Enter restaurant ... Me: (Taking a deep breath) Niece: What are you doing? Me: Smelling. I can always smell a good Chinese restaurant. Let's see. My senses detect soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, ginger but very light on the garlic, onions, and sesame seed oil. Niece: You can smell all those ingredients? Me: Yes. I was taught traditional Chinese cooking and can tell you if a restaurant is good or not. (We both order the same dinner special ... Beef Lo Mein) After dinner ... Niece: How was it auntie? Me: Noodles were a bit over-cooked. Egg drop soup was bland. Egg rolls were okay. Overall, it's okay. Would I return? Not as long as I can cook this at home.

They didn't do anything wrong but everything was so mediocre. Decor inside is drab and despite being full of people it was oddly quiet... some quiet background music or something may have helped, it felt like we were eating in a library. I was afraid to talk any louder than a very quiet whisper to my dining companions. I ordered dinner b: sweet and sour shrimp with hot and sour soup and spring rolls. Spring rolls were alright, they tasted like they had been bought from Costco or something, edible but not something I'd expect from a restaurant. Shrimp had a weird texture... chewy and almost gristle-y, odd. Batter was weird and soggy. I can't justify giving a one-star review because as I said, they didn't do anything wrong, the food just wasn't that good.

Only good things to say! We stopped in on a whim traveling through - best General Tso's chicken I've ever had - the Mongolian Beef was also delicious. Despite being very busy, we were greeted very promptly and served with a smile. Very good experience - great price - I will be back :-)

For your sake, don't eat here. The stories I could tell you about this place. If you want your bowels intact and your stomach feeling fine, I would go elsewhere. It is not a great place to eat. The kitchen is dirty, the place is not amazing, and the food is so oily you can feel it coming out of your pores. I had a friend who worked there and the horror stories she would tell. Avoid this place.

Awesome restaurant. Went in for lunch and ordered our food, within 10 minutes both dishes came to the table and were completely amazing. I can't believe anyone has had a bad visit here. I order online and dine in and every time they impress me with the speed and amazing food. Definitely worth any price and yet they are super affordable for a college student.

This is the second time I have been here, however it is the first time I ordered off the Chinese menu, which wasn't present the first time I came here about 3 years ago. Decor wise, it is a very interesting building and looks like a small barn at first glance which gives the perception that it is a rustic place. However Inside the decor provides the feel of an authentic Chinese restaurant which runs contrary to its outward appearance. But really, what's more important is the food. As for the food, while the offerings on the menu were definitely authentic, the food didn't taste really authentic, and seemed to be catered more to an Americanized version of Chinese food than otherwise. No biggie, but just be warned that this is not the most authentic tasting. My companion and I ordered a 2 person chicken meal which came with noodles and a chicken broth sauce. It was ok, but it was a tad too spicy for me. However i am a wimp when it comes to spicy stuff, and this was as mild as they come, so if you like spicy food, you will probably enjoy this The country style tofu on the other hand, was very delicious, and there was an ample amount of tofu and vegetables which I liked very much. The sauce was a tad too thick and starchy to me, however that doesn't take away from its excellence. As for the service, it was ok. The restaurant had a few patrons scattered around in it, but it wasn't crowded, and there seemed to be two women waiting tables. Our server was polite and prompt when it came to our orders, however she did not come around to refill our waters and needed to be prompted to do so. She seemed preoccupied with other things apart from serving our table Overall it was a pretty decent experience, but I wouldn't consciously seek it out again unless here was no other option.

This place definitely has some of the best Chinese lunch specials in town. The service is friendly and quiet, and I definitely enjoy the food and the complimentary hot tea. I typically order delivery from this location and split an entire entree (orange chicken is my favorite) along with crab cheese wontons with my boyfriend - which equates to less than $20 after the delivery fee and a tip! I would recommend myself to anyone who wants some tasty and affordable Chinese food.

Average Chinese restaurant. I ordered the chicken dish that was okay with noodles and chicken. My sister ordered szch chicken. This was not one of my favorite Chinese restaurant Overall ok.

