I'm looking forward to my annual trip to Tucson, and besides Agave Fest and Cinco de Mayo, I'm mostly looking forward to visiting Anita Street Market. I'm from Sacramento, and while we have a lot of Mexican markets, none compare to the Mexican markets in Tucson. I've mentioned how I miss Grande Tortilla Factory in my previous comments. Anita Street Market is such a treasure--I wonder if you people in Tucson recognize what you've got.

I really wanted to like this little place, when we drove up we could smell the tortillas and they may very well have good empanadas but my friend and I ordered a breakfast burrito and a breakfast taco. the flavors were good but I was expecting an actual taco. what we got was a burrito with a whole lot of flour tortilla very little filling, and a tiny little taco, that I swear, had about a tablespoon of eggs on it and a tablespoon of rice and a little bit of shredded cabbage and a few little cubes tomato. for this we paid about $5. I guess sometimes you get what you pay for and even less. The young man even pointed to the bigger package of tortillas when I asked him what tortilla it would be on. Not cool!

Holy salsa and tortilla heaven! This review is long over due, but it a total must. These cinco estrellas are really for the salsa and tortillas, while the food is tasty, it's not quite as good as just the tortillas and salsa, but perhaps I don't order the right things. If you're on the search for the best handmade flour tortillas in town, come here. The best tacos I've had at other restaurants in town have always been served with an Anita Street Market tortilla. This is a MUST for any Tucsonan. I love waiting in line and watching all the fresh orders of tortillas come out for customers. Yes, there is usually a wait...because they will make you a fresh batch of tortillas to take home. It's a thing of beauty. And the salsa...damn it's spicy! The red salsa is entirely chiltepin based! Every spicy bite is oh so very worth it. So, do yourself a favor and visit Anita.

Deserves the best tortilla in Tucson award, far and away. Paper thin flour goodness. I've tried hard to reproduce them in my kitchen, but no dice. We've stopped in nearly every day of our vacation because we are addicted to the tortillas. We also sampled the chips and the bottled Poblano hot sauces, as well as some tasty mild chorizo. So, so good. Please, go stop in now.

Excellent tortillas and a wide variety of very good take-out dishes at reasonable prices. Nothing really fancy, just dependably tasty comfort food.

This place is so good. I'm gonna have to go back for plenty of other things, but the birria is amazing, and (as everyone has already pointed out) the tortillas are the best I've had.

Seriously authentic. If you can, stop here. Every time I'm in Tucson I pick up a bag of the Anita's chips and red salsa, and a carne asada burro... Unless it's Tuesday when it's .99cent taco day. Some of the best red tamales in Tucson, and their tortillas can't be beat. Support Anita's.

  • John M.

A great choice for local flavor. For the vegetarians, the gorditas (small tortillas) made with cottage cheese instead of manteca are especially appealaing. For the omnivores, have the taco plate (ground beef) on Tuesday. Very fine tamales (pits in the olives of the beef tamales). Red salsa in the fridge to take home (perhaps better than the green for me). Worth a trip, also for the colorful neighborhood.

The homemade flour tortillas are so thin and light they are like tissue. They also have homemade corn tortillas, which I usually wouldn't just eat without turning into a taco or something, but the ones from here are just delish, with plenty of lime. The machaca is the real deal, dried beef that has been cooked with onions, garlic, tomato and peppers to re-jucify the meat and then it is turned into a yummy burrito. I've had the red chili, delicious, tender chunks of meat in a deep red, mildly spicy sauce that is mouth watering. They have several kinds of home made empanadas as well. A friend of mine gave me a bite of the cream cheese empanada, light and sweet with a perfectly golden crust. There is usually one well-organized person behind the counter, so even though there is often a line at lunch, it's not too much of a wait. I am so glad I work near this place-makes my belly very happy. I will go back till I've tried everything on the menu, then I will start all over again.

This little place serves really fine basic Mexican staples, as I knew them growing up. I've been twice. I picked up a dozen fresh flour tortillas and a couple of empanadas (strawberry and chocolate), then went back 3 days later to shoot the works and pick up a dozen more empanadas. I picked up pineapple, more strawberry and chocolate, blueberry and banana cream for $10. The tortillas and empanadas were obviously fresh, so I presume that everything else is likewise. Absolutely 5 star so far. Kudos to them and their neighbors for their tenacity in living between a freeway and the railroad tracks. They seriously must be a tight neighborhood!

