Club Congress was easily my favorite bar after living in tucson for 3 months over the summer i love the casual vibe and the diff areas in the bar that can fit any type of night you're trying to have. want a more casual night? sit out back in the outdoor patio area. ready to dance the night away aggressively? hide out in the side room where music is blasting & there's enough room to break out your moves ALWAYS A GOOD TIME & they have pickle backs on some days NOTE: $10 minimum on credit card only, which was only enforced sometimes

My favorite downtown hangout. This historic hotel can be described as local and diverse. There are all different bars and areas within the bar to experience. Two different areas that have music going on... inside and out. The Cups Cafe restaurant is super yummy. If you live in town or are just visiting this is a must stop.

Club Congress is a hodge-podge of everything! All sorts of music. All sorts of people. All sorts of events going on. Hotel, cafe, and night-club. Indoor and outdoor. Old an new. And half the time it is kind of going on all at once - so if you aren't feeling one room, then skip over to the next room for the next experience! You can either party up hard in one room or go to the next and hide in a dark corner. Hard to not like this place, and that is why it seems like everyone seems to hit Congress somewhere during their night out in Tucson.

Congress is high atop my list of recommendations for anyone visiting Tucson. The ambiance is chic and modern but laced with history and a cool backstory starring John Dillinger. The bartenders are courteous and classy and really know their stuff. Plus, Congress is one of Tucson's premiere live music venues and their sound crew always does a great job making the artists sound fantastic!

Congress is a good ole' Tucson classic! Part hotel, part cafe, yet at night transforms into a lively social scene with live music and dancing! For this particular occasion, it was my dear friend's 21st birthday. We were greeted by the friendly doorman, Taha who gave us Hawaiian necklaces to celebrate Spring Break! We meandered between the main lobby, both inside bars, outside and the dance floor. Outside had some nice live bluesy music and inside had current EDM and pop hits. You really can find it all at Hotel Congress!

Just to be clear, I love Congress. I love this place like I love my aging, dotty aunt who still gets speeding tickets at 93. We've spent many a raucous New Year's Eve together, paraded proudly in our skivvies at the Underwear Party, and rocked out to the likes of James McMurtry, Terraplane Sun, and DeVotchKa. Yes, downtown historic properties must uphold standards of integrity, but it's time for air conditioning, plain and simple. At the recent Jen Kirkman show, one woman passed out, and the comedienne herself was so uncomfortably hot onstage under those lights that she openly ordered from the bar. Air conditioning will in no way compromise the cool funk that draws tourists and townies in equal number. Once my aunt confuses the gas for the brake pedal, I'll tell her the same thing. It's just time for a change.

I'm afraid to say anything negative about this place, but I'm going to anyway. I would like to say that the bartenders are ALWAYS nice and accommodating. They are swift on their feet and know how to pour a good drink. Also, the venue is awesome. It's full of old-timey charm and it's a nice change from the cookie-cutter bars on the East side. With that being said, there is something about the clientele that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I know that's kind of a broad statement, but every time I come here, I get this overwhelming sensation that I don't fit in. I feel like a crowd like this should be a little more less judgmental of others who don't look exactly how they do. For example, I feel out of place because I don't have half of my head shaved like Skrillex or have something tattooed above my eyebrow. I mean, am I alone in this feeling? Nonetheless, I like coming here, but just on nights where it's not a** to a** crowded.

  • Mike C.

They've got the two dance floors open on the weekend, which is awesome. Drinks are also very reasonably priced. I'm not too fond of some of the bartenders though.

  • Rich Y.

The bar in the lobby has Fernet. If you're familiar with Fernet, get your fix here. If you've been wanting to try Fernet, get it here and tell them Rich sent you. Rich's recommendation: Fernet. The bartenders in the lobby specialize in "craft" more than those manning the other bars inside so go to them if you like drinks with more than three ingredients.

I lived in the building across the street in 2012 and loved having this place right at my fingertips! The bartender Keith makes the best dirty martinis in the city. Its got the best vibe for outdoor catch-ups with friends and people watching. It is a little too hipster/trendy college vibe sometimes depending on the music. BUT when all else fails...sit outside with your friends and watch the people of Tucson entertain you all night long. Was a very big fan of the Nightmare on Congress event during Halloween.

Oh how I miss Tucson and it's bars. Hotel Congress is where it's at. Great music. Great drinks. Bring a bunch of friends and just let loose. There is so much space, and the interior looks fantastic in it's 1920s decor. A night out in the Dirty-T is never complete without a visit to Congress.

NEVER in my life been so humiliated. A group of friends and i went here for a few drinks this past Saturday night. After standing at the bar for 5 mins waiting to get served - two guys walked up to one of the gals in our group and started giving her a hard time. I quickly told them "look we're just trying to get some drinks and have a good time". Out of no where i was put in a choke hold and dragged out like a rag-doll. Are you kidding me! Come to find out - the guy who dragged me out was the manager! To be honest - i really didn't know what i did wrong. If anything, i think the whole situation could've been handled in a more professional manner. It wasn't like i was starting a fight nor talking crap of any sort. Talk about poor management. Besides from poor management - this place is awesome - great drink specials - great atmosphere - and great people to mingle with. I on the other hand would most likely never step foot in this place again. KCYE... My reply to mikes comment - Mike- i honestly never laid a hand on you. I didnt know who you were nore did you ever tell me you were. Thought you were some creep messing with one of the gals in my party. I wasn't drunk one bit and i know what happen, i know what I said and did. I will stand by what I wrote. What you and your employee did to me was very unprofessional and rude. I've NEVER EVER been so humiliated in my life. If I was as drunk as you made it seemed then this post would've never made it on here. But thank you for the humiliation and the bruises. Please keep up the good work, and do what you do best. KCYE Don V

Club Congress is one of my favorite venues for drinks, music, trivia, and dancing. There's several fun events throughout the year, Retro Game Show nights. This is the one place I recommend to everyone visiting Tucson.

I can summarize my experiences(which are many) at Club Congress as "A little bit of something for everyone". Club Congress is my go to when I'm going out with a new or diverse group of friends. If you want to dance, you can. If you want to sit and chat, you can. There is usually great music(both bands and DJs) and often times different areas with different types. (i.e. A little bit of hip hop inside, some top 40 outside). Not to mention, it is an awesome building and historical place in Tucson. Who doesn't love to party where the bandit John Dillinger was caught. Twice! The patio is probably one of my favorite in Tucson and an awesome place to people watch. Congress attracts such an interesting array of people. Young, old, hipster, college student, etc. Now let's get to the good stuff: drinks! I feel like there is always a great drink special on the weekends and the bar staff is awesome. They efficiently take care of a high volume of customers with a great attitude. With 4 bars(sometimes 5 if there is an outside bar), the wait is not usually more than a minute or two. Tip them well! Whether you're trying to get a bit rowdy on a Saturday night or just grabbing a casual drink with a friend, Congress is great.

