i really enjoyed the food here. large portions, fresh food, and not too greasy. and the extra veggies/toppings/etc from the condiment bar is a really nice touch. the baked potato stuffed with all the meat and cheese and such was to die for!! I also had he carne asada tacos and the carne asada quesadilla - so yummy! there was too much food for us to finish but it wasn't for the lack of trying! you can eat there - they have picnic tables under a shelter. Or you can have the food brought into the Rusty Nail if you want to grab a beer in the bar to have with your food. Awesome!

GREAT taco truck food. We always get the Sonoran hot dogs, carne asada tacos and my husband likes the Carmelos. They are so delicious and the best in town for sure. It is outside so we normally get our food to go but it's still just as good when we get home.

This has to be some of the best.. everything I ate here so far.. Mexican food in the Tucson area. For coming out of a little taco cart, man they know how to do it right. I know its practically fighting words in this town, but I'd venture to say El Nene is up there for best Sonoran Dog in Tucson. The bacon on the hot dog is really what shines, perfectly crispy with just enough blackened ends to lend the dog that bit of smoke it needs. ------NOTE: THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY------ I made that mistake the first time. My friend and I ventured from across town, eagerly awaiting our chance to try some of the carne asada and famous sonoran dogs, only to realize they didn't take cards. Also I wasn't aware but apparently they won (almost won?) some national contest for best hot dog on a food show of some sort. Pretty cool. We finally arrived at El Nene's prepared, cash in hand, and ready to go. I think there is an ATM next door but I'm principled when it comes to ATM fees. I got a sonoran hot dog, and a few different types of tacos. First, cabeza is my favorite type taco meat, and El Nene's does it very well. Slow cooked, juicy, succulent, a little fatty but I like it that way. If you haven't ever, try the cabeza. Now the carne asada.. some of the best I've ever had to be sure. They cook it on a smokey grill out back, you can see it when you're pulling up to park behind the tent. The smoked lime flavor, and tenderness of the steak is perfect. They also have plenty of salsas and toppings on their salsa bar to add some zest anyway you see fit. Tacos also come in varying forms of soft or crispiness. I had both a tacos dorados, and a regular soft taco. I have to say, the dorado was the better of the two. The deep fried corn shell was perfectly well done. For a little taco cart on a corner in the flowing wells neighborhood, I am seriously impressed. This is fresh cooked, no-bologna, ready to order authentic Mexican food. I highly recommend giving it a try.

So, this is where I finally tried my first Sonoran hot dog. A food truck out of all places. What did I think? It was definitely different, and justifiably I can say that a Sonoran hot dog is pretty legit. Let's get to it. What is this place? Well, since it was close by and according to Yelpers in Tucson, this place was a great place to get the Sonoran hot dog compared to the other more famous places. One thing I do regret was not being able to try all the other types of versions so I could compare, but nonetheless I came here so I could say that I had it and I have to say I enjoyed it. What do you need to know about this place? *********CASH ONLY*********** - this is probably the biggest thing that you should know. So supposedly this Sonoran hot dog is basically a hotdog rolled in bacon served with some mustard, beans, grilled onions, tomatoes and then from there it seems like from place to place they have variations. Honestly, I only had one hot dog, and I sort of wished I got another one. One didn't do it justice. I also ordered some tacos, of course due to my diet I didn't get it with any tortillas and substituted it with the protein style. It was not bad. It was small, but that was expected. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and if I could have changed anything about my experience it would be that I got another hot dog! Get it and check this place out!

Awesome food and set up for a food truck! They have a large tent, salsa bar and even a sink/sanitizing station - it feels like a mini fast food restaurant with quality, fresh and delicious food! The tacos are my favorite. Best in Tucson. It comes with grilled Mexican onions and fresh tortillas.

This is an EXCELLENT place to get your Mexican street food. He has a permanent structure with a roof, a fan, and seating for about 50. I went there at around 3 o'clock and the place was hopping busy. I had the Chipalon style Sonoran dawg and a flour tortilla carne asada taco. Both were excellent and I enjoyed them. However, I could not taste the bacon at all in the dawg. And compared to Hotdog Solutions, I could hardly taste the bacon and the cheese in it. The taco, however, was excellent. They have great food here and I can't wait to try other items on their menu. I love how they serve grilled green onions. These are the green onions with the big white bulbs at the end and they are quite tasty grilled.

OMG I love this place! The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the wait. This place does get very busy. The first time I ate their I was craving it again and had it twice in one week. I love street tacos. I heard all their food is good so you can't go wrong. They have a huge condiment bar with different salsas, veggies and everything you need for your food. The place only takes cash so don't forget to your your money.

The one place my friend told me I'd have to try in Tucson...El Nene! Food: Sonoran Hot Dog - So I'm guessing this is an AZ thing because I've never heard of this anywhere else except Phoenix and Tucson. Pretty much a decked up dirty dog (bacon wrapped hot dog) on a fancier bun. It hit the spot. Carne Asada Taco - One of the best I've had in a while. Very flavorful and juicy. Service: Taco truck ordering and wait. Self serve on sauces. Not much to say about service...you're ordering from a taco truck. Environment: Tented dining area where there is a fan, self serve salsa, benches/tables and plenty of flies. I sat where the fan blew thinking the flies won't bother me then, but my napkins ended up flying all over the place. Fail....I know.... Price: Taco truck prices = thumbs up Food: 4 Service: 3 Environment: 3 Price: 4

Carne Asada Papancha! Oh my goodness. First place we went to eat on our visit to Tucson. 5 Stars for a Taco Truck!!!!

I know food trucks have come a long way, but I was still a bit wary about eating here. Once I got a good look at the food though, that went right out the window! The place is a little hard to spot when driving, so just look for the 'Rusty Nail' sign that leads to a bar sharing the same parking lot. Recommend: Sonoran dogs Tortas (very buttery goodness!) Tacos Burrito Jr.'s ...ALL were excellent!! I usually get a little irritated when a place receives a high rating for subpar Mexican food, but not this place. Everything was so flavorful, tender, and fresh. The employees are another asset to this place. They are very friendly, fast, and obviously do a great job of cooking. When we were done eating they wrapped up our food in little meat department packaging for us! I really appreciated that extra step. They play music in the seating area, and there is a flat screen TV. The open tent seating area is kept very clean after each table leaves, and they have an awesome salsa bar with just about every condiment you can think of. I usually drink my salsa before I start to gauge a restaurant's salsa making capabilities, and I must say, this place makes great hot and savory salsas! Drinks were soda out of a can (bottle Pepsi), and cash only~!!! I'm excited to have a new place to haunt.

Tried this place out after someone mentioned their name from a competitor's review. So I did a head-to-head comparison on their Sonoran dog. El Nene's beat out the other place hands-down. El Nene's is not as pretty of a dog to look at, but it is much more savory and the hot dog wrapped with bacon is so so good. If you're a starving adult male, grab 2 or 3 dogs to satisfy your craving. Also try their caramello too. It's really good and this is coming from a lactose intolerant guy. yes, I will brave the end results to taste El Nene's caramello. On it's location, keep your eyes out for a food trailer on a dirt lot. The place has great food and lots of character!

