This place is awesome. Hands down, the BEST Red Menudo in Tucson! It is so tasty and broth has a texture that is just right! Best of all, it is not even spicy. It is the perfect menudo. And then there are the donuts. These donuts are better than Le Cave's! Cheaper too! This place is damn near perfect, except for the tamales. The tamales are not bad, they are just alright.

Don't forget Estrella has a new location in San Mercado on Congress. Parking in front. It takes 2 minutes to run in, grab a box of empanadas, and run back out. I never go to the old location any more since this is more convenient for me.

I heard about this place through yelp and decided to give it a try, particularly since I'm a sucker for pastries and donuts. The food here is cheap and delicious. I bought an assortment of baked goods and tortillas (still warm!) and the total came to under $10. Nothing was labeled, but the guy behind the counter was happy to answer any questions I had. Generally, I just pointed and he added them to the box. They also have beverages and other cool items, but the line was too long to really explore (though the line moved quickly). Also, there was a pile of $0.50 goods (crushed donuts, broken cookies, etc) that I wish I had grabbed. After all, you can never have too much sweet pastries in the house. Though I haven't tried everything I bought yet, what I have sampled was great. Fresh tasting donuts, thick tortillas with a nice charred flavor, and excellent pastries. Worth the drive out!

Ok on a quick note the empanadas are amazing. Picked up a few to take to family. Even after the long car ride and waiting til next morning, they were soft and still incredibly sweet. We did pineapple and cherry, sadly they were out of apple. Grabbed a pack of hotdog buns to prove way these are the best and used at half the Sonoran dog stands around Tucson. Estrella did not fail to prove my point, though now the family is a bit upset since they don't have daily access to this like I do. Need to try the donuts next time if I can get past the empanadas Staff was extremely helpful, like walking into grandma's kitchen.

Pumpkin empanadas. The medium tortillas de harina. And the La Noria corn tortillas (they don't make them, but they are yum). OMG. Weekly stop for these items and anything else that grabs our eye in the case. It's all good, it's all reasonably priced and they are all nice. . . a Tucson gem.

This Place Has To Make The Best Stuff!!! My Personal Favorites are the Long Johns! They have to be the BEST in Tucson, Srsly!!! I do not know what they do to them, but I can eat those things ALL DAY!!!

It's my neighborhood bakery and I wouldn't have it any other way! Not only do they open early, but pastries are available until afternoon most of the time. I love their pan dulce and they make a tasty chocolate donut too. Their selection is super traditional too. A large box of pastries won't cost you more than $10,not even close single pastries are $0.75! Their flour tortillas are made fresh daily. I'm really into the spinach tortillas these days. They make tamales too! It's truly a little piece of Mexico.

I've been buying La Estrella goodies at grocery stores whenever I can find them. But I FINALLY got down to their bakery and was in heaven! I love the smell as you walk in of buttery, sugary deliciousness. I am not a fan of all mexican pastries but I have my faves and they are the seashell looking buns called pan de huevo and the doughnuts coated in sugar. So I picked up several of each of these and of course couldn't leave without a bag of mexican torta bread - SO good! This spot is definitely a rougher older version of their nice new bakery in San Agustin but its authentic and a must try.

I was in the area, so I decided to drop in and try them out. A few days earlier in going to Alejandro's, I saw this bakery with a line coming out the door and customers coming out with bags and boxes of stuff. I purchased apple and pineapple empanadas, this Danish sort of pastry, chocolate Long Johns and Sonoran Dog buns. Overall, the products are just OK, nothing that really excites me. The empanadas were OK for empanadas. About on par with the ones I've had elsewhere. The Danish thing was relatively large with lots of the bread part of the pastry and very little of the custard/cream cheese dallop in the middle. Yes, it wasn't quite custard and wasn't cream cheese, but somewhat of a mix. Very little frosting on it. The overwhelming flavor is the bread which is not dense, but it isn't fluffy, either. The Long Johns were overly sweet. The chocolate frosting was a drier frosting. It wasn't dried out, it just was a drier frosting if that makes any sense. It wasn't moist. As a matter of fact, you could peel it off of the pastry. The pastry itself was heading toward the dense side. Definitely not light and fluffy. The bread part also had an unrecognizable flavor and after taste to it. The buns were light and fluffy. Sure smelled good. The flavor is OK, too. I definitely like the flavor of Alejandro's Sonoran Dog buns better. Alejandro's has a flavor that reminds me of almost eating King's Hawaiian Bread, a slightly sweet flavor. It is obvious that the bakery has been there many years. It relies only on a few windows and sunlight for lighting that I could remember, but it could use more lighting to increase the appeal and see the items in their display cases better.

