I went there with my 2 daughters(aged 11 and 18) at 3:30 PM on a Friday in summer. There was only one other customer and one waitress. The waitress was very attentive The Drinks were served in large, wide rimmed plastic cups and my iced tea with real lemon wedges, the tea was very good.(although they did serve RC Cola to my daughter, no pepsi-no coke) My other daughter had lemonade which she said was good. I wanted something light and ordered the kids grilled cheese, substituting soup instead of fries. My youngest daughter had the barbecue beef sandwich, choosing cole slaw as side. My adult daughter ordered the Country Fried steak with mashed potatoes and country gravy, choosing potato salad as side. The grilled cheese was served on Texas toast by my request and contained 2 types of american style cheese, it was attractive and delicious. The cup of soup was very home made tasting chicken tortilla and required no additional seasoning, it was very good. The Country Fried steak was incredibly good and the mashed potatoes had chunky, homemade texture and tasted great. the gravy was delicious and combined the choice was spot on. The BBQ beef was very sweet and the bun overly hard, presenting the one negative of the visit. After the meal we were tempted by the Large Ice Cream shake, served in a tall glass with the metal mixer cup containing overflow, but opted instead for the chocolate moose pie with graham crust and an attractive chocolate drizzle. It was Fantastic. We ordered the pie for everyone after tasting the first and were not disappointed. there were large animal murals with a lot of personality and this former DMV building still has an open feel. The prices were good with bargains to be found and the food was a pleasant surprise. They honor Military discounts and veteran discounts. I don't recommend lightly, but one would do well to give the Happy Rooster a visit.

Great breakfasts here with thick toast and generously sized sausage and bacon. The best place to eat breakfast on the East side.

ZERO STARS Cold food. Food sits in the window while the balance of the order is still waiting to be cooked. Waitresses bring food to the table - it's not my order. And now they've gone and put notices on people's mailboxes more than a mile away that simply blow off and litter the neighborhood. DON'T EAT HERE. Bad food, bad service, and poor neighbor‼

I've been there a handful of times. And its a very good breakfast cafe. The facility is always clean, the staff is very friendly. The food is great. You get served big portions and it taste very homemade. The chicken fried steak is one of the best i ever had, and I try them everywhere. Their breakfast sausage is amazing. The pancakes are huge and delicious. The price is also reasonable. You leave feeling like you got your moneys worth.

No franchise, no chain, just a real good old Americana mom and pop standby. What we look for. Prices are less than the chains:( Very decent reuben with fresh pastrimi, nice rye bread, side for under $7; Tuna melt with the same, under $7.) The sandwiches were very good, better than you would find at a Denny's or Olive Garden, we believe. The home fries, done crispy were yummy and the cole slaw was fine. Large portions. The servers were about as good as they get. Cheerful, willing to please, always a smile. Decor is kitchy but not obnoxious, just a nice "old days Tucson" kind of place. Too bad they were out of the tater tots. People of our age remember them fondly from elementary school cafeterias! We love this place. The special of the day was eggs benedict, potato soup, and veggie for $6.49. How Americana can it get! Support America! Buy Mom and Pop!

The hubby was scheduled in to work late so we jumped at the opportunity to have a childless breakfast together. We both didn't want to cook so we decided to try the Rooster! My hubby had the chicken fried steak, with eggs hash browns, and toast($6.99). He loved his meal, I snuck a few bites and it was really really good. I had the eggs, hash browns, and toast with a short stack to split with the hubs. Everything was great. Our waitress was extremely attentive, and the good came out fast. We don't eat out for breakfast very often but this will not be the last time we visit.

Love this little cafe. Quaint atmosphere, friendly service. Food is good for what it is. I always get their blueberry pancake breakfasts, and they are the biggest pancakes I remember getting anywhere and delicious. I'm a regular here.

Good food, good people, decent service, raw egg. That was my experience this morning. I ordered my eggs over medium. I thought they seemed more over-easy but then the second one had a lot of raw egg white inside. I found this after my server had come to check on my food, so wasn't able to alert her to it. I did leave the egg for them to see and told the woman at the counter, who was embarrassed and apologetic. The raw egg costs Happy Rooster two stars on this review. I don't think it's acceptable to serve, and a breakfast line cook should know how to make an egg. The restaurant is otherwise a charming, down-home experience.

