Decided to give this lesser known little place a try. Holy cow, sooooo good! Fast, friendly service, delicious food ( I highly recommend their sweet corn tamales), and low prices make El Sur scrumptious bargain!

Gotta love this place! Although it's somewhat Americanized, I love this place. It's family run, the team is tight knit, and the food is delicioso! You can have a meal there for under $10 easy. I love their chicken tostadas. The chicken is pulled and seasoned to perfection served over a crispy tostada with shredded lettuce and cheese. yum! And their salsas are killer too. They offer mild and spicy in squeeze bottles. Did I mention the unlimited chips they serve? And the extra garnishes brought table side? Yep, this place is a gem. If you haven't experienced the awesomeness that is El Sur, do it soon please!

El Sur? Yes Sir! Brought some home from a called in order last night. I got the Chicken Enchilada combo plate (came with beans & rice). Traditional and straightforward succulent chicken rolled in soft corn tortillas with a mild green sauce blanketing the top. After dining in, I preferred bringing some home. Just as delicious but in a quieter atmosphere! (If you call my family quiet, ahem.)

Probably the best Mexican food restaurant I've had, and I'm born/ raised in Tucson! Friendly staff, great prices and tastes great! I love the taco salad bowl! Yum!

The only bad thing about going to this restaurant for the first time, is regretting not having been there before. It was like stepping in a time machine and going back to my grandma's kitchen. It really is the best restaurant I have been to in a long time. As soon as we walked in we were greeted. The server Delia, was so nice and efficient. Every employee there was moving, getting something, taking plates to and from tables, it was a pleasure to watch. When you have worked in the f&b industry for as long as I did, it's hard not to notice these things, and I can surely appreciate great service. Now onto the food, it was delicious! I had beef flautas, a sonoran hot dog, and a small bowl of cocido. Yes, I ate all of that myself. Now the cocido is one of my favorite comfort foods, but I had forgotten it's not something you eat late at night. My husband had shrimp tacos that were loaded with shrimp that was perfectly cooked, the rice and beans were so yummy. The kids had hot dogs and flautas and enjoyed them both. One of the great things about this restaurant is that they bring grilled onions and jalapeños to you with your meal, and that is a very nice touch. I am very happy to have found this restaurant and can't wait to go back!

I love this place, the food is good every time I go - the chili rellenos, the fajitas, the horchata, the green enchiladas, they're all awesome. Inexpensive, friendly, fast service! Cheap margaritas, too.

2.5. My first visit here was nice though. We were immediately greeted and allowed to choose our table. The salsa comes in ketchup bottles, yellow is mild, red is hot. They give you these nifty little cups to pour your portion in to. I couldn't get enough of it, the salsa was very tasty. The food here is just ok, nothing too special but, would come back if starving and in the area.

Good, cheap, friendly. Supposed to be a daily "happy hour" that lasts all day - $2 beer and tequila shots, $2.50 sangria and margaritas. Didn't try these. I brought home food for the three of us - I had the chicken mole special, which was OK, my fiancee had the carne asada, which was pretty good, and my roommate had the carnitas in a green salsa that was also pretty good. I also got a small birria soup, since I love birria. It was delicious. All of this food, plus chips and salsa, was $25, which is ridiculously affordable. We'll definitely be going again. The menu scans I've posted are good as of 5/27/2011.

El Sur provides good Mexican food that tastes home-made in a clean, well-lit environment. Although the food tastes bland, there is mild sauce and hot sauce on the table to add. The environment is lack-luster, but the low prices, and large portions make this a worthwhile place for a meal. Additionally, there are specials, such as chicken fajitas for $4.99, or strawberry daiquiris for $2.99.

No no no. It was so bad that after going there (based on the reviews posted here), my boyfriend said he was NEVER going to trust Yelp reviewers again. What, are all of you from like, Iowa or something? Never had really great Mexican food before? Have no tastebuds or a nose that works? Ugh. I've had some gross stuff before but this was almost unpalatable. The college students we were with opted for chicken flautas, which they liked, but the beans were pumpkin colored - weird flavor (cumin maybe), and not creamy or rich like good refrieds should be. The BF had chile rellenos - not my fave by any means, so I passed on a taste. I had the carne asada ranchero style and sent it back immediately (dummy me, forgot about the green peppers) and just had the carne asada. That should have been served skirt steak style or in strips, instead it was chopped up in little pieces that were so tough I couldn't chew them. Small pieces swallowed whole. Even the chips were absymal, not homemade and served in plastic bowls without the benefit of waxed paper in them, so the wet bowls (at least they were clean), made the chips soggy. 3 out of 4 of us ended up with stomach upset and nausea and heartburn before the night was over. And we ARE NOT that picky - the rundown decor and bad neighborhood didn't deter us from looking forward to eating there. The food certainly will prevent us from doing so again...

We came here while visiting my father-in-law for thanksgiving. I'm a Texan transplanted to new England, and would describe el sur as good, classic Tex Mex. Chile rellenos were excellent. Flautas were fried perfectly. Salsa was homemade. Would definitely go back, especially given the low prices. Service was friendly but somewhat slow.

Service was amazing! We couldn't even get through the door before staff was complimenting how cute our daughter was! Chips/salsa delivered as soon as we took our seats. Staff was super polite and accommodating! Chicken mole was awesome! Sangria yummy. Carne asada good. Great flan! Great fresh flour tortillas and beans! Coffee yucky and tasted old. Margaritas ok. Cheap prices! Guac fresh but you need to season it yourself. Waitress brought my daughter little free sandwich cookies when dinner had been cleared. Really great little place with no fancy frills but cheap and yummy. We will def be back!

This place serves a great, savory lunch fast and for a good price. It is always busy and the servers are sunny and attentive. Especially love the carnitas and salsa verde with roasted jalapeños on the side.

Love this place! Best "hole in the wall"! They have real, authentic Mexican food and very cheap prices. I love that they bring peppers and onions to the tables. Their chips and salsa are delicious. Actually, my husband and I like it so much that we buy salsa to take home every time we eat there. Employees are also very friendly. Overall, great Mexican food!

