    Great place for a drink or great food! If you're in Flagstaff, and you should try to get there in July, check out this charming spot near north campus NAU. Amazing drinks at the bar, and great people too! We just stopped in for a quick iced tea and left after having a very relaxing couple of drinks and some juicy steak skewers for a snack. I highly recommend if you want a completely different experience than the college bars in Flag. Try one of their specialty drinks listed at the bar.....great prices and refreshing!

    There was four of us eating here. There were simply too many issues with the food and service to comment about. You would be better off going to Denny's. I feel bad for the servers because orders were taking so long to get out and a lot, and I mean a lot of orders were being sent back. Some people got up and walked out. I almost felt like we were being filmed on a practical joke show. I'm sure this place will be out of business soon because you just can't make a business survive like this.

    I had the worst meal I've ever tasted at 1899. I had the charred scallops and shrimp, which were marinated in some... sauce, I'm reluctant to call it a sauce because it was hardly edible. It tasted like chemicals, very bitter and didn't compliment the seafood at all. I couldn't finish it, and I'm known to hunker down and finish whatever food I've ordered even if I'm not the biggest fan of it. I gave 1899 two stars instead of the one star the food deserved because of their impressive drink selection, and attentive servers, but despite this, I'll never go back.

    Nice looking place, but I paid $30 for a Ribeye Steak that was mediocre at best. To their defense, they were serving two very large groups of people so that could have played a part. The cut of meat was very thin and the served it with a baked potato and green beens. They also serve the plate with a side of steak sauce which I actually needed which is no bueno. On the upside, the service was good and the ambience was nice.

    I have been coming to this place since it opened in 2011. I'll be honest, many of the reviews here are correct. This place was not very good when I first started coming here. While I thought the menu was ok, the customer service was not, and thus, I only came here to celebrate the end of each semester with friends. However, in the 4 years I have been coming here, I must say that it has improved quite a bit, especially under the new chef. They have a seasonal menu which changes often apart from some of their mainstays including the burgers, steak and my personal favorite, gouda mac and cheese. As for everything else, the decor is quite nice, and contains a fireplace near the entrance where you can wait for your order if its busy, the customer service is iffy at times, which is likely due to the fact that students work there, and the food is overpriced. I think the cuts of steak here are not the best quality, but that is probably because the university has a contract that stipulates that Sodexo provide all of the food here. Still it is a decent place to visit, and I would give it a recommendation for first time visitors.

    I was in Flagstaff for a few hours this past Tuesday and was absolutely starving, I don't even think it was until 4pm that I ate lunch! I had asked one of my customers where to go after I'd looked up a few things on yelp and he had suggested here. I was a bit weary of going to a place where college students can eat with their meal card but I will say I was quite impressed. Because I came during the happy hour time I immediately went for their edamame, literally some of the best edamame I've ever eaten! I think it was boiled and then tossed with olive oil, it had a slight oily taste to it and then sprinkled with rock salt, very good and the huge bowl was only $2 on happy hour. For my main food I ordered 2 sides, I couldn't pin point what I wanted so I had a side of the salmon which usually comes on the salads and a side of the asparagus and both were truly delicious! I had a really nice server who gave me a few refills on my diet coke and let me know about all of their most popular menu items. The place is nice inside, clean, trendy, they offer delicious food, great drinks and have a fabulous happy hour menu!

    We arrived in Flagstaff and went here at the recommendation of our hotel staff. This place definitely did not disappoint. I had the Reuben and I would say it was one of the best I've had! My partner had an Angus Burger that was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic!!

    Vegetarian selections are very minimal and overpriced, but they are pretty delicious. Great place to go and use the remainder of your meal plan money if it's close to the end of the semester. The desserts are fantastic. The service was good, not the best I've had but not the worst either. Good for groups.

    After a drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, and back down into Flagstaff, we were starving and had just parked and checked into the Drury Inn just across the street from this restaurant. I was a little hesitant to take a chance on the place given the 3-star average on Yelp, but we were too tired and unmotivated to go anywhere else in Flagstaff and had to leave early the next morning to continue our road trip, so we were about ready to eat anything. All of the food was good. They serve warm rolls with a variety of flavored butters which were definitely worth trying. For an entree, I had the summer sausage plus a side of mashed potatoes. The summer sausages themselves were well-spiced and perfectly cooked; very tasty. The sausages were served resting on a bed of macaroni and sauteed vegetables, which wasn't anything too special but helped calm my growling stomach. The side of mashed potatoes was definitely worth ordering - lots of flavor, though I'm afraid to speculate regarding how many calories that one little side provided. My wife had the fish and chips and enjoyed them. I tasted the fish and it was the perfect ratio of batter to fish, lightly fried, not too greasy. Service was friendly. We were seated promptly (despite no reservation on a Friday evening) and we were well taken care of by our server. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and at the right temperature. No complaints with regard to service! Overall: Although we chose to eat here based primarily on convenience, we were pleasantly surprised to have a very positive dining experience and would actually recommend this to others passing through the area.

    Had a party of four that were tired after a daylong trip to the canyon. This place was across the street from the hotel so we decided to give it a try. Nope. Two had the Scallops that were over-cooked and included some sort of funky corn cake. Another had Elk Osso Buco which was tough, and finally a Ribeye which was way over seasoned. Overall a forgettable dining experience highlighted by an annoying guitar / singer in the corner. Would not visit again.

    My husband and I had a nice experience at this restaurant, across from The Drury Inn. Chris, the bartender, took good care of us - asked how our drinks were and doctored my Cosmo which, initially, was on the sweet side. Salads and burgers were really good. there was a local guitarist playing and music really enhanced the experienced. I'd visit again if I'm in the area.

    So as if I didn't love bread and butter enough, 1899 bar and grill had to throw in cilantro/garlic and prickley pear flavored butter... They are to die for! We were greeted immediately and directed to our table. The hostess was very friendly and shared some of the favorites people rave about. Our server was Katie and she was attentive and kind, and a pleasure to have for our dining experience. I ordered the filet and my boyfriend had the ribeye, both were cooked perfectly and the signature steak sauce complemented them well. The cheesy mash potatoes are delicious, however the absolute most wonderful part was the Mac and cheese... Oh my goodness, it is dynamite!! We ordered the cookies and cream cheesecake and nutmeg creme brûlée for desert, both were scrumptious. We found 1899 to be a fantastic place with a very unique atmosphere. We enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend it.

    I ordered the Fall House Salad: Baby spinach tossed with apple cider vinaigrette and topped with Asian pears, goat cheese, sun-dried cranberries, and candied walnuts but I wanted some more protein so I added chicken. I do wish they had "add" options on the menu for the salads to make them more of a meal. The salad was fresh and delightful. I thought the portion was perfect and the price was reasonable. The service was outstanding. The server brought a refill for my drink without having to ask. She was attentive without being overly so. I was having a business luncheon and so the noise level concerned me. But it didn't need to because i felt like we were the only ones there even with a full restaurant. Next time I'm in the area I would definitely eat there again.

    Hosted a fundraising event here on Sunday and the staff and management couldn't have been nicer! They really went out of their way to be accommodating as we rearranged all the tables and seating and made requests for food placement. Speaking of food, it was excellent. Ribs were tender and juicy, wings spicey, and potato croquettes were a huge hit. It was a very successful day, all the guests were happy, and we made a good amount for our non-profit. Thanks 1899 for being great community partners!

