Good traditional Mexican food. I really like the lunch buffet. The service is outstanding; they leave a pitcher of tea for on the table for you. You better not have a lot of work in the afternoon though...

So to start I have eaten at El Palacio my entire life so this review will probably be a bit partial. I have my favorites and don't often stray. I order the taco salad (and split it with my dining companion), the lunch buffet (beans, no rice, a chalupa and an enchilada -one of which I save for the to-go box), shredded beef burrito as entrees and usually cheese dip (yellow). The prices have gotten a little crazy lately. Lunch buffet is around $10 by the time you add tax and tip but it does come with a drink and it's easy to make two meals out of it. Salsa - something to note-it's different than most mexican places. There is a mild and hot salsa. When I say mild I mean tomato sauce and when I say hot, I mean pretty spicy. I like to mix them and pour some of each on my food. Rice and Beans - I don't like the rice but I'm generally not a fan of rice at mexican restaurants. I love the beans but there will be grease around the edge. It is an older restaurant with few updates in my lifetime but it is still one of my favorites.

Great food! The food came out piping hot! Waiter was excellent! Drinks were filled as needed. Table was cleared periodically to help keep it uncluttered. I really enjoyed the whole experience. The only thing I can minus a star for is when the hostess seated us. There was stuff on both bench seats and she just dusted it off with her hands and waited for us to sit down. I am picky about cleanliness. Everything else was clean. I like the atmosphere!

Expensive, terrible Mexican food! My wife and I (Texas natives and lovers of good Mexican food) ate here last night with the hopes of finding a good, quick Mexican food resturant before going to Lowe Mill. I had to say we had our doubts looking at the place from the outside but we thought we'd give it a try. First off, the place was so dark and shadowy inside that it took us awhile to orient ourselves. We were seated immediately and our waiter (nice guy) brought us "chips and dip", tasted like out of a bag and most of them were stale. The salsa tasted like tomato soup and the queso dip, which was tiny, cost us nearly 5 dollars extra. I ordered the chille reńo which was okay but not great, my wife ordered the chimichanga which was dry with no queso on it and reminded us of a convenience store burrito. The enchilada was blan and covered in way too much cheese, the "guacamole" was just a smashed up alvacodo, and like salt in the wound, we paid over $40 for the meal! It was by far one of the worst places I've been too for "Mexican food". My advice, keep driving.

Worst food I've ever had. Red flag - no Hispanics work here. Stale chips, bland salsa, food floating in cheese- maybe velveta. Scary. I was relieved to make it out alive and will never come back. Worst case scenario Alabama Mexican food. Think about this - established in 1966 - how was it for Hispanics in AL in 1966... Not good!

Um, I really can't understand the crowd? I feel a bit out of place. I tied this place really because it's been here since the 60s and I'm really sorry I did. First off, don't sit in the booth. They will eat you alive. Second off the food was AWFUL and extreme over priced. The beef in my taco was bone cold, and the shell was stale. The salsa was only thing I could stomach.

This is definitely my oldest favorite. I have literally been going to El Palacio since I was in the womb. My entire family loves it and we find ourselves going back again and again, making special trips whenever we are in Huntsville visiting. The chile relleno is the best I've ever had. They offer white and yellow cheese dip, both of which I love.Deluxe nachos are a must-try. My mom and I typically share a half-order (which comes with 8 nachos). I just wish they would renovate the bathrooms and get rid of that 20 year old rotating towel they expect me to dry my hands on... PLEASE???

My favorite Mexican restaurant! Been eating here since I was in my momma's tummy. And my parents have eaten here since they were kids. It's gotten kinda pricey but it's worth it!

This place was highly over-priced and not worth a first try. I got the "famous fajitas" which were not good at all. The chicken tasted like it was seasoned from a packet from the grocery store and just had mounds of onions piled on top with barely any other veggies. It came with barely any sour cream and no guacamole salad (which is a standard fajita staple). The queso dip was just melted cheese that hardened within 5 minutes of it being on the table for a high price of $5!!! Bottom line, I would have rather gone to Taco Bell.

This is the oldest Mexican restaurant in town, and is popular primarily with the old-time residents of Huntsville. While it doesn't suit everybody (it definitely feels old and hole-in-the-wall), it has the best refried beans in town. I also prefer their chile rellenos to everyone elses (green chile stuffed with meat and cheese - nice tanginess), including the more authentic hispanic-owned restaurants in town (must be the gringo in me). The food isn't always consistent, but I'm always satisfied when I leave. The price rating is based on the cafeteria-buffet lunch (two items, beans, rice, and drink).