After moving away from Tucson nearly 20 years ago, I'm increasingly disappointed at the growing number of chain restaurants each time I return for a visit. Yelp to the rescue (again). Stationed on the east side for a few days, we looked up reviews for local restaurants and found El Sur. We each ordered a $5.99 menu item: I had the fish tacos and horchata while Stephen J. ordered enchiladas and a beer. The restaurant facility was nothing special, but it was cool and pleasant. Our server was prompt, friendly, and professional, and our food was plentiful and delicious. Our beverages? Well, let's just say El Sur is the place to go when thirsty. Our water glasses appeared to hold 32 ounces (I thought only 7-11 or Circle K did that anymore), as did my glass of horchata. I should probably be ashamed that I nearly drank all of my beloved rice beverage, but I'm choosing not to care. When paying the bill, I chatted with a gentleman who appeared to be manager or owner. I tried to convince him to visit Seattle, but I don't think I was successful. Sigh.

Stayed at a local hotel and was craving Mexican food. Well worth the 2 mile walk in summer heat to get here. The staff was amazing and efficient. It's simple and full of flavor. The clientele was as varied and diverse as the menu.

My wife brought me here because she says all the guys (and gals) at Davis Monthan go there. If you're not familiar with Tucson, this restaurant is just north of the base. We really loved it! They had fajitas on special for $4.95. I thought it was some sort of joke...but there's no joke here. The food was amazing! We also had a flan. My first flan (someone else's) did not impress me, and I was a little reticent to have another. But this flan was creamy and flavorful. I would definitely go again! And this place is CHEAP but GOOD eats!

El Sur is a white box restaurant with a strand of Christmas lights outside - East of the green walmart at craycroft. There is plenty of parking on the street adjacent to the restaurant. My friend and I were concerned about possible gastric issues, but it was all good. Huge water cups, spicy spicy salsa (2 baskets of chips free, no free refills - Pepsi products), the best sauteed onions, and great $4.99 chicken fajitas. I am a huge fan. You can smell the fajitas outside and they have a great flavor. Best place in town for fajitas. What are you waiting for?

After reading the reviews here, I really wanted to like this little Mexican restaurant. My wife and I visited a few weeks ago for lunch and we probably won't return. The service was fine, the prices certainly cheap enough, but we were less than impressed with the quality of the food. The tortillas were greasy to the point that they were almost translucent, the salsa was so salty it was almost inedible, and the beef on my plate was overcooked and dry. Since others have had such good experiences here, and some others not so good, I'll chalk all of this up to lack of consistency. If El Sur wants to shine as a Mexican restaurant in Tucson they should make sure that they find a way to produce consistently good eats.

Decent and more importantly, inexpensive Mexican food. The service was a little slow but I won't complain for the price. Also $2 bottled beers.

  • Sarah M.

Great cheap Mexican food. I had the shredded beef flautas combo, side of guacamole, and flan. The flautas were quite good, though the shredded beef wasn't shredded enough. The rice was alright but I didn't like the beans at all. Another reviewer didn't like the guacamole, but I thought it was fresh and a great addition to my flautas. I'd come back for it! TRY THE FLAN! It's homemade and delish. Service was friendly and helpful. I'd go here for lunch :)

The decor is very simplistic with some unsophisticated artwork on the walls. The prices were very cheap. They happened to have a special on the margaritas for $1.99 and they weren't weak at all. I can only comment on the food I ate. I ordered a side order of guacamole and I found it a bit bland. The tostada was very small but then again it was only $2., so I ordered two of them. They tasted o.k. The service was good enough. I would like to go back and try other dishes in order to see if I can raise my rating on this restaurant.

Great food and cheap prices! That's my start... what do you think? Want to hear more? You've already read some other reviews, I'm sure. What more can I add, really? We came here with friends for $5.99 shrimp fajitas... awesome deal, and the food tasted very good! Not standard fajita flavoring, but they are still seasoned well, and with the guacamole, yummy tortillas and extras that they bring you (grilled onions and roasted HOT peppers), you can make a nice meal of it!! I actually got the tilapia dish, and it was delicious! We had a great time here, and finished off with the best flan ever!! It was so creamy and yet firm.... almost like a creme brulee, but still flan. We only ordered one to share with four people, and had to order another one! It was THAT yummy.... Not sure what ISN'T good here! The service staff seemed very ready to make anything right, if you felt like you were missing something. I'll come back the next time I'm in Tucson! Yeah, howdy!

Some of the best Mexican food in Tucson. Everything is home made and you can tell. The chips, tortillas, salsa (which is served in ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles)... The enchiladas are fantastic and the bistek picado has such great flavor. I had the Cabeza burrito which was a good size and the carne was slightly fatty which just added more great flavor. The horchata here is pretty good too, on the mellow side. I enjoyed the guy that came around with roasted jalepenos and onions, hell yes I'll have some of those! The staff here kicks ass, they are always super efficient and friendly and the food is consistently great and it's cheap.