  • Lee S.

Definitely one of the best places for Mexican food in Tucson. What I like: - Papancha (baked potato, topped with meat, bacon, cheese, and mushrooms; I leave the mushrooms off) - the variety of meat (carne asada, pollo asado, adobada, cabeza) - the giant salsa bar - the price What I don't like: - the place is always busy and it can be difficult to park sometimes - cash only

  • Mike B.

I've driven past this place a million times before finally trying it out. And now I'm sad thinking of the million sonoran dogs I've missed out on. They were great! And food is cheap! What is it about this style of Mexican food that makes it so cheap? I spend more for less at Taco Bell and El Nene is far superior, I know it goes without saying. Maybe that's a bad comparison but I think you get my point. A few bucks here gets you a full belly of great Mexican food. I can't wait to get back and try something different.

  • Holly C.

I'm not crazy about hot dogs... or mayo but I LOVED the Sonoran hot dogs! All the flavors and toppings came together so well. They have a pretty good salsa bar, which I wasn't expecting. We ended our meal with a caramelo which was good. The horchada was okay compared to the one we had earlier in the day.

  • Cody F.

Best authentic Mexican food I've eaten in Tucson. The location and little taco shack is a little shabby but the food is absolutely delicious. Lots of options with the sauces and salsa. Food has always tasted great and am satisfied every time I go. I would definitely recommend this if you like authentic Mexican food.

  • Kyle S.

haiku review: Aqui con yummy The best Sonoran hot dogs Try the papancha! OK this is a Mexican food truck done right. EVERYTHING I have eaten here has been good. I can't honestly remember eating a bad meal here, sure there have been days where they phoned it in but even then it is good and better than most. Its a food truck so I have no problem bringing my own soda with me when I come here. but they do have sodas and Mexican drinks too. When I think of northern Mexican food this is what I use as my benchmark.

  • Jonah H.

I have NO IDEA why this place gets high ratings. It's a food van that's permanently parked by a tent at the intersection of a road. POSITIVES - they had a wounded warrior sticker on their window. NEGATIVES: Parking is terrible but you can find a space even when it's a busy weekend night, just don't expect to park in a straight line. I had the hard taco and a burrito (asada) They have the Sonoran hot dogs, I've never had one. Compared to California it is completely average and I don't have a high opinion of California. It's also a long wait, not just to order but after you order, which I wouldn't have a problem with if it tasted good.

  • MaryAnn L.

Shall I dare say it? Here it goes...Nene's Sonoran hot dog is the BEST, better than BK or Guero Canelo's! Had a couple of "taste test" bites of one (almost ate the whole thing), and oh my, it was pretty darn tasty! So flavorful and topped with fresh tomatoes and condiments! I'll have to go back and have another to make sure.. lol. A couple of my co-workers and I went here for lunch the other day. It was booming! Didn't think this little food truck (right in front of the Rusty Nail) would be soooo popular. It was my first time going, but I'd heard a lot of good things about this wonderful little hidden treasure! Since we came during the lunch rush, we had to wait a bit longer than expected for our food. Only ordered a couple of menu items and had to wait about 10-15 minutes! But hey, it was lunchtime, and I could see the workers in the truck working their butts off! I love the extra condiments that they offered which were next to the tables. Cucumbers, pico de gallo, fresh roasted peppers, shredded cheese, mushrooms, different kinds of salsa and more! Free for the taking to compliment your order! =) I had ordered the carmelo de asada & the carne asada tacos dorados . The meat for both was tender, tasty, and cooked perfectly! Very delightfully flavorful with the pico de gallo and green salsa! All in all, even with the wait, the food, service, and experience was still good! Can't beat the prices either! My only complaint was that on a hot, hot day in Tucson, it sucks to wait in the heat. Next time we'll come after the lunch rush. Ha ha. But oh well, the food was definitely worth it! =)

The reason I even write these Yelp reviews is for my own personal reference, so that I can remember the great places I've eaten across the country. This place is unforgettable. Either that or I'm just fiend-ing for good Mexican because I've been on the East Coast too long and this is the first legit truck I could find. Either way, order the torta and decide for yourself. I would have given it five stars for the salsa bar and smiling faces coming out of the truck alone, but I gotta wait til I eat there a few more times. Oh, and they got that Sonoran hot dog too.

    (4)
  • Oulie T.

The Sonoran hot dog here trumps the one at El Guero Canelo. The warmed cheesy bun makes a world of difference. It perfectly cradles the hot dog and it's numerous Sonoran fixin's. It's a small taco truck that packs the best tasting punch.

    (5)
  • Kevin L.

So good! Best steak tacos I've had! That says a lot. Great after taking a bike ride on the Riverwalk. Insane amount of condiments. I love Mexican food and was shocked how good this was.

Every year I go to the Tucson Gem and Mineral show in, okay you got me, Tucson Arizona. I did my homework as I always do when I go to a strange city. Food is second on the list proceeded by the lodging. Once the place to lay my head has been secured, the mind turns to food. So I'm looking at top ten reviews in the Tucson area and this hotdog truck with a strange name keeps coming up. I went to Yelp to see what all the fuss was about and decided to give the place a try. The catering truck is set up on a corner in a dirt lot. There is tent covered area to sit and eat at. They have an incredible selection of condiments to dress the dog with. When I ordered the Sonoran Hot Dog, a dog wrapped in bacon, and laid into a soft hot dog bun as I was told in all of the reviews, the guy asked what I wanted on the dog, and I said go ahead and make it the way you designed it. So they put on beans, mayo, mustard, grilled onions and well whatever they put on those suckers. I added a few of the condiments they have out on a condiment table, and went to town. Two dogs are enough to satisfy the normal guy, but I can see where I could be persuaded to go for a third. They are incredible. Okay, it's just a hotdog for goodness sake! I'm sitting in a dirt parking lot already! Really?really? They also have stuffed baked potatoes but alas, never had enough room for one of those suckers. I can imagine all of those condiments they have would make for a killer baked potato. Maybe this coming year I will give it a try. If you are in Tucson, don't miss this place. You will thank me. I promise!

My favorite quick mexican food in tucson. Cabeza tacos are amazing. Best sonoran hit dogs in tucson. No competition. The only thing i havent tried is the potato thing, but i can assure you everything else is worth your visit. Its also insanely cheap

  • Melissa K.

Just another place serving sonoran hotdogs you say... well yes, BUT these dogs are the best I have had in town, even beating my usual favorite El Guero Canelo! Maybe its eating outside, maybe its the huge condiment station, maybe it was the real Mexican coke I sipped on while waiting... Whatever the reason, I am VERY HAPPY to have some great Mexican Food so close to where I spend 40 hours a week! El Nene is fast, delicious and reasonably prices.. $2.75 for a Sonoran Dog shouldn't hurt your pocket book too much!