Fantastic neighborhood gem of barrio Anita. You'll find authentic everything from the chorizo to the burros and Mexican cokes.

Since moving to Tucson, I have frequented Anita St Market at least twice per month because their flour tortillas here have changed my life. You go up to the counter and tell them what size tortilla you want and 10 seconds later, your hands are full of WARM, paper-thin goodness. Yes, they are thinner than most tortillas and sometimes have small holes in them. I primarily buy the medium-sized tortillas and use them to cook burritos. Since they're so thin, I typically use two tortillas and melt oaxaca cheese in between the layers. Yum. They also make great tortillas for quesadillas because they are not too heavy like some of the thicker tortillas around Tucson. They also make great gifts for out-of-towners. I go back to the East Coast often to visit my family and friends and every time on the way to the airport, I stop at Anita St Market and buy an obscene amount. They're always a hit. And sometimes, I'll buy the small flour tortillas and wrap them around strips of panela cheese. This makes a great breakfast... lunch... and dinner... I work out to earn this, I promise! I've also tried their salsas (the red one is SPIIIICY!), mild chorizo (great, but nothing mind-blowing), and their empanadas (2 dozen for $20 makes these a great bring-to-the-potluck food, try the chocolate and pumpkin ones!). Anita St Market is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, and the interior feels like a home. Word of warning that they're not open on Sundays and sometimes they close a little early if business is slow or they've run out of things. Service has always been prompt and friendly. I really have no reason to seek out other tortilla places in Tucson. I've tried to branch out just to see what their is and I'm always disappointed!

Random Mexican market & restaurant/deli shop located smack dab in the middle of a suburban neighborhood! yelpers say Anita turns out the BEST TORTILLAS in Tucson and I can see why! those fluffy tortillas are bomb! ---Red chile burro: nice & spicy! unfortunately there were a few pieces if fat in my burrito and the salsa was watery but that tortilla was spot on I didn't get to try them but they also sell empanadas NOTE: They take credit card

Voz de la guitarra mía al despertar la mañana, Quiere cantar su alegría a mi tierra mexicana. Yo le canto a sus volcanes, a sus praderas y flores, que son como talismanes, del amor de mis amores. Heading east on Speedway Blvd. from the frontage road off I-10 there is a railroad bridge and a small road that Y's off to the right. Anita Street is right off that Y, into the barrio, barking dogs in front yards and paleta cart bells. Yeah yeah yeah the tortillas are the bomb. The salsa is supreme. The fresh made empanadas are glorious. The chimichangas...fried sexy love. But me? I dig the machaca. Squeeze of fresh lime juice and salsa. ¡MACHACA! If Anita Street Market's machaca was a grindhouse film, Danny Trejo would star. It's that deliciously cool. The market side has outstanding chorizo (hot and mild), queso blanco and really delicious ceviche. Anita Street is small, with a tiny outside dining patio. Holiday time is tortilla time so call ahead, be patient, be prepared to wait...and remember you're in someone else's neighborhood. I love Anita Street and you will too.

  • Jennie S.

Excellent tortillas...I make special trips to get them. The fresh corn tortillas are perfect for making dorado style tacos or chips as they are thinner and fry up crisp as opposed the the thicker ones that end up too chewy when fried. This place is a Tucson treasure.

  • Ray L.

Much has been said about the Anita Street Market, which is awesome and wonderful and very worth a visit. The tortillas are delicious and they make a very respectable empanada. Across the board, their food is decent. Spectacular? No. But good and equitably priced, too. I've had some average tamales, but the tacos are usually a little above average and often boast well-seasoned meats. Nothing has ever jumped out and commanded my palette's full attention, but nothing has failed, either. Mostly, you go to Anita Street because it's a tiny house in an obscure area full of nice people. Then you sit in the small, disheveled patio and enjoy the sunshine and the neighborhood. The food, though good, is secondary to the experience.