My first time eating ere and boy was I shocked by the portion sizes. The food was good quality and cooked well....my draw back was the fact that the wait staff didn't seem to care or even acknowledge you if you needed anything. I'm not picky I just like my Ice tea filled once while eating and do not believe I should have to wave my arm around in the air to get some attention. If service is not a criteria to you absolutely go here, the food is good.

Ah, the Rooster. We love this place on a Sunday morning. Be forewarned, food service is slow -- although table service is good -- it just takes a while to get your order. We anticipate this and bring along the Sunday paper. I get the veggie omelet and add jalapeños & cheese. My husband loves the ham and eggs. The rye and sourdough are baked fresh (elsewhere I think) and sold by the loaf in addition to alongside your meal -- the big thick slices make awesome toast. Side note: there's a private area off of the main dining room that can be reserved for large groups.

Lots of breakfast cafes to choose from in Tucson, but this one is unique! Not only quirky murals, but offers a vast array of breakfast items/plates, including healthy choices such as egg beater veggie omelet. There were 6 of us each ordering a different breakfast platter. From the omelets with fresh veggies, to the pancakes, fried potatoes, and sourdough toast, the food was plentiful, unlimited coffee, the food was cooked just right and with great flavor! Service was unbeatable and Great prices too! We will be back next time we're in Tucson!

It is always such a treat to go here. I love the French toast. My husband loves the bacon. The staff is always pleasant and it's a great atmosphere.

The Rooster for me will always be the DMV where I took my driver's test. Yep, I'm that old ;-) We love the Rooster. Hubs and I go 'off-peak' times and rarely have issues with waiting for a table, or the time it takes for the food to arrive. My usual, the "Farmer's Feast" is a heart attack waiting to happen, I get it with Grits instead of potatoes -- a much more generous bowl of grits than Denny's :-). Really Good Coffee and huge glasses of iced tea round off our breakfast well. Hubs always eats what I don't, and I usually end up taking the pancakes home to 'fry again in just a little bit of butter...' -- which, if you've never tried it, probably could be a concept for a new pancake house, "Twice - Fried Pancakes!" *yum* The owner is usually there, keeping a watchful eye, and our servers are extremely capable, efficient, fast & friendly - kind of truck-stop/diner style of service... (a good thing). The artist who decorated the building is fab (I think he's the same guy who has done Chuy's here in Tucson) - -and it is really cute with the farm/rooster/animals/barn theme. There's a little gift shop with chicken/rooster things, and it seems like it supports local business and organizations with fliers and posters; which I think is awesome. I have to disagree with the reviewer who said it compares to the Good Egg... I love the Good Egg (for different reasons), but The Happy Rooster is much more down-to-earth and traditional 'diner' style with its menu options... the healthy choice options are: oatmeal, or fruit, or a bagel.

1st visit. Place was pretty full, but we won't be back. Eggs over cooked, home fries over spiced, coffee so-so. Three wait staff including our waitress were intermittently eating their breakfast in the dining area while serving or bussing. Picked the wrong table because the bussing station directly overlooked our table. Weird to have two guys standing above you while they mixed eating with getting silverware ready for empty table. Just got the feel that management is too hands off or is in over their heads because too many things aren't working right here.

The Happy Rooster is a nice local eatery with a simple menu and excellent customer service. There's certainly nothing fancy about this place but that's not why people come here. They offer lunch/dinner selections but the visible groups of people waiting outside the Rooster are usually there on the weekends. Breakfast is the specialty here. They do a good job serving up the usual American breakfast classics including pancakes, Eggs Benedict and a variety of omelettes. They have a couple Mexican breakfast options as well. A cool touch is the starchy sides offered with most of their meals. You get your choice of hash browns, home fries, grits or tater tots! Even the bread options are plentiful with thick cut sourdough toast being my favorite. The servers do an amazing job here. I saw a busboy/host personally assisting an elderly woman by holding her hand all the way to the restroom and waiting until she was ready to return to her table. This is good old fashioned hospitality and a level of courtesy that you rarely see anywhere anymore. The food, however, is just ok. I wish I could give a higher rating to this place but the truth is it wasn't anything special. If the cooks stepped their game up The Rooster and it's patrons would be a lot happier.