I like the venue, and I like the prices of the drinks... but what makes me give this place a ONE STAR is the horrible security guards and their attitudes toward their guests. I came here one night for a "private" party. The organization that I am out a section outside the patio area for about 150 people. Upon arriving, I had a bottle of soda on me and did not realize that I brought it in. After hanging out with friends and meeting new friends, I walked over to the bar to order some drinks. I did not get any kind of warning, but one of the security guards here grabbed my drink that I forgot I had in hand, and asked me what was in it. I told him it was soda, and he accused me sneaking in drinks and forced (not asked) me to leave. I told him that I did not know that we are not allowed to bring any kinds of drinks in and that the person stamping and checking IDs did not stop me when he saw me with my drink. The security guard continued to tell me to leave the party even after I kindly explained myself. After I told him I was with a large private party, he said, "Well, let me get my manager. It is up to him. If he is OK with you being here, then I will pretend this never happened." He then asked me to follow him, and I refused. I told him that I do not feel comfortable going somewhere alone with him after he threatened to kick me out and acted so rudely towards me. I told him that I would be happy to talk to his manager, but he will have to bring his manager to me. He refused and told me to bring one of my friends with me instead. We literally walked less than 20 steps to another side of the room (opened to the public), and he then made me wait another 10 minutes for the manager. He kept apologizing for making me wait, as if he started getting anxious. When the manager finally came, the manager apologized to me without me even explaining or saying a word. The manager said that it was their fault for not telling me in the beginning. The manager left after that, and I did not even get an apology from the security guard who acted aggressively towards me. Throughout the night, I tried to look for him to get his name, but is unable to find him. If the manager sees this, please know how very upset I am with the behavior of your staff. I do not remember his name, but he is a 5'5" gentleman with a bigger build, and a shaved head with some dark skin tone. Do let him know that I do not accept his behavior and hope that he does not act so aggressively towards anyone, let alone a lady who tried to explain herself!

Club Congress is my favorite place to go downtown. It's clean with a fun dance floor. The crowd is a good mix, I was able to bring my parents here a few years ago without having to worry about drunk kids all over the place (like 4th ave..ugh!!). They had live entertainment outside at that time, which was so fun! There is an outside patio area if you need to get away from the noise and get some fresh air. My favorite bartender is definitely "Cookie" (tatted, retro pin up gal) she's awesome and hooks you up with some good drinks.

Downtown Tucson has evolved immensely over the past decade or so, transforming from a breeding ground for bums junkies to an attractive destination worth making the trek from wherever I have lived in recent years. During the transfiguration, there have been few mainstays that have been able to not only survive, but thrive and even grow. Club Congress is one of those businesses that continues to be a staple of downtown Tucson despite the overall revolution that has surrounded it. I remember attending many shows at Congress -- mostly underground hip hop (Eyedea and Abilities, Sage Francis, Blueprint, Aesop Rock, etc.) -- back in the early 2000's and somehow this place has been able to improve while maintaining the charm that made it such a unique and classic ground for music fans to catch rising and independent musical acts. Most recently, I went to watch Grum -- a Scotish DJ who plays mostly Electroclash and Nu Disco -- and I left as impressed as ever. Attentive bartenders; quality sound system; Good crowd (despite the girl who dropped an entire bottle of Dos Equis on the dance floor and proceeded to pretend nothing happened) and the vibe at the event was pleasurable. The most entertaining part of the evening, however, was seeing people attempt to come in through the front door of the club (it was locked) and then ponder the next step despite the door for Hotel Congress being mere feet away. I look forward to trips to Club Congress for as long as I will reside in the Tucson area.

There aren't a lot of places in Tucson that I get amped about going to, but I really like the Hotel Congress. It's always nice here at night, so that they have ample outdoor patio seating, filling $5 snacks, and trivia Tuesdays all works ok for me. I recommend especially the brie and the cod tacos from the bar menu. Went to see a show here for the first time last night and it was a pretty great venue - intimate, neat lighting, and though we arrived just before the headliner my friends and I were still able to stand towards the front. There seems to be a less-active indie scene in this town than what I'm used to, but a committed and jovial crowd nonetheless. I'll definitely be back, and not just because my friend forgot to closer her tab there last night.

Never having been to Downtown Tucscon, I was surprised at the nightlife and bars. Everything looked fun, but Congress was our choice for the last part of our night. I think the outdoor patio is great! String lights, live music, ample space, it was really nice. The indoor can get pretty crowded and it felt like a frat house. :-/ Cheap beers and interesting history here.

My go to spot in Tucson! The best selection of liquor, beers, and professional mixologists in the city. Couple this with exceptional tasting events and The Congress is it. Also, the Cup Cafe has the has the best food in the downtown area. The crowd is varied and people of all ages feel welcome and comfortable in the vintage Art Deco southwestern decor. The entertainment and special events are always great. If you're there during the week, stop in and see Tiger in the Tap Room..

Love it. Saw a great concert there last night. Lighting, sound, crowd was great. Except the extremely drunk girl that spilled her drink on my foot. Worth the drive from Phoenix.

This place has diverse bars, has diverse events, and is diverse depending on the night you go. There are so many events that happen every night of the week and each bar in Congress is so unique that they should really make a separate page for each so that the reviews can be more exacting. But, since there is just this one page, here is a review of my experiences in each separate area, because really, each area has it's own unique character. Lobby Bar. This is the lounge area inside in front of Cup Cafe. This is where they make my fancy drinks. The bartenders here are always the best and they know what they are doing. I get my drinks here when I am hanging out on the patio. Also, the least noisy area inside. Tap Room. They have things on tap. I don't drink beer, so I don't get drinks in here, but I like the booths so I can sit across from the people I am with and have a conversation. However, sometimes this isn't possible, because it is almost always packed. This is also the only place where I have been accosted, and it is usually full of drunk men. They can make the basic drinks in here with gin and vodka, etc., but go to the aforementioned Lounge for whiskeys, tequilas, or anything not "well." Plaza. This is a fancy name for the patio. This is the outside where people go to talk and smoke and not be inside so they can spread out when it's crazy crowded inside. I like it here when I actually want to converse with my party or to make new friends. In general, I find people are more friendly outside, especially if you have a lighter on you. The patio outside the tap room. I have only sat here once, with my dad and I was already drunk and I had a great time. But otherwise, this area seems to be reserved for a pack of regular hipsters. I think they have a secret handshake or club or something to be able to hang out here. Temporary bars in the Plaza. These are temporary and have limited tools and drink selections and are usually served in small plastic cups. Take the extra steps and go inside for a real drink. Club Congress. I come here to dance. Here and only here, because they always have a DJ, or a band, or something to dance to at night. I usually leave other places downtown in order to come here and get my dance on. Bar in the dance area though, negative stars. They put the worst bartenders in there. This is also where Optimis night occurs on Thursdays. If you ask around, you might be lucky enough to have an Optimist card passed down to you, but otherwise, you're going to pay to get in, which is well worth it. Club Congress Bar. This is where my favorite bartender of all time is on Thursday nights. Who doesn't want an awesome roller derby babe making their dirty martini's or cranberry vodkas for them? This is obviously where I get a drink when I am dancing. They can make pretty much anything and have a few more liquor selections than the tap room, but again, specialty drinks are in the Lobby bar. Bathroom that you think is an entrance to a kitchen. Use this one. It's in the hall between the tap room and the club congress bar. I didn't know it existed until two years ago. Which makes me sad, because the bathroom down the long hall is really small and awkward and always smells.