The best donuts on the South Side! I have to enforce some very strong self-discipline when ever I have a hankering for something sweet because the first place that comes to mind is La Estrella. Traditional Mexican/Hispanic bakery in the heart of south side Tucson, but don't be scared to visit. They have amazing tortillas along with their donuts and assorted traditional Mexican pastries, cookies, cakes and pies. Get a dose of culture and your sugar intake for the week!

I'm not quite sure why in the 20 years I lived in Tucson I never frequented this place! I suppose it was out of my area and just too far to drive but on my recent visit it was the closest bakery and I had to do the tourist food stops while I was there. HOLY COW or VACA SAGRADA!! This place is completely amazing! It goes far beyond JUST a bakery! I went in early to get my empanda fix and was on overload...it's a feast for the senses for sure! Not only do they have their fresh empanadas y pan choices but they also have hot tamales, fresh tortillas made in-house as well as the veggies you'll need to throw together a beautiful salsa for their chips or whatever else you choose to purchase! Muy fantasico!! The senoras behind the counter were incredibly helpful and pleasant, and for those of you that may be intimidated by hole-in-the-wall places like this...they do speak English so don't hesitate to go in thinking there will be some type of language barrier. And for those of you intimated by the location or looks...GET OVER IT! These are the BEST places in Tucson to go to so GO! I'll be back La Estrella!! Muchas Gracias!

La Estrella is the best bakery in Tucson, bar none. I couldn't possibly list all the great things about this place. Everything baked there is supremely fresh. I'm sorry Kath S. had bad luck on that front -- but we go here on an almost weekly basis, and we've never had a problem like that. In fact, sometimes they actually go to the back to grab us the stuff that is so fresh it's still hot. You do need to remember that they don't use a lot of preservatives and everything made that day -- some stuff just doesn't last very long. So eat it when it's fresh and tasty! We've sampled a lot of the different baked goods at La Estrella, and have never been unimpressed. From the conchas and pan de huevo to the donuts and empanadas everything is outstanding. But, I need to tell you about perhaps their greatest offering -- the cochitos. Ho-lee-cow, those little piggie cookies are the bee's knees (or, maybe it's more fitting to say they're the pig's tail?). Seriously, those slightly sweet cookies with a hint of spice are to die for. I can't say I'd ever commit murder or a serious crime of that nature, but I might come close if there's a cochito on the line. We also love love love the tortillas, big and small. We've actually granted them their own food group at our house. If you're on the south side (and even if you're not) hit up La Estrella for a delicious treat.

Great tres leches cakes and tortillas. They also make gorgeous wedding cakes which I've seen and wanted to devour. They are always friendly and helpful. Their chocolate tres leches cake is a dangerous combination of awesome!

Oh Estrella Bakery How I Love Thee!! They have a never ending selection of Mexican bread and it's always sooo fresh (If you happen to come early enough, you have to try the glazed donuts). The staff is always so friendly and they also serve Menudo on weekends, just bring your pot and they'll fill it. This is definitely a Tucson diamond in the rough, but it is well worth trying!

This place is love at first bite. They sell a variety of baked goods that you can't go wrong with. We come here for the tortillas and the mexican sweet bread. I would say that they are a huge provider of the hot dog buns that so many use for sonoran dogs on the south side. They neighbor BK and El Guero Canelo. So if you are in the area, make sure to stop by La Estrella and pick up some goodies. There are a lot of things in there that I don't know the name for. The donuts are just amazing and always seem to be right out of the cooker. Warm, fluffy, glazed and delicious are the words I would use describe these delectable eats! There are various types of empanadas. The staff at La Estrella will do their best to make sure you get quite a variety for a low price. This place is a gem! Go there, Support their amazing sweets!