The decor is super cute and the food is very good. The menu is no frills, but the food they serve is solid. The good points: The sourdough toast is delish! it's thick cut and from a local bakery. The ham is a thick slice as well. Every dish is more than enough for one person to eat. Coffee and tea are good. The servers are friendly. The not-so-good points: Don't plan on a quick meal. You'll get your food shortly after ordering, but service after that is sparse. This happened more than once. It took over 30 minutes to get the check both times. It was steady, but not crazy busy and there were 3-4 servers in the small cafe both times. Also, I ordered peach pie, and it looked like something that came from a box in the frozen food section. Not impressive. On the bright side, the waitress did show me the pie first because it was over cooked and asked if I was sure I wanted the pie, which I didn't. I give it 4 stars because I like the food better than our old stand by of the Bread and Butter Cafe, but the service isn't nearly as efficient.

Last time. The HR was a favorite for our monthly group of three until yesterday. It's obvious the folks that were in charge are no more or the cook is on hiatus. My Sonoran plate was over and undercooked and my friend's waffles were missing a key ingredient. Our waitress had to be called a few times for silverware. The fare is normally over the top. For our cynical crew, it doesn't take a lot to change our minds about an ole fave...js

reasonably priced, fast, clean and organized, and a very nice staff. I've lived here for 20 years -- within 5 miles of the place the whole time -- and never went. Now i will go back again and again. Get the biscuits and gravy.

I've lived in Tucson for almost 20 years and until recently had never been to the Happy Rooster Café. My parents were visiting me from Yuma a couple of weeks ago and my mom was hunting through the Entertainment Book and found a coupon for the Happy Rooster Café. She asked me if it was good... A bit sheepishly, I replied I had never even heard of it. So I did some research (thank you Yelp) and we decided to give it a try. Oh and I am so glad we did!! The food was so, so good and both of my parents remarked over and over again how it was the best breakfast they had ever had in a restaurant (on a side note, I've been to Yuma many times and it is a bit challenging to find a really good downhome breakfast)! We went at about 2:30 in the afternoon on a Friday and there was hardly anyone there, which gave us more of a chance to chat with the waitress, who was so friendly (I want to say her name was Stephanie but I'm not 100% sure). All three of us enjoyed the food, especially the potatoes. So tasty! Before we left, my mom just had to buy a "Happy Rooster Café" shirt. We then went back the morning my parents were leaving (it was a Sunday). It was packed, but the food was just as good as was the service despite how busy it was. Our waitress we had had a few days back was there again and remembered us, which made us all feel a wee bit special! My mom and I had the corned beef hash and it was very, very, VERY good, and those potatoes (I believe they are called "home fries") were once again perfection. They are done up so good and are perfectly seasoned!! I will definitely be back - can't wait to try some of their dinner items!

Friends of ours recommended this place for breakfast. It definitely didn't disappoint. If you are a big eater, or just super hungry, the Farmer's Feast will fill you up. For those of normal appetites, it's big enough to split between 2. The pancakes are about the size of a frisbee. We had the pecan ones, yummy. If you are a fan of sausage links, these were phenomenal. My sister ordered the chicken fried steak, wished she could have it for breakfast everyday. Staff very friendly, the ambience is super kitschy with roosters reigning supreme. Family and friends from overseas we brought loved the "americana feel" I wish I could dock 1/2 star for the coffee though, it's the worst breakfast diner coffee I have ever had. For the tea drinkers, they actually bring a carafe of hot water for you to refill your cup, a plus.

Food: The food here was OK, nothing to brag about or come back for. Although you got a lot of food for the dollar, the quality was not very good and we found it fairly greasy. Service: The service was standard. When we had asked where certain products on their menu was from, it took 3 people to figure it out. We also had to remind the waitress to refill our drinks. Atmosphere: Country style decor inside, but reminded me of a cafeteria. Not as clean as I would have liked it to be.

A fun Mom & Pop type place that's good for a decent, inexpensive breakfast. There are other meals on the menu, but I've only ever had breakfast here. There's nothing really imaginative on the menu but it's not bad.