So for the few that get a five star rating I have to give this amazing lil place all 5!! I was looking for a place to go out and grab some lunch with my mom, and I was totally stumped. She mentioned Chuy's and after throwing up in my mouth a bit, I totally remembered that El Sur was down the street. So I pulled it up on Yelp and took a look at the ratings.... Say no more!! Heather M., Corey D. Boom! it was on. So I was like "Mom were going here." We pull up, and already from the parking lot I was salivating. Now being a Tucson native and and Eastside kid myself I cannot believe out of all the Mexican places I have ever eaten at I have never eaten here. So Im looking at the menu and the super chill waiter recommended the Fajita's. I didn't really care what I got as long as it smelled as good as the plate that just went right by to find its home in front of a guy at the next table over. Not knowing what kind of portions they served here, I also ordered three of the tacos. 2 x Carne Asada as recommended by Adan our server, and the red chili. He also mentioned a chelada special for 2 bux. I jumped on that because after it all it was my birthday, and I needed to get this party started right. So let me stop here and reflect on how awesomely good that chelada was, I got the Tecate beer though Im not a fan of that beer particularly, the chelada was one of the best tasting red beers I have EVER had. Im not sure what they did to it, I think it was treated with a large amount of fresh squeezed lime juice and some pepper, with a dash of good hot sauce, but like I said I'm not sure all I know is YOU MUST try one if you are a fan of cheladas. Anyhow once the food came out I was stunned the portions were akin to someone parking a lil volkswagen bug on the table in front of me! They were HUGE. I looked over at the equally large plate of Taco's, glanced at the waitress that was spooning roasted jalapeños and caramelized onions onto the plate, then glanced over at my mom who equally shared the expression of "Holy $h!t ....OK..... lets eat!!" Guys I'm not going to get into the details of the juicy, lip smacking noises and occasional grunts that emanated from our mouths for the next 20 mins that followed and just leave it at....5 stars!! P.S. The home made salsa and chips was perfectly spicy and addicting! The red chili tacos were just ridiculous good! Oh did I mention the Salsa?.. just checking.

Simple dining with wide selection of inexpensive and basic entries. Very friendly environment. We have been coming here for more than 6 years and this is one of our favorite restaurants in Tucson.

This is our best kept secret when eating in Tucson. The homestyle Mexican food is great! You must try the tamales de elote anytime you visit. We have always had great service and excellent food when dining here. The place is a bit cramped but it's well-priced and worth the trip! Edit: Is this place still open? We passed by twice and it seems it's closed every time.

I had dinner here a few nights ago, had the Chicken Enchiladas with Verde sauce. I was not expecting what I got which was good size enchilada with plenty of chicken with one of the best Verde sauces I ever had. This is definitely a must try place in Tucson, guarantied not to bankrupt you.

The best Mexican food not on the South side... Everything in life should be cheap, quick and tasty. Everything, if you know what I mean. *wink, wink* Okay, enough with the innuendo; El Sur sure does meet my exacting criteria of providing cheap, quick and tasty Mexican food. To sum up what kind of food I'm talking about, imagine this for a second: you're somewhere in Mexico, walk into some random home, and eat an honest-to-goodness meal made by a real, normal person. On my most recent lunch visit, I selected the chicken enchilada plate. It consisted of two said enchiladas served in a mild green chile sauce, beans and rice. The damage for this plate? Solamente seis dolares, mis amigos. The enchiladas were prepared nicely. It was simply shredded chicken cooked in corn tortillas and topped with a green chile sauce. Simple yes, but tasty as well. I did have a minor quibble in that I thought the sauce could have used a bit more kick. I'm not sure if they do this to cater to the gringo taste, which most of the patronage is typically composed of. The beans, oh those magical beans, certainly did not lack any kick or bite. They had a definite note of chile powder in both the taste department, as well as the visual. Let me elaborate on that last point: El Sur's beans at first glance don't have that regular brown color that you see in virtually every other Mexican joint. El Sur's beans have this redish hue that does actually give it a magical look. The rice is flavorful and moist, which sometimes Mexican rice is decidedly not. Being Asian, I simply cannot abide by dry rice or one cooked in a pan. I give El Sur's rice a big, yellow, chop-stick-calloused thumb up. On another previous visit a few weeks ago, I had the shrimp fajitas. The shrimp were of good size and the seasoning was quite good. I'm not going to lie and say that they were the best, plumpest or freshest shrimp I've had in my life, but it was devoured nonetheless and only set me back $6. The place itself is sort of like Zemam's. For those of you who are unfortunate enough to have never been there, the place is literally set in a house. Unlike Zemam's however, during the conversion process, El Sur knocked down walls to allow for a larger and open dining area. During the lunchtime hour, the place is buzzing. I generally take food back to work, but the few times I've dined there, I've never had a problem getting seated right away. And while the place may be nearly packed, the service has always been fairly fast and friendly. Even if you aren't on the East side, I would highly suggest a drive over to this place. If you anywhere within a 10 mile radius of the 22nd and Craycroft intersection, then you have no excuse to at least try El Sur just once. I cannot emphasize enough how the food served at El Sur is cheap, quick and tasty.

Hole in the wall with great home cooked meals. I had the shredded beef burro. Wife had chicken fajitas. 2 year old daughter looked at a small hand made taco and ate some sour cream, beans and rice. Good stuff. The mild salsa was mild enough for my 2 year old. The hot was enough to burn my lips, but not so hot that I needed to mix the two. Both were flavorful and fresh. Beans are outstanding. Décor: Clean painted cement block walls with cheesy paintings. Cheep tables, but they did not rock back and forth. I saw one fly. Not bad considering.

This is one of my husband's favorite restaurants in Tucson. The prices are very affordable. For two people: two entrees, tea and soda, and an appetizer was less than $20. We went last night for dinner and the place was packed. We arrived around 6:00 p.m. and by the time we left there was a line waiting to get in. The dining room has only about 20 tables and there were two large parties (over 8). I had the chile rhellanos and they were tasty, although they had a little too much enchilada sauce on them. My husband had the enchiladas which he enjoyed. We particularly like the grilled onions and jalapenos that they bring to the table. We also had guacamole appetizer. It was a bit bland, so we just added some salsa and salt to it and it was good.

El Sur is on my rotation for lunch. I work in the area and eat at El Sur at least once a week. The food is excellent--the chicken enchiladas with green sauce lunch special is my favorite. Its proximity to Davis Monthan AFB attracts many airmen. Please show them your appreciation for their service by picking up their check on occasion--I do.

