What a beautiful restaurant in Mobile! Nestled in a little neighborhood with Speed Lumps to slow you down in this sleepy little area devoid of any hustle and bustle. Kitchen on George emits a soft glow on the corner it resides on welcoming guests into a home-like setting. There's great black & white photography of Mobile's yesteryears displayed along the walls. The front area is more social with a full-length bar you can sit at or a row of smaller dining tables where as they have more intimate dining areas in the back. We had the small joy (though my dinner guest was unawares) of sharing the front area with a celebrity though we played it cool. Coming from New Orleans, I'm very particular about some of the Southern dishes I enjoy, and tend to steer clear of shrimp and grits, but really enjoyed their blackened version of the dish! I liked that they left the tails off of their well-cooked shrimp so I didn't have to dig through my deliciously rich, creamy grits. We also ordered the seared duck breast entree that comes with sweet potato spoon bread. My favorite part of this dish was actually the sweet potato spoon bread, the likes I've never had before. I usually steer clear of the carb-y parts of dishes, but loved this bread and couldn't leave a crumb of it on the plate. Both dishes were great, though I would've been OK with the shrimp being more seasoned. We definitely overdid it ordering the tempura fried okra; a heaping plate of lightly-fried okra with a citrus soy dipping sauce that we definitely couldn't finish. Did I mention I had a Bloody Mary with bacon in it? Good thing I was wearing my stretchy skirt. While the menu is Southern, there is a hint of Asian influences in many of the dishes that was unexpected but pleasant. The staff was very kind and accommodating. I'm looking forward to returning to enjoy their fried chicken! I think this would be an absolute wonderful spot to enjoy a date night or drinks and small plates at the bar with a friend!

"Are we on a college campus?" were the exact words out of my colleague's mouth as I confirmed directions from my phone. "I don't think so" I said, "but I do think we're eating in that house up there on the corner." And yep, Kitchen On George is as close to going to dinner at a friend's house as you can get in Mobile - if your friend is a top notch chef and insists on crisp white linens for every meal. The posh atmosphere almost veered on stuffy, but the service was anything but. Eager young chefs-in-training glowed with endearing pride from the first pour of water to the last cleared plate, and their grins stretched ear to ear when delivering food. While we apparently missed the complimentary ciabatta bread others have raved about, we ordered the fried okra as a starter and received a plate absolutely overflowing with perfectly seasoned and fried wedges. The shrimp and grits were fantastic, but their richness made me thankful I was sharing. Though slightly cold when it arrived, the duck breast was delicious as well. I cannot say the same for my cocktail, which unfortunately left much to be desired. (Definitely stick with the wine list!) So why 3-stars? I ultimately had a tough time justifying the final bill with the caliber of the food. While nothing specifically missed the mark (eek, except for that cocktail) I would probably choose different dishes to sample next visit. Don't get me wrong, there will definitely be a next visit and I'd certainly recommend this be on your shortlist of restaurants to indulge in while in Mobile. I look forward to updating my review when that time comes!

Very nice place to have a quiet meal with the wife or for a business meal. Three of us went out to discuss after a long day at work. Pleasantly surprised with their soups and specially prepared catch of the day. Nice little atmosphere in a converted home along with students in externship from local culinary school. Def going back. I would recommend making a reservation and parking is tight.

This place rocked! Only having one night to choose a restaurant in Mobile I picked this place and I was not disappointed. It is in a cool historic neighborhood with a great atmosphere. Service was great. We started with the shrimp and grits. Wow! The sauce on them was fantastic. Next had the Fresh Catch Pontchartrain with a perfectly paired Cab sav. For dessert I had the Key Lime Pie Martini. It was out of this world. Just get one. You will not regret it. I just with I could have tried more of the menu as everything sounded so good!

Delectable! Five stars all around, fusion concept expertly inspired by local flavors, amazing taste, carefully crafted presentation, refined yet relaxed atmosphere, and outstanding service! Our choices included perfect crab cakes, crunchy outside with a soft balanced inside fried artichokes, melted Brie on grilled salmon salad with champagne vinaigrette, Cajun flavored crawfish on sweet-ish soft mirliton squash, golden fried oysters and duck spring rolls in Thai sauce. Restaurant serves as a final point for Culinard students and their dedication shows in every bite! We were just passing through and this restaurant made me wish we lived much closer!!!

We were just passing through the city, not planing on stopping but we got hungry. Searching on google this was the best option price and rate First of all our hostess saw us coming and opened the door for us. So adorable Our server Kassy ( I believe it's her name) was so nice and professional, she knows very well her menu and talks very nicely, too She gave us great recommendations for what to do in the city and for us who was just passing through the city we actually decided to go and see more. She suggested us to visit the Dauphin Island and we are in our way right now. We chose a the mix green goat cheese walnut salad, and comes with green sliced apples and a dressing the dressing in sweet and sour. My husband chose George burger and I chose fried green tomato bacon sandwich. Both were delicious!!!!! It comes with side of the most amazing fried potatoes "twists" I guess. It's not greasy, even for a fried food, crunchy and soft at the same time. So crazy. The place is neat, organized and professional. I would go there for nice dinner ( like a date ) ou fancy brunch. Loved it

Mobile is FULL of great restaurants and delicious Bloody Marys! One of our favorites is the one at Kitchen on George, a teaching restaurant for Culinard Culinary institute, which not only cooks up some awesome food but some serious cocktails. Their awesome bloody is made with their own mix and garnished with shrimp, bacon, and of course pickled okra.

