My husband and I ate here last night and we were "wowed" by the food and service! Shea was our waiter and his suggestions were right on the money! We began with fried blue crab claws and they were some of the best we have ever had. The cocktail sauce had just the right amount of heat. It complimented the crabs instead of overpowering them. For our main dishes, my NOLA born hubby ordered Blackened Redfish with sides of broccoli and fries. The dish was served with a lemon aioli sauce. The fish was seasoned perfectly, the fries were excellent and the broccoli was cooked just right. The aioli sauce was great on all three offerings. I opted for the Half Shell Salad topped with fried oysters, served with the house Balsamic dressing. I wanted to compare to Acme's fried oyster salad. Look out Acme, Half Shell is giving you some very stiff competition and with the addition of avocados to the mix they may have outdone one of my all time favorites! The oysters were cooked to perfection. Shea strongly suggested the Bananas Fosters Cheesecake and I'm glad he did! We have had this dessert at other places and every time it ended up tasting more like banana pudding than cheesecake. That is not the case at Half Shell. This was truly the BEST Bananas Foster Cheesecake I have ever eaten! We will become regulars at this restaurant! The only challenge was the darkness of our table. Next time we will request a well-lit booth. It was difficult to read the menu or see our food.

Supper with the family, Greeted with a warm smile and seated quickly on a busy happy hour. The wait staff here are the best I've experienced, they know the food, pay attention to details and are just right friendly. Oyster Sampler is a go to choice, 12 oyster 4 different succulently delicious fruits of the sea. Three entrees Shrimp Orleans, Fried Oysters and Grilled Snapper. All cooked just right. Snapper was the star followed by the Oysters. Sides were a good compliment to the main dishes, you get a choice. If you don't go for the Sea Food GO for the Turnip Greens, I've eaten green all my life and never had any that got close the the smokey goodness of these. :) Maybe should have given five stars, 4 1/2 for sure, the price was a-little high, ok

Just had the best oyster & shrimps poboys from this restaurant. Generous amount of crispy shrimps & ousters wrapped in a succulent sandwich, filled with lots of veggies. Im totally satisfied with my southern poboys craving. Excellent service. Nice atmosphere. Reasonal price.

Wow! Food and service was great! I had the Seafood pasta with sweet potato brûlée. Awesome dish! My aunt had the shrimp and grits it was good, but the bacon made it a little salty. Hold a little bit of the bacon and its spot on! My cousin had the Red Snapper and it delicious!

Walked in on a Sunday at 2pm. Was told there was a 20-25min wait and didn't have to wait a second past that to get seated. The hostess was pleasant and made sure my grandfather was comfortable at the table in his wheelchair. The restaurant could stand to be a few degrees cooler, we closed the window shade to make do. Shea, our server was very attentive and made small talk :) Made sure our drinks were topped off and did a great job. I ordered the Royal Red shrimp entree with okra and sweet potatoes. The shrimp were delicious and DID taste like lobster, would definitely have them again. The okra was salty but the sweet potatoes were really good, true to the brûlée with a crunchy topping. Overall experience was great, Shea is awesome and saw us out the door. Would definitely come again and recommend to my peers.

We had a great meal. A dozen Orleans oysters and the waiter was great, Shea, who did a great job with 12 at our table. He was very helpful on what to order. Everyone's meal was really good.

Amazing restaurant! Very friendly staff! They give oyster samples at the bar! We had the oyster sampler and shrimp Orleans. And banana foster cheesecake for dessert. We WILL BE back !!

Very good food and atmosphere. I had the seafood pot pie and, Oh so good! Very good dish. Came out piping hot and stayed hot to the last bite. Gumbo super delish, too. (I got a bowl to heat up for lunch at work tomorrow ) I thought the house salad was pretty ordinary - I asked for the dressing on the side but it came out drenched with dressing. I sent it back and the server took care of the issue quickly and with no problems. I also ordered the sweet potato creme brulee thinking it would be Creme brulee consistency with a touch of sweet potato but it was more like a sweet potato with a touch of creme brulee. Okay if you like that texture but I dont. My dinner companion did, though, and ate it all up poste haste. I enjoyed the New Orleans ambiance and jazz music playing and very good service. Recommend this place highly!