Sorry other Yelpers, I thought this restaurant was horrible. The worst I've ever eaten. My beer was warm and my food was lukewarm. Almost always Mexican food is served so hot, they warn you when they serve your plate wearing an oven mitt. Not so with this restaurant. Food is served on plastic plates. I had a Chicken Enchilada, Shredded Beef Taco and a beef Tamale. The beans came with no cheese on top and where tomato-ee. The rice was standard. All the portions were small. The chicken enchilada was a joke and as I was cutting it I pulled out a chicken vein - gross, huh. It gets worse. The shredded beef taco was served in a standard pre folded taco shell you can buy in a box at your local market. How can you call that "authentic"? I bit into it and pulled out a huge chunk of fat! I couldn't believe how bad the quality of meat was. My warm beer tried to wash everything down. So disappointing. My significant other had beef fajitas and said they were very good. We both agreed the food at Ricardos in Sierra Vista, AZ is way better.

I used to work near here so it was a regular on the lunch rotation. I sure do miss it, but I had the chance to stop in again for lunch recently. Still great food and friendly service. I love the green corn tamales-they make them just how I like them, nice and moist with just a hint of sweetness. Of course the grilled jalapenos they bring to the table make me extra happy. A great local business that deserved your support!

I don't often give five stars to a "hole in the wall" type of restaurant, i.e., low-budget decor and store-front ambiance, but the food here was simply the best Mexican food I've had in a long, long time. The tamales were truly tasty, side dishes nicely seasoned and service prompt and friendly. My dining companions were happy with their shrimp taquitos and chicken mole. Lunch with tip $11, so a great value too. Admittedly, since I'm from Virginia, my standards for Mexican food may not be a s refined as for Tucson locals, but I doubt many people will be disappointed.

Holy Guacamole! I had no idea that places like this still existed. I remember going out to eat for under $20 back in the day, but these days you have to skimp to come in under $20 for 2 people. The prices here are unbelievable. We started with the guacamole to go with our chips and salsa. Real hand made guac. I did find that I wished for a little spice, maybe some cilantro and garlic, but it was fresh with perfectly ripe avocados. I sprinkled a little salt in it when no one was looking. The main course was chicken enchiladas with green sauce for me and a carne asada plate for my husband. Both tasty but again, a little more bland than I prefer. Pretty sure I got out the salt shaker again. We did have 2 stellar experiences here. One was the flan. It was AH-MAY-ZING! So creamy with a perfect consistency. It literally melts in your mouth. The other was the service. The entire wait staff was attentive and on top of it. We were greeted quickly, served quickly and our table was cleared quickly. While we were looking over the menu my husband asks "can you see what beers they have" so I turn to look towards the kitchen area. No tap so I'm looking for a cooler, but I can't see it. Before I can even get turned around to report on my observations there is a server at my side asking me if I need something. Totally taken back by a server that observes behavior and deduces there is a need I stammer something about beers and kinds and my husband, and I'm sure it made no sense. No worries though as he was not deterred. He immediately began listing all beers and then even went into margaritas and other drinks. Of course, I'm still reeling from shock so my brain isn't functioning yet. I just sit there staring at him in amazement. Husband to the rescue though - he orders a beer. So let's recount....chips and salsa, order of guacamole, 2 entrees complete with rice/beans, a beer (I never did really recover so I stuck with water) and a flan to share for twenty bucks and some change. Impressive. My only regret is that we decided to share the flan. Next time I order my own!

Passing through Tucson and stopped here based on reviews. Could not have been better. Great chile rellenos, cheap beer on tap, excellent side orders, impeccable/attentive/friendly service. Dinner for two with 4 beers for $23 bucks...cripes! I'll be back if I make it this way again.

Man is this place good! My parents and i loved it. My dad got the caldo de pollo which he said "it was VERY good". My mom got the posole and she said "it was different from regular posole because it had meat, homeny, beans, and a hint of mole but was excellent". I had a torta with carne asada, lettuce and tomatoes. It was really good but i just wish the bread could of been more firm because all the stuff kept falling out of it but other then that very good. Also for dessert we had sopapillas which were very good. The service was fantastic. Every servant was hustling and on top of everything. Would go there again when passing through Tucson.

Small, filled with people almost always, noisy, but worth every minute spent there! The food is excellent! Fajitas are often on special at ridiculously low prices like $4.99. We've eaten all three of them (beef, chicken and shrimp) at one time or another and never had a reason to complain. The special with green corn tamales and a ground beef taco is excellent. Honestly, I have never tasted such delicious green corn tamales ever - that after 32 years in Tucson! They have a slight sweetness to them that makes them unique and wonderful! The salsa is usually excellent too! I prefer the "hot" to the "mild". Last but not least, they give complimentary sauteed onions and jalapenos with every meal.

I have enjoyed going to El Sur since it opened. I recently went after a long absence. I realized that I had missed eating there very much! Reasonably priced with great portion sizes. Very homey atmosphere, and polite staff.

Great place for good Mexican Food, the actual restaurant is a little old, but who cares as long you get a great meal I am all for it. My co-worker and I stop by as a recommendation from one of our clients, he had the Cocido soup (Mexican vegetable soup), and i had the shredded beef tacos, my meal was awesome, and his soup was? Well let me put it this way, he was drinking the left over soup with his straw, yes it was that good! Prices are super competitive, parking is a little of a pain specially during lunch, EVERYONE IS HERE! but the food, and people are just awesome!! Give it a try, is just east of craycroft, on 22nd street, on the south side of 22nd st. is a yellow building, believe me you can not miss this place!

El Sur has a cafeteria like feel, though the food is home-cooked and pretty darn good. We started with the cheese crisp and though it got rave reviews in some of the newspapers, it was limp and tasteless. I was not so impressed. The guac and sour cream improved things a bit. I had green corn tamales and a beef taco for my main. Yum, yummy ground beef taco that makes you wonder what the hell it was your mom served you on "taco night". The green corn tamale was one of the best I've ever had, slightly mushy and sweet in the middle. We faced some up-charges here and there: sour cream, guacamole, extra cheese, drink refills. I didn't feel ripped off because you are only paying 4.99-6.99 for an entree. Apparently, the liquor license has been suspended. Our waitress said they were working that out. We shall see. Get the flan for desert and end things on a high note. 3 bucks and oh, so delicious.

