The food was good and the prices were excellent. The aesthetics could use a face lift but otherwise it is a great place to grab lunch

I've been to Bangkok Cafe and had their Pad Thai.... but Bai Thong's is by far the better one! We also had their fried rice with sweet basil and that was just as amazing. In addition, we ordered the trout with basil, ginger, and Thai sauce which was super tasteful. As for dessert, I usually order the homemade Thai tea ice cream but they were out so I had to settle for the homemade coconut ice cream. I'm not in love with coconut, but I loved it! Definitely coming back.

Having the lunch special ($6.95). Comes with soup, veg egg rolls and your choice of entree. Let me just say the soup was phenomenal I can just have a big bowl of this soup. Oh my goodness. The egg rolls are not deep fried, it seems they are put on a skillet. The taste was much better because it's cooked enough, has a crunch but yet soft. They were yummy. Now my entree!!!!!! Blew my socks off. The portions were freaken amazing. I'm a small gal, but let me tell you I eat a lot and this filled me up. You get a lot for your money. $7 bucks well spent. Thank you, will be coming back for lunch, that's for sure! I'm surprised it wasn't packed. Side note: I got the iced Thai tea, it was eh alright. I think they added too much cream. It took the tea taste out and just tasted like super sweet milk. Blah. Also, the chicken on the entree was a dark (some). I didn't eat the dark ones. I think next time I will order it with just veggies and tofu. Anyhow everything was fantastic.

I went there this evening to scope the place out before I take a dear out of state friend who wants Thai for lunch. The verdict? I'll be taking him there tomorrow. This is located in a strip mall on Speedway, but you forget that as soon as you step in the door as it feels comfortable in there. We were greeted by the young wife, who owns the restaurant and were seated. This being a Wednesday, and early in the evening (5:30 p.m.) there was only one couple and only two other parties came in while we were there. Two or three came in for pickup. So slow night. I ordered the Panang Curry and my wife and daughter ordered the Thai Curry. We also shared a plate of thin bean noodles and a chicken Satay appetizer. All was excellent! Panang Curry is a red peanut sauce curry with basil leaves (yum!), bell pepper, and meat. I had beef. Thai Curry is green curry with basil leaves (yum!), bell pepper, and bamboo shoots. Could have had just a li-i-i-ittle more bell pepper, and bamboo slices instead of shreds. But that's a minor point and will not detract from your enjoyment. We all enjoyed our tasty curry on top of our tasty rice. The bean noodles were really good. They put tomatoes, onions, scrambled eggs, and I want to say napa cabbage. The Satay was good, too, and came with four generous sizes of skewered chicken. Oh, speaking of generous portions, each serving of curry can easily feed two and still have some leftovers for lunch the next day for some lucky person. So if you're wanting to save money, split one order of curry and it only cost around $10 for the both of you. Service was super. She was very pleasant and friendly. She kept our waters filled and seemed to have an eye out for us. They accommodated my wife when she originally ordered her curry mild because she had an irritated sore throat. Her curry was still a bit too spicy and they gladly took it back to add more coconut milk in. For me, though, I'm going to order it a bit more spicy next time. The great part about going back the next day is trying something else out like the deep fried bananas or the sweet sticky rice with custard or mango. I was too full tonight to order dessert. I will tomorrow!

My Thai husband and I (not Thai) are recent transplants to Tucson and this is the third and so far best Thai restaurant we've tried here. My husband is feeling naturally a bit wary after the first two disappointments though and said that, even though both items he ordered here were quite good (Guey Teaw Neau and Keaw Narm), he doesn't want to allot a particular number of stars until he's tried a few more dishes. So the three-star rating is based on my experience only. As to that, I was mostly very pleased. I ordered the Panang curry and it was very, very good and they actually spiced it "super hot" as I requested. (VERY few Thai restaurants will serve my food "Thai hot" because they automatically assume an old, white woman has no idea what she's getting herself into. That sort of arrogance seriously pisses me off.) My one quibble is that the rice was WAY overdone and grossly mushy. I suspect that was just one of those "oops" moments that doesn't happen with any sort of regularity though.

We had the chicken pad thai noodles, green curry and papaya salad. Everything was so delicious and fragrant. Very fresh tasting ingredients. Peaceful atmosphere and good service.