Whenever I head up to Flagstaff to visit my sister, I only ask for one thing: CHINA GARDEN. China Garden's food reminds me of Chinese food back in the mid-west (and, according to my sister's fiance, a New Yorker, it's reminiscent of NY Chinese food as well). There are quite a few vegetarian options, my favorite being the veggie chow mein. Their food is perfect to order in, and the delivery guys are always at our door within 45 minutes - most of the time, even less. As for going to China Garden, the ambiance isn't the best, but I go for the food, so I don't complain. The service is always great, though! Surprisingly, the only thing I don't like about China Garden? Their tofu. It was the least exciting part of my entire meal. My boyfriend and I (both vegetarians) ordered the country tofu and general tsao's, and we were both severely disappointed.

I got take out here when confined without a vehicle. The delivery was fast. The food was basic and only lightly spiced for chinese - if this is good or bad would depend on your palate, I guess. I'm a spice and garlic guy. Recipes were the basic Americanized Chinese we're all familiar with, the stuff was fresh, not over or under cooked, and it came really fast. No complaints. It gets a solid 3 star review - this is a "reliable option" and I liked my meal, it just didn't stand out from the many other chinese places that use the same playbook.

The service was fine and the food was OK. I'm coming from SoCal where I've been spoiled. I ordered the 8 treasure delight with brown sauce. I finished it and thought it was OK given that I am passing through town. The tired decor and ambience take it down a notch. Portions are generous. Pricing was not on the cheap side. I will try another place next time.

Don't go there. There is one waitress here who really has an attitude. She almost ruined the dinner since she was shouting at us. This restaurant is the worst.

I have had nothing but excellent food here ... been eating here for six years. Their soups are light and fresh, and many of their dishes are very healthy. A QUIET place to eat without loud music and always very clean. Tea is very good as well. In six years I have asked to have food cooked over twice and they obliged with no question at all. I find this place simple yet relaxing. And food is consistent!!!

This was basically one of my food groups when I lived here. We called it "China Barn" due to the odd shape of the building. No, it's not gourmet Chinese food, but it's still good. And the student menu was really a boon. The service was (almost always) friendly here as well. It was usually quiet, although on an odd night it would get REALLY crowded and service would back up like crazy; this was the exception though. Good vegetarian options, lots of ways with tofu (I can't get enough of their tofu).

Ordered some fried rice, found a staple in my mouth from the box, the ends were not even crimped. Clearly the staple fell into the to-go boxes. Called to see what they would do and they called me a liar, then hung up. Called back and demanded at least an apology, which took them 15 minutes to get around to. Unacceptable, very poor customer service and food.

  • Kevin O.

I order from here alot. Not the greatest food you will even have but I never get a bad meal. Either delivery or dine is is awesome. The tea is really good when you dine in. If you need some take out this place is great. Average time for delivery is 30 minutes.

Absolutely a piece shiiit !. Don't know what part of China they came from, Look and taste like some ten year old girl learning how to cook for the first time.

I don't usually like Chinese food because of the uber amounts of salt they add, the saucy swimming stuff and the MSG. This place is different. I would get the seafood soup here, and it was excellent and kind of reminded me of my mom's homemade seafood soup. The salinity was just right, the shrimp and other seafood made all the difference in the taste, and the broth didn't give me a headache (which means it most likely didn't have MSG). I can't speak for other dishes here as I have never ordered anything else.

I'm not fond of the food at China Garden, for one. In fact, their lemon chicken tastes like McDonald's chicken nuggets. For two, I once found a really creepy black hair in my gross food. Then, I ordered meatless wontons and they when I got all 10 of them home I found there was NOTHING in them at all. No filling. If that's what a meatless wontons are there, it would have been nice of them to notify me. They do have an NAU student menu, which is nice. It doesn't help if all their food is gross, though. The place also looks like a barn. Strange.

Delivers to Flagstaff area hotels, nice service but the food is pretty bland. I tried the won ton soup, shrimp mu su, and shrimp with lobster sauce. The shrimp mu su comes with fried sauce and hoisan sauce but everything was quite bland. The hotel clerk said she favored this chinese restaurant over the other one, Hot Wok that also delivers in the area. She wasn't chinese, so I guess my expectations of the food is different. Generous enough with the shrimp portions and I appreciate the fact that they delivered but I ate some of it and threw the rest out which isn't something I would usually do. The menu has the general stuff, plus 9 tofu dishes and lunch specials, $5-6 between 11 and 3pm with soup and rice. The various dishes range from $7-12.