We sought this place out because of the Yelp reviews, and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is in a charming old house in a charming old neighborhood, off the beaten path. Our waitress was Sabrina, who was wonderful! The restaurant wasn't very crowded and we were seated immediately. We didn't sample their extensive cocktail, wine, and beer menu as we still had some driving to do when we left. Great olive oil and bread to start, followed by shrimp and goat cheese grits as an appetizer. We caught the tail end of happy hour, so the grits were only $5-- an absolute steal! The grits were thick and rich, and the goat cheese was an inspired variation of the classic cheesy grits. There were a lot of plump, perfectly cooked blackened shrimp on top. They were very fresh and and very tasty. For our main courses, I had red snapper and my wife had jambalaya. My fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The jambalaya was a great blend of flavors and was a very large portion-- we couldn't finish it between us! So overall a great experience from start to finish... A charming Deep South feel with impeccable service and excellent food. Highly, highly recommended.

Great place... I've dined there three times and the only thing that really wasn't to my liking was the cheese cake... It wasn't what I'm used too, the taste and texture was way off from any other cheese cake I've had so, two thumbs down on that... Everything else I've had including the service was excellent... In fact I'm hitting brunch there Sunday... I say it safe to say try anything on the menu with confidence... Great job Kitchen on George...! I'd vote you Best of Mobile for fine dining...!

Kitchen on George has to be my favorite restaurant. I've never been so wowed by fresh and favorable cuisine. They have local food fresh from the farm and the restaurant is a teaching school for Virginia College. From the table cloths and glistening flatware to the service and beautiful presentation of each menu item, you never forget that you're in a five star restaurant. The restaurant looks like a large house in a residential neighborhood. We easily found street parking and the area is safe. A reservation is usually required but we always felt like we had the place to ourselves. Their menu changes frequently and they have excellent happy hour specials. We sampled the Shrimp and Grits, Tempura Fried Okra, Fried Oysters and Hummus. Every item was stellar. There were several standouts. The tempura fried okra was lightly fried and the slightly sweet dipping sauce complimented it divinely. The shrimp & grits was also phenomenal. The grits were fine-milled and the shrimp were cooked in a sauce of fresh churned butter and creamy cheese. The Jambalaya pasta was also delightful and stuffed with fresh crab and shrimp. The portion was so large, I made two meals out of it. They even made a hamburger for my picky eater even though it wasn't on the menu. The food tasted so good, we came back two nights in a row! It was perfect for our Anniversary. I highly recommend it, especially the happy hour menu. If I told you how cheap it was, we wouldn't be able to get a table!

Delicious, innovative food and world-class service in a relaxing, engaging atmosphere. We went for lunch and will go back for dinner- soon. If you are looking for an amazing dining experience, Kitchen on George is for you!

Upscale white tablecloth restaurant. it has pretentions but that's ok because it measures up to them. Service is attentive, the food is excellent. I had a B L and fried green tomato sandwich, perfectly made with top quality bacon. They are a farm to table restaurant and it shows in the quality. One warning, we were tourists and saw them here on yelp. We lucked out in that they had a cancellation. You really need to make reservations for this place.

Lovely restaurant. We were weary we were in the wrong area since it's located in a residential location but once we got in, the interior was beautiful and the service was great. We had blackened salmon which was perfectly cooked and soup de jour which was corn n clam chowder. Loved it. Our main was the blackened shrimp and goat cheese and pontchartrain catch of the day. Both were very good, though a bit salty. Loved everythin about this place except we felt the dishes were slightly overpriced.. especially for the amount that came out.. but still loved it. Totally would recommend it!

Great food! Good service! I had the Cajun catch of the day and it was so good! The location was kinda interesting. As we were driving up, we passed some ghetto looking neighborhood. We almost didn't wanna go there for dinner because we thought we were in the ghetto. But once you pass some street, you see nice houses and cars, and kitchen on George is right there! I'm glad we went in for dinner cuz it was really good

My sweet husband found this place on Yelp for our anniversary dinner and it sounded so interesting. It's in the middle of a quaint residential neighborhood. It's an older house converted into a lovely little restaurant. Great subtle lighting and nice simple, modern decor. This is a training ground for local culinary graduates that work with established chefs to create amazing food. Lots of local food (farm to table) and this place is adored by the local foodie crowd in Mobile. Our server Courtney was so great-attentive and sincere with excellent suggestions. Very knowledgeable service and so nice! I had the local brew, Truck Stop Honey beer, and my husband tried the Lazy Magnolia Southern Pecan beer, all very delicious and smooth. Smooth, succulent, and juicy are the words of the night! We started with the small plate menu items. Cajun battered fried gulf oysters with sriracha mayo over kale salad. Then moved on to the blackened gulf shrimp and grits with goat cheese and creole cream sauce. WOW, both of these small plates were beyond delicious and a couple of these make a great meal. The fresh oysters, even after battering and frying, were so juicy and tender. Such great quality fresh food and expert preparation. The blackened shrimp was perfectly spicy and tender, and down right magical when paired with goat cheese infused grits and topped with succulent creole cream. The goat cheese is from goats in the Birmingham Alabama area and the majority of products in the kitchen are locally sourced, so yay for local food. My husband had the Ponchartrain flounder topped with gulf shrimp, mushrooms, and cream sauce over rice. This was so good and fresh, but I was saving myself for dessert... So about dessert, we shared the warm triple chocolate brownie dessert with dark, milk, and white chocolate melted morsels and topped with vanilla bean ice cream and ripples of chocolate and caramel sauce. So soft and tender, baked just right. Perfect ending to an evening of sublime indulgences! Come here, seriously y'all!

Last night was our first time eating here, but will not be our last. We ordered a variety of small plates and one entree. We were impressed with it all, but especially the duck confit egg rolls and the salmon and brie salad. I have had shrimp and grits all over Mobile and these are easily the best I have had. The catch of the day entree did not disappoint and will be something we would want to try regularly. Our only disappointment was that they were out of the asparagus soup as our waiter's description made my mouth water. Their was an extensive dessert menu, but we opted to share the bread pudding. It was different from any I have had and was the first time I have had one served without some type of cream (ice, whipped, etc.) Still it was excellent and worth trying. They gave us a hearty portion that was easily shareable by 3 people as the end to our meal. The service was excellent. Friendly hostess and a waiter that put up with our quirkiness and gave us great attention. We drank only water, but he kept our glasses full and interacted well with us as we gushed over the food. We will definitely be back!