Pleasantly surprised! A little hole in the wall in a strip of stores, i wasn't sure what to expect. We ordered Tom Yum, Red Curry, and Papaya salad. By far the best Papaya Salad I have had!!! Waitress was very sweet. I had asked for no bell peppers and they put them in the curry. Not seeing it as a big deal, I just picked them out and put them aside. When she noticed she was sooo apologetic. I thought that was very nice seeing how I wasn't going to say anything. She also asked if we wanted separate checks before processing the check. I appreciate that, seeing how most of the time, such a small request is often frowned upon. Great service. Great food.

If you want the best Thai food in Tucson this is it. Don't even bother going to any "Asian" resteraunt that "cooks thai". I have tried many, many Asian resteraunts in Tucson including a few other Thai restaurants and this place by far is the best. The curry, and soups are amazing. The owners are from Thailand and this is the most authentic Thai food you will find here.

The food here is phenomenal. My mom is from Thailand and this is the closest to her cooking I've been able to find in Tucson. Authentic and delicious. The service is pretty good, they are nice. But it's like going to my moms house, they seem I dunno... Shy. Maybe it's a cultural thing. Super fast service but I've never been when it's busy so that may be situational. Beef larb is my favorite!

The lunch specials are a good price and the soup of the day is always delicious. I don't think Bai Thong is quite as good as nearby Char's Thai, but it's comparable and it's always quick.

Really more of a 4.5 star Inexpensive, but good food. Portions are a good size. Service can be a bit hit or miss, but the last few times I've gone the waitresses have been pretty on top of drinks and orders. The mango and coconut sweet rice is good, but they've had ice cream lately (haven't had any so can't say, but Thai tea flavor sounds interesting). I really like this place, and I stop by for lunch all the time. Got my co-workers into it too.

My husband and I visited on a Sunday evening, hoping to quench our desire for some delicious Thai food. We had read some decent reviews, most of which stating that the food was good, but the restaurant was fairly empty for dinner. We arrived around 6:00pm to a mostly empty restaurant, with one large table of diners celebrating a birthday. We were seated promptly in a booth with some pretty pictures of Buddhist temples under the glass top table. Overall the decor was nothing special, but it was not dirty or dingy either. Our waiter was wearing street clothing (jeans and a t-shirt), but he was fairly friendly. It took a while for him to return to our table and take our drink order, but when he finally did, the beers were brought out in a timely fashion. The menu had an array of options which were listed with ingredients, so people who are unfamiliar with Thai food can know what exactly they are ordering. We started with the Tom Ka Gai (coconut chicken) soup. It was served to our table in a flaming metal bowl with a ladle. Nice touch for appearance and keeping the soup hot as well. The soup was creamy and delicious, with a touch of spiciness. Just the way we like it. I ordered the Pad Thai with beef, and my husband ordered the Massaman Curry with beef. The Pad Thai was a decent sized portion of noodles and meat, not brothy, not overly sauced, with crisp raw veggies and some chopped peanuts on top. It was good, but I felt like the flavor was missing something. My husband received his Massaman in a soup bowl, and it was very brothy. Other Massaman dishes he has eaten were not soupy. The flavor was good, but the delivery was a bit odd. A bowl of white rice was served along side of the curry. He enjoyed his dish. He had asked that it be made spicy, and assured the waiter that yes, he actually wanted it spicy (because the waiter clarified that point). It arrived spicy. Although... if you like REALLY spicy food, you may want to drive that point home to your server. I think they are probably used to catering to more "American" tastes and spice levels, and therefore they are cautious about overdoing the heat level. Overall, we had a good experience. The food was good. I would like to go back sometime and try some other dishes. But before I do, I will visit some other Thai places here in Tucson so that I have something to compare the food to.

I've tried almost every Thai restaurant in Tucson, and this is by far the best. The menu is varied and each dish has a depth of flavor that you don't find in any of the other places. The curies are rich and delicious. The rice is nice and jasmine. The thai toast is large and fresh and divine. I'm not sure why people don't flock to this place. The servers (a husband and wife team with the cutest baby you'll ever meet) are nice and helpful. The ambience is lacking, but the food really shines. This may be one of Tucson's best kept secrets.