The food is cheap because the make up the rest of the money in other ways. Drinks are almost $2 and does not includes refill. A refill on a basket of chips is $1 and a side of guacamole is $2. I ordered the Carne Asada. It's on the menu twice for two different prices so I asked the waitress for clarification. She said "it's cube steak for $5.99". It came with tortillas, beans, rice, and cabbage/tomatoes. When they brought out the food, they offered a jalepeno and grilled onions. The beans tasted funny and my tortilla was paper thin and rubbery. Overall everything was okay (kinda bland) but nothing spectacular. This place has pretty good service and employees who look like they enjoy their jobs (that's always a plus).

I ate here because I read all the great reviews about El Sur. The service was mediocre at best. I asked for birria soup and got albondigas. It took a long time to get the birria. I asked for limes and that took a long time to get. The birria was good, but I got pico de gallo to put in it instead of the traditional cabbage and onion. My wife's chile relleno was also good. The sauce had very good flavor. My daughter's shrimp tacos were not good at all. Way too many spices. The same goes for the carne asada tacos. I never was offered the grilled onions and jalapeño that everyone talked about. All this said I would go back to give it another shot. The birria was worth it, specially if I wake up hungover.

Love the chicken chimichanga with green Chile and the price is really good too.

El Sur is not much to look at but the food is great at very reasonable prices. I love their Horchata and Flan. Their burritos are huge and I can easily make two meals out of them.

Ate here last night with the help of Yelp. Great find. We could not believe the prices. Our bill was under $20 for dinner and drinks. I had fajita's and my husband had tilapia. My margarita actually had booze in it. The service was great. They even deliver sauteed onions and jalapenos to your table. Wish we had a place like this where I'm from.

I'd probably put this at 3 stars, honestly, but I'm not gonna take down the rating for a good, honest, little local restaurant. The service was great and the food was good. I don't think it's the best Mexican in Tucson, nor is it the most authentic. I'm only saying this because as a tourist, I used Yelp to find this place-- and I think the reviews are a bit skewed. The chile rellenos looked a bit like eggplant parmesan. Though I was told they were crispy and good enough. The guacamole desperately needed lime and salt, but was otherwise fresh. The chips are delicious and the salsas flavorful. I had the pozole-- and honestly, it was underwhelming. Absolutely no heat-- and it came with no condiments (like the standard lime, chili, radish, etc). All in all-- the food is homey and good. I would eat there again, but I also felt compelled to try a few other places.

Wow - how have I been living here for five years and only just discovered this place? What a gem! Tucked away in a little house next to the Walmart/Hollywood video shopping plaza, this place is easy to miss, but it's a shame if you do. My girlfriend and I braved the Friday evening crowd and decided on take out, since the place was packed to the gills. Even with a full, busy restaurant, our waitress was friendly and attentive, and our food was ready in 10 minutes! The food itself was fantastic. We split an enchilada combo and a bean/cheese quesadilla, and the portions were ample. Plus, the chicken was tender and cooked to perfection, the sauce was flavorful, and the quesadilla was sufficiently cheesy, without being greasy. Entrees are served with a container of grilled whole jalapenos and carmelized onions - what a super tasty treat! Also, my girlfriend's litmus test for a Mexican restaurant is their beans, and El Sur's are great - lardtastic and fragrant. Like most Mexican places, I wouldn't go here to count calories, although it looked like there were a couple of of potentially health-conscious options on the menu. I'm a little surprised this place has $$ listed for prices - everything I saw on the menu was under ten bucks, and there was an expansive list of specials for under seven. The two of us got out of there for something like $13 total. All-in-all, El Sur is a great find: tasty food, lightning quick service, friendly staff, and easy-on-the-wallet prices. The only reason I'm giving four stars, instead of five, is that the food doesn't match the artisanal quality of Cafe Poca Cosa - it's apples and oranges. For what it is, though, El Sur is wonderful.

I love El Sur. What more can I say. I've never regretted anything I've ever eaten there. The staff is totally awesome. I brought my family there over Christmas and my father-in-law is a HOT sauce aficionado. He didn't think their sauce was hot enough, so the waitress made another sauce with two addtional habinieros mixed in. The new blend was tasty and warm enough for him. But it was the extra mile that this lady went on a busy night to make him feel comfortable. That's commendable. El Sur is one of the best Mexican restaurants in town.

Very good food, very small prices!! Stopped for take out on a Monday evening, upon pulling up and parking, I saw a man leaving with a fairly good sized to go order, good sign in my book and there were enough people and tables to keep 3 very friendly wait-persons busy:) The woman who took my order (beef taco, cheese enchilada, red chili tamale w/rice & beans, my standard at a new Mexican restaurant to get a sampling) was unsure how to ring up my order as this was not a menu item combo, no problem though, she asked a male waiter for help and he jumped right in, making sure what kind of meat I wanted in each item. I also got the flan, I wasn't disappointed with any of my choices! I asked for extra salsa and it was right there in my chip bag, the girl who rang me up also made sure to ask if I wanted the grilled onions & peppers :) soooo good!!! Perfectly cooked with just the right amount of heat! My enchilada was not dry, it was moist and cheesy, topped with just the right amount of red sauce. The taco meat was a bit salty, but still yummy enough to almost finish. The tamale was awesome, and it even had my favorite green olive at one end:) Everything was fresh and obviously made with love:) As I was sitting waiting for my food I watched a family leaving, their waitress offered them cookies and even gave the young son a hug, I could tell they are regulars and it's nice to observe a truly happy waitress who obviously enjoys her customers, and her job!! Everyone there was happy and friendly, I will be returning, and my daughter who also sampled my dinner (she wanted pizza but after tasting mine wished she had tried El Sur too) loved it too!! It has taken me about a week to complete this review and I am almost embarrassed to admit this but.....we have been back 3 times :) YES it is THAT good! Try it, you will NOT be disappointed!