  • Hanson T.

Came here for the first time and my family enjoyed the carne asada taco and hot dog. The hot dog was really good and the bun was very soft. It was really crowded on a Saturday night. That's a sign of them being good. See you again next time when we visit Tucson.

    (4)
  • Lil B.

Been eating here since the beginning. Best Sonoran dog in town hands down. The comp is overrated and his buns and ingredients aren't as fresh. Their carne is also good and i also mess w a caramelo from time to time. There is a reason rachel ray said Nene's is the second best hot dogs in the U.S.

    (5)
  • Karin K.

Yummy tacos. Not sure if they got my order wrong, but my pork and chicken tacos looked and tasted the same. They tasted very good! The Sonaran dog was decent, kinda soggy by the time we got it. The food came out at different times and it was hard to hear them calling names. But it was a good find.

  • Cara M.

Best. Hotdog. Of. My. Life. Wow oh wow oh wow. I got a Sonoran Hotdog with everything - wanted to immerse myself. I think it was gone in less than a minute. Got my order in...oh...30 seconds, and I was third in line.

  • Rikki L.

This place is fantastic. The food is fast and delicious. The Yaqui Tacos are especially amazing.

    (5)
  • Fred N.

The best Carne Asada can bee found in two places...Aquino Con El Nene, and Guerros 5 stars

    (5)
  • Charlene ..

Wow...they have a seriously good Sonoran-style hot dog. I have never been to El Guero Canelo or BK's but I am glad I decided to come to this place. I got the toasted hot dog with cheese. I think toasting the bun makes a big difference in the taste. It gives hot dog a nice crunch and flavor. Adding a variety of toppings from their condiment bar on the hot dog makes the hot dog exceed its excellence even more.

I would have never considered stopping here (never would have seen it, for that matter) if it weren't for a friendly tip given to me by the Dobbs Honda courtesy shuttle driver. This place is located just up the road from the auto mall, and the shuttle driver - who hailed from Rio Rico - assured me this was the most authentic mexican food he'd found in Tucson. He recommended the carne asada, but I'm a sucker for a good Sonoran hot dog, so I tried the Chipilon, which comes on a toasted bun with cheese along with the standard bacon-wrapped hot dog, tomatoes, grilled onions, pinto beans, mayo, mustard... wow. It was amazing! They have a salsa bar where you can load up with more condiments (cucumbers, grilled onions, hot peppers). Not only was it was delicious, it was cheap - $2.75. Throw in a Negra Modelo and I was one happy camper. This is definitely going to be my regular chow spot when I'm taking the Honda in for servicing. I might order the carne asada next time, but the Chipilon is going to be a hard act to follow!

We wanted to try some of the local cuisine while on vacation and saw this place on Yelp. I guarantee that you will drive through the intersection twice before you figure out where to enter the parking lot. We just ordered the Sonoran dogs, which were unique and very tasty, especially the grilled pepper that comes with it. Quite a variety of salsas and condiments to go with it. Definitely a great lunch, but bring cash.

  • Fernando A.

Words can't explain how much I love this place. From the Sonoran Dogs to the tacos, to the Papanchas, everything on the menu is just strait up tasty. Old school Coke out the bottle and 2 Carne asada tacos and a Sonoran Dog.. Thebomb.com . My only complaint is for some reason I crave it the most on Sundays and they're closed =( but hey they deserve family time like everybody else. Love this place!

    (5)
  • Alexander R.

This place is good but can be little expensive (charge extra "dining in" which is kind of dumb) I always get what I order to go and pay with cash. I recommend the Burrito Mixto (Filled with Carne Asada, Adobada "marinated pork" and cabbage) plus the pickled onions, guacamole, red salsa and limes on the side. Also the lorenza is very good (tostada with cheese, any type of meat, and cabbage) Their Horchata is refreshing which may be overpriced but worth it. I'd rather come here than to Del Taco (nasty fake Mexican food). PEACE Fellow Yelpers.

  • Ryan S.

Now I know why so many people are saying these guys make the best Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson. My girlfriend and I were stunned in disbelief at how something as simple as a hot dog could have so much amazing flavor. Hands down the best tasting hot dog I've ever had. We also got some tacos that were good, but I wouldn't say they matched the same level of flavor as the hot dogs. All in all they have some great food and I can't wait to come back to try more menu items (and of course more hot dogs).

    (5)
  • Hannah F.

Yummiest Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson. The food comes out fast and fresh, despite the fact they are constantly busy. The employees are friendly and have been able to run the best taco stand in Tucson since I can even remember.

When I worked nearby, I used to come eat here once a week. Consistently amazing!

Wow. I cannot believe that I have not reviewed Aqui Con El Nene yet! This is my favorite place to get fast Mexican food in Tucson. When I have friends visit from out of town, I take them here. Caramelos and sonoran hotdogs all day. I used to work late nights and this was one of the only places open when I got off. I knew this place was legit during my first visit when some little kids were running around trying to sell me DVDs of movies that were still in theaters... :D If you come at night, do not be thrown off by the people who eat here. Just go get an manzana Jarritos and order a large caramelo de asada. Me gusta.

  • Tyrus K.

Eat here! The best Sonora hot dogs I have had. They also have a covered seating area with excellent salsas and sauces at the salsa bar.

Bomb everything....well I haven't tried everything per say but what I have is amazing. If you are in the area, go! They are very busy at times so I would suggest not during lunch time rush.

  • Jason T.

hands down the best sonoran dogs in Tucson. I've tried all the others and this place can't be beat for taste and price. I haven't bothered trying anything else on the menu because all I want to get when I go here are the dogs! Add a sugary mexican soda and your meal is complete. When we go on dive bar tours and hit the stockman's lounge we always hit El Nene.

Tasty, with a huge spread of salsas and toppings.

I feel like an obstinate teenager writing this review. "Okay, FINE Mom. Aqui Con El Nene's Sonoran Hot Dogs were just as good if not maybe better then Guerro Canelo." You see, I hold every hot dog to the Guerro standard. I am something of a Sonoran Hot Dog connoisseur, and when someone told me these were better, I went along to humor them, knowing in the depths of my heart that they could not be better. Well, I will (reluctantly) admit that I was wrong. They were at least as good as Guerro, but I have to try them again to make the full judgement of if they were as good or if they were better. The bun, while also divine at Guerro, at Nene's was less doughy and....glutony? It was softer and more airy, though it could still definitely hold all of the fixins! Also, something that I judge very harshly at any place is the avocado sauce. I could drink the stuff most of the time. This one was absolutely better than Guerro. Don't get me wrong! Both are delicious! But the one here actually had a tiny little kick of heat to it, and as it turns out I super enjoyed it.

There is almost no "Mexican" food back home in Pittsburgh, so everything in Tucson is pretty good to me, but this place is outstanding. Everything was so fresh, so tasty, so different. We just kept ordering more. We came for a Sonoran Dog, but tried everything! Hope to come back for dinner.

  • Nick D.