Bakery had a huge selection of items. Everything I purchased was fresh tasting and rich. The price was a real bargain! We especially liked their donuts and the lemon horn and elephant ear were to die for. We can't wait to hit this Tucson staple the next time we are in the area.

I had been directed there and didn't find it the first time, it is on the NW corner of 12th and Nebraska! The most friendly place I have been, bakery is beyond belief. I have tried a number of their goods and have never been disappointed!

Not a big fan. They had flies in the donut cabinets. I'm sure you're good in the winter but that place has swamp coolers and it was pretty hot in there.

This sweet little bakery is so fresh! Tucked away at San Mercado, there are very fresh pastries, breads and tortillas here and it is open every day of the week. Mornings look like the time to come, but even at 11 PM the tortillas were still warm! Picked up 4 pastries, and it was a total of $2.70 or so. Inexpensive. The tortillas are so delicious, and they have whole wheat ones. The mango empanada was crispy, fresh, flaky and amazingly good. The mango, wow! They had what looked a "snowball" which was a soft cookie like thing and that was just amazing. And I got this empanada-looking item that had a thin layer of brown sugar along it. Soooooo good. There is also mesquite honey in a jar, donuts, and makings for tamales. Lots of goodies here. They stay open an hour later during the Farmer's Market on Thursday. Nice atmosphere, come and sit down at a table in the open air courtyard and munch on some goodies.

I would eat calabaza empanadas and pan d' from here until I'm rolling on the floor. Perfection.

Wow! Donuts from are awesome... I don't get to eat a lot of donuts so it's a special occasion when I get one. The last couple of times I ate a donut it was kinda sad....BUT NOT TODAY!!! The donuts here are dense (for lack of a better term) or kinda cakes...not airey or lacking in substance...I still gotta try Le Caves to see which is better though....stay tuned.

After eating a great lunch at El Cuero Canello, we just HAD to stop at La Estrella's and take home a box of goodies. This was a first-time visit. I had an interesting experience with the lady who was serving me: She just started filling the box full of pastries and I asked her if I could choose the ones to go in the box. lol. She smiled and said, "Yes." But a lot of her choices still wound up going home with me. I think if I hadn't stopped her, I would have brought home the entire store. A dozen was pretty good for my first visit. I'm not sure of all that I got, but all that I've eaten so far has been fabulous and also beautifully presented and colorful. When I return, I'm going to load up on those empanadas. It sounds like I need to get there early before they sell out. 12 wonderful pastries and the total bill was less than $6.00. Amazing. They're a little off the beaten path but once you're on S. 12th Ave., you're in Mexican food heaven and why not make the most of it?

Everything at this bakery is very good and at a very good price. You can't go wrong. I love that they have fresh tortillas as well. I vote best bakery in tucson!

I was craving pineapple empanadas yesterday, so I drove all the way from Rita Ranch to the south side to get some. Lady: How many pineapple? Me: 6, those are my favorite Lady: How many pumpkin? Me: 4 pumpkin Lady: How many apple? Me: I don't like apple, but I'll take ONE for my daughter to try It went on like this until I figured I was buying too many pastries. So then I get home and I eat a pastry, but not an empanada, I'm saving those for breakfast the next day. Well today was the next day, and in the morning I made coffee, pour it in my togo container, grabbed and empanada, got in my car and off I go. So I bite the empanada, and it's APPLE. So I thought what are the odds that I picked the ONE apple empanada. ugh So I get home tonight thinking I'll have some hot tea along with a pineapple empanada, and guess what? They're ALL APPLE!! Every. Single. One. Of. Them. The rest of the pastries were tasty. The lady, although human, was friendly, and if it wasn't because she gave me a lot of what I didn't not want, they would get 5 stars. Note: I'm fluent in spanish and that's what the lady spoke to me , so the language barrier excuse doesn't apply.

