat here.

Food was so-so and service was terrible. There were only 3 tables with customers and the one server couldn't handle them all. He was clearly overwhelmed and took a very long time to take our order. We almost walked out, but he came over just before we were going to leave. Now I wish we had because the food was bland and boring. My sister and I split the green enchiladas and the fried tacos. I have no idea what the green sauce was- it did not look like anything I've ever seen or made before. It was very spicy, but otherwise tasted like nothing. The tacos were the same- some sort of bland red sauce on top. Just boring. Beans tasted like they were from a can, and the rice had no flavor. Several people had recommended this place to us before, but I was terribly disappointed. I would not return here.

A warm feeling. I had the green corn tamale and chicken vegetable soup. The prices are reasonable and the waiter was friendly.

I absolutely love La Indita. As a vegetarian, it is fantastic to be able to have diverse options, like calabacitas, nopales, eggplant enchiladas, and the chile rellenos are superb. It's super-unique and very delicious! I truly appreciate the effort of this little family restaurant. It's small and sometimes gets overwhelmed, but the food and warm atmosphere is definitely worth the little bit of patience. I take all of my visiting family and friends here - it is DEFINITELY my favorite Mexican restaurant in Tucson and perhaps Arizona!

  • Eric B.

Great place for veggies (and even vegans), but by no means should you shy away from here if you dig on meat. This place has some of the coolest and tastiest meat plates. For instance, the carne asada is served whole with grilled onions on top. Several of these meat plates are part of their daily special routine (which by the way is a great deal price wise). Other high points include their amazing chips and salsa, horchata, rice (seriously), and laid back, homey vibe.

  • Sylvia S.

I love La Indita. It's a favorite place to bring out of town visitors for a taste of Tucson. The menu is very veggie friendly and the dishes are unique and interesting. I just ordered take out from their nice online menu and I'm looking forward to my chile relleno.

  • Mark A.

I ate there with some friends from out of town, Why, Why, Why!!!!!!! I told them this was a bad idea, but they used to live here and loved it (that was a long time ago). This place is tired and the food is gross, the beans were burnt and I think left outside for days, the carne asada was a grisly mess, like it was left over from the 1970's version of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and they charge a lot extra for guacamole, if they had it. If you care about your stomach, your life and your health, go somewhere else!

    (1)
  • Drew L.

Had the Indian fry bread with Chile verde on top. Loved it. Fry bread was fresh, Chile was very flavorful. Portion should have been enough for leftovers but it was so tasty that I couldn't stop until it was gone. Gave them only 4 stars because the bass was cranked and the whole place shook as I ate. Will definitely be back. 2 thumbs up!

  • Karen R.

Excellent food! Vegan options abound by leaving off the cheese off just about every vegetarian option. This is my go-to place for a meal when family is in town.

    (4)
  • Vandana M.

I'll start with the good news: plenty of vegetarian options and decent salsa. Also, friendly service. The bad: we walked in and the restaurant smelled really, really bad. Kinda like a mildewy bathroom with a sewage leak. I'm not sure why. We almost walked out but we wanted to sit on the patio so we figured we could avoid the smell anyway. I hope there was something weird going on that day that made it smell like that, but even so, I wouldn't go back, even though the food tasted fine.

  • Bex H.

This is a family run establishment which is hard to come by these days. The portions are MASSIVE and the prices are AWESOME. Lots of vegan options and all effing DELICIOUS. I pigged out and tipped our lovely waitress huge. She kept bringing us endless freshly made tortilla chips and salsa. She also wasnt rude went we strolled in a couple minutes before closing and she chatted us up about her family and her love for Tucson.

  • Dana D.

La Indita is a super cute, very authentic Mexican restaurant right on 4th ave. I had the Chile relleno and a chicken taco. The relleno was awesome, but the taco wasn't worth ordering from the a la carte menu. They offer several good Mexican beers and their sangria was really good. I didnt stay for dessert but I wish I had. The prices were very reasonable, cheaper than Guadalajara or El Charro and the food is just as good. Be warned, if you're in a hurry don't stop at La Indita. The people are very friendly, but i think there might have only been two people working there, including cooking. This worked out fine for me because I was catching up with my mom. The only other downside is they don't accept credit card.