I'll get right to the point: Kitchen on George is the best ever. If you are anywhere in the Mobile area it's a must-do. Amazing! We started with the Alabama fried oysters and the tempura fried okra. Absolutely to die for. The oysters were particularly exquisite. I could have eaten myself into oblivion on those and the okra alone. But then I would have missed out on the wonderful entrees. We had the Alabama jerk catch of the day, served with pineapple rice and fried plantains, along with the Pontchartrain catch of the day, in a mushroom cream sauce. The fish varies daily but I don't think you can go wrong. Delicious. The chocolate pecan pie for dessert was divine. The best meal out I've ever had. Robyn, our server, was knowledgeable, professional, and exceptionally courteous. All in all the best restaurant meal I've ever experienced. I cannot wait to go back.

My experience here was decent. I have to take into account that this is a teaching restaurant. My crab and corn soup has several pieces of shell in it and the risotto was way to underdone, not al dente. They wanted to charge $20 for a chicken breast, some tomatoes, and risotto. Service was excellent though!

Kitchen on George was a wonderful restaurant! As others have mentioned, we were told this is a teaching kitchen right up front. That said, the food was excellent. We tried the fish and it was cooked perfectly, no dryness at all nor was it underdone. The seasoning was also perfect. Parking was easy since the restaurant appears to be in the middle of an uncrowded residential area. We walked in without reservations on what appeared to be a busy night and sat at the bar for about fifteen minutes before being seated. The bar itself was very nice, the bartenders were very attentive and knowledgeable about the local beers they had on tap. Based on other reviews, we tried the fried okra and it was as amazing as others had mentioned. I usually do not enjoy okra but this one was terrific. We also had the duck confit spring rolls and they were equally top notch. Service was also knowledgeable about the food being served and were very helpful with picking out menu items as I couldn't decide between the two different fish entrees I liked. Overall, an amazing experience, the food and service makes this restaurant exceptional. We will certainly return.

Very nice restaurant, definitely seems to be on par with anything else in Mobile. The crab cake appetizer was very good with 2 cakes that had different accompaniments and flavors. The Jerk Catch of the Day was excellent and duck was okay with good flavors from a nice rich red wine sauce and maque choux but the duck itself was tough. Portions were pretty good sized so we didn't do dessert, but I can say that the wine list was very nice and we had some good options by the glass. You may read that this is a "training kitchen" but really it seems like there are some externships here but it's a fully professional kitchen and serving staff which will ensure you have a great meal. Even the bread & olive oil was quite good.

I would absolutely recommend dining here! Great lunch menu, I'm really looking forward to dinner some time. Run by Virginia college culinary students who put great care into each dish. You will love it!

Very nice, relaxing, clean atmosphere. The menu changes based on season and the availability of fresh ingredients. I value this aspect in a restaurant. Too many places fail to focus enough on bringing high quality, fresh ingredients to the table. The dishes are usually very good to excellent, but sometimes they fall short. This, plus the sometimes mediocre wait service account for a missing fifth star. Still, there are not many restaurants in the area that are better, and the prices are very reasonable. Certainly a local restaurant that deserves support.

Have been here 4 times over the past two years (different visits to Mobile) and will always return because the staff, food and ambience are consistently excellent. We have enjoyed brunch, lunch and dinner here before and everything we have ordered has been delicious, fresh and perfectly seasoned. From the seafood to any red meat dish to the the vegetarian entrees- it's all been great. If it's not too hot we like sitting in the shade of the trees outside on their patio. Indoors is nice too though, very light and bright and it still feels like the charming house it used to be. Great bar space with big booths. Can't recommend this restaurant enough! See you the next time we're in town Clayton!

We stumbled on this place (with a lot of help from Yelp) whilst on a road trip up from New Orleans. What a find! It's located in an oldish neighborhood, and doesn't look much from the outside. But, walking in, we were astounded to find a lovely place with "white table cloth" service. Turns out, it is associated with the local university's culinary school. Our lunch meals were terrific. I have never had such a good Crab and Corn soup! My wife raved over her dish of Flounder on a bed of goat cheese grits. I wish we were local!

This spot was on point! Got in immediately, decor is simple but very inviting. Service is great, prices are super reasonable, and everything is farm to table. Duck confit spring rolls were delish, blackened shrimp w/ grits was a party in your mouth, and the fried chicken had that perfect crunchy crust, & savory goodness to it!

I wanted to try this place while in Mobile this summer, so I decided to endure the heat and humidity when I called last minute to get a reservation for 9 and all they had was outdoor seating. It was worth it! The fried okra was very good and the fried artichokes were also good, but not the best I've had. I had the Alabama goat cheese salad which was so yummy! Then I had the blackened shrimp and grits which were also very tasty and the shrimp was cooked perfectly! The creme brulee was very good, however the portion could have been slightly larger! This place isn't cheap but it isn't crazy expensive either. The server was amazing! I will definitely come back!

We found this place on yelp as we were searching for some half decent brunch in Mobile. Let's just say that our food experience in this town hadn't quite been what we had expected. However, when we found the Kitchen on George, our entire experience changed. Let me start by stating that the staff was awesome, from the hostess who greeted and sat us, to the chef who came to chat at our table for a bit... I was quite pleased! Our waitress was fabulous! She took care of our every need. We ordered everything on the menu, but the shrimp and grits were our fav! The coffee was so good I may have drank an entire pot. The fried green tomato BLT was probably one of the best things I've eaten in my life. Check for the pic and descriptions of all of the other food. This is most definitely a place I'll visit again and recommend to friends!