Can't say this place was ever particularly good, but now it's really lame. They don't have fresh limes anymore. I asked the male waiter and he said they use lime juice from concentrate. Really? No way! That's like an Italian restaurant using artificial cheese. As for the green curry? Heavily watered down. I asked the waiter if they use real coconut milk. Answer: A really quick, "yeah." I'm telling you. The only reason this place gets a few good reviews is because Tucson doesn't any "good" Thai restaurants. I mean not really. In fact, dust bowl Tucson doesn't have a lot of anything "good." I mean zillions of Mexican restaurants. But "really" good ones?

My new favorite Thai place! Curry and pad Thai were both incredible! Will be back! Although the restaurant isn't the fanciest, the food makes up for it. No military discount, but lunch for two was just under $20.

This was the first time I have ever eaten at this restaurant. The staff is friendly and made amazing recommendations for us to try. We loved how quick the service was and how wonderful the food was. They even gave us the option of making our food mild as opposed to the usual Thai spicy. Amazing work and I hope go there again soon :)

This is my favorite Thai place in Tucson so far. Of course, there aren't many Thai places, but that's a rant for another time. I come here fairly regularly, a few times each month. As Monica noted, it's surprising that this place isn't more packed because it's really quite good. Now, I've never been to Thailand, nor am I Thai so I'm just going on personal preference here. We usually get chicken satay, tom yum soup, and summer rolls as starters. Sometimes, that's all we get if we're not very hungry! Curry dishes as consistently good, and I've enjoyed most other entrees I've tried. I haven't encountered anything bad, maybe only a dish or two I didn't love and wouldn't order again, but never a bad experience. Even the entrees that are not in the vegetarian section can usually have a sub of the meat for tofu. Very friendly staff. The one thing I can say I really don't like is that sodas are served in cans, because I prefer fountain drinks with unlimited refills. ;-) If your food isn't spicy enough, be sure to ask for the spice rack so you can kick it up to your own preference.

ERHHH i hope this really isn't the best thai in town like reviews claim because if it is i'll have to skip on thai while i'm in tucson! last minute decision to come here when we first got into Tucson.. the place was pretty empty except one other couple not the nicest looking restaurant but sometimes that means more authentic so we were all for it! ---pad zee eew: flavor was good but noodles were soggy & way overcooked ---kang karee (yellow curry): nothing special.. came with white rice that was also overcooked & mushy ---panang seafood: seafood wasn't all that fresh, tasted like frozen seafood, but the flavor of this dish was good i'm sorry i'm not a fan of the food here but the guy working the place was really nice!

We placed a to go order from Bai Thong several weeks ago. Both of us ordered Pad Thai. I ordered hot and my husband got Thai Spicy. Though we love thai spices, we both found that the spice was a little too much in this case. When we dined in this evening, we had mild and hot respectively. The mild had no kick at all but still excellent flavor. I will for sure be ordering medium next time. Every bite is delicious and flavorful. I highly recommend adding extra peanuts! What was also very impressive was when I had a problem with my order, they graciously remade my food very very quickly. Server was knowledgeable and quick to respond. This is definitely now our regular Thai place!!!

I couldn't quite understand why this place was so barren. Arriving for dinner in the middle of the week, the place is deserted. And by the time we left, only two other seats have been filled. That sort of thing always makes me nervous. But I so enjoyed this little spot! They have about 18 tables and could very easily seat large groups of people. Nothing fancy or flashy. Modest digs, but delicious eats. This seems like the perfect spot for a casual lunch or for a casual dinner with family, friends or your volunteer group. The service is prompt and attentive. We ordered the tofu spring rolls and fried canapés to share. I went with the duck Curry and my friend ordered a beef and mushroom entrée. Prices are very reasonable. Most of the entrées fell somewhere between $7 and $9. Portions were hefty. We had enough for leftovers. I absolutely loved my duck curry. And I thoroughly enjoyed my friends entrée as well. Both had such deep and smooth flavors - a perfect marriage of spices and heat.