I found this family run Mexican restaurant on a trip into town with my son. We had enchiladas with the most delicate green sauce I have ever tasted, and a Beef Burrito. I was sold at the first bite. Delicate flavors exploded in my mouth, which I could only describe as authentic and fresh. The price so reasonable for the quality of food and attentive service, always with a smile. Needless to say, I told my Tucson family right away, because we just love to celebrate over food. It has become a must go to place for all my friends and family visiting Tucson. After exploring a few times, they now have me converted to a Traditional Molé fan, one of the very best I have experienced at La Indita. The servers are all like a family, if in fact they are blood related. For over 30 years and three going on four generation have been feeding Tucson. I have now not only become a fan of their food, but a friend of their family. Who could ask for a better dining experience when this happens... Viva La Indita. Fantastico

Excellent food, my wife and I had the chicken enchiladas in green sauce and the Chile rellanos. Both delicious.

  • Kayta A.

OK, it does smell kinda funky sometimes. But the food is so good, and not at all bland in my opinion. I love the spinach enchiladas, and the potato tacos are so delicious, I could eat them until I explode. The staff is helpful and knows how to answer questions about all the dishes, food comes quick, check comes quick, water and chip refills are plentiful, all in all a great place to get a casual meal on the cheap. Waitress both times has answered our "is this totally vegan?" questions, and if something wasn't, was able to recommend what was. Only complaint I have is that the 3 times I've gone in the past couple of months, the patio has never been available for seating, even when the "Patio Open!" sign is displayed. On beautiful days this is a big bummer, but hopefully as summer approaches this will be more available.

  • Wendy L.

One of my all time faces. Thick chips and salsa that always has the right kick! Try the more 'Indian' specialties...chalupas, Indian tacos and tarascan. Delish! Also very friendly for veggie types, with more than just the usual 'cheese enchilada' selection (spinach, potato, mushrooms...oh yeah!) Only loses a star because the service can be...well , local. Really really local.

    (4)
  • L L.

As other reviewers noted, a distinctly unpleasant odor assaults customers as they enter. La Indita's menu offers many vegetarian options. The salsa was superb: tasty and sharp. The chips were undercooked. The vegetarian combo, number 6, was huge; the flavors were bland. All in all, there is nothing bad to say, but nothing good, either.

  • Janet M.

I miss La Indita. I live in Oregon, home of not so wonderful Mexican food. La Indita could teach Oregonians a thing or two about potato tacos, mole sauce, and other yummy gooodness in terms of Mexican food. Sometimes I have dreams about this place... I think I ate there a whole lot back in the day. NO, it's not fancy, and yes, it could always use a good cleanup... I didn't care really. The food and the nice people kept me coming back. If you are in Tucson, eat a potato taco for me, ok?

    (4)
  • Sofia B.

My husband and I are both vegans. We end up being regulars at most every restaurant we go to because there are few that will accomodate us without making a face or getting it wrong repeatedly. La Indita always gets our order right and they are always happy to make your food to order and welcome substitutions. There are some dishes that are pretty greasy, but I kind of like that. The restaurant is a bit run down and the salsa is inconsistent, but its still good. Everyone is friendly and I love it! For the vegans: Try almost any veggie combination sin queso, of course. The bean and rice chimi is good with some calabacitas inside. Tarascan and potato tacos are really good! Mushroom and spinach enchiladas are great too. Yum.

We were in Tucson for a show and looking for a mom and pop restaurant open on Sunday's. Loved the potato tacos and chips and salsa!! My husband liked the enchiladas. Great vegetarian options too! Cant wait to go back :)

This place is amazing, the food is unreal. Everything on the menu is great. It's a must try place while in Tucson. Everyone that works there is friendly and helpful. The chips and salsa are so good.

  • Chris S.

I love so much that this place has soo many vegetarian options. Two vegetarians and 1 meat eater went into La Indita and came out satisfied. I had the cheese enchiladas which were good as were the rice and beans. I loved the homemade chips and salsa. The chips just being broken up corn tortillas like mama used to make. My sister ordered the corn tamales which was sweet and savory from what I could taste. My boyfriend ordered the beef taco which was very big for just a side item. The service we received was pretty good, it seems like they have a lot of regulars that come to this place. Which I always take as a good sign for a restaurant. It's basically you come in and choose a seat where ever you want, although the look of the place is a little divey.