Being from Mobile and somewhat familiar with this spot's predecessor, we wanted to give it a try after reading the yelp reviews. My wife and I visited on a Wednesday night on the rare occasion for us to be in Mobile on a weekday. Marcie was our server and she was on top of things the entire night. She explained the restaurant's concept to us and made a couple of good specialty cocktail suggestions-Peach on the beach for my wife and a Garden district mojito for me. Both were superb. We tried several of the small plates (appetizers) and split a large plate (entree). The crab cakes were a bit small, but full of crab meat and very flavorful. The Alabama fried Oysters were large, straight from the Gulf, and wowed as anticipated. The shrimp in the blackened shrimp and grits were seasoned perfectly, but the grits were a bit too cheesy for my wife's liking, which brought our review done a bit on this one. We rounded out our small plate choices with the duck confit spring rolls which were simply amazing and a must try. For the entree, we had the Teres Major steak. It was prepared medium, as ordered and was very tender. While I'm not usually a fan of sauces on steaks, the red wine infused demi glaze was a great complement to this dish. The potatoes were good and the asparagus was perfectly grilled. We ended our meal with a triple chocolate brownie that was delish! It was very rich and was paired with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream, which couldn't keep pace with the brownie's richness, but Marcie was happy to oblige us with an extra scoop! Overall, we had a wonderful experience at KOG and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great spot with great food in Mobile.

Wow. What a hidden gem! But not for long! My SO and I Hail from Seattle and are driving cross country (for 2nd time) back home and have had a hard time finding quality ingredients being showcased anywhere. A learning kitchen helps culinary students gain experience but also flex their creativity and what a treat! We came for fried oysters and they were out of this world, shucked in house, breaded in Panko and fried just right for a crunchy crust and soft meat inside (and no runny guts). Before happy hour began we split the BLFried green tomato sandwich. ....tomatoes lightly fried to perfection and those fries were pretty special too, how'd they cut those?! Steve, the bartender atm, knew we wanted to come back in a few to enjoy the 4 o'clock happy hour but since we were almost the only people there, got it going a tad early. (Which was nice bc being on the road we were a bit under dressed for the dinner crowd that was rolling in about 430ish) Happy hour: 7 days a week starts at 4! $5 perfect portion plates. And drink specials to boot! Cheap wine, draft n special cocktails. As I mentioned, fried oysters, yummy ailoi, would do over and over again. Duck confiet rolls, yummy great sauces ...and shrimp n grits! Got very full by this point and they offered to doggie bag our last item :) always wana hug them when they letcha pack da happy hour food. I hardly rant and rave about a particular restaurant but they hands down deserve it here! BTW make reservations early, especially for weekends! They kept getting calls for requests for the Saturday night of and we're booked!

This review is going to be brief. The concept is neat: culinary school students get to practice their skills in a real kitchen. But don't worry- the food is amazing! Service was great! It is in a neat part of town close to an antebellum home; the whole neighborhood seemed historic.

A pleasant place to enjoy dinner or brunch. Food has been sometimes awesome- sometimes inconsistent on some of our visits over the time (we've been dining here for a while now...) but they have nice, comfortable atmosphere. It reminds me of something you'd see in that popular magazine that features life in the South; clean, elegant, comfortable. Good selection of reasonably priced everyday-wines by the glass to compliment your meal. This is a place I'd recommend for taking your parents out or maybe a date night.

On business in Mobile from Atlanta (one of the most underrated food and bev cities in the world btw), I thought I'd struggle to find decent eats in Mobile, AL. Some searching on Yelp and voila, Kitchen on George. The name referra to it's location (on George street), off a quiet street in a well to do neighborhood. Decor outside is simple and nice but the specials chalkboard right by the door gives me pause. Door is opened for me and a lovely hostess invites me to sit at the wood and marble bar. Place is cleanly decorated with soft jazz music echoing throughout the numerous connected dining rooms. Good start, I kinda like this place. Awfully young Barkeep asks what I'm having, and it's a Sazerac. Unfortunately, too strong and a swirly lemon peel twist says, "I'm trying too hard." I arrive 10 mins before Happy Hour ends, so I'm having the usually $12 crab cake app for $5. Nicely seared and tasty, but lukewarm and loaded with pepper and celery filler. A steal at $5 but questionable at $12. I get a local IPA on draft to accompany the Blackened Shrimp and Grits with their staple Crawfish Stuffed Mirliton (a type of local squash filled with seasoned crawfish tale). The former is very good, with light, fluffy and goat cheese grits. Shrimp is on point, seasoned and cooked magnificently. The latter is hard (the squash that is) and again lukewarm. To finish, a bread pudding that comes out alarmingly quick. Based on speed of prep and the varying temps throughout, it's clearly microwaved. Despite that, not overly sweet, even with the drizzle, cherries and white chocolate. Texture is good, little dry. By the end of the meal, the dining room is alive with chatter from the surrounding tables, clinking of glasses and all that jazz. If I lived in Mobile, I'd frequent this place regularly, particularly for happy hour! My initial feeling was, "well it's pretty damn good for Mobile, AL." Scratch that, "it's pretty damn good, period."

Overnighting on a trip to Florida, we spent an evening in Mobile. We had no real expectations after discovering KOG on Yelp. The restaurant is located in a very lovely old South neighborhood in a converted home. We were greeted by the welcoming staff and the dining room is modern yet respectful of the location. Its also immaculate, comfortable and not overly loud. Totally sold out on a monday night. Cuisine pays homage to Southern/Local foods with sophisticated touches. We grazed through dinner having the don't miss ham salad, the finest collard greens(with oddly placed salmon)we've ever tasted, unreal tempura okra(tender), expertly cooked duck breast with a sublime sweet potato spoon bread and then finished it all with wonderful scratch desserts(chocolate pecan pie & key lime pie) Chef Gillian Clark has a true understanding of flavors and how to make food taste very good. She is creative and clearly has researched & perfected this type of cuisine. Bartender/waiter Gary was helpful, friendly and had a real sense pride about working at KOG. KOG is special restaurant & a really memorable and highly unexpected experience.