If you find yourself blessed to be in Tucson, do yourself the greatest favor and head to Anita's! Fresh everything handmade with love by Anita's family! The red salsa is the best I've ever had, packed full of flavor and spice!!!!! The chorizo is divine and the fresh tortillas and chips made daily are super!!!! Plus bottled hot sauce to take home is a major plus in my book! Anita told me her favorite hot sauce is the Salsa Ranchera. She also informed me she's been in business for 30 years! So much love and respect for the blessings of food they are offering to the community!

  • Thomas M.

The name is descriptive as this really is just a corner market that slings mexican food out the back. Good spot to grab a burrito. Machaca is good, although it's the dry style and I prefer the wetter style (e.g. Tania's 33).

This place has anything from breakfast, lunch to specialty items. If you want the best homemade tortillas in Tucson this is the place for you. I love the fact that I can get a homemade whole wheat tortillas and have them taste amazing and not artificial. The breakfast burritos, salsa, pastries are top notch

  • Brad W.

Not every hidden gem is a good place to eat and you can't really trust the people of Tucson to know good food really. Yes, they sell tortillas, but being paper thin is not really a plus in my eyes. I bought a dozen at 4 bucks to take home and you have to just about use three of them to keep all the toppings inside. They were also out of Prickly Pear tortillas and had no pastry that day due to someone getting shot according to the pleasant owner. My main order was the breakfast burrito and I added red chile which was the cause of my large load of diarrehea/food poisoning about 7 hours later. The red chile has beef chunks and something was wrong with that batch obviously as the river of red turned into a river of brown later. The potatoes inside the burrito were not seasoned and just chunks of russets and of course the thing fell apart because of the tortillas thinness. Overall, you should hide from this hidden gem. The fresh jalapeno salsa was good by the way.

Their food is authenticly excellent and deliciously accented by their homemade tortillas. I always enjoy their outdoor patio (when it isn't summer at least). It can get pretty crowded on weekends though which makes for a long food wait.

OMG whoever makes the tortillas in the back - I love you! These are THE BEST tortillas in town, hands down. Sorry suegra.

  • John M.

5 stars for tortillas, 3-4 for burritos, 4-5 for empanadas. Gorditas: amazing. I asked if they had any fresh and the guy brought a bag some the back which was piping hot. They completely blew me away. Red chile burrito: Okay, but the chili-powder flavor was overpowering and the meat was a bit gristly. Breakfast burrito with chorizo: Good. Their chorizo also has a lot of chili-powder in it, FYI. Empanadas: Very good. Go early before they run out.

One of best places in town for fresh tortillas and empanadas. Love the family and again tortillas are warm when you get them!!! Just the best!

  • Jennifer L.

Found out about the place since it's been voted best tortillas by the Tucson Weekly. Voters were absolutely dead on! Been going faithfully ever since. Tortillas are made just like how I remember my grandmother and her two sisters used to make theirs every Sunday. Thin, stretchy and delicious. Have also sampled their burritos, empanadas, chorizo and queso fresco. All have been awesome.

    (5)
  • P O.

Their tortillas are amazing. Super thin and super tasty. They are delicious warm. I also love their green salsa which burns my mouth but I keep eating anyway. The red salsa was too much for me because I am a lightweight when it comes to heat. I've also had their cooked foods a few times and not been disappointed.

Try the tortillas!. They list cottage cheese as an ingredient - maybe that's why they're so soft and flavorful.

    (5)
  • Jesse L.

The best mexican food i have had in Tucson so far. They are a bit off the beaten path but it serves to the authenticity. We will be getting our tortillas from here for now on even though they are a bit thin.

Fresh Tortillas, Awesome Burritos, and a mini mart in one location. This place is classic Tucson and I recommend everyone visit this place once.