  • Clarence B.

Guess who's back! La Indita! After swearing off this former love after she had cheated on me with bad service, stinky smells, and downward spiral food... I went back tonight and was loving her once again. 5 stars up in this mug. Got to sample lots of stuff tonight too as we shared combo specials... all good. Rated AG. Great service too and smelly whatever that was last few times (sewage? carpet?) Go back if you've been away and tell me if I'm right.

  • Corey D.

That was weird. Really. Weird. I haven't been to La Indita in a while, and I think it's going to be a while before I try them out again. 1. It took a while for a server to come over. 2. My two tacos were dripping with grease, so much so that if they weren't crispy I would have wrung them out to make them more enjoyable to eat. 3. Nobody came to check on me until the very end of my meal so it didn't matter if my tacos were juicy for all the wrong reasons. 4. I had to wait ten minutes to settle up because my server was helping hang a new "Open" sign in the window. Ironic, because I'm closing the door on you La Indita. Strangest interaction: ME: Can I have whole beans instead of re-fried? WAITRESS: We don't have whole beans, our beans are sort of mashed up. ME: Like re-fried? WAITRESS: No, not re-fried, but that style. We start with whole beans and the chef mashes them a bit so some stay whole, some are more mashed than others. ME: So can I just have beans that haven't been mashed? WAITRESS: Let me see what I can do. (times passes, food arrives) WAITRESS: Great news, the chef found whole beans!

The last time I was there was about two years ago. I had previously had good experiences and the food tastes good. HOWEVER you should keep reading... I order a margarita. Its a Mexican restaurant after all. Nope, only serve beer & wine. Strike One. I order guacamole. Out of avocados. Strike two. My sister and I are eating chips and salsa and as they are about to place our entrees on the table, a cockroach runs across the table and hops in the chip basket. The waitress says 'what do you want me to do about it?" in a not helpful, sarcastic tone. My sister has to run and get the manager who comes over and offers to comp our meal all while its still running around on the table. (I couldn't make this stuff up! Its too crazy!). Later we hear the waitress say under her breath 'I thought we got rid of that problem'. Dare I say Strike THREE? It made a lot more sense when I read the Sunday newspaper the next day and coincidentally they just had a health inspection and pest control issues was one of the reasons they failed. Again, great food but keep your eyes peeled for some crunchy little friends...

  • Jim C.

Absolutely ridiculous. My wife and I ordered and I watched another table order, eat and leave before our food came out. No explanation. No apology. Nothing. Never again. And that's a shame because when the food finally arrived it was good.

The food here is wonderful! La Indita is a favorite restaurant of our family's for over 20 years! I agree that the place could use some tidying and hope that the owners are paying attention to these reviews.

  • Laura M.

For the person that previously reviewed this place and had the delightful little cockroach story. I really wish I had read that before going here! We went yesterday for lunch (were the only ones in the place, which should have been the first clue!). Waitstaff was really friendly & horchata was yummy. Food was mediocre - I didn't really like the red sauce and raw cabbage that was heavily piled on top of everything. Half way through eating we apparantly roused the cockroach family that lives between the booth and the wall because they were crawling all over the walls and back of the booth (4 or 5 of them). After reading the other review this is a BIG problem with them and needs to be fixed big time!

This restaurant was recomended on tucsonvegan.com and we were blown away by the high quality food and comfortable atmosphere. We ordered the spinach and potato tacos, bean and rice burros, and mushroom enchiladas without cheese and left without room to spare! The chips and salsa were also very tasty, and servers/greeters were very friendly. This is a smaller place but has a very authentic Mexican family feel and is one not to miss if you are a vegan or vegetarian and around the 4th Avenue area in Tucson. Mexican vegan food is tough to find in restaurants and this place was fantastic! The beans and tortillas do not have lard, so you are pretty much safe with most options. Their menu is also very friendly to read, as they have indicated which options are vegan/vegetarian friendly. We will visit again when we return to Tucson!

