This property once housed Samurai Jack's (sushi), and I really liked the way they had their dining area set up. Dumbwaiter gutted the place and did a complete remodel. The result is a trendy, open interior more like the restaurants you see in Atlanta or Nashville, which is a nice change from the 4-5 floor-plans you usually see in Mobile. Reservations are definitely recommended. We were seated at about 11:30, and every table was occupied by the time we left. Service was excellent. The waitstaff was very knowledgeable, and helpful with both menu items, and specials. Service was fast and attentive even when things were hopping. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the ingredients, and the skill of preparation. Portions were generous without being ridiculous. The menu was diverse, and both modern and traditional at the same time. This is a restaurant you'll return to just so you can try everything on the menu. The food was very good. Once again, more like what you would see in Nashville, Atlanta, and even New Orleans. Everyone had the special (Pan-seared black drum with cheese grits, and bacon caramel green beans). Everything was cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly, and plated perfectly. Ingredients were fresh, and of high quality. I'll certainly be back.

The meal we had at Dumbwaiter makes me reconsider ever dining out again. Every chair should include a towel on the cushion, to equip diners for the lingering after-effects of the ultimate foodgasm here. Ambience and decor: modern rustic. Front of house staff: friendly, welcoming, indulgent. Back of house: jovial and imbued with camaraderie in their mission to delight. The intention to do right by the dining public permeates every cell of this place. We were seated at Table 13 on a Tuesday evening, served by Paula, whose insights to the menu were on point throughout the meal. The wine list provided suitable variety in quality and price, fit for any palate or pairing. The welcome basket consisted of half-inch thick cornbread triangles and housemade fresh fried pork rinds. (Yes, I said PORK RINDS.) The cornbread presented as a refreshing contrast to the overdone strip mall fare that delights the lowbrow palate with mix-ins such as corn kernels and jalapenos and oddity-infused butter. None of that nonsense here. A cornmeal bread. Not sweetened. Not fluffed up. On the order of a scone. With an uncomplicated honey butter. Simple, with an intentional blandness designed to make a statement. A cornbread that says, almost defiantly, "We got this." A portent of the magnificence yet to come. Housemade FRESH PORK RINDS. I did not know that a version of this Great American Snack Food could delight me. My only prior encounters had been at the hands of cellophane-bagged snackeries. Meh. But this! A freshly-fried pork rind is a crispy, light, airy, porky, crunchy morsel that makes you glad to have been raised Protestant. Forget good manners and rudely take the last one from the basket. (YOLO my friends.) The fried green tomato stack combined a cajun sauuce and mozarella into a lightly-breaded, stringy-cheesed tease. Beautifully presented and the right balance of salty and acidic, chewy and crispy. Standalone greatness, but far overshadowed by our entrees. We tried the pan fried trout (catch of the day) and dual filet medallions named "beef tournedos" on the menu. "Melt in your mouth" does not do either of these justice. Both made one desire gluttony as that mortal sin which would cause one's demise. The beef demiglace called for a very impolite spoon pass for the final ounces...it was THAT good. The lightly peppered seafood sauce atop the trout was toe-curling, eye-rolling yummy. The texture of these protein courses was perfection. And now, for the sides. I'd pay for a plane ticket JUST to eat at this restaurant. They made me consider a second home in Mobile. The sides. Oh, these sides! Green beans with bacon and caramel. No, not caramelized bacon. Bacon AND caramel. Who came up with this?! An angel come to Earth, to give pleasure to humans, that's who!The caramel sauce, so light it looked like nothing but melted butter, was offset by brazenly salty, substantial bacon ends that brought a vigor to beans never before encountered. This dish inspired more thankful prayers that my beliefs do not forbid swine consumption. Goat cheese and scallion mashed potatoes. Yes, they went there. This creamy concoction of skin-on reds lived in that sublime space between smashed and whipped that massaged the taste buds with textural supremacy. This dish will make you wonder WHY you never thought of doing this at home, and urge you to try with all your might to duplicate their texture and flavor. Nothing short of haunting. GRITS OF THE DIVINE ALMIGHTY. Cheese grits. I am teary-eyed still, just thinking of them. They have ruined me for any other grits, ever. They had a smoky, cheesy flavor that I simply could not deconstruct, against a texture that was so smooth that you'd swear they had no business being named "grits." Paula and Victor (chef) upheld the secrecy of their origins, despite my pleas. It was like when you meet that one special someone, and you know, that your life and the ways you live will never be the same because they have crossed your path. That is these grits. I simply won't be able to tolerate any other grits after this. And I may drive myself mad attempting to figure out and imitate their unmatched glory. I had to meet the men and women who had prepared this food! They were SO appreciative... so delighted that they had dazzled and satiated...so utterly gracious, kind and loving in their reactions. Their smiles were as bold and grand as the meals they had prepared. Their positivity came through in every bite. I pray for their continued success! I promise you, Mobile, I will return just to visit Dumbwaiter again. Until then, I may shed several dozen pounds, because the pleasure of eating will never be quite the same as it was that muggy July night I graced its doorstep. Mobile-ians, Alabamians, and any and all visitors, I implore thee: PLEASE do yourself a favor and patronize this establishment. Please support this treasure so that it can amaze and delight us all in the years to come.