Whenever I see Mission tortillas in a grocery store in Tucson, I get confused. Why are these here? Are people in Tucson actually buying them? Why on earth would anyone do that? We are the city of good tortillas, and the best are those from Anita Street Market. Alejandro's is second, in my opinion, and you can find them more easily at various stores. But it's worth the drive to Anita Street Market! Make sure to buy the special ones made with cottage cheese (only available in the small size). If they aren't warm, ask for warm ones, and you'll probably get them. I like to bring a little hand cooler so I can arrive home with hot tortillas for dinner. WOW. Don't forget to eat one in the car. I've also tried their empanadas--there are about a million different flavors, from apricot to key lime. Some were better than others. The real star of the show is the tortillas. This place has been family-owned for 25 years, according to the Tucson Weekly entry for Best Tortillas. Now raise your right hand, and repeat after me. "I promise, as a self-respecting Tucsonan, never to eat chain grocery store tortillas ever again..."

Wonderful tortillas, hot out of the oven. Wonderful tortillas! Did I say wonderful tortillas?

  • Lisa C.

The best gorditas on earth. There is nothing like picking up a dozen gorditas warm in the bag and ripping into them as soon as you are back in the car. My kids are obsessed and my parents. These make the best soft tacos on earth. Even my dog begs for them. The gorditas are my favorite but I also love the extra large flour tortillas for cheese crisps. Seriously amazing. You can call ahead and have them save you how ever many dozen you need. You can thank me later.

Yum! If you've ever been to Anita's then you know what I am talking about. This simple little store has some of the best food in Tucson, simple and delicious. The birria is amazing and I love their tortillas which range in size from small (taco size) to large (burro size). The large are a little thin so I can't use them to make breakfast burritos (which I make in bulk and freeze) but hey are still tasty. You can't freeze the small tortillas because they are made with cottage cheese (we were informed of this when we were stocking up on tortillas) but they really don't stay around long anyway so this has never been a problem. The salsa is spicy but doesn't sacrifice flavor. We don't get over here as often as we'd like and have learned to call ahead to reserve our tortillas because they are often sold out by the time we drive by on our way home from work.

The tortillas have righteously earned their "Best in Tucson" moniker! Excellent breakfast burritos, and the staff is completely open to special ingredients requests.

Hands down my favorite mexican market in Arizona. I live in Phoenix and have family in Tucson and whenever I make a trip down to T-Town, I HAVE to stop at Anita's St. Delicious tortillas, horchata is wonderful, empanadas are so fresh and have many different flavors. They also have fresh "meals" that they will make like burritos, eggs, etc. The people that work there are very nice and I would recommend Anita's St. to anyone and everyone!

  • Emily G.

Most of the people I know in Tucson have never even been into Barrio Anita! But after they taste Anita's tortillas they all go looking for them. They are by far the best tortilla's in Tucson. And they are super cheap. They also sell salsas and food to go. The salsa is always fresh and very spicy. When I send people to Anita's I tell them it looks like someone's house. Some people get scared away, but where I am from if you have to go into someone's house to buy something, its usually delicious. At Anita's you are always greeted with a smile, I love the older lady that works there- she knows my order and is super friendly.

Aside from having the best tortillas in town, this place also serves up amazing meals. Take food to go or enjoy it in their sweet little garden patio. My favorite are the dish tacos, made with roasted green chiles. Yum!

  • Melissa J.

Best tortillas ever. Hands down. Just go there. You will never buy a tasteless tortilla from the grocery store ever again. Their food is good too, but they aren't super efficient about making it and helping customers at the same time. So if you want a burrito you're probably going to wait, and also if you just want tortillas and somebody else in line wants a burrito, you're also going to wait. It doesn't matter though, the tortillas are so so so so so good. So still 5 stars!

  • Corey D.

HOLY TORTILLAS! So these puppies make a guest appearance every Tuesday at Fresh, and after Kevin explained why it's the best tortilla in Tucson, I knew they'd be perfect for a Mexican fiesta I was throwing. AND THEY WERE. They have small corn and small, medium and large tortillas. I think today was busier than is typical, but if you're worried about them having your size, call first and place an order. Cases up front are fill of empanadas, popular flavors and a few intriguing onces. Maybe when I am eating sugar again I'll grab one. And until then I'll have sweet loving dreams about them.