I came here for brunch during the wrong hours. I was fortunately surprised. This is nearly a 5 star restaurant experience for a great deal. I had the blackened salmon. The portion was small but it was not expensive so I could easily order more plates or desserts. I had a great time. And they didn't care that I sat there and read two days worth of papers. -- Yes I was totally bag ladying -- it and they were absolutely nice about it. I'm easy to please. 5 stars.

A must for any visit to Mobile. I always do extensive research for local places when visiting a new city and Kitchen on George far exceeded my expections. I loved the neighborhhood where the restaurant was located with all the historic homes. The decor in the restaurant was simple and classy. Our waiter Zach was very friendly and helpful with ordering. We started out with Bloody Mary's - best I ever had. It was flavorful without being too spicy. We started out with the daily special - Crab Bisque OUTSTANDING. We ordered a cup and it was a very generous serving. My husband and I both ordered from the Small Plate portion of the menu and portion size was perfect since we had ordered soup. Since, I was in Mobile, I wanted to order Shrimp and Grits. The Blackened Shrimp and Grits with Alabama Goat Chees was to die for. My husband had a Salmon Brie salad with poached pears, dried cranberries and walnuts - unusual and delicious combo. We shared a delicious Chocolate Creme Brulee seasoned with a hint of cayenne. The restautant supports Culinard, the Culinary Institute of Virginia College in Mobile. I always love going to restaurants associated with Culinary Schoos - feel you get new and innovative menu ideas. All in all a great experience!!

I really loved this restaurant. It's a hidden gem inside a charming neighborhood. Service was excellent.. Food delicious! I had the lightly blackened redfish with the goat cheese grits and grilled veggies. So yummy! I've never tried goat cheese grits before and I'm really glad I did. I would maybe knock off half a star for the noise level - noisy large parties tend to echo in here but overall a great experience. I will definitely return on my next visit to Mobile!

We were driving through Mobile on I-10 heading to Orlando and stopped after seeing reviews. Great food made better by super flexible kitchen due to fantastic server Robyn. She proclaimed that they are a "Yes-taurant" not just a restaurant and quickly brought my wife an off-menu item cooked perfectly. Awesome!

I ate here today with my grandmother. We started out with the spring rolls and fried okra. Both were insanely good, cooked to perfection. We both ordered the salmon brie salad. I have to say it may have been the best salad I've had my whole life. I took a bite of the salmon first thing it melted in my mouth. I was literally flooded with joy, that's how good it was. I kept going back and forth between the pear, salad greens, and salmon till I was done. Absolutely incredible. Very proud that this establishment exist where I am from.

Bright, fresh, and airy atmosphere coupled with beautiful simplistic dishes that gets you back to basics. Having experienced my fair share of the "trends" and crazes and fushion-everything-everyday, I exclaimed in relief when the dessert menu featured: cake. Just a strawberry cake. With icing. Nothing was lit on fire. Rare nuts from the Amazon were not paired with equally obscure liquors in disappointingly small truffles. Lazy mousse desserts were avoided. No. Just cake. Thank goodness. Go.

What a surprise to find such good food and service tucked away in a residential area. I had afresh grouper with shrimp and lightly blackened. We will be back again when traveling in the area.

Very quaint little place with delicious food, great atmosphere, and really interesting idea. The culinary students work alongside the chefs to learn and deliver amazing plates. I went for lunch and had the salmon and brie salad....delicious! Highly recommend this cute little place. It's located back in a neighborhood but worth it. I will be back to try dinner soon!

We're visiting Mobile from Birmingham & went here based on reviews. The restaurant is beautiful but the food was terrible. We ordered the fried artichokes & the crawfish w/squash appetizers to start. The artichokes were poorly fried. They tasted like bar food. We had to add salt to the crawfish & squash app because it was soggy & under seasoned. We then received our entrees. My shrimp & goat cheese grits were a total miss. The grits were mushy & over cooked. The lemon butter sauce was more like an oil spill drowning my poor shrimp. My husband had the jerk fish dish. The jambalaya was also overcooked & drowned in butter, the fish had no sear, & the fried plantains were dry & stale. Thank goodness we ordered a bottle of rose because that was the saddest meal we've ever spent $150 on! Save your $ & don't make this mistake.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Kitchen on George and I would and have recommended to anyone and everyone! I was on a solo road trip and in Mobile for the night. Steven @ Berney Fly B & B recommended K on G to me and I am so SO glad that I went. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was lovely, and the staff were absolutely tremendous! I don't remember the last time I was treated with such professionalism, mingled with kindness and warmth. Simply the best in customer service and delicious food. I gaurantee I will make my way back to the Kitchen on George! Shout out to my wonderful server Sabrina! She was the BEST!

The blackened shrimp with goat cheese grits and fried oysters were really good. Its small plates style and upscale with white table clothes. But I don't think they minded me (tourist) stopping by. They have a cute small patio with 4 tables. The sun was out and I was lucky enough to be seated outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. There was no wait. Wait staff is a bit slow, but looked like the manager pitched in and made sure I got my food in time for my tour of the near by historic homes. Pleasant lunch, glad I stopped. Worth the prices!

Having read all the reviews and as a visiting foodie from Seattle, I was looking forward to an excellent meal and was not disappointed. We were promptly greeted by a very welcoming hostess and shown to our table in the charming rear room of the house overlooking the courtyard. The minimalist decor showcases an interesting collection of historic photos. Our server, Matthew, was outstanding. Friendly, professional, efficient and well versed in the menu/preparations. The small squash stuffed with crawfish, celery and onion was light, ample, flavorful and made for a nice alternative to a salad. My entrée was the fresh catch of the day, grouper, served over pineapple and cilantro rice (not overly sweet) and delicious fried plantains. The fish was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The rest of my party enjoyed the short ribs, pork tenderloin and curried tofu entrees. Everyone was quite pleased. Crème Brule (velvety smooth) and bread pudding were delicious ends to a leisurely Sunday dinner. Overall I would say the price points are very reasonable for the quality of the food, casually elegant atmosphere and service. Really, my only negative was the cost of cocktails. A Maker's Manhattan was $13 and a Grey Goose Martini was $14. A tad high for this market? While not overly ample, they were VERY well made (the best I have found in Mobile thus far). In the future, I'll sacrifice the cocktail and order an additional course. That's where the real value is at this kitchen.