Great family restaurant, amazing food and most important reasonable prices. Best fried tofu I've ever had. The hostess and waitress were very friendly, and it seemed like a family business. Skipped half a day of Grand Canyon to come back to the red rocks and to China Garden Restaurant. Definitely contributes to the charm that Flagstaff has.

  • Thomas W.

The staff here is very friendly, and helpful. The food is not worth a visit. Giving them two stars is very generous as I truly liked the owners and staff. When I first walked in my initial reaction was that I should walk out and not stay. I should trust my instincts.

I have personally never gotten sick from China Garden food, but the other reviews on here scare me a little! I LOVE their crab wontons and the shrimp is pretty good as well. Very crispy. I almost always get delivery and am usually pleased with my purchase. The one time I was in the restaurant though, I was really turned off by the decor. It's just kind of shabby I guess.

So far, the best Chinese in Flagstaff. Of course none of the places in Flagstaff compare to places down in the valley or in Southern California but it was ok. I was disappointed with their Mapo Tofu dish. Very bland and the flavoring sucked. But their beef and broccoli and Sizzling rice soup was very good.

  • Sira C.

I ordered take out for Chinese New Year. I went with one order of fried dumplings and the garlic chicken. The dumplings were very good, tender and tasty. The garlic chicken wasn't as flavorful as I like, but as far as Chinese food in Flagstaff goes, this is pretty good.

I don't know why the rest these reviewers didn't like it but I do. The Mongolian Beef is very good, I get it medium spicy with noodles. Yum! The owners are very nice. Everything I've gotten there has been tasty. The map on here has it shown way down Milton and on the wrong side. Because this one sits next to the Taco Bell near Plaza Dr. They don't spend any money on the decor but, I'm just going for lunch and don't care what it looks like. Also, I've never had any bland food if you want it spicy they can make it spicy

Some places go up and down in cycles and this one is no exception during the 15+ years that I've been eating there and right now they are on a great up cycle. I've had Chinese food all over the states and through Taiwan and Hong Kong. This is GREAT Chinese cuisine. Fresh and flavorful. Friendly staff for dine-in or take-out. Quick service for phone in and pick up or delivery. Or you can order on-line. Okay, so the outside of the building is kinda dumpy, but the place is clean, the service is good, and the food is very good.

My husband and I order from this place through GrubHub and we love it. The food tastes great, the delivery is quick, and the delivery guys are always nice. We have eaten here multiple times and we have not had issues with it upsetting our stomachs etc. Don't pass this place up! It's delicious Americanized Chinese food and we will continue to order from these guys!! If you have not tried the GrubHub deal, check it out. It's pretty convenient and awesome.

pretty okay, I wanted to come here because it looked like a barn plus it is next to Starbucks! The wontons were creamy it was a nice difference from other places. I had the sesame ckn, it came with broccoli. It was okay, the good part it had no breading. My friend had the curry ckn he said was okay and it had some big chucks. I liked that the mom, dad and I think daughter were visible In the restaurant, to me it makes it feel more home(y).

Service was good-the staff was welcoming and food was out very quickly. The food was great! This place has the best Chinese food in Flagstaff and all for a reasonable price. Don't let the old building fool you, try it!

The first time I was here I did take out. While I was waiting, I began talking to the owner about how long they had been open. He was really charming and nice it! I went home and had some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten! I craved it ever since so I decided to stop in for dinner with my friend. As soon as we sat down, our waitresses brought us a full teapot. We loved it! Once again, the food was amazing! Would definitely recommended!!!

Been coming here for several years. It's not a bad place. Price is good. Large portion of food. Food is decent. Place needs remodeling. Nothing has changed since my first visit. New paint wouldn't hurt. They usually have a decent amount of visitors when we eat there. Bad thing I can think of is a dirty restroom.

After a 7 hour drive from Los Angeles we stopped in Flagstaff for the night and I was looking forward to a warm meal delivered to our hotel room. Unfortunately it was almost inedible. Everything, even the walnut shrimp and tofu was deep fried, and everything was swimming in oil and either bland or overly sweet.