I LOVE this place. The people are extremely nice, even helped me park in their little parking spots. The food is delish and you get a lot of food. they have vegetarian options such as bean and cheese burrito or chimichanga. The salsa is great, and everything is hand made. The food comes out fast and fresh. I haven't eaten anything here i don't like. Mostly open for lunch. Busy but well worth it. Not exp. 6.00 will get you a special lunch deal. love it. My fav is the bean and cheese chimichanga, with rice.

An alcohol explosion plasters their walls now! Long Island Iced Tea, Margaritas, Bottled Beer. Everywhere you look the walls are covered with brightly colored signs begging you to drink and I LOVE IT. Probably not the best for someone in recovery or just starting to collect their "chips" but man, I love that these guys are just like, "we have alcohol, it's cheap, and we are going to tell everyone about it in magic marker and construction paper!" And I still can't get over the fact that chicken or steak fajitas are 4.99! Incredible.

Excellent service & authentic tasting food! Their salsas (both, mild & hot) are delicious - I could drink it straight! The ambiance could be better (fluorescent lighting), but not a big deal. The place was packed, but we found a table easily. I was shocked when the check came, I would've paid triple! We loved it!!

  • Ryan H.

The food was authentic, delicious, and clearly home-made. The tortillas in the enchiladas were really tasty, and the chicken tortilla soup is a must. Unfortunately, this restaurant is truly a "diamond in the rough (neighborhood)", so I'd recommend a daylight visit to El Sur unless you have a concealed carry permit, black belt, or guard dog (half-kidding).

I don't know why they're practically giving away the food here, but I stand solidly behind it. Even more solidly thanks to the heft I'm gaining from those bonkers green corn tamales. These prices are crazy by any standard, but super crazy for friendly service and delicious food you eat with a fork. The red chili is outstanding. I recommend it over straight beef, which was prepared well in my beef taco ,but nothing particularly memorable. I also appreciate that the beef is shredded-ish, which is a departure from the standard, stewed red chili cubes. You'll probably like it. Those green corn tamales, though. I've heard others in town are tops but I'm kind of afraid to find out, lest I lose my mind for sure. These are the best. Gracefully straddling that savory-sweet line, they're rich, silky, and delicious. Not even a little dry or sandy, these are the GCTs to beat. You'll DEFINITELY like them.

Just discovered this place recently. It's good, and cheap. Service is good. Lots of military people eating there, which I mention because they seem to know the fast and cheap lunch places on the east side. I can't remember what I had to eat but I remember it was good and being impressed by the low prices. We'll go here again and I'll update with more helpful details.

This is really 4.5 stars, but I'll round up. Great tasting salsa and chips (they refilled my chips literally within 5 seconds of me finishing the last chip). Extremely friendly service. The rice and beans were good. I ordered a shredded beef chimichanga, and it was very hot and crispy and a decent portion size. The beef didn't have that much flavor, but it was fresh, tender, and hot. They passed out free grilled onions and jalapenos. The onions were really sweet, and the jalapenos had a good flavor, but my tongue was burning from all the salsa I ate, and the jalapeno was kind of spicy. I tend to think my spicy tolerance is somewhat high, but this place was still spicy after a while (which is a good thing). Yes, the prices are pretty cheap for most of their things on the menu.

I can't believe I'm the first person to post about El Sur, This is by far one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Tucson. The food is great, especially anything with Chicken. They walk around and bring grilled onions and jalapenos to your table while eating. This place is very busy during lunch so don't be surprised to wait for a table, the restaurant is also very small but the staff is always friendly and we'll help you get a seat quickly.

okay, so i went home to hawaii for a month right after my first experience at el sur. all i could think about while on vacation in hawaii (where there's plenty of delicious, delicious food!!!) was el sur. now that i'm back in tucson, i've visited a couple of times. i am absolutely in love with this establishment. the mild pico de gallo is the most heavenly salsa i've ever tasted. i'm very impressed with the staff. i took my husband and daughter to eat there and when i went back, they asked me if they'd be joining me! good attention to detail there!

Can't stop eating here! I feel like I'm eating at Nanas house! The staff makes you feel right at home! Everything I have ordered is always delicious and never get shocked when the bill comes. It's hard to find good food at a reasonable price but this place has it ALL! Other restaurants need to take notes from El Sur! SALUD!

If you were looking for a place to eat and you drove by El Sur, you would look at it and keep on driving-- and it would be a big mistake. It is the definition of a great dive restaurant. Nothing fancy, but excellent Mexican food and fast, friendly service. All the nachos and salsa you can eat, the best flan anywhere, and prices so cheap that you purposely overtip the hard-working servers. It's so full of D-M patrons during lunch that they opened another one only a mile away. Get there early, no matter what day you go. A real diamond in the rough.

Their food has greatly improved since 2010-- We finally returned today to give them another shot. I got ground beef enchiladas with rice and beans and 2 homemade tortillas and my lunch buddy got chicken fajitas. Both were very good-- the enchilada sauce wasn't too spicy and very flavorful. I knocked a star off for 1. not getting more than a hand full of chips 2. the chips that we did get were good but a little greasy and 3. the beans had a weird gritty taste to them-- I ate them anyway but still. All in all much improved. Will probably go back.

While El Sur is nothing special by way of location or style (a small house off of 22nd turned into a Restaurant)- if you want some good quick Mexican then this is the place. Easy on your pocketbook, plenty of chips and salsa (you have a choice of hot or mild- or both!) daily specials are hard to beat and every plate comes with rice and beans. The food is good! I've never been disappointed here. Service has always been fast and friendly! Beer specials- $1.99 all day every day!!! Not much of a fan for their Margaritas. :)

    (4)
  • Christina C.

My friend Nali LOVES the place. It is great. I personally like the salsa and that it comes in a ketchup bottle :) (i like cute things like that) The ground beef tacos are always good. Mole and simple beand burrito is great as well. The fact that they offer roasted Chile on the spot is a plus. Very small place, friendly staff, and good prices. What more could you ask for in a Mexican Restaurant. F.Y.I. Going down 22nd street you might pass it so keep a lookout on the south side. of the street for the Bright Yellow building.