After my third trip to Kitchen on George, I can heartily reccomend it as one the best upscale restaurants in Mobile. The food has been consistently delicious. This isn't the most inventive restaurant in the city, and it's not supposed to be. It's an educational environment for students to hone their fundamentals, and the food they produce certainly shows they're accomplishing that! If I could sum up the food in one word, it would be "solid." That's what you get here. Solid, consistent, delicious fare. I have had delicious salmon, short ribs, shrimp and grits, friend green tomatoes, and bread pudding (especially delicious!). The service is always warm and attentive, and the waits between courses are very reasonable. The restaurant itself is very beautiful. It's open and airy with mostly white and natural wood throughout. The lighting is perfect, very warm and inviting. It resides in the wonderful Okleigh neighborhood, and is one door down from a wonderful coffee shop called Cream and Sugar. Finally, I have to mention the fact that all of the above comes at a very reasonable price. If I remember correctly, the most expensive entree is around $22. There are several reasonable and delicious wines by the glass as well. Kitchen on George is a wonderful establishment that I am very happy to see thriving. Do yourself a favor and book a table tonight, I highly doubt you'll be dissappointed.

From the atmosphere to the incredible food to the quick service, Kitchen on George was a fun and fantastic experience! The Duck confit spring rolls were unique and delicious. The catch of the day was cooked perfectly and the blackened shrimp and grits (which I've had a numerous restaurants) was the best I've had. We ended with the cheesecake which was VERY good. Our server was attentive but not overwhelming. The restaurant was not crowded and it became an instant favorite place to eat.

A great restaurant tucked into a cozy neighborhood. Our table of 5 did not make reservations. Well, for a Saturday night, perhaps we should have as it was quite a wait. The front of house however, was communicative and apologetic. Hey, it's a weekend night, it wasn't that big a deal! After sitting, our waiter was attentive and friendly. You can order a couple small plates or have a large plate. The wine list is adequate, something for everyone! I had the spinach and goat cheese salad (great vinaigrette) as well as the shrimp and grits. Probably one of the better shrimp and grit plates I've ever had! (I've had plenty). The crab cakes as well as the duck breast were also ordered at the table and they were raved about. We had a small order of tempura asparagus for sharing, tasty indeed! Overall, a really lovely night at this establishment. I hope they continue to do so well!

I had the opportunity to enjoy Kitchen on George twice in one weekend while in town for the Godaddy Bowl: dinner and brunch. Both meals were with larger groups and were outstanding. For dinner, I had the Chef Special - Jamabayla - and was reminded why this dish should only be enjoyed in the South. It was nicely complex - fresh, rich, creamy, spicy. But brunch trumped the weekend with an amazing French Toast dish - mine topped with blueberry compote. The atmosphere is very Urban - a pleasant and unexpected surprise. I almost rated my visit 4 stars because my dinner arrived so late compared with the rest of my party, but the rest of the group received very good service and the staff was attentive for brunch.

This little Oakleigh Neighborhood treasure caught my eye on Yelp. I'm so happy I chose this place for an Sunday evening dinner. The ambiance is nice and modern. The stuffed flounder was awesome! However, the green bean almondine was just "okay". I would have like the choice of another side dish. Our waitress was REALLY nice. I'll def be back

Came here after a long night at Bayfest and was admittedly hurting a little bit, but the food was really good. The place was a little fancier than it really deserved to be, but at least they weren't pretentious about our T-shirts + jeans. I really wanted the coffee too be better (should have just gone next door to Cream + Sugar). I got the French toast with bananas foster, which was amazingly good - the bananas even had a nice crispness to their glaze. Our waiter was great too.

To be honest I was a little disappointed. From all the nappies and great reviews I expected better. However, the service was pretty good, and the herb marinated chicken was delicious except for the excess of couscous and the limited amount of couscous. However the portion size is awful. Sad really. I would expect a little more. My date ordered the tenderloin and while it did taste great, it was small. Its still a cool restaurant in the heart of a historic area, however.

I absolutely blew through my per diem on dinner here and I have no regrets. I'm not from Mobile and were it not for their presence on Open Table (and my disdain for waiting), I would not have made it here. The restaurant is tucked away in a residential area in a tastefully repurposed home. I took the opportunity to enjoy the duck confit spring rolls (rolled in house), green and bib lettuce salad with rosemary bread (which I could have eaten my weight in) and the shrimp and goat cheese grits that were - without exception - the best I've ever had. I did partake of the cherry bread pudding which was good but I could have gone back for another plate from the menu. There was not a single aspect of the meal that I did not enjoy and I look forward to creating an excuse to come back to Mobile for another visit.

Best meal I've had in my 4 months living in mobile. Had an appetizer stuffed squash, some type of squash I've never tried before. It was awesome. Myself and my significant other both had fish, she the salmon and a local fish for me served with plantains. They were both delicious, though the local fish was prepared the best. Will definitely be going back. Oh and they have a cute little outdoor seating area out back.

My family decided to grab something to eat and decided on this place because one of my cousins said the food was great here. When we arrived there were no tables available for our party of 10. The bar was empty so we sat there and ordered appetizers & drinks. Great service & food. We would definitely go back here again and have dinner.