Great Mexican food. I am cutting back on animal products and was very pleasantly surprised with the vegen offerings. Start with the chips and salsa. Home made chips as good as any and better than most. Good salsa. I had the chulpa special. Three chulpa with spinach on one, squash on the second and mushrooms on the third. Excellant. They used cabbage on top not iceburg lettice. It really added to the flavor and texture. The beans were very tasty. I never eat rice at mexican restaurants. I ate every single grain of theirs. It had little pieces of veges and potatoes in it. Only down side is the server is a little lax. She seems to have forgotten she works for tips. This is the best Mexican restaurant I have found in Tucson. I want to go back on a Sunday morning and try their breakfast menu.

I have two words... fresh tortillas. SO delicious! generally, it's a pretty average mexican joint for Tucson, I came to learn, (as I am not a native, and average for Tucson is definitely above average where I come from). But. The fresh tortillas pushed it above average for me. Portions are pretty large and run about $8-13. Oh, and it's about the only place in downtown Tucson without wifi.

We were out on another weekend adventure on 4th, and decided to give this place a try. We actually had a decent experience, despite the reviews that I'm reading after the fact. Yikes. We were just in the mood for a snack, so we decided to split something. We tried the Picadillas and we were very pleased. The carne asada was well-seasoned and perfectly cooked to our "medium-well"-tastes. The pico tasted fresh and piquant. The beans were mediocre, but they're only there for taco-dip anyway, in my opinion, and they were perfect for that. I even liked the rice. It was a simple, home-style pilaf with peas and carrots, cooked in chicken or vegetable broth. It was refreshing to me, since most Mexican restaurants just throw a ton of chilli powder and tomato paste into an over-cooked pilaf, and call it "Mexican rice". Nooo gracias. The most surprising part to me, though, was that the corn 'tortillas' that were used for the tacos, were really more 'sopa' then tortilla. They were thick, fluffy, deep-fried masa boats, as opposed to thin tortillas. I absolutely loved them! The service was truly poor, but I found the food to be delicious enough to forgive our clueless waiter and the semi-hostile hostess. I love "hole-in-the wall" spots, which I thought we had found, so I'm definitely sad that there seems to be a roach problem (this speculation is based only on previous reviewers' complaints, not our experience). We might be back since the food was so good, but this will remain a 3-star review until that pest problem is resolved.

Very good! We had some unique dishes, eggplant enchalidas were a special that night, we liked them so much we asked the host how the eggplant was prepared. He kindly obliged. I had Ranch Style open enchiladas, vegetarian served with a mild vinegar relish, very tasty. Others in our party had Carne Seca tacos & fresh chile rellenos, all we're very good. The place ain't fancy, in fact its downright dingy, but the food we had was very good,

With veg options, a nice waitstaff, AND back patio tables, I definitely frequent this avenue eatery. The fresh watermelon juice is so incredibly delicious and refreshing.

Good points 1. Lots of veggie/vegan options 2. Really good mole sauce! Yum yum yum.. 3. Good prices 4. Located on 4th avenue...fun to walk around after dinner...grab a drink, hang out, etc. Bad points: 1. Crummy service - seems like the staff is doing you a favor 2. Dingy surroundings - the 70s called, they want their brown interior back 3. Several websites said La Indita offered Michoacan food. I didn't see anything that seemed all that different from the typical Tucson mexican food scene. In the end, I would definitely rather go to Martin's..just down the street.

  • Carianne C.

Yes it is dingey, but that is ok with me! Last night had some of the best calabacitas I've ever had. Wonderfully tangy and spicy with green chilies and black pepper - cheesy goodness. I wanted to lick the plate. In the past I have always ordered the mole (which is very good, but not my favorite in Tucson). This is not a place to impress, but a place to go for a good home-cooked meal.

