I have been going here for breakfast on and off for 9 years. I love the food here, but man the experience varies. My husband has a rule, if you can't get there before 9am don't bother. They can get busy fast! When it's busy it's hard not to let that distract you from the meal your about to receive, since the tables are close together and the space gets noisy. A few times I've been seated in the booths which are along the front of the establishment; at busy times customers will hold open the front door waiting to put in their name, causing either hot air or cold air to blow on me. Boo. They have consistent food quality and service. It isn't the best in town, but it's good. I have a fondess for their chocolate chip pancake, with whipped cream. The pancake edges are crispy and yummy. I couldn't eat more than one one, since one is the size of a platter. They offer a good eggs benedict. I like the homey interior, with shelves holding bird houses, quilts on the wall and race car stuff all over the wall near the front desk. Also in the last few years, they added framed photography for sell all over the wall (who buys theses I do not know; gem and mineral show people?). The coffee cups are a mixed lot of local things, halmark mugs and fun things. I always look at my mug once i'm seated to see what I get. They have once unisex bathroom in the back, which is always clean. However, if you have a large party keep in mind there is one bathroom for everyone to share. Frequently we take out of town company here;when my sister visits, for breakfast it's a must go to. I've been here for lunch and dinner (seasonally offered); but it's the breakfast that have kept me going back again and again.

This is me and my husbands favorite breakfast spot. Not expensive. Fabulous food for breakfast, and lunch.

Had the french toast combo. It came with one egg and choice of bacon or sausage. I chose the sausage. Everything was great! Homestyle cooking. Would give 5 stars but the coffee was not that great. Customer service was good, not overbearing.

I have been to the Crying Onion several times. The food is good. I like the homey atmosphere and the staff is always friendly. The blueberry pancakes can be hit or miss. Sometimes they have way too many blueberries other times just not enough. My husband really enjoyed his Randy's Carolina omelet which he said had plenty of bacon. My only real complaint is the prices. Yes, the food is good but it is over priced.

Great Mom and Pop Restaurant with excellent homemade food. Breakfast was delcious, definitely recommend the Huevos Rancheros

Craving a sweet potato pancake the size of your face? This is your place! The service here is always very good and they make me feel like I am a regular even though I am not. The prices are more than Jerry Bob's but the selection is vast. Food is consistently good and the portions are large. Some could consider the decor tacky but I have always found it to be quaint. The dining room is small and has more people sitting in it than a church on Easter morning. Don't let that intimate you. Go, GO GO maybe even run there right now ( if it is during there limited business hour's! ). This is a must try on the Northwest side.

I've been here three previous times for breakfast. Past experiences have been very good. Today, the food remained good as usual, however, the service was slow and unfriendly. I was disappointed by the lackluster attitude of the server.

Never Yelped. Haven't been here in a loooong time. We rolled in late morning during the week. Busy, but no wait. A country kitchen motif. Tres kitsch. A local crowd. Great menu selection, good portions. Good with substitutions. Although, the build your own omelet can get rather pricey.

Went there for the first time on a Sunday morning. As soon as we walk in the hostess asks how many. We tell her 4 but only 2 of us were there at the time. She tells us we can't seat you yet until your entire party gets here. I can totally understand that but when there are 8 open tables I don't understand that. There's a sign that says during peak hours the entire party must be present to seat them. It really baffles me that they wouldn't with that many tables open. Other than that the food was good and service was great. Expected sweet potato pancakes to be a little more flavorful.

This is a cute little brunch spot and the food is okay. I ordered the eggs Benedict and my husband ordered an omelet topped with gravy and we were both satisfied and full when we left. The waitress was friendly and would often top off my coffee or water, her attentiveness was appreciated. I also liked that they played some oldies but goodies on the restaurant radio. There is some nice charm and they have newspapers for reading and we are always more likely to support a local business over a chain.

Homemade, fresh, delicious, big portions....what else do I need to say? Okay, I'll tell you. Huevos Rancheros were served hot , a large portion with warm tortillas. The pork was soft, covered with an over-easy egg, this was a great breakfast, that kept us full through lunch. Their sausage biscuit special had homemade biscuits with sausage in the middle, covered with their delicious gravy. I am annoyed when food is ruined by too much salt, so I was worried about this dish. The biscuit was fluffy and light, the sausage had little greasiness and the gravy was smooth, creamy (not gloppy), perfectly seasoned and HOT. My other pet peeve is cold gravy, so,I considered this the perfect breakfast. I would come early on weekends, but we will be back for sure. I wish I could have been here with my parents. This is the kind of homey place they loved.

Always packed, but well worth the wait. Normal breakfast food but it's the wonderful service and well cooked food that has my guy going back often!

This is seriously the best place for breakfast. The food is amazing, the staff is super nice, and the toast is magical. Love!