One of the best hot dog / taco carts in Tucson. I have been to all the popular hot dog places in Tucson including the ones on South 12th and South 6th and in my opinion El Nene has the best Sonoran dogs in all of Tucson. You should also try the papancha. It's a potato on steroids.

I have been DYING to try this place. Let me set the scene... We passed this place on the way to a friend's house and I told my wife, maybe after their party we can stop here on our way home." She says, "OK, we'll see if they are still open"... and to my utter happiness THEY WERE! We got our food to go and the whole trip home I had to resist the urge to just pull over and start tearing into the food. My jowls ached from holding back the waterfall inside my jaw. After AN ETERNITY, we get home and open the food. I am not disappointed. I ordered us each a carne asada quesadilla, which the guy corrected me to call them caramelos. Call them what you want. For $3.75, they are little meat filled blankets of love. I made it a point to take as many offerings as I could from the plentiful salsa bar. I am sure they watched in amazement as I left with my bulging bag-o-salsa-bar. Don't judge - I wanted to try it all. I also had a Sonoran dog. Although I just don't think I am a fan of Sonoran dogs in general, this was probably the best I have had. The caramelos were, altogether, another story. My wife actually said they were too cheesy. WAT? No, they had the perfect amount of cheese and LOTS of tasty carne asada, I adorned each bite with a different kind of salsa, liquid cheese, pickled onions and cucumbers from my bag-o-salsa-bar, Each bite was better than the last. Long story short - OK you already got the long version - the best $10 I have spent on this amount of food in a very long time.

  • Jared G.

Maybe the best sonoran dog I have had....I think better then El Guero Canelo, but barely. The cheese quesadilla type thing (not called a quesadilla) with steak is awesome as well. Only negative is I think they forgot our food or something because at least 2 or 3 groups ordered after us and received their food first, and it was only two of us.

Omg there chicken tacos are to die for. Staff is very nice and there condiments station is the best I've seen. Thank goodness it's close to my house so I could come everyday lol

Best taco stand in Tucson! Everything I've had here is awesome! I suggest a papancha with carne asada. I don't eat hot dogs but this place makes me question wether I should start!

Best Sonoran dogs in the North West of Tucson that I could find. Also Mexican coca cola can't beat that. Kicker best price too.

Alright Tucson, there is some major magic going on on the corner of Wetmore and Flowing Wells. It's kind of a drive for most of us, but who wouldn't make the effort for a taste of some of the most succulent Sonoran food offerings in the OP? PLUS, the magicians cooking up all this deliciousness are doing it out of a food truck! These guys hail from Ciudad Obregon (which is where my mother is from) and not only are they serving all kinds of tasty treats in a timely fashion, at reasonable prices, but they also include one of the BEST complimentary condiment bars in T-Town. You can load up on fresh cucumber, shredded lettuce, pickled red onions, pico de gallo, cilantro, onion, guacamole, salsas....and the list goes on! I've had the luxury of enjoying the Sonoran hot-dog, served on a fluffy toasted bun and loaded with beans, bacon, tomatoes and onion..YUM If you haven't tried their Lorenzas do it! A Lorenza is a corn tortilla that is baked/fried so its kind of like a tostada, but its served with melted cheese and any meat of your choice. Then you can garnish it any which way you want! Their carne asada torta was pretty darned tasty too. There is plenty of seating if you want to show this place to a group of friends. I am definitely not surprised that Rachel Ray listed Aqui con el Nene on her Tasty Travels show. Don't miss out on this place Yelper friends!

  • Scott S.

The Torta's a this place are freakin' amazing! Absolutely one of the best things I have ever eaten in 50+ years and lots of travelling. My wife loves the Papancha just as much. Friendly staff every time. This place is just a jewel that should not be missed.. Ignore the dumpy bar next door and go!

Aqui con El Nene is a fantastic place to grab a great Sonoran Dog. I've been coming here with my best friend since we were in the 10th grade. Over the years, it has grown from a tiny food stand to what it is today; a not so tiny food stand! But don't let it's outer appearance fool you as it has the best Sonoran Dogs you can get(sorry Guero Canelo, my heart is set.) They also have fantastic Mexican food of all flavors, so don't get narrow sighted. On a scale of yuck to phenomenal, I give it an A+. Keep it up guys! (Also, I know you speak spanish and all, but could you please pronounce Dallas right for once? Die-yas just doesnt suit me ;P)

It better be good when you face sitting outside in 100-degree temps! And it was! Gary (1/3 of my dining trio & my life love) and I have passed this little side of the road, in the parking lot food truck restaurant forever, and we never tried it. We recently heard some raves, and thought, "we better get on the band wagon and finally try this joint!" And we are thrilled with the results! A young man took our order out of the truck window and was very gracious. Gary ordered the large Caramelo con pollo (grilled chicken with a corn or flour tortilla, kind of like a round sandwich), while I ordered a small Caramelo with chicken plus a Sonoran hot dog with everything that was not battened down and not spicy. We LOVED our meal (and we loved the reasonable prices!). We ate right there in the heat, sitting in chairs at a table under an awning, and the heat didn't even phase us. We were too busy enjoying, along with a handful of others, including a family. We also spotted a number of drive-up diners who ordered to-go food, which was prepped quickly. The other fun part about El Nene is the condiment bar, which is extensive. I happen to love slathering nearly everything on my meal. The Caramelos lent themselves to this hearty treatment, just begging for a variety of toppings. Let's see, some of what I remember adding included marinated onions, liquidy cheese (they also have grated cheese), marinated corn, mushrooms, and pico de gallo. They had plenty more available. My Sornoran hot dog contained a variety of goodies (I didn't dissect it but I know it had onions, mustard, chili beans--not spicy, tomatoes or salsa, cheese, a few calories, oh-and a smoky-flavored hot dog, and a few other condiments on a soft bun). Gary covered his large Caramelo with so much stuff that you couldn't see the original dish (see the photo). We enjoyed it so much that we got another order of what I ate to go for our hair dresser. We like to feed her surprises when we go, and she also went head over heels with these tasty treats! All I can say is YUM, go try El Nene! I took a few photos & I'll upload them after I write this, so go peek. (I felt like such a tourista doing that, but I wanted to share with you.)

I live in San Francisco now, but I'm driving to Tucson today. ... and This is what I'm most excited about going back to Tucson. This hot dog stand. Their Hot Dogs de Chipilon are the things that dreams are made of. If you haven't had one, imagine the best mexican hot dog you can... got it??... okay, now before all that bacon-wrapped happiness goes in the bun, they put in some cheese... and when it's all done, they toast the outside.... okay, now if you're still with me, that's the heaven-sent baby of a mexican hotdog and a grilled cheese sandwich. get one. now. it will change your life.

If you're in search of authentic and delicious Mexican street food, this is a place to go. I got a Sonoran dog and a cabeza taco and both were amazing. For those of you who don't know, cabeza means "head" and is basically the soft fatty parts of a cow's face. I'd had one once before (in another city, much farther from the border) and it was as revolting as the description sounds, but the one at Aqui Con El Nene was possibly the best taco I've ever had--tender and delicious. Note: just in case it isn't clear, this is a taco stand, not a restaurant. There are picnic tables under an awning where you can eat, but don't expect any white tablecloths.