    We made a reservation via Open Table and were seated immediately. Restaurant was moderately busy but service was very prompt, polite, & attentive. We ordered Calamari to start, one of us had a cup of their poblano soup which ha a definite bite to it l. The other had a small kale salad - perfectly light & tasty. We had a mixed-up plate of steak, sausage, ribs, garlic mashed potatoes, and cauliflower. Also a half rack of pork ribs with their Mac & cheese and cauliflower. Vegetables were perfectly done, not mushy, bbq sauce was tangy & sweet, meats were all delicious, Mac & cheese was great as were the garlic potatoes. We shared a bourbon pecan pie slice for dessert and coffee. No complaints. Pricing was competitive. We will return!

    The food and the service are always good at 1899. The servers are very attentive, and even if they don't know everything, they sure are happy to go find answers for you. This time I was there with my wife and parents. I had the special risotto (apple and cabernet with italian sausage), which was excellent. The rest of our party's entrees were very good as well (salmon with a cream sauce, baked trout and the ribs). I like the ambience, the location on campus, and the service. I'll definitely be back again.

    Food is extremely over priced and mediocre at best . The macaroni and cheese tastes like nothing so I recommend staying away from that. All in all the service was great and the manager was very attentive when my boyfriends salmon came out over cooked and his rice was ice cold. Will I ever go back? No.

    We were thrilled to find out this restaurant was in walking distance from our hotel. They had live music the night we went there and we found the ambience warm and inviting. My husband and I shared a salad and the roasted chicken. The salad was good, but not amazing, the roasted chicken was delicious that we would come back just for that dish again. They do give you bread with 2 types of housemade butter, which my husband said was tasty. The restaurant is actually located on the NAU campus which is a bit unusual seeing it was more of an upscale restaurant...just unexpected, but a pleasant surprise.

    We didn't know this was in the campus of NAU. The lightning was cold and the food was generally poor, but the staff was very accommodating and warm. We ordered calamari and artichoke dip as apps and I had the hanger steak for supper. Maybe we got an off night, as a lot of the reviews are super positive, but I wouldn't return.

    Came here because it is literally outside the door to our hotel. Alex at the bar was super nice and all in all the service was really good. My issue is with the food. YUCK! I had the southwest side salad and that was fine, but my entree, the blackened shrimp and scallops was disgusting. The chopped the tails off of these huge shrimp (unpeeled and just icky) and just completely cooked them down to mush. The scallops were cooked just slightly better but the sauce they were served in, plus the dauphinois potatoes (scalloped) were just a gross gloppy mess on my plate. Because I had not eaten in almost 8 hours (road trip from LA) I did not complain about the dinner to the wait staff and just ate what I could. They do offer a neat spread of housemade butters with their (I am guessing) foccatia (sp) bread but some of our bread seemed to be stale. This is a very expensive restaurant and I have no plans of returning. EVER. There are a zillion other choices around Northern Arizona University so you won't starve while visiting here.

    My wife and I were vacationing in Flagstaff from the San Jose, CA area. We were celebrating our anniversary and looking for a great restaurant in the Flagstaff area. We read the reviews and thought that we were taking a risk. We went ahead and had dinner and we are glad we did. I had the Rib Eye Steak and it was very well prepared. My wife had fish, and her food was excellent. The drinks were excellent and the dessert, we had the cheesecake was delightful. We liked the atmosphere, although, a bit noisy. This restaurant looks like a favorite to young professionals. If you are looking for a special meal to celebrate a big event, I would highly recommend 1899 Bar and Grill.

    We had mid-day lunch to celebrate graduation on 12/12/14. The service was spectacular. We had a trainee and seasoned server, both of which were friendly, timely and attentive. One of the servers recognized the special needs of one of the elderly members of our party and was so kind and patient which was very much appreciated. The food was good though the temperature was cool rather than hot. We asked for soup to be reheated and were brought a brand new bowl instead which is great service. I love the concept of bringing college students into the industry the way NAU has done with this restaurant. I would recommend it to anyone and will likely be back again.

    After a day at Snowbowl, my kids were in the hot tub at the hotel across the street so I sat down at the bar to relax with a glass of wine. I was greeted by a friendly waitress who informed me she was not the bartender but gave me the wine list - that guy continued to ignore me for the next 5 minutes. After some forced eye contact, he took my order which he then forgot about. I reminded him as he was tinkering with some dirty dishes and finally got my wine. I was able to order a charcuterie board which was pretty good despite the very unappetizing conversation between some fellow patrons beside me at the bar. They were loud and crass with F-bombs flowing freely. The manager (I assumed by his "supervisory" demeanor) did not seem to mind. The kids were on their way to join me so I took a booth at the back of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the menu was extensive. The bread with the 3 butters was great! The kids had the ribs - ok and the mac & cheese - amazing. My Sriracha chicken lettuce wraps were inedible. All in all, an OK experience since the kids were not exposed to the crude bar patrons. Will not go back.

    MY NEWEST MOST FAVORITE PLACE IN FLAGSTAFF BAR NONE! This place has only been open for 2 weeks. It is actually on the Northern Arizona University campus directly across from the Drury Inn. The decor is ver contemporary.... Warm and well lit. There is a full bar. We were very casually dressed, which was not a problem. The underlying theme seems to be "local ingredients". That includes the produce and the beer and wine selections. The bread basket comes with three different butters...including a prickly pear butter!! So different, so good! I had the Lobster Gruyere Cavatappi....and there was a LOT of lobster in my dish. And I really feel it was fairly priced at $18.95 for the amount of food. Then there is the desserts! OMG! We had the beignet with roasted banana gelato, and we had the chocolate ganache cake which was HUGE and delicious. Service is wonderful! I HIGHLY recommend you give "1899" a try if you are up in Flagstaff. I really want this place to be around for a while.

    Nice atmosphere but their burger buns are dry, dry, dry. Must include sawdust. Side lettuce was wilted and limp--not suitable for a burger. Jalapeño bottle caps are great.

    Our experience at the 1899 Restaurant was probably my WORST ever. First the bread brought to our table was very dry and no where near fresh. The steak I ordered was quite tough and not prepared well at all. The potatoes that came with the meal were acceptable but the presentation, though interesting, made the portion very small. My wife's meal, though it seemed more edible then mine according to her, still left a lot to be desired. We originally wanted dessert with our meal but after learning that several of the choices on the menu that we were interested in were not actually available we decided to just skip dessert..... The poor quality of our experience was made worse by the stiff and mechanical service of the wait staff in their efforts to be cordial to us. Though we really wanted too like this place a lot and enjoy our dinning experience, we were never able to feel comfortable or welcome. What makes me view this dining disaster as my worst experience ever, was however not actually the poor meal or in-hospitable service but in the added insult that came when the management refused to allow us to use an $80 gift certificate to pay for our complete meal. Just days earlier we had received an $80 gift certificate from our children for Christmas. They purchased it at the restaurant for the full $80 just days before they gave it to us. Since we did not order desert or drinks our meal came to only $50 plus tax. When we presented the gift certificate as payment we were promptly informed that we could NOT USE THE CERTIFICATE TO PAY THE SALES TAX nor could any portion of it be used to leave a TIP for the server. In addition we were also clearly informed that they could NOT refund to us any of the unused portion of our gift certificate or use it at another time either. I attempted to politely explain to those present at the register that since our children had just purchased the dang certificate as a gift for us, at a cost to them of $80 cash, expecting us to pay more money for the tax and tip was clearly unreasonable. The fact that they had already received more than the price of the pathetic meals we had just eaten, days in advance, did not for some reason help the persons at register see that their stated policy was both illogical and ludicrous. They did not seem to care that they were clearly over charging us for our meals Anyway they insisted that in spite of the facts as I have explained them, I still owed them money for the tax. Finally realizing the people at the front could not be reasoned with I decided to simply cut my losses and give them the additional money to cover the taxes. I even left a few dollars extra for a small tip because I did not wish the server in this case to suffer as drastically as we had from such an absurd management policy. The bottom line here folks is that my below average $50 dinner actually cost me, or at least cost me and my kids, $90 so it seems clear to me that we got robbed at the 1899 restaurant. The server though not great also got short changed in the deal because while I normally leave at least a 20% tip, in this case I could not bring myself to leaving more then the minimum 15% I REMAIN ONE UNHAPPY CUSTOMER THAT WILL NOT BE BACK!!!!!!!