Great food, great service. Fresh seafood we had a great time, short wait and clean facilities, the oysters were perfect on my sampler!

Really good dinner, our server was prompt, friendly, and helpful. Had the Filet New Orleans, Panned Flounder, and Crabcakes. Shrimp on the filet could have been a little bigger, but really my only gripe. All were delicious and well prepared. Also had the Sweet Potato Creme Brulee, which could actually have been a dessert. I could suggest one thing, they might serve a basket of warm bread when folks sit down. To me, that would really be a nice touch. All in all, a great date night out, we'll definitely be back.

Quite possibly the best Shrimp and Grits I have ever had. The Oyster Sampler was incredible. Would recommend both to anyone.

Half Shell Oyster House was just okay in my book. I read the yelp reviews and was expecting my taste buds to be blown away, but was disappointed in some of the food and definitely in the service. The smoked tuna dip, oysters Orleans, fried oysters, sweet potatoes, asparagus were all great. The remaining oysters in the sampler were just okay. The fried shrimp was just okay. The cocktail sauce was meh. The server was slow, failed to keep our drinks filled, and was even slower with the check. Some of the decor was pretty cool though, like the oyster shelled walls. The food was extremely overpriced.

Best Chargrilled Oysters in West Mobile! Beautiful and friendly atmosphere. Delicious desserts and Drinks.

First time here, so we decided to try it out for lunch. Really nice place and plenty of room. Started off a bit slow with the drinks and a server, about a 15 minute wait. Now, after that was settled, everything was excellent. My wife went with the crab claws and I went with the shrimp & grits. Between us, we also ordered the fried okra, Cajun potatoes and the sweet potatoes. As I mentioned, everything was great and we'll definitely be back. I'm thinking about the seafood pot-pie next time.

First and last time for this establishment. Great service but the food quality was rather poor. Oyster sampler - over cooked - possibly warmed in a microwave too hot to eat. Rubbery tasteless oyster. Blackened snapper over cooked tough on the edges. Asparagus over cooked drowning in butter. Passed on dessert. 3 strikes.... You're out

Appetizer: yellowfin tuna tartare. It was delicious...the tuna was tossed in citrus lime mixture with diced jalepeno and green onions. It rested on top of fresh, diced avocado. Siraccha and sweet soy glazed accompanied this dish and wasabi. I loved it and wished it had a crunch factor to it. If some wonton crisp chips were served along side this dish, it would be banking money! My oyster sampler was delicious! I loved every oyster I had. The oyster chefs felt that some of the oysters did not look good, so he sent four more oysters to my table! Score! I have tried many different places, this is the best for cooked oysters! Hubby had the grilled shrimp po boy. Tartar sauce was definitely homemade. Sandwich was soft but not soggy. Nice flavor to the shrimp therefore no extra sauce is needed. Next time, I want to try dessert! Too full this time around!

After a 15 minute wait for our server to arrive at our table, Star, our server finally arrived and apologize for the long delay. Apparently, our server was covering two sections because someone had not arrived for work. Keeping this in mind, I blame the management for the long delay and not Star. My wife had the lunch portion of fried shrimp with new potatoes. The shrimp were perfectly seasoned and cook. The potatoes were over cooked and dry. The portion size was perfect for lunch and reasonably priced. I had the grilled chicken. I found the chicken to be seasoned appropriately, but over cooked and tough. (I am not going to hold the overcooked chicken against The Half Shell because most restaurants overcooked chicken breast). The sweet potato creme burlee is not actually a burlee in the classical sense, but a watered-down sweet potato casserole. Not a winner in my book. I did find our server, Star, to be a breath of fresh air who made a poor start of service end with a bang. Great job, Star. All-in-all, an average dining experience and not much to write home about.