Once upon a time in the dusty town in the badlands of Tucson there was a Taco truck on the Corner of Wetmore and a wet Canadian. They had a hot-dog that had been hand made by angels from heaven that sing songs of magical enchantment until the drones of other Sonoran dogs are just considered devil songs. The food here is just like waking up from a long awaited nap after the heat of battle. No more local hot dog chains made famous from a lackluster Food network....just locals bringing the heat on from a truck made from dreams. In this dream ...I will make this simple....I work very close to this place. I have been here many times over the last few years. So, they are consistent in their quality. There are other place in town that people think are the best for the famous Sonoran Hot Dog. This place is king of the Sonoran Dog. No one can touch them....kings. Like mama said knock you out Kings! Asada Tacos, Carmelo's, condiments....all of it is legit. Come here...don't mind the dusty parking lot...this is Tucson. You are allowed to have a concealed carry and the right to super dank Mexican food.

Ok heres the deal, this place had the most authentic Sonora style taqueria set-up in the US. They had everything going over open flame mesquite...green onions, asada, pollo, papas(potatoes). Incredible salsa bar. If you are in the Tucson area, make your way towards this place.

This is the real Tucson. Hailing from Phoenix, food trucks had a really terrible connotation of being dirty, greasy, disgusting food that you were likely to catch some sort of terminal disease from. For anyone who feels this way, YOU ARE DEAD WRONG, at least when it comes to Tucson. My first time, I had to be dragged here by a friend because of my predisposition. Had I not gone, would have been one of the worst decisions of my life. I have since dragged well over 20 people here who have in turn done the same. I get serious, heroin-style withdrawal from not eating here often enough, so be forewarned! Aqui con el Nene, or "Nene's" as they are often referred to, has THE BEST chicken I have ever had at any mexican restaurant EVER. Did you hear me? Cuz ill say it again if I have to. BEST CHICKEN EVER. So juicy and flavorful, my mouth is watering thinking about it. Carne Asada...fantastic. Sonoran Hot Dogs: most of the people Ive brought here who have also been to guero canelo (widely regarded as best sonoran hot dogs in town) have preferred Nene's take better. I have tried many of their items: burritos (best tortillas in town), caramelos (kinda like quesadillas with meat), Tortas (omfg delicious)...the list goes on and on. Salsa bar is extensive and well stocked. You could practically make a meal out of just that. All meals come with fresh grilled green onions from their mesquite grill in the back. At night, theres a guy who sells homemade empanadas in several dessert flavors that are a good deal and really really delicious. The food is cheap and good with only one exception in my mind. The soft tacos, while delicious, are pretty small and not quite worth the price IMO, considering the burritos are like 10 times the meat and only double the price. Sundays are hot dogs only, which i really wish they didnt do. And not going to lie, there has been once or twice that Ive rolled on over, and the cart was...gone! And my heart broke. Despite all that, I still give this place 5 stars. Read my other reviews, that should tell you something. Go here, for goodness sake. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

I have always been a bit wary of street food vendors, but everyone was telling me that I needed to try this place. I can happily say that I broke down and did, and now about 3 years later, I'm a frequent customer. Everything they cook just seems to be fresh and inviting. The hot dogs are phenomenal, the carne asada is never tough, and flavor explodes from just about everything. There's usually a bit of a wait to order and receive your food, but it is totally worth the wait. I have seen some Friday and Saturday nights where there are 20+ cars in the parking lot, but this never dissuades me from pulling in and having a go of it. Of everything on the menu, I would most recommend the caramelo adobado or the carne asada papancha. The latter is a sizeable baked potato stuffed to overflowing with cheese, meat, mushrooms and bacon. Has anything ever been better than that? I don't think so!

  • David R.

Best I have ever had for carne asada and Sonoran hot dogs. The crowd supports my statement. Great prices, quick service. It is a food truck in parking lot so realize that. The food is simply amazing. Go here, you will not be disappointed. I need to find a way to get back there.

Sonoran hot dogs are a unique southwestern delicacy. And apparently Aqui con el Nene in Tucson is one of THE places to find them. As an infrequent, yet regular visitor to Tucson - on account of my parents having moved down here about 5 years ago - I had yet to try this southwest original. Finally, I'm glad I came to el Nene to do it. Bacon-wrapped hot dog, pinto beans, sour cream, mustard, onion, toasted bun. A delicious, though foreign combination for this native Chicago-an who, though now living in San Francisco, has not seen the more radical bacon-wrapped "Mission dog" so...adorned. But it was tasty, and at $2.25 a steal. It's hard to make any sort of complaint because the product fits the place. Speaking of place, el Nene is situated in a parking lot next to a dive bar called the Rusty Nail. There is picnic-style seating beneath a tent to keep the harsher climes of Tucson from interrupting your meal, and shield the smorgis condiment buffet. Perfect. One small gripe: I can't help but wonder if the dog might have been more robust on a bun that was built of stronger stuff. Those wonder-bread type buns don't hold up terribly well on the grill. Perhaps only the sort of gripe a guy could make who grew up on dogs.

Believe the hype. This place has the goods! It's not your typical food truck, it's super authentic, and good-mood food. I will say this though-- get the Papancha! Especially carne asada. It's a nene's own creation, and you'll be craving it daily if you are a meat and potato fan. It's ooey gooey cheesey goodness with bacon musrooms and lots of carne asada on a baked potato it's glorious. I will tell you for fact that they have the best sonoran hot dog in AZ and they're cabeza tacos are fabulous too, but I don't even get those anymore their papancha is that good. The hot dog is worth the hype, especially when you get it toasted with cheese (chipilon style), but their cabeza tacos are very underated if you are looking for something new.

The differences between a Sonoran hotdog at Aqui Con El Nene and, say, BK are pretty minor. BK integrates mustard into their sautéed onions, while El Nene's toppings stand alone, and the buns might be slightly distinct. El Nene's caramelos, however, stand alone. The carne asada was perfectly juicy and flavorful, and the pork was better still. I don't think I've had a better Sonoran dog anywhere, and I am looking forward to trying one with cheese on my next trip. Also, I might just have heard the cabeza taco calling my name.

These people have it going on! Super efficient, fresh food, clean operation! I have been known to go there 3-4 times a day to grab a taco. But my all time Favorite, is a Grande Caramello with Carnita's! OMG...! Wash it down with an Apple soda and life is good. If they had 10 stars, I would give it to them.