    Terrible. Ranks #2 in my all-time worst dining experiences. Bitzee's Mama in Glendale will always hold #1. The pepper and gouda soup was edible, but oddly thick, not creamy and soupy and I felt the gouda was overwhelmed. The brisket, omigosh, Did the cook pull the bottom of his shoe off and cook it? It was tough and chewy and swimming in BBQ sauce. Never had such an inedible brisket. Wait and hostess staff missing that crisp efficiency and cutomer service edge you would expect in a higher end restaurant. Chef Robert Irvine needs to do the Impossible here, they can skip the dining renovation and start looking for a true chef and drill the staff. Methinks that may be part of the problem, the better reviews for this place are from last year, closer to its opening. Did the exec chef who designed the menu and opened the restaurant leave???

    The place is very nice and clean. The service was good, but they did a little to much overselling of the lack-luster food. Also the prices are to expensive. I ordered the blackened scallops and shrimp for dinner and I guess blackened means burnt to them because that is what it was! Almost inedible actually. My friend got the chicken pasta and said it had no flavor and drowned it with salt. The only gleaming ray of light for this place is the apple pie which was very good.

    Being new I figured sure lets give it a try. The vibe isnide is great and it is a very welcoming and cozy atmosphere. I ordered a steak and it was cooked perfectly, had that melt in your mouth texture which is exactly what i expected. I only had a bite of the chicken breast that my fellow dining companion ordered and being one of the easies food items to ruin i was somewhat expecting it to be dry and rubbery as you find at most restaurants but again it was very very moist and perfect. the bread came with a variety of butter's for spreading as well as a wine and vinegar mixture. The prickly pear butter was very tasty. All around a perfect dining experience. The service was very pleasant and quick. I will return again!

    This is a great restaurant on the very North end of NAU campus. It's pretty high end dining so it's an occasion type place for me. I took my wife there for our anniversary and we had a great dinner. They have a very nice sitting area in front of a large fireplace with an absolutely stunning large antique copper hood. There is also a full bar with sitting as well and we were told they are expanding out an outdoor sitting area/patio. Overall great place to get dinner. You many have to use the Drury Inn parking garage if the spaces out front are full but they validate your ticket so it's free. There is a lot of neat history associated with the building and NAU as well.

    What great surprise. Brand-new restaurant on a university campus run by students. Great meal and they handled everything well despite having a few unavoidable kinks with a brand-new venture (not all the lights were working properly the night we were there). They had great customer service and I wasn't expecting a restaurant like this in Flagstaff (no offense Flagstaff). Maybe we can come by again on our next trip to the Grand Canyon.

    Have been to this place twice..each time with very satisfactory results. The lunch menu is mainly but not entirely sandwiches on the highest order. The prices are not any higher than anywhere else. The supper is a bit higher but the menu is extensive and superb. Heartily recommend and will myself go back soon.

    Well, I was staying at a hotel across the street and this fancy-looking restaurant got our attention, mostly by adverts around. The facade looks nice and fits the NAU campus. Also, not much to complain about the interior. However, the service and cooks look to be all campus students and that was so obvious in the quality of the servers and food we got on the table. For this kind of restaurant I would expect more professionals...the lamb I got was mostly non-edible. Chewy, almost raw, bleh. They also serve free starter - a little bread with 3 kinds of butter. The bread was good, however, the butter wasn't very special. If you want to have a beer, wine and few starts, this might be a good place for a small group or a couple. However, don't go there because of the food. You will be disappointed. You can get much better, authentic and tasty food in smaller restaurants in the town. For half the price...

    The food is really amazing. The service is friendly, and the decor is hip. It's a really great place for date-night and lunch with the girls! The one thing that could be improved is bread baskets with lunch! I would love to have their delicious bread with lunch. From what I have ordered the many times that I have been there, it seems that they can't go wrong! Can't wait to try the bar out for my 21st birthday!

    High quality and delicious food with a great wine list and a full bar. Outdoor seating in the back (facing the campus, including the oldest building on the campus for which the restaurant's named for) is comfortable with a relaxed ambiance. Also very friendly service and extremely reasonable prices! We finished everything we ordered down to the last bite. Dog-friendly patio, too!

    ***Review 100, Yay me!*** For my 100th review I would like to review possibly the most underrated restaurant in Flagstaff, 1899. This place is located on campus right behind Drury. I went here on Saturday with a friend and was amazed. We were quoted a 40 minute wait so we decided to just hang out at the bar. The wait actually ended up being only about 20 minutes and the bar keeper gave us good conversation. I ordered the braised beef and I had it on top of mashed potatoes instead of the linguini; it was perfectly seasoned and tender, literally melted in my mouth! For dessert I had the molten lava cake with the gelato and it was so rich and decadent. During the meal the floor manager even came over and introduced himself as well as the chef. This place is ran by the NAU hotel and restaurant management students who are little rough around the edges but "hey" they are in training. This place has five star ambiance and I believe the prices are high for Flagstaff but accurately priced for the quality of service and food that is attained. I can easily see this place being a big hit in the future... PS you may see a lot of students here because they accept NAU meal card money; but don't let that scare you away. Also, reservations are a good idea on the weekend.

    I have been to 1899 on a few occasions as an NAU student. I have had mixed experiences. When I have gone for lunch, the food has been good, but the service has been very slow. When I went for dinner, my food was pretty much inedible and was incredibly expensive. Only go on an occasion when you have at least an hour for lunch.

    Awful, just awful. Was here for a work event and was served severely undercooked steak. I'm not a picky meat eater and can do rare if need be, but this was raw. Every time you come here it's just one more surprise of how bad everything is. My last visit was indeed the last visit.

    Great location and decor inside but lacking in other areas. The wait staff are very friendly but very slow and inattentive, kept having to flag our waitress down (took almost 20 minutes for a lemon bar). The bread and butter are great, pesto butter was my favorite. I had the roasted red pepper soup with Gouda which was great, should have stopped there. I had had the spaghetti squash on a previous visit and had really liked it , but it was salty and I hardly ate any, my waitress didn't even ask why. My firiends were similarly disappointed with their meals, unfortunately I don't think I'll be back.

    this place is real good me and the wife herd about this place from around town and we gave it a try now I dont like it when you order a new york and the butcher didnt even trim off all the fat. Not this place the meat is nicely trim and they know how to cook meat its hard to get a medrare steak but these guys can do it I'm going back.

    New Flagstaff restaurant exceeds our expectations. We just heard about this new restaurant on the NAU Campus and decided to celebrate our anniversary dining at my Alma Mater. The decor was very upscale, especially for little ol' Flagstaff. The wait staff was VERY attentive. The restaurant is run through the NAU College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Pretty imprssive for a place run by a bunch of college kids. Our waitress, Lisa, did a wonderful job of attending to our needs. We had a wonderful dining experience with one small glitch, more on the later. The couple we were with had been here before. My friend has a gluten intolerance and the gluten free menu selections are extensive. We ordered a bottle of Irony Pinot Noir from Monterrey that was just right for our meal. Our friends started with the chophouse salad which they shared. It was quite large and it would be nice if the menu offered a smaller portioned version for a single diner. My wife and I both ordered the lobster leek bisque which was also quite good although the roasted leeks were a bit over powering. For the main course our friends had the bacon wrapped loin lamb and the smoked achiote chicken both of which were quite good. I had an excellent beef tenderloin (medium rare) and my wife had the western pork porterhouse. Her dish was the one small glitch. She didn't register the pork part of the description and thought she had ordered a porterhouse steak, imagine her surprise. It was excellent none the less. Alas we chose to fore go dessert but the selections looked quite tempting. We will definitely be coming back.