I was craving Thai so bad, and after 15 minutes of Yelping around I found Bai Thong. We drive up to the business and to be honest there was only two other patrons and what it looked to be the kid of the owners. My boyfriend and I looked at each other and I said to him " wouldn't be the first time we had a bad meal". So we got off and the server was very nice although there was a bit of a language barrier. We like to start out with an appetizer and considering the reviews we wanted to play it safe and decided togo for the spring rolls (I mean can you really mess that up?) and they didn't! It did have tofu which we were a bit skeptical about but it was very well done they paired it with a cucumber dressing and it just went perfect. We then had three dishes: 1) We started with the coconut milk and lime juice soup with mushrooms and chicken, and let me just say it was DELICIOUS!! We couldn't have enough of it. It's a pretty big portion for two so I definitely think it could feed up to 5 people. 2) Again we didn't want to mess around so we went for the safe option of a shrimp pad Thai, and again DELICIOUS. 3) Finally we had the curry which was great, but to be honest after that amazing soup the curry didn't compare but it wasn't bad at all. Our favorite was definitely the soup. Can't wait to go back. This place doesn't get too busy form the looks of it but it has quite a bit of seating Decor could be updated for warmth as its a pretty big place. But other than that FOOD WAS AMAZING. Oh and obviously I had a Thai tea. My boyfriend who usually opts out because they're too sweet anywhere else we've gone actually ended up ordering one for himself. Score Bai Thong!

Good choice for a Friday night when everything else is crowded because Bai Thong is not/won't be. This most recent 2-star trip was my second trip to Bai Thong. Obviously I liked it enough the first time to return. The first time I ordered something I'd never had anywhere before. It was a rice dish with halved hard-boiled eggs and other ingredients with a "special sauce." The special sauce was reddish sweet sauce, not unlike a Chinese duck sauce. That went under my "That was interesting, but I wouldn't do it again" tab. On this most recent Friday night trip we started the coconut chicken soup (Tom Kha Gai). It had good flavor, small bite-size pieces of tender chicken and fairly large slices of large white/button mushrooms. Not a very flavorful mushroom, but okay. I rarely order Pad Thai these days. I feel like it should be very good to outstanding in any Thai restaurant, a staple like a good apple pie in any place calling itself a pie shop. Whoever was in the kitchen on that Friday night needs a break from cooking or maybe take a refresher course. It was a bad Pad Thai. I ordered the pork Pad Thai. The pork itself was fairly flavorless, but that was just the first thing I tasted. When attempting to mix the pad thai the first thing I noticed was that the noodles were clumped together. I'd never before seen clumped noodles served in pad thai in a restaurant. Beyond that, the seasoning was dull and when I asked for lime, the very nice waiter informed me that lemon was the only option. A squeeze of fresh lemon did improve the flavor, but this was honestly the worst Pad Thai I've ever been served in a restaurant. I chose to not send it back. I may order Pad Thai there again. It was so bad, I think it must have been inexperience in the kitchen that night. I can't believe they always serve such a bad Pad Thai. If it's bad on the second try, I will just send it back. It's summer in Tucson. Everyone's business is slow except maybe Eegee's. Give Bai Thong a try. Help them get on track and once again be able to afford limes.

I went during my lunch hour and ordered thai curry dish vegetarian. The dish was really good. It came with fried tofu and vegetables. It also came with fried won tons and eggroll which were good too. The only bad thing I think is that that they do not have brown rice. In addition, there was way more curry given than rice. I only ate half my curry for the amount of rice was given. I needed more rice! The lunch dish also comes with soup. However, if you are a vegetarian, do not drink the soup. There is meat in it. The service was okay. The food came out pretty quick but the server never came to refill my water.

So far the best Thai food in town. We went for a lunch and the lunch menu was great with good portion size. The starter soup was yummy. We ordered pad thai and yellow curry and it was delicious. I am definitely going back again.

Have been going here a lot over the past year. It's always delicious, and a great weeknight splurge that won't leave you broke. The owners are very gracious and take great pride in their food. Still must order the green papaya salad every time, but I'm getting more adventurous with the entrees. Never disappointed.