Friday night august 23rd I decide to take my wife out to club congress which have been to thousands of times before this night I was the DD for the night, excused myself to use their very fine mens restroom next to their dj area I went in used it for about 15 seconds walked out only to be greeting by a power hungry doorman who proceeds to yell in my face that I was doing drugs in there and now I have to leave I got my wife and left. Never will I frequent this establishment again and neither should any paying customer until they fire their poorly trained staff.

I've had good times here and bad times. From have a good party night to getting pulled out and kick on the street. Good night life three bars and most of the time a live DJ. It can get crowded quickly but that's part of the fun right!

It's rare when I get a Saturday night on the town without the kiddos by my side. So when those rare opportunities arise I throw the hubby over my shoulder and head to Club Congress. Of all the clubs in town this is my favorite; great drinks, great atmosphere, great music! Oh and I heart the restaurant too!!

This is one of the places I consider a must go while in Tucson. Why, because it is super unique. I try to take everyone who comes to visit me here, at least for a drink. I feel like they really embody the spirit of Tucson with what they do. You walk in and feel like you're at an old hotel, but it is super alive. The lobby bar is packed, and Keith makes some of the best cocktails in town. Don't leave without having him whip up one of his concoctions for you. They have a scene for everyone... Lobby bar is casual and mixed crowd. Outdoors is refreshing and more social. The Tap Room Bar is hipster and funky, and the back room is clubby, live music fun. Things that hold back the five stars, sometimes they can be a bit overwhelmed and understaffed. Not a usual problem, just on really busy nights. Also, it can be a bit overly hipster at times for my taste. Love this place, go here, take friends, tell people about it. We as Tusconians should be proud to have an establishment like this in our town!

Club Congress is for sure one of Tucson's best music venues, bar none. Their bookings are so diverse that it really caters to all kinds of people and styles. I love it! Whether it's 80's night, techno night, hip-hop or a really rad local band or indy group from else where their bookings are solid and worth going to. For example, Monday nights are Retro-lution nights with a a Dj and dance music from every era, and Tuesdays they do Geeks Who Drink, Wednesdays are live music, free dance parties on Saturdays and Karaoke on Sundays. The list goes on. Plus they regularly have free entertainment out on the patio....and many of the artists are Tucson's best! It's just so awesome that we have all this incredible talent coming though our city and it's accessible. So many of their shows are free, but a $10 cover charge is nothing to complain about. Pair that awesome music with one of their cocktails and you're set! The Tap Room and the bar in the Lobby both have super quality booze from sipping tequila to Amaro and craft cocktails. You really can't go wrong.

This is definitely a Tucson landmark. The Tap Room is one of my favorite places to get a beer. The patio is great for people watching & day drinking... there is literally every type of human imaginable at this place. Good times. Best bloody mary around. I'm a big fan. I've had some pretty bad service here, that's why I'm knocking it down a star. Tap Room always treats me well. Thursday nights are hipster overload. I can't handle it.

Probably one of my favorite places to have a drink in Tucson. Drink prices are fair, especially on Thursday nights when vodka is only two dollars (used to be a dollar but whatever). The venue is always bustling with new DJ's and live performers which makes each visit a little more interesting. Karaoke on Sundays can have its good days and bad. The staff is okay, but there is a special bartender that holds a place in my drunken heart. I forget what her name is, but she serves in the inside bar across from the dance floor. The cute blondie is always cheerful, and makes very tasty drinks. The only reason why I don't up this rating to a 5 star is the amount of smelly people that have been going recently. Seriously, please go home and put that deodorant in that pocket of yours. Please.

I just absolutely love this place. Small stop over when I'm getting off the train in Tucson for a lay over. Great cocktails with excellent pricing. Great food menu and of course who could resist a beer for under $4.00.

Places like this are what downtown Tucson is all about. There's a historic, "old west" vibe that you can smell in the red velvet curtains and worn floorboards. I was here on a Saturday night for a DJ event, and was pleased to discover that there was no cover. Inside, I could sense that the dance floor was a little restrained because said DJ wasn't all that amazing, but we worked it out. Like we always do. There's even a stage you can go up on above the rest of dance floor if you're feeling a little rowdy and exhibitionist. So... I went on up and danced with a few friends and a very cute Mary Kate O. look-alike. This place is kind of a maze. There's all these adjacent connecting rooms, each with a different bar and character. I think one was the hotel lobby, with mosaic-tile floor and lots of old scary pictures of people (and was there a fountain in there?) Outside, the patio stretches the entire length of the building and is pressed up against the street. There's lots of strung lights amongst the trees and the neon glow of the big vertical letter "Congress" sign looms above. At the bar I was ordering at, one of the bartenders was very coherent and pleasant, the other one was slightly rude. "Sigh. It's just EASIER if you go to her, since she has your card." Oh. Well excuse me. Thanks for grabbing my beer out of the cooler "this one time" though. You're a doll. Next time in Tucson I'd love to hit this place up, as the event calendar looks really extensive and if you use the bathroom, the guy in the next urinal over will inform you on which shows can't possibly be missed.

This is sort of a weird review to write about the club, because it's actually about the bar in the lobby, but there are so many darn pages for Congress already, this seems to make the most sense! (As opposed to creating another page called, "bar in the lobby that's part of the club next to the restaurant." And I also think customer service would be really displeased if I created that page ;).) So here is how it went down. Brother was in town, we were looking for something fun to do, and this Anti-Valentine's Day cocktail tasting sounded really good. Little did we know it was going to be really popular, and not staffed with nearly enough people. Long story short after we paid for our tickets and realized the line was redic. we went to the bar in the lobby and asked if we could purchase drinks there for the value of our ticket to the tasting. No problemo! The bartender called the restaurant manager over and after a few clicks on a touch screen register thang we were sipping malbec. (PS, I had no idea my brother and I drank the same red). I was really impressed with the speed and efficiency in making the swith-a-roo happen. Another reason I love the locals. They're willing to help you out if they can. And it was a great glass of malbec! Know Before You Go: The lobby area is a really cool place to throw back a bevie, but get there early, because drunkards from the club spill out like stomachs crammed into jeans that don't fit, and later in the evening it's hard to find a seat.

I find myself here often. Living downtown helps a little. Its a nice place to visit if you're new to Tucson too. The hotel and bar have been around for years and you will feel it when you walk in. It is very well preserved so don't let it's age defer you. It has so much charm and character between the ambiance and the customers. Great concerts and events are here often so be sure to check out their calendar.

While I was waiting for a few of my friends in the lobby, I spotted an older dude in a crimson velvety suit, and on his arm, a woman decked out in white furs and hair garb. Did I mention he also had a glamorous cane and a fedora? Where was this pimps and hos party? I find out later that it was actually a fundraiser in the hotel, and after glancing at more people, the theme seemed to be more of the Roaring Twenties, rather than slapping asses, but it definitely set the tone for a pretty lovely evening. And then I get to the actual venue, and how kickass is it? Very. Really, it kicks a lot of ass. Besides the fact that it's totally historical and, you know, gorgeous (not to mention home to pimps and err...flapper girls), the venue works on so many levels for live music. It's super intimate, and is a good place to see a small show. Bar in the back, tables to the side for those who just want to enjoy good music, and even a few plasma-screens up high for people who get stuck in the back for full shows. Good air circulation! Yippee! Oh, and it was very easy and comfortable to get right up to the stage. So much so that I would say I was victimized. Let's just say there was a lot of spit and sweat involved.... I hope I get to see many more shows here.

