If you don't know about this place, you're missing out! This is easily one of the best Mexican Food places in town. Everything they do is pretty fantastic, but my favorite is the Red Chili Chimichanga, with a side of rice and the best beans I've ever had. That's why I keep coming back! Try not to go crazy on the chips and salsa like I usually do, and its really hard to say no to a cheese crisp with green chiles for the table. I just made myself hungry and I wanna go eat there right now!

My family has been coming here for over 50 years! It's delicious, clean and the staff is wonderful. They have amazing cheese enchiladas! You can always count on Karichimaka to have a solid Mexican dish that is delicious. It's always spot on! I have great memories here and I am so happy I can now bring my own children here. Love this place!

Best chili relleno I ever had. In fact everything we had was a 5+. Great service. The owner, a gracious lady came out and asked us about the food and recommended other house special dishes for us to try on our next visit. We will be back often before we have to go home.

Nothing wrong with the building very nostalgic actually what you would want any Mexican restaurant to look like... an old style Mexican restaurant! Some of the best Mexican food in Tucson, and that says a lot! We love this place, the food and service are great... I'm not sure why there's so many negative reviews but at least try the place you will love it..

Amazing chicken fajitas I look forward to every time I am in town. Cheese crisps with green chiles are a must. The service is perfect and the atmosphere is authentic and welcoming. A family restaurant you don't want to miss in Tucson!

My family and I have been coming here for 25 years- by far the best Mexican restaurant in Tucson. They don't use lard- which we really appreciate and the family run service is always on point. Their never-ending chips and homemade salsa are out of this world and you MUST order a cheese crisp with chile strips. The Mexican potatoes (sliced onions and potatoes) with warm tortillas is one of my favorite dishes in Tucson. The enchilada sauce is always And the refried beans- heaven. superb and the tacos are always prepared perfectly. We will continue coming here for years to come and you can't miss this place! If this doesn't convince you, their herds of loyal customers should!

Best food in Tucson. Service outstanding. We go there and the server brings us our drinks before we order them. He remembers what we like and he never writes down the order he commits it to memory and he's spot on with the accuracy

I judge my Mexican food by the beans and they are yummy!! The rest of the family was very satisfied with red chili and enchiladas as well.

Good food loved the creamy beans. I had a Chili Rellenos along with a sour cream enchilada. No complaints at our table for four. Service a bit slow. Good homemade salsa. A bit stingy with the chips. All and all a good experience. We will come back.

This actually was my second time to visit Karichimaka and apparently it's a dining spot that's been around for a while. Our server was polite, friendly, and attentive. The decor reminded me of an old western restaurant. In fact, if you step outside and take a look at the large empty tiled floors and ramadas, you think this must have been a very popular place years ago with lots of dancing and outdoor dining. Maybe someone knows its history and can comment? My enchiladas with rojo sauce were OK and came with a side of salad. The salsa was good and the chips were OK. I thought the prices were a tad on the high side. Like several other reviewers, nothing extraordinary here to draw me back since there are so many other wonderful choices that are not so far away. I certainly wouldn't mind eating here again...it would just be low on my list.

Chile rellenos in the Tucson Area rated according to the Homeland Security Advisory System with three word descriptors. Karichimaka: they were puffy. Blue See photos.

Mexican food was ok, they are in desperate need of a make over. Maybe in the 1950's when it was in it's hay day...they used the patio? No Margarita's? looks like an old cafeteria. Prepare to be ignored by the employee's but not by the fly's. Charming Sante Fe style building and old tile work was the best part of it!

You know you're in a good place when you can smell salsa being made from the parking lot. My husband and his family have been going since the bald waiter had hair. Although we don't go in there often because it's across town from us, the waiter knows our order to the last detail. Whenever we have friends come in from out of town or are going to a show at the casino, this is the first place we think of to take them.

Red chili burro enchilada style was very good. The sauce has a flavor that is uncommon in Tucson Mexican food. I can't identify it but it's a bit smoky. You may or may not like it, but it's different. Salsa is smooth, blended dark red. Is rate it about 6/10 for heat. Service was good: pretty fast, attentive but never interrupting our conversation to ask how things were or other useless drivel. Not a home run but no complaints from me.

Tuesday night I flew in from NYC to Tucson. I am an ex Tucson resident who now lives in Brooklyn NYC. While I lived here, there were, and still a decent amount of restaurants, but I must have missed this one! I visited this restaurant and ate a chimichanga that brought tears to my eyes. It was as thick as my wrist and 10 " long. This is the S#*t! Tonight I go back for more and will finish this review. Tonight is Thursday March 25th, 2010 and I am eating. Food is excellent! and the beer is cold. The staff is very attentive but must admit clientele is a bit older than me. But that should not put anyone off, I mean this is Tucson! On walking around the grounds it is rather lovely, and I guess it would be nice if they used more of the "1952" Decor outside for eating. The refried beans are the best I have ever had, and the chicken chimi is superb! Honestly? This place is an undiscovered GEM! Jaded Tucsonans have their favorites, but for this New Yorker (who lived in Tucson for 5 years) it is truly something. And they got me a cab home!

I live so close but never had a desire to visit until one day when i was coerced; and although it wasn't the worst dining experience, it wasnt the best. I had the flat enchiladas which came with a side of the typical bland beans & rice. Enchis were good but as i said before sides were bland as well as the service.

We have been going to Karichimaka for thirty years, and we have never had a disappointing experience. I don't understand the negative reviews. Perhaps people have narrow expectations of how each plate should be done, and what they ordered wasn't a copy of what they've had some place else. The chiles rellenos, mentioned in another review, may not be picante, but they are always done to perfection with lots of cheese and nicely browned puffy egg batter. The food is always good-like how you wish your mother could prepare, and the service is expert, primarily by the same family that has run the restaurant for decades. We have wondered why it isn't packed, but it is on the edge of the res, so not in the middle of town. If you are looking for good food and a glimpse of old Tucson, this is the place to go.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