What a fun little kitschy (cheesy) place! Decorated in "Graffiti style" roosters all over the walls, this is a fun little dive breakfast joint. Service was slow, but it was also Mother's Day and the staff advised they were busier than usual. I asked the waitress for a small bowl with a couple of cheerios, just to keep my toddler happy while we waited for our meals. She brought it quickly, and I was happy to see there wasn't a charge later (something we happily added on to tip instead). We both got the Farmer's Feast for under $8: eggs, potatoes, toast, bacon, sausage, and 2 pancakes. Is this not the deal of the century? Everything was perfectly prepared, and tasted great. Great price, good service. We'll be back.

Kitschy decor with goofy pictures of happy roosters and hens. They actually made me laugh. Our waitress was super friendly so I did my usual and asked what she thought I would like. She picked out steak and eggs for me. My wife got the Roosterville omelet with green chile, ham and cheese. They give you plenty of side choices like hash browns, home fries, grits or even tater tots. I love me some tots so that's what I got to go with my steak and eggs. This kind of convinced me that I am just not a steak and eggs person; at least not in that combination for breakfast. The griddled top sirloin was unseasoned and just kind of boring. The tots were did not seem to be salted either. The eggs were cooked well and the nice thick toast slices that came with it served well to sop up the liquid that pooled on my plate from the egg and side of salsa I ordered. At least the salsa seemed homemade. When I asked my wife how her omelet was she said, "Eh, it's an omelet". The slices of American cheese on top apparently did nothing to make it exciting. Happy Rooster is slightly out of our way but it's clean and locally owned. We will likely be back to try some other breakfast items.

New to Tucson. Went here because the diner is in the top 8 of the Best Breakfast in Tucson competition; thought we'd give it a try. Service: really slow; waitress lost a tables due to wait but still served regulars before those waiting longer. Food: came out late and really cold. It also tasted prepackaged so while not bad, it's not the best you'll ever have. Biscuits and gravy taste just like same dish at Cindy Lou's cafe. Both likely same prepackaged product from Sysco. Price: what it should be for what it is. Can't believe this place beat Mother Hubbard's in the contest.

    (2)
  • John H.

PROS: Decent price, as mentioned previously BIG breakfast for $8 and there's also a $2.99 meal that's just eggs, toast, and a side (homefries, hashbrowns, grits, tator tots, or tomato slices). Décor is really cute, my husband enjoyed all the different artwork on the wall, plenty of seating. Waitresses were very attentive and polite. CONS: Eggs were more over easy than over medium, as mentioned previously. Bacon was very crispy, and they put WAY too much seasoning on the homefries. Coffee taste old, burned. OVERALL, if I were in the area or had a great coupon ( Restaurants.com has $10 gift certificates for $2 sometimes) I would go back but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back again.

Food was wonderful and portions were very large, enough for two. Went with a large group and they did a great job getting our food out and taking care of us. Murals on the wall are a must see, some are very funny.

So i just ate here. I had the fruit platter with wheat toast and hot tea. My fruit was great perfectly ripe and couldnt finish it. My fiance had an egg, bacon, and toast. Unfortunately they burnt his bacon or otherwise his meal would have been great. The waitress wasnt great but not awful either. They were a little slow with our orders. Its not great but it isnt bad either. I would just say average.

This place is close to my work so I've eaten there 3 or 4 times. Always a great experience. The staff is great, very friendly. This is typical dinner food with diner prices. You can get breakfast anytime. I always leave full.

Wow..what a hole. Wife and I had good expectations but they were quickly shattered. Our first warning should have been that it was overrun with weeds. When we went in they sat us at a table and my wife lifted her arm and it was caked with old nasty hash browns and ketchup. Yes, they cleaned their tables that well. So they moved us to a new table and I ended up placing my arm in a pool of syrup. No idea about the food. The waitress was nice enough but we left without ordering. If the dining room is this filthy, how dirty is the kitchen? If management doesn't care about cleanliness, I have to question their food sanitation.

Down home cooking at it best. Love the prices and breakfast deals. Always a good local favorite that sticks to your ribs. Often it can be packed with tons of snow birds and gem show rock hounds. The wait staff is awesome and quick.

After multiple visits, a review is in order. I have found the service to be good and the ice tea refilled frequently. I have only ordered hamburgers so my comments are limited to this stape. The french fries are acceptable but without exception the burger itself is always overcooked and dry. Are they following the FDA recommendations for cremation? Next time I must try something else on the menu. How about a good old fashioned high calory chicken fried steak.