One of the places you just end up because it's Tucson and it's damn boring here. Sometimes the music is good, sometimes it sucks. There are more hipsters there than one could begin to shake a stick at.

I've been coming to Congress fairly regularly since moving here 6 years ago. During that time, the place has changed only a bit, mainly in the way the stage area is laid out. I usually come for shows, but sometimes come while out on the town or to hang out at the lobby bar. There are technically four bars at Congress: the main, club bar, a side bar in the club area that I've never seen open, the "Tap Room" bar, which is the only one at which you can get draft beer, and the "Lobby Bar," which, in my opinion, is the most comfortable, and actually outside of the club. There's also a fifth bar inside of The Cup, which is the hotel's restaurant, but it's more used to prepare drinks for the restaurant than an actual bar, as there aren't any stools. There are some annoying things about the way Congress has things set up. First off, if you want to go to the Tap Room, you cannot enter from the hotel side when there's a show going on without paying the cover for the show. You can sometimes enter from outside, but they often also block that off, leaving you with just the lobby bar. If you want to pay the cover just to hang out, you sometimes cannot, because the show will sell out. Then, at shows, there's the "net" situation. Clubs in Arizona have started putting up these net sort of things at all-ages shows, separating the 21+ area from the all-ages area. Originally they put the net toward the back so that, if you wanted to drink, you could not stand by the stage, and it was actually more comfortable being in the all-ages area. Recently, the all-ages area has been reduced to a sliver on the left side of the club. Performers from out of town almost always make fun of this net, and I think it's stupid. Congress' shows are normally 21+ though. Then there are the speakers. If you stand right at the front of the stage, then you're actually in front of the speakers, which means that you're listening to what the bands are: monitors and amps. If a band chooses to not use the monitors in lieu of, say, wireless earpieces (happens sometimes), then you cannot hear anything. It sucks, and I've always thought it was stupid to have set the place up that way. There's also this funny issue with the club itself and its emergency exits, which are lined up on the wall facing outside. When it's crowded, and people are pushed up against the walls, someone almost always accidentally bumps into the door and causes the alarm to go off, which usually lasts a good 10 minutes. And, in that same crowded environment, you'll usually get people just going out these doors when the show's over, which still sets off the alarm. My other gripe is that, here, the bouncers are just jerks. The past few times I've come here, one of them, somewhere, always has to have an attitude. If you're over 21, a paying customer, and not doing anything wrong, then why is there a need to get hassled? I've never understood that. And, mainly because of that, I don't come here just to drink very often. I'll usually choose Plush, the Surly Wench or even The District over Congress. Sitting in the lobby bar is nice though. If you're meeting a friend or two, and just want a nice, quiet drink to sit down with, then this is the place where you should be. I usually recommend the lobby bar to out-of-towners, because it's the only bar where you can soak up the real ambiance of the hotel and you're fairly safe from being hassled by the bouncers. If it wasn't there, then Congress wouldn't have much to go on. They do serve a happy hour M-F in the lobby bar. The food is cooked at the adjacent restaurant, but you can't sit in there to eat it (awesome, right?). It's cheap and pretty good. There are also drink specials during this happy hour, but nothing spectacular.

At the date of this post Club Congress is by far Arizona's best music venue. It just is, bar none. It's small and they book GREAT national touring acts on a fairly regular basis (esp considering it's in Tucson). Rooms upstairs, a side bar, and cafe all connected by the hotel lobby ... I mean seriously ... super cool. Hell, if this place were in a larger city it would be one of the best places to see a show in the country (IMHO). Viva La Club Congress!

Only after leaving Tucson do I really appreciate this place. They put on great concerts, dance nights, and other events. My senior year at UA was full of great times here that I'll never forget. It's the kind of bar where you can bring any of your friends and they'll feel comfortable. Drinks are fairly cheap (especially during happy hours). If you've never been here during the day, go grab a beer and sandwich on a lazy Sunday afternoon for a truly different side of Congress.

Ive been going to Congo since the early 90s so I may be a bit biased in agreeing with other reviews that the place as a whole has seen better days. I'm not referring to the music or the now casual dressed down crowds. It just seems the dance floor could use a redo, the cracks & grooves are almost treacherous. The bartenders, while skilled just don't seem to be as engaged as eras past. The Tap seems a skeleton/ghost of what it once was. The sound system is fine as wine and the bouncers sure arent the renegades they once were.(which was part of the entertainment, actually) The djs are definitely of a vibrant energy & the outdoor addition is a big plus. I dont know, i guess its just lost its Top of the Pops, Leader of the Pack attitude and swagger. Havent seen as many cutting edge shows as years before as well. It just doesn't seem to be a destination, meeting place for as many peers or of many social cross sections that i'm associated with; and believe me, that's a wide cross section I deal with! lol

The stomosphere here was awesome! First thing I loved about Club Congress was the outdoor dance floor! I'm not a club person because of the fact that I hate the crazy sweaty crowds. However, having the dance floor outside gave good air to dance as crazy as you wanted and not feel like your suffocating in a little humid room. They have couches inside as well as little tables to sit at. Outside they also have little couches and heating lamps in case your NOT dancing and your cold. the Dj was playing very good music though so it was quite impossible to stand still! The drinks are resonably priced with very nice attentive bartenders. I give this place a thumbs up and I will for sure be returning!

I saw Los Campesinos! here, and it seems to be a great venue. Located inside the historic Hotel Congress, this is a great place to see a band. The lights and drapes in and around the stage contribute to the atmosphere. It is a little small, but it is larger than Plush. I suspect that if the place is packed, it would be hard to see the performers, especially for short people like me, but what can you do. The beer selection is good, but they only have bottles and cans. They also have free water in coolers, which is a plus.

Wow.... my first 5 star review. I'm sure some of that has to do with the fact that I pretty much grew up at Congress. It is quite possibly the ONLY thing I miss about Tucson. (okay, other than some of my fam. that hasn't wised up enough to get the hell out of there yet) I started coming here when I was 19 (fake ID in hand... ahem) with my then 21 yr. old brother (bastard) and it was my Saturday night staple from that point forward. Back when Spyder Rhodes used to spin actual records *gasp* Some of the best techno, trance and progressive house of the time and I am happy that I was a part of it. (I'm also happy I survived it) ;) After the end of that era I continued my love affair with Congress in many other ways. Some great local talent has played there as well as some bigger names. I've stayed in the hotel on multiple occasions and it's always been a blast. Even after I moved to Phoenix I had an annual "day of the dead" party (of my own personal creation) in room 241 right over the club, during and after the parade of the same name. After writing this I think I need to bring that little tradition back. It is coming up you know. I miss this little piece of my history more than most things in the dust bowl known as Tucson. I think the genuine love oozing from my words says it all. Oh hell, I'm going to call and make reservations tomorrow.

LOVE! Thursdays are dollar vodka. I go and sit on the patio and hang out with my friends, and then we can dance the rest of the night away. The crowd is diverse and its a good time!