Their buffet is not a buffet. How's that for a start? I was craving a Mexican buffet and wanted to try someplace I hadn't been. Their sign reads Lunch Buffet, since 1966, and it's always crowded, so I chose El Palacio. I walked in and couldn't see anything; it's dark and dreary inside. Walking in from the bright outdoors, it'll take your eyes a couple minutes to adjust to the point that you can see. The hostess was leaning against the counter and asked if I wanted a menu or buffet; when I answered buffet, she said, "Then go over there", and "pointed" with her head. Too much effort on her part, I guess. I walked slowly to the right, as my eyes were still adjusting to the darkness. I walked into a dining area, then realized I passed the entrance to the buffet. It was very small, and the serving spoons were pointed inward toward the 2 men standing behind the food. Argh, I'm not a fan of having to say, "I'd like this, I'd like that, just a taste of this...." Much rather serve myself. I tell the guys it's my first time there, hoping that would make it evident that I wasn't sure what to do/where to go. Nothing. I took a cafeteria-style tray and one guy filled up half a plate with rice and beans. I really only wanted a taste of each, but didn't get a chance to tell him. I said I'd like a chili relleno; he put one on the plate. I saw a cheese enchilada and a taco that I wanted, too, but after I selected the enchilada, which was small, I was told that's all I get. Their "buffet" is 2 items, plus rice and beans. And you can't go back for more. I carried my tray past the fountain drink area to the cashier. Suddenly a man jumped in front of me, picked up my tray, and walked off. What?? I hoped he worked there, but still... why on earth?? Cashier rang me up. $8.49 for THAT?!?! Good grief! I was kicking myself for not going to El Herradura for a real buffet for less money! I gave cashier a $20 and she LICKED HER FINGERS to pick up the bills from her drawer and hand them to me. Nice, lady. That makes me want to eat. I walk into the dining area and have to search for the table with my food on it. Took me a while. I sat down and looked at the food, then scanned the table for hot sauce. Nothing. It looked dry, and the tiny container of salsa I got from the "buffet" wasn't going to save it. As for the salsa, they call it "dip" (ha!)... and I swear it's Pace out of a jar. And the mega mound of mandatory rice? Out of a box. The beans were tasteless and pasty. The chili relleno was not in any way authentic, but I did enjoy it. The side of chips (with the salsa) tasted like out of a bag. While I most certainly won't be back, they are doing something right, because the place was packed (many elderly people), and the fact that they can sell poor quality "Mexican" food at $8.49 proves that. If you like tasteless, bland so-called Mexican cuisine out of a jar and box, go to your local grocery store, aisle 4... or this restaurant.

This place simply stinks. The food is just rude, oily, overcooked, buffet-style hyper-americanized pseudo-Mex. The (in)famous "stalactite ceiling" is made of foam covered with oily filth. I just simply cannot figure out how in the world this place would get a 4- or 5-star rating from anyone, ever. Here's a hint: you won't be seeing any Hispanic people eating in this place; I didn't even see any working there. I wish I could give it zero stars. I wouldn't even recommend this place to an enemy. If you decide to go anyway, bring along some Mylanta - you'll be needing it soon.

order off the menu, don't be cheap and go for the buffet because it's not as great. I love the Acapulco platter when I don't want any meat, but I also love the quesadillas here. The pico de gallo they serve with them is fresh with just the right amount of cilantro. There are so many fake "mexican" restaurants in Huntsville where beans and sauces taste as if they were once canned....I've even had red sauce at a place and could have sworn it was spaghetti sauce...but El Palacio is about the closest I can find to the wonderful authentic restaurants I haunted in Texas.

I have been going to El Palacio for over 30 years. I love the buffet! The menu items are a little expensive, but who needs a menu when you can walk through the buffet and get a tasty lunch? I love the Chalupa with lettuce and their wonderful quacamole!

El Palacio took my Mexican Food virginity (at least I waited until high school!). Yes, it was my first and I will always have fond memories of our time together even though I'm a Texan now. On a trip to Huntsville in December, Sugar Bear and I went to El Palacio for lunch. Sugar Bear was born and raised in Texas. He was appalled that we were actually going to a Mexican restaurant in Alabama. As he entered the place, he noted that there were no actual Mexicans working there and he wanted to leave. I pushed him through the cafeteria style line with the promise that it was much higher quality than Pancho's. We dined on enchiladas, chalupas, and chile rellenos. While it is not as great as our local favorites, I still found it to be quite good. The hot sauce is wonderful and they have the BEST refried beans on the planet! Sugar Bear was pleased and completely cleaned his plate. There is a lunch buffet (not all you can eat though) that offers 2 items with beans, rice, chips and salsa. You can dine on the other side of restaurant for the full menu, but the buffet is such an awesome lunch deal! It is the same enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, and chile rellenos on both sides so why spend more for a prettier presentation? Sugar Bear, who affectionately refers to El Palacio as El Felatio, has heard me talk about the 'whipped cream' ceiling of this place for years. He FINALLY knows what I'm talking about. Go there and look up. It is SO cool and I've never seen anything else like it elsewhere. Added Bonus: El Palacio is also very close the 1st Baptist Church, home of the 'Egg Beater Jesus Floating Through Outer Space' mosaic. It is a '70's mural on the front of the church that literally looks like the title in the previous sentence. It is worth the drive a few blocks north on University to check it out. Sugar Bear says his life is complete now that he has viewed its magnificence. (There is a snapshot of the mural in my picture collection on Yelp. It is not as amazing as seeing it in real life though.)

It pains me to do this, but it must be said. Bad experiences lately. This was my favorite place to eat in Hsv. growing up. Now, it is a shadow of its once glorious self. The place is in disrepair, the food is bland, nobody goes there anymore. I must say, the frijoles barrachos soup and deluxe nachos are still top notch, but not enough to overcome the bland steak soft tacos, stale chips, overpriced items, and unapologetic servers. Its been open since the 60's. Lets all hope it changes management or the current management starts caring again.

It was an unusual time in my life. I was going through an ALL YOU CAN EAT MEXICAN FOOD phase, and the sign promising an all-you-can-eat plethora of cheesy enchiladas, quesadillas, and tacos was too appealing for me to resist. ... LIES! LIES! IT WAS NOTHING BUT LIES! There was no all-you-can-eat. There was no Mexican. Instead what I got was cafeteria style "Mexican" food -- no, "food" -- at restaurant prices. What a sham.

Best Chili Rellenos and refried beans in Huntsville. I love their cheese enchiladas. They use better tasting cheese than all the other Mexican restaurants, in my opinion. This place is a Huntsville landmark,

If you're looking for some Mexican food that is a little different from most Mexican restaurants, then this is the place to go. I've probably been eating here for 10 years or so and the food is still as good as it always was. The cheese enchiladas are my favorite thing on the menu. The guacamole is not good, though. Also, the bathrooms could use a makeover. The rotating towel to dry your hands on is a little off-putting.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