Pardon my French, but holy s**t Mobilians, drop whatever you are eating and head immediately to Dumbwaiter. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. In fact, let me use a quick personal story to illustrate just how good one particular dish was: If presented with an option better than what he's chewing on, my 18-month-old will unceremoniously spit out what he's eating in favor of saving room for what's to come. And if acceptable for adults, the Brussels sprouts served here were definitely spit-out-other-food worthy. Other highlights included the green tomato stack with mozzarella and sausage and crab cream sauce, and the locally farmed Gulf oysters. Also, it's just sexy here. Like, be-careful-because-you-might-spontaneously-become-pregnant sexy. The low lights, the exposed brick, the beautiful typography everywhere, I'd better be careful because I already have my hands full with one child. Book ahead because by 7pm on a Tuesday every seat was full. And for good reason.

Great Food Experience in Alabama. Working in Alabama from time to time gives me the opportunity to try new things. Dumbwaiter has some unique takes on traditional Southern cuisine. From Brussel sprouts dripping in a bacon jam to an Alabama Eggs Bendict, this is a great place to try something new. On a side note, wait for the waitress to announce the chef specials. They rotate a lot of foods. Get there early for lunch.

It was very pleasant experience, and pretty expensive at the same time. But if you want to go on the date there, you'd better reserve table, cause after 7pm you have to wait at least one hour. Well it's worth it!

Modern barn vibe, lots of wood and metal. I had the Duck Hot Wings and a whiskey ginger. Two big duck legs in a mild buffalo sauce. Not so hot, but lots of flavor. Perfect portion if you're in the mood for a savory snack.

Ok. Atmosphere was good and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, but the acoustics were not so great. woodwork is a nice touch. I hear the Brussels are really good. Try and decide for yourself.

We made lunch reservations at Dumbwaiter, based on all the wonderful reviews. Well, we showed up on time and everything went downhill from there. It took forever to place our orders. Our waitress did not know how to pronounce "brioche" while describing the special. That should have been the first red flag. Our orders were taken -- a simple burger and the 2 specials on the bbb. bread ( the one the waitress could not pronounce). 15-20 mins later, the food comes out. The burger is cooked perfectly. The French fries that actually do not come with the burger and my friend was blindly upsold on those were nasty, limp, oily and almost cold. Major turn off. My other friend and I, had ordered one of the specials -- fillet, sliced, with blue cheese and fig confit on the brioche bun. It was good for a couple bites, after that, it became too much and too sweet and did not taste that good anymore. The quality of the meat, both fillet and the burger, was very good. Brioche was good and fresh also. The service remained slow through out the lunch. We barely got checked on. Waters stood empty for quite some time and one of us ended up drinking another person's water. That's very bad service in my books. Between the 3 of us, none of us are going back any time soon.