A few nights ago I was really craving Thai food and originally headed to Char's Thai but they closed an hour earlier than their usual hours so in desperation I went a block north to this restaurant and I am very glad I did! Service was great! So despite showing up 30mins till close, the single waitress took me and my friend's order of 1 thai iced tea, 1 Panang yellow curry and 1 Pad Thai. The food arrived incredibly quickly and was exactly what we wanted in a curry and pad thai. The curry had lots of chicken, perfectly spiced and was a very reasonable sized portion. The Pad Thai was authentic and delicious, and a large portion as well! This may very well be my new favorite Thai food place in Tucson, but i will have to explore their expansive menu to see if i have as good of luck with these 2 classic dishes as I do with their more obscure menu items.

The last time I was here was probably a year ago. Giving it a second try this time, my opinion has stayed the same. Yep, two stars because I've experienced better. The food is not that great. The flavors were...... shy of thai flavors that I'm use to. Portions were small but still filling. Good thing we had dinner family style. Papaya salad didnt have a spicy kick at all. If you had the options to adjust the heat meter, then our waitress didnt ask us. The pad thai noodles were not fully soaked so they were somewhat tough. The sauce for the pad thai was good, but not as sweet like what I'm use too. The seafood soup was good. Probably the best thing I tried. It had good amounts of seafood. Tried the honey duck dish, different I must say. The sauce was very sweet but if you have a bit of pineapple in every bite then it was perfect. Oh the chicken curry......There is no chicken curry dish that can compare to my aunts. However, I do take it really easy when rating others. This had to be a 3 if my aunt's is a 10. Just not close, smh.

I have gone to Thailand many times on my way to other places in Asia. Bai Thongs food is the best for the price in Tucson. If I could give a grade for ambiance it would get maybe a 2 and the service would get a 5. Never the less the food is great and there is nothing on the menu that I have had I did not like. So if you don't mind eating in a drab strip mall next to the tackiest dollar store in town, and you don't mind mediocre service this is the place for great food. Most Asian restaurants worth going to for good food don't have great decor.

  • E N.

I drove wayyy out of my way to get here and it was kind of a disappointment. The best part of the whole restaurant was their exotic table cloths. I took advantage of their lunch specials only to find that it would have been a much fairer portion had I ordered a regular entree. The soup which accompanied the meal was probably the best part, it had a delicate light broth. The egg roll was alright, although I must admit that it was cooked and wrapped perfectly. As far as the rest of the food goes it was just meh. It was unimpressionable and I doubt that I will return again.

I had an excellent curry dish on my last visit and a great Pad Thai the time before. The decor is pretty bare bones and the service is hit or miss. If you want authentic Thai food though, you won't be disappointed otherwise.

The best Thai restaurant in Tucson. The tom kha gai (soup) and the pad Thai (noodles) are very good. Better than than other local Thai restaurants too sweet offerings. I want to give it SEVEN stars!

Dont be adventurous here, stick with the classics like chicken pad thai. Ive been twice and it was good and fast. Also if you love thai ice tea its the best ive had in tucson.

Another asian food disaster in Tucson. I had the pineapple fried rice and well it was gross. The rice was undercooked, dried out, but moist with grease, yuk! My man had the red curry with chicken and it was sub-par. We asked for the food Thai hot and not! It couldn't have made my mouth burn or salivate if it had to. The food was overpriced as well. I won't go back, it was also empty, for good reason I see.

I've been to four Thai restaurants in Tucson and this one is the best!! This is true Thai style food, not the Americanized Thai that the other restaurants serve. I moved from Chicago, where there were awesome delicious Thai restaurants all over the city, to Tucson, where they all were mediocre at best and I didn't want to go back to any. But now that I've found Bai Thong I can be happy eating Thai again! It is the only Thai restaurant with Crab Rangoon (called Crab Puff here) and they were delicious... airy puffs of yum with a nice sweet sauce. They have three spice levels for the dishes... medium, hot, and Thai spicy (wowza hot). We got Pad See Ewe with chicken (a sweet dish) and green curry done hot. Both were excellent. They serve Phuket beer which was good too. We were one of the few people in the restaurant so we had good service. We liked the Thai music playing and talked to the server about it. He was really friendly. I'm definitely going to be regular here.