4th Ave... the downtown heart of the Old Pueblo. You'd think there'd be any number of Mexican restaurants on this thoroughfare. But really, this is your option. I was honestly hoping to be wow'ed here. And while the plane started rolling down the runway, it never really achieved lift off. The salsa is some of the more mediocre that I have experienced in Tucson. Really nothing special. Same with the chips. OK, but certainly not making the top 10 list for Tucson. Oh, and don't bother asking for salsa verde--they don't offer it. For main entrees, I went with one of the daily specials--a trio of chalupas: one spinach, one mushroom, one calabacitas. I started with the calabacitas. Now at this point, I was ready to excuse the plastic cups, the ho-hum chips... even the mediocre salsa. This thing had wonderful tangy flavors mixed in with ripe and juicy tomato accents. Really, this was a delicious morsel. Very, very tasty. Now happy with the food, I moved on to the spinach. With the first bite, I was back to feeling like this stuff was just ok, but nothing to write home to, or revisit. On to the mushroom... this one was actually bland. Certainly edible, but nothing exciting. No fiesta happening here. That said, I also tried some of their chicken mole. This was pretty good. Again, not hitting the top of the list for Tucson, but still good. One other member in our party had the tostadas and complimented the beef. I didn't try it but figured it was worth mentioning. As for the service... it was polite to be sure, with lots of thank you's and all. But there was no energy to the serving staff. They seemed tired... almost put out. I could understand this if it was a hopping night, but on this particular evening, we were literally the only ones there (this alone may tell you something). I had to go looking for the server to pay my bill. Not a big deal in itself, but combined with the lackluster meal, it left me simply wanting more. Don't get me wrong with the 2-star review... I've had some good food here. It would be worth trying if you are on 4th and really really craving some Mexican food. I was borderline thinking of giving it 3-stars (simply because of the plentiful vegetarian options), but as the descriptor for a 2-star rating says: "Meh. I've experienced better."

We stopped here for an early dinner, 4:00ish, on a Sunday afternoon. Obviously it was not convenient for them, and we were duly chastised by being told to sit in the "other" room. We chose a table next to the window since the lights were off and the room was quite dark (they were never turned on). Chips and salsa were brought promptly. The chips were good. The salsa was not so good. Tasted like Pace Picante cut with tomato sauce and a few spices. As we waited for someone to take our order I began to look around. Bad idea. The place was coated in dust, the pictures hung crookedly and the walls riddled with water damage. I decided it was a good thing the lights were off. I almost bolted for the door. With great hesitation we placed an order. We chose chicken enchiladas and green chili beef. I must say the food was honest, homemade Mexican food and quite good. The shredded chicken had been simmered with tomatoes and spices, the corn tortillas were great and the creamy green sauce wonderful. I think that most of the "green" came from a heavy dose of cilantro. It wasn't a flavor I expected, but it was really good. The beef was tender and spicy having been stewed with tomatoes, green chili and onions. The beans and rice were good as well. The tastiness of the food did make up for the brusque greeting and dusty environment. The food is the reason I'm being generous with a 3 star rating. I think I'll try take-out next time.

I've been here a few times, and it's always fantastic. It's a great place to go if you want some good, home made mexican food that differs from what you'd normally find. The mole is really rich, chocolately, and smokey. The roasted jalapeno's will knock your socks off - great for those who really want something spicy. My boyfriend loved the green corn tamale - and he normally isn't a big fan of tamles. The green chicken enchiladas were delicious, as were the enchiladas rancheras. The cost to quality ratio is also great, really good food for cheap prices. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I wish I could love La Indita. I really wish I could. I went there after reading all of the splendid reviews here on yelp. The place is quaint and cozy but I was overwhelmed with the dank smells of severe water damage. Then I looked up and saw the source. Creepy. The food was really good and I loved that they had tons of veggie options. Unfortunately, all of the fruit flies surrounding my plate left a bad taste in my mouth. I won't be going back unless they do some major rehauling of the space.

When in town (once every 5 years) we like to eat here. This time we had tarascan tacos and chicken mole. Dishes not commonly found at Mexican Restaurants. In fact, this is the first time for tarascan (spinach + ground pecans). Tasted great. Service was fine, since we were the only ones there. The surroundings were somewhat dingy, fitting in with the 4th Ave. motif.

Food was great! Atmosphere was ok. The waitress working wasn't to friendly an looked an acted as if all she wanted to do was go home. The gentleman working was very accommodating an friendly I went to use my groupon but would definatly go back for the food. Carna seca was awesome.

Traveling to California from Texas, I wanted my daughter to try Indian fry bread taco, this is why I picked this place. They serve it a little differently but it's just as great! They use small tender diced beef instead of ground beef. It's topped with mixture of chopped cabbage. It's really good!

This has been a favorite of mine for something like 17 years. I love that it has different Mexican food...I can't remember what they style is but it's not Sonoran. I love Sonoran Mexican food, but it's nice to have a change. Potato tacos - awesome. Really nice little family business.