Great meal at the dumb waiter restaurant. This place never disappoints. Celeste was our waitress ; very kind. There were a number of items on the menu that look interesting but if you want something simple like a burger they have too. Enjoy!

I have been here a few times for both lunch and dinner - it has always been great! Food is very good and the menu has great variety so almost everyone can find something they like. Servers are always friendly and attentive. I also love that it is a non-chain restaurant in Mobile and always crowded. Please keep them busy - I know I will!

Went here for lunch on a Saturday. Ordered the Shrimp n Grits. Dish had nice creamy grits, andouille, and shrimp. Quite a few restaurants in this area put their own spin on this dish. So far, this has to be the best shrimp n grits in Mobile. The lunch menu has something for everyone taste buds. Prices are decent and won't break your wallet. Service was good. Only issue is the parking. Not too many spots available, so you may have to park and walk a little distance.

We sat at the bar because the restaurant was booked for the night.. on a Tuesday! This is one of the new places to be in Mobile. Fantastic service at the bar. We had tapas that were well prepared; scallops, fried green toms, and Brussels sprouts. Very nice wine and cocktail selections.

They have only been open a short time and as with any establishment they are working out the kinks. My first experience was a so good I had to come back. I'm very impressed with the menu and service. Wes Lambert (the manager I believe) took the time to make sure that I was treated like a regular. The bartender remembered my name and made me feel like family. As a traveler I can't tell you how much that means. If you are I'm Mobile and want a great meal in a unique atmosphere you have to check this place out!

Great food and service!! We had a large party and they were able to get us an early reservation on Friday night. Miranda (I think that was her name...she had glasses and dark hair) was awesome with our large group. Food was on point. I recommend the frites, if they are on special, and the Brussels sprouts. The shrimp and grits were delicious! We also loved the corn and crab bisque. Can't wait to go back!!

Dumbwaiter is a new, hot spot in Downtown Mobile. And we have needed something like it for a long time! The food is delicious and has every thing from market fresh oysters to sautéed Brussels sprouts that will BLOW YOUR MIND! I definitely recommend this spot for a date night or just a great beginning to a night out on the town. You will not be disappointed.

If you haven't been here, run! I ordered the Ribeye, green beans, fresh cut fries, Ceasar salad, and Blueberry cream pie in a jar for dessert. I honestly enjoyed every scrap! The ambiance is nice, with a business casual attire. My meal was a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. I'll certainly be back next time in town!

Went with some co-workers that raved about it the entire day. Now I know why. The brussel sprouts! I have never eaten a brussel sprout that I liked until that day. They tasted like bacon. I also had the Alabama Benedict. It was just as amazing. It was a little more than I would normally spend on lunch but I left extremely satisfied and full. I can't wait to have an excuse to go again.

So I'll start by saying that I've lived in Atlanta for the last 20 years and that I enjoy food and dining in general. My parents live in Mobile and I visit often. We were quite excited when we heard about dumbwaiter. My family has been twice and they have taken me once. Sadly I was quite disappointed by both the food and the service. To begin with, it took an inordinately long amount of time before they brought us our drinks. Then, I had the beef tournados and they were dried out and tough. I do try to give the restaurants in Mobile a fair chance and don't compare them to what's available in Atlanta. But what has really made my family decide that we will never try dumbwaiter again was actually two separate occasions when we were not dining there. Both times we had dined elsewhere in the area and simply wanted an after dinner drink in a quiet, upscale atmosphere. We stopped into dumbwaiter the first time around 10:45p and were promptly turned away despite the fact that there were still plenty of diners in the restaurant. We decided to try it again tonight (which I guess was stupid on our part) because it was earlier. We made it all the way to the bar (which was full with the exception of the three seats we chose) and sat there for a minute. A waiter finally came over and *very* rudely informed us that they "stopped seating an hour ago." I explained that we did not want to eat, but only wanted a drink and he even more rudely told us no. I was quite offended and insulted at this point. And let me reiterate that this was my parents (a lovely 70 year old couple) and myself (a 40 year old professional woman). It's very sad to think that Mobile will never grow and become a city to visit if this is the attitude of the restaurants.