I've been reading reviews for Nene, as me and my kids call it, for weeks now and I finally decided to pull the trigger. I'm not a "hot dog" kind of girl but really wanted to check it out. This was my very first Sonoran Hot Dog since moving to Tucson almost 20 years ago!!! Shush...I can hear your gasps now!! Well...I LOVED THEM!!! Can't go wrong with onions, tomatoes, beans and bacon on anything! The dogs were pretty small, much to my surprise, but quite tasty. I will definitely be eating Sonoran dogs from now on. My big beef...hahaha...is that the actual hot dog was so freakin' small! Looked like it possibly sat there for a while and dehydrated a bit. There were more toppings on my dog than dog! The "bun" or bolillo roll was melt-in-your mouth yummy. Fresh, soft and warm. I totally don't mind eating at truckster places of the side of the road so it was awesome! Learned to jump onto that wagon when I moved here! For those of you that do mind...put aside your pre-conceived notions and partake for goodness sake!!!! You will never get the best meal you've ever had if you don't!! For all my MN, CA, CO, OR, SC homeskillets, let me translate Sonoran Hot Dog for you: A bacon-wrapped hot dog shoved into a soft Mexican roll or bolillo roll (pronounced: bo lee yo roll), topped with pinto beans, chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeno sauce, cheese, mayonnaise (NO THANK YOU), ketchup and mustard. They usually come with a roasted chili on the side - sometimes even with roasted green onions. Easy to make at home!!!!

I just visited Aqui Con El Nene a couple of days ago during a visit to my aunt's house and I'm about ready to get on an airplane to fly back for a second visit. Living in Chicagoland, I've had hundreds (maybe thousands) of Chicago dogs and hadn't heard of a Sonoran dog until a few days ago. My AZ relatives raved about this place, so we had to check it out. I was a little skeptical at first when we pulled into the parking lot and saw the setup (trailer/grill/van), but once we got close enough to get a little aroma...I knew I was in for something special. For the uninitiated, the Sonoran dog is a hot dog wrapped in bacon and then grilled over an open flame (this alone was enough to hook me) and served in a bun with beans, mustard, mayo, tomatoes and onions. Wow. Just an explosion of flavors. My hat goes off to the owner(s)/cook(s). Outstanding. This rivals the best Chicago dogs I've had (Superdawg, Gene & Judes, Hot Doug's, etc.) and is probably in my all-time Top 3.

This humble and perhaps extra sketchy looking taco van brings it harder than Ke$ha parties. While I don't know exactly how hard that is, her music has led me to believe that is indeed VERY hard. I first grabbed a bite of a quesadilla from these fine folks. Melty, salty, delicious white cheese and a crisp tortilla... everything I could have hoped for. Not soon after I went to pick up my own meal. I strolled past the bootleg DVD salesman and placed an order for a Sonoran Hot Dog. A 5 minute wait was easily killed looking at movies and then I got to dive in. This little cart may not have made appearances on Man Vs. Food or Food Wars... but the next time I'm looking for a SHD, I'm certainly coming back here. The slightest little bit of extra flavor, cheese added if you choose, and it melts away perfectly. It's much better than it sounds, but I'm almost certain there was a dirty free for all in my mouth. Very luckily for the other visitors, I did not do as Ke$ha would have done and "take it off".

I was dragged out to come here by a friend, especially when I was just about to cook dinner! However I am glad I went, besides it was 5 mins away from my house. So when I arrived I was oh it's those food trucks let's see what they have to offer my taste buds. I ordered a carne asada burrito at first and after my friend saw I checked in on yelp, he text'd me saying I should get the sonorah dogs which is way better than BKs and Guero Canelo. I didn't believe him so I ordered it anyways to see if he was pulling my leg. I kid you not it was an explosion of deliciousness in my mouth! HOLY MOLY it was OMGood!! It must have been the way they saute the onions in as oppose of just putting fresh onions in. In the end I would have to agree that it was better than the two other competing restaurants! If it wasn't for my diet I would come here often! Maybe my next cheat day I'll come here again hehe!

Their hot dog (sonoran dog) is off the hook! The service was fast, the place was packed. They even have a full "bar" of side items such as salsa(s) and pickled/hot items. Really good stuff. The prices are fair and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to find. The directions from the Yelp page works really well. Let it also be noted that I did not stay and eat. I went there with the intention of doing take out. Hey, it's the desert, it's summer time and sitting out in it with ricketty table and chairs with the good 'ole fashion still of the day breeze just isn't what I had in mind while enjoying my dog. ;)

Three huzzahs for the Sonoran hot dog Aqui Con El Nene, you're my food truck king You are the lincoln to my log Your praises I will forever sing Spicy mustard balances mild mayo A combination everyone should taste With a soft CRUNCH of onions and diced tomato Pero, no me gusta frijoles And the tacos, don't get me started All meats are packed with bold flavor The only reason I am broken hearted Is cause Aqui Con El Nene is not my neighbor Perhaps I will pitch a tent in the parking lot And wait for them every day Free toppings and economical prices I have nothing negative to say

MIND: Seriously, a food truck? No way. STOMACH: Just give it a chance. It could make me happy. MIND: There is no way a food truck is going to make you happy. STOMACH: *grumbling* ...but it's cheap, and right around the corner. MIND: It was named a finalist in America's best hot dog contest... WTH, alright. (sitting under a canopy chomping away) (silence) MIND: We're sitting on the corner of a dirty street. STOMACH: Yeah, but check out that condiment cart--complimentary access to fresh cucumbers, radishes, limes, salsa, pico de gallo, and guac. MIND: Not a bad deal for a $2 Sonoran dog. WTH is a Sonoran dog anyway? STOMACH: Beans, tomatoes, onions, mayo... MIND: On a HOT DOG?! STOMACH: Yes on a hot dog. How about you quit overthinking everything? This $#*^ is amazing. MIND: The chicken bits in the taquitos are what look amazing. You know, those things only cost me $1.50 a piece. STOMACH: Dude, the chicken is the shiz. It's juicy, tender, and seasoned to #$%*&@ perfection. MIND: Well, if it's cheap and makes you happy, then I'm happy. STOMACH: ...nam nam nam...I'm officially Aqui Con El Nene's #1 fan...nam nam...numba one.

Best sonoran hot dog and caramelo cart in town. It's a bit of a drive for me, but always worth it. The tacos are also good, but no other place in Tucson even comes close to this wonderland of sonoran hot dog flavor. I always get the large caramelo, the small just is never enough. There's a salsa bar, blaring music, y muchas bebidas frias.

I read the reviews but also my father ended up bringing me here because I moved from PA back to the west coast. I was craving some good Mexican food (as always) and heard hot dog and mexican food in the same sentence, I was a little confused! I ended up coming here and loved the Sonoran dog with everything on it. They also have some decent carne asada tacos. Unfortunately I have had had better carne asada tacos from this little taco truck in Pasadena, CA. Places like this need to be shut down before I get a heart attack from its deliciousness.

We went here a few days after we were told to go to Guerro Canelo (which we found underwhelming). Aqui Con El Nene was infinitely better than GC. I ordered a papancha and a sonoran hot dog. I would order the same thing again if I can ever make it back. Really fantastic. The papancha, in particular, was amazing: delicious meat and bacon layered on top of a hot potato and a variety of other things.