  • Carlos S.

Good food, fast service and low prices. The place is a dump so don't expect much. The owner isn't as friendly as the staff and didn't seem to care that French fries had been served in my Tortilla soup. So I've voted with my pocket book and stopped going.

    (3)
  • Suzi G.

1.99 margaritas (you get what you pay for), but 1.99 beers are hard to beat (especially since dos equis and negro modelo are on the list! ) 3 fish taquitos (tilapia grilled or fried - I will always go grilled) the fish looked starved and overcooked but dressed with their freshly made spicy salsa with shredded cabbage and pico de gallo made for perfect bites. The guacamole was standard but the chips were fresh and bottomless. There is a lovely man who walks around with perfectly fried onions and heavenly fire breathing jalapenos to add to your dish whatever it may be (like freshly ground pepper or shredded mozzarella at a fine italian restaurant). I wanted to substitute my rice and beans for a side salad, but they wouldn't let me so I got a taco salad instead. The salad requires a protein so I chose the green salsa not knowing it would come with deliciously slow cooked shredded beef (!) Pleasant surprise :D

    (5)
  • Melinda C.

We did go back and I tried the pan-fried tacos. What a disappointment! The shell was fried to a crisp and the shredded beef was so overcooked, it was almost like dust. I only ate 1 1/2 of the 3 tacos I had. I was so mad I thought we'd never go back, but hubby had the chicken mole and really liked his food. I'll have to try something different next time.

this place was GREAT! I went here randomly at 11a when a friend wanted mexican at breakfast. I was surprised by how fantastic the food was! It was really authentic food that wasn't greasy or anything! Overall a great little find that I will definitely be going back too!

I had a mad craving for Mexican food and since Poco & Mom's was closed and this place seemed cheap I dragged along my bf to try it. We were both very pleased with the food and service. The food is definitely homemade and their salsa was really good with all the different spices. For the price it's definitely worth it (I got the green chili chicken enchiladas for $5.99) and you end your meal feeling really full like almost all Mexican food lol. Although this place was good I really didn't feel "WOW"ed by it and I wish they gave us more chips which is why I am giving 4 stars. All in all El Sur is definitely worth going back to; it's not like you can miss that ugly yellow color lol.

  • Sylvie M.

El Sur is a great little Mexican restaurant in a bright yellow building, formerly might have been a house at one time. In my opinion, they have the best red chili in town. I like ther chips and salsa too. The service is always very friendly and pretty attentive for the most part. Four stars only due to the size of the parking lot and have to park off the street, and their bathroom out of soap a lot A great place otherwise. Cheap and they don't overload you with food, so you feel like a stuffed pig when you leave. This is definitely one of my top five Mexican restaurants in town.

  • Michael F.

I have to write a update for the stellar service I received the other night. Now I pride myself on showing my friends great culinary experiences all over town that blow their mind. Well I was almost a let down but El Sur came through again. Their hours said 9pm but they were getting ready to close early to start some rennovations. I don't know if the hungry look on our face earned us charity or that is just a reflection of the consistent stellar service I get there but either way they let us in. Now we werent the only ones there but they did look ready to shut down for the night. Our food was great as always, my friends loved the place, and the staff rocked our world and provided a great experience. What amazes me is a place that charges 5-8 bucks a plate has better service then places charging considerably more. I love El Sur and keep going back!

  • Griselda M.

Mexican cuisine is complex since dishes vary by region. At El Sur you get a sense of actually being at "el mercado" eating your lunch. You hear the clatter of dishes, the busy employees hurrying to get orders out and even the occasional arguments between the employees lol. Lunch time is busy even at 2:00 and sitting is limited. Parking is limited as well. Food was good and prices are average. Give it a try.

Best Mexican in Tucson...hands down. Cheap, delicious, authentic, DELICIOUS!! Great service. At first, I was skeptical because the outside looks shady, but fear not, this place is awesome. You must come try it out. Breakfast and lunch specials are great! My dad, a Tucson local, was super excited I found this place. Good job Yelpers!

  • James S.

By far the best Mexican food that I've come across in Tucson. I've never been disappointed by any of the offerings here. I highly recommend you try the Albondigas (meatball) soup the next time you stop by. All the girls who work here are very attentive and rather cheerful. I always feel at home here and can't wait to go back. Speaking of which..

Great authentic Mexican food! I recommend one of the daily lunch specials, which are usually under $5. All the food is great! You can't go wrong! During the week, lunch time tends to be pretty busy so get there early.

I eat Paleo, which means mostly meat and veggies, not much carb, so Mex can be a challenge. I asked for fajitas with no tortillas or rice or beans, and once the waitress clarified, she offered me a side salad. The fresh grilled onions and jalapenos were a treat, and the fajitas were good - not outstanding but very well executed. Huge drink cups (water!) and friendly service. It's a little loud, but I would be comfortable bringing kids here. Decent guac as a starter. Not a 5-star joint, but good, solid Mexican food with real people in a friendly atmosphere. Yum!

    (4)
  • Jamie A.

One thing is for sure, this place has delicious and authentic mexican food for about $6/plate. Not bad at all. I went with the girlfriend tonight, she got the green chili tamales which she seemed to absolutely love. I got a cheese enchilada, a shrimp taco, and a sonoran hotdog to try a little bit of everything. However, much to my dismay(and one of the reasons I took off a star), they were completely out of hot dogs. We ended up ordering the flan for dessert, girlfriend won't stop telling people about it. 4.5/5 - Food 4.5/5 - Venue 4/5 - Service (Our waitress took a little longer than I would like, but she was still extremely nice)

In the past six months I have eaten here at least 10 times! Wanted to know what Mexican food restaurant Tucsonans loved after being away from home for a lot of years. I read all the reviews about El Sur, which turns out to be less than 2 miles from home. I started with the green chili corn tamales....OMG! Fantastic! I made everybody at the table try them! Everybody loved them. The second time I tried them they weren't quite as good; but I suppose it's like making cookies - sometimes a batch will turn out better than others! I have tried numerous things here since then. I love the ground beef flautas; nothing fancy, just good flavor. Also loved the bisteck ranchero; so flavorful! While I certainly prefer somethings on the menu more than others, I haven't had a bad meal here yet! The prices here are unbelievably cheap! And the servers and the hostess are super friendly! The only thing that prevents me from giving this restaurant 5 stars is the building itself....it appears to have once been a single family home, so you can imagine how small it is. The tables and chairs are very basic and the building itself can't hold a lot of them. It is very clean, though! If you consider yourself a foodie, you have to try this place!!!