I am surprised to see the bad reviews, we had a wonderful experience with China Garden! We had a group of twelve in our home we were renting near Snowbowl. We called China Garden and asked if they would be willing to deliver all the way out here and they said of course! We gave them our large, complicated order and they showed up about 45 minutes later as promised. The delivery gentleman was very nice and waited for us to check our entire order. Everything was correct, and the food was hot and delicious! Very nice people, great service and great food - we will definitely be a repeat customer :-)

My boyfriend and I just left this restaurant and are really concerned about food poisoning so we started reading the yelp reviews to see if anyone had it. The service was fast..too fast. I'm pretty sure they just put our food in the microwave. Mine was lukewarm and we had a hair in our fried rice. And something was definitely off about the shrimp in our chow mein. Also, when we asked the waitress what hot and sour soup was she said it was "hot and then sour." Haha. Definitely won't be going back and I hope we don't get food poisoning.

I really don't know what the one star reviews are on about. The food was fine and the staff friendly. There was a Chinese family dining there when we went. One assumes they have an insight into which Chinese restaurants are good. My wife had the lemon chicken and I had the veggie foo yong. Both were cooked and hot.

  • Janette C.

I had this delivered to my hotel while in Flagstaff for work. Ordering through the yelp ap made it convenient. Delivery was fast. Broccoli and chicken was good. Lots of broccoli. Egg rolls where mushy. Crab rangoons were delicious. I would most likely recommend them. Nothing outstanding but definitely your typical Chinese take out/delivery.

Years ago my husband worked in the Financial District of San Francisco and went to lunch a couple of times a week in Chinatown. His favorite meal? Beef Chow Fun with Green Vegetable (usually bok choy and green onion). This was complimented with BBQ Pork Noodle Soup. Regular as rain. One rainy afternoon in Flagstaff we spotted the China Garden and my husband say "turn here". His intuition was bang on! The owners father was the cook and wouldn't you know it, knew exactly what my husband wanted for dinner! After the meal my husband went back to visit with the chef and compliment him for the absolute best Chow Fun he'd ever had!! Seriously, the China Garden may not have the atmosphere for some, but if you want really excellent Chinese food this has to be the place in Flagstaff!!!

The food here made me and my roommate really sick. The food was bland. Flagstaff is really lacking in good Chinese food.

Run for the hills if you care about your health, the dinning experience and the service attitude! Me and my friends were having dinner there, trying out their stir-fried chicken dish, but surprisingly some parts of the chicken are ice-cold! This is so unhappy for people trying to have warm food in the winter. However this is not the end, we would like to work out a solution nicely with the restaurant, but their attitude is so horrible that they didn't even admit this is their fault referencing to their own word "This is quite normal if there are some parts not well done, and different people will have different opinions on whether it's well-done or not", they even threaten to call the police if we keep arguing. Wth, we are the one eating cold food and paying for it, and been treated like some impertinence people, but god knows, we are the customers. I'll let your guys to judge their service principle and the way they dealt with their fault, besides, the taste of the food is not good, the space is so cramped which they don't even have a whole table that can afford 10 people. In a word, we are not going to this restaurant ever again and suggest everyone to avoid it cause it will ruin your day and whatever pleasant state you have before you get into that horrible little house.

After reading a friend's status last night on Facebook about ordering Chinese delivery I decided that's what I wanted for dinner. I've had some bad Chinese take-out experiences in Flag so I was skeptical but figured it was worth a shot. I ordered the bbq pork chow mein and to my surprise it came with a free side of white or fried rice! The delivery total was $11 but I paid $15 for tip. The meal itself was good! There was tons of pork which were tender and had a nice flavor. It wasn't overloaded with cabbage, either. The fried rice was average. I'll save it for another day since I'm not a huge rice person. Overall I would order from here again!

  • Kayla C.

We ordered delivery and the service was very fast. The food, however, tasted and looked like a frozen dinner. I'm pretty sure the "egg rolls" are the frozen spring rolls you can buy in bulk from Costco. The sesame chicken and orange beef were edible but that's about it.

    (1)
  • Kate C.

Despite the questionable reviews on Yelp, I chose not to heed your warnings. How silly. I should know by now to always trust Yelp. My expectations on Chinese delivery are usually set pretty low. This was far worse than I could have been prepared for. I don't know how else to describe it aside from really, really bad. The Egg Foo Yong was incredibly bland, filled with frozen vegetables and drowning in flavorless, brown sauce. The crab rangoon were mushy and cold. My husband didn't hate his meal, but it certainly wasn't worth $30.