    Poor service, bad food and the decor was stolen from PF Chang's. Appetizers arrived before the wine, scallops smelled rotten, steaks were flavorless, and our group went home very disappointed. The restaurant does have a nice beer and wine list featuring local selections.

    I had high hopes for this place~no bueno! My boyfriend & I are from California we had a long drive & decided to have a nice dinner read some reviews on YELP, we wanted to support this restaurant for several reasons, but honestly wish we never ate there. Appetizer-brushetta decent Wine & Beer-good Prime Rib horrible- more fat than meat on it so disgusting Lobster Pasta-so-so We asked the server to tell the manager & chef that we were not happy with our dinner especially with the Prime Rib. Supposedly it was a house cut, terrible. but never once the manager talked to us about our dinner. We had lunch two days later @ Cracker Barrel & the prime rib was 100% tastier & the cost for the two meals we had there was the cost for our horrible prime rib @ 1899. I truly hope the manager reads the reviews here on YELP to help his restaurant.

    Oh the joys of an overpriced steak house on a college campus. If you are a non-student, you are spending $26 out of your own pocket on steak and asparagus. But wait, why are there students sitting next to you? Because the place takes "dining dollars," part of the NAU meal plan, so students can actually pay with their parents money! After realizing this, every freshman boy thinks he is clever and takes a girl on a date here. And the food is good, and she is mildly impressed until he pulls out his NAU id to pay. I have heard mixed reviews about this place ("the chocolate cake is good!" vs. "the chocolate cake was awful!") so I guess it's a hit-and-miss experience. It's run by the hotel and restaurant management students, so its a pretty cool hands-on learning experience for them, even if that means customers are the test subjects. I have enjoyed the food and atmosphere every time I've gone so far, but I would think it was overpriced if I wasn't one of those crazy kids charging it to their NAU account. I know it gets crowded on weekends so make a reservation!

It's located in the revamped north building on the Northern Arizona University campus but still retains a sense of history that makes things interesting. Sure, some of the main dishes need a little work on balancing between tastes, but the price is right and the atmosphere awesome. Students from NAU's Hotel and Restaurant Management program supplement seasoned staff and the result is a dedicated waitstaff that is wants to making your dining experience the best possible. I feel valued from the minute I walk through the door. Cruised over to 1899 the other day and had a great time checking out the joint. Their bruschetta was pretty tasty and paired well with the pesto butter. The roasted portabello mushroom sammie was delicious, albeit portions are huge for one setting (yay for lunch tomorrow!) Our server was very attentive to detail, friendly and personable. She's going to go far once she gets her degree in HRM. It's a great place to support students and enjoy a good meal. I'd definitely take the time to pop in again and check it out. Yum!

The staff was comprised largely of college students, and while they presented well, they all seemed a bit out of their league and rough around the edges. Like someone wearing an expensive suit for the first time, they seemed uncomfortable and self-conscious in their roles. The restaurant was way too bright, especially for such a large space. This gave it a bit of a dining hall feel, rather than a sexy restaurant feel, so probably not a good date/romantic dinner spot. I hope they begin to refine and mature with age- if they do they'll be a top dining location in Flagstaff.

    The service is fantastic! Great beers on draft and the prickly pear martini is a great bar addition. Both the lunch and dinner menus have some fantastic dishes: Lunch - I highly recommend the turkey burger, the red pepper and gouda soup, and the southwest bruschetta. Dinner - the achiote pork chop, the filet (of course), and the bread that comes with the meal is delicious!

    I just don't get it! I had heard commercials that this restaurant was highly reviewed in Sunset Magazine and AZ Highways. It must have been a paid review or they must have given it all they got on the days those writers were coming in to eat. We ate there right when they opened and we were just as dissatisfied as this time, but gave it another try as we thought they were still getting situated. I like the history behind the name and that it is housed in one of the oldest buildings on the NAU campus and the decor is somewhat nice, but still there is something stark with the atmosphere. The music was loud...we had to ask to have it turned down a bit. The booths were uncomfortbale with the table very high. We ordered the Salmon and the Blackened Shrimp/Scallops sharing the entrees. Everything was so salty! Nothing had a unique flavor! It was almost as if cooks rushed to put it together but had no guidance from a chef on how to create the dish, so the flavor was just masked with salt! We were very sad, as we enjoy a good meal and wanted another good local restaurant to add to our list. Unfortunately that did not happen. We will not be back!

    I had my wedding in the ballroom at the 1899 and due to that they catered it... Super trendy and appealing decor...but as I recall it is a restaurant and they should be judged on their food. Worst chicken I've ever put in my mouth. The pasta was boring but at least didn't make me gag. For the prices in that restaurant you would think, eh I'm sure it's decent, it's not. Even the bread was bad. AWFUL.

    We went to the Inn @ 1899 during the week. The service was excellent. We had lobster stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and lobster for dinner. The food was wonderful. Including drinks and tip the bill was around $130, but well worth it for a special night out.

    Our first 4 visits here were great - the stack salad, spaghetti squash, prickly pear butter, and gouda/pepper soup were great, even if the service was uneven from visit to visit. However, on our 5th visit, the stack salad was almost inedible, the bread dry, and there was a hair in my grilled bread. When we informed our server, he apologized, but all we were offered was a free dessert. The manager made a conscious choice not to come talk to us and not to not charge us for inedible food we didn't even eat. So 4.5 starts gets downgraded to 3.

    My wife and I just went to the new 1899 for a drink and were disappointed from the moment we arrived. No host to welcome or geet us when we walked in. Serveral workers walked past before someone asked if we had been helped, then it took several more minutes before someone came to seat us. It took forever to order one glass of wine and even longer to find our waitress agiain (who never gave her name) to get our check. This place seemed very disorganized and was the worst service we have ever experienced in Flagstaff. At this point, neither one of us want to go back to try dinner there.

    I was in there the other night and had a mediocre time. I've been in before and this place is just not consistent. Hanging out at the bar is always a fun time while waiting on a table... unless the staff is sitting there eating food with you. Not something I would expect for the prices of the food. Another problem around the bar is that it smelled like a dirty diaper. I don't know if there is a gas leak or a sewage problem or just bad sanitation but I nearly left after my drink. I decided to stay and keep going. Upon getting to the table I expected things to change but they didn't. I came here a few times last year and the service was always great but I think that this place may have been re-staffed. Most of the servers looked very inexperienced. There were a few I observed that seemed to be in a good groove. Do they hire people that have ever waited tables before? If they are hiring students that don't know what they are doing then please lower the prices. I won't pay that much for being some kid's test subject. The food was decent. My steak was good, mac'n'cheese was salty. My girlfriend's pasta was a little bland. I'll give this place one more try but I don't have high hopes after the other night. Hopefully they get their act together and train the servers/hire people that have had a job before.

    What a pleasant experience for a Mother's Day dinner without a reservation. We came early and were seated immediately. The wait staff were very pleasant and helpful. My husband had the brisket with mashed potatoes and asparagus which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the blackened shrimp and scallops over wild rice. This meal is not for you if you don't like hot and spicy. It was absolutely delicious. We should have ended our meal right then but chose to have dessert and coffee. The coffee came lukewarm and the key lime pie didn't taste very fresh. We would still recommend this place and would definitely return.