I went there this weekend after missing my first reservation a couple of weeks ago. The food was good. The atmosphere was, as my daughter described, hipster. I would have described it as a bit contrived. It was also super loud. I would suggest some baffling techniques that don't take away from the feel of the place. I had the filet. It was very flavorful and cooked just right. For sides I had the tomato risotto. It was was perfectly risotto. I also had green beans. They were different tasting. They were sweet with bits of tomato and bacon. I am not sure if they were supposed to be a little cool and wrinkly, but I felt like they may have been pre cooked. The other people in the party had the hook to table, which was redfish and very good as well.; seared tuna sandwich (the bite I had was awesome); shrimp and grits, the chef special and very good. There was no bread, but they had chicarones instead. That was cool. I loved it and will go back for sure.

As often happens after you recommend a restaurant, you dine with friends and it disappoints. This was true Saturday evening. On our first visit, Dumbwaiter had potential, the scallops were perfectly cooked, the Brussels sprouts were as tasty as the reviews and the oysters were fresh and delicious. The beef tournedos were flavorful but over salted. One quirk was an opened Belle Glos Pinot Noir we viewed while sitting at the bar. We asked the bar tender if we could buy a glass, since it was not listed by the glass on the menu. Oddly the bottle disappeared after requesting a second glass, confounding the bartender as well as us. (apology) On visit two, it was just one thing after another. Ordered a glass of wine, not available.(apology) Made another selection, not available. (apology) Order a bottle, not available (apology), order another bottle, not available (apology). Finally order the Cakebread chardonnay and was granted a 15% price break after asking management. Not offered, but asked and received. (manager apology) One guest ordered the blackboard fish special, only to be told that is not available and the blackboard is only meant for lunch. (apology) The seafood and pasta special was dry but tasty, I ate every bite. I was very hungry since the raw oyster platter never arrived. (apology) The Dumbwaiter salad and soup was enjoyed, but the ordered bowl was a cup. (apology). The scallops were once again well prepared, but not presented as described on the menu. The Mobile benedict was tasty. With a 6:15 p.m. reservation we were getting anxious to make the 8:00 p.m. symphony performance, because the service was so slow. The couple sitting next to us was there when we arrived and our entrees arrived well before theirs and when quizzed, the waitress offered them an "apology". The Dumbwaiter is still new and working out the wrinkles. We didn't complain about our experience and tipped 20%. We want Dumbwaiter to be successful, but it will be a while before we circle back around and give them another chance. With the consistency of Noja, Kitchen on George and Noble South, fortunately, there are other good dining choices in midtown and downtown to select from.

Ate there a few days ago and was delighted winith our server ( Tara). She had a great understanding of the menu and made some very good suggestions of what to order. She was spot on, the food she suggested was perfect! The steak and mashed potatoes were delicious! The atmosphere was beautiful. The desserts were too good to miss! Over all a wonderful experience. We will definitely return. Please give our server mad props! She was delightful. The Chef rocked it out. This is a must not miss place to eat.

Great lunch spot in the heart of downtown Mobile. Service is friendly, food comes out fast and tasty. The menu is overall pretty heavy for my preference, but it's a good crowd pleasing menu - especially if you enjoy Southern cooking. Can't wait to try them for dinner.

Amazing dinner. The absolute best steaks I have ever eaten. The broiled oysters off the chain. Atmosphere incredible. I think it's the best restaurant in Mobile. Ruth's Chris could take a lesson in how to cook a steak from the Dumbwaiter. 5 stars!