Delicious! This place met and/or exceeded every expectation. It's a bit pricey but worth it. The seafood pasta was the best I've ever had, and at the suggestion of another yelp review, I had the sweep potato creme brûlée. Glad I did. It was almost like a dessert but very very good. Next time I'm in Mobile I will definitely go back.

One of Mobile's best new restaurants! Everything I ate was very delicious. I had a wonderful glass of white wine, half a dozen oysters, and a shrimp poboy. The service was great too. The restaurant gives off a very upper class feel, but kills the vibe with a huge tv in the dining area.

    (4)
  • Julio G.

Outstanding food and service. The Big Easy Surf and Turf is divine (medium rare). I like the chargrilled oysters but they could a little more garlic butter sauce. Super nice atmosphere (upscale yet casual, go figure), attentive wait staff (every visit without fail), quality menu. Two thumbs up!

  • Rod M.

Excellent seafood. We were surprised to find this in a strip mall near our hotel. The clam chowder was outstanding. Definitely get the Sweet Potato Brulé side dish (not desert) , it's very tasty and different. The seafood trio of grouper, shrimp and scallops done blacken had just the right amount of spice.

    (5)
  • Kim P.

Had a wonderful 6oz filet with shrimp...the lobster crab bisque was also to die for! If u like sweet potato you have to try there side dish SP creme Brule!

While on a business trip to Mobile, I had the pleasure of eating at the Half Shell two nights in a row. The first night, I tried the Grilled Seafood Sampler. All the items were very good. On night two I ordered the Oysters Sampler and the Royal Reds appetizer. The grilled oysters were really good. The variety of flavors is interesting. The royal reds were great. They tasted almost like lobster, probably the best peel and eat shrimp I've had. The draft beer selection was limited, but they do have a couple of craft brews available. I would definitely head back to try out a few more menu items.

Had a team dinner here while in town for an event and everything was delicious, everybody liked their food, oysters were great, atmosphere was good, service was good. Close to hotels. We'd go back.

2.5 stars. Hit and miss, more of a miss. They do a decent job on oysters (watch out for shell though!!!) and the wine list is ok. Everything else, I recommend to be careful with - they do not know how to cook/ prepare seafood and it will either be swimming in butter or be overcooked and dried out( especially fish ); and they most definitely do not know how to fry seafood - the crab claws we ordered on one of our visits were dry and the coating tasted like flour, the voodoo shrimp tasted ok but was on a greasy side. All in all, definitely not a must visit. If you do end up going, stick with the oysters. And do not expect to have your water re- filled, ever. They just do not do it. So if you are a heavy water drinker, bring your own.

I hate to say it but don't waste your money... I travel for work, so I get a chance to try food from the East coast to the West coast and from Washington to Mexico... I love seafood and the Half Shell needs to step up their game... First the salad, are you kidding me? its all iceberg lettuce...! For a fine dining restaurant..? Even McDonald's has some spring mix in their salads, give me a break...! I've had the stuffed portobello mushroom and not impressed at all. It's not much bigger then a couple Burger King meat patties stacked on top of each other and there's barely enough crab in it to even taste it... Pretty pricy for a couple mushroom caps... I've eaten there three times and the only thing I'll say I enjoyed were the Oysters, but the only thing they had to do is remove half the shell... Sorry, it's the worst seafood restaurant I've encountered in my travels...!

Another good seafood choice for Mobile. Half Shell has a lot of choices. I've Had the shrimp and grits and it was okay. I really liked the redfish orleans. The sauce is great. Also, the sweet potatoes are good (almost as good as Ruth's Chris)

    (4)
  • Chris V.

The words disappointed comes to mind. Staff was not knowledge of menu. Food came out wrong and by the time server came to check on us I was already done with this place. Lots of problems and no management to be seen.

As a girl plucked from Florida and now living in the desert of West Texas, I sure do miss Oyster Rockefeller. So, on a business trip to the Gulf, had to find the best place around. The Half Shell did an excellent job. They were delicious and the oysters were cooked to perfection. Yum! The service was excellent as well. I will hopefully be back soon.