Second time here...Dinner was quite Divine. Our taste buds/palettes had a party! The food was on point. Our appetizers miso glazed salmon was delicious. Our entree.. I had the Alabama Jerk Grouper! Served with pineapple rice and plantains with a cilantro lime sauce! Cooked to perfection. Husband had the Pork tenderloin- seared and crusted with their homemade red wine BBQ sauce. Conecuh and pepper sauté served with a side of mashed potatoes. Delectable! We also had complimentary grand merrier creme brûlée to celebrate our anniversary. Service was great and prices are reasonable. Really made our anniversary a great day! Thank you.

Went for Brunch and the food was excellent. The highlights were the poached eggs with spinach and the crab cakes. If your there for brunch get the crab cakes with poached eggs which may or may not be printed on the menu combining the best of both meals. We also had the tuna and spring rolls and the blueberry french toast, both of which I have had better elsewhere. Overall a perfect after church family restaurant.

Love this place. Ambience is great. Service is phenomenal. Greeter is amazing. Food is great. And better yet, they have (at least when I went) bread pudding for after dinner dessert!!! That's all I wanted on this trip to the South and boy did I get it. Couldn't stop eating it once i started. oops. They had pumpkin creme brûlée. My jerk chicken was very good which came with papaya sauce and some apricot sauce on the side. You all must try the black bean hummus. Extensive alcohol selection!

A great local business. We went the night LSU was playing Alabama last fall so it wasn't that crowded. Had a sitter and did date night. One of the nicest places we have been to in Mobile. My wife and I stuck to the tapas and we were impressed with the variety and quality of the food. The owner/chef even came over and asked how everything was. Service was prompt and professional. The waitress was very familiar with the menu and made some good recommendations.

Went last night with my sig other for V-Day and man was it amazing. We had reservations and were sat promptly. Albeit a bit noisy, the seating is well placed and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The staff was very attentive despite the steady flow of patrons and our food came out in record time. We did a sampling of the small plates including the Wok Broccoli (incredible flavor), Tempura Asparagus (light, crunchy, and delicious), Alabama Salad (not quite as impressive as the rest of the food but still tasty), Spring Rolls (amazingly refreshing, excellent sauces), and our absolute favorite of the night...the Grilled Shrimp and Butter Corn "City" grits (goat cheese polenta). HOLY CRAP. They were incredible. The polenta was ridiculously creamy and the shrimp was plump and cooked to perfection. For dessert, which we miraculously found room for, we had two V-Day dessert specials..first the Grand Mariner Creme Brulee. It was pretty decent though a bit too sweet. We then had the two layered caramel buttercream cake with white chocolate ganache and strawberries. It was ridiculous. Loved it. It was a great Valentine's Day experience, and the price was actually less than we expected (which is always nice). I will absolutely be back to Kitchen on George, and hopefully soon.

Wow! The shrimp and grits here were simply amazing. I wanted to lick the bowl. I ate at the bar as I usually do when traveling. Poor FiFi (bartender) was a little overwhelmed; but she was covering the service bar, the bar customers and she had tables... Craziness. As a former bar manager and server this is way too much but she pulled it off like a champ. I also had fried green tomatoes which were a special and were also delicious. Overall, great food, great service for a former fine dining employee

I had Sunday Brunch here with my daughter and her husband. It was the first time any of us had dined here. The location is a bit misleading, in a residential neighborhood but once you step inside you are taken away to another inviting world. I had their French Toast with strawberries which was generous in portion and very delicious and filling. Highly recommend!!

My dad and I were passing through Mobile on the way to New Orleans, and decided to stay for the night. We chose Kitchen on George because it got pretty good yelp reviews, but didn't get our hopes up. Mobile is a smaller town than we're used to (Chicago), so we didn't think they could do much in the way of food. We were so wrong. I NEVER thought that we could find food like this in a town like Mobile. I'm a vegetarian, so we ordered five "small plates." (two per person would have been okay, we ended up with leftovers.) We ordered the papaya salad, the Alabama goat cheese salad (reminiscent of a Waldorf, but better), wok broccoli, tempura fried vegetables, and the edamame. The papaya salad was terrific, and each dish was just better than the last. I would highly recommend everything we ordered, but if I were to recommend one, it would be the edamame. It is 'to die for.' My dad and I kept commenting that this is the kind of thing you would find in a fancy Asian restaurant in downtown Chicago. It is fairly spicy, but absolutely delicious. You would be remiss not to try it. Tip: they've changed their reservation policies, so any party can make a reservation. I would recommend doing so, as we saw 2-3 party being seated at the bar while they waited for a table. But if I ever happen to be in Mobile again, I would definitely eat at Kitchen on George.

It's really 4.75 star. The shrimp and grits were to die for! The spring rolls were superb! The salmon salad was perfect. The waiter was delightful except he kept saying things like, "How are we tonight? Have we been here before?". I knew the answer about us but I can't answer for him and I suspect he has been there before since he works there. Putting that annoyance aside, I really liked him. I loved the Lemongrass ginger martini which had a delectable blend of flavors and my friend enjoyed her $13 glass of wine which I don't know the name. The atmosphere is fresh and delightful and we enjoyed finding this treasure. Our only complaint was the peach creme brûlée. It was too thin, too loose, and the crust wasn't really there. A disappointment to the end of the meal but we are creme brûlée snobs as it is our favorite desert for each of us. If I lived in Mobile, this would surely be my favorite restaurant.

What a great place! The menu changes frequently but has some incredible staples too, try the shrimp and grits they are amazing! Solid atmosphere, good drinks, great concept. Kitchen on George compares well to similar restaurants in much bigger cities and I usually take my out of town guest there.