We had a reservation and ate there last night. The decor was nice and the bathroom clean, but no toilet paper. Oh well, not the first time this has happened to me and probably not the last. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. We ordered the Mother's Day Special: filet, fried green tomato, small lobster tail with a crabmeat sauce. It was killer! Remarkably, our meal was served to us in record speed and the restaurant was crowded. We did not have any problem with the noise level even though the tables are close together. We throughly enjoyed our meal and plan to visit this restaurant again in the future.

This originally was posted to my old account...sorry for the duplication: WOW! You are always willing to give a new, LOCAL restaurant some leeway on their "Grand Opening" night. Dumbwaiter did not need that allowance. The service was FAR better than I expected for a new restaurant on a busy night. BUT THE FOOD..... was just incredible. It was all "familiar" - but with an unexpected flair!! I would go back JUST to get Duck Confit Wings and the Brussel Sprouts! Imagine the best chicken wings you've ever had........but done from the wings of "leftover" duck confit - fried to a crispy, crackly crunch. And their "special soup" for the night was something I can only describe as a cross between French Onion Soup and Vietnamese Pho!!! I hope they make it a regular. We also had their "imported oysters - raw" and local oysters baked - both were first class. There were four of us and we specifically ordered as much variety as we could. The sides of collard greens, grits.......I can't make a complaint about anything.....other than - they had too many things to choose from!!! And we never even THOUGHT about dessert. I can't wait to go back!!!!!

This is one of the best restaurants in Mobile. Although it has only been open a couple of weeks, the staff is prompt and knowledgable, the food was unique and delicious and the location is great for a night out.

Super trendy, yet not too spendy!! A simple Yelp review is hardly enough to express how amazing Dumbwaiter is... But I will certainly try! My husband and I decided to try this new restaurant for our date night. Our first impression was "Wow!". It's very well lit, but still feels intimate. The staff is super friendly. We were asked if we had a reservation, and when we cautiously said no...(we were nervous because it was quite busy for a Wednesday night!!) the greeter smiled and said "Oh that's not a problem!! Where would you like to sit tonight?" She went on to explain that a few folks DID have reservations that night and she didn't want to miss anyone's special requests. I loved this. It shows attention to detail, and that tells ME attention to detail is important here. I loved the atmosphere... Exposed brick, burlap wrapped strings of lights hanging from the ceiling, repurposed wood to make the tables, no loud music or staff yelling back at the kitchen... Very rustic, very Southern, very unique. Clean, quiet and laid back, charming. Even the glassware on the tables was special and different. Now, onto the important part, THE FOOD!! Let me start by saying this: if food quality is important to you, then this is your restaurant. I was able to order food that didn't contain MSG (a preservative that I'm allergic to), and while I didn't ask about the entire menu, our server was able to ask the chef directly if my food choice had MSG and she came back promptly and assured me it did not. Awesome. My husband ordered the Alabama Benedict, which was a southern style biscuit, a fried green tomato, a slice of super tender pork, a sunny side up egg, and all topped with a tomato sauce that was incredible. I had the goat cheese and scallion mashed potatoes (OH MY GOD, amazing, I'll never eat plain mashed potatoes again) and the fried shrimp with grits. Seriously yall... This food was simply incredible. I loved how the grits and mashed potatoes came served in a little cast iron bowl. And the portions were generous but not gluttonous. We also ordered dessert, a house made pound cake served with vanilla bean ice cream. The ice cream was super frozen (exactly how I love it) served in a tiny tin-like old fashioned milk jug (see, all the little unique touches!!) and the pound cake was simple and hot and delicious. It was a great ending to a wonderful meal. Our server was prompt but gave us a lot of time to decide on our order. And she kept my drink refilled, which is always important to me. Our food also came fairly quickly (under 30 minutes), especially considering it didn't look like any of it was pre-made. I cannot WAIT to go back to Dumbwaiter. My experience was exceptional, and I hope you enjoy your meal too!!