I was in Flagstaff for the Labor Day weekend and craving some good Asian food. China Garden was exactly what I was looking for. I ordered a tofu & vegetable dish that I absolutely went crazy over. It had fried tofu with an assortment of mushrooms, water chestnuts, carrot, and zucchini. There were also some pieces of tomato in the dish which I did not enjoy too much. My friends really enjoyed the sesame chicken and fried rice. My white rice wasn't anything special though, and it wasn't as soft as I would've liked. Overall, my main dish was so delicious I would definitely eat here again if I'm ever in Flagstaff.

Bland chicken and terrible fried rice: would have been better off going to Panda Express and for "Chinese" food. Would not go back ever.

Every experience at china garden has been nothing but great. When I'm in Flag, I'm there at least twice a month. It's so tasty and pretty cheap -- they offer an NAU student discount menu too!

Ever go against your gut and say "I know it looks lousy from the outside, but what the heck?" Well that's what I did here. Sad to say my gut was right. First off the vibe and decor are just appallingly energy zapping. It's like a personal energy vortex. Ever know one of those annoying people who always have a smile on their face? Send 'em here, problem solved. I was really hungry though, so I ordered 3 separate dishes. Unfortunately, they all tasted like the same dish. Bland and uninspired. Panda up the street is much better (yikes!) and half the price. Sadly, this was much closer to a 1 star than 3, but they didn't do anything horribly wrong (just nothing right) so I will spare the 1 star review.

The worst Chinese restaurant in AZ. One of our dishes was not quite done. When complained, they even refused to apologize at first. Ruined my day, very unhappy.

Never never never go this place! The food in this restaurant is cold and tastes bad. The owner of this restaurant has very unfriendly attitude toward customers. Do not try to argue with them, you will not receive apology.

The service was good and the food was mediocre. My daughter ordered sesame chicken and it was served cold. The waitress warmed it up in the microwave and brought it back to the table. My hubby had Eight Treasures which was good. I had shrimp in lobster sauce which was C-. The hot and sour soup was good and the egg rolls were average.

I first went to this place in 2007 and it was extremely good. Food was tasty and flavorful. Now it seems like new owners have taken over but it is still ok. Not as good but still as good.

I had been here once before for dine in and thoroughly enjoyed the good and service. My girlfriend and I decided to order delivery tonight because we both work early and didn't want to go out to eat. We ordered at 8:00 and were quoted a delivery time of 40 min. Around 9:00 we called the restaurant to see where our order was and we were told its on its way. About 9:20 we called back again to check and we were told they had a new delivery driver and he was lost. I live in a small neighborhood off Lake Mary Rd that is extremely easy to find. An hour and 30 minutes after the order was placed the driver finally shows up, and without a pen for us to sign the credit card receipt. We then dig into the food and discover that it is all barely lukewarm and un-edible. We place another call to the restaurant to voice our displeasure and are met with the response "eat the food or we will come back and pick it up." Not exactly inspiring to their service. We inform them that we have no interest in the food and they can come pick it up along with bringing us a copy of the refund of our meal. The owner shows up 10 min later (while our food took an hour and a half) without a refund receipt. He says he'll take the good back and then bring a refund receipt back to us. By this time it is 9:45 pm and the owner has been arguing with us on my front porch for 5 min blaming our cold food on his delivery driver. We tell him not to come back without a receipt. Long story short, I will never spend another dime here and will be disputing the charges with my bank. Hopefully this was helpful.

This should be a negative star review but Yelp won't allow it. Possibly the worst Chinese food I have ever tried to eat. Husband and I went for dinner. I ordered iced water with lemon and he ordered a coke. For dinner, we each ordered Dinner A with wonton soup and steamed rice. Mine was sesame chicken and his was orange chicken. The soup was lukewarm and bland. The fried wonton appetizer was mystery meat, overcooked in old oil. The veggie egg roll was decent. Then came the main course. The steamed rice was over cooked but not gummy, as it should have been. The chicken was not recognizable as such. The flavor on both was bad, but the meat quality was atrocious. I couldn't eat even one third of the small portion without feeling like I was going to vomit at the table. When the server brought the bill, I discovered I was charged for water with lemon at the same rate as my husband's coke. That was ludicrous. Then we discovered they had overcharged us by over $10 on the total. While they did correct that error, it was just the final straw on what was the worst meal I've had the displeasure of experiencing in as long as I can remember. I am just hoping I won't need a stomach pumping before the night is over. Very disappointed as several people had personally recommended this place to us. :(

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
