What a disappointment to find that our favorite sandwich, the fried green tomato is OFF the menu!! And we drove in from my business in Irondale, just to eat one. We are about to try a hamburger that our waiter has recommended, the jamb good burger- hopefully it will not disappoint. The hamburger is good, although the jam has an overpowering bacon flavoring. The sweet potato chips and blue cheese dipping sauce are still awesome.

Ordered from The Takeout online. It was awesome. We had the ribeye and filet medallions. Also had the sweet potato chips with blue cheese dressing. Omg. It was so good. It was pricey, but we had enough for two meals. The blue cheese dressing is the bomb!!

Looking for a local spot that has a neighborly feel? This is your place, whether you're dining out with a date, with your family, or with a group of friends. The diverse menu promises something for a wide variety of tastes. My favorite choice continues to be their fish tacos. Just the right amount of fish, slaw and sauce. If you want to clean your whole plate, then resist ordering their tasty fried pickles! The generous platter of pickles is plenty to share with a party of 5 or 6. If you're lucky, you'll catch a Living Social special where you can purchase a $25 food voucher for only $12. What a deal! It's where the locals go!

Great craft beer. They have good people brews. I had the blue burger and it was out of this world! Great place for friends who want a chill place to eat and drink

A great local dive that is a little hard to find ... but once you find it, you will feel like it's always been your neighborhood bar and grill. A great selection of beers, along with tasty entrees, makes this place a favorite for my wife and me. Try it once and I think you'll agree.

First try of this place wasn't the best. I ordered the cahaba quesadilla and a side of smoked Mac and cheese ($12). Quesadilla was pretty good, but the Mac and cheese was served cold. My server took it back to warm it up but didn't bring it back until several minuets after I had finished eating. Got a refill on my drink with out ice...always nice on a hot day. Service seemed generally slow as well. Maybe they are just having a bad day, but for the prices I see on the menu I would have expected more attention to detail.

This place is good, yet pricey. You're certain to find something on the menu that you'd enjoy... from a variety of burgers alone, to filling-sounding sandwiches to and other Entree's... most of which have spiked price tags to go along with them. Atmosphere is family oriented and feels like a place that people from the neighborhood frequent and are known by name. Not only did I catch waiters stop and talk to customers off to the side quite regularly, I even spotted a chair at the bar with someone's name spelled out in black electric tape... yes tape. I can only imagine what it's like when this woman is there lol. My meal itself was tasty and filling. I got a "Jam Gouda" burger that had smoked gouda and a bacon jam along with a few other toppings. It was very tasty... though a tad overcooked for the medium temp I ordered. Also, instead of fries to compliment I actually ordered grits which were very good and very tasty. I also ordered one of there specialty cocktails which I wasn't wow'd or even pleased with. Wasn't nasty, just didn't taste like much. The atmosphere was pretty nice. Catch some patio seating if the weather's right. It is however, one of those awkward places that doesn't really have a host section so you just kinda stand in the doorway until someone comes and asks you what you want lol. Other than that, no complaints. Nice restaurant decor. Can get tight inside if really busy. All in all, I would love to try this place again... not sure how I'd feel about ordering one of the pricey entree's from here, but definitely something else on the menu!

Great neighborhood bar. Wait staff consistently friendly and helpful. You can't beat the burgers but all fish dishes are as fresh as if you were on the gulf. You can't go wrong with the chefs special. Tonight it was red fish topped with an abundance of crabmeat over a fabulous grit cake. It came with an arugula/strawberry/goat cheese salad with a yummy balsamic bacon dressing.

Great place! Everyone is super friendly. I tend to go out later in the evening and I have never been made to feel unwelcome. This place has been a regular destination for me whenever I am in the area. Glad I decided to give it a try and hope to see continued success. Beer selection on tap is always top notch which is what I am basing my rating on. I have yet to try the food. If you are in the area it is worth giving this local bar a few minutes of your time.

Short story - Definitely give it a try. Good burgers and sandwiches, nice service, and good beer selection. I love the sweet potato chips with blue cheese dip. Do not miss the blue cheese dip! Long Story - SERVICE - I have been here about 7 times and only once did I have a server that I would rate sub par. The rest were not just OK but were really really good. FOOD - I love the burgers here. I have gotten the pimento cheese burger several times and I have gotten the Cordon Blue sandwich twice. Love them. DRINKS - OK draft beer selection, several decent wines, and a full bar. Call ahead to find out the daily drink special. ATMOSPHERE - Above average. Definitely some interesting wall art, ok patio area, a few tv's. I have been here for a business meeting, a date, hanging out with friends, and to study for a test during the off peak hours.