I grew up in Tucson and am a proud Pueblo graduate (my wife, too), spent ten years out of state teaching college kids and another eight years in Phoenix for my sins. One of the best things about coming back to Tucson was the Anita Street Market's tortillas. They are the real deal. Thin and tasty. Try them and you will never buy from a super market again. Some of the tortilla ladies who go from business to business or sell out front of the grocery stores are as good, but Anita Street has the advantage of being health code compliant. ( : The chorizo is also very good. At least, the spicy is; I have no idea about the mild. Fry it up with potatoes, onions and chiles for Sunday breakfast (don't forget the scrambled eggs and corn tortillas) and you won't eat again until dinner. Me gusta!

We read about this restaurant in the Arizona Highways Magazine and decided to try it out when we visited Tucson. We could not have agreed more with the magazine. We had the carne asada burros and tacos. They were both very good. We enjoyed a apple empanada (sp?) for desert. The tortillas were so good, we took a doz. with us. We will visit Anita's again.

Wow!!!! Let me tell u this place is amazing ... I've been craving a capirotada and was recommended here and man was it delicious !!!! At first I was scared lol .. But it was great. The tortillas and the chorizo HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT BEST IN TUCSON.

I never thought I'd be in a love triangle. But here I am, Anita Street Market, YELP and me. I love ASM because of the great food and service. I love YELP because reading a friend's review reminded me it's been too long since I've visited ASM. I usually get the gorditas made with cottage cheese. I have to buy 2 packages because I eat one on the way home. They have a good selection of cheese and other essentials for a Mexican fiesta. I'm a big fusion cuisine nut so I put mid or far east seasoned stuff with the stuff I get from ASM! YUM!

My wife and I are relatively new to Tucson and the GPS almost got us lost on the way in. The building is completely unassuming and looks like it's been here for quite a while. Little did I know I had walked into a treasure trove of delicious food and super friendly staff. I cannot wait to go back and sample some more of the fresh tortillas and tasty food. It tastes like I'm eating at a friends house, when his old grandma is cooking. Highly recommended! We had the red Chile burro and carne asada burrito.

oh my gosh! BEST Tortillas I've ever tasted! My Sergeant brought them back to work and they were still piping hot and fresh. Lets just say that bag was my lunch.!!!! YUM!

Pssst. Hey. Heard of the Anita Street Market? I didn't think so. Why would you have? More importantly, why SHOULD you have? Let me tell you. The green salsa. It is unlike any salsa I've ever had anywhere else. Ever. Okay, well... Papalotes, in San Francisco, is pretty up there, too, but San Francisco, this ain't, my yelponian friends. You'll eat the whole thing in one sitting. Or, most of it at least. The flavor and spice is perfectly balanced. It's a little on the hot side - my nose runs if I eat a lot, but damn it's good. Mexican friends of mine, doubtful of this Tucson raised white boy have reluctantly tasted it at my house and said themselves, "Wow, that IS amazing salsa!" They have great burritos, too. Small, yes, but good. They bake fresh empanadas in all sorts of flavors. People love their tortillas, too. When you walk in you'll wonder what it is they even do. There's not much in there. And, you most likely won't feel like hanging around, either. But, trust me - there's most likely a few tubs of green salsa left in the fridge. It's less than $5. Buy it. Good luck finding the place. ;)

This place has been on my to-do list for quite some time. I love to support small businesses, and I think that quaint places smack dab in the middle of Tucson barrios can be really awesome. I had "liked" their facebook page as a reminder that I needed to go there, and the other day they posted around lunch time that they had a fresh batch of green corn tamales...my favorite! As I had dental work done the day before, I needed something soft, so I trecked over there. From the outside, the place looks like a run down house. The sign outside is the only give away that it isn't a residence, but they did have a patio to the side. I stepped inside and it reminded me of a little market in mexico. they had only certain things and it was very basic. They had a refrigerator with some different chorizos and cheeses, just enough to be able to sell out within the day. I think the next time we make chorizo I will stop by there to get it fresh. I got a lunch special with two green corn tamales, rice and beans. I also got a bottle of dr. pepper, and a dozen medium tortillas, and my total was around $10.00. Not bad! The tortillas were so hot, they had just made them and I couldn't help trying one in the car on my way back to work. We enjoyed them later that night with some beans and chicken. I would go back and try more menu items, but I don't think it would be the place to go if your looking for groceries.