After the day of the dead parade, my husband and I stopped in for a bite. We both thought a Mexican dinner would be the perfect cap to our celebration. Poor little La Indita had a rough day, the restaurant was still in a flurry from the day's business. The waitresses haggardly looked at us as we walked in as if asking us to let them have a break. We somehow missed the clue and asked where we could sit. We found a place in the middle of the front room and our waitress asked to be forgiving for her business and delay as she handed us our menus. The specials on the white board sounded delish... so appealing that the restaurant had completely run out of chicken. I was very excited to find so many vegetarian options. These were not just cheese quesadillas, but wonderful eggplant, mushroom and spinach dishes. I ordered the mushroom enchiladas and my husband ordered the beef something (I'm sorry, I didn't pay closer attention. I was more enthralled by the chips and salsa). The manager of the restaurant and owner proudly greeted his patrons. Our meals came soon enough. The red chile enchilada sauce was tasty and spicy. I wished that the dish was a little cheesier, but it hit the spot. Our guacamole was a little late coming to us, but worth the wait. The flavors were bold and clearly freshly made... my only disappointment was that there wasn't more. Half of the bowl was filled with an avocado pit. If you are in the area I would give this place a shot. I plan to return when they aren't so busy.

I would say La Indita is a oasis in a sea of non- vegetarian friendly Mexican restaurants in the SW. The dishes without meat are some of the highlights here. I would describe the food as being in the same vein as the Little Cafe Poca Cosa: fresh non-traditional mexican. I can eat here and not feel like i need a nap and a cleansing fast. Yes, the service can be decent to horrible, so go with low expectations and you'll be fine. The 'decor' is just West of dingy, except for the mural on the wall. Hmm, a lot of negatives, but we still go back fairly often, so that is a positive.....

Checked this place out last Sunday after not having eaten here in about 10 - 15 years - wonderful!!! The salsa was REALLY good, and the service was the best I've had in a while. I had the beef flautas, my friends had carne asada and the beef with red chile. We also ordered an indian taco to share. All were incredible! I especially liked the indian taco - very interesting (good interesting) mix of flavors. The fry bread had a hint of cinnamon to it, and was topped with carne asada and beans, as well as lettuce and cheese. My flautas were really crispy, and my friends really enjoyed their dishes. We'll be going back - perfect hangover meal!!!

Ambience: 2/5 (there are two dining rooms, both of which are a little run down and make me think of restaurant from the 1970s that hasn't been renovated yet) Food: 4/5 (good food, diverse menu, and arguably the best complimentary chips and salsa served in Tucson) Service: 2/5 (servers were inconsistent, but not terrible; owner berated us for asking for separate checks ["It's says on the menu that you can't!"] and also snuck the gratuity onto the check without making it clear, both of which soured the post-dinner mood) Value: 4/5 (reasonably priced, portions were a little small, but the superb, complimentary chips and salsa compensated for that) Verdict: despite flaws in service and ambience, I will probably come back again for the food and the chips, but La Indita won't be on my list of must-go places to take out-of-town visitors.

  • Mikey G.

Food was pretty good here. Particularly liked the complimentary salsa, better than most places. Service was shiesty! At first it wasn't even that bad. But about halfway through the meal our waitress disappeared. She'd occasionally re-appear, but never by our table. We needed two tortillas and some re-fills. My brother ultimately walked up to the counter and politely asked. About twenty minutes later the other waitress came by and helped us out. She took off one of the meals of the tab, which was sweet. I agree with other posters that one stop should be enough.

I've eaten here many times, and I'm a big fan of the food. However, the service is not great and the atmosphere in the restaurant is not great either. La Indita is housed in an old building on 4th Ave that probably hasn't been renovated in decades, and it sometimes feels a little stuffy inside. So, if atmosphere is a big deal to you, I wouldn't recommend La Indita. If food is all that matters to you, I would definitely recommend La Indita. They have excellent chips and salsa, the chicken mole is very good, and the tarascan tacos are super-tasty. =)

  • Tim S.

Although I suppose everyone should go to La Indita once, after that there is really no reason to return. I've been 4 times now and every time our order has been wrong. The service has never been anything to write home about either. Table waits during dinner can be very long and make sure you realize that there will be a gratuity added - they'll likely be noncommittal if you ask. The one thing it's got going for it is really wonderful complimentary chips and salsa. It's never been on my list of places to go, but friends always seem to think it's something special - maybe it's just not my thing.