    Seems like there are a lot of mixed reviews here. Perhaps it depends on that night's chef? I showed up on a Monday night and was served quickly. The whitefish and gumbo special was superb. Couldn't ask for better.

    We are staying at the hotel next to this place. Saw the sign and decided to take a chance on the place (no menu on the website). The atmosphere was delightful. We were seated right away and the service was amazing. The server was kind and knowledgeable about the menu. The pesto butter was great on the focaccia. We had the Western bruchetta - delicious but messy. I ordered the Lamb and my boyfriend had the Achiote Chicken. Both dishes were amazing - his chicken kicked my lamb's butt though. There was a kitchen mix up - another server took our dishes to the wrong table so there was a delay. It was fine - the restaurant and company were so enjoyable. We each had a dessert - him the Panna Cotta and me the Beignets. Both were delicious and the portions were perfect. I would HIGHLY suggest this restaurant to anyone in the area.

    So as if I didn't love bread and butter enough, 1899 bar and grill had to throw in cilantro/garlic and prickley pear flavored butter... They are to die for! We were greeted immediately and directed to our table. The hostess was very friendly and shared some of the favorites people rave about. Our server was Katie and she was attentive and kind, and a pleasure to have for our dining experience. I ordered the filet and my boyfriend had the ribeye, both were cooked perfectly and the signature steak sauce complemented them well. The cheesy mash potatoes are delicious, however the absolute most wonderful part was the Mac and cheese... Oh my goodness, it is dynamite!! We ordered the cookies and cream cheesecake and nutmeg creme brûlée for desert, both were scrumptious. We found 1899 to be a fantastic place with a very unique atmosphere. We enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend it.

    I ordered the Fall House Salad: Baby spinach tossed with apple cider vinaigrette and topped with Asian pears, goat cheese, sun-dried cranberries, and candied walnuts but I wanted some more protein so I added chicken. I do wish they had "add" options on the menu for the salads to make them more of a meal. The salad was fresh and delightful. I thought the portion was perfect and the price was reasonable. The service was outstanding. The server brought a refill for my drink without having to ask. She was attentive without being overly so. I was having a business luncheon and so the noise level concerned me. But it didn't need to because i felt like we were the only ones there even with a full restaurant. Next time I'm in the area I would definitely eat there again.

    Hosted a fundraising event here on Sunday and the staff and management couldn't have been nicer! They really went out of their way to be accommodating as we rearranged all the tables and seating and made requests for food placement. Speaking of food, it was excellent. Ribs were tender and juicy, wings spicey, and potato croquettes were a huge hit. It was a very successful day, all the guests were happy, and we made a good amount for our non-profit. Thanks 1899 for being great community partners!

    I have been coming to this place since it opened in 2011. I'll be honest, many of the reviews here are correct. This place was not very good when I first started coming here. While I thought the menu was ok, the customer service was not, and thus, I only came here to celebrate the end of each semester with friends. However, in the 4 years I have been coming here, I must say that it has improved quite a bit, especially under the new chef. They have a seasonal menu which changes often apart from some of their mainstays including the burgers, steak and my personal favorite, gouda mac and cheese. As for everything else, the decor is quite nice, and contains a fireplace near the entrance where you can wait for your order if its busy, the customer service is iffy at times, which is likely due to the fact that students work there, and the food is overpriced. I think the cuts of steak here are not the best quality, but that is probably because the university has a contract that stipulates that Sodexo provide all of the food here. Still it is a decent place to visit, and I would give it a recommendation for first time visitors.

    My wife and I were vacationing in Flagstaff from the San Jose, CA area. We were celebrating our anniversary and looking for a great restaurant in the Flagstaff area. We read the reviews and thought that we were taking a risk. We went ahead and had dinner and we are glad we did. I had the Rib Eye Steak and it was very well prepared. My wife had fish, and her food was excellent. The drinks were excellent and the dessert, we had the cheesecake was delightful. We liked the atmosphere, although, a bit noisy. This restaurant looks like a favorite to young professionals. If you are looking for a special meal to celebrate a big event, I would highly recommend 1899 Bar and Grill.

    We had mid-day lunch to celebrate graduation on 12/12/14. The service was spectacular. We had a trainee and seasoned server, both of which were friendly, timely and attentive. One of the servers recognized the special needs of one of the elderly members of our party and was so kind and patient which was very much appreciated. The food was good though the temperature was cool rather than hot. We asked for soup to be reheated and were brought a brand new bowl instead which is great service. I love the concept of bringing college students into the industry the way NAU has done with this restaurant. I would recommend it to anyone and will likely be back again.

    There was four of us eating here. There were simply too many issues with the food and service to comment about. You would be better off going to Denny's. I feel bad for the servers because orders were taking so long to get out and a lot, and I mean a lot of orders were being sent back. Some people got up and walked out. I almost felt like we were being filmed on a practical joke show. I'm sure this place will be out of business soon because you just can't make a business survive like this.

    Great place for a drink or great food! If you're in Flagstaff, and you should try to get there in July, check out this charming spot near north campus NAU. Amazing drinks at the bar, and great people too! We just stopped in for a quick iced tea and left after having a very relaxing couple of drinks and some juicy steak skewers for a snack. I highly recommend if you want a completely different experience than the college bars in Flag. Try one of their specialty drinks listed at the bar.....great prices and refreshing!

    Had a party of four that were tired after a daylong trip to the canyon. This place was across the street from the hotel so we decided to give it a try. Nope. Two had the Scallops that were over-cooked and included some sort of funky corn cake. Another had Elk Osso Buco which was tough, and finally a Ribeye which was way over seasoned. Overall a forgettable dining experience highlighted by an annoying guitar / singer in the corner. Would not visit again.

    We made a reservation via Open Table and were seated immediately. Restaurant was moderately busy but service was very prompt, polite, & attentive. We ordered Calamari to start, one of us had a cup of their poblano soup which ha a definite bite to it l. The other had a small kale salad - perfectly light & tasty. We had a mixed-up plate of steak, sausage, ribs, garlic mashed potatoes, and cauliflower. Also a half rack of pork ribs with their Mac & cheese and cauliflower. Vegetables were perfectly done, not mushy, bbq sauce was tangy & sweet, meats were all delicious, Mac & cheese was great as were the garlic potatoes. We shared a bourbon pecan pie slice for dessert and coffee. No complaints. Pricing was competitive. We will return!

    We didn't know this was in the campus of NAU. The lightning was cold and the food was generally poor, but the staff was very accommodating and warm. We ordered calamari and artichoke dip as apps and I had the hanger steak for supper. Maybe we got an off night, as a lot of the reviews are super positive, but I wouldn't return.

    I had the worst meal I've ever tasted at 1899. I had the charred scallops and shrimp, which were marinated in some... sauce, I'm reluctant to call it a sauce because it was hardly edible. It tasted like chemicals, very bitter and didn't compliment the seafood at all. I couldn't finish it, and I'm known to hunker down and finish whatever food I've ordered even if I'm not the biggest fan of it. I gave 1899 two stars instead of the one star the food deserved because of their impressive drink selection, and attentive servers, but despite this, I'll never go back.

    Came here because it is literally outside the door to our hotel. Alex at the bar was super nice and all in all the service was really good. My issue is with the food. YUCK! I had the southwest side salad and that was fine, but my entree, the blackened shrimp and scallops was disgusting. The chopped the tails off of these huge shrimp (unpeeled and just icky) and just completely cooked them down to mush. The scallops were cooked just slightly better but the sauce they were served in, plus the dauphinois potatoes (scalloped) were just a gross gloppy mess on my plate. Because I had not eaten in almost 8 hours (road trip from LA) I did not complain about the dinner to the wait staff and just ate what I could. They do offer a neat spread of housemade butters with their (I am guessing) foccatia (sp) bread but some of our bread seemed to be stale. This is a very expensive restaurant and I have no plans of returning. EVER. There are a zillion other choices around Northern Arizona University so you won't starve while visiting here.