You have to try their homemade food. Awesome. And then for desert try the triple chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. To die for.

I love the sweet potato pancakes but their seating policy is ridiculous! Would not seat us until our fourth person got there. It wasn't busy and they let a couple groups ahead of us. There was no line, more than 5 tables available and we just had to sit and wait! Not customer friendly especially when you had two very hungry and bickering nieces! They ended up seating us after a bit and the food ended up being really good. The vegetable soup was delicious! I added a star. Give it a try.

This adorable little restaurant is located in the strip mall of Sam Levitz -- toward the back. Arriving, Crying Onion seems very quiet and docile, but this place gets to be very, very busy. The wait was almost 15 minutes, and it was worth it. For the anxious, they have magazines and newspapers at the entrance for the wait. You can tell by the space that someone is putting their heart into it. It's the kind of restaurant I would have liked to have taken my great-grandmother. On the wall, you will find framed photos -- sometimes still in their original cardboard cases -- of generic landscape photography: cactus plants, canyons, wildlife. They even have quilts thumb tacked to the walls, and most every wall is sponge painted in teal. No lie. This place is rigged for comfort and low maintenance. I imagine that if Tina Turner and David Bowie weren't world-famous icons, this is where they would spend their Sunday morning brunch. The staff is uber friendly -- granted, run off of their feet because the customers just keep coming through the door. And right now, the cafe is decorated with plastic leaves and branches for the fall season, which gives it a very light, bright and loud feel. I was surprised to find the diverse range of folks waiting for tables and enjoying their meals. Yes, this place does have a sizable draw of people who look like they have just come off of a cross country trip in their RVs. But you also find families of all sizes, young couples, college-age friends and the like. Classic, all-American neighborhood diner-style. They also have Smuckers jelly in cute little baskets on all the tables. I love that. And the place keeps pretty cool, thanks to the fans overhead. Strange thing, though: you cannot smell the food. But you can smell the strong tinge of black coffee. Also, the music dips in and out. You can't really hear it -- lest, the music is full of low-range pitches, at which point you can hear the monotonous sound of the bass, and that is about all. Which begins to scratch your nerves after a while. Seems like the go-to menu items for folks are the omelets, pancakes and scramblers. All seem very popular. I went with the eggs Benedict! I have been trying to master hollandaise sauce at home. Until that day, I will continue to frequent - with robust enthusiasm -- places like the Crying Onion. Here, the hollandaise is bright orange (yes, orange), thick and with a slight sharpness from the lemon. I gather that they make it in bulk rather than with each order. It doesn't have that lovely, soft, buttery taste or feel to it. Still, it was quite good.

It's worth the wait if you want the taste of sweet potato pancakes! French toast looks great too. As for regular breakfast items they are as good as any other cafe.

We have eaten here a few times. The service is great and the food is outstanding for breakfast. Get here either early or late but unless you want to wait don't come during prime time breakfast because this place can pack out pretty quick. This is probably one of the best chicken fried steak and eggs I have ever eaten. The coffee cake instead of the toast is the way to go. The portion sizes are good and I never walk out hungry.

The Crying Onion holds a soft spot in my heart. My husband and I used to come here for breakfast on occasional Sunday mornings and we always had great food and customer service. However I haven't been back since he passed 3 years ago. My daughter L and I were out bright and early on Saturday morning and decided to get our morning fuel at the CO. This place gets PACKED but like I said, we were out really early and were able to walk right in and be seated immediately! That has NEVER happened to me here before. The CO posts daily specials on the white board up by the hostess/cashier station by the kitchen and on this day, we both chose a special. Mine was the 1/2 biscuit & gravy, side of bacon (or sausage) and one egg. L had the blueberry french toast special that included an egg and bacon or sausage. My dish was cooked perfectly and the gravy was so good and flavorful. Just like home! I really like the bacon at CO, it's meaty and thick. L's blueberry french toast was soft yet a bit crusty and soooo good. A light dusting of powdered sugar covered the top and melted right in to the dish, enhancing the sweet flavor all the more. The decor here is definitely country kitchen kitsch and to be honest, looks a little tired. But perhaps all that crap on the walls and shelves adds to the charm of this little place. And who doesn't love the mismatched, often sporting local business logos, coffee-cups?! I just wish they served a better cup of coffee in those thrift store cups. The coffee tastes a bit bland. I think they'd do well to liven up the morning java to appease all the coffee connoisseurs.

If you want a solid American Breakfast, this is probably the place for you... unless you think that breakfast should cost less than $10. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Crying Onion. The food is straightforward American comfort food: Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon, Omelettes... and a very good Creamed Chipped Beef! The service is competent and professional in that great American Diner kind of way. The decor is genuinely sunny and homey. In short, your grandparents would love the place, and you probably will too... that is, until you get the bill and realize that for what you just paid, you could have had a lot of other options open to you. For the same money, you can go to 5 Points Market, Coronet Cafe, or Little Cafe Poca Cosa and get a TRULY remarkable breakfast that you will remember. For about half the price, you can go to Bobo's and get the exact same food. Granted, you won't be in Marana, and the crowd may be a little grittier than you are used to, but it will do you good.