WOW. Just wow. I've never had a Sonoran Dog before and a fabu Yelper's review just made me want to try it --so we did. Saturday night, we drive up and it's packed under the tent. Which we always take for a good sign. We step up to make an order and as soon as we step away from the window a line had magically appeared behind us, and it didn't let up the whole time we were there. This place is that good! Less than 5 minutes later the dogs are served up! They were already piled high but after taking one look at the condiment bar I could not resist piling it even higher with guacamole, pickled red onions, cheese and pico, and there was a lot more we didn't sample. I mean it was serious! The dogs were awesome! The buns were toasted and you could tell they use quality hot dogs. Now, while we're waiting for our dogs, I spot the Empanada guy chilling out at the side of the cart! This gentleman, like clockwork, every Saturday would knock on our door selling empanadas filled with various fruit at the apartment complex where we used to live. I had never bought from him when he came around and once we moved away I vowed the next time I saw him I would buy, and I did. Glad I did too; they were PUMPKIN filled. It was the perfect ending to an already satisfying dinner. I def planning on heading back to sample other menu items mmm.

Best Sonoran dog. Best Tacos. You can smell how amazing this place is if you drive past - and if you do drive past and don't turn around and stop here after smelling the grills of Aqui - you are probably dead inside. I haven't yet mustered up the courage to try the head tacos, but hope to get there soon. The hours are listed as 10-11 mon-thurs. and 10-1 fri-sat, but truthfully it's a little hit or miss whether this place will be there at night. Cash only.

OMG! Nirvana in a Bun! Wished I had greater capacity as I was only able to eat three (3) and had to separate each by about a ten minute wait in order to do that. Have it with everything and there isn't a taste like it anywhere. I know, I know - "mayonnaise on a Hot Dog?" That was my initial feeling when I first saw the list of condiments, but I was wrong. YES, mayonnaise on a Hot Dog! The steamed bun (I think "Bollo") with all the trimmings for around $2 is absolutely the best Hot Dog of any kind ever - NOT just Sonoran Hot Dogs. An I have eaten a few hot dogs. Served with a Roasted Chili (which I only ate one of so I could consume three fabulous dogs) this is really a taste sensation. The Condiment Cart under the tent is equally as fabulous, but if you order it with everything there will be no room for condiments, although my fellow dinners were eating their condiments off of a paper plate. Do NOT miss it, a few minutes off of the I 10. No hours posted, but take a chance!

First of all--props to Brett A. for reviewing this place. Second of all, great name! Trans. "Here With the Child." There is an epic, untold, story ring to it. The service is fast and furious and the dogs and tacos are outstanding. Ambiance in good weather is peaceful yet exciting--at least to a tourist like me. The most exciting thing about El Nene with me is seeing the meat being grilled out in the open air. El Nene is unlike the taco trucks I'm used to chasing. Slab after slab being cooked to perfection. The hot dogs are good, but not as good as BK's dog. Still a pretty decent contender for top dog prize though. The real winner for me was the Cabeza tacos. Moist and great, great flavor. In contrast, the Adobado was a little bland and dry. I think they may have been out and seasoned it on the spot though, not allowing it to marinate. So maybe it's usually a knockout? A great spot to catch a meal. There's a steady flow of clientele waiting for their order to be yelled out of the little window. The cook has got some lungs on him!

I've entered the pearly gates and heaven was a truck stop on the corner of Wetmore and Flowing Wells. Yeah, I heard all the hype and true to the hype it really stands out as a winner. After a morning of insane working out sweating out at least 2 lbs. of water, then just recouping from it. I decided to nag my husband to go for a late lunch at El Nene. Didn't take much persuasion to get him out of the comforts of a perfectly comfortable house whose temps ranged in the mid 70's. Knowing that we would be sitting under a tent eating Sonoran Dogs and Carne Asada Caramelos in triple digit numbers. The urge had spoken to me. Off we were. This place is now my number #1 place for our guilty pleasures. Spoke to the delightful young men who are the owners of the truck. I told them about Yelp and they had no idea what is was or how it worked. Told them they get some of the best write ups I've seen for this venue. The place is kept very clean and I'm sure it meets the standards set by the city. They have been at this spot for 7 years. Hoping they graduate to a real restaurant. Hey, but that would take the great ambiance that goes with the territory.

Honey, bring your novio to El Nene. We've had a second home in Tucson for six years and have passed by this truck countless times. Depending on the time of day, there's almost always a line snaking out into the parking lot consisting of businesswomen and men sweltering in three-piece suits, construction workers with their hard hats, families with little kids running around, and seniors who vary between impatience and the calm assurance that comes from knowing they're about to eat ambrosia. And, oh my goodness, every bite from this food truck is banquet-worthy. My husband hates Mexican food, but our daughter and son-in-law were in town so we made our first foray. The only regret is that I didn't do this six years ago. Between us, we had a variety of tacos, a burrito "mixto" and some quesadillas. Each was delicious and arrived in mere moments. There is a free-standing "shed" of sorts (to keep the wind and sun off) with picnic tables on the premises, an ice-table with every sort of add-on you can imagine -- salsas, sauces, chopped onions, tomatoes, cilantro, peppers, pickled carrots, etc. -- and coolers full of ice and Coca-Cola products for sale. While they do not serve alcohol, we asked if we could bring our own beer into the shed. The answer was a resounding "yes" as long as we poured it into cups, and they even supplied the cups free of charge. El Nene is at a major intersection, so access is easy. Parking is plentiful. This is "cash only" -- no credit cards or checks -- but the prices are so ridiculously reasonable that it shouldn't be a problem. Hmmmm ... I might have to go back for lunch tomorrow.

Its tricky to eat here sometimes as they seem to open when weathers good, busy nights, etc, but i take this street to get to work and it was surely worth the wait. I had a Karamelo and sonoran dogs, both being awesome. although it was no King of Karamelos, it was fresh, tasty, and largely portioned. The sonoran dogs, fricken perfection. And a huge plus is a fully stock the salsa bar, i didn't have to wait on any of the condiments. Another bomb taco truck for cheap quick fresh grub.

I go to this place every time I'm in Tucson, visiting my father. I was telling his Mexican caregiver about, "This truck place I go to..." and she immediately identified it as Aqui Con El Nene. She said it was the only place around to serve authentic Mexican food. I had stopped in the morning for a hot dog, then went back for dinner. The carmello and tacos were superb. I like the steak and chicken. I will visit this place at least once on every visit!

As for outdoor dining El Nene is spacious, and has a friendly vibe about it. The food is good and delivered quickly. Get the pork tacos.

I have been wanting to try this place for awhile and finally had a chance last week. Do not let the fact that this is a food truck with tables and awning dissuade you from going the food is good. I had the Carne Asada tacos and the Carne Asada caramelo which were good. My friend had the cabeza tacos which were also good. It was a little crowded but the food was served quickly. It is outside, so keep in mind the temperature when you go.They also have Sonoran hot dogs, but we decided to try them next time.