Club Congress is a fun environment you get a little bit of everything while you are there. I find it enjoyable they usually have live music instead of house music (Techno) . The drinks are pretty reasonable and I have a great time there plus they have a coat check which is nice when the weather gets a little chilly at night. Club Congress is a fun nightlife environment , and the service is usually prompt (better then most bars). I like this place on Friday and Saturday nights.

Don't know what to say about this place. I'd heard good things from a friend, and thought it would be worth checking out. Alas, I didn't make it past the bouncer. You see, my driver's license, issued by the State of Oregon and perfectly valid for all sorts of purposes like driving, boarding planes, and drinking in several western states, has a renewal sticker on it. Said bouncer proceeded to inform me that my driver's license was expired (because the expiration date underneath the sticker has come and gone), and therefore he couldn't let me in. So we left. The kicker? Even though it was St. Patrick's Day, the band had cancelled and the place was practically empty. Geez.

Best Bar in the world? Maybe! This place has it all. Talk to a stranger, tip your bartender, try the cup cafe, or even stay the night. I LOVE this place, too bad more places haven't taken note and kept it real the way that the Hotel Congress has always managed to do. Many huge bands or up and comers will stop by and play on their way to the top and back. I've seen more than a life times worth of amazing shows here. The local bands that play here also tend to be awesome.

I used to live in Tucson and Club Congress was one of my favorite haunts. I am familiar with the bartenders, DJs, and I like knowing that I can see great "underground" bands play here for moderate prices. I visited again and decided to hit up the club for 80s night on Monday. The bartenders at Congress are personable and rarely give a weak drink. I've never been stiffed on booze and I often get discounted drinks, but I tip really well, so that could be a factor in my service. The DJs (when they are permitted to spin) are fantastic with requests, lovely to chat with, and are great at mixing. I very rarely complain about weird stops and starts where they are concerned. My one complaint about this place is specifically related to 80s night...that cover band, The Mockingbirds, has GOT TO GO. Fact number one: dressing like Adam Ant does not make it a-o-fucking-k to speak in a really awful British accent. You're from Tucson, kid. I'm familiar with your reputation and your friends, don't try to be a UK rock star, just play the fucking songs. Fact number two: You all are completely awful at banter. You have nothing witty to say so, again, just play the fucking songs. Brit-wannabe, just because you can say "alright" in a fairly decent British accent doesn't mean you need to throw it into every sentence. Fact number three: Maybe if you treated the DJs with respect and didn't run over their sets, they wouldn't duplicate the songs on your set list. You know, if you're nice to the natives, people won't already be sick of the songs you're playing because they won't have already danced to them. Fact number four: Chick, you're cute and all, but if you insist on banter, try to talk about more than boys and drinking. It doesn't reflect well on any woman in the club if the most vocal one is playing the part of vapid tart. The band really bothered me.

This is definitely a destination spot if you are going out for the night! Great ambiance-- there's the main club - then meander in the lobby to lounge around and mingle or when its all said and done- stay in a room and have breakfast in their award winning restaurant! Great times :-)

No matter where my night starts out, I generally end up here. Is it that good? Well, take it from a professional alcoholic---a resounding yes. Any time of the day, and in any part of the hotel, be it the Tap Room, the lobby, the Cup Cafe, you are guaranteed to be served a great drink. If you tip well, and treat your bartenders with respect(just like any bar! what a shocker!), they will not only remember your name, but what you like to drink. There is a reason I'll be there tomorrow afternoon, and the next day, and the next day....

This place just about sums up my college experience. Cool, a little dirty, mostly drunken, lots of good music and a bit of casual sex thrown in. I frequented this place twice a week for 5 years, at least 3 of them with a terrible fake id that they confiscated 6 months before my real 21st birthday that really sucked as I watched my friends party without me. Saw great shows there, made new friends and boyfriends, and even stayed at Hotel Congress once for fun. LOVE Club Congress, as Tucson as it gets!

The atmosphere at Club Congress is awesome, very nice historic architecture. I try to make a monthly trip down to Tucson just to enjoy it and a few other places. They also make a wonderful Bloody Mary. But, the employees there are total assholes. A few months ago I went down to Tucson with 4 friends. We first went to District Tavern which has a very nice, chill environment. After a COUPLE drinks we decided to go to Club Congress and get our evening started. But we were turned away by the rude door man. Saying one of my friends in the group was " too intoxicated to enter". We explained we had all only consumed a couple drinks. And tried to compromise saying we would sit in the lounge and our friend who was " too intoxicated" would only drink water. They basically booted us out the door. FINE! Congress has jerk-y door men. The atmosphere still makes up for it. So, I went back a few weeks. With a few friends again. We had all just eaten at Cup Cafe ( the restaurant at Hotel Congress) and had a drink or two. We go to head into Club Congress. My Boyfriend and I enter first. He is told he cant bring his small messenger bag but I CAN bring my purse. We argue and say that is sexist and that they can check his bag and take a look inside it. They said it was policy and that he could check it at the front desk for a small fee. I said that bull shit! grabbed the bag right infront the door men and stuffed it in my purse. A couple minutes later my other friends proceed to enter, and the door man claims my friends ID IS FAKE. And we tried to fight it, asked to talk to manager. Basically all got booted out again. The door men at Club Congress are on a Power Trip. And I have a feeling many are also homophobic ( my friend who got told he was too intoxicated is gay). Congress- atmosphere is great, food is yummy ( Cup Cafe), makes good drinks, Hotel can be a fun experience. BUT DOORMEN are awful. FYI. I give it an A-OK. But it would be 5 stars if they improved there employees.

It's got great ambiance and you can always find a diverse crowd there. The theme nights are fun during the week. This is one of the best places to be Monday nights in Tucson. The line at the bar can get pretty deep, but don't worry - the drink prices will make up for it. It's also a great spot to check out a local band.

used to be great. we used to stay here when visiting Tucson before we moved here. HoCo has lost much of it's charm & many of it's charming staff. not very high on my list of places to hit when out having drinks, sadly.

Club Congress -- how I love thee. Stage is great. Drinks are cheap. People are usually ok. The lobby is beautiful. Nice artwork. Cool stage. That being said, BEWARE THE SMOKING PEN! Club Congress was a great place for shows in Tucson. What I enjoyed even more was the best 80s night in the country. Monday nights were my favorite. Classic 80s flicks on the big screen, best mix of 80s club favorites, oh and 80 cent well vodka drinks. Tuesday mornings were never pleasant. If you ever get the chance, check out hotel congress. It's a cool hangout with bars stashed in the lobby, on stage, and in the tap room. Be sure to check it out!

I'm glad I didn't pay for you because your DJ sucked. And some guy was playing tetris on the wall. I felt like I was in a little kids rave den. Should have had some glowsticks. I'm pretty psyched the beer was only $4 and that I didn't have to pay cover. You know what was better though, the party in the ball room that we crashed. Milly's birthday party. Yeah, Milly's DJ friends were better than you. I really would have liked to hear some progressive house or something but I settled for Michael Jackson's Billy Jean and free cake. Milly was 26. It was nice of her to let us into her party.