    After a day at Snowbowl, my kids were in the hot tub at the hotel across the street so I sat down at the bar to relax with a glass of wine. I was greeted by a friendly waitress who informed me she was not the bartender but gave me the wine list - that guy continued to ignore me for the next 5 minutes. After some forced eye contact, he took my order which he then forgot about. I reminded him as he was tinkering with some dirty dishes and finally got my wine. I was able to order a charcuterie board which was pretty good despite the very unappetizing conversation between some fellow patrons beside me at the bar. They were loud and crass with F-bombs flowing freely. The manager (I assumed by his "supervisory" demeanor) did not seem to mind. The kids were on their way to join me so I took a booth at the back of the restaurant. The staff was friendly and the menu was extensive. The bread with the 3 butters was great! The kids had the ribs - ok and the mac & cheese - amazing. My Sriracha chicken lettuce wraps were inedible. All in all, an OK experience since the kids were not exposed to the crude bar patrons. Will not go back.

    My husband and I had a nice experience at this restaurant, across from The Drury Inn. Chris, the bartender, took good care of us - asked how our drinks were and doctored my Cosmo which, initially, was on the sweet side. Salads and burgers were really good. there was a local guitarist playing and music really enhanced the experienced. I'd visit again if I'm in the area.

    Nice looking place, but I paid $30 for a Ribeye Steak that was mediocre at best. To their defense, they were serving two very large groups of people so that could have played a part. The cut of meat was very thin and the served it with a baked potato and green beens. They also serve the plate with a side of steak sauce which I actually needed which is no bueno. On the upside, the service was good and the ambience was nice.

    I was in Flagstaff for a few hours this past Tuesday and was absolutely starving, I don't even think it was until 4pm that I ate lunch! I had asked one of my customers where to go after I'd looked up a few things on yelp and he had suggested here. I was a bit weary of going to a place where college students can eat with their meal card but I will say I was quite impressed. Because I came during the happy hour time I immediately went for their edamame, literally some of the best edamame I've ever eaten! I think it was boiled and then tossed with olive oil, it had a slight oily taste to it and then sprinkled with rock salt, very good and the huge bowl was only $2 on happy hour. For my main food I ordered 2 sides, I couldn't pin point what I wanted so I had a side of the salmon which usually comes on the salads and a side of the asparagus and both were truly delicious! I had a really nice server who gave me a few refills on my diet coke and let me know about all of their most popular menu items. The place is nice inside, clean, trendy, they offer delicious food, great drinks and have a fabulous happy hour menu!

    Vegetarian selections are very minimal and overpriced, but they are pretty delicious. Great place to go and use the remainder of your meal plan money if it's close to the end of the semester. The desserts are fantastic. The service was good, not the best I've had but not the worst either. Good for groups.

    After a drive from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, and back down into Flagstaff, we were starving and had just parked and checked into the Drury Inn just across the street from this restaurant. I was a little hesitant to take a chance on the place given the 3-star average on Yelp, but we were too tired and unmotivated to go anywhere else in Flagstaff and had to leave early the next morning to continue our road trip, so we were about ready to eat anything. All of the food was good. They serve warm rolls with a variety of flavored butters which were definitely worth trying. For an entree, I had the summer sausage plus a side of mashed potatoes. The summer sausages themselves were well-spiced and perfectly cooked; very tasty. The sausages were served resting on a bed of macaroni and sauteed vegetables, which wasn't anything too special but helped calm my growling stomach. The side of mashed potatoes was definitely worth ordering - lots of flavor, though I'm afraid to speculate regarding how many calories that one little side provided. My wife had the fish and chips and enjoyed them. I tasted the fish and it was the perfect ratio of batter to fish, lightly fried, not too greasy. Service was friendly. We were seated promptly (despite no reservation on a Friday evening) and we were well taken care of by our server. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time and at the right temperature. No complaints with regard to service! Overall: Although we chose to eat here based primarily on convenience, we were pleasantly surprised to have a very positive dining experience and would actually recommend this to others passing through the area.

    MY NEWEST MOST FAVORITE PLACE IN FLAGSTAFF BAR NONE! This place has only been open for 2 weeks. It is actually on the Northern Arizona University campus directly across from the Drury Inn. The decor is ver contemporary.... Warm and well lit. There is a full bar. We were very casually dressed, which was not a problem. The underlying theme seems to be "local ingredients". That includes the produce and the beer and wine selections. The bread basket comes with three different butters...including a prickly pear butter!! So different, so good! I had the Lobster Gruyere Cavatappi....and there was a LOT of lobster in my dish. And I really feel it was fairly priced at $18.95 for the amount of food. Then there is the desserts! OMG! We had the beignet with roasted banana gelato, and we had the chocolate ganache cake which was HUGE and delicious. Service is wonderful! I HIGHLY recommend you give "1899" a try if you are up in Flagstaff. I really want this place to be around for a while.

    Nice atmosphere but their burger buns are dry, dry, dry. Must include sawdust. Side lettuce was wilted and limp--not suitable for a burger. Jalapeño bottle caps are great.

    The food and the service are always good at 1899. The servers are very attentive, and even if they don't know everything, they sure are happy to go find answers for you. This time I was there with my wife and parents. I had the special risotto (apple and cabernet with italian sausage), which was excellent. The rest of our party's entrees were very good as well (salmon with a cream sauce, baked trout and the ribs). I like the ambience, the location on campus, and the service. I'll definitely be back again.

    Food is extremely over priced and mediocre at best . The macaroni and cheese tastes like nothing so I recommend staying away from that. All in all the service was great and the manager was very attentive when my boyfriends salmon came out over cooked and his rice was ice cold. Will I ever go back? No.

    We were thrilled to find out this restaurant was in walking distance from our hotel. They had live music the night we went there and we found the ambience warm and inviting. My husband and I shared a salad and the roasted chicken. The salad was good, but not amazing, the roasted chicken was delicious that we would come back just for that dish again. They do give you bread with 2 types of housemade butter, which my husband said was tasty. The restaurant is actually located on the NAU campus which is a bit unusual seeing it was more of an upscale restaurant...just unexpected, but a pleasant surprise.