Great variety. Fish tacos are good and their hamburgers are excellent. Little on the pricey side.

I love the Ridge and Mudtown. My wife and I eat at both frequently. My favorite dish is the fried pimento cheese balls. The wings are great also.

I was here recently for my birthday lunch. We needed a close by option that was casual because we planned a pool day. We were a table of 5 and were seated promptly. Drink orders were next. The decor has a cool rustic vibe and the bar is nice and long! There were two other tables there also. The one guy waiting on all of us did a good job on checking on us and refilling our drinks. He took our orders and didn't write a single thing down, which made us nervous because you know us women had several modifications! Our meals came out exactly as we ordered! Very impressed! I got the mini dogs with grilled onions and jalapenos, delicious!! With a side of dirty rice, which could've had more of a kick to it. Im used to meat in my dirty rice but this was all veg but it wasn't bad. He also brought out small plates for the cookie cake! For me, this place is right down the street and is a nice local place to hop in and get a bite to eat with about a 95% chance the food will be on point! That's pretty high imo! Now this restaurant does cater to the neighborhood families so early dinner time, you will see a bunch of kids in there but if you come after that wave of families, you are good to go!

Great service, food good, blue cheese dip the BEST! Rest of dinner okay. Relaxed atmosphere.

The blackened fish tacos are some of the best ive had in Birmingham. The double bacon cheeseburger is also epic.

The owners of Mudtown have a second restaurant! The Ridge offers a great selection of local beers. Cahaba Blond is a must try if you haven't had it before! The food is Southern pub food...I call it "man food". I had the fish tacos and my husband had the Cubeno sandwich. Both were fresh, tasty and unique. Prices are reasonable and the decor is very much pub-like. A family restaurant and local spot that beats out the chain restaurant scene.

I finally had a chance to try The Ridge. My wife & I decided to go for a somewhat early Saturday night dinner. Arriving around 6:30 our plans were to have a few beers, dinner & hang out for a while. Someone else mentioned the dirty stairwell to get up there & I agree it's not a great 1st impression. The roach traps in the corners of the landing just made it extra special. But the place itself is fine. Clean & much nicer than the climb up. Good local beer selection on tap including Cahaba, Avondale & Trim Tab. Wine & mixed drinks available. Good bar food selection with a focus on burgers. I had the Cubano sandwich & as a Miami native I declare it pretty authentic and very good. A nice touch is that you can choose from a good selection of side dishes included with most entrees. Service was good. My real problem with the place for me was that most of the restaurant was taken up with families with kids. Noisy, lots of running around. I normally am fine with that, but it wasn't the atmosphere we expected nor wanted for a "hang out" Saturday night. And you Mudtown guys... Do all your restaurants have to be 1 flight up?

Cool little neighborhood bar and restaurant. The food has been outstanding the couple times I have eaten there. Great burgers and fish tacos. The bar is well stocked with several great local beers on tap which is always nice to see. Would probably go more often if they stayed open a little later as we live right down the street and this area is seriously lacking a good bar/tavern.

After going over reviews from Yelp and Urbanspoon, my wife and I decided to try the Ridge. Overall, our experience was EXTREMELY disappointing. For full disclosure, our experience is based on a to-go order. For the appetizer, we had the crab and corn fritters. The fritters looked good. Once we bit into them, there was no much crab meat nor flavor. The dipping sauce was very good. Entrees, my wife had the fried green tomato sandwich with bacon and I had the chicken and waffle sandwich. The fried green tomato sandwich was a disaster. It had Swiss cheese, which my wife does not like. We were unaware of any cheese on sandwich due to the poor menu description not mentioning this fact. The fried green tomatoes were coated with a very thick breading which caused the erratically sliced tomatoes to be undercooked. The chicken and waffle sandwich was better. It could have used more seasoning in both the waffle and batter of the chicken. The chicken did have a couple of burned spots. The fries on both entrees were very well prepared. The service: Again, our experience was a to-go order. Picking up the food, the girl at the bar where to-go orders are picked up was very friendly. The food was ready about the time I was quoted. After eating our dinner, we called to complain with the shift manager. Given everything listed above, he did make make everything right by issuing a refund. He also thanked us for letting him know about the quality issue.