One of my favorite Tucson memories. I love their salsa and their chile rellenos. Everything is really simple and I believe that is what makes it delicious. It may not be the quickest service ever, but that's just cultural...it's not fast food, it's good food and time spent dining is time spent with others talking and enjoying your moments...if you are in a hurry, try some place else.

Been here a few times since. The place is really picking up. Delicious mole, fresh salsa, homemade chips hit the spot. Service was great, especially when I attended a birthday party that filled up the entire back room. I love this place and it is usually where I go when I'm down on 4th.

In town for work. I decided to look up fresh mexican restaurants on Yelp. The tortilla chips were fresh and delicious salsa. I order a salad with shredded chicken and tomato. Wanted to keep it pretty plain and as healthy as possible. I'm having a hard time with the heat and sodium out west. It was ok. I was expecting a bit more flavor for a chicken that had been roasting. I found it more salty than flavorful. I wouldn't go back. Our first waitress seemed a bit neurotic. I felt like I had to beg for water refills and asked three times for lemons. Finally, another waitress stepped in and took our order and brought my refills and lemon. Honestly, I don't think I'm much of a Mexican food lover. I've had the best fresh Mexican food in Cozumel and Tampa. That's it.

Great little family owned spot, terrific chips and salsa. We tried some really interesting nightly specals. Mine was flautas with mole and hers were 3 very generously stuffed tacos (chicken, beef and pototao).

I had the special for the day, Chicken Mole. It was $7 and I really enjoyed it. Very flavorful and unusual. 2 different bums knocked on the window wanting me to bring food out? That was kinda strange. The salsa was good and the chips homemade and excellent. It wasnt busy when I was there but it was good.

I really like this place the first two times I ate here. The food was quite nice. However, things changed once I learned that many, many of my friends and acquaintances had been sick from their fare. A quick check of their health inspection records from the last year and a half reveal some disheartening facts. Out of the last 3 inspections, two were failing. This place smells like raw sewage inside, and the bathroom is deplorable.

The green chicken enchiladas were outstanding, as was the honey fry bread and flan. Yum Yum Yum.

    (5)
  • Jane D.

The food here is very good- unique flavors, delicious meats and mole sauce. Very good flan! The wait staff has always been friendly and accommodating. The downsides are: flat sodas and hygiene issues. The bathroom is pretty bad but I wonder about the kitchen as I walk by. I like the flavors, so I ignore that nagging feeling that the kitchen might be... gross?

From what I've seen so far, I would say La Indita is among the better Mexican restaurants in the area. I thought the food was pretty good, although it wasn't amazing. I would bet that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The staff were great, and there are many tables if you want to come with a group.

I rarely give a 5 star rating. This place got one because of the food and very inexpensive prices. The atmosphere isn't bad, but the food really shines. It's not fine dining, but for Mexican I don't expect this. The chips and salsa rock. The salsa is a little thin, but it's mighty tasty! I most recently had the chicken Mole as it was the daily special. VERY yummy! Everyone at my table was smacking their lips and commenting on how good everything was. Cheap, great Mexican food. What more can ya ask for? Plus it's in a convenient location on 4th ave close to coffee shops, shopping... Come in, dine, resistance is futile!!!

I know this place has its problems: slow service and an interior in need of spiffing up, but I am rooting for this place. It seems like La Indita has fallen on hard times. However, the food is always great--especially the ranch-style enchiladas--and the prices are very reasonable. I hope that if people continue to support this place, it'll get back up on its feet. I plan to be patient, keep enjoying the food, and stay loyal.

Hands down my favorite Mexican restuarant in Tucson, The carne seca tacos are fabulous, the meat so flavorful and juicy. It is much better than the carne seca at El Charro. However, they can run out of it by Sunday night so be prepared. This is fine, because they have plenty of other tasty options. The prices can't be beat either. On the negative side, the service can be extremely slow sometimes. The wait staff is always super friendly but if you happen to hit the place when they get mobbed, getting served can take a while.