There are a few places which meet the criteria of neighborhood legend. This is the place. The tortillas are homemade style and so is the food. The red chile beef is outstanding and the green chile meat is top notch! I had picky In laws in from Texas and brought home tortillas a quart of red & green chile. I came home a few hours later and heard nothing but accolades from the Texas visitors! The chorizo in the fridge is a must for the morning with eggs. Be local... Go here!

Every time I visit my mom's side of the family in Tucson, I make sure to stop by this place and get flour tortillas and pumpkin empanadas. They are the best. Everyone here asks for them and loves them. "Don't forget to bring me some Tucson tortillas" is what I always hear. Los Angeles' flour tortillas are way too thick, too chewy and always super white in color. You cant even taste the tortilla. The best part is the Tucson Airport TSA agent at the X-ray machine trying to figure out what I have in my suitcase. The latin TSA agent always has to explain what it is I have. No matter how much I offer them an empanada, and even when they really want one, they can't take it, as per their rules. It was a challenge carrying 6 dozen frozen "Tucson" tamales, 8 dozen "Tucson" tortillas, and two dozen Anita pumpkin empanadas. Those of you who think a 'tamale is a tamale' need to understand that different areas make them different. You can always taste a southern Arizona/Sonora style tamale versus a "Jalisco" Mexican style tamale. Los Angeles is loaded with everything 'estilo Jalisco. ZZzzzzzzz. My family was happy with the eight dozen tortillas I brought them. Next time, I will drive the eight hours to Tucson and load my truck with as many Tucson tortillas and Tucson tamales as I can!!! I miss Tucson every time I leave and sometimes I wonder why I even live in Los Angeles.

Hands down, the BEST flour tortillas in Tucson... and that is saying something. I used to buy my tortillas from La Indita, but they stopped selling them and changed their recipe (no longer as good) leaving Anita Street Market in a class of their own. The tortillas are fresh (still hot), simple, and perfect with rich flavor. I might also add that all the flour tortillas are vegan.. (not true for the gorditas). Local food made by local residents that make anything bought at the supermarkets taste like stale curtains. I always buy more than I need because as soon as I step outside the door I'm opening the bag to eat 2 or 3 right there. I would buy these before flying to Oakland as gifts. Forget the postcard, send a package of these overnight. Seriously great tortillas. Don't pass them up. Owners Mario and Grace Soto: "When we first started, we had only sixty five dollars. The landlord gave us two months free rent to get us started. The tortillas were made by hand. My wife and my daughter would come at six o'clock in the morning to make the tortillas, and that was just a few dozen. We sold ten to fifteen dozen a day. Then, later, there were 20, 30, 40 dozen in a day. Then 300 dozen a day, Monday through Thursday. Friday and Saturday, more production. We worked very hard! "My uncles and I made a little machine and we started using it. A couple of years later, someone sold me some more equipment and I paid a little at a time, what I could, and I paid it all."

Atmosphere/location: I don't know AZ at all but my brother took me here; he did warn me that the area is not the greatest place, this place is basically a small grocery store in a residential area with a small patio seating. Food: tried the shredded beef burrito (can't remember the name), the flavor was good but the texture was a bit dry for me; I tasted the carne asada burrito which I liked better because it was juicier; also had a bit of chorizo burrito which was my favorite, slightly spicy and very tasty; quesadilla was good too; their salsa was okay for me; took empanadas home and had them later, yummy; the best part about this place was the home-made flour tortilla, fresh and warm; you can buy them to take home which we did and made breakfast burrito the next morning. Service: friendly. I wouldn't mind going back and try other items when I'm back in Tucson.

Oh my freaking gosh these tortillas were so good. How could something so thin and floppy be so delicious? How could something so flimsy-feeling not fall apart at the slightest provocation? How could flour, water, vegetable shortening and salt produce such a rich flavor? The world may never know. But luckily we can leave the knowing to these fine people and direct our focus to the eating part -- which, we must eventually admit, is the better part anyway. If you have never tried these tortillas, then GO NOW.

Anita's red salsa - spiciest salsa I've ever eaten. Bright red and tons of seeds and some added dragon fire.