    Our experience at the 1899 Restaurant was probably my WORST ever. First the bread brought to our table was very dry and no where near fresh. The steak I ordered was quite tough and not prepared well at all. The potatoes that came with the meal were acceptable but the presentation, though interesting, made the portion very small. My wife's meal, though it seemed more edible then mine according to her, still left a lot to be desired. We originally wanted dessert with our meal but after learning that several of the choices on the menu that we were interested in were not actually available we decided to just skip dessert..... The poor quality of our experience was made worse by the stiff and mechanical service of the wait staff in their efforts to be cordial to us. Though we really wanted too like this place a lot and enjoy our dinning experience, we were never able to feel comfortable or welcome. What makes me view this dining disaster as my worst experience ever, was however not actually the poor meal or in-hospitable service but in the added insult that came when the management refused to allow us to use an $80 gift certificate to pay for our complete meal. Just days earlier we had received an $80 gift certificate from our children for Christmas. They purchased it at the restaurant for the full $80 just days before they gave it to us. Since we did not order desert or drinks our meal came to only $50 plus tax. When we presented the gift certificate as payment we were promptly informed that we could NOT USE THE CERTIFICATE TO PAY THE SALES TAX nor could any portion of it be used to leave a TIP for the server. In addition we were also clearly informed that they could NOT refund to us any of the unused portion of our gift certificate or use it at another time either. I attempted to politely explain to those present at the register that since our children had just purchased the dang certificate as a gift for us, at a cost to them of $80 cash, expecting us to pay more money for the tax and tip was clearly unreasonable. The fact that they had already received more than the price of the pathetic meals we had just eaten, days in advance, did not for some reason help the persons at register see that their stated policy was both illogical and ludicrous. They did not seem to care that they were clearly over charging us for our meals Anyway they insisted that in spite of the facts as I have explained them, I still owed them money for the tax. Finally realizing the people at the front could not be reasoned with I decided to simply cut my losses and give them the additional money to cover the taxes. I even left a few dollars extra for a small tip because I did not wish the server in this case to suffer as drastically as we had from such an absurd management policy. The bottom line here folks is that my below average $50 dinner actually cost me, or at least cost me and my kids, $90 so it seems clear to me that we got robbed at the 1899 restaurant. The server though not great also got short changed in the deal because while I normally leave at least a 20% tip, in this case I could not bring myself to leaving more then the minimum 15% I REMAIN ONE UNHAPPY CUSTOMER THAT WILL NOT BE BACK!!!!!!!

    ***Review 100, Yay me!*** For my 100th review I would like to review possibly the most underrated restaurant in Flagstaff, 1899. This place is located on campus right behind Drury. I went here on Saturday with a friend and was amazed. We were quoted a 40 minute wait so we decided to just hang out at the bar. The wait actually ended up being only about 20 minutes and the bar keeper gave us good conversation. I ordered the braised beef and I had it on top of mashed potatoes instead of the linguini; it was perfectly seasoned and tender, literally melted in my mouth! For dessert I had the molten lava cake with the gelato and it was so rich and decadent. During the meal the floor manager even came over and introduced himself as well as the chef. This place is ran by the NAU hotel and restaurant management students who are little rough around the edges but "hey" they are in training. This place has five star ambiance and I believe the prices are high for Flagstaff but accurately priced for the quality of service and food that is attained. I can easily see this place being a big hit in the future... PS you may see a lot of students here because they accept NAU meal card money; but don't let that scare you away. Also, reservations are a good idea on the weekend.

    I have been to 1899 on a few occasions as an NAU student. I have had mixed experiences. When I have gone for lunch, the food has been good, but the service has been very slow. When I went for dinner, my food was pretty much inedible and was incredibly expensive. Only go on an occasion when you have at least an hour for lunch.

    Awful, just awful. Was here for a work event and was served severely undercooked steak. I'm not a picky meat eater and can do rare if need be, but this was raw. Every time you come here it's just one more surprise of how bad everything is. My last visit was indeed the last visit.

    Terrible. Ranks #2 in my all-time worst dining experiences. Bitzee's Mama in Glendale will always hold #1. The pepper and gouda soup was edible, but oddly thick, not creamy and soupy and I felt the gouda was overwhelmed. The brisket, omigosh, Did the cook pull the bottom of his shoe off and cook it? It was tough and chewy and swimming in BBQ sauce. Never had such an inedible brisket. Wait and hostess staff missing that crisp efficiency and cutomer service edge you would expect in a higher end restaurant. Chef Robert Irvine needs to do the Impossible here, they can skip the dining renovation and start looking for a true chef and drill the staff. Methinks that may be part of the problem, the better reviews for this place are from last year, closer to its opening. Did the exec chef who designed the menu and opened the restaurant leave???

Outdoor seating in the back (facing the campus, including the oldest building on the campus for which the restaurant's named for) is comfortable with a relaxed ambiance. Also very friendly service and extremely reasonable prices! We finished everything we ordered down to the last bite. Dog-friendly patio, too!

    We are staying at the hotel next to this place. Saw the sign and decided to take a chance on the place (no menu on the website). The atmosphere was delightful. We were seated right away and the service was amazing. The server was kind and knowledgeable about the menu. The pesto butter was great on the focaccia. We had the Western bruchetta - delicious but messy. I ordered the Lamb and my boyfriend had the Achiote Chicken. Both dishes were amazing - his chicken kicked my lamb's butt though. There was a kitchen mix up - another server took our dishes to the wrong table so there was a delay. It was fine - the restaurant and company were so enjoyable. We each had a dessert - him the Panna Cotta and me the Beignets. Both were delicious and the portions were perfect. I would HIGHLY suggest this restaurant to anyone in the area.

    What a pleasant experience for a Mother's Day dinner without a reservation. We came early and were seated immediately. The wait staff were very pleasant and helpful. My husband had the brisket with mashed potatoes and asparagus which he thoroughly enjoyed. I had the blackened shrimp and scallops over wild rice. This meal is not for you if you don't like hot and spicy. It was absolutely delicious. We should have ended our meal right then but chose to have dessert and coffee. The coffee came lukewarm and the key lime pie didn't taste very fresh. We would still recommend this place and would definitely return.

    What great surprise. Brand-new restaurant on a university campus run by students. Great meal and they handled everything well despite having a few unavoidable kinks with a brand-new venture (not all the lights were working properly the night we were there). They had great customer service and I wasn't expecting a restaurant like this in Flagstaff (no offense Flagstaff). Maybe we can come by again on our next trip to the Grand Canyon.

    I just don't get it! I had heard commercials that this restaurant was highly reviewed in Sunset Magazine and AZ Highways. It must have been a paid review or they must have given it all they got on the days those writers were coming in to eat. We ate there right when they opened and we were just as dissatisfied as this time, but gave it another try as we thought they were still getting situated. I like the history behind the name and that it is housed in one of the oldest buildings on the NAU campus and the decor is somewhat nice, but still there is something stark with the atmosphere. The music was loud...we had to ask to have it turned down a bit. The booths were uncomfortbale with the table very high. We ordered the Salmon and the Blackened Shrimp/Scallops sharing the entrees. Everything was so salty! Nothing had a unique flavor! It was almost as if cooks rushed to put it together but had no guidance from a chef on how to create the dish, so the flavor was just masked with salt! We were very sad, as we enjoy a good meal and wanted another good local restaurant to add to our list. Unfortunately that did not happen. We will not be back!

    I was in there the other night and had a mediocre time. I've been in before and this place is just not consistent. Hanging out at the bar is always a fun time while waiting on a table... unless the staff is sitting there eating food with you. Not something I would expect for the prices of the food. Another problem around the bar is that it smelled like a dirty diaper. I don't know if there is a gas leak or a sewage problem or just bad sanitation but I nearly left after my drink. I decided to stay and keep going. Upon getting to the table I expected things to change but they didn't. I came here a few times last year and the service was always great but I think that this place may have been re-staffed. Most of the servers looked very inexperienced. There were a few I observed that seemed to be in a good groove. Do they hire people that have ever waited tables before? If they are hiring students that don't know what they are doing then please lower the prices. I won't pay that much for being some kid's test subject. The food was decent. My steak was good, mac'n'cheese was salty. My girlfriend's pasta was a little bland. I'll give this place one more try but I don't have high hopes after the other night. Hopefully they get their act together and train the servers/hire people that have had a job before.