Certainly a happening place compared to other clubs and bars I visited. Great 80's band. I went on 80's night. I had a good time. There were a variety of ages. Not a lot of diversity though. Drinks were high priced as one might guess. It wasn't too loud, which was another plus.

best bar ever. i live in phoenix now and miss club congress and plush so bad. all the people who can't wait to get out of tucson, should know that the grass is so not greener on the other side. i would kill for a bar that had a mixture of ultra-cheap strong drinks, great theme nights with dance parties, the best music, the best people, and general awesomeness. you can have more fun there in one monday or thursday night then in months in other cities and not feel guilty at all because of the low prices. monday 80s nights there are the best with 80 cent drinks until 11 pm or midnight. then its the optimist club on thursdays with dollar vodka drinks and 2 dollar gin drinks until midnight and a indie dance party. there is a main dance/performance area, a tap room, a lobby with a bar, and a patio so you can be as wild or as chill whenever you want. but any day you go there will be a ton of friendly people and places to chill. there is a really great fellowship amongst the people that go there, plush, and che's that make it a lot of fun. they also host a lot of good indie bands there but it isn't my favorite place to see a concert in tucson, especially when they allow people under 21 in. when that happens, they put up a net by the back of the bar where drinkers have to stay reminiscent of the clubhouse in phoenix, aka the worst music venue ever. but i still have seen some amazing shows there by bands like tv on the radio and of montreal. the best show ever was by trail of the dead, just before worlds apart came out. it was the most impressive display of drunken musicianship i have ever seen. they played for 2 hours, completely wasted, until the club shut the power to the stage and they played an a capella cover of simon and garfunkel's cecilia. incredible.

This place is nostalgic and full of good vibes and people. The hotel has a lot of full bars inside it, and it seems like every hallway in the joint leads to a bar. The venue inside is a great place to see bands, The venues is capable of shows of any magnitude, and the sound is clear and powerful. The walls of the hotel are decorated with all kinds of historic memorabilia like John Dillinger stuff (since he and his gang were indicted here) as well as western and local town history. There is a big ass ouija board coffee table in the lobby adding to the haunting but hip atmosphere. The congress is a staple location for the local bar & music scene, and there is a bar here for every type of crowd.

I probably have a bit of a bias on Club Congress because I experienced perhaps the best night of my life there. After enjoying the New Pornographers/Dodos concert at the Rialto, I met a few friends and swung over to Congress. Surprise, surprise, there were the members of both bands enjoying a drink! Better yet, they invited us to drink with them. Long story short, we ended up getting to know the groups pretty well - my own little starstruck moment. Barring the great time that summer night, this is a fun club. The bartenders are freaking fantastic. Seriously. Everyone there is so much fun, the remember the regulars, and always make my drink perfect. I'm a bit of a lightweight, but they make mine nice and strong without being unbearable. Even better, the drinks are dirt cheap. Seriously, I challenge you to find a $3 mixed drink in Baltimore, DC, or New York. There is so much room and so many different people here! I usually hang out on the patio or near the back bar, but I've seen a concert there and sat in the lobby once. Live music is always fun and the djs they have are pretty quality. I haven't ventured into the actual hotel, though. Ghosts freak me out. The events that Congress hosts are also tons of fun. I was a part of HoCo and really enjoyed myself. This is a little peace of Tucson history that still kicks butt. I highly recommend!

Like any evening spot, the night you go will make all the difference. I like the atmosphere of Optimist Club nights on Thurs, and there's usually a good dj inside, and plenty of space to mingle inside the lobby or on the patio. Fri and Sat nights are fun also, although a lot of times we have to be the first ones to dance to get the place jumping, as a lot of people like to just stand around the dance floor or mean mug. But once the dancing starts, the combination of electronic and dub step keeps it fresh. Used to go to Retro night on Monday's, but the crowd got smaller and the music was rather limited hearing the same stuff each time, so don't know how it is now

Ahhh lots of fond memories of this place. The tap room inside has great selections of liquor. The club itself has different styles of music nightly; whether it's 80s night on Monday or Bang Bang on Saturday. This place has a lot of options. Plus, the patio is a great place to just hang out with large groups.

Oh, Club Congress, the memories are countless. I'm a Tucson native. Anyone who's anyone knows about Club Congress. Music venue, bar, expanded outside patio, there's not much not to like about this place. Depending on the event, this place might have a cover. Thursday night was always my favorite night for Club Congress - Optimist night. I was lucky enough to have had an Optimist card passed down to me, but if you don't have one of those handy babies, you're going to pay to get in. Good music, dancing, good people, and a great history - if you haven't ventured to this place, do it.

  • Sarah S.

Ok they have cheap drinks and a good atmosphere, but there's 2 problems for me. One, depending on the bar you go to, you could be waiting all night. Me and my friends waited 20 minuets for the shots we ordered, before we just went to the other bar. The girl making drinks seemed busy, but she also stopped to talk to her friends atleaste 3 times. I wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, but come on that's her work not her social time. Secondly for a place that boasts a wide variety of classic drinks, they can't even make a Harvey wall banger. This is my favorite drink, and it's an oldie so I figured if any bar could make it Congress could. I was wrong. They don't have Galliano, and even if they did I doubt they could pull it off. Very disappointing. Overall this is a nice place for cheap drinks and a good story, but its not the best in town.

Club Congress and the general Hotel Congress area, is a place where I, like many Tucsonans, end up in quite a bit. It's a classic "Tucson" spot to meet friends, take in live music, get drinks, grab a bite (though the menu at Cup Cafe has been hit or miss in my experience), etc. Though I genuinely always have a great time there thanks to the company I'm surrounded by, that will not stop me from saying that this place has the worst customer service in town. The staff and management is, for the most part: rude, unappreciative and down right snobby. Sure, there are a few exceptions (bartenders and servers). And sure, HoCo has overall guaranteed business, but that doesn't mean they can act like they're above their customer base and trust me, it takes nothing or very little to get them there. While I may never want to avoid the place altogether, I still think I deserve better. I'm not asking for much, a little common courtesy from them would go a long way, in my opinion.

So many good memories, and the experiences just keep getting better! Some of the reasons I've been to Club Congress over the last 10 years: 80s night, Harry and the Potters, Tetris during Optimist Club, Andy Dick, Dillinger Days, and just to dance Dance DANCE! After my recent experience at the bar outside the club (awesome Manhattan), I am reminded that I need to spend more time at CC.

This historic landmark of Downtown culture really makes you appreciate the little things in Tucson, like the fact we have historically been a place for badasses to come and drink the night away. Today we try to live up to these exacting standards but entering the summer months we have lost a bit of something in terms of quantity of attendants. The drinks are priced okay, i stick with Pale Ale $4 on tap. It could be better with the drink specials but hey. This place is cross dressing a dive bar with a patio chic palace. The bouncers for the most part are cool, but you know the douch bag(s) im talking about that have worked there far too long. I wont point fingers. This place is good, but not great. It is the only option for the late night crowed, and we come to it not because it offers us something new, but because its the only thing there is. I hope that we can have some kind of friendly competition of bars once the underpass is fixed. Retarded Contractors. In any case you'll find me there Thursdays for the Optimists club, maybe one day they will have a dj that doesn't suffer from tourettes. (bad transitions, crazy followups, dysjunked audio) Good for bands. Space is limited in what it can host, but hey where there's a will. But WIll left town long ago. The cut out, back lit steel look also works really well. Appreciable at night and when drunk, so really anytime your there.