From the drinks to entrees to sides (holy cow those fried pickles!), I really enjoyed my entire meal at The Ridge. I'm thankful that The Ridge's fried pickles are available as a side, because you're going to want them for both an appetizer AND a side. Too much pickle, you say? Never when it comes to the best fried pickles in Birmingham. Yeah, I said it - the best. I am pretty particular when it comes to fish tacos and can honestly say that The Ridge's are the best I've tasted in this area. There I go again with "the best". The fish is seasoned with the perfect amount of spice and dressed with an appropriate amount of remoulade sauce and pico de gallo. Our server suggested the grilled vegetables to go with the fish tacos and I don't know what the seasoned the veggies with, but they were fresh tasting and cooked perfectly. I'm not a huge vegetable fan in general (but am trying to be!) so to find a vegetable based side dish that isn't fried or starch based is a major win. The Ridge has earned a place in my "best meals lately" file. We'll definitely be back very soon to try more of their offerings!

The Ridge is the perfect restaurant/pub type joint that every neighborhood should have. The kind of place where the bartender and servers remember you by name after just a couple visits. It also helps that the food is SO good--fresh, good portion sizes, and everything I've tried on the menu is great. The burgers are awesome--big, juicy and you can design your own. The pimento cheeseburger and the blue cheeseburger are both excellent. Great happy hour deals: half-priced wine on Wednesdays and $2 select draft beers on Thursdays (7 of 8 taps are local, Alabama beers!)

Once again another amazing experience service wise. I didn't catch the waitress name because I went to the bathroom and came back and my friend ordered our deep fried pickle chips. The portion was ridiculous. It was enough for about four people. It was just two of us. Our server was tomboyish and had straight long hair. She was very funny, witty and informative about the items that we ordered. She backed up my notion for a burger although I was probably maxed out of my cow intake but still ordered a jalapeno pimento cheese burger. Wasn't the best burger but it was pretty decent. I just wish it was medium rare like I requested. It would've been a bit better but I got full off the pickle chips so only took three bites. My friend got a ruben with no corn beef since she's a vegetarian. Our waitress spoke to the chefs about what to supplement the corn beef with and they suggested zucchini. My friend didn't know that she did this so she was super grateful for that. She had mashed potatoes as her side. We really had a great experience. Super pleasant.

Meh....it's okay Not sure why you're raving about the blackened fish tacos. Mine were lightly fried and bland. Maybe they served the wrong item. No green veggies. Sorry side salad or fried pickle chips don't count. Although the fried pickles were the best item I tasted. Really turned off by the waitress (not ours) who complained about catching pneumonia but still went outside the door to smoke with one of the other patrons. And not far enough from the door since we were also able to enjoy her tobacco product. The offer for a To-Go drink from our server was really nice.

Just can't go wrong here! Local favorite - love at first bite, for sure... This is one of those places that I will go to even if it was not near the house - fortunately for me, it is... Always a pretty good selection of draft beer... As mentioned elsewhere, can't beat the beer prices on Thursday for a craft beer ($2)... Food is AWESOME. Haven't had a bad dish here (and I have had a lot off the menu)... Favorites include the Tuna Tataki, The Philly (Dressed Up), The Rebel Yell, The Ridgeline, and the Chicken and Shrimp Gumbo... Pretty much, you can't go wrong with any of their daily specials either (Mmmmm.. Redneck Oysters)... Can't say enough positive about this place... Great food, drink and SERVICE - the trifecta... Always fast and friendly... Def recommended and a great place to bring a friend (every out of town guest I've had since discovering this place has been taken here, for what that's worth)!

Great place for lunch or drinks after work. They have wonderful sandwiches. My fav is the Reuben. Yummy.....so good. I am telling you, I really hope this place makes it. It is a little hard to find. It is tucked up and away from the main road. You have to go up stairs or an elevator to make it to the place. But when you get there, you just seat yourself. I have always had a great waiter/waitress. Never have I had a bad experience. It is just nice and relaxing in this place.

Outstanding food in a great friendly atmosphere. They say their hamburgers are their signature but their fish tacos and Cuban sandwich are two of my favorites. Always great local brews on tap too.