    New Flagstaff restaurant exceeds our expectations. We just heard about this new restaurant on the NAU Campus and decided to celebrate our anniversary dining at my Alma Mater. The decor was very upscale, especially for little ol' Flagstaff. The wait staff was VERY attentive. The restaurant is run through the NAU College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Pretty imprssive for a place run by a bunch of college kids. Our waitress, Lisa, did a wonderful job of attending to our needs. We had a wonderful dining experience with one small glitch, more on the later. The couple we were with had been here before. My friend has a gluten intolerance and the gluten free menu selections are extensive. We ordered a bottle of Irony Pinot Noir from Monterrey that was just right for our meal. Our friends started with the chophouse salad which they shared. It was quite large and it would be nice if the menu offered a smaller portioned version for a single diner. My wife and I both ordered the lobster leek bisque which was also quite good although the roasted leeks were a bit over powering. For the main course our friends had the bacon wrapped loin lamb and the smoked achiote chicken both of which were quite good. I had an excellent beef tenderloin (medium rare) and my wife had the western pork porterhouse. Her dish was the one small glitch. She didn't register the pork part of the description and thought she had ordered a porterhouse steak, imagine her surprise. It was excellent none the less. Alas we chose to fore go dessert but the selections looked quite tempting. We will definitely be coming back.

    I had my wedding in the ballroom at the 1899 and due to that they catered it... Super trendy and appealing decor...but as I recall it is a restaurant and they should be judged on their food. Worst chicken I've ever put in my mouth. The pasta was boring but at least didn't make me gag. For the prices in that restaurant you would think, eh I'm sure it's decent, it's not. Even the bread was bad. AWFUL.

    We went to the Inn @ 1899 during the week. The service was excellent. We had lobster stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer and lobster for dinner. The food was wonderful. Including drinks and tip the bill was around $130, but well worth it for a special night out.

    Being new I figured sure lets give it a try. The vibe isnide is great and it is a very welcoming and cozy atmosphere. I ordered a steak and it was cooked perfectly, had that melt in your mouth texture which is exactly what i expected. I only had a bite of the chicken breast that my fellow dining companion ordered and being one of the easies food items to ruin i was somewhat expecting it to be dry and rubbery as you find at most restaurants but again it was very very moist and perfect. the bread came with a variety of butter's for spreading as well as a wine and vinegar mixture. The prickly pear butter was very tasty. All around a perfect dining experience. The service was very pleasant and quick. I will return again!

    This is a great restaurant on the very North end of NAU campus. It's pretty high end dining so it's an occasion type place for me. I took my wife there for our anniversary and we had a great dinner. They have a very nice sitting area in front of a large fireplace with an absolutely stunning large antique copper hood. There is also a full bar with sitting as well and we were told they are expanding out an outdoor sitting area/patio. Overall great place to get dinner. You many have to use the Drury Inn parking garage if the spaces out front are full but they validate your ticket so it's free. There is a lot of neat history associated with the building and NAU as well.

    Well, I was staying at a hotel across the street and this fancy-looking restaurant got our attention, mostly by adverts around. The facade looks nice and fits the NAU campus. Also, not much to complain about the interior. However, the service and cooks look to be all campus students and that was so obvious in the quality of the servers and food we got on the table. For this kind of restaurant I would expect more professionals...the lamb I got was mostly non-edible. Chewy, almost raw, bleh. They also serve free starter - a little bread with 3 kinds of butter. The bread was good, however, the butter wasn't very special. If you want to have a beer, wine and few starts, this might be a good place for a small group or a couple. However, don't go there because of the food. You will be disappointed. You can get much better, authentic and tasty food in smaller restaurants in the town. For half the price...

    The food is really amazing. The service is friendly, and the decor is hip. It's a really great place for date-night and lunch with the girls! The one thing that could be improved is bread baskets with lunch! I would love to have their delicious bread with lunch.     Have been to this place twice..each time with very satisfactory results. The lunch menu is mainly but not entirely sandwiches on the highest order. The prices are not any higher than anywhere else. The supper is a bit higher but the menu is extensive and superb. Heartily recommend and will myself go back soon.

    Our first 4 visits here were great - the stack salad, spaghetti squash, prickly pear butter, and gouda/pepper soup were great, even if the service was uneven from visit to visit. However, on our 5th visit, the stack salad was almost inedible, the bread dry, and there was a hair in my grilled bread. When we informed our server, he apologized, but all we were offered was a free dessert. The manager made a conscious choice not to come talk to us and not to not charge us for inedible food we didn't even eat. So 4.5 starts gets downgraded to 3.

    My wife and I just went to the new 1899 for a drink and were disappointed from the moment we arrived. No host to welcome or geet us when we walked in. Serveral workers walked past before someone asked if we had been helped, then it took several more minutes before someone came to seat us. It took forever to order one glass of wine and even longer to find our waitress agiain (who never gave her name) to get our check. This place seemed very disorganized and was the worst service we have ever experienced in Flagstaff. At this point, neither one of us want to go back to try dinner there.

    The place is very nice and clean. The service was good, but they did a little to much overselling of the lack-luster food. Also the prices are to expensive. I ordered the blackened scallops and shrimp for dinner and I guess blackened means burnt to them because that is what it was! Almost inedible actually. My friend got the chicken pasta and said it had no flavor and drowned it with salt. The only gleaming ray of light for this place is the apple pie which was very good.

    Great location and decor inside but lacking in other areas. The wait staff are very friendly but very slow and inattentive, kept having to flag our waitress down (took almost 20 minutes for a lemon bar). The bread and butter are great, pesto butter was my favorite. I had the roasted red pepper soup with Gouda which was great, should have stopped there. I had had the spaghetti squash on a previous visit and had really liked it , but it was salty and I hardly ate any, my waitress didn't even ask why. My firiends were similarly disappointed with their meals, unfortunately I don't think I'll be back.

    this place is real good me and the wife herd about this place from around town and we gave it a try now I dont like it when you order a new york and the butcher didnt even trim off all the fat. Not this place the meat is nicely trim and they know how to cook meat its hard to get a medrare steak but these guys can do it I'm going back.

    I had high hopes for this place~no bueno! My boyfriend & I are from California we had a long drive & decided to have a nice dinner read some reviews on YELP, we wanted to support this restaurant for several reasons, but honestly wish we never ate there. Appetizer-brushetta decent Wine & Beer-good Prime Rib horrible- more fat than meat on it so disgusting Lobster Pasta-so-so We asked the server to tell the manager & chef that we were not happy with our dinner especially with the Prime Rib. Supposedly it was a house cut, terrible. but never once the manager talked to us about our dinner. We had lunch two days later @ Cracker Barrel & the prime rib was 100% tastier & the cost for the two meals we had there was the cost for our horrible prime rib @ 1899. I truly hope the manager reads the reviews here on YELP to help his restaurant.

    Oh the joys of an overpriced steak house on a college campus. If you are a non-student, you are spending $26 out of your own pocket on steak and asparagus. But wait, why are there students sitting next to you? Because the place takes "dining dollars," part of the NAU meal plan, so students can actually pay with their parents money! After realizing this, every freshman boy thinks he is clever and takes a girl on a date here. And the food is good, and she is mildly impressed until he pulls out his NAU id to pay. I have heard mixed reviews about this place ("the chocolate cake is good!" vs. "the chocolate cake was awful!") so I guess it's a hit-and-miss experience. It's run by the hotel and restaurant management students, so its a pretty cool hands-on learning experience for them, even if that means customers are the test subjects. I have enjoyed the food and atmosphere every time I've gone so far, but I would think it was overpriced if I wasn't one of those crazy kids charging it to their NAU account. I know it gets crowded on weekends so make a reservation!

    The service is fantastic! Great beers on draft and the prickly pear martini is a great bar addition. Both the lunch and dinner menus have some fantastic dishes: Lunch - I highly recommend the turkey burger, the red pepper and gouda soup, and the southwest bruschetta. Dinner - the achiote pork chop, the filet (of course), and the bread that comes with the meal is delicious!