We had family in town who used to live here. They used to come here several years ago and swear these are the best tortillas. When we saw the Frys on Houghton selling tortillas from here, we were stoked. I like them, but didn't think much of them really. Until our out-of-towners took us here! We made a stop to the actual bakery today and...OH MY GOSH!!! I now know that what I was missing was having them FRESH! The ones we picked up were still warm and delicious! We picked up several pastries and a donuts as well. I have to say that when eaten fresh, these are the best donuts I've ever had. I'm no donut specialist, but these were awesome. Even slightly stale from being left out and it was good. I can't wait to go back next time we need tortillas, they're so good. The only downfall I can tell is the parking situation. Otherwise, go here!!!

I just "scarfed down" the best pumpkin empanada ever from La Estrella Bakery. Light, flakey pastry crust with just the right amount of sweetness in the pumpkin filling. Mmmm. Next time, I'm going to have some of those freshly made tortillas.

A coworker brought in empanads from here a few weeks ago. They were still hot when we got them... Omg. They were amazing. I had a pumpkin and an apple one. We also had cherry and lemon. The huge box was gone quick. I went the next morning to get some.... So good. Very local place. But has a nice variety and the women working behind the counter were really nice and super fast.

Great Mexican bakery. Huge selection of baked goods, cookies and sweet breads. They do NOT have cake donuts. Fantastic and really cheap compared to La Cave.

I would give this bakery ZERO stars if I could! THEY SELL STALE BAKERY PRODUCTS!!! The day after Memorial Day, I drove almost an hour to this bakery because I had heard that they had amazing tortillas. I live on the far NE side and I was willing to drive there because I was shipping some fresh tortillas to the Warrior Hike Soldiers who are home from the war and hiking the Appalachian Trail. I was there close to noon and I was the only customer. I asked for fresh large tortillas and those were fine. I did tell the young woman who they were intended for. I also asked for 15 cinnamon rolls that I was going to mail them. I pointed to a fresh tray and she went to another tray, but I assumed that they had been made at the same time. She wasn't even going to put a lid on the boxes until I asked her to specifically. The tortillas and cinnamon rolls came to $50. I left a large tip in the jar and went home. When I started to wrap the cinnamon rolls to be mailed, they looked REALLY dried out and so we sampled one. They were so bad and dry that we threw the other 13 rolls out. They were terrible. I can't believe that they would sell stale products like this. I will NEVER return to this bakery. I am just sorry that I wasted my time and my money.

Thanks to the Yelp recommendations, I went here for the donuts, and boy am I happy that I did. While I like Krispy Kreme as much as the next guy, I prefer my donuts a tad bit more pillow-like, and that's exactly the kind of donut you get at La Estrella. Sweet, soft, spongy -- it's everything that a classic donut should be. Their empanadas are good, especially the pumpkin, and they have some really delicious conchas. Not everything they sell is a grand slam, but they're all hits in their own right, and the pricing is almost heinously low. I can't even describe my surprise when the big box of pastries that would have been over $10.00 anywhere else was only $5.90. I walked out of there like I stole something.

It seems tobe a well kept secret that :a Estrella bakery supplies not only El Guero Canelo their hot dog buns and yummy torta but bread and tortillas most of Tucsons best Mexican restaurants. I stopped in here onmy way to to LA to pick up a dozen of the yummy tortas and hot dog buns we had at El Gueros. It was SUPER cheap! 1 dozen freshly baked warm rolls for under $6! I also picked up some very warm flour tortillas (yummy) and an assortment of donuts and pastries. All freshly made warm from the oven. You cant do better than this place!

  • Dave J.

My friend talked up the donuts and it's known for the donuts, but I'm really a fresh-out-of-the-fryer Krispy Kreme kind of guy. The donuts were good, but not 5-stars good. I also had a pumpkin empanada and a churro, but both were just OK. I was a little dissapointed :-(

  • Roberta L.

It's all about the DONUTS!!! This place is known to locals and is not so convenient for a lot of us to get to, unfortunately. But, if you want to delight in the freshest, plumpest, most delicious donuts, GET HERE and get yourself a couple of dozen to go. The recipients will bless you. And, it's really worth the trip.