Club Congress, Hotel Congress, The CUP, the Tap Room these are some of my favorite things. This little hub of fabulous venues is the original downtown hot spot and it continues to impress me. The owners really care about Tucson and particularly about the development of Downtown Tucson. I just love this place, it's central to my downtown experience. I met several Tucson friends there this time out and the food was great. The cocktails are unbearably sweet but the calamari in fresh tomato sauce made up for it. That's one of the best calamari I have ever had.

Yes, I lika da Club Congress lol. We went on a night where they were playing musical jeopardy which was quite entertaining. Everyone was carrying on enjoying their libations and playing. There is a nice outdoor patio where you can sit and people watch or you can hang out inside at the bar and watch people watching you. Recommended for just kicking back and relaxing. Enjoy yourself!

I loved this place...small and intimate. Saw a great acoustic set with Colin Hay, and was overwhelmed by emotion, which was due to how intimate the place felt. Although I was rather cool, I have heard that they don't have air conditioning, so be aware of this if you go in the summer. Also, plan on having dinner at the Cup Cafe in the Hotel. The food, atmosphere and service were fantastic. The outside seating was also a plus. Don't bother hanging out in the Tap Room too long...or be sure to sit outside. The Tap Room itself is a dive, and the bartendar on Wednesday night didn't seem to know much. Stick with the three other bars inside the venue, which have much more ambience.

Some of my best memories have taken place here. These have included the following shows: The Cramps; L7; Dick Dale; numerous Christmas breakfasts and lunches with dear friends. The food at the Cup Cafe is tasty, well presented and reasonably priced. As a venue, it's intimate yet large enough to put on larger club shows. Taken as a whole- Hotel Congress is a valuable part of the Tucson Community.

The First Annual Beer Cup of Tucson AZ. Was Great !! The 7 Local Brewery's of Tucson brought 2 beers that they brewed. Barrio, Borderlands, Nimbus,1702,Electric ,Dragoon, Thunder Canyon. I thought they all did a Great Job! The Event sold out and Hotel Congress did a Great Job! They had music outside , the event was outside it was a super nice night. We voted on the best overall beer and the best specialty beer. I believe Dragoon Brewery won 1st place for best overall and I think Borderlands won best specialty beer but not 100% sure ??? The only thing I think Hotel Congress could have improved on was that there were to be complimentary appetizer's.we got there when it started and they had already ran out : ( they did have food to purchase but I would have preferred a light snack that they had advertised, but overall Good Job Hotel Congress ; )

We enjoyed a large group of fans during a music festival at Hotel Congress. While there was a stage set up outside our favorite shows were at Club Congress. It's an intimate venue where you can actually rotate between front stage and the bar without much effort during a show. I've been to a lot of concerts and have never really seen a venue where you can do that. If a band you like will be performing here I most certainly do recommend Club Congress for an enjoyable concert venue.

Club Congress is a historic building in downtown Tucson...A hotel, restaurant, and club. The nightlife aspect of the hotel has been hip since before downtown was the place to be. A hipster music venue/dance club/place to grab drinks... CC has recently gained mass popularity among UofA folk and t-locs alike, great for the business however I feel it takes away from the creative artsy vibe this place previously always had going on... However, I still enjoy coming here for a fun evening of fun with friends while visiting Tucson. From the club aspect, to the "lobby" area where you can go for quieter, more casual fun, this place definitely has a lot to offer.

Arguably a busy night with Zombie Walk. But we waited 15 and not the 5 advertised minutes. Then it took a good 25 minutes to get our drink orders. Oh and next time ill take my water with out the wilted piece of lettuce in it. I've been here other times where I was wowed and it was a great experience, so I look forward to a better follow up in the future!!

I have only been to Club Congress on Saturday nights for Bang Bang. I hear Thursday's Optimists Club is a good night, but I have a professional job to be at early in the am, so sadly, I cannot partake. Bang Bang is by far my favorite place to be for fresh house music. The sound system is always tuned just right for the hard bass. The DJ's keep it funky and new, even when playing vintage tracks. I deeply appreciate and respect this place based on the music. The bartenders in the main room have always been super great, and I love the $2 Session beer. The TapRoom isn't my favorite bar area, I get awful service, since I'm not a "regular" I suppose. A minor inconvenience lies in the doorman. I know it's an important job, I get it. I am constantly harassed for my ID, but now I bring my passport, which in and of itself is ridiculous. But it works. My major beef with this joint tends to be the crowd. I come here to hear good music and be around my team of friends. Yes, I dress up a little bit when I go out on Saturday night. I do my hair, I put on makeup. So do my friends. Sorry if that upsets some of the unwashed masses that think they own the place. I just want to have a good time, and I'd like to meet new people, so maybe be a little more open to "outsiders" (as I've been referred to there). Again, love the music, love the space, love the outdoor patio. Some of the best people watching in town, I've met some great people there, reconnected with old friends, and gotten to know new friends better there.

I absolutely love Club Congress. Showing up late to Club Congress is your best bet.. early in the night the place is dead. It also pays to check their website for whats going on that night. Last I checked Sundays were Karaoke, and Mondays 80's night. The best night to go is Saturday nights Bang Bang!. Great music, awesome crowd, good drink specials (last time I went it was half price shots of patron.. yum). They often have guest djs and the house dj will take requests. The best dance floor in tucson says me. My friends and I will slip away to the tap room bar for a rest throughout the night. There is also an outside patio. Its def my favorite place to go on congress.

The Tap Room is one of my favorite bars in the world. This is a Tucson staple and should be experienced by everyone at some point. The bartenders here are always nice, helpful and eager to pour your drinks if you become a regular. It can get crowded late in the night, so unless you're willing to eblow for drinks, I recommend hitting it earlier (8:00 - 11:00 pm). Check schedules as there are many great local/regional/touring bands that play here inside and outside.

Our after party for Tucson Roller Derby's Dust Devil Tournament was here. We hosted girls from as far away as Australia! While waiting for the main area to open to us, customer service in the bar, cafe, and lobby area was wonderful. We were treated like royalty and were able to show our guests a great Tucson establishment and a fun time.

I saw Japanese post-rock band Mono perform here while buzzing from the best Stoli Around the Worlds I've ever had, served up by a swank Australian bartender who was very friendly and quite aware that she was the sh*t. Truly an awesome night. Just being in the historic Hotel Congress is an experience. Dimly lit and kinda creepy -- it's got so much atmosphere that it's hard not to be excited for a show here. I've never been here for the actual "club" aspect, but as a venue for bands coming through, there are few venues in AZ that I'd rather a band choose than this. Probably deserves 4 stars, but I'm a sucker for swagger, and the bartender had that in spades, so 5 it is.

Staple in the downtown renaissance. Absolutely the most fun bar in town, don't miss it. Area includes an indoor club, huge patio with seating, lounge area, and two long bars (each of the above with its own respective bar). Chill vibe, very rarely does anyone have an attitude. Thursday nights are the best, but check it out any day of the week for a good time.