Literally the best banana pancakes I have ever had. The only thing that would make it better is if they had fresh squeezed juice.

Easily the best breakfast place I have been to in a while! In Tucson for a house hunting trip, read the reviews on Crying Onion and decided to give it try, not disappointed at all! I had the Meat Lovers Omelette, which was delicious and their home fries are for certain made fresh, soft and crispy. The staff was very pleasant, our order was taken quickly and our server was quick on drink refills. Overall really great food and a super service, will be back when back in Tucson!

I came to this place after reading reviews on here and I wasn't very impressed. First of all, we had to wait about 15 in order for us to be sat which wouldn't have been that big of a deal had the place been packed-it clearly wasn't. In addition to that, for about 10 of those 15 minutes no one even acknowledged our existence to even just merely say they would be with us shortly. After we sat down and placed our drink order it was about 15 mins before we saw our waitress again to place our orders, which was bizarre because a few people came in after we did (our waitress knew them by name) and they got to order before did. When we finally ordered, I was very displeased to discover I could not substitute my eggs for something else as I did not feel like consuming eggs that morning. The pancake combo was disappointing because although it is a giant pancake, it is thin and not very much to it. The home fries were pretty good except for a little bit salty for my taste. My sausage was a bit dry as if it had been cooked way early that morning. I didn't like that the place lack ambiance, no audible music or anything to make the dining experience more enjoyable. We ordered 3 combo plates and it was $45!! Holy cow I could have had steak for the price of that breakfast. In all honesty, I'd rather go to IHOP or even Waffle House than back to that place-especially because of the price.

I got the half biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs. I have to say the gravy reminded me of my dad's and that's a high compliment. The service was really friendly and speedy. I'll definitely be returning to try something new and bring a friend.

The food is good and I have eaten here before with my spouse. However, when I went to lunch and dined alone, my meal was interrupted by the hostess who told me I had to pay for the lunch right now at the table. Whenever I ate there with my spouse, he went to the front booth to pay the check, after the meal. It was insulting because I have never walked out without paying, at any restaurant.

My favorite breakfast place in Tucson. Their California omelette is awesome! Extremely fast and friendly service. If your on the Nw side of town give it a try.

I don't care how good the food is. Not allowing me to sit as I waited for a friend is. Ridiculous policy. Not customer service friendly even though there were tons of places to sit!!! Rigidity not a good thing when it comes to customer service.

When we got here it wasn't as packed as I thought it would be after reading all the other reviews. We got seated right away, and got served our coffee right away. But the only thing that lagged was our waitress. She came to our table three time to tell us she would be right with us. I watched her the whole time she kept chatting it up with the guest and filling empty coffee mugs. It wasn't till 20 minutes after being there she finally came and took our order. I ordered the sweet potato pancakes which were ok. a little on the sweet side for me, and a side of eggs that eased out the sweet from the pancakes. I would go back, but I won't expect too much.

We stopped here on our way passing through and I'm so glad we did. They give you an option instead of toast or biscuit to order coffee cake. DO IT!! It was amazing. Everything we ordered was so fresh and fantastic. I highly recommend stopping in.

We love to have breakfast here...it is one of our favorite places!!! We love the FRESH FRUIT, excellent omelets with so many fresh ingredients. We especially LOVE their apple pancakes which cover a large plate, with juicy chunks of apple, butter, and maple syrup. This restaurant has a very country grandma type atmosphere which adds to the ambience. No waiting to be seated at 11:15 am, always very friendly waitresses, outstanding food served hot, and their coffee is terrific. A great Mom and Pop experience!

  • Cody T.

As many have said, good food but slow service. The staff was extremely friendly, so I'm guessing the problem is in the kitchen. (took 45 minutes for our breakfast to be delivered). We'll give it another try to see if it was just an anomaly or a chronic condition!

I've been meeting my Dad and sister here for breakfast for months. For the most part I enjoy it here. The staff is nice and owner seems friendly. I've ordered a lot of different items, and sometimes I do recommend being cautious of your selection. However, this place has the BEST veggie omelette I've ever had!

Visiting an old friend, watching Tiger choke on a 5 foot putt, and enjoying beautiful weather to choke on a few 5 foot putts of my own. Before we played on Sunday, we went to Crying Onion for breakfast and WOW, the blueberry pancake was off the chart!!! Simply delicious, perfectly cooked over easy eggs, bacon and ice cold milk is my idea of the perfect breakfast!!! Great service, friendly people, if I thought it would do any good I'd ask you to open a Crying Onion here in beautiful downtown Sidney, IA.