Awesome! While in town I love coming here at least once a week! It is quite small and feels very homely, it has fun pictures painted on the walls and makes you feel as if you're in a hokey little country diner! Our service is always fantastic, no matter the server- all very nice women who are always friendly and attentive. This place always gets our special orders down to a T, and often will not charge extra for the small things (Add some jalepenos to the omelette etc) The drinks are usually served in large glasses if you order juice or a soda, they will refill them but in most cases you never finish, but your server will be quick to offer you a to-go cup to take it with you (and even top it off). Everything about this place is perfect, quiet east side location, friendly service, AMAZING low prices, gigantic portions, and a nice relaxed atmosphere with an eclectic mix of people from all ages and walks of life. I have ONE complaint - The Coffee! Please fix this! Despite the coffee this is one of my all time favorite breakfast/lunch places in the U.S. and Yes, I've been to my fair share (300+) Be warned of weekend dining, there might be a bit of a wait, and since it is small, if you have a large group a reservation would be strongly recommended!

Recently went there after church, and we knew that they changed management, the food was still good, but he service and ambiance changed...no longer the little old ladies to serve us and now we have to make reservations or call in ahead of time.... food is still good...just not the same Rooster :(

Best breakfast place in Tucson. Not a greasy spoon, not expensive, great staff, and the food has never disappointed. The kids love the wall to wall murals/art. They also have the best biscuits and gravy.

I do love me some Happy Rooster! Positive- great value. You can order the Farmer's Feast for $8.00 and you get as follows: 2 eggs, 2 bacons, 2 sausage, choice of hash browns, choice of toast, and pancakes. Yep. That's a big ass meal! I always order it and then just take the pancakes home for later. Also, the bacon and sausage are &)$48:)-@ tasty! The bacon is thick and smoky and the sausage links are big and flavorful. Plus, you can ask for stuff in your pancakes like blueberries or pecans. The place is always packed on the weekend and you don't leave hungry. We usually call ahead to be seated, and we request our favorite southern belle Caroline's section. As long as you don't mind some good ol southern charm and being called baby, you'll love her too! If you end up with any of the other girls, the all hustle too. Negative- no windows. A lot of people tend to feel like its closed in or claustrophobic. It doesn't bother me but I've heard it more than once. It can get a little hot/humid inside and no one likes that, but there have also been times when its perfectly comfortable. Also, the building is old and the parking lot is weedy and crappy so it does have a dive appearance to it, but as long as the food remains tasty I'll keep coming!

  • Sarah L.

Happy Rooster? More like Prozac Chicken. This restaurant is claustrophobia-inducing, too warm inside and slightly grimy. (The outside of the mug they handed me looked greasy.) The eggs and bacon I ordered were well-cooked, so apparently they keep the person on the grill happy. But the pancakes were heavy and greasy. The bacon was the best part of them meal, a good, thick smoked bacon. The "maple" syrup was in reused maple syrup bottles of many varieties. It was not very flavorful. The wait staff was friendly and fairly attentive, but I was never offered more hot water for my tea. I guess if I'd been up for a greasy spoon and ordered only grill-cooked food it would have merited three stars. At least it was inexpensive.

Homey, kitschy breakfast spot. Food is abundant but not especially memorable. Friendly service. Horrible coffee.

Good breakfast spot. Gets crowded on weekends, the wait is never too long as the service and food are swift. No frills but you will get a solid meal for a reasonable price.

Always busy on the weekend - but worth the wait. Their breakfast is very good and pretty standard tucson breakfast fare (think The Good Egg as a comparison). All in all, a good meal.

  • Kalyn W.

Our family loves this place. It's great for a leisurely breakfast or lunch. I say leisurely because the food comes in it's own good time, but boy is it worth it. Just bring in something to read, or enjoy the company of a friend and enjoy. The sausage for breakfast are full, plump and of so yummy. The Tuna Melt for lunch is pure perfection for a tuna melt. It's ALWAYS packed on Sunday morning so get ready for a wait, and maybe bring a cooler because the portions are huge!! Oh, the coffee is fabulous and they have flavored creams.

    (4)
  • Jim T.

Pretty good breakfast place. Clean, friendly, not too noisy Portions VERY generous, service quite good. Avoid the Italian sausage, pretty flavorless. In house made Chorizo is quite tasty and quite SPICEY!