Anyone who doesn't like this place simply doesn't like Thai food. It's hands down the best in the city. Is the service good? No. Is it a pretty atmosphere? No. But who cares, it's seriously awesome curry and pad thai and authentic as you can get in Tucson.

What makes a good Pad Thai? What makes a bad one for that matter? Well, I have an opinion; it's based on getting the noodles in one plate and the toppings (the peanuts, sprouts, basil, etc.) on separate dishes. I gravitate toward places that serve up this universal Thai dish in that simple fashion. Sadly, Bai Thong does not fall into my kind of Thai place. I drove around in search of something to eat and being a vegetarian I know that Thai restaurants will always cater to "veg heads" (oh, that's just another of my personal phrases). Anyway, I walk into this high ceiling and well lighted place, which should have clued me in on what to expect. I ordered the Pad Thai and about ten minutes later I got back a medium sized plate with a medium sized serving of my favorite Thai dish. Instead of saying that the food was awful, I'll offer that it was okay. It fell short of my expectations because all the little extras that I love to mix into the noodles - myself, were already blended in. So that's why they get the rating above. The price was okay too, not bad really. The crisp noodle: - $7.50 Vegetarian Pad Thai with most veggie dishes at $8.00 and under. - Most dishes fell under $10.00 with just a handful of exceptions - Fast - $5.95 lunch specials - Mid Town location The limpy noodle: - Too bright - no ambiance - Medium sized servings - order 3 dishes for every 2 big eaters - Average flavoring - look elsewhere for knockout punch cuisine Bottom line? I've had lots better than this. Look around for better liked venues. But keep the lunch special prices in mind if you can deal with okay tasting food.

Well, this place is really hit or miss. Sometimes I order the tofu red thai curry and it is quite nice, delicate flavors of basil and chili, etc etc. The last time I ordered it, not so much. for one thing, though they did throw some tofu in there, there was also some unbvelievably disgusting looking pink chicken, all curled up and ligament-y. Not good for someone epecting a vegetarian curry! yuk! Pad Thai is standard, and the pad see ew is BAD. i have not yet found a good thai place in tucson, doubting I ever will.

I've always liked this place. Took my mom (who is from Thailand) and she judges it to be of decent-good quality Thai food. I've never felt bad for going there. I like the Panang curry here much more than the curry at Bangkok Cafe or Vila Thai.

A very nice staff but the food is really hit or miss. Their food tends to be sweet for my liking (yes I know parts of Thailand cook their food that way). If you stick to standard staples (pad Thai) you can get a good cheap meal.

The food is mediocre in my experience, but a coworker of mine swears that the mussels here are wonderful. The main thing I remember from my visit, is that they would pour my soda out of a half empty 2 liter bottle. It tasted flat, and made me wonder what other kind of half-ass jobs they were doing back there.

bai thong is indicative of the kind of middling, mediocre thai food that is prevalent in tucson. restaurants like this would not survive in other legitimate metropolitan areas. there is not a single dish i would recommend or get excited about ordering. service is also very slow. pad thai is much too sweet. shrimps have a peculiar smell and are not fresh.

I won't go back, it was also empty, for good reason I see.

bai thong is indicative of the kind of middling, mediocre thai food that is prevalent in tucson. restaurants like this would not survive in other legitimate metropolitan areas. there is not a single dish i would recommend or get excited about ordering. service is also very slow. pad thai is much too sweet. shrimps have a peculiar smell and are not fresh.

  • Matthew B.

A very nice staff but the food is really hit or miss. Their food tends to be sweet for my liking (yes I know parts of Thailand cook their food that way). If you stick to standard staples (pad Thai) you can get a good cheap meal.

Great food.

My new favorite Thai place! Curry and pad Thai were both incredible! Will be back! Although the restaurant isn't the fanciest, the food makes up for it. No military discount, but lunch for two was just under $20.

The food is mediocre in my experience, but a coworker of mine swears that the mussels here are wonderful. The main thing I remember from my visit, is that they would pour my soda out of a half empty 2 liter bottle. It tasted flat, and made me wonder what other kind of half-ass jobs they were doing back there.

Dont be adventurous here, stick with the classics like chicken pad thai. Ive been twice and it was good and fast. Also if you love thai ice tea its the best ive had in tucson.