  • Nicole E.

I had the seafood pasta. It was good but I did have to add salt. And im very sensitive to salt so I dont usually ever have to add salt to my food. I highly doubt that the shrimp in my pasta was fresh. It had that "chain restaurant" quality. So if you are into the local restaurant taste, this isnt it. Other than that, the food was pretty good and the sweet tea great too. Very nice atmosphere and I definitely see them being able to accommodate large groups. It is absolutely gorgeous in there and the staff are very friendly from the hostess to the guy cleaning the table behind us. They have a happy hour everyday from 3-6 so I definitely will come back for the drink specials and appetizers.

Went to Half Shell Mobile today Sunday Brunch. This was our first visit and will NOT be our last. I had the fired crab cakes covered with poached eggs which were perfectly prepared, but the height of the meal was the fire grilled oysters. Restaurant was full, but service was great with food being delivered with no delay. Not a negative comment, but restaurant does not take reservations even though Yelp indicates that they do.

OMG the best place to get FRESSSSH seafood! I got the poboy shrimp and it was banginggggg! Ive ate at Laps...Felix and all that causeway stuff but Half Shell? THE BEST! Price range is around $20-28. Kinda pricey but soooo worth it! My poboy was only around $11 though. My boyfriend got the pot pie and that was around $25. The pot pie was okay. Oh and do not get the potatoes, not good! The gumbo is okay too.... but seriously the seafood was so good I'll still give this place 5 stars haha. Our waiter was soooo sweet and funny! His name is Miles. I LOVE HIM! check this place out!!!

I had dinner here last night and today I'm back for lunch. There were so many choices on the menu, I lamented the fact that I couldn't have them all. Shrimp Orleans is a little bit on the oily side but taste is delish. My husband got the fried shrimp and they were huge. My fav was the voodoo shrimp appetizer. We did the sauce on the side and it was perfect. The salad w avocado and almonds was fresh and light. Gumbo had lots of shrimp. As Arnold says, "I will be back."

    (5)
  • Mike J.

This place has a really nice decor and ambiance. Service was OK (though they were very busy) and the food was decent. I ordered the voodoo shrimp po' boy, which was OK but I wouldn't order again. The cajun potatoes were good. Pretty good prices for a seafood place. In all, it's worth your time if you're in town.

    (3)
  • Erickson D.

This is a busy place, so if you go here you need to go early I guess. We waited for more than half an hour before they call us for our table (most good restaurant do). I can't argue with that because the food are great and the people working here are awesome. Next time we will visit Mobile, Alabama we will definitely be back here again.. Love it.

    (4)
  • Shellene M.

Service was good and the place was nice but the food - not so much. Glad we tried it out but we won't be back. It is amazing to me how restaurants can just really screw up a salad! Ordered the entree size Half Shell Salad with seared tuna. The salad came with avocado and I couldn't find one speck. Also maybe only a cup of spring mix with way too much dressing. Husband ordered the fried seafood plate and it was ok - oysters were overcooked. Sweet potato creme brulee was tasty but too sweet for a meal side dish. Overall, prices and facility don't match the quality of the food.

    (2)
  • Rod T.

Amazing food! A must when in Mobile. Oysters sampler is a great start. Steaks are superb, I prefer the new orleans sauce. Redfish is off the chain, great wines, a nice place for a date or late evening meeting. Cheesecake is superb. Fine dinning at its best. Great taste of Mississippi with the causal lower class of Alabama infused for a great experience.

  • Susan K.

Rockefeller and Orleans are the best !!! Sat at the bar and interacted with the shuckers who gave us some samples. Their Rockefeller and grilled oysters are THE best. We drove over from Pensacola and are happy we did! Atmosphere beautiful.

  • Lorie P.