The best Sonoran hot dogs in town! Plus all kinds of other things, tacos, burros, and carmellos. Plus you gotta try the Pappanacha. A giant potato stuffed with either carne asada or chicken plus bacon, cheese and sour cream all for $4.95

Gives Guero Canelo a run for the money as best carne asada in town. The sonoran hotdog is the best I've had, the favors balanced and the whole thing doesn't fall apart. The tacos are great. What distinguishes this truck for me is the salsa bar: best in town. Nice variety, including marinated carrots. The salsas are excellent, fresher and more subtle than the competitors.

Hands down the best Sonoran Dogs in Tucson...it puts Guelo Canlo to shame. I have eaten here for years...from when they were just a hot dog cart. I tried pretty much everything on the menu. My favorites are the camelos and papanacha (a great baked potato covered in carne asada, beans etc.

The Sonoran dogs are great. But on your second visit, try a Carne asade Carmello. It will leave the others in the dust!

Best Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson. Super cheap and super delicious. Carmelos and Hot Dogs are the things to get here . They have soda in glass bottles and all the Mexican fixins (aguamole, salsa, radishes, cucumbers, lime, grilled onions). Seating is outdoor only. Located in the parking lot on the NW corner. Normally there until about midnight-ish. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED one of my favorite places in Tucson.

Better Sonoran dogs than BK and much better than Guero Canelo. It was a bit toasty sitting outside, but the food was well worth it!

We had been eyeing this place for a trip through Tucson ever since we saw it featured in a Rachael Ray magazine. Nene was one of the finalists for the best hot dog in America - had to try it! Nene is an instant classic. It's just a good 'ole Mexican lunch truck that sets up on the corner of Wetmore and Flowing Wells and looks to be a local legend. They have a menu that includes tacos, quesadillas, stuffed potatoes, and of course, the Sonoran hot dogs. It's really all about that hot dog here for us. It really was everything we hoped it would be - did not dissapoint. We also had a stuffed potato with cheese and steak which was quite delicious as well. Grab a little soda-pop out of the coolers and you're good to go. It was a nice touch to "dine-in" under the canopy with the locals watchin' the cars go by. Nene is a hidden gem...this boy cooks it up! I will no longer visit or drive through Tuscon without stopping by. Beware, however ....they do no set up on Sundays. Your heart will be broken if you gear yourself up to eat there on the Sabbath. Cash only.

Best Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson, hands down. Been eating here for years, but the secrets obviously out because they are always busy. The fam came to town and wanted to go to the big name place and I convinced them Nene's was better. They all agreed and I have converted everybody else who has been willing to take my advice and tried this place. The carne asada caramelos are also exceptional

This has become our Friday night must stop place. We have recently discovered Sonoran Hot Dogs as a result of one of those food shows. We have stopped for Sonoran dogs at many places in both Phoenix and Tucson and Aqui con El Nene is the best! We also love the Tacos and panachas, haven't tried a Tortas yet but they look good too. Sitting at the folding tables on the street corner adds a gritty urban flair and makes the meal unique. Add a Mexican Coke made with sugar the way it should be and you have a great meal and experience for 2 that wont cost much over $20!

This is one of those places you have cravings for when you haven't eaten there in a week or so. My favorite place for sonoran dogs in Tucson, so amazing. I love the fixings bar and the sodas in the glass bottles. Recently tried the papancha, which is a stuffed baked potato that was incredible. Really, this place is one of my favorite places to eat in town.

Sonoran Hot Dogs on the Northwest side of Tucson. Open-air eatery serving hot dogs, tacos n such out of a trailer and mobile grill. Covered pavilion style seating area with folding tables and chairs. They're located in the parking lot of the Rusty Nail. It's a neighborhood bar that lets El Nene store some of their equipment in back. They will set up on the corner around mid-morning and start preparing for lunch. So, if you happen to drive by early in the AM and don't see them, take another gander later in the day, they'll be there. Except Sundays, which is my only beef. Silly Catholics. I love this little street-side grill. Sonoran style dawgs n tacos served hot and fast! Here's a little tip for beginners: When you order, they will give you a post-it note that lists your hot dog order. The other items you order will not be on this slip of paper. They make the tacos n such in the trailer where you place your order and you'll receive those items when they call your name. Take the slip listing your hot dog order to the bro working the cooker on the other side of the pavilion. He'll have your dogs out in no time. He's quick! Second tip: Because they are so quick, I always space our orders out so we don't have a bunch of food staring at us while we're busy with a taco or the first round of hot dogs. If you order tacos AND hot dogs, I suggest you not turn your slip over to the bro until you have finished your tacos, or whatever else you have a hankerin for. Then you have a minute to relax and clean your palette with the bubbly and acidic burn of a cold Mexican coke before your dogs are ready. If you want mulitple dogs, order just enough for a first round, then go back and do it again. This method of only ordering what you will handle immediately, works well in all seasons. In the winter, your food will be fresh and hot. In the summer, you won't risk dumping your dog in the dirt while shewing flies away from the food that's waiting "on deck." I recently moved here from Austin and knew nothing about Sonoran Hot Dogs. I've had plenty of sidewalk dogs south of the border, bacon-wrapped and all, but these are unique and fantastic! In case you don't know, a Sonoran Dog is served bacon-wrapped in a large, soft bun amongst beans, onions (grilled AND fresh), chopped tomatoes, mayo, mustard and green sauce. They also include a tasty grilled white jalapeno on the side. Throw in a Mexican Coca-Cola or any of the Mexican sodas they have to offer, and you'll be right. The tacos are pretty darn good as long as you doctor 'em up by making a trip to the condiment shuttle that's usually parked in front of the mobile grill. It's filled with tasty offerings such as salsa (red, green, etc.), a variety of veggies and other sauces n stuff. I like to plate up some cucumbers and drizzle a little green sauce on top as a little appetizer.... and there is no charge for that, ladies and gentlemen. The condiment shuttle is free range! Yum. You could go to BK or El Guero Canelo for Sonoran Hot Dogs. I haven't been to BK's yet, but El Guero Canelo is not as handy for the NW siders, and it's LOUD. Plus, I like the "crust" factor at this street-side, portable fast-food joint. There is another open-air Hot Dog Joint on Grant near Stone in a Church parking lot. It's also good, excellent, in fact. But El Nene is just a few blocks from our neighborhood. Cheap, fast and tasty. Not open on Sundays gets four stars. UPDATE: Regarding my tip about ordering; No need to keep going back to order more dogs. If you just tell the Bro making your dogs to make one or two and hold off on making the rest, he's cool with that. He'll only need a nod of the head to get started making your remaining dogs.

I've only had the sonoran hotdogs, and they are indeed nothing but epic epic epic win. If you like sonoran hotdogs even a little, this place will send you over the top. Many people say el guero canelo is better - I strongly disagree. Buttered & grilled buns, and the toppings are always fresh and tasty. A must-try, a hotdog and a mexican coke (made the *right* way, w/ cane sugar) costs less than $375, and is quite a filling happy little lunch.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