I must admit I was a bit skeptical about this restaurant. I mean its in a strip mall next to a Laundromat how good of a place can this be? Don't judge the book by its cover. I peeked inside and noticed the place was packed around 11am on a Monday with local patrons at this local establishment. I had my eye set on the Chicken Parmesan for which was one of the today's specials however by the time they sat us the special was already gone. Everyone is very friendly and the service is top notch. I ended up with the Chicken Fried Steak and immediately you can tell this was handmade and not shipped in. I did expect the place to ship in their food. Even the home fries were good. All and all I was very impressed with the quality of the items and very tasty. I am sure my cholesterol was very high afterwards only because of my selection not because of the quality.

This place reminds me of a transplanted truck stop somewhere on I-95's mountainous region. Fresh grilled home fries, eggs, over sized flat pancakes, bitter coffee and a small open dining area. The dining area was is need of a good deep clean and the carpet made me glad I was wearing shoes! Service was lacking and the atmosphere is bland. The food was adequate I had the chirizo grilled with eggs, home style refried beans and home fries. The serving amounts are very large, and very heavy in griddle butter. I tasted quit a bit of bacon grease in the refried beans (a common flavoring tactic) so if you're looking for heart healthy food this is NOT the place to go. If you want a decent home style breakfast that will put you back to sleep after consuming then The Crying Onion is your destination spot. Food comes out hot and timely. 3 stars for this "heart attack waiting to happen" establishment! No frills, just solid food.

  • Kurt B.

For lunch we had the crying onion burger and an omelet, both very tasty. The fries with the burger were above average and the home fries with the omelet were very good. I think the crying onion burger was one of the top five burgers I've ever had. Would definitely come back.

Three stars for their sweet potato pancakes and friendly service. Otherwise it is like an old Dennys. Coffee sucks.

Breakfast food offerings were much different than most restaurants. This makes me want to go back until I've tasted every offering. This time it was sweet potato pancake combo. One very large (but thin) sweet potato pancake with carmelized sugar and cinnamon ( absolutely to die for) one egg any style, and 2 strips of bacon. And the coffee!! Even if I didn't absolutely love the food I would still go for the coffee!! Best coffee around!! The prices were a little steep but the food and coffee were worth it.

Went on a Friday morning around 1030. We were greeted promptly, had a 10 minute wait and were seated. Yes, we had a fifteen minute wait for our food which is about right for a fresh made breakfast. We ordered the apple cinnamon pancakes and the Sonoran scramble. Both were excellent with generous portions. Service was attentive and pleasant.

Don't believe the poor reviews! Excellent menu variety, home baked goods, healthy and down home greasy options for all. My egg white veggie omelette was perfect. Build your own omelette is a plus!! The wheat berry toast is a tasty and healthy option. Coffee cake- yummy! Service was friendly, prompt and helpful. Give it a try, you won't be sad you did!

Food is good. IF you can get in. Went this morning for breakfast. Party of 2. Knew we would have to wait. Waitress told us several tables were opening up at once. Table for 7 seated, although only 6 were there. They have huge sign saying "during peak hours, all members of the party must be present to be seated." Apparently not true. Then, two parties of four were seated BEFORE us, although we had gotten our name on the liist before them. So, in addition to waiting for 20 minutes for a table, we'd have 8 people getting orders in before we ordered, although they all came 10 minutes plus after we arrived They need to separate the hostess/cashier position. Creates a HUGE lag in seating, etc. Probably won't go back. We knew there would be a wait, but people getting seated ahead of us just isn't acceptable, even for a "mom and dad" place.

    (3)
  • Stephen C.

We couldn't get in because they kept seating people ahead of us. We think we overheard that they were giving preferential treatment to friends/family of employees. We stood outside for nearly an hour, even though several tables were open. Very poor!!! Don't go here!

Food is almost always good, the reason it gets 3 stars is because the service is consistently bad. I mean bad over a span of at least 3 years. Waitresses are unfriendly and its almost impossible to get promt service. The only reason we go back is because the food is good.

Is this the same Crying Onion that was on Ft Lowell back in the 70's We always had a great time here and they had great breakfasts. It's where I learned the asparagus omelet.

    (4)
  • Cyrinda V.

I'm only giving it 4 stars because of the wait to order out food. I had just worked all night and was grumpy, and my boyfriend and I waited at least 15 minutes to put our order in after we were seated. Aside from that, everything was spectacular! The food came out relatively quick, and was absolutely DELICIOUS! One of the best breakfasts I've had in all honesty. I recommend the eggs benedict on their home made biscuits instead of english muffins, soooo good and reminded me of the Benedict my grandma makes for Palm Sunday brunch. We will definitely be back again.

Really good food and friendly service. The place does get ridiculously busy sometimes which can be a hassle but I've never had a bad meal.