Excited to give this place a try but left disappointed. While we loved the energy, decor and general vibe, we were left hanging on our entree choices. Salads and sides were very yummy, but the grouper topped with lobster and asparagus was lukewarm, over cooked and very salty. The filet mignon was a complete disaster. Ordered medium rare it was dry and chewy and not that presentation could have made it better but that was nonexistent as well. If I return, it won't be for either of these items. Should've stuck with oysters.

Nice time here. Everything was delicious. Better than whats in the area.

  • Jim G.

We have been there twice. Excellent grilled seafood platter and had the grilled redfish the next night. Nice decor. Experienced staff. Won't need to go to causeway for good seafood now. Gumbo was full of seafood and tasted delicious. Even have a large room for groups.

  • Dan H.

Yes, this place is really as good as the reviews sound. I just had dinner there, had the seafood platter which was 3 grilled oysters, a grilled grouper filet, a crabcake and 6 fried shrimp, with sides of collard greens and steamed brocolli. It was delicious. The only gripe was the crabcake was a tad bit dry and needed more moisture/egg and heat. The food was outstanding, the service was great and the interior was very nice. They have the best homemade tartar sauce I've ever had. The bill after taxes was 27.50. This is unbeatable nowadays, in my opinion, for this level of dining. You will not regret eating here. I will be returning for another meal before I leave Mobile, for sure.

Really good experience. Atmosphere was nice and not overly loud. Chelsea was our server and was friendly and efficient. Enjoyed Top Shell Margarita, Dirty Vodka Martini with blue cheese olives and red wine. Ate fried green tomato and crab cakes app. as an entree (2 crab cakes and several tomato slices...plenty), Red Fish Orleans and seared tuna. Half shell salad with avocado and goat cheese was lovely. Sweet potato creme brûlée was nice, but slightly too sweet for me. Fried okra was good but a little heavy on the breading. Looking forward to our 2nd visit. Glad not to have to drive to the Causeway for really good seafood!

  • Mandy P.

This is a great new restaurant in the Mobile area! I have been twice now and it did not disappoint. I would recommend the bacon pecan crusted redfish. The only negative I have is that if you have kids be aware that the kids menu pricing does not include a drink. I was a little surprised to pay an additional $2.39 for my 14 month old's drink.

I have eaten at this restaurant 3 times , each time with the same experience. The restaurant was hot and the glare from the windows was terrible. Service was slow, waited 20 minutes for appetizer and 40 minutes for main meal. The food was ok .

  • Jon M.

Where do I start? When you walk in the decor reminds you of a French Quarter restaurant. The staff is excellent! We were seated promptly and our waiter (Jason) was first class! We started with the oysters Rockefeller and fried crab claws. We ordered (and split) a grilled seafood platter, the lobster bisque, and a Caesar salad. Everything was fabulous! We will be back and we will bring friends and family! The days of Mobilians having to travel to the Causeway for great seafood are over! This place is located at Airport and I-65 so it is easy to get to. Do yourself a favor and go eat here ASAP!

Another good seafood choice for Mobile. Half Shell has a lot of choices. I've Had the shrimp and grits and it was okay. I really liked the redfish orleans. The sauce is great. Also, the sweet potatoes are good (almost as good as Ruth's Chris)

The words disappointed comes to mind. Staff was not knowledge of menu. Food came out wrong and by the time server came to check on us I was already done with this place. Lots of problems and no management to be seen.

This is a busy place, so if you go here you need to go early I guess. We waited for more than half an hour before they call us for our table (most good restaurant do). I can't argue with that because the food are great and the people working here are awesome. Next time we will visit Mobile, Alabama we will definitely be back here again.. Love it.

Rockefeller and Orleans are the best !!! Sat at the bar and interacted with the shuckers who gave us some samples. Their Rockefeller and grilled oysters are THE best. We drove over from Pensacola and are happy we did! Atmosphere beautiful.

We have been there twice. Excellent grilled seafood platter and had the grilled redfish the next night. Nice decor. Experienced staff. Won't need to go to causeway for good seafood now. Gumbo was full of seafood and tasted delicious. Even have a large room for groups.