My husband and I went for dinner on a Thursday night, when they have $2 draught beer, which was great local stuff for $2. We ordered 2 entrees to split - the blackened fish tacos and the fried green tomato sandwich. Both were delicious! For a side, I highly recommend the fried pickles (and I don't usually like pickles) or the onion rings. Our waitress was super energetic and very attentive. The portions were big, but manageable.

  • Tim K.

Ate here for lunch. I had a 1/2 pound Swiss cheese burger with onion rings and my wife had a child's pimento cheese burger with fries. The meals were less than stellar, much less! Fortunately we had a Living Social coupon that I paid $12.00 for to get $25.00 worth of food. Our ticket was $18.00+. I had to pay tax only. I would not spend my hard earned dollars here. I ordered my burger medium cooked but it arrived closer to well done and was very dry. Onion rings were luke-warm but the flavor was good. My wife's meal was mediocre and also overlooked and served with McDonald's style fries but not as good. Service was nothing special. So, all of these taken together results in a 3 star rating.

I was in town on a business trip and saw that The Ridge had good ratings. I went here with 4 coworkers on a Monday night around 7 pm. Not knowing the area, I called ahead and asked if they took reservations. I was told that they did not, but the caller took the number of people in our party and said that he would try to save us a spot. When you arrive, you had to enter through a building door and climb a flight of stairs to get to the second floor where the restaurant is. There were a few people at the bar and another group dining, but otherwise there was plenty of space for more diners. We ordered fried green tomatoes, fried pickles (my first time having both), and grilled tuna tataki. All three dishes were delicious! The fried green tomatoes and pickles were great, and my coworker who said she usually hates pickles loves the fried ones. This dish still has the tang of the pickle taste, and the fried aspect adds a nice touch. I also ordered the Pineapple Push which was pretty tasty. For my main dish I ordered the pimento cheeseburger with french fries. The fries were very good, the ones that are kinda on the thinner side. The burger was okay and a little on the messier side. The service is pretty good and they are super friendly. Overall a nice place to go to when you're in the area!

Not sure why the raves. Sautéed onions and grilled veggies greasy with an unidentifiable grease. Lettuce tomato combo for burger was room temp and wilted. Stairways and elevator up to restaurant are filthy. Burger mediocre at best. Loud neighborhood vibe.

Great experience every time I've been here! Of course, I'm partial to places that have good fish tacos (and this is one of them!), but my friends and I have tried various menu items and have yet to be disappointed. The staff has always been really helpful as well, which is a huge plus in my book.

  • Robin W.

I have to admit I am not a blue cheese fan, but something drew me to the black and blue burger.YUM! The staff gave away the secret: their bacon is rubbed in jalapeño oil before it is smoked. Can you believe it!? Fried pickles are a bar food standby, but we ended up with a mountain of them. This place is not for nibblers or the faint of heart.

Good happy hour and excellent sandwiches. The Monte Cristo is good.

If you are in search for a place with the friendliest staff and awesome food, this is it. The whole vibe is neighborhood pub. They make an effort to have local craft beers on tap as well as standbys. The wait staff bends over backwards to make you feel welcome and get you your food/drinks. My favorites are the Cuban sandwich, bleu cheese burger and pork osso bucco. The cozy location is not right on the beaten path but like a secret garden of goodness. They also support Vestavia sports by offering deals Fridays after games for players/boosters/fans.

Found this place accidentally. Was looking for a place to get a quick bite before dance lessons and pulled into the parking lot. Saw the sign and decided to try it. Had a margarita to start, quite good although not as much salt as I wanted (and requested) on the rim. Ordered the Mahi special to split with my dear wife and it was fabulous. It came with a salad and two sides. For the sides we chose another salad and the grilled veggies. Both salads were fresh, tasty and nicely sized. The ranch dressing was good and the honey mustard was the more spicey than sweet kind and they came out enough before the food that I could finish it. They split the fish and gave us two helpings of the grilled veggies for a very small split fee. The grilled veggies had a spice on them and were excellent. The fish was cooked perfect and was fabulous. We will definetely be going back and next time I'm going to try one of their burgers which looked great. (unless my wife wants to split the fish again). YUM!!

This bar/grille is about a mile from the house. The menu begins with typical bar food, burgers, wings, sandwiches etc and expands to include a handful of entrees. The chef is obviously trained as the food is made from scratch, is quite fresh and good. The service can be a bit spotty but the one time our service was poor, we were comped and hadn't complained. I've eaten here 15-20 times and recommend it.