  • Trevor C.

Best Mexican food this side of the border, hands down. Got $6-7? You got yourself a lunch! Yes, you can eat for $6-7 + tip!! This place usually has daily specials for $4.99 and Mexican beer (Domestic also) for $2. Soft drinks also available. Lunch or dinner is just fantastic, always extremely fast, friendly, and attentive servers. They will have your drink orders and a basket of tortilla chips and salsa about 30 seconds after your butt hits the seat. This is a house that has been converted into a restaurant (a small house) but if you aren't too claustrophobic then it is fantastic for lunch or dinner. Small, casual east side location with a very large two sided menu. I think they 'specialize' in seafood dishes, fish tacos, shrimp, etc. However, I have not eaten any of the seafood choices, I'm always looking forward to beef chimichanga style burrito! Once your food arrives they will bring by sauteed onions and roasted jalepenos if you'd like them. I always say yes to both, the onions always taste great added to the food, the jalepenos they bring you are hit or miss when it comes to the spiciness of them, so be warned! Sometimes they are very flavorful but not spicy, other times my mouth burns for at least 20 minutes! All in all, this place has absolutely unbeatable prices (seriously, I know hot dog carts that charge more for a Sonoran Dog then this place does for an entire meal, and this place tastes better!), great service, and a decent atmosphere (it can be a bit loud at times due to the small space). One disclaimer - large groups be warned, it is very small in there! Their tables usually only fit 4 but if you call ahead they can accomodate a bit larger maybe 8 max.

My wife and I treat ourselves to El Sur on a regular basis. The food is phenomenal, the staff is always polite and ready to help and you cannot beat the price! This little restaurant is one of Tucson's gems for sure!

If you don't mind elbow-to-elbow lunch dining, El Sur is fantastic. We popped in because Poco & Mom's was closed, and were richly rewarded by the $5.99 chicken fajita lunch special. They have to be losing bank on the huge platters, and the chicken is char-grilled and savory among delicious onions and red and green bells. My partner tipped me off that the salsa was in ketchup and mustard bottles when we ran out - good to know that "mustard" packs a sweet punch. The margaritas are just the sweet and sour ticket alongside. My handsome, tolerant partner and I were buffeted, bumped, and knocked around a bit because of the sardine-packing, but we rolled with it like passengers on a posh cruise ship. The tables were turning with dizzying frequency, but the service was still attentive. El Sur is no place to divulge intimate secrets during lunch, but who cares when your meal is this fabulous?

Awesome find while on vacation. We wanted to go to a place where locals go and boy did we find the right spot. The staff was super friendly and knew all of the regulars by name. The food is cheap but do not mistake that for low quality. Everything was fresh and flavorful! Get the churros--YUM!!!

This place is always packed. So it sometimes takes awhile to get your food, so don't go if you're in a rush but so worth the wait! It's super casual and very authentic. Even the tortillas were homemade! The cheese enchiladas were incredible and so where the fajitas. You could tell the margaritas were legit and didn't have sour mix, they were delicious!!! I will go back! My tip.... Try the new location on 29th not as busy but still constantly delicious. My favorite Mexican joint!

El Sur on 22nd St is now shockingly yellow but it is still THE place to go for Mexican soups on the eastside. Pollo (chicken/veg soup) with Pan Birote is probably my favorite, but sometimes Cocido (beef/veg soup) with Corn Tortillas just hits the spot. The soups are served in small and large sizes, but small is plenty big. Still to be avoided: the Guacamole. (Seriously, who puts shredded cheese in their guacamole?)

Why does it seem that the further East you go in Tucson the less spice restaurants use in their food. Dont get me wrong, there are a few things to really love about this place. It's cheap...really cheap. And you get some good portions. They give you some grilled onions and jalapenos if you want with your meal. Both great things. The waitstaff is attentive too. The reason for the 3 stars is that the food just wasn't that flavorful. The chips were cold. The "hot" salsa was mild as can be to me. My friend who doesn't usually like spicy food agreed with me (a first). I got chicken mole which was weak. IT tasted like peanubutter with chicken and cocoa. there was barely any spice. My friend, the one who likes things bland, said his fried tacos had absolutely no flavor. The beans had a similar issue... The consistancy of the food was right but the flavor was all off. Since I go to restaurants to eat good food, I can't possibly give this place more than 3 stars.

  • Gina M.

Excellent Cheap Authentic local Mexican food in Tucson! $5 specials are great, Strawberry Margaritas age great for a couple of bucks! Great portion sizes, you will likely have plenty left on your plate! You will always have quick, friendly wait staff...but may not always have a place to sit, because at lunch time this place is PACKED!!! Whatever you do, park on the side street because you can severely damage your car on the ramp outside the restaurant if you're not careful!

Great service. The women hustle but you feel taken care of. Unfortunately mediocre food. Supermarket tortillas! Come on. So so food.

    (2)
  • Cheryl S.

It's exactly what you need for cheap, good Mexican food. Casual, crowded atmosphere, but nothing wrong with that. The place is always busy, and the waitstaff have got it under control. They slam out the chips as soon as you sit down, and have a pretty full menu of cheap eats. We had the taco salad, the fajitas, tamales- all good. It's not fancy but when the ginormous plate of fajitas is five bucks, I'd rather know I was paying for the food rather than crap art on the wall or something.