Club Congress is one of my favorite places to go. I don't think I've ever had a bad time there, The place has had the same vibe since I first walked through the doors. It's charming, cool and completely accessible to anyone. Live shows are a blast and the DJ's usually do a decent job. The drinks are cheap and the bartenders rock. Who wouldn't want to buy a drink from an ass-kicking Derby girl? Communists, that's who. My only beef with Congress is the inevitable smelly hippie. Without fail the smelly hippie will appear just as the place starts heating up. The vacant stare and the rancid odor the calling cards of this typical downtown dweller. All you can do is go with it (and hold your breath) For you smokers there is an excellent patio, with a much larger section that gets opened up for events. Congress defines the Tucson that I know and love.

Club Congress, the Cup Cafe, the Taproom... . This place is a wonderful staple to Tucson's beleaguered downtown. They get some great shows here and host lots of special events. If you want in-depth reviews of the whole package, search for "Hotel Congress". Or better yet, just head down there yourself!

Came here to see Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. I'd been here one time before in the 90's and it looks like the layout had changed somewhat. Parked a few blocks away because the street it is on was sort of blocked off. People working the "door" were pretty cool and friendly. There is a bar on one side if you just want to drink and another bar with a stage area on the other. Some bouncer dude makes sure to check that you are wearing the band showing you paid before letting you go to the live music part. Unfortunately the bar in the live music area is very limited so you have to go to the other bar, get what you want, and walk back to the live area. It seems a good place to see a show as long as it isn't too packed. There are a few tables if you want to sit and drink while watching. The rest is empty floor space so you can mosh/headbang/pogo/or whatever wild body movement to the music you can come up with.

I have been going to club congress since I turned 21....let me say this review has taken me a decade. The atmosphere is great, if you go; only go on a Monday, it is the only time you will get local regulars in. The staff is great other than the security guards who sometimes step over their bounds. Get ready to dance and have great drink specials....enjoy!!!!

This place is a must stop when friends and family are in town. Some drinks can get pricy but always something affordable for those on a budget. Great meeting spot and open late. Often has music. Always worth popping in, even for a quickie.Restaurant can be hit or miss, maybe start with something priced right.Breakfast can be a good stop too.

Club Congress hosts great bands at (usually) low prices. Their drinks are good and the bartenders are friendly. The age groups vary from underage (doors close later to only allow 21+) to people in their 60's. If you like to relax with friends while sipping a drink and listen to music, Congress is the place to do it. Congress has a reputation for being pretentious but I have never run into anyone but down to earth and jovial people here.

Nothing beats a night out at congress or a morning breakfast at the cup cafe. Either way you will be delighted with great cocktails and mouthwatering food! Morning, noon or night congress is where it's at!

Club Congress is definitely my favorite place out of all the bars/places to drink in downtown Tucson. There are three full bars; one in the lobby-area, another in the area where bands and DJs play, and the last in a small strip with booths (this is the bar to go for the beer on tap, also only bar in Club Congress for Guinness). The place has a very nice laid back feel to it, you can just hang out, socialize, drink and listen to some music if there is something going on. You don't have to go into the Tap Room to drink if you don't want to. There have been times where nothing good was going on so we hung out in the lobby. Though, when there is a band or a DJ playing it is well worth it. The stage is small and you can get up pretty close (standing room only). Black stage with cool white flowery/southwest kinda designs around the edges. The sound is great.

Good drinks and vibe that is somewhere between haunted and enchanting, Club Congress is a very different spot. There are three main sections to the club itself as well as the hotel above, the attached cafe, and Copper Hall; the special events area. The club is great for catching new bands, having a drink with friends, or just hiding from that never ending heat. I always enjoyed that I could get a candy bar and lounge in the historic and rumored to be haunted space. In general it is a good place to dance with an interesting blend of culture making Club Congress is one of the best places to spend time in Tucson.

I recently saw a friend perform at Club Congress, and I must say it is a great venue for live music. Being from Phoenix, where there aren't too many places like this, I envy Tucson for having a cool downtown bar that promotes local and indie artists. The stage is what sold it for me. It's like an old vaudeville stage with luscious red curtains and deliciously ornate iron lattices framing the entire stage. It is very cool! And, it is just the right size -- small enough for your lone singer/songwriter strumming his guitar, but just big enough for a full band to feel intimate with their audience. The sound system was good, there were a nice amount of tables scattered around the floor and the under 21's where conveniently corralled behind a black net. All in all, a terrific place to hear live music. I just wish one day Phoenix would take a cue from our little sister city to the South and become the big, hip city it knows it can be!

Club Congress is a really cool spot with an old school feel. The venue has this low-key, dingy, hole-in-the-wall feel (granted, I'm from LA and NY)... and that's exactly what makes it AWESOME. It's located inside the historic Hotel Congress (where John Dillinger was caught) and the crowd was definitely eclectic (all ages; different ethnic groups; very "interesting" and entertaining dance styles). I came here on 80s/90s night and the the music was bumpin'! All the great hits were playing and the whole crowd was dancing! The air conditioning was weak, so there were a lot of shiny, sweaty people, but the inexpensive drinks ($1 well drinks!) and good DJ made for a great time with new friends. Highly recommended!

Dirge-y, drab and dirty with dimwitted security who manhandle you as if you were a criminal biker, they seem to neglect the fact that unlike the DMV and unemployment office, people don't need to be there, and people have free will when it comes to deciding where to spend their money. Sadly, bands I like occasionally show up there even though I keep promising myself I will never come back. They have the most ridiculous system to regulate the movements of minors at their pathetic "all ages" shows. Gill nets? C'mon, this is a university town, it's not like nobody has ever figured out how to do it right. Also, they water down their drinks. A lot.

One of the best bars in town. I've never been let down. The bartenders really understand what they're doing, so when I order an Old Fashioned, I know i'll be getting a good old fashioned. The interior is fantasticly historic from the bars to the bathrooms. If you're there during the day, do yourself a favor and get something from Cup Cafe, next door. You can order from the bar. Note: If you don't enjoy a club-like atmosphere avoid Optimus Club on Thursday nights.

club congress is one of tucson's premiere music venues by default. it's like saying mike bibby is the blackest guy in iowa. yes, he is. but only because there are no black people in iowa. i feel like whenever i go in here that i'm going to get in the middle of some awful conversation between 2 people over who "really started independent electro rock in the uk?" and im going to find myself looking for a book of matches and a can of gas to light myself on fire and end my misery. mondays have cheap drinks though ! heyo !

This is a great place to see local and traveling bands coming thru Tucson. The crowd is always very eclectic and drunk. Bad service is almost expected but the drink prices are usually pretty cheap. The building is worth walking around just for the decor and history if your not into the partying scene. Great photo opt. above the building to remember Tucson and the bar.

Oh yeah - it's been since the early 90's since I've been to CLUB CONGRESS - during my college years - great place to see bands too. it's located inside a hotel and not very big - unless it's been remodeled ofcourse. Seen greats shows here: GAYE BYKERS ON ACID, JON SPENCER BLUES XPLOSION, GOO GOO DOLLS ( when they played way faster ) SIDEWINDERS and a good number of kick ass bands. i'm sure it's still the "cool" place to be.