One word can describe this place "phenomenal" I took my wife here and the food was excellent. we started with the Wok Broccoli and some kind of spring roll wrap while eating that the waiter brought us out the salmon, free of charge because he had had some extra left . then i had he flank steak while my wife had the pork tenderloin. I would recommend this place. service A+ food A+ price A+

Stopped in for a celebratory dinner. I had just moved to Mobile from NYC, and welp... let's face it, I'm skeptical/curious whether the cuisine in L.A. can cut it. After eating at Kitchen on George, I might just be a Mobile convert. We were seated in the front of the restaurant near the bar and I really enjoyed the space and modern decor. There are more than a dozen wines by the glass and unique cocktails to try, like a gimlet made with wild tea absolut. The food was terrific. We split the sugar snap pea appetizer and they were nicely seasoned, crunchy and delicious. My flounder was amazing! First of all - it is a large portion of fish. Again, maybe my NY eyes need to adjust, but it is a heaping portion for $18. I was super excited to dive into it. It was blackened and seasoned really nicely and cooked perflectly. I happily took home half for leftovers. My boyfriend had the gumbo, which was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. We skipped dessert, but I'll be back to try that NY cheesecake and gimlet.

We went for dinner on a busy Saturday night. The place was packed, but no wait for Courtyard seating. The service was good. I was surprised that my favorite thing of the evening was the green beans, and I'm not a green bean fan. They were superb! We plan to add this to our list of regular restaurants to frequent.

We have dined here probably 3 times since my last review and it was excellent each time. It might be the best restaurant in Mobile right now. Yes it's that good. Friendly service, delicious food and great environment. Only downside if the cost of draft beer. The insane beer prices costs KOG 5 stars

This place was a find. My wife and I have been traveling through the south for a while. We have had some wonderful food, but everything has been very rich and/or fried. It was great to find a place that had a flair for vegetables. We made a meal of the papaya salad and appetizers accompanied by a great Australian Chardonnay. We had tempura asparagus, the batter was light and tasty and the dipping sauce was flavorful. The wok broccoli is a must. The duck confit spring rolls were also divine. Also, the setting was quite pleasant and quaint and the staff was helpful and friendly.

Kitchen on George is a restaurant in the Oakleigh district of Mobile that has a great atmosphere and tasty food for a great price. They specialize in typical Gulf Coast cuisine. You should give this place a try! Food: Great menu with a good variety of meats and seafood. As an appetizer we had a goat cheese, apple, and arugula salad with a balsamic vinaigrette that was well portioned and very tasty. We had a fried calamari dish with a very tasty sweet and spicy Thai sauce. The calamari was fresh, well cooked and breaded. The flank steak with lemon grass was well prepared and tasty with a really great sauce, and the grilled snap peas served with it were delicious, while the potatoes were a little cold. I will say, the fried oyster appetizer was really disappointing, and some of the worst fried oysters I've had in a local restaurant. The oysters were overcooked and far over-breaded with a floury soft crust, served with a bland remoulade sauce. I'll be honest, if it weren't for the oysters, I'd have given them four stars, so take my three stars with that in mind, but at $2 an oyster, let's do them right, especially given the city's tradition of fine oysters. Service: Good, a little talky, but that might be your thing. Atmosphere: Really nice, tucked in a corner of the Oakleigh district of Mobile in a New Orleans-style restaurant. Great casual atmosphere that could be dressy or not, with a nice court yard. Moderate to loud noise level. Drink selection: A handful of good beers on tap and a nice wine list Bottom line: I'll come back for sure. This restaurant came close to four stars given the success of most of my meal, and perhaps they'll get it next time. For a restaurant that has just opened up in a normally restaurant-unfriendly town, they are doing really well with tasty food for a great price. They are A-OK, and you should give them a visit and support your local independent restaurants.

Would like to give a great review, but I'm disappointed. The atmosphere was very nice and this would have been a great place to visit regularly. However, sadly the menu items are terribly over-priced. The "small" plates were reasonable but the "large" plates had no reason to be the prices they were. Very small portions & for two people, water (no alcohol), one small plate & two large plates our bill was $75. My husband's beef tenderloin was undercooked (he asked for medium & it came out rare), topping was cold, & again a very small portion- $27!!! He left unsatisfied. We will not return & will warn others of the pricey menu.

Very good food, service ok.n We are there Sunday evening ( nice to find any good options on a Sunday in Mobile ) and had good food. The spring rolls were nice and refreshing, the crab cakes were nice too for apps. The main dish of pork tenderloin was relish and the potatoes on the side were super. The service was ok and even though a slow night no manager came by to see if we were all happy. Maybe I expect too much maybe should be happy for just good food( maybe not).

SO GOOD! The food is always fresh and well prepared. The service is always excellent. Not to mention the really great location in the Garden District and the great prices. We eat here often and have never been disappointed. I am a huge fan of Kitchen on George!

Went for brunch this morning around 11. First of all they do not serve alcohol before 12 like all of the other restaurants in the area. The server was rude and acted as though we were putting her out whenever we asked for something. We ordered an appetizer around 11:15 and it took 30 minutes to arrive. Our entree took another 45 minutes to arrive. We ordered mimosas at 12 and they took 10 minutes to arrive even though our server was the bartender and the restaurant was practically empty. The only redeeming quality about the experience is that the food was good. That is why I gave it the 1 star. I would not recommend this restaurant. I was very disappointed since it had gotten so many good reviews.

The entrees are excellent and the place is beautiful. We had excellent service but the downfall was a very poor dessert for all 4 of us. The desserts are not worthy of the entree.

Great ambiance. Polite staff. This place is great. Even the bathroom smelled good AND had soap : ) My friend and I shared four things: The meal started with complimentary ciabatta bread with olive oil and homemade spices. A nice way to start the meal, awakening my taste buds to good things to come. The duck confit spring rolls were great. The only downside was that the duck was over cooked and there wasn't enough filler to compliment the duck. The shrimp and grits were the definition of a great marriage. Spicy, blackened shrimp were the perfect compliment to the creamy goat cheese grits. The fried chicken with collard greens and corn bread was reminiscent of a Sunday dinner in any southern household. The only downside was the skin of the chicken could've been crispier and it kept sliding off. The greens however, we're slap your mama good.