've been eating here for 25 years. The food here tastes distinct, different from other sonoran restaurants. I It's not fancy, but it's good. The flour tortillas are amazing and thin. Lots of vegetarian options. Can be a bit cramped for space sometimes.

i love this place! 17 dollar meal for two (before tip but including iced teas) and i cannot get enough of their cheese crisps and mole...and enchiladas and....everything. seriously love the food and the atmosphere. it has a unique style and flavor that is hard to find in amongst the sea of mexican food of the southwest. also, extra star for attention to vegetarian items i.e., what is vegetarian and what can be made vegetarian. (EDIT: i got food poisoning at this place the week of thanksgiving, don't want to turn anyone away from it since it's locally owned and we all know that's rare, but i won't be heading back anytime soon...)

Good stuff. A little pricey but for tasty vegan Mexican fare I am down with it. I had the enchiladas; 1 spinach and nut and 1 mushroom. Tasty but small.Great guacamole and tasty beans. My wife loved the chicken flauntas. Very nice help but I cannot stand the old smell of the place.

I started eating at La Indita when they opened 25-ish years ago. I've since moved away but always eat here when i visit and have never been disappointed. Friendly family-owned place. I'm a big fan of the green chicken enchiladas, salsa and homemade chips. I don't think it's really valid to compare them to other Mexican places in town -it's a different style, Tarascan. Lots of vegetarian options too.

  • Surranna V.

I had a great experience here! The food was fresh, the salsa and sauces are made from scratch, which made the food savory and delicious. I had the indian taco and Chris had the carne seca, both were very good. The chips were nice and thick. The actual place is kind of divey and the service was ok, but the food is I would say some of the better Mexican food I have found in Tucson.

La Indita = Oh La La Did I ever mentioned how much I like Mexican food? During my mother's pregnancy with my sister and I she ate so much of it, even though we're African American, people think we're Hispanic. So its only appropriate I write a review about this place. La Indita is one of the many 4th Avenue restraunts which sits between a Vegan eatery and LGBT night club.... you know, a nifty place for those gay/lesbian vegans who are simply famished from dancing all night. I love La Indita's menu because it has an extensive list of possibilities... spinach and nut tacos, chille rellenos, enchiladas, tamales, etc. The food is not baked in Crisco, then moistened with a slab of butter like many Mexican restaurants around town. Its light (they only use vegetable oil) and seasoned well with some wonderful natural blends of spices. The boyfriend (aka Styrofoam and others have called him Cement) who enjoys only Taco Bell was delightfully satisfied with his plate of cheese Enchiladas, beans, and rice. Our guests with more refined tastes had a chicken mole dinner that wasn't too sweet nor too bland, but a perfect concoction. During our next visit we plan to try their Chalupas. Its a cute and quaint restaurant with really great food. Prices are anywhere between $5 and $8 a plate. Go on, visit and become a La Indita convert.

I've been going to La Indita for pretty much my entire life. It is always my number one pit-stop when I return to Tucson. The complimentary chips and salsa are always amazing, as is the horchata. The service is usually pretty decent, but when your dinner is under $8 I don't expect too much! I am always a huge fan of the tarascan tacos, chile rellenos, and green corn tamales! Delicious! Plus, everyone who works there is just so nice!

Not bad. Food is inexpensive, chips and salsa are good. I love thick, hard tortilla chips. Good location being situated near several coffee shops within short walking distance.

This place has never let me down. Potato tacos make my heart sing. Greasy potato tacos. Their salsa is yummy with just enough spice to give it a kick, but not kill your tastebuds. Every time I've gone here the place is relatively empty which is good if you're hungry and want to eat now damnit! The only bad thing I could say about this place is that sometimes I get a stomach ache after eating here because the tacos can be greasy, but this could be my sensitive little stomach and mean nothing to someone else.

    (5)
  • Grant S.

I tend to judge Mexican food on two criteria: the chips/salsa, and the rest. The chips here are thick and crunchy. Yum. The salsa is served with a spoon and while thin, has good flavor. Not bad. The entree I had, chicken enchiladas, were right on the money - good chicken breast, and a green chile sauce that had a little complexity to it. And while I usually just have a taste of the refried beans and rice, this time I ate them all - the rice had little bits of potato in it, and the beans were grubbin'. This is excellent, authentic Mexican food at a very reasonable price.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
